Chat with Chuck Cooperstein

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:02 PM)

Greetings from the Valley of the Sun where it's beautiful outside. Mavericks are winning. Roddy is back. The lead over the Lakers is up to two, and wouldn't it be wild if somehow the Lakers fell to fourth behind OKC... This kind of weather will get you dreaming

Tucker (St Louis)

Looking forward what makes the Mavs better defensively... Stevenson guarding playing 2 to guard tough wings or Roddy to guard the Tony Parker, Monta Ellis type players??

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:03 PM)

Both

G (Dallas)

On defense, how does Roddy B compare with Jet and Stevenson?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:05 PM)

Not nearly as physical as Stevenson. Cant' match him up against the taller and/or thicker SG's. Similar to Terry, but because he's played so little, still has to learn how to play within the framework of the team concept. He has the quickness and the length with his arms to be really good, once he figures out that part

Javier (Dallas)

Nice win last night, JJ-Roddy outstanding combo... think we are another scorer (or Roddy can kept the paste) plus a low post energy guy (Landry) what about Dominique (like him but no pt left), Cardinal x Landry? Tanks

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:05 PM)

No thanks

Rob C (Alabama)

Hi Chuck, Do you think the mavericks should entertain the idea of being part of a Melo trade? Meaning should they consider giving up a 1st round pick for Anthony Randolph? I haven't heard anyone mention this possibility, but he's not very expensive (owed 2 mill for next season) and a possible young asset for a likely very late 1st rounder. What do you think?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:08 PM)

I'm in favor of adding Melo, and that's an interesting way to add another asset to any potential deal. I just don't think it's going to happen, no matter what the Mavericks try. Melo has his heart set on NY. The Nets are apparently back in and they have the one player Denver wants more than any other (Derrick Favors). I'd be blown away if it happened down here.

G (Dallas)

What exactly does Gary Boren- FT coach of Dallas do? Or better yet, what is he doing with Haywood?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:10 PM)

Mavericks have led the league in FT shooting five times since Boren has been there and always among the league elites. He has worked with Haywood, and Haywood has improved since the start of the season. It's still a train wreck, but at least from a mechanical standpoint the shot looks better. Now if he (or anyone) can just get inside Wood's head...

Josh (Chicago, IL)

Has there been any talk about getting Carl Landry via trade? He seems like he'd be a perfect fit coming off the bench and he's an expiring contract for Cuban.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:11 PM)

Only among the media. Who would you rather have as your backup 4? Marion or Landry? Give me Trix

Kevin (Jax, FL)

Hey Chuck.. With Roddy B back and JJ & Kidd seaming to be catching fire, the possibility of Caron Butler coming back for the playoffs.. Do you think this may be our year? And what are the chances they pull off a trade before the deadline?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:14 PM)

Hold your horses on Butler. He's talking a great game, and no one can ever question his toughness or willingness. But I'll be stunned if he's back, and especially if the Mavericks are playing well. Remember the Jameer Nelson matter in Orlando two years ago. Hurt in mid-season on his way to an All-Star year, Was able to get back for the Finals, and was just awful. Not saying Butler would be awful, but if you've got it rolling at the most important time of the year, I don't see the reason to try to mess with anything. Chances of a trade? I'd say less than 20 percent

Adam (Lewisville)

High hopes = high results; I know some of us don't want to put too much pressure on Roddy, which is good. However, higher expectations generally lead to high outcomes. It's psychology but I think we should continue to expect from Roddy and he will continue to prove he is whatever wants and expects. Your thoughts?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:16 PM)

Don't agree with your premise. Some people can handle it. Others can't. Roddy seems to be someone who can handle it because he simply plays, and doesn't worry about anything else

Sandro (Tennessee)

Do you think Peja still has it?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:17 PM)

The last two games sure tell me he's got something left. Playing with this group of players, he's going to get all the great looks he could ever ask for, and if he gets those looks, he's going to make more than his fair share

Rob C (Alabama)

I didn't mean try to get Melo, I mean't forget about Melo and just get Randolf for the 1st rounder. let someone else gut their roster!

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:20 PM)

Nope. I've never been a Randolph guy. He's the typical NBA draft choice whose upside was trumpeted more than his ability to play. Know he's young. But he's thin, and has never shown any real ability other than to jump very high. The mavericks had that player a few years ago. His name was Gerald Green. If Randolph can't crack the rotation of a team who's an athletic player's dream, why would he do anything at a place where the system is far more structured?

Carlos (Dallas)

Do think Cuban is going to try and lure Dwight to Dallas?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:21 PM)

He'd better be signing Tyson Chandler first

janayia (texas)

do you think Derrick Rose is capable of getting MVP

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:23 PM)

I do. It's amazing what the Bulls have done not having both Boozer and Noah for such long stretches. He has elevated himself. Although I don't think there's any question in my mind that LeBron is the MVP. He's off the charts great (Except when he plays Dallas)

Jordan (Memphis)

Will the Heat ever beat the celtics

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:26 PM)

Maybe in the occasional game. Certainly not in a seven game series. It's still about size, Boston has a ton of it. Miami has precious little of it

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Dallas Mavericks Players has ever won Rookie of the Year?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:29 PM)

Jason Kidd in 1995 was the only one

Rob (Cleveland)

I'm excited for the Mavs this year (because I think they can win) which is actually the reason for the following concern. Do you think they will be in a rebuilding phase after Dirk in a few years?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:31 PM)

There is no question they will be. With the exception of Roddy, Barea, Mahinmi and Jones, there are no players on the team who have played fewer than nine seasons. And who knows if those players will be here. Unless, they find themselves another true star it's unavoidable

tyler (dallas)

Do you see the West as somewhat weaker than in years past? Seems like there are less threats along the way for the Mavs to run the gauntlet

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:34 PM)

The West is weaker this year, no doubt. There aren't any teams like last year's OKC team that won 50, but could do no better than an eight seed. But it is about the matchup, and I could see Denver (With Carmelo) giving the Mavericks a run in the first round. The Mavericks haven't won in New Orleans since the Stone Age, and Memphis has the type of size (If not depth) that could give them problems. Got to play the games, regardless of who they're against

Baba plano,tx [via mobile]

Do u think j.kidd should come of the bench to get ready for the playoffs

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:35 PM)

You are kidding me, right?

Mike (NY)

Do you think the Suns should trade Vince Carter?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:36 PM)

What could they get for him at this point? He's been brutal. last five games 7.8 poins 33.3 FG 1-13 three point shooting. OUCH

Anthony (Atlanta)

Will the Spurs be the team to take the Mavericks out this playoffs?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:36 PM)

If the Mavericks lose in the WC playoffs, I would expect it would be the Spurs that beat them

Taylor (Nashville)

Will the Mavs give Roddy starting minutes this season (25-30mpg) in your opinion? Is he a good fantasy option and what do they really hope for out of Roddy this season?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:37 PM)

They hope for Roddy to give them exactly what he gave them last night vs Sacramento. Every night. Not on the occasional night like last year

Aaron (DFW)

Hey Chuck! I know there's been a lot of Roddy questions, but wanted to see if you could answer just one more. It's only been one game, but did you notice anything different in his understanding of the plays or court vision as opposed to a year ago?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:41 PM)

The six assists might have been the best part of the game for him, and the way he and Kidd worked together in that huge run in the 3rd quarter was great. He knew where JKidd was going to be and got him the ball in the right spot. That was the most encouraging thing of all. As an aside, have you noticed that Kidd's three point shooting has returned to his levels of last year? Over 47 percent in the last 11 games

Joshua (nashville)

do you think lebron is one of the top if not the best player in the league

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:41 PM)

Yes I do.

Taylor (Nashville)

So is around 20mpg Roddy's cap you think?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:42 PM)

Not dealing in Fantasy Answers. Three things in the world we don't talk about: High School Sports, Fantasy Sports and Pro Wrestling

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:44 PM)

Given how well everyone is playing right now, it's hard to for me to figure out the minutes. Rick Carlisle probably has though, and that's why he's coaching this team and I'm chatting with you

Aaron (DFW)

Thanks for the answer. In regards to Kidd's 3-point touch returning to last year's form, I saw one of his quotes saying something along the lines of Dirk and Roddy getting him the ball last night in his NEW position? Is he going to play much more off the ball now with Roddy bringing it up?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:46 PM)

Not a whole lot more. He's played off the ball with Barea, and as JJ's game has picked up of late so has Kidd's shooting. Same principle with Roddy. As long as you have that drive element in play, defenses have to respect it. If they do, that gives those three point shooters all the room they need

Jordan Gaines (Memphis)

When Brandon Roy comes back. do you think the Trailblazers are a playoff contender

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:47 PM)

They're one right now I'd have to say with six straight wins. Fifth in the West this morning. Getting Camby back too won't hurt

Chuck Cooperstein
  (1:51 PM)

That's it for today. Last game in the NBA before the All Star Break is the Mavericks and Suns in Phoenix. Here's a nice little fact. Mavs are 7-4 in second of back to backs. Phoenix is only 6-8 against teams who are playing the second of a BTB. 9:45 tip, or whenever TNT says it is. Brad Davis joins me on 103.3 ESPN for the call. Hope you'll stay up late with us, and we'll visit again next week
