Greetings, everyone. Today's chat coming to you from an igloo on Long Island. It's groundhg's Day, which means everything is the same with Pettitte. if he starting to get on your nerves? Mine too. as always, we will get underway at high noon
Is there any truth to the rumor that Lonn Trost is trying to convince the Steinbrenners to sell PSLs for every seat at every game at Yankee Stadium?
hello Michael and thanks for the laugh to start the day. I think he'll wait to see if it works for Wilpon and the Mets first
Should the Yanks get another infielder to fill in the Juan Miranda role or use someone they already have?
Hi Nancy. Miranda's role was more as a DH than a fill-in 1B, so i'm not sure they will look to do that. At least last year they had Berkman also as a fill in 1B, if you could call it that, but the Yankees seem to operate under the impression that Teixeira is an iron man who rarely needs a day off. Could be a dangerous policy
If Pettitte retires is there any pitchers left for the Yankees?
Hey, Nick. First of all, I consider Pettitte retired until further notice. And of course there are pitchers. How good they are is another matter. I'm not sure I believe Cashman is 100 pct. committed to culling a rotation out of the gus he's already got, and I expect that if between Nova, Garcia, Colon, Betances, Brackman, Manuelos, etc. etc., he doesn;t get what he wants he might try to package some of the so-called untouchables (i.e. Joba, Montero) to pick up an MLB proven starter by the trade deadline. But yeah, it would make everything a whole lot easier if Pettitte would just come back for one more year
Who makes the rotation colon or garcia or do we go after millwood
that's like asking, how do you want to die, by gun or knife? Neither option is very appetizing and adding Millwood, which I believe could happen, just throws another mediocre arm into the mix. All I know is somebody is going to have to emerge or else, the GM is going to have to go shopping, and bring plenty of cash and prospects
Which Pitcher will make the Yankees 25 Man Roster: Bartolo Colon or Mark Prior?
Hey Chris. I would say Colon has a much better chance since Prior hasn;t pitched in MLB since 2006 and from what I hear, was only throwing about 87 at the end of last season
with the rays signing damon and manny,do you see the yankees countering these moves by bringing back sheffield?would bring righty power and arod has some of his best years with sheff protecting him in the lineup!!
Joe, with all due respect my friend, you ask me this every week and every week my answer is the same. No. Too old, will want too much dough, didn;t play at all last year. forget it
Out of Colon, Garcia, and Prior who has the most realistic shot at cracking the rotation? I would say Garcia since he was healthy and decent last year.
James, I would agree with that assessment. Betw Colon and Prior, I would say Colon; betw colon and Garcia, probably freddy. but let's see what they've got in spring training
Do you think that Pettitte makes his decision anytime before spring training? And at this point what will that decision be?
Frank, the Yankees, or Cashman at least, think Pettitte has already made his decision, and that it to retire. If you;re asking will he change his decision between now and Feb. 14, only Andy knows for sure
With the acquisition of Freddy Garcia, does it reveal that Brian Cashman & Company has actually constructed an elaborate time machine that will teleport his roster back to 2005?
How did you find out? My advice, however, woud be to transport it back to 1998. Better team
Hey Wally, Do Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia really have a shot at grabbing a rotation spot? Also it really looks like Pettite is done, he is due to be at a Steiner autograph event in NY the day after spring training starts. Why he is taking so long to make an announcement?
Hey, Ciaran. One, not both. Let's put it this way: if both make the starting rotation, then the pitching is in worse shape than we thought. As for any Pettitte questions, please refer to my previous answers. I know nothing more this week than I did last week, or back in october when he first said he was thinking of quitting. And the "re-sked" steiner date is, I;m told, an attempt to save face by the memorabilia dealer, who never really had anything set up with Pettitte in the first place
So everyone is going on about how they don't think the Yankees rotation isn't the prettiest thing ever but what do you think about the offence picking up the pitching and Yankees actually winning the division? I mean i actually think the rotation can be really good without Mitre.
Hey, Christian. As I fmously, and unpopularly wrote a wouple of weeks ago, I wouldnt count the Yankees out of the division at all. The offense was great last year and should be nearly as good, if not better if Andruw Jones has anything left,. and the bullpen should be much better. The keys, however, are named AJ, Ivan and whoever Mr. No 5 starter turns out to be. If Pettitte comes back, I think they;re right in the thick of it
Hey Wally, unlike many critics, I understand why the Yankees have signed these veteran pitchers. And I love competition for that 5th starting spot in Spring Training (just look what it did for Hughes last year: 18 wins) BUT didn't this Yankees team lose to 9 straight lefty starters at some point last year? This concerns me, Arod's #'s against lefties were terrible. Wouldn't having Jesus Montero or another righty bat in the lineup somewhere help this. (And don't tell me Andruw Jones is the answer) thanks!
Hey, Sam, all good points, let;s remember the No. 5 starter is hardly the most important guy on th estaff. it's the no. 3 and 4 you have to worry about (and maybe the No. 2, assuming it's Hughes). Yanks had terrible time vs. lefty starters last year and I think you have to consider the possibility we've seen the best of A-Rod. Montero will get his shot to prove he can help. and don;t be so quck to wqrite of Jones. anyone with that much talent who is still only 33 could be an impact player
What's your take on all of the rumors about me? Should/Will I be back in 2012?
I'll tell you privately if you return my call today
What do you believe the rotation will be on March 31st?
CC Sabathia starting. after that, pray for four days of rain
do u see the yankees trading for chris carpenter? what other front-line starter could they go after? during spring training?
Hey, Raul. It's possible, but at this point anyoe the Yankees try to treade for is going to cost them dearly. Every team in baseball is going to squeeze their you-know-whats and I don;t know how many pitchers who are available now are worth what their clubs wll ask for them
What is the status of Damaso Marte, especially since the Yankees have 2 lefties without him?
hey, Larry. Not expected to pitch in 2011 after shoulder surgery
With the signings of Prior, Colon, and Garcia, did the Yankees see one of them becoming the 5th starter? If so, which one do you see gaining that spot, and what would happen with the other 2
Hi amanda. I think that is the hope for either Colon or Garcia; if Prior makes the team, a longshot at best, it will be as a reliever. But obviously the Yankees do not see Mtre as the solution and are willing to try just about anyone to avoid that prospect
Wally, do you think Cliff Lee spurned the Yankees because of the clubhouse? It?s pretty well known that they aren?t a fun group (though they have loosened up), and Lee would have been stuck with A-Rod for a teammate for the length of his deal, which couldn?t have been appealing to him.
Hey, Steve. How are things in snowy Hell? I'll try to answer all of ques at once. Cliff Lee did not spurn the Yankees bec, of clubhouse issues. His best friend, Sabathia, is there. This was about comfort iin his home city. he loved Philly, apparently not thrilled with NYC. Rothschild seems optinmistic abut AJ but what he's basing that on other than the fact that as the pitchign coach he has no choice, I have no real idea. As for AJ's tatoos, I think full-body skin replacement surgery would probably cost him the season, which for a lot of Yankee fans, would be OK
Wally, what is Cameron Diaz thinking? If A-Rod is really about to propose, she better run!! That guy is a loser!
she's thinking this: $27.5M a yar and half of it will be MINE!
Why don't the yankees sign Sheffield? He'd be great! I don't really think that. I just wanted to get it out of the way before the same person that asks this question every week does. Adding Sheff would be awful. Now we can move on to questions about the yankees that actually make sense.
Thank you, Rob. appreciate the help. (He already beat you to it)
Any chance the yanks sign sandy koufax or nolan ryan to a minor league contract? Seems like they would fit in to their minor league ranks.
Koufax is a possibility now that Fred Wilpon cost him his lifre savings
Any chance Banuelos makes a start at the back of the rotation at some point this season?
Msybe, but let's remember the guy has never even pitched in AAA. he'd have to make incredible progress this spring to make that leap
Am I the only one who still thinks the Yankees are as good as the Sox? The sox needed to bring in crawford and gonzalez. People forget they lost two pretty good players in Beltre and Martinez. And who knows what they get out of beckett, whom the yankees own recently?
No, you;re not. I wrote this a couple of weeks ago and all of New England came down on my head. But we'll see what happens. A lot of games to be played, a lot of things to go through before we crown a champion.
Stop posting that Sheff question every week than, PLEASE! Anyways, do YOU think that if the Mariners are out of it by the trade deadline, they will entertain the bundle of Yankee prospects and dollars for King Felix?
Sorry, I like answering it. it;s easy. I have the answer saved on my computer. Re Felix, I think anything is possible if the scenario you lay out comes to pass and the Yankees "prospects" still have the value in July that they appear to have now
What about Andy cancelling the 2/15 Steiner appearance? And the various reports about Yankees internally being optimistic? He's keeping in baseball shape. I get that they have to plan as if he's not coming back, but I think he is coming back. Too much evidence.
Tom, it's not really evidence, it's cnjecture. We donlt really know what kind of shape he is in, or if he ever actually committed to anything with Steiner. I think he's above the Favre-type histrionics and I'm not sure what purpose, if any, it would serve Cashman to be so publicly negative if he knows the guy is coming back. That said, anything is possible. I'm just not sure what some see as evidence isn;t merely wishful thinking
Sorry guys, gotta go. Big spring training meeting at the think-tank known as ESPN Central. Let's do this again next week. Thanks
