Chat with Chad Ford

Chad Ford
  (1:02 PM)

Aloha everyone, thanks for coming to the chat today. What should we talk about ...? Let's roll.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

A bonanza of deals the last 3-4 days Chad. What do you think about the Nets trading for DWill?

Chad Ford
  (1:05 PM)

Think it was a GREAT move. Some argue he's the best point guard in the league and everyone agrees he's one of the top 3. He's young. Elite PGs are almost impossible to get via trade or free agency. He'll have a bigger impact in NJ than Melo would have. I know that Donnie Walsh preferred Williams to Melo. The Nets got the better deal.

Jake (Jersey)

Will the Nets be able to extend Williams

Chad Ford
  (1:07 PM)

Not until this summer. However after that who knows. If Williams doesn't sign an extension, he can opt out in 2012 and be a free agent. There will be a lot of interest, but Nets will have his Bird Rights and under any new CBA deal, they'll have the advantage.

Tom (NJ)

DWill was concerned with Utah not resigning Boozer and letting Brewer go, you think when he get to Jersey and see's Prokorov's commitment to winning he will eventually sign? If nothing else the Nets will spend money.

Chad Ford
  (1:09 PM)

True. They also have a young center in Brook Lopez. But they are a little stuck after that. They wasted a lot of money this summer on role players like Travis Outlaw, Johan Petro and Anthony Morrow. They won't have max cap space in 2012 to add another star unless they are able to move some players next year. So their path toward getting much better is still a little unclear.

Stephen Howard (Columbus, Ohio)

How good can the Nets be next season. 42-40 or better?

Chad Ford
  (1:10 PM)

I think somewhere between 44-48 wins with the current roster. Maybe a little more.

Sean ( Park City)

Chad, you have to admit this was a good & bold move by the Jazz. They have now avoided the same debacle that plagued Denver this year

Chad Ford
  (1:12 PM)

I agree. I've always admired Kevin O'Connor. He knows what he wants and hates to play games. About a month ago he saw the writing on the wall and decided to be proactive. They didn't get equal value for Williams, but I like what they received in return. I doubt he could've gotten much better than this. I still don't understand why the Nuggets turned down this offer from the Nets- for Melo -but I bet the Nets are happy today that they did.

Matt (Utah)

I've heard that with the 2 draft picks Utah got and with the looming lockout. That the Jazz could get 2 early 1st round picks from this trade. How will the lockout effect the newly acquired picks, pair that up with Harris and Favors and the possiblity Dwill would have left anyways. This doesn't look so bad.

Chad Ford
  (1:17 PM)

Jazz get an unprotected pick from the Nets for the 2011 draft and they get the Warriors 2012 pick (which is protected 1-7). Given that the Nets have 17 wins ... even if they go on a tear with DWill, this is a lottery pick. Most likely a Top 10 pick. If Jazz slide out of playoff race in West, they'll have two lottery picks this year. Jazz fans are already calling on the team to take BYU's Jimmer Fredette with one of them.

Jason (birmingham)

What are you hearing about Utah moving Millsap or Jefferson since they now have a logjam of frontcourt players i.e. Favors, Okur, Millsap and Jefferson?

Chad Ford
  (1:18 PM)

Teams are calling and asking the Jazz about Millsap. I don't think any of them have heard back yet from the Jazz. But there's a lot of interest in him and if the Jazz are really thinking about blowing the team up, they could get some nice young assets for him.

Brian (Providence)

Any chance Jerry Sloan comes back to Utah now?

Chad Ford
  (1:19 PM)

Don't think so. That ship has sailed.

Chad Ford
  (1:19 PM)

I somehow imagine Jerry Sloan on a tractor somewhere. It may be weeks before he knows what happened.

Jay (NY)

Will Orlando go after CP3 right now?

Chad Ford
  (1:21 PM)

Lots of team trying. There's blood in the water. But from what I can gather, Hornets taking the opposite approach and trying to build a playoff contender. Carl Landry is part of that strategy and I'm told they're still talking to other teams using Marcus Banks' expiring contract to land another veteran.

Miguel (Cape Coral)

Does Utah still try and trade AK47 for some assests?

Chad Ford
  (1:21 PM)

That's probably the more palatable move for the Jazz.

Kyle (Cleveland)

You have mentioned today the cavs interest in gerald wallace, why would the cavs want a 28 going on 29 year old SF? Doesn't make sense to me if their goal is to get younger.

Chad Ford
  (1:23 PM)

Desperation. They haven't had a lot of success in trade talks in landing young, up and coming players. Wallace isn't over the hill at 28 and adds toughness. But you're right, it won't move the needle much.

matt (oakland)

is mayo on the move?

Chad Ford
  (1:24 PM)

Possibly. Grizzlies are talking to several teams, most notably Chicago, about a deal. Grizzlies are always tough to gauge at trade deadline because GM Chris Wallace and owner Michael Heisley don't always see eye to eye. Lots of teams have told me they've had Wallace say yes and Heisley no or Wallace no then Heisley yes. So it's tough to get a read.

Jeremiah (Louisville)

What free agents will New Jersey try to target to play alongside DWill?

Chad Ford
  (1:28 PM)

They're in decent shape if they make a move this summer -- roughly $16 million under assuming the same cap. If the cap goes down (and most expect it will under the new CBA) then it could be considerably less. In 2012 they are basically in the same boat as the Knicks -- maybe slightly worse off as far as cap space goes. The team has a projected payroll of around $50 million in 2012 assuming they keep everyone under contract and keep their other draft picks they own. So if they are going to strike, this summer will be the time to do it.

Pat (Stamford, CT)

Do you think Knicks even knew D-Will was available?

Chad Ford
  (1:29 PM)

Not sure Knicks could've have gotten him for the deal they offered the Nuggets. But yes, they knew.

Borris (LA)

What happens to Felton? Is he staying in Denver?

Chad Ford
  (1:30 PM)

They're shopping him. Ty Lawson is their point guard of the future and as he showed last night, he's probably ready now.

Jessica (Akron)

What will the Thunder do?a) nothingb) a little somethingc) a big something

Chad Ford
  (1:33 PM)

They're looking for a big man. Talked to a bunch of teams including the Blazers (Camby), Clippers (Kaman), Grizzlies (Thabeet), Pacers (Foster)

Kings fans (Sacramento)

Odds the Kings move to Anaheim after this season?

Chad Ford
  (1:34 PM)

Sounds like it's moving that direction, though I don't understand it. Kings will be less popular than the Clippers there. If they're going to move, why not go back to Kansas City. Great new arena and a town that still longs for their team to return.

Craig (Stanford, CA)

Moving James Johnson shows the Bulls are ready to strike now! Chances they end up with (A) Courtney Lee, (B) OJ Mayo, (C) Anthony Parker, (D) someone else, (E) no one.

Chad Ford
  (1:36 PM)

They are $2.9 million under the cap after the Johnson deal. Courtney Lee would fit. So would Anthony Parker. Maybe someone like Brandon Rush. As far as Mayo, they want him, but it would have to be a bigger deal. Mayo doesn't fit under the cap.

kasey (houston)

What's the Rockets move now?

Chad Ford
  (1:39 PM)

Oh boy. Darryl Morey has been super active trying to package all of those assets into a star. He's tried to land Bosh, Melo, DWill, CP3 but no one seems to be in love with Kevin Martin, Luis Scola or any of his young assets. He's going to be creative and aggressive, but just not a lot of interest in what the Rockets are selling.

Vince (Salt Lake City)

Would the Bulls surrender Taj Gibson in a Mayo deal?

Chad Ford
  (1:39 PM)

Don't think so.

Chad Ford
  (1:40 PM)

FYI ... Nets just officially announced the DWill trade.

Scott (Santa Barbara, CA)

Are the Clippers having any luck in their search for a small forward and did they have any shot at Williams?

Chad Ford
  (1:41 PM)

They are on the prowl. Everyone except Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon and DeAndre Jordan is available.

Todd Asmus (MPLS)

Galinari moving from the nuggets or staying?

Chad Ford
  (1:41 PM)

Sounds like he's staying.

Please Say I am Wrong (new jersey)

I am a huge nets fan. as much as I love D Will, I read he is not happy with the trade. Is it possible we just gave our core and picks to Utah and took their headache off their hands??

Chad Ford
  (1:43 PM)

Possible. But I think he's more unhappy about being blindsided by the Jazz. He didn't know anything about it until he watched Sports Center. He didn't get to manipulate the place he went the way Melo did. But I don't think you can read into it that he hates NJ. You need to give him a few weeks with Avery Johnson before we can start credibly writing that.

Pirate (Philly)

Yo Chad... love the chats and tweets... Can you please explain to Knicks fans that getting CP3 or another max-deal caliber player is highly unlikely? Thanks!

Chad Ford
  (1:47 PM)

The Knicks won't have the cap space to do it. If the CBA stayed exactly the same, they'd have around $11.5 million in room. CP3 will be eligible for something in the neighborhood of $18 million. That's a huge paycut ... much bigger than the one Dwyane Wade or LeBron took. However, the CBA won't stay the same. Virtually everyone agrees that the cap will likely go down. Of course, so will max salaries and there may even be a roll back on existing player salaries. But it's hard to envision the Knicks having the room. But it's not impossible. I know CP3 wants to go there. He may try to force a trade and it's possible the Hornets could blink on a deal for something like Chauncey's expiring contract and Landry Fields and Toney Douglas. As we've learned the past week, anything's possible. But if you're claiming it's likely ... I don't see it.

David (SLC)

If the Knicks offered Billups, Fields and a #1 pick for Nash, do you think the Suns would seriously consider it? Thanks.

Chad Ford
  (1:50 PM)

I think I'd make the offer if I was Donnie Walsh. Suns have been adamant that they aren't trading Nash, but you'd have to consider given the massive savings they'd get (Billups is only guaranteed $3.7 million next year). If Knicks took back Pietrus as well, the Suns would be way under the cap this summer and have Fields to show for it.

Brian (Philly)

Hearing anything about potential Sixers' moves?

Chad Ford
  (1:52 PM)

Pretty quiet.

Rob (San Fran)

What was in it for the Warriors to make the deal for Troy Muphy? I keep hearing they plan to buy him out. Did they just dump Brandon Wright just to save a couple pennies?

Chad Ford
  (1:52 PM)

Apparently you don't value 2nd round picks the way the Warriors do.

Kevin (Portland)

Any moves left for the Blazers to make?

Chad Ford
  (1:54 PM)

They're talking. Andre Miller is out there. Joel Przybilla too. They've also, as we've talked about for the past month, been quietly shopping Greg Oden. Devin Harris was their top target and now he's off the table. Not sure where they turn.

Ryan (NL, Canada)

Are the Knicks or Rockets looking to acquire Sam Dalembert?

Chad Ford
  (1:57 PM)

Both teams are looking for a big man. I know Rockets have talked to Kings. Knicks would like him, but he makes $13million. They don't have the salaries to get a deal done.

kyle (brooklyn)

why don the nets try to get Kevin Martin, Scola, Granger etc

Chad Ford
  (1:59 PM)

Good idea. With what? Travis Outlaw? Petro? Farmar? Gadzuric's expiring deal? They are out there talking right now but I don't expect them to land another big fish.

Alex (Ames)

Now that Kahn "has" Randolph, can he be talked into giving up Love?

Chad Ford
  (2:01 PM)

Nope. Teams have tried. He's not letting him go.

Ryan (Grand Rapids)

Please Chris, I am begging you tell me Rip will be traded by Thursday and maybe Prince too??

Chad Ford
  (2:01 PM)

Not looking likely.

Chad Ford
  (2:03 PM)

Gotta run everyone. Should be a fun 24 hours or so through the trade deadline. Keep reading ESPN.com for all the latest. We'll break it all down next week.
