Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Greetings people of the AFC South. I am pleased you have chosen to visit with me. Let's try to keep this clean. And humorous. Go....

Aaron Rodgers (Dallas, TX)

Hey Paul. I don't normally come around your chat but I was talking with Springsteen (apparently he is a big Packers fan) and he wants to know when we can hook up for some karaoke.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

I'm confused because he's a Jersey guy often seen in a Dolphins hat. If only I could have some time with him to spell out rooting rules and make some requests.

kevin (jacksonville, fl)

Do you have any opinion or analysis to offer as of yet on the crop of college QB's coming out in the draft this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

I don't love the top four as draft picks in range of the Titans and Jaguars.

Drew (Richmond VA)

Don't know too much about David Walker does he stand a chance to make a significant improvement over Huey or are the issues with the running game still due to the lack of production and injuries to the offensive line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

I'm working on learning more. I've said it's more the line than the backs, and he won't be coaching the line.

Keenan (Muncie, IN)

Loved the groundhog reference. You remind me of Bill Murray in the movie!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Ned? Ned Ryerson?

Elizabeth (goofing off at work)

Jeff Fisher, Vince Young, Randy Moss and Chris Johnson are marooned on a desert island. Fisher has a light bulb, VY has a pack of gum, Randy Moss has a cell phone and Chris Johnson still has a job. How many years will it be before the Titans are actual contenders again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Better question is who will Moss allow to join him on the copter out? I suspect all four.

Tom (NJ)

If Jake Locker or Ryan Mallett are still available when Jaguars are on the clock at the draft, do you see them taking either one of them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Too early to say. I don't think Mallett's going to fit the character type Gene Smith wants. So then it may be about whether they think Locker's accuracy issues can be fixed.

Cold (In Louisiana)

We understand your professionalism, but do you ever laugh?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

All the time. You ever hear me on the radio?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you Like to win Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington,Texas?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Packers.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

Even backups on the Steelers and Packers get at least one article written about them leading up to the Super Bowl. If you had to pick a lesser-known player that will be a household name after the Super Bowl, who would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Do people know B.J. Raji? Whose nickname poll should have been a landslide for "Garagi" but was not. Who's voting in these things. "The Freezer?" Really?

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

If you had to build a franchise around Aaron Rodgers or Ben Roethlisberger who would you pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Very tough, but Rodgers.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

If you had to build a franchise around Aaron Rodgers or Chris Johnson who would you pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Not very tough, Rodgers. Always the quarterback., Arian Foster led the league in rushing and was undrafted. Who's led the league in passing as an undrafted?

C.J. (San Diego)

Can Colts become a dominant defense next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

How about above average? An above average defense with that quarterback would make for a very good team. I don't know that it'll ever be a dominant defense while paying Manning and his weapons.

TNB (WV)

Who do you think the Texans might target in free agency once their is a new CBA. Do you think they can strenghthen their D enough to make a playoff run next season? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

I think they have to chase Nnamdi or Champ. And I'd like to see them pursue Eric Weddle too.

Drew (Richmond VA)

Is Ryan Diem a must drop this off season or is it worth it to keep paying him for steadily declining performance?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

It may well be time.

Heath (Oboro, KY)

What does it say about loyalty to Fisher or Titans that most assistants are staying and will gladly take Fish's job after he was "fired"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I don't buy that he was fired. He walked away with $4 million. He took care of them all with one-year deals. And I'm sure he told Munch and Dinger to go get it.

Chuck (San Antonio, TX)

Haven't heard much about it but what's the chances of the Titans going after say a Brady Quinn or Matt Leinart to plug in at QB? Who else might be available that you would target?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

At best, guys like that could hope for a shot to compete. They can sign Leinart or trade for Quin (not sure of his contract status) to be their unchallenged No. 1. They are both terrible.

Titan Man (TN)

At the end of the season I wished for the Titans to fire everyone and start over!!! Looks like I got my wish, Do you honestly think we are any worse off... It doesn't matter if your 11-5 or 0-16, if you don't win the Superbowl, you might as well be first in the draft!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

You got your wish except for the part where 14 assistants are under contract and the favorite for the job has been with the team for 29 years. Good job by you.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Did you like what you saw from Jared Cook at the end of the season or was it all smoke and mirrors?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

It was better, but let's not make it like he was Shannon Sharpe.

Finley (Via Mobile)

Simon and I want to know if we can have a super bowl party for our friends since we are stuck at home this year for the big game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Didn't you get the evite? Uh-oh., I smell a trip to doggie day-care.

Alex (Jacksonville)

Do you think it's 100% Garrard is back in Jacksonville next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Probably, though he could ensure it by taking a pay reduction.

Clint (Bloomington, IN)

I know the Colts rarely, if ever, go after free agents, but what are the chances they make a run at Logan Mankins? I know it's probably small, but if they went after a FA isn't this the one to go after?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I expect he gets tagged or re-signed. Yeah., he'd be a great addition.

Joe (Charlotte, NC)

How do writers' get their sources? I wanna be a writer one day, but don't know how to get sources.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Well, you have to have a job with an outlet that asks you to deal with a team, for starters. Random people don't generally get to talk about information with the people who have it.

Nate (Nashville, TN)

So talks have started - How soon can we expect to see a contract in place for Peyton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

We can expect to see a franchise tag on Feb. 10.

Aaron (Nashville)

Who is the wildcard in the Titans head coach search?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

There isn't one who's surfaced. I think they should look at someone like Rich Bisaccia, who I wrote about yesterday: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/21082/why-the-titans-should-look-at-rich-bisaccia

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Explain how Munchak is qualified to coach the Titans. He's not even been brought up in the conversation for the other coaching vacancies.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Is that the primary qualification for being a good head coach, popularity with the other 31 teams? I don't think 31 teams wanted Andy Reid, who'd never coordinated. Mike Tomlin was from out of nowhere. I don't know if he'll be good or not, but he knows how to lead and he's been very good at his job. The Titans don't need to follow your pack mentality in their hiring.

Peyton Manning (Indy)

Howard Mudd will be coaching in Philly and my old "liquored up" kicker is a pizza guy? PK, I feel left in the dark here. What should I do?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Call them both to catch up. Then call me and spill all about those chats.

Ross (TN)

Is Munchak still the odds-on favorite to be head coach? I was certain they would just interview the internal candidates and a Rooney Rule guy, so are these outside interviews legit or just being conducted for public appearances and the ability to say, "We looked around."?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

It's great that with all your inside information you were certain. I'm baffled by this idea that they would waste their time and the time of a guy like Mularkey or Williams (out of it now) just for appearances.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

5 yard penalty for misspelling Moss. Replay chat answer.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

That might have magically been fixed on the replayed down.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Zach (Nashville): Do you think that Perry Fewell could become our new DC if we went another direction at HC?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

No. He's under contract as a DC and not available.

Kenny Britt (New York)

Am I off getting fat and into trouble again? Or am I actually trying to realize my potential this offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

You've been gone what, a month? And I'm supposed to have tabs on you?

Jason (Murfreesboro)

If you had to put money on it, who is the Titans QB next year. If yuo worked in the front office who would be your top guys to go after?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I don't know who it will be. I've written my top two choices would be Palmer and Orton.

Kevin (Jacksonville)

Who's your favorite NFL player of all time? Who do you think is the best NFL player of all time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Favorites: Phil Simms, Greg Pruitt, Brian Sipe. Beat: Brown or Payton.

Drew (Richmond VA )

You said this week that Bob Sanders' banner should come down at Lucas Oil... who is deserving enough to take that banner from the only DPOY the Colts ever produced??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

If he's retired and gone, honoring the past is nice. If he's playing 3% of the season, I think it kind of demeans the rest of the roster. Bethea is more deserving right now for sure.

Zach (Atlanta)

Enojoyed your article on going a new direction with the Titan's head coaching job. It seems you are with most fans in thinking we need some new blood to shake things up. Do you think management feels that way or is aware of that overriding sentiment? Certainly doesnt seem that way since they want to promote an o-line coach from within.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Management doesn't care what the fan base sentiment is, nor should it. That's not the way to run a team. Remember when the Yankees hired Joe Torre? What did fans think of that? We hated it. And he was fantastic. It's their jobs to find the right guy. If they don't they likely get fired. It's not their jobs to listen to fans and media. And if it's Munchak, trust me, he will change plenty of stuff.

Tyler (Murfreesboro, TN)

You think Jeff Fisher still wants to coach somewhere in 2012 or beyond? Or do you see him following the Cowher/Gruden path and going to TV?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

TV this year, an NFL job in 2012 or 2013.

Joe (Indiana)

Do you think the Colts will become the first team to host their own Super bowl, given how many guys will be returning and how their backups showed promising potential?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Odds and history say no.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Paul are you aware of something I could put in the water down here in Jacksonville so we can control the masses who want the Jaguars to take a QB in round one? I think Gene was pretty clear, in stating the obvious, that defense is the problem.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Doesn't change the need for a QB.

Adam (Cookeville, TN)

Raji = "The Freezer." Ever since "The Fridge," big guys have to be named after appliances. I'm still bitter that The Fridge has a Super Bowl touchdown and Sweentess doesn't.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Being named after a Garage would be better. Also, Garages are BIGGER than appliances.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

With Fish and Chuck Cecil gone, Titans D wil lose their chippiness and edge. True?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

The chippiness and edge that failed to stop anyone on third down and let tight ends run wild?

Gershon (Baltimore)

how do u think Andy Dalton would turn out as a pro and more specifically a Titan?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Predict he won't be there for Titans in second if they don't move up.

Felix (NJ )

hey PK, any chance the titans land Perry Fewell since he's due for an interview? i really hope my guys dont hire in office.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Yes. If he's interviewing, of course there is a chance they land him.

Jason (Bmore)

Did I read correctly that the former Indy Oline coached just joined the Eagles? Isn't there some story to this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

There is. He retired. Then Andy Reid called him and said would you like to come out of retirement? We just hired your good pal as our defensive line coach. And he said yes. Good story..

shanard ((slc,ut))

PK, lets say texans sign Nnamdi, and go after huff for the secondary, and draft another pass rusher for their 3-4 how can u see this team shape up in one year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Much better. But those are two big signings.

Kevin (Jacksonville)

Beatles or Stones? Yes or Rush? Springsteen or Mellencamp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Springsteen above all. Big on Stones too. Reading Keith's book. Do you know he thinks he's survived drugs because he always had premo stuff?

Guest (Cyberspace)

Why did Gregg Wiliams decline to interview with the Titans? Is it really because of his friendship with Fisher and did not want to follow him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

I think it's out of friendship with Munchak and because of the nepotism deal and his determination to continue to work with his son.If Fisher's cool with Munchak or Dinger taking it, why not Williams?

shanard ((slc,ut))

PK, does moss stay with the titans or gets released and who do you think takes a chance with him, that could use him (chiefs or ravens).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

He doesn't have to get released. He's not under contract. And there is no way he is re-signed.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

I'm going to start flagging for FA questions soon, Paul. Until there is a new CBA, we won't have free agency, which means, "Will the (insert team) go after (insert player)?" questions are meaningless. I've got my hand on the flag people...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Thanks Edward.

john (princeton, nj) [via mobile]

What is the colts biggest neede in the draft? Do they finally get another big-time RB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

It's not running back. It's a premier offensive lineman.

Jason (San Francisco)

I liked the article you posted yesterday on facebook. it allowed us all to see that you mix commentary and journalism... Now we dont have to bust your b***s for lack of objectivity. You have clarified that you dont aspire to that.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Thanks. For those who don't know what he's talking about, please take a moment to read: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/21028/what-i-do-here

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Assuming Munchak is the man, would you care to throw out any names for D. Coordinator, besides McGinnis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Same ones Fisher had. Mangini. Mora. He can't get anyone who's under contract in the league. So it's an out of work guy, or a college guy.

Zach (Atlanta)

What do you think about Von Miller to Titans? Any top defense needs a gnarly linebacker, no?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Like it as of now.

Yurgi (Romania)

MJD's PR guy is giving him awful advice.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Just disappear. STOP TALKING for a minute.

AFC South Blogger Admirer (Shut-in)

So I read that your buddy Timmy G was catching heat from readers for his assessment of a Dolphin linebacker in relation to DPOY. Do you and he ever share the grief you receive with one another and maybe even help in conjuring an appropriate reply to the buffoons? Oh ... almost forgot .... that'll do it ....

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

We don't need each other's help, but when I see him responding on Twitter I do sometime sigh in relief: "It's not just me!" Wake was not DPOY.

Midge (Indy)

Any word on how Austin Collie is doing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I expect no work on how injured Colts are doing for a long time.

Mike (Iowa City)

you gotta be getting sick of my ricki stanzi question...can u just answer it so i stop bugging you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

If I don't answer it, do you think it's possible I don't currently have an opinion on him t? Could that be it?

Joe (Jacksonville, FL)

In your opinion, all things being equal including compensation/draft picks, etc., do you think Kevin Kolb is an upgrade over David Garrard?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Absolutely he would be.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Has Munch turned down O.C. jobs over the last couple of years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

He's been under contract. The Titans haven't been obligated to grant teams permission to talk to him for such jobs. As far as I know, they've not been asked.

titan fan (tn)

i enjoy reading the blog everyday, but as we go into the off season the news slows down and i find myself bored with espn because i'm tired of the same green bay and steelers stories. more titans news please? thanks for your work

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I can't make the news, Chief. If you think it's slow for you when your team has no head coach, try following all the Texans and Jaguars activity right now.

Ben ( 75 Degrees in Sunny California)

Wow Paul, I was just going to ask about Rich Bisaccia, LOVED the article you wrote yesterday about him. Have you heard any update that they will in fact look at him, or is it too soon to ask?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I would be stunned if they looked at him.

Marv Levy (Buffalo)

Why hasn't Tennessee called yet? They have all of the other Buffalo coaches.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I like it. Everyone goes young, so Titans could go... opposite.

Bill Cowher (Not sure)

Whats the chance that I will ever coach college football?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I think zero. Why would a guy who could have NFL jobs prefer college? Less money, and you have to go to all kind of crappy little towns and beg kids to come play for you.

Cold Beer (Here)

What's your poison for the big game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Labatts.

AJ (Ohio )

Two headed question.. Best case scenerio for the Browns next year? And how do you see Michael vick performing next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Browns: 9-7. I think Vick will be a popular preseason MVP choice and reasonably so. I love the Eagles in 2012.

Drew (Richmond VA )

How good of a job did Clyde Christianson do this year? Was it mostly Peyton making the calls? On TV at least it seemed like Clyde couldn't get the call in a lot of times and Peyton just went his own way.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I'm pretty sure that from watching TV you cannot hear what is going into Manning's ear.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Munchak is good at his job? Yeah the O Line was superb last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Judge him on one year or body of work? How about the year before?

Midge (Indy)

What happened in the Pro Bowl.......Peyton worked maybe 2 series?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Who possibly cares, and why?

shanard ((slc,ut))

PK, titans should trade young to denver for orton and give them a 5thrd pick.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Orton's shown he can play in the league. Young hasn't. So that's perfectly fair.

Charles (Nashville)

Why is everyone on such a "draft a qb in the 2nd round" kick for the Jaguars, Titans and every other qb needy team? In the past 10 years, 11 have been drafted, and one has been great (Brees) and one might be good (Kolb). The others are bad.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Every year is different. And people are wary of the four "first-rounders" and like the second batch.

Kevin (Knoxville)

I enjoyed your earlier post about what you do as a blogger. I agree that you provide reasoned and succinct analysis of AFC South/NFL issues. Now that we are in AFC South offseason, here is one of my biases. I wish that the rules committee would decide that any player tossing an imaginary flag on the field should be penalilzed for unsportsmanlike conduct. This behavior happens way to much and is boring, annoying, and unsportsmanlike. Think of what would happen in baseball or basketball if that happened. Do you have any thoughts about the issue? (I know Hochuli will throw a flag for too long of a question, so I'll apologize in advance.)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

It's a real non-starter for me. I think you could probably use a hobby. But I am glad you liked that post and that you came to the chat.

Boyd (Nashville) [via mobile]

Paul, just thought i'd let you know that I am full on stealing your quote about being biased against dumb.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

You can attribute it if you'd like to be polite.

Nate (Ohio)

Who do you think will be the most surprising team in the NFL next year?(If there is a season next year)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Detroit. A playoff team if it has a good draft and a healthy quarterback.

Tyler (Murfreesboro, TN)

I'm curious - what do you do all day for work? I don't imagine you sit at the computer for eight hours reading articles and emailing sources - so tell us what a day for an ESPN blogger is like.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Depends on the day. But there is a lot of time in front of the computer reading and a lot of time on the phone Three mornings a week I go to the radio station in Nashville for The Wake Up Zone. In season I am at the Titans' facility a lot. .

Mike (Ohio)

The tag in Peyton's case really doesn't mean anything though, right? They could still sign him to an extension that renders the tag amount moot, correct?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

That's my understanding. And while it would seem it would hold over, I don't believe there is a guarantee the tag means anything once the agreement expires, though I presume a new CBA would address it/ pick it up.

Jack Pardee (Rocking Chair)

Should anyone give a rip whether Earl Campbell wants to be involved with the franchise again?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Nope.

Julian Assange (England)

All information in the world should be public. You should not need to be in a certain profession to be able to have access to information!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

And someone earlier asked if I laugh!

Fred (Houston)

Will there ever be a chat where 50 percent of the questions aren't Titans related? Bro!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

This is a great week to complain about it, because the Colts, Texans and Jaguars have so much going on and the Titans are all settled! Also, I can't control the questions, Chief. Good job by you not asking a non-Titans one.

Tim Graham (AFC East)

You know how sometimes big guys are nicknamed "Tiny"? Well, I think that should be your nickname

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

No, I'm Curly.

Roger (Chicago)

Someone was saying (I apologize I don't remember who) that Bud may be looking to get a first round pick, potentially more, for a trade with VY. This sounds to me like a smoke and mirror move and VY will once again be the starting QB next year. Can you provide credible insight into this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Young won't be back and the Titans won't get anything for him. If they do, it would be like a seventh, or a conditional sixth.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Lack of leadership was a major issue, despite Fisher denails.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Where is my last question guy?

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

You ever have a player or coach get chippy with you during an interview?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Sure, where have you been? Randy Moss the first time he talked in Nashville wasn't excited with me, unfortunately.

Marc (Charlotte)

Labatts? Are you Canadian, eh?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Like their beer. And their big cities.

Mike (Ohio)

Does Fisher remain on the competition committee since he still under contract or is it only for active league personnel?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

I believe he will have to, and would want to, give it up.

Edu (Nashville)

Hey I sense that u will hire Munchak, but u also said that titans need an outsider, so?????

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

I don't think he's the best choice. But I'm not prejudging that he will be Fisher version 2.0.

Thomas (Chatland)

Alright chatters, that's all the questions Mr. Kuharsky can field today. He has to head to the Titans' facility to officially interview for HC. Make sure to read his blogs, listen to him on the radio, follow him on twitter and the like. God bless, travel safe!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Thomas is hired! Thanks all.
