Super Bowl-winning QB Len Dawson will be here in a few minutes to take your questions!
Hang on folks. We're getting Len. Busy week for everyone with the Super Bowl.
We've got Len!
How clear are the memories that you still have of your Super Bowl win?
I am getting older yes. But some things never go away. It's very vivid in my mind because that is the ultimate game that I ever played. We played in Super Bowl I too, and I remember the interception from that game too.
Where do you keep your Super Bowl ring?
Very seldom do I wear it. It's in a very safe spot. But then again, at Super Bowl time, I might get it out.
How cool is it to see the re-emergence of the Chiefs team this year?
Oh, it was great. I've been broadcasting the Chiefs radio network for 27 years. I've seen some good times and not so good times. They've won 10 games over three seasons and this year they won 10 games in one season. It makes things much merrier here.
Hello Len, I'm a die-hard Chiefs fan, and i just want to personally thank you for bringing a Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City for the Sea of Red. I'm liking the direction our team seems to be headed, and I'm hoping we will bring a 2nd Lombardi back soon. Where do you see the Chiefs headed in the next few years to come?
Well if they make the same improvements they made the last year in the next few years, they will be much more improved. They've gotten some good talent there. It's on the upswing. I'm very encouraged by it.
Len, Who do you think is going to win the super bowl?
I don't know. This should be a heckuva game. My allegiance is to Pittsburgh, because I was drafted by them and spent three years there. They're from the AFC. But I like Green Bay too. They have the QBs to get it done and there are two great defenses. Should be a great game.
Hey Len, you battled through a knee injury, how do you feel about the Jay Cutler situation whether he could have played with the injury or not?
I'm not a doctor, so I have no idea. I know he's a tough guy. He's taken a lot of hits over the years. I'm sure he wanted to play. I would never question someone's courage that plays pro football. They're all tough people.
I remember rooting for the Chiefs when they defeated the Vikings in Super Bowl 4. If they had played the Super Bowl from 1960 through 1965 seasons I think the AFL would've won 2 games, how competative was the AFL back then in the 1960's?
It was very competitive. There were four games played before the merger. The AFL won two and the NFL won two. Super Bowl III with the Jets, that was one great game. Super Bowl IV, we had a better team than the Vikings. When you looked to see the domination, particularly of the defense, we were a better team.
KC, Oakland and the Jets were the three best teams that year.
Great to see you, Len Longtime fan. When you reflect on the Chiefs' Super Bowl run, which performance by your defense most impressed you, against the Jets, Raiders or Vikings? And man for man how would you compare that defense to the Steel Curtain defense, particularly the one that won its first two Super Bowls?
Yes! Yes to all three. The Jets game, Namath throw a pass in the endzone where there was a pass interference called. So they got the ball on the one and our defense stopped them. Against the Raiders, they had beaten us twice during the season. I don't know how many turnovers we had against them, but it was a lot. Our turnover differential was phenomenal.
When you look at that team, there are two LBs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Just for the record, and I wasn't alive then, but I think you were the best of the AFL quarterbacks.
Some of my favorite AFL players were on my team. I lasted 19 years in pro football and 14 of them as a starter. So those guys took good care of me. People were saying that the AFL wasn't that good, but when I got into the league, I was astounded by how many good players that were there. It finally took us a few years, but we figured out that it was good play and we were being fed some propaganda. There were a lot of good players in that league.
Did you call your own plays and formations in Super Bowl IV?
It was nothing like today. There was no device in my helmet listening to someone calling my plays. We had a game plan and went over what would work. The coach would send in plays and said you didn't have to call it, but if you didn't and your play didn't work, you would hear about it. When I went to the sideline, Coach would ask me if I was working up to something with what I was doing and we would talk about what we were seeing out there.
I would ask my OL about the blocking and see what was working best. I would talk to my WRs and see what they were thinking. I have a picture that I like of one of our guys drawing a diagram in the dirt, saying that he could beat his guy. He was right, we got the big play and went on to score a TD.
So Len, something I've always wondered. Where specifically is the Lombardi Trophy won in Super Bowl IV at? I have not had the oppurtunity to go to Arrowhead yet.
Yes, it's at Arrowhead. All of us got small replicas of the trophy that we have in our possession. You should go to Arrowhead, they remodled it and they have all of the memorabelia there. People don't have to wait until football season to go and see it.
I hope that the Chiefs continue to improve. One day soon I hope to see them play in the Super Bowl again some time.
