Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Sportsnation. Thanks for stopping by. Lots of questions pouring in. "Gin, Phil".

CL (PA)

Your thoughts on the Lakers starting talks with the Nuggets about Melo.

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hot air.

watson (gainesville, fla)

the magic have to make a trade right? they need someone who can create their own shot. is kmart available with the rockets likely out of the playoffs? would mayo suffice? please give some good news thorpe!

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

They tried to get Martin, but didn't offer enough. JRich will have to do. Not sure what else they can do.

Terry (Madison)

Do you think there will be an NBA lockout?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I think it depends somewhat on what happens with the NFL. If they come to terms quickly, then it puts extra pressure on the NBA to do likewise, or they run a huge risk going forward. If the NFL stuff drags on, so too will the NBA I think.

Walt (Ellicott City, MD)

David, your note last week to your ?Main Man Max? touched my heart. My son is a Marine overseas and I couldn?t remember (sniff) the last time he called me ?daddy.? Man, those times went by in the blink of an eye. Anyway, please complete the newly formatted MVP ballot: If all the current players were put into a pool and you had the first pick to build your team, you would select:

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I suspect he'll stop with the daddy stuff soon enough. Thanks for raising your son to help protect us all. I'd go with LBJ #1.

Jacob (Eugene, oregon)

Is it possible that Blazers could try to get CP3 for a big trade, Oden, Miller and cash?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

No.

Steve (Indy)

Is there interest from other teams in Jeff Foster? He's been playing well and would add nice depth and rebounding to a playoff team.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Are you hoping to land Melo with that?

Matt M. (Santa Barbara)

Who is a better fit at SF for the Clippers from the available swingmen - T. Prince, J. Green, W. Chandler, C. Butler...does an acquisition from this group get them to the playoffs next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Chandler has become an intriguing guy. I like his fit out west.

Jerico (Philippines)

Hi Thorpester, you're a huge hit here in the PI, college coaches often mention your name. Quick Q = What are Lebron's chances of winning MVP? Is he your MVP? If not who is?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I think he's better than 50% chance to win. As of now.

Matt (ATL)

Thorpedo, i have a technical question and thought you'd be the best chatter to answer it. What's the difference between a pick and a screen? Thanks, love your articles & chats!

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

I actually started a new twitter account to answer basketball questions only-no NBA stuff. @askcoachthorpe. I'll spend an hour a week answering any technical questions, team or individual. Your answer is-there is none. It's the same thing.

scott (chicago)

I am interested in starting my own big/small camp locally, and wondered what the best way to get started was? I have a few friends and former coaches that were pretty prominant in the area when they played, should I get them involved? Do you recommend going to coaches camps held at local areas for ideas?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Send this to @askcoachthorpe.

Charlie (Bored at work)

The Flamingo Kid. Is the Bynum for Melo talk just to pump up other teams to provide a better offer? The Knicks offer is "gar-bage" don't you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Nice call. Very underrated movie. I don't believe that trade will happen.

Jammey (INDY)

Any insight to the Pacers new head coach?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Only that he seems a lot "nicer" than the old coach.

Briks (Philly)

How much are the Sixers going to regret Turner over Cousins? Center is clearly their biggest weak spot and Turner (while I still think he will be a good pro) replicates a lot of the skills Iguadala gives them. If they had Cousins, I would be extremely excited about their future.

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

At the very least, Sixers and Minny have to be kicking themselves.

Phil (Chicago)

David, true or false: Magic would be better if they never made the trades and just played Bass and Anderson instead of Lewis.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I'd bet that if given a chance, Otis Smith would not make any deals following their loss to LA. He "fixed" something that was working extremely well, and had room for improvement.

Phil (Charlotte)

Do the Grizzlies have a shot at landing Steve Nash? In my opinion that would be a great fit chemistry wise and they'd automatically be playoff bound maybe even capable of a first round upset. what's you take. Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

No shot.

Josh (Seattle)

Which point guard is better, Aaron Brooks or Kyle Lowry?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Lowry as a true lead guard, Brooks as a scorer.

Drew (Minny)

Why would Wolves help in Three team deal and give up Brew (v good defender) and first to get back Curry and Randolph (we already have Tolliver who is better)? Makes no sense as reported.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Agreed. Makes no sense as reported.

Matt (Sandusky, OH)

What is undefeated Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger's potential at the next level in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Elton Brand, who's reminding us how good he can be.

Terry (Madison)

Are you excited for the dunk contest? I can't wait to see what Blake can pull off.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Have not watched it since Larry Nance.

Phil (Charlotte)

Hey David! Do you think Haslem's return is going to take the Heat to the next level or is their improvement solely resting on the big three's chemistry? Thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, I think he will make the team better. How much better remains to be seen.

Terry (Madison)

Why won't the Suns trade Nash? He deserves a chance at winning a title.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

He does not want to be traded.

Scott (Boston, MA)

What do you make of all the recent chatter about Kevin Garnett's on-court antics? Do you think his recent reputation is warranted?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Yes, he chooses to act like this.

Scott (Irvington, NY)

I haven't read much from you lately on John Wall. He does not seem to be quite the same players since his spell of injuries. What are you thoughts on how he is progressing?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

He's the feature for my rookie report tomorrow.

adam (idaho)

pau gasol and shannon brown for dwight howard, who says no?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Orlando, unless they know D12 does not want to come back.

Brian (Seattle)

If 'Melo gets traded and Nene really wants out, would he make sense for the Thunder for Jeff Green? Would Serge Ibaka and Nene be able to play together effectively?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Houston is the likely landing spot for Nene if Denver sells it's parts. They have the picks and young talent to trump any likely OKC offer.

Jimmer (BYU)

Hi David.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Jimmer.

Ludo (Paris)

Hi Mr Thorpe, Out of the few french C/PF currently under contracts, is there any of them that could become a steady player? only Turiaf seems to have managed to find a niche for himself. Also will Diaw ever fulfill his potential?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I nodded my head as I wrote that.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Seraphin bears watching. I like Batum a lot. Diaw is long past his peak.

Eric (New York, NY)

Thorpezilla! I just want to go on record as being mega-grateful for how chock-full of talent the NBA is these days. I've been watching since I was a kid and this is the most exciting era - Clippers-Wolves is a watchable game! We are super lucky!

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

We all need to be more like Eric. Finding joy in life always good.

J (Toms River, NJ)

Do you see the Bulls taking down the C's and Heat in the East? If I had to pick the east finals today, I'd take Bulls/Celtics. I need to see Miller and Haslem at full strength before I give the Heat a shot...

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

As of today, I'm leaning to Bulls as my east pick. I think Noah will re-energize them after the break.

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

But they need an answer at 2.

J (Toms River, NJ)

Who would you rather have for the rest of their careers Greg Oden, Yao Ming, or Tracy Mcgrady?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Oden.

Tim (Jacksonville)

Thorpe, I saw Donald Trump on Oprah yesterday answer a cool question. What is the word or phrase that best defines your family? He said loyalty, and one of his sons said friendship. What would you say, and what's best for a team?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Love, and love. There is nothing that can compare.

Rik (Fresno)

Hibbert, Paul George and Jeff Foster's expiring for Kevin Martin. Pacers can use their remaining cap on one of the many quality free agent centers this summer, and Houston gets young talent. Who says no?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Houston. Martin has 30 in three of last 4, 3 wins and an OT loss in LA. They need a rebounder/shot blocker, not a passing big.

Rik (Fresno)

Paul George's upside = Rudy Gay. Agree or disagree?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Disagree.

Seth (Baltimore)

Coach,Is it me or does John Henson remind you of a young (Pistons version) of Dennis Rodman? Wiry, always does the dirty work...etc. Thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

It's just you. He's very different than Rodman.

mendel (fl)

Wait did u just say your taking the Bulls over the heat? Clearly their defense is not that good, and even with Noah coming back your telling me they can stop wade/lbj/ and bosh?!!!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I wrote that I'm leaning in that direction, with an upgrade at 2. I think they will be extremely tough to score on if healthy.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

Batum called D Rose a great offensive player who can't play defense after last nights game. I thought Rose made great strides to get better on D, though he's still probably average or a little above average. Is that a fair assesment or is Batum right?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I see Rose as average, at best, right now. Which is fine. It's a team game anyway.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Chances of Nets coming back inot play for Melo?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Strong.

edizz1e (Queens, NY)

Why is LaMarcus Aldridge crying about being snubbed? Steve Nash is the one who got snubbed, he's averaging 50-40-90!!

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

The west is LOADED. Lots of potential candidates.

tom (new york)

C brewer to the bulls? Why not?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

He's more of a 3, and they have Deng.

Brandon (NYC)

Kevin Love just tied KG's 37 consecutive double double record, is he a product of being the only player on a bad team or is his all around game really coming into form? Could he evolve into a Dirk type player and be able to be the star on a championship caliber team?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

He's the product of being super freakin good.

Chris Mikesell (Kansas)

What about the pistons trying to send Hamilton to Utah for Ak-47. Utah really needs a 2 like hamilton.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

I like it, if they can get more than AK.

Thomas (Utah)

I know that Paul Pierce likes to go right and Dwyane Wade likes to do that dumb pump fake then jump into the defender. So why do players who's job it is to know tendencies not know that? Or is it just extremely hard to remember all that stuff at game speed?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Yes, plus great players are great at selling one move before going to their best stuff.

Pete Sampson (Pittsburgh,PA)

Are their any former NBA players that are serious and determined about making a comeback one day?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Karl Malone, right?

Joe S. (New York City)

Aren't the odds of Carmelo not signing the extension and taking a chance on new free agent militations like zero percent? The Nuggets should just wait him out. No way he takes a chance on losing tens of millions. You agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Why would they want to overpay for a player who is only staying for the money? That has disaster all over it.

Zeke (Charlotte)

I've always had a hard time understanding why teams with top 5 picks go after "upside" rather than current production. Wouldn't it be safer to pick a guaranteed producer (Sullinger) rather than hope an "upside" guy reaches his potential (Perry Jones)?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Depends. Floors have to be considered along with ceilings.

Chris (Mass)

Whats your thoughts on Brandon Roy coming back so soon? Before there was a chance he wouldnt be back this season and now he is coming before the All Star Break. What do you seem him doing?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Dang it Chris, I'm not a doctor!

Matt Josephs (NY)

How many years will it take for the Cavs to emerge again as a half decent team?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Three.

Beverly (New York)

I was watching a game with my boyfriend and asked him if all the team owners high-five players after a game like the Mavericks owner. He said to ask you. So I am.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Very rarely, and never like Cuban. He's an original, and it works great in Dallas.

Peter (Seattle)

Ignore trade rules - Chuck Hayes for Ibaka, who says no?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

OKC.

Steve (St. John's, NL)

Let's talk Raps for a sec. Playing terribly, but some of their younger guys give me hope for the future. Am I deluded?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

No, DD and Davis have a chance to be very good.

BJ (Indiana)

Any comments on the Superbowl?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Zzzzzzz. Kidding. I watched the first half with my family because my son wanted to watch. Then, because I love my wife, we watched "Four Weddings and a Funeral", which ended in time for me to see the last Packers drive. So a great night overall.

Josh (Chicago, IL)

Hey David, what do you think about Earl Clark's ceiling, and what can he do for the Magic this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

He could be Lamar Odom. And under SVG he may get there.

Joe (Dallas)

Hi David - Which current players are most frustrating for not putting in the necessary work to live up to their potential?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Darko in a landslide.

DJ (California)

How good can Blake Griffin become? I think he has some legitimate game in his repertoire.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

MVP good.

Kings fan (sacramento)

The Kings are staying competetive. They're losing games by less than 5 points. Should I atl east be happy about that?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Has it gotten that bad that just not getting blown out is good enough? Relax, another top 5 pick is coming.

Damon (Santa Cruz)

Do you think Griffin's name - at the end of his career - will be spoken in the same breath as Karl Malone's?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

No.

dc (dc)

Is Blatche too much of a bonehead to make it work? He's sooo talented, but spends a lot of his time throwing the ball out of bounds or turning it over trying to go 1-on-3.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

I just don't think be cares.

Sqweek (Utah)

Do you think D-will is going to stick around in Utah after 2011-2012?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

No.

Ryan (Grand Rapids)

Who has the most potential Monroe, Daye, Jerebko?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Monroe.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Player with most range? JR Smith?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Probably. Maybe JJ.

Slug (Hartford)

Who has the best uni's in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I like Magic's back pinstripes.

Robert (Cleveland)

I read a previous chat referencing Kevin Martin's work ethic and I loved to see someone so determined to improve. Did Kevin seek you out when you initially started working with him, or did you see some areas you could help Kevin with and contact him?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

His college coach sent him to me after his frosh year, where he strictly made perimeter shots. He hit for 46 his first game as a soph, and the rest is history.

Ed (UK)

Four weddings and a Funeral. Great English movie! Have you visited England?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

No, but my wife did last July. She loved it.

edizz1e (Queens, NY)

Is Eddy Curry's NBA career over after his contract expires this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I would think so.

Mike (Iowa City)

will LBJ ever go to the NFL? He would be dominant in every skill position!

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

No, but he would be a beast as a DE or OT.

Dan (Seattle, WA)

Which NBA big finishes the best with his weak hand?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Boozer or Lee.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Nene dunks best with it.

vk (dc)

Um. Most OTs outweigh LBJ by 100 lbs.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Um, LBJ could easily weigh 315.

Jerry (Sac)

A Sac Bee columist was mentioning last season that Tyreke Evans was getting special treatment with regards to practices and such; creating barrier with other team members (some asking and getting traded). Don't you think that type of environement would be a nagative things for Cousins to be around?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Nocioni was quoted the other day talking about how bad things were out there. Maybe things are changing now. Cousins is doing ok.

Jordan [via mobile]

D-will, memo and fes to NY for Felton, fields, Randolph, and Chandler. What do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

At first glance, I like it. Utah is the one team that can win without stars.

Charlie (Alaska)

Is Jonny Flynn improving? Or are his stats misleading?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I am totally unimpressed. He is really struggling.

Lior (Israel)

who could be Miami future PG?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

R-U-B-I-O.

Dan (Seattle, WA)

Thoughts on Harrison Barnes? Does he really have the talent he was hyped to have? Clearly mentally he's not there yet

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Chad Ford has an update today. Barnes is coming on!!

Aaron (Chicago)

Bucher thinks the Bulls acquiring JR Smith or OJ Mayo would totally screw up what they have going. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

I disagree.

John (Indiana)

Is Hayward ever going to make it?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

I'd guess yes, but it's not a sure thing by any means. He's really really weak, which can be fixed.

mike (Iowa City)

Deng, Brewer, Taj for Tyreke Evans and casspi

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Ugh.

Shad (Chicago)

are the bulls finally wearing down?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I think so, which is why after the break, with Noah's return, they'll be a new team.

mike (Iowa City)

why ugh?? D rose and Evans both from Coach Cal....could rule the NBA

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Double ugh.

Ken (Minny)

What do the Heat have that could get them Rubio's rights?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I have no idea how that could happen. But I hope it does.

Sachikevious (Greece)

Can Steph Curry become an All-Star?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Yes.

Dan (Seattle, WA)

Casspi anywhere would be a nice addition though...

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Yes, once he stops kicking his right leg forward on his perimeter shot.

Sean (New Lenox, IL)

As a Bulls fan I second your double ugh.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

You and the rest of Bulls nation.

Greg (LA)

Cousins - more like Kemp at his best or Coleman at his worst?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I think he can be better than both.

Rick (Toronto)

Thoughts on Amir Johnsons improved play of late?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

I watched him the other day. Impressive. He's still a young guy, amazingly enough.

mike (Iowa City)

Can you explain the Ugh? and why it would be a bad move?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Rose is the best one on one dribble drive player in the world. Evans likes to dribble a lot too. It's a bad combo.

Ben (Ottawa)

Does portland hang on to number 8 spot?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

A lot depends on if Houston can trade for a legit 5.

Jordan [via mobile]

Does Jerry Sloan really want to come back next year? I wouldn't.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I have my doubts. They are the worst 1st qtr team in the league. That's on the coach.

Scott S (Lake Zurich)

Noah is ridiculously underrated. He is easily a top five center. People forget they went 0-10 when he sat with injury last year. He is the HEART of this team, and will anchor an ALREADY top defensive system (with Boozer in it). Chicago looks like a dark horse.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Agreed.

Brian (NJ)

Better one on one dribble driver: Wade or Rose? Those are the two best right?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I meant Rose is best as a pg. I'd rank him even with Wade overall.

CC (Atlanta)

You like Noah over Horford? Surely not.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Depends on who else is on the team. It's very very close.

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Time's up for me. Thanks everyone. Have a great week. Be safe.
