Greetings from Denver where its icy cold, but the Mavericks most certainly are not. Two ten game winning streaks. We'll see if Number 11 is in the cards tonight! Fire away
Oops, pilot error to begin. Just got up a few minutes ago. REached the hotel about 3:45 AM Dallas time. Anyway, Casey asks if there was any reason for the Mavericks to acquire (Fill in the blank) for Roddy. The answer to me is that ther is only one person, and that's Carmelo. Anyone else, I'm not doing it, although I would love to find a way to get Tayshaun Prince in here if possible. Just love his game
If the mavs were down by 1 who would you want taking that last second shot Caron Butler, Jason Kidd, or Dirk?
Is there really a question here. Dirk is one of the greatest clutch scorers under any definition in NBA history. Great shot by Kidd to beat Boston, Butler really hasn't taken that many to my knowledge in his career regardless of location. Jason Terry is another one who knows no fear in that situation, but it's the Big German you want. hands down
Are all these close games with different people providing the lift going to help this team in the long run? There will be so many options to go to in a necessarily clutch situation because they've all helped the team overcome lapses by other players over the course of the year.
Well, there are two ways to look at it. You have to figure in the playoffs there are going to be some close games in the playoffs. Last year the Mavericks were fabulous in close games (17-6 by five points or less), but when they had those chances against the Spurs, they didn't win any of them. Still, I have to believe that practice makes perfect, (Or nearly so). Having said that, I would sure prefer they win a few of these games by 12-15 points, but they never seem to do that
Obviously Cuban and Donnie are looking at potential trades given that they waived Pavlovic for "flexibility". And one of the team's strongest trade chip is Roddy. Is there an urgency to get him on the court, so the team could showcase him as a trade chip?
I think if that was their thinking, they might have had him back on the floor already. Six months away is a long time.
Dirk is hands down my favorite player in the history, like Jordan is to most. I just don't know why he doesn't shoot like the other top scorer. He shoots 16 times a game while others shoot 19-20 times. If he shot a few more times a game it would benefit the team. He'd be taking his normally great shot selection and eliminate other sometimes terrible shot selection. I wish they would put the ball in his hands more.
I'm really not sure why that is the case, although, in the last few games his banged up wrist might have had something to do with it, plus Terry and barea have been ridiculously hot in th 4th quarter when he would be taking a lot more shots. I think Dirk is very unselfish, and rarely does he try to create something that isn't there. He knows he has teammates he can pass to who can make shots. I think you'll see later in the season, and especially in the playoffs that his attempts will probably be a little higher. But I don't think you'll ever see him at the 25 attempts a game that someone like Kobe would take
What are your impressions of Peja's play so far? I personally think he has been pretty good on defense in the zone, and he seems pretty comfortable with the offense already. He seems like he is a pretty cerebral player, and I think he is definitely gonna help this team. His shot hasn't been dropping yet, but I like where he is getting his shots. Thoughts?
I really like what I see. I know the shots will fall. he's way too good a shooter, But I have liked his rebounding and passing. they're better than I thought. Five assists last night. Five rebounds the game before vs Cleveland. He's just got to shake off the rust.
Hi Chuck, just look at the roster and besides Melo (or as you mention Prince, KMartin) we just need a banger, low post energy guy (Landry, Amundson) your thoughts!
I'm a Landry fan. Not sure what's happened in Sacramento, but I know he can play. Amundsen is a hustler. I'd rather have Cardinal. He's a hustler who can make a three pointer. Amundsen can't do that
Steve Nash? Grant Hill? Would this trade put us over the top? And would it be worth the possible future of Roddy B?
Hey Coop! I was fortunate enough to attend a road trip with the team and media one time. The Pheonix, Sac, Denver trip actually, and just wanted to give a shout out for Coach Ortegel. He made a very good impression on me during our trips to and the from the plane/hotel on the bus. He's extremely passionate and knowledgeable and he'll be missed a great deal. VERY BEST COACH O..! Take care to you too Coop..!
Bob is going to be missed by all of us. Personally, we've known each other for over 25 years back to when we were both doing college games in the Southwest Conference. I can't tell you how much basketball I have learned from him over that time. More importantly, we've become great friends away from basketball. As for the people who have watched him over the last 23 years, you can't imagine how much he appreciates you, and the chance you gave him to come into your homes every night. He can't thank you all individually. So I will do it collectively right here
Do you think the Mavs think Butler can make it back by the playoffs? If so, then I think the best thing to do would be to stand pat.
I don't know if he can, but he is rehabbing like a madman. He's on the road trip with the team and the players just love having him around. Would love to see the possibilities if he could make it back, but I just don't know. That was one serious injury he sustained. I think of Jameer Nelson for the Magic a few years ago when he hurt his shoulder, came back for the Finals against LA, but was NOT even close to the same player he was prior to the injury.
With Roddy coming back Jose will lose some minutes. Would he be trade bait? I do not think Nelson and Cuban know what they?re doing when it comes to making trades. Why the Mavs are not in the Melo, Paul, or D. Williams sweepstakes?
First off, CP3 and Williams are free agents after NEXT year. Their trade possibilities aren't even in play yet. They very much want to be in the Melo sweepstakes, even as a rental player. But Denver isn't going down that road right now. Hard to deal, if the other side isn't interested in you
Why does it seem like whenever the offense is struggling, in particularly Dirk, Rick depends on the 3-guard lineup to produce down the stretch? Great defensive teams will not let the 3-guard lineup, especially Barea, beat them in close games.
He hasn't used it all that much this season. Generally he has Marion on the floor., but if Marion isn't playing well (Like last night), he'll try something different. who knows, if Marion isn't playing well on a particular night and Peja is, then Peja might get the call. I don't think he's married to the three guard lineup as much as you think. Now if Roddy comes back and gets it going, If it's Kidd, Roddy and Terry, does it make any difference to you? I would hope not
I understand that we play teams with poor records a bit careless, which I guess is ok... However, when we have a back-to-back how come we don't go out blazing so we can reduce the minutes for the next game? I just am curious is this is given thought and discussed among the team.
I think they would love nothing more than to be able to do something like that, except as the great Parcells once said "You are who you are." And these guys just don't have it in them to blow anyone out. when your largest margin of victory all year is 16 points, I think you have your answer
Thanks for the note that I am not worth trading for Nash and Hill, but is there a realistic trade out there I would be worth moving for?
Do you see any trades happening before the trade deadline? The "window" seems to be closing with all the aging players. Your thoughts!
The window is just opening. Have you seen anyone else make a trade yet? Deadline is two weeks from today. Frankly, I can't wait for that day to come so that everyone can concetrate on what is, with the Mavericks, rather than , what will/should be, with the Mavericks
Why is there so much irrational hate for Barea? The guy can play, within his limitations.
I don't know what it is but the two man game isn't as fluent as it used to be. The person coming off Dirks pick goes to far off the pick and makes it where they cant even get a good pass to Dirk when hes wide open. Carlise needs to coach them up or something.
What game are you watching?
Do the Mavs NEED a trade to be considered for a championship this year, or can they compete with the roster they have now?
Clearly they can compete. the record demonstrates that. Do they need to make a trade for you to consider them contenders, or for the national media to do the same. I think they're ready to deal, but they're not going to do it for the sake of doing it. And if they don't, I think this group still has a great chance to be able to go as far as it wants.
Is ARCO arena the worst arena in the league? Place looked horrible last night on TV.
Used to be one of the best before the Kings went in the tank. It's the second oldest building in the league behind Madison Sq. Garden. When that building is full it could still be one of the loudest because there are so many seats so close to the floor, but because of its age, they don't have many of the accoutrements of the newer buildings.
I don't mean to be critical of Rick but I also think the 2-3 zone is a little bit over used as well. The Mavericks can't depend on a defense that doesn't put pressure on shooters on the perimeter, that's why many teams don't use it. As Avery preached a good man D is a great offense.
Nope. Avery preached that making a great offensive player work on defense, was the best way to defend him on offense. I would agree with you that there are times when they rely on it a bit too much, and I think that could be a little dangerous in the playoffs, when there is so much time to scout it and adjust to it. But in the winning streak, teams are shooting just 26.6 percent against it, and I would say that the mavericks can still use it more than anyone else because of the length they have at the back of it.
Why is Dirk shooting a low % because he isnt getting the shots he once did
We might have to ban you soon. I would say shooting 52 percnet from the floor and 41 from three isn't exactly a low percentage
I think if they could work out a trade with Indiana for one of their wings like Dunleavy, Rush or Posey that it would put the Mavs over the top!
More Mahinmi - Less Haywood ....Agree?
Depends on the team. Haywood gave them a nice boost last night. All depends on who you're playing against. And maybe it more depends on the Mavericks themselves as opposed to their opponents. when they're sleepwalking like they did vs Cleveland, then Mahinmi is your guy. But he is a bit foul prone, so until he learns to better control that, he'll probably be just a spot guy. But an effective one
Can the Mavs beat the Spurs in a seven game series?
Of course they can. Only once in the three meetings this season have the teams played each other at full strength. The Mavericks won that game
What do you think I should do Coop? I feel used, but I love the Rangers. They say Im getting older and declining a bit and want me to be a utility and DH, should I stay and rescind my trade request or go somewhere else?
Worked well for Paul Molitor. He's in the hall of Fame. I don't think you're a Hall guy, but it could work out for you just as well. You're not a very good fielder any more. I'm amazed someone in the National league is interested in you, quite frankly
They let a team that's won 12 games shoot 47% from the field and out rebound them also giving up a ridiculous amount of points in the paint. Total cause for concern for a tough game tonight on a back-to-back right?
Sac does that to everyone. They're second in the NBA in second chance points and 5th in Paint points.
Great 45 minutes today everyone. got to run to work on some Denver notes for the game tonight. Late starter (Thanks TNT). No local TV so the only local broadcast will be with Brad Davis and me starting around 9:45 with the pre game stuff all starting at 8:00 on 103.3 ESPN. Be back with you again Next Thursday. Take care
