Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly Fight Freak chat. A bit of a slow weekend this week, but it kicks in next week with Montiel-Donaire and the Pacquiao-Mosley media tour continues. We have a solid card from Montreal tonight on ESPN2 and Marco Antonio Barrera is in action tomorrow night on Fox Deportes. So check out the notebook, the schedule, blogs and news stories from the week and let's get to it!

Chris (KC)

Morales is showing some heart agreeing to fight Maidaina, but that is about all he is showing. Maidaina was soooo close to KO'ing Khan, and took Ortiz to the woodshed, both far younger and currently better fighters than an over the hill Morales. Can't see a scenario other than Maidaina by KO.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Morales is a competitor. He wants a fight that means something instead of fighting another nobody. I think he feels after three comeback fights it's time to sink or swim. Obviously, it's a tough fight for him and he isn't what he was. I would imagine whatever happens, if he goes down, he'll go down swinging. If it's a blowout, at least there's a quality PPV undercard. I know Richard Schaefer really did his best to put on a strong undercard for the April 9 PPV.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Cloud-Erdei sounds fun. Who would you favor if they fought?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Interesting style fight. Erdei is a pure boxer, a little older and knows everything about the ring. Cloud is more of a bull with good power who is not nearly as experienced. But I have to go with the aggression and power and youth in a fight like this and would favor Cloud. Keep in mind, it's not that the fight is made. It is one possibility.

Isai (OKC)

Props to HBO on the Hopkins Pascal deal. They kinda set themselves a de facto tournament. Not a bad deal. Hopefully, Cloud and Erdei is made. "HBO Super Six - Hopkins, Pascal, Dawson, Andrade/?, Cloud, Erdie"

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Could wind up with some interesting fights, although I'm still not all that interested in a possible Pascal-Dawson rematch.

Des (Brooklyn)

I still believe regardless of opinion that Zab Judah with the right people guiding him had the talent and may still have the talent to defeat Floyd Mayweather jr! Do you believe Zab Judah will ever receive another big time fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Well he had his chance head to head and did well early before Floyd took him apart. I do think if Zab wins a belt next month, he will get a bigger fight for sure, especially in the good division he fights in. He could also go back up to 147 for a potential bigger fight.

Jordan (Matsue, Shimane)

Considering that Juan Manuel Marquez won't sign an extension with Golden Boy, how soon can he get out of his contract and sign with Top Rank so he can get a fight with Manny Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

It won't be that easy for Marquez. My understanding of his contract is that although it expires end of the month, Golden Boy has a rolling first/last option for the next 12 months.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, Is Braehmer too much, too soon for Nathan Cleverly, especially after his last disappointing performance? Thats offcourse if Braehmer's bowels hold up for this fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Brahmer is very experienced compared to Cleverly, but Cleverly is a good young fighter with a lot of confidence. I know he didn't look that good in his last fight but I'm sure he learned from it and I'm sure he is highly motivated for this fight. I think it's a pretty interesting match. Hopefully, Brahmer won't skip town the week of the fight like he did with Shumenov.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

What a great undercard for the Maidana PPV. I'm already looking forward to it. Job well done by Golden Boy on putting it together

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

It is pretty darn good. Guerrero-Katsidis is an excellent fight and I am also interested in Winky-Macklin. We'll have to wait and see what caliber of opponent Kirkland fights.

Ben (@boxingasylum)

In all seriousness, I fear for Morales' health against Maidana. What about you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

It's always a concern. I was at Pacquiao III, when he quit and I was at Diaz, when he talked about how his head hurt every time he got hit at the post fight press conference. Erik has been in a lot of wars.

Corey (Petersburg, WV)

Wow dan - I resisted Twitter all this time. And all it took was ESPN taking your tweets off the boxing page for me to join. Who knew your Tweets held so much power.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

LOL! Closing in on 10,000 followers. Come on Freaks, let's put it over! @danrafaelespn

Ron (Baltimore)

Any inside info on the Cruiserweight Super Six? Various outlets report it is on once guys finish (and win) their mandatory defenses.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

That is Sauerland's plan. There a couple of cruiser fights this weekend that will have a lot to say about what happens with that proposed tourney later this year.

jcs (Winnipeg, Can.)

Hey Dan, I'm pretty happy about the Morales/Maidana card from top to bottom but why is it on PPV? I understand there are a few solid fights, but Maidana will likely pulverize Morales and Winky will win 12 straight rounds in a one-sided but boring decision. The PPV aspect takes away some of my excitement.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Very simple: The nets didn't want to buy it and GB has an obligation to put on their fighters, so they have made a solid card and it's up to the consumer to either buy it or not. Pretty simple.

Isai (OKC)

Dan!!! It's too bad Jan and Feb were and are quiet boxing months. But man, I can't wait until March roles around. March, April, and May are really shaping up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Agreed!

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, please send love from the Freaks to my son Ryan, who was born yesterday. First test if he is a born Freak: let's see if he's awake for Donaire/Montiel...

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Let us know how that test turns out and congrats to a longtime Freak.

Aaron (MI)

When is the next fight camp 360 for the Super Six? Anymore talk of Froch vs Johnson at the Silverdome?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Next 360 for the Super Six has not been announced yet but I would imagine we will eps with the semis coming up. Silverdome, as far as I know, is still a possibility for the fight.

Matt (Columbus)

How much longer is Khan's deal with Golden Boy? Is he looking to dump GB?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Amir's April 16 fight is the last fight of his deal, but GB says it is talking to him about an extension. They've done a good job for Amir it seems to me and I would think he would stay for the right offer.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

Any updates on the Ducker's attempts to disqualify Chagaev from fighting in the UK?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Nothing specific. But I think I heard that The Ducker was interested in fighting Buster Douglas, since today is the 21st anniversary of him knocking out Tyson.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Lots of credit to Devon Alexander for not trying to make a soft bounce back fight after his loss to Bradley. First he talks about making a fight with Maidana and when that falls through he goes after Matthysse.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I think Devon will learn from his loss and come back strong. I take NOTHING away from Bradley at all but I do honestly believe Alexander got a little caught up in the hype and the moment. Bradley was a more mature fighter and obviously better focused on the task at hand. But I know from talking to the Alexander camp that they are not looking for a soft touch at all. Figure one solid fight in the summer and then maybe go for a title fight in the fall.

dylan (austin)

Dan, do you have a message for the Egyptian fight freaks in the room?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Friday Night Fights is on tonight, live from Montreal. Don't miss it! How's that?

jess (agoura hills)

Dan, is the DC leg of Pac-Mos tour still on? Will you be attending?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It is on, but it not open to the public and Mosley is not attending. Pacquiao will be meeting with Sen. Harry Reid and there will be a media availability.

Ray (NJ)

What are your thoughts on Sadam Ali?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Good prospect who is improving and has a fan friendly style.

Kevin (Denver)

Where does Lamont Peterson fit in at 140 right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Well he turned down a shot at Khan, so I would say he just needs to get back in the ring with the best fight he can make and win and he probably will get another shot at something.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Any possibility ESPN would try to get the rights to broadcast John-Yordan on ESPN3?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I don't know for sure but I would strongly doubt it. Getting a stream from Indonesia would be complicated and probably not worth the time or money.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

I am just glad someone finally spotted Winky from his milk carton picture.

Patrick (Phoenix)

After all the hype leading to the disaster that was Bradley-Alexander, do you believe that a Khan and Bradley with similiar styles is going to be that much better a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I do think Khan and Bradley, if it happens, would be a more fan friendly fight than Bradley-Alexander was. July 30 is the target date.

dylan (austin)

In spite of all the mileage on Arce, I like him as an opponent for Vasquez. Has Arce ever been a legitimate, lineal champion in any division?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I think Vazquez-Arce will be an exciting fight for as long as it goes. I am a huge Arce fan and he will be the underdog. Vazquez is a good up and comer and he'll be facing a true veteran who comes to fight. Arce as far as I recall has never been a lineal champion.

Sal (Toyo)

Is the Chambers/Rossy fight televised tonight? Thank you.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

No.

Jake (Brighton, UK)

Do you play video games Dan? Just downloaded the demo for Fight Night Champion. Its so awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Not much anymore. I've heard that game is good though, but have not played it or seen it.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, is Paul Williams still trying to gather all his marbles? Anything on the horizon for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Williams' return could come April 30 on HBO. They're talking about opponents. It could be paired with same-day taped coverage of Wladimir Klitschko's heavyweight title defense against Dereck Chisora.

Joe (NJ)

No kidding, but I went to a Chinese restaurant last night and one of my friends order Peking Duck and automatically Haye pops into my head. Isn't it crazy his name has become synonymous with the word Duck

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Has Victor Ortiz finally agreed to fight at 147 or is the proposed fight with Berto going to be at a catch weight after all?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

They are still negotiating a few things including the weight.

Brian (Penn State)

Love BHop-Pascal II and Dawson on the undercard, will you attend if it comes to fruition? Ever been to a fight in Canada?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I would anticipate attending that card, yes. I have never covered a fight in Canada and have wanted to for a long time. That would make a great first one.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

Hey Luis Collazo's a free agent!

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Hey who cares!

Sam (Santa Monica)

Is there any truth to the rumor that Maidana has signed Nacho to be his trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Yes, that is true.

dylan (austin)

Old school, gamer, eh Dan? Donkey Kong or PacMan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Big fan of both. They used to set up a few old school games in the press room at MGM for big fights and I used to spend a decent portion of my week kicking the butt of the MGM's Scottie Ghertner!

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Anything on who Pavlik might face on the Pac-Mosley undercard? Vera?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

TBA.

Rags (NYC)

Is Main Events just taking a flyer on Liakhovich or do they think they might have something there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Probably a combination. He's only 34, which isn't too old these days in the heavyweight division. He has talent. I've always viewed his problems more as a mental thing than a physical thing. Who knows what he can do? I think they saw a chance to sign a heavyweight who potentially could land a notable fight and maybe win something without them taking much of a risk.

JB (Toronto)

I'm building my library and I want to add some James Toney fights. I've got the Prince Charles Williams bout. What are some other entertaining fights he was in, before he got fat and lost focus?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

There are a bunch. I've always loved the Tim Littles fight. Toney was cut bad and his corner told him he needed the knockout and he went out and got the knockout. That was on HBO. One of the best fights of his career was when he beat Jirov for the cruiserweight title. Awesome action fight. I was lucky to be ringside.

Dave (San Jose)

Haha playing old arcade games at the MGM before a big fight? you have the tightest job ever Dan damn

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Somebody had to kick Gherner's rear!

Marcos Maidana (Nacho's gym)

I don't care what Juan Manuel says - I'm not drinkin' THAT.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

I'll always respect the White Wolf for his great scrap with Brewster.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

That is probably the best heavyweight of the past 10 years besides maybe Lewis-Klitschko.

Silva (San Diego)

After Chris Areeolla beat Joey Abel he jumped up on the ropes and started yelling "I'm back!" In your opinion what does that victory actually mean? Abel never really posed a threat. What does the Nightmare have to do to get another title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

It means very little. I was glad to see Cris back in action, but beating Abell is nothing to get all excited about. He did what he was expected to do.

Oscar (Miami, FLA)

Boxing has 16 weight divisions and 64 (?) championship belts! your thoughts on reducing the number of weight divisions to 8, every 10 or so lbs?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

17 weight divisions.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Whats up Dan, I must I was shocked to hear ablout Morales vs Maidana, Ive always been a huge Morlaes fan in his hay day, his beat down of Pac man in their 1st fight is my favorite Morales memory, Maidana is a huge guy big power, Im a little nervous for Morales.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

You are not alone.

Juan (Santa Ana)

Arreola VS Haye wouldn't that be a good fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I agree.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

A 3 fight deal for Hopkins is surprising to me. What if he loses to Pascal? With Pascal then fighting Dawson, and Bute with Showtime, who would that leave Hopkins to have that anyone wants to watch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

The deal is contingent on winning each fight.

les (hamilton)

any news on love child?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I've heard nothing.

JonG (Queens)

cool to see Pirog back in action. How many more Ws do you think he needs before he could potentally get a shot at martinez? maybe sometime in 2012 after a 2 or 3 win 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I don't think it's a matter of needing a certain number of wins. I think it's if both sides are interested and if a network is interested. They could have fought right now if that was the case.

Isai (OKC)

Morales provides Maidana a great chance to gain some Mexican fans. Although Maidana is hispanic, he is not Mexican. Good move by Maidana.

Charles (Philly)

Any news on Panchito Bojado?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I see this question basically every week. I have absolutely no idea. Not a clue.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

As this being the 21st anniversary since the biggest upset in boxing history and your DVD pick of the week, I watched the HBO movie Tyson, which starred Michael Jai White as Tyson. Great movie and portrayal of Tyson. Hope you've seen it

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I have seen it. Always liked that film.

sergio (san diego)

Dan, I've asked this several times and you never answer. Do you ever get invited to personal events like baptism, weddings, birthday parties, etc by some of the fighters you cover.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

LOL, no. I haven't been invited! I did attend Bernard Hopkins' retirement party a few years ago in Vegas. Turned out just to be a good party because he didn't really retire!

Amain (Las Vegas)

Can you pull some strings and get Jose Benavidez Jr. on FNF this season?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Top Rank is doing a show the night before Pacquiao-Mosley so maybe he will be on it.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Any thoughts on who Dawson might face on the undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

The leading candidate is Adrian Diaconu, who is a former titleholder and is from Montreal.

Marc (Malden, MA)

If I was Berto, I would tell Ortiz we're fighting at 147 or you can fight someone else.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I agree 1000000%. Did you read my blog yesterday?

Greg (Columbus)

King Freak, did you see mayweather hanging out with Arum at the superbowl?? Blew my mind!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I saw the photo.

Alex (San Diego)

I was going to ask if there's any upcoming news on David Lemieux, then I checked the schedule - banishment averted!

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Lucky you.

Steve (Hartford)

Is Pascal/Hop going to be in Montreal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

No set site yet but likely Montreal or Quebec City. But defintely not in Hartford, thank goodness.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Have to ask you your opinion about Austin Trout. I know the belt he won doesn't mean much but do you think he has the potential to make some noise at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Congrats to Trout for winning that belt, but I don't hold it in any regard. To me, Trout is a good young fighter with a possible bright future, but his title is as bogus as they come.

Mike (Philly)

This is in reference to JB and his question about James Toney, another great James Toney performance was against Iran Barkley, when Iran had just beat Tommy Hearns and NOBODY else would fight him. I think that was one of James Toney's best performances.

Brandon (Kansas City)

DTM, I just got in trouble at work for being in a "chatroom". Thanks a lot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

And this is my fault how exactly?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Sorry Fight Freaks, there were some technical problems in Bristol that knocked the chat down, but I am back now.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I have never fought in my life. How high would the WBC rank me and would the WBA make me a mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I assume you will immediately be named Pan Pacific regular super champion emeritus in recess.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Hey Dan, what are your thoughts on the WBC possibly giving Canelo the JR Middleweight strap? Does that not make him a paper champ? Thanks, love your work.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

100 percent a paper titleholder if he wins it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Freaks, by the way, I will be appearing via Skype on Friday Night Fights tonight.

Omar (Sydney)

btw, it's 4:50am here in Oz, freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Either that or you just have insomnia.

Michael (Toronto)

If Lewis-Klitschko and Liakhovich-Brewster are the top two heavyweight bouts of the past 10 years...I think #3 would be Maskaev-Rahman II. Seriously, that was a pretty good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I was at that fight. It was pretty good but not sure I hold in the same regard as those others.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

Mubarak will be our Egyptian President Emeritus when the March rankings are released.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

David Haye (London)

What's Lou Savarese up to these days?

Aaron (Hartford)

Cornelius White: any good ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I've never seen him, but I will be checking him on ShoBox tonight.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

I would put Vitali vs Corrie Sanders at number 3: great slugfest, with Vitali extracting familial revenge!

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Yeah, that was also a solid heavyweight fight. Damn, I was at that fight too. Haven't thought about that one in years. Actually, before the fight I was part of a panel on HBO talking about the heavyweight division. As I recall, it was Jim Lampley, me, Chris Byrd and Steve Springer, who was the boxing writer at the LA Times at the time. Ahhh, the gold old days. LOL.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Good blog on the WBC rankings. We all know their a complete joke, but good to be reminded just how BIG of a joke they are. I guess you can do whatever you want when you have no one to explain yourself to.

Joel (Eygpt)

Following the chat from Tahrir Square. I don't understand Arabic, but I think the 200,000 people here are chanting "Ra-Fa-el, Ra-Fa-el!"

Tom Green ((Road Trip Movie))

Maidana v. Morales, " Its going to be a blood bath"

Gary Shaw (Rockin a Jumpsuit)

Here Perro Perro Perro............

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Dan, I remember that panel, actually -- great stuff!

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Glad somebody besides me does.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, Great Larry Merchant quote from Tyson v Douglas! Got me thinking of the best Larry lines. Mine has to be 17 seconds to go in Gatti v Ward I, they are going toe to toe when he states "This is how it has to end". Freaks, any favorites. Happy B-day to the best color man in boxing!

Gregory Quattlebaum (Maryland)

Dan are there certain types of questions that you will not answer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Yes.

Alex (San Diego)

Your thoughts on Rico Ramos? I haven't seen him fight yet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Tremendous prospect. Fast, good amateur background, underrated power. Needs experience.

rick (corpus christi,tx)

Dan,are the exces. at HBO kicking themselves now that Mosley-Pac build is going to be aired on CBS

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I'm sure every day. And I am sure this week is tough for them with the press tour kicking off and will be next week with the press tour continuing in New York.

dylan (austin)

There are so many references to amateur careers of boxers, but big amateur tournaments get little media attention. Have you ever covered National Golden Gloves or US Olympic Trials? Do you follow the promising amateurs from the DC area?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I haven't covered them as far as attending them and writing about them, but I do follow some of the top amateur tournaments. Some of them are televised, like the Olympic trials or world championship and gloves finals, so I pay attention. I have some great old videos of amateur fights with guys who became today's top fighters.

Roman (London)

have you ever been to a UFC event? As a boxing freak, I must admit they put on a hell of a live show.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I haven't. I live very close to the Patriot Center in Northern Virginia and it has hosted a UFC before. If it comes back here I may go to see it live for myself.

Rags (NYC)

Do you think there will be an departmental turnover or a revision of business practices in the HBO Sports department as a result of losing Pac-Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

A lot of people are asking that question in the chat and in the industry. It's no surprise. What the outcome will be I have no idea.

Matt H (Phx, AZ)

Dan I switched my subscription from HBO to Showtime. I feel boxing will make a surge back to Showtime .

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I have heard that comment from quite a few people too.

Mickey (Dallas)

I thought you hated MMA?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I have never said that. People make dopey assumptions. What I have said is I have watched and am not a fan particularly but I also have nothing against it at all. If you like it, great. For me, I prefer not to watch it.

Kevin (Denver)

Dan: Have you seen Ismayl Syllakh? Only has 14 fights, but he looks like he could be a player soon....

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Seen him several times. We'll know a lot more after his ESPN2 main event against fellow prospect and former top amateur Yordanis Despiagne next month.

Isai (OKC)

I'm surprised HBO hasn't retaliated against Showtime by motivating Mayweather to fight again. It's crazy, but without Cotto or Pac, they really do not have one PPV star.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

You're right and Maidana-Morales won't exactly fill the void.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Do you think that a good reception to Fight Camp will at least have a shot to get boxing back on CBS. If bowling and beach volleyball can be on the networks on the weekend then surely boxing can.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Yes I do.

Adam (DuPage)

Who is in the mix to fight Paul Williams April 30?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I really haven't heard any specific names other than Cintron being mentioned for a rematch, but I don't even think that is anything more than talk right now.

Conrad (Dallas)

Who do you consider the most powerful person in boxing? Bob Arum? De la Hoya? Mayweather? Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

THE FREAKS!

dylan (austin)

If the freaks are united, we will never be divided!

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Except when it comes to Bing's comments.

CHOPPER (Brooklyn)

Really appreciated your remarks on how Haye and Booth can't seem to make a fight with the K-Brothers, yet others have little problem doing so. This is something Haye's delusional Brit fans don't want to think about.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

They have their heads in the sand.

Roy (Reno)

This move to CBS has really excited me for this fight. I had promised not to order it, but with the undercard and the Fight Camp 360 (which is far better than 24/7 imo) I will be buying it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

You are not the only one, which is why the PPV will do very well.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Will Pacquiao be on Letterman?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Wouldn't shock me one iota.

sergio (san diego)

It was nice to see Schaefer say he made the morales PPV for the freaks. It's good to know our voice is heard. We coudln;t have done it without you Dan, giving us the platform.Dan for president in 2012!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

LOL.

Horn (Vegas)

If anyone in the industry EVER questions questions the power of the freaks, please refer them to the BBQ chat...

Lucas (Danbury, CT)

Did anything become of the Delvin Rodriguez vs Love Child proposed fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Unfortunately it probably won't happen. I was told Delvin's trainer talked him out of it, didn't like the fight.

James (Lexington)

Hopkins - Pascal II slated to be on regular HBO?

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

While I'm sure in the end Maidana will be too young and strong for Morales, he actually is the perfect opponent for him at this stage of his career. He is a come forward guy that Morales won't have to look hard to find. And I can see Morales outboxing him early in the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I actually agree with that. It's what happens later that would worry Morales fans.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan props to ESPN for making some very nice fights over the course of the next couple months. A lot of competitive fights and young and up and coming prospects. Never thought I'd day it but HBO should take notes from ESPN on not needing to overpay to make some very intriguing fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

We do have a pretty good lineup coming. But we also don't have the biggest names in the major fights. But ESPN does very well with its limited boxing budget.

Javier (Puerto Rico)

dan I am going to the card you mention of quintana coming back on feb 18 there is a good prospect and former olimpian Jose Pedraza that will make his debut on that card alot of people think he will be a future champion

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Yup I have heard people rave about him.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, what are your thoughts on Pacquiao's new harido?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Justin Beiber or the Beatles. I can't decide.

Chris (Columbus, OH)

So if the move to Showtime makes Pacquiao-Mosley a success, Bob Arum has managed to sell garbage fights based on a.) a stadium and b.) the broadcasting network. And he still hasn't made Gamboa-Lopez. God bless that man.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

That's why, love him or hate him, Arum is a genius.

Horn (Vegas)

The only chance Shane has against Pacquiao is if Pac's Justin Beiber haircut covers his eyes.

Harvey (Uk)

Why does pac man keep fighting bums?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Hatton, De La Hoya, Mosley, Cotto, Clottey, Margarito are not bums. You, Harvey, are banned. Is Banishment hungry today?

dylan (austin)

Very cool that you have amateur bouts in your video library! Any favorites come to mind?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I have so many hard to say. Hundreds of Olympic fights with future champions. I am fond of the fight from the world amateur championships when Odlanier Solis stopped The Ducker.

Horn (Vegas)

Why do I have a feeling that Harvey from the UK is massaging David Haye's feet as we speak?

sergio (san diego)

do you think ESPN may bring back wed night fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I guess anything is possible, but that is unlikely.

Steve (NYC)

Has a fighter ever said enough to the belts bs and turned down a title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Sure, it happens. For example, Tarver and Glen Johnson both gave up alphabet belts to fight each other for a big payday on HBO rather than defend against mandatories for a pittance.

The Good Doctor Filth (Cleveland)

Have fun with Harvey, banishment...though, in all fairness, Clottey is kind of a bum...and Margarito minus plaster probably is too.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Guys who get knocked out fight after fight or who are 7-15 are bums. Legitimate professionals ranked in the legit top 5 of a division with quality records are not bums. Watch your step or you will be joining Harvey.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Worse hairdo - Manny's "Bieber" cut or Malignaggi's dreadlocks?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Maliginaggi's. Easily.

Bing (Banishment Land)

Hi Harvey!

Brent (Detroit)

Clottey is not a bum, he beat Judah and had a great scrap with Cotto

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

That is my point.

Alex (San Diego)

Pacquiao made Clottey a bum. I had Clottey up after ten rounds against Cotto.

FRED (Saint Louis)

Now, I can't stop thinking about that Toney/Jirov fight. I think there were moments when Toney fought better with his back against the ropes than Ali. Kinda like Burton in the first round against Ward.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Awesome fight. James was in GREAT shape for that fight and 100% ready.

CHOPPER (Brooklyn)

The terms "bum" and "tomato can" are thrown around far too liberally by many boxing fans.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I couldn't agree more.

Eric (DFW, TX)

Harvey must be Bing's English cousin.

Dean (Here and There)

Do you keep records of your scorecards for various fights? I'm working on a research project and would find access to such a database extremely useful. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I have all of my scorebooks from fights I have scored at ringside. I have several sitting on the desk behind me in my office.

CHOPPER (Brooklyn)

"Guys who get knocked out fight after fight or who are 7-15 are bums. Legitimate professionals ranked in the legit top 5 of a division with quality records are not bums."MANDATORY READING FOR ALL BOXING FANS!

Jack Wilshere (London)

You continually pour scorn on Haye and his level of opposition yet you always tune in to watch his fights. Why is that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I like watching The Ducker when he fights. I think in all seriousness I a video of every single one of his pro fights as well as some amateur fights. He fought solid guys as a cruiserweight and was in some good scraps.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Who do boxing people consider the best American amatuer fighter of all time ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Good question. Mark Breland is often mentioned. Although he didn't win a gold medal in the Olympics (got bronze) Antonio Tarver is one of the all-time great American amateurs. Obviously, then Cassius Clay is highly regarded, Sugar Ray Leonard, members of the 84 US Olympic team.

John (Denver)

Dan, what are your favorite toppings on a pizza?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

These are my readers.

Jay (Houston, TX)

Dan-ibal the Cannibal, just to clarify, someone asked earlier if Pavlik had an opponent for May 7. Is it still TBA whether or not he's actually fighting, or just TBA on who he's facing?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

He is probably fighting, although not 100 percent yet and his opponent, if he fights, is TBA.

Kevin (Denver)

I sometimes liken ESPN2 main event bouts to AA baseball, with ShoBox or BAD being AAA and of course HBO or Showtime World Championship Boxing being the bigs!AA ball shows you a mix of the up-and-comers and occasionally you get a cagey veteran trying to make his way back.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I have had that same thought. Although BAD is major leagues too.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

Is Haye just being a businessman now at Heavyweight? Seems he fought everyone at Cruiser, but since he's moved up he's cherry-picking

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Exactly.

Clarence (Redondo)

Speaking of the '84 team, what's Henry Tillmann up to? Always thought he wasted his potential.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I thought he was in prison for murder.

Dominique (Quebec)

If you were a betting man would you put your money on Lemieux taking out Rubio in one round (a la Camacho Jr) or do you think this thing could become a protracted slugfest? If you ask me, the latter scenario could be dangerous for Lemieux. Rubio has some pop and could give Lemieux problems in the later rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I think Rubio is made to order for Lemieux and it could be another early knockout.

Roberto (Miami, FL)

Dan, on a side note, have you ever been to any of the Wrestlemanias? With the recent news that Miami is going to be hosting Wrestlemania 28, I wanted your take to see what I could expect. I've been in full nostalgia mode for the past couple of days and have been in awe of the sheer entertainment value the WWE can shed out. Pound for pound, would a Wrestlemania be the most entertaining thing you could experience for the money?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I attended WrestleMania I at Madison Square Garden with my father. Somewhere I still have the program and my giant yellow and red Hulk Hogan foam finger.

Horn (Vegas)

Euros need to understand that when we mock Haye, it is not because he is not a good fighter, but because he fails to fight quality opposition. Haye would not even be mentioned if he was not worth talking about. Something to think about.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

So is safe to assume that since the Manny-Shane fight is a showtime PPV that Jimmy Lennon Jr will be the ring announcer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

You can take that to the bank unless Jimmy accidentally drinks Marquez's drink before the fight.

guani (Puerto Rico)

dan do you find strange that humberto soto will take such a tought tune up fighh considering he is co feature against antillon is the biggest event of the year

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yes, I think it is quite stupid.

Brandon (Kansas City)

Dan, what's the most boring fight you've ever seen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Too many to count, but I sat thru Chris Byrd-DaVarryl Williamson and was suicidal when it was over.

Jake (England)

Cleverly-Brahemer signed is a good fight! Mitchell-Murray on the undercard is also a good good scrap

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

That is looking like a terrific card. I am delighted by it!

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

Tillman only did a year for the manslaugter charge (2002), but then did 37 months in 2004 on federal identity theft charges. He's out now and working underprivleged kids in California somewhere.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

There ya go.

Michael (Hollywood, CA)

Have you heard any rumblings about HBO's reaction to Pacquiao going to Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I've heard a lot. It's the talk of the industry.

Jose A. (San Juan, PR)

In honor of Tyson-Douglas, what other great upset can you come up with that comes close to that one?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Holyfield-Tyson was considered a huge upset also.

Isai (OKC)

Would love to see Cleverly - Brahemer on ESPN3

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Agreed.

Walter (LA, CA)

So the Klitschko-Chisora fight has officially been picked up by HBO or is it still in negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Still talking, but I suspect it will get done.

Shawn (Vernon Hills)

was money the reason HBO did not get the Pac-Mosley fight or did they just flat out reject it? if it is the latter, someone should get fired.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

They didn't reject it, they wanted it.

Isai (OKC)

Vitali vs Solis on HBO is justifiable. Vitali rarely fails to put on a good fight. Wlad is the bro that can get a little boring.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Vitali vs Solis is not going to be on HBO. It is probably going to be on Epix.

Isai (OKC)

So, this Epix deal is really going to go through.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Yes, most likely. It's going to happen from what I am told by those involved.

Mark (Brooklyn NY)

Dano,Mark Breland did win Gold at the 84 games not Bronze. Get your facts straight!

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

No kidding. I didnt say he didn't. I mentioned him and others from 84.

David (Houston)

I bet Bradley ends up signing with Top Rank. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

He is still under contract to Gary Shaw.

Isai (OKC)

I don't mind that another network is trying to break in the game, but another pay network puts a lot of financial stress on the fans. Not sure this is the best time Epix to get involved. Dishing out another ten bucks a month on top of the HBO/SHOWTIME 20/mth is brutal. But whatever.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

They will do what they think will lure subscribers. Period.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

So Lou Dibella tweets he is not swearing much anymore, should we believe him Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Maybe in his tweets he swears less but not on the phone. LOL.

Bert (Minneapolis)

D$- awesome blog note, about the ease at which Adamek-Klitschko was made. Any response from the DUCKER?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

No, but that doesn't surprise me. They live in their own little world.

Cody (Minneapolis)

What % of the country can order EPIX if they wanted to??? maybe 35

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

No idea, but I know I have it on Ch. 199 on my cable.

Brian (DC)

Liakhovich pulled off the rare feat of being in one of the most exciting fights of the decade, and then possibly the most boring (vs. Briggs)... in back-to-back fights!

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Excellent point. The Brewster fight was awesome, the Briggs fight was horrific other than the last 10 seconds when he got drilled.

jerry (canoga)

Didn't it look so weird seeing the massively media attended Pacquiao press conference with Pac sitting beside Showtime top honchos instead of HBO? Greenburg must be begging Nelly to tell him it's "Just a Dream"

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I watched it and it was odd I have to admit. In one story I wrote I typed HBO PPV for the fight by accident and then had to delete it and re-type Showtime PPV.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, If you had to guess as to what impact the CBS involvement will have on the PPV #'s what do you think it would be? With the 360 sched they put out this crappy fight might do close to 2 mil buys.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I think it's going to be huge. But nobody really knows. This is uncharted territory right now.

Omar (Sydney)

so other than katsidis and tszyu who else (now and before) has stood out to you in term of boxing from australia?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Jeff Fenech was terrific. Vic Darchinyan has made a lot of good fights too.

Sal (Chicago)

Nazim still training Shane?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Yes he is, although he is not on the press tour because he is with Steve Cunningham in Germany for his fight tomorrow.

Tony (Tampa)

I remember the days when boxing was on the major networks and Alex Wallau and Dan Dierdorf were commentators. Wallau went on to become the pres. of ABC and Dierdorf is still doing NFL games. Seems a long time ago.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

It was a long time ago.

Leonard Ellberbe (Las Vegas, NV)

FYI, no meeting between Floyd and Arum ever took place.

Joe (PA)

Better all time Roy Jones Jr or Michael Spinks?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Roy Jones.

Mike (Nj)

When you say Golden Boy has a rolling 12 month option on Marquez what exactly does that mean?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

It means for the next 12 months they can match any offer he receives from another promoter.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Kayoode-BJ Flores? Who cares? Why are these guys sending out press releases insulting each other.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Yawn.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, I will always think of the WBC when I see Corn Chowder now

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Was that the best video ever or what to go with a column slamming the vile WBC or what?

Edwin (Houston)

What ever happened to the boxing minute videos on the site? Those were pretty insightful segments.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I have no idea.

Nela (London)

Do you follow any of the youtube boxing blogs?Theres a fair sized boxing community on that site. Thanks for the chat

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

No. I don't even know what you are talking about.

OC (DENVER)

Dan, who do you favor in the Alvarado vs. Paris fight? Big step up for both guys.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Alvarado. I have seen Paris a few times and have been unimpressed and I was at his last fight against Augustus on the Bradley-Alexander card and I thought he lost.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Weights are in from Germany: Interim WBA Cruiserweight Title, Steve Herelius: 89,7 kg, Yoan Pablo Hernandez: 89,7 kg. IBF Cruiserweight Title, Steve Cunningham: 90 kg, Enad Licina: 89,9 kg

Fernando (Ft Carson)

I met Nazim at the MGM before the Mayweather fight very nice and friendly are most trainers this approachable

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Nazim is a great guy.

Nela (London)

sorry my mistake i meant vlogs not blogs

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I still dont know what you are talking about.

Thunder and Popo Fans (All over the world)

Come on freaks we need 48 more Twitter followers for Dan to hit 10k. You know what happens after that....

Kevin (Boston)

Hey Dan, is Delvin fighting Ouma or is that just a possibility.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Ouma, from what I am told, was rejected as an opponent by ESPN.

Stinky (North Dakota)

Sorry I am late to the Chat Dan. I doubted that you were even having the chat today. I saw only one set of footprints in the sand and thought I was all alone, but then I realized you were carrying me the whole time

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

That's so sweet. I think.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

Hey Dan, in the notebook today you said Mike Jones hired Danny Davis who is BHOP's stength/conditioning coach for the past 8 years. Am I confused, but I thought it was Mackie Shilstone?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Mackie only worked with BHop for one or two fights a few years ago.

BANISHMENT (Dante's Inferno)

Stinky, you're too crazy even for me to eat

@TheBoxingEmpire (Twitter)

FOLLOW @danrafaelespn on Twitter NOW!!! And remember, friends don't let friends pay small sanctioning fees

Mike (Massapequa )

Best Larry Merchant quote hands down - Michael Grant getting KO'd by McCline in the 1st round - " to say he has a glass jaw is an insult to glass " Priceless

Nela (London)

Youtube boxing vlogs as in youtube videos that people upload in which they predict, discuss fights, fighters, etc. Never mind.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Sounds enthralling. Not.

Joe (NJ)

Dan have you ever thought about making a boxing IQ test that if you pass you get a document displaying your freak status. All for a small sanctioning fee of course

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I like it, I like it!

Alex (Cleve, OH)

Is it just me or does The Ducker remind me of The Miz.... I can just imagine him going to the ring for his fight against some Tomato Can and yelling "IMMM THE HAYEMAKER AND IM AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWESOME!!!"

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Here's the difference: The Miz IS awesome!!!!!! WWE CHAMP!!!!!!

Terence (DC)

You coming to see Fernando in Salisbury, MD? You wont be disappointed in the crowd and more importantly you wont be disappointed in Fer-nan-do!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

No, I will be in Las Vegas next week for Montiel-Donaire.

Isai (OKC)

Does the WBC ever give explanations for their rankings? How and why does Morales get number one? That's sad.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

No, they dont usually consult me.

Juan Manuel Marquez (Mexico)

To Dan reaching 10,000 followers, I propose a toast..!

Bennigan (Boston)

Dan, I have a man crush on Nonito Donaire. He is a studd!

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

It's OK, a lot of fight fans do.

Gilberto Mendoza, Jr. (WBA Headquarters)

Upon reaching 10,000 Twitter Followers, I will officially make Dan the 5th titlist as Super diamond belt holder emeritus in chatroom recess.....for a small sanctioning fee of course

carl (dont worry bout it)

kid at work next to me smells terrible. how would a freak handle this situation?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I'll throw this one open to the Freaks. Any suggestions? No Valuev jokes.

Brandon (Kansas City)

Montel Dantavious Porter, how long has Garcia been training Nonito Donaire?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I believe this will officially be their second fight together, although they have known each other a long time.

Richard (Oxford UK)

Tell Richard Schaefer next time you speak that the April 9th card is indeed 'freak' worthy and thanks for that, but if he plays ball with the WBA elevating Khan to 'Super' champ and having Maidana-Morales for the 'Regular' title, he loses huge credibility

Joe (NJ)

try to out stink him in his own game

Charles D. (Inkster, MI)

Danny, Big come Back for your Duke boys....Seth Curry is the Real Deal.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

HUGE win the other night against UNC. Always great to beat your hated rival.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow, Scotland)

I have a mancrush on Sergio Martinez.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

The greatest of all grand campeons, Sergio Maravilla Martinez!!

bill (carmel, ny)

carl at work. if you want to be subtle leave can of deoderant on his deck, otherwise take can, take dead aim and blast him.

Joe (NJ)

Carl go to Taco bell for a late lunch and order 10 beef and bean burritos, then let revenge begin.

Justin Bieber (NYC)

Tell Pacman to get his own hairstyle, I had it first. He can't steal my doo!!!

Rags (NYC)

Nice to see Camacho Jr. staying consistent...6 lbs overweight (166) for a nothing fight!

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Why should anything change ever in his disappointing career?

Silva (San Diego)

Dan, thanks for always calling it like you see it. You're never afraid to rip promoters or sanctioning bodies. We appreciate it! Just out of curiosity though, does anyone in "The business" ever give you flack for telling it like it is?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Every day. But I have iron skin and don't care.

Steve (Minneapolis)

My Wife was offered a nice job in Hartford this week, Is there any amount of money that would make moving there worth it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Wow, you now have a decision to make. I don't envy you.

David (Cape Canaveral)

Put a zip lock bag of worms, leaves, bugs on his desk before lunch with a note...if you're gonna' smell like a skunk, you can eat like one.

Justin (Seattle)

A huge Thank You from all of the Freaks for checking out the latest rankings. I went to the site once and my computer immediately got a virus. Also hoping you could confirm or deny that Sugar Ray Robinson was the mandatory for the Super Special Gold and Diamond plated Spiffy title at Middleweight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny but I don't think so. Only the WBO ranks dead guys.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, the more I think about it the more I see Carl Froch-Glen Johnson being a FOY candidate? Am I crazy for thinking that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Not at all. I think it could be a terrific fight.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Why would HBO want Williams back? I was thinking about it and I don't see why they would want him back. He can't draw. Doesn't do good ratings. Last fight was a KO of the Year victim.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Why wouldn't they? He is still a top fighter. When you pressure a guy to fight the best guy out there and he loses you don't just throw him away. And what do you know about ratings? Obviously nothing. The fight with Martinez was the second-highest rated HBO fight of 2010. And he makes good fights generally. So as long as he's not fighting a stiff and you don't break the bank, I would also want Paul Williams back on the air.

Prentice (East Lansing)

Dan I love your chats. In fact my two boys are named after you - Dan (age 1) and Rafael (age 3). I've read every single one of your chats multiple times and the centerpiece of my day is when your articles comes out. I'm trying to transfer my job to northern VA to be closer to you. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Freaky enough that I may want to call the cops.

psycho (LaLaLand)

dan wasnt tyson-douglas on showtime? in your blog you daid HBO

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Ummm, no, it was HBO.

Aaron (Hartford)

Where does Sergio Mora go from that terrible defeat last week Dan? He was more entertaining to watch but I think its safe to say he can say bye bye to bigger pay days

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Who knows? Sergio is at the crossroads obviously.

Brandon (Kansas City)

Tyson was on showtime.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Tyson fought more times on HBO than Showtime in his career actually. His first fight on Showtime wasn't until the first fight with Ruddock.

JB (Toronto)

Thanks for the advice freaks. I now have Toney vs Littles and Barkley in my possession for some weekend viewing. God bless the internet.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Nice. Happy to help.

cody (montana)

dan will you please tell these people just because a fighter loses doesnt make him a bum!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I did!!

Bermese (new mexico)

dan i have tears streaming down my cheeks i love your chats man they really give me spiritual healing. freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

No, but I think there's medication for that.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Is it me or does Sergio Mora come across as very unlikeable?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Actually, on a personal level Sergio is a good guy. I know we give him the business in the chats and I have been criticial of his fights but I actually like the guy.

Joe (NY)

Yes, HBO covered Tyson-Douglas, but I've always wondered that; why did Tyson make that switch Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Don King was in a beef with HBO. He and Tyson were upset with Larry Merchant and some of his comments about Tyson. King gave then HBO Sports president Seth Abraham an ulimatum to either get rid of Larry or lose Tyson. Seth stood up to King and took Larry's side. King took Tyson to Showtime. HBO actually thrived in Tyson's absence.

Dominique (Quebec)

If my boss knocks me down because I am participating in your chat instead of working do I still have my job if I get up before the count of 10?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Is it Psycho Freak Day today, DTM? Scary.......

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Every Friday is Psycho Freak Day.

bill (pgh)

forgive me for joining the chat late, king freak. Great show on FNF last Friday, I'd be interested in rematches of the opener and of Vera-Mora. Any chance of seeing them?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

I tell ya what: If I'm going to watch another Mora fight I wouldn't mind at all a rematch with Vera.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

HBO thrived in Tyson's absense and along with Tyson, Showtime got a lot of Keith Holmes and William Joppy....

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Exactly. Those were the dark times for Showtime, when it was trapped in an exclusive output deal with King, who served up crap month after month with a few good ones mixed in.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

There's a lot of "man crush" talk going on in the chat today. Let me stir the pot a bit... Shane Mosley has nice eyes

Whistler (SB)

Tyson Fury, the next Unified Heavyweight Champion. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

I think you may have fallen down and hit your head.

Matt (Dallas)

Schafer wasn't kidding when he said, "I got the 'Fight Freak' card done." That card looks pretty damn good on paper

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan-O, after seeing the WBC rankings, in all seriousness, can't there be a fraud investigation? I know they are based in Mexico but they do a lot of business in the US. I think they would qualify for a RICO charge, same as mafia members.

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Not really sure but the rankings are a joke.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, as a big boxing fan i must take your not having commented at all on "the fighter" to mean you may have some issues with how things are portrayed. it seems strange that you have no comment on a movie that has been nominated for several oscars and could bring higher visibility to the sport of boxing than almost any fight imaginable.

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I haven't seen it that is why.

chris (san diego)

WBC and jose suleiman are a joke, how is canelo alvarez #1 contender, who did he beat? how is chavez jr. #1 by beating no one?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

They are Mexican. Pretty easy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

I wish I could just post all the insanity I receive in the queue. You Freaks are on your game today.

Billy (Tuscon)

Haye-Boytsov. What do you think, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Would be a good fight. And I think it is possible. They are both assoicated with Golden Boy and Boytsov is just behind Chagaev in the WBA's terrible ratings.

Tony (Jersey)

Dan, are you checking out the Cunningham fight on the net tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Of course, that is the plan.

Mitch (Oakland)

Dan. I enjoy your writing and analysis. However, I have no plans to stalk you in any way. Sorry.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Thank you.

David (Houston)

Who is the guy that does the fight plans with Teddy Atlas? What is his actual job?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

The usual guy who does it is Saul Avelar. He is a former fighter and works as a stage manager for the show.

Anthony (San Diego)

You wouldnt happen to know when morales vs Maidana go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

I sent an email to Richard Schaefer. If I hear back before the end of the chat, I will let you know.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

The Adamek-McBride fight, originally scheduled for April 23, has been moved to April 9.

Silva (San Diego)

Hey Dan I I haven't seen any of Eric Morales' fights during his "comeback" How has he looked to you? Do you think he has a "Legit' chance to take out Maidana?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

I have seen all three. He has looked ok in spots and shaky in others. Physically, he has looked good in the last two. I don't think he beats Maidana though. But I also don't think he gets knocked out in the first round.

dylan (austin)

Left work, got a haricut, went home, ate lunch, walked the dog, came back to work.....and the chat is still going. Good work!

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Why are you surprised????

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

In honor of the Egyptian revolution I stormed the WBC offices.... When I left I was ranked number 1 at 135 even though I'm 257lbs!

Jonathan (Nevada)

Dan I remember the first time I stumbled across your Boxing page on ESPN.Com, I can honestly say the that was the greatest day of my life. (No Exaggeration)

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

On the one hand, I thank you. On the other, I kinda feel bad for you. Ya fell me bro?

Mike (Rochester, NY)

I'm growing my hair and styling it like Manny's :)

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Nice.

Craig D (AC expressway)

Dan, my Dad and I are enroute to the Ramos fight. Look for two huge Italian heads about the 5th row!

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Have fun.

Roman (Atlanta)

Dan,I know it is a while away, but who do you like between Brad Solomon vs. D. Hopkins. Big fan of Solomon and it is seems like a jump up in competition for him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

It's an interesting fight. If Solomon is the real deal, he can win that fight. Hopkins is talented though and experienced. I honestly have no idea who wins it.

Justin (Indy)

They say the only things in life you can count on are Death and Taxes. I think it's safe to say we can add Dan Rafael's Friday afternoon chats.

Jeremy (Ireland)

My best friend has a man crush on The Ducker, he constantly praises his abs, what can be done for him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Lobotomy?

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Who is commentating for the Donaire/Montiel fight on HBO? Kellerman or Merchant?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

It's Boxing After Dark, so that team is Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones.

Damien (Ireland)

Guillermo Rigondeux vs Willie Casey next month. Any thoughts on this Dan? Does Rigondeux have the heart and stomach for a battle with a heavy handed scrapper like Casey?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

I've actually been hearing the fight is in trouble since they have no TV deal and there is supposedly some sort of issue with the arena.

Jeff (Dallas)

Disappointed to see Burgos now facing Archuleta on Feb 25. Great card up until the change.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

I hear ya, but not Burgos' fault Cruz pulled out.

Vinod (NYC)

Anik took offense to the comments you posted about him in last week's chat.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

LOL. He should know I was goofing with him. Anik is my man!

Aaron (MI)

What is the best place to watch full post fight and pre-fight press conferences for fans? Is there any place on the net to watch this? I believe this would be popular.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

I don't know of anything live but some sites put up videos of the press conferences.

Jake (Arl Hts)

Dan,So my wife is Polish and she just left me, so now I am rooting for McBride-

JHBVTA24 (Ventura, CA)

Fernando Vargas comeback? Serious, money run or both?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

I suspect it's money and boredom in retirement.

Ronak (NY)

Do you think Mayweather vs Pacquiao could completely sell out Cowboys stadium?

Kris Krepps (GR)

Could a congressman in this country get away with a haircut like Manny's?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

That's a good question. I don't think so, at leasy not without ridicule.

Ben (Boston)

Who has a better chance to win? Chisora or Solis?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I don't think either beat the Klitschkos but between the two I would give Chisora a slightly better shot based on his punching power.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Does HBO figure that they have more money to spend now that they dont have a PPV fight involving Manny? Is that why they went after the Hopkins-Pascal rematch and why they have talked about putting Cloud on as well ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Not having Pacquiao does not impact that. They don't pay a fee for Pacquiao's PPV fights.

Mike (DC)

Happy belated to Larry Merchant."Derrick Jefferson I LOVE YOU!!!"

Ronak (NY)

Who would win in a mythical matchup between Mayweather and Trinidad?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Mayweather would play with Tito and soundly outpoint him.

Kolbe (Lancaster)

Ahhhhhhhhhh...

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

The Love Child?????????

Corey (Westwick)

I was Glad to see Pascal and Hopkins will fight again. Everybody knows Bhop won the first time out and this time

@TheBoxingEmpire (Twitter)

Can you imagine Jose Sulaiman explaining an affair to his wife? "You see Honey, you have been elevated to my Wifeius Emeritus, while the other woman is now my interim Wife"

Ross (Worcester, Ma)

Any update on Edwin Rodriguez?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

Did you read today's notebook? Let's get with the program.

js (soCal)

CNN just said Mubarak has been banished. did you do this???? idan, you are a powerful man.

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny this.

Ronak (NY)

Whens the last time a big fight has gone to Boston?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

Off the top of my head, I covered Ricky Hatton-Luis Collazo there at the TD Banknorth Garden and I also covered the season finale of The Contender there when Bika beat Codrington in an awesome fight at the same arena.

CHOPPER (Brooklyn)

I was at Hatton-Collazo! Who did you have winning that one, Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

I had Collazo. I think by one point.

Dylan (Ft. Collins, CO)

It all makes sense now, the reason Pacquiao was dodging blood testing requirements is because he is suffering from Bieber Fever!

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

LOL!

Roman (Atlanta)

Why doens't ESPN get into the Boxing PPV game? You would think that if that got a great fight and could put out a good card, they have the brand name and built in marketing with all their channels to grab casual boxing fans that might otherwise not purcahse.

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

That question goes above my pay grade. But I don't disagree.

TN (DC)

I've heard that the Pacquiao-Mosley Promotional Tour Stop Event coming to DC on 2/15 will be a "media-only" event. If this is true, do you have any thoughts on why fight fans have been excluded from participating?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

Because it is in the Senator's office.

RJ (Minneapolis)

I think Manny looks like more like rod blagojevich

Rags (NYC)

So with Khan-Bradley on the table, Maidana-Morales signed, and Berto-Ortiz being negotiated, does an Alexander-Peterson bout do anything for you?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Nothing whatsoever. I have zero interest in that match.

Isai (OKC)

Alexander - Mathysse --- Love it. Great match up for both fighters. I am not sold on either, so this would really interest me.

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

It is interesting.

KoolKC107 (DeLand, Fl)

CBS doing 360 is a great step. But I'd love to see bouts Saturday afternoons on all the broadcast channels if possible, but especially the resurrection of ABC Wide World and CBS Sports Spectacular

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

One step at a time.

Sean (Ireland)

Fantasy match, Mayweather or Chavez at welterweight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Mayweather. Come on.

Richard (Oxford UK)

What kind of crowd should be expected for Donaire-Montiel? Terrific match-up, but I get the feeling the attendance might be somewhat disappointing.

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

I have no idea. Have heard nothing about the tickets and I know Top Rank is totally focused on the Pacquiao-Mosley press tour this week and early next.

Brock (Illinois)

Oleydong Sithsamerchai lost his trinket today to a man who entered with only 6 pro fights. Is the 7th fight fastest ever for a trinket?

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

No it's not.

karlc (sm, ca)

the current WBC rankings remind me so much of my Facebook friends -it's just another long list of stiffs and nobodies.

Gerardo (AZ)

Ha! Prime Chavez walks through anything Pretty Boy throws at him and breaks him down. Surprising to the analysts? Maybe. But that's what he did.

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

I don't see a Chavez-Mayweather being much different than Whitaker-Chavez.

Ronak (NY)

What the heck is a trinket?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

An alphabet title belt.

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)
