Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Hey Sportsnation! Hope everyone had a great Valentines Day yesterday. I did, it was my 24th with the same Valentine. I'm a lucky boy. On to the questions."We created the missionary position. You're welcome".

Matt ("Work")

How good really is K.Love? A product of a crappy team or a budding superstar?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

He's a superstar.

Thomas (Omaha)

Hey David, love your work. A friend of mine said he saw a pic of you on Facebook reading Bill Simmons latest book? As an expert, how did it read?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I'm 25% done, and I think it's hysterical and extremely interesting. It's obvious he loves the NBA so much. His chapter on how he ended up being such a Celtics fan is excellent-what a great opportunity he had to be that close to Bird during those magical years.

Nick (OB)

What is your opinoin on NBA video games like 2k11?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I have not played a video game since the Legend of Zelda in 1990. Other than the occasional Mario Cart with my kids.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Or is it Kart?

Dan (Miami Beach)

Your thoughts on long-time NBA coach Jerry Sloan's abrupt departure, please

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I saw him in person recently, and he seemed so irritable and unhappy.

Peter (DC)

With the fastest point guard in the league, how come the Bulls are such a terrible fast-break team? Will they make a move on their roster to address this?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Rose isn't the fastest guy with the ball, and he's better in the halfcourt actually. They don't have racer wings except for Brewer.

John Liberty Kimberly IV (Dallas)

David, Is it realistic to expect Roddy B to start contributing right away upon his return this week? I know MJ broke his foot in his second season and came back to play relatively well in the playoffs, but that isn't really a fair comparison.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

You are right. It's not likely he'll be good right away.

Dan (Miami Beach)

Coach - In a championship NBA series between a two all-star team, and a team with 9 guys who hustle and play defense, have high basketball IQs and pass to the open man, who wins? Star power sells seats, but please, somebody bring back team basketball.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I'll take the all-star team please.

Ryan (Houston)

Hey David, are the Spurs legitimate title contenders?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Absolutely.

Ronnie (Wyoming)

Can Jordan Taylor from the University of Wisconsin be an NBA talent?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I watched the game against OSU. He has a chance.

Steve (LA)

Honestly coach, I hate that you are right so often, especially when your talking about my Clippers. You have been hitting on Aminu's love affair with the 3 ball since October, when he was making a bunch. I thought you were just a hater, but now he just sucks. Is there any hope?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

There is. He needs to compete harder.

Tracy (North Branch, MN )

David- What are your thoughts on the potential of Anthony Randolph? It seems like the T-Wolves are salivating to get this guy from the Knicks.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I still like him. He needs to play!

tom (chicago)

What are the chances of Kyrie Irving going #1 in the draft? It seems ultra athletic on ball guards are the real difference makers. Better choice than Kemba Walker, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Depends on who's drafting. But he has a real shot.

Dale (NYC)

Coach, I know you took your wife up here for Valentines Day last year. Hope you made it up here again yesterday. Are the Knicks better off getting Melo?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

We spent a long weekend at a great spa in San Antonio. We missed being in NY though. Yes, Melo can be a difference maker if properly motivated. I'm guessing he would be.

Jeff (Huntsville)

Will there still be a draft if the NBA has a labor lockout after the season?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Yes. The draft comes first.

Jean (Oklahoma)

Are the Wizards better off keeping Hinrich for what he contributes on the floor or trading him for a pick and whatever garbage comes back to match salaries?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Kirk helps them win games now. Draft pick helps later. I'd focus on the future.

Javier (Austin)

David, how was the mexican food in San Antonio?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Top notch.

Damon (Santa Cruz)

Coach, your thoughts please on Jerry Sloan's legacy? The NBA is surely poorer to not have him prowling the sidelines anymore.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

His legacy is strong. Definitely HOF. But NBA is better off with coaches who are happy.

Brian (Providence)

Die-Hard Laker fan here, but if they lose on the road tomorrow, I may seriously consider switching allegances

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

So "Die Hard" is just a relative term.

Joe (Chciago)

How is a mid 40s% PF who neither dominates offensively or defensively, while he's helped his team have the 2nd worst record in the entire NBA, a superstar?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Best rebounder in league, and best rebounder shooter maybe ever.

ross (Woodclifflake, NJ)

at this point in the season would you agree the celtics are the clear pick to come out of the east?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

No, not clear. Slight favorite. Playoffs still a long way away.

Adam (Indiana)

Recent rumors have been floating around about Steve Nash getting traded to Minnesota. Is there any truth to it?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I'd guess no.

Bill (Atlanta)

Coach, your @askcoachthorpe account on twitter is a great reference tool for me. Thanks. I'm coaching my son's 10 a under AAU team, what should be my practice breakdown?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Thanks. Lots of ballhandling, passing and catching while moving, and layups. Plus defense.

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

@askcoachthorpe is meant for basketball questions that are not NBA related. @coachthorpe is NBA or college stuff.

spencer (memphis)

Talladega Nights! Hilarious! Do you think Thabeet can EVER turn into a decent basketball player or should the Grizz just jettison every memory of this botched #2 pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Ever is a long time. He has a shot.

jason (chicago)

Does a healthy bulls team (minus an upgrade at the 2) have a legitimate shot at beating the Heat in a 7 game series?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Yes, because of the way they defend.

Damon (Santa Cruz)

If you could have worked with any NBA player in history, who would you most want to have coached?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Magic. I could have learned a lot from him.

The Bossman (Facebook friend)

Happy birthday Coach T. Any big plans tomorrow?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Thanks!! Nothing special. Just hope it's one of many more.

greg (tampa)

Best restaraunt in Clearwater? Everytime I cross the bridge for food I am dissappointed food wise at least

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Mystic Fish, Carmel Cafe, The Living Room, all excellent.

Tom (Chi)

Taj Gibson and the Charlotte #1 Pick for OJ Mayo... Who says no first?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Could work.

Dave (Hoboken, NJ)

About 3 yrs ago I asked you "I may be crazy but I think Z.Randolph and J Crawford for R.Lewis would be good for both teams." You responded "You're crazy". Now I think it would have been a steal for Orlando and an albatross for the Knicks.. your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Magic need 4's who can space the floor.

John (St. Paul, MN)

Loved your write-up on Patric Young, I've been watching him all year- is he the athletic big-man the Wolves need?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Thank you. He's a few years away from helping a team, except for spot mins.

edizz1e (Queens, NY)

If Dwyane Wade's career ended tomorrow, would he be in the Hall of Fame?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

My guess is probably.

Joe (DC)

"Best rebounder in league, and best rebounder shooter maybe ever" you said. People also talk about Dirk being the best big shooter ever. Does Larry Bird not figure into these calculations?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

I'm talking about prolific rebounders who can shoot.

Stewart (Phila.)

David, even though the sixers are currently a sub .500 team, doesn't Doug Collins have to be included in coach of the year conversation?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Not yet, but he's trending that way.

CJ (Iowa)

Why isnt Micheal Beasley playing like he was ment to play

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

He often does not play with passion, and rarely plays with purpose.

Dave (Twin Cities)

Cousins: I keep hearing he's really a problem. Would you have drafted him, given what we keep seeing?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

#2 or

Dan (MN)

Kevin Love or Kevin Garnett, right now, who's on your team?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

To win a playoff series, KG. To build a team, KL.

jose (lakeland)

Do you see the Spurs resting their big three in the future again with the big lead they have?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Yes.

Joel (Ind)

The Pacers and 76ers are trending upward could one of them or maybe both of them pass the knicks in the playoff race?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Absolutely.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Absolutely.

john (manila)

i like epke udoh, doh youh? with starters minutes, he could easily outproduce biedrins!!

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Yes, I think he's coming along nicely.

Ryan (Chicago)

Has Duncan really lost a step or is he just pacing himself this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

A little of both. He know what he is doing.

Dave (philly)

Do you think Evan Turner should change his shooting form once the season is over?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I'd tweak it, yes.

rob (houston)

you'd take a team w/ 2 all stars over a complete team that plays team ball, makes the open passes, and plays with a purpose?did i read that right?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I thought he wrote "all" all stars. But why does a team with 2 all-stars have to be a selfish team?

jay (pittsburgh)

man the sixers r looking good and holiday was amazing vs spurs wat 3 thing do you like about his game

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Big and strong for his position. Shoots it well, and defends well. Manages the game too.

edizz1e (Queens, NY)

Is Rashad McCants that much of a headache that he can't find a spot on a bad team?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Yes.

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Yes.

Joe (NY)

Who taught you most of what you know about basketball?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

The list is too long.

Marty (Dallas, TX)

Can you fathom why there is such irrational dislike for J. J. Barea down here in Mavs Land? The guy can play, but people here act like he is not even good enough to ride the bench in Cleveland.

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I love that guy. He's someone the whole league values.

Ray (San Antonio)

If you could move Cousins to a team like the Spurs or another team with an established coach and team identity wouldn't he flourish?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I think he would, yes.

Joseph Steckmann (Portland, OR)

Watching the Minnesota vs. Portland game last night I noticed that K Love didn't even get his double double until there was about a minute and a half left in the game, down by more than ten. He plays against second stringers most games because they're down so much, doesn't that take away at least something from his "amazing" numbers?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Minny is not getting blown out "most" games.

Eric (Chicago)

Korver, Mike Miller or Redick...which one would you want to take a 3 at the end of the game?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I'm good with all 3.

Josh (Ottawa Ontario)

Hey David, I was fortunate enough to catch the Blake Show in Toronto on Sunday. For anyone who hasn't seen it in person, you need to ASAP!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I have on a few occasions. Great stuff.

Adnan (Chicago)

Who should get the bulk of minutes in Phoenix: Gortat or Lopez?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Gortat.

Briks (Philly)

How bout all time shooting that 3: Bird, Dirk, Allen, Miller, Nash?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I'd probably list Nash 1.

Howard (NJ)

David, come on chief how about Melo? Biggest story right now. In your opinion is he going to the Knicks?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

My latest feel is he stays in Denver, for now.

Jordan (NYC)

Mozgov = Legit NBA center?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Probably not.

Peter (Tarzana, CA)

Who's the best 12th man in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Right now I'd lean to Boston.

Peter (Tarzana, CA)

Do you see Laker rookies Caracter or Ebanks becoming solid contributors in the coming years?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I think both have a chance.

Craig (San Antonio)

Can players get over hamstring injuries in a couple of weeks? I'm worried for Tiago.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

They can, depends on the severity of the injury.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

Funner series to watch come playoff time, Bulls vs Celtics or Heat vs Celtics?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Holy cow, both would be amazing.

Matt (New York)

What non-NBA reading do you enjoy?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Mostly non-fiction stuff, ranging from politics and history to sports or culture.

Brian (Providence)

Any chance the West DOESN'T come down to Spurs vs. Lakers (again)?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Ask me after the trade deadline.

Mo (Chicago)

Did we see some legitimate animosity during that Heat - C's game with the shove on KG by Wade? I've missed that!

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I was thinking the same thing. The All-Star game will be interesting in that regard.

Robert (Los Angeles)

Trade Nash - yes or no?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Yes, if he's ok with it.

Chris (Columbus)

Watching OSU Sullinger's game, I'm very impressed with his shotting form. Everybody sees him as more of a power forward that is a bruiser but I think he could turn into a strech 4... Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Why would you want that body to be outside of the paint?

Chris (OKC)

Does Ibaka deserve to start now?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

It's not about deserving. It's about overall fit.

Aaron (Seattle)

Kaman, Aminu and a first for DWill? Who says "no"?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Utah.

Damon (Santa Cruz)

If the Jazz traded AK for Rip/Prince, would that vault Utah into contender status?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

No, one step below that, which would be a step up for them now.

Aaron (Richmond, VA)

Looks like Zabian Dowdell is getting some playing time with the Suns... You worked with him a while back. Do you think he sticks in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Yes. He's an NBA pg for sure.

edizz1e (Queens, NY)

You said Rose isn't the fastest point guard in the league, I'm assuming you have Wall or Rondo as the fastest?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Or Collison.

Bob (Hawaii )

Is Rubio worth the fuss? When's he coming?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Not as he's presently playing. But I think he'll bounce back in an NBA uniform in the right system.

Jay (Akron)

Your colleague Chad Ford seems so convinced that Perry Jones is a legit prospect for #1. Why? Doesn't seem to do anything exceptionally or help his team win. No way Cavs take him over Irving, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Rudy Gay had the same knock. He's excellent now.

JasonD (TN)

Will Earl Clark ever get a chance at some real minutes in Orlando with Bass and Anderson there?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I think he will. Next year.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Sorry everyone, I have to get going. Thanks for all the questions. Be safe!
