Thanks for joining me. I'm live from the press room in Port St. Lucie. On to the questions ...
is there a hope that Izzy makes the bullpen . I hope so do not just give it to him but i hope he is serious consideration though
As John Harper wrote about in the Daily News today, there's certainly hope if he's healthy. But that's a big if. Terry Collins already has identified Francisco Rodriguez, Bobby Parnell, D.J. Carrasco, Tim Byrdak and Taylor Buchholz as likely Opening Day relievers. That probably leaves two spots for a ton of guys.
How does Chris Young look so far in camp?
I just put a podcast with Chris Young up on the Mets blog at ESPNNewYork.com (http://proxy.espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/15061/podcast-young-on-princeton-hoops-mets) He talks about his shoulder feeling good, and how he's now striding longer as a result, which makes him tougher to hit, since he's closer to the plate when he's releasing the ball.
Pelfrey, Ike, FMart, and a prospect for Fielder-- would Brewers do it?
You trying to send the Mets into bankruptcy court right now?
A lot was written yesterday about the Mets wearing the "whites". What was so significant about it?
Not much. They usually have a standard spring-training blue uniform, which was preceded by that heinous orange one a few years ago. They just did something different on Day 1. They may do it for televised home spring-training games too, I bet. They do still have the cream pinstriped uniforms they introduced last year, but you won't see those until the regular season.
any chance that the mets will actually be contending by july, august, september?
I don't see them as a factor in the division consiering the Phillies' rotation, and frankly I don't think they'll exceed 80 wins. But they certainly can be in the wild-card race at least if things go relatively positively.
How good do Perez and Castillo have to be in camp to not be dumped? If they are just "OK", but their competition for their respective positions is clearly better, is that good enough in the Wilpon's eyes to keep them around rather than eating part or all of their contracts?
Under your scenario, I believe they'll be dumped. It's hard to figure out where Ollie fits if Chris Young and Chris Capuano are good and Tim Byrdak is a lefty-lefty specialist. Maybe as long reliever instead of Pat Misch? Daniel Murphy will be on the team in some capacity. And if Brad Emaus shows anything, Castillo is in trouble too.
More likely not to be on roster Opening Day - Beltran or Pagan?
They both should be on the Opening Day roster. The primary thing that could disrupt that is if Beltran's knee is aching, so the answer to your question would have to be Beltran.
Vegas has mets over/under at 78. What do you say, Adam?
Sounds like it could end up a push.
Is Terry Collins' decision to let Ollie Perez start in spring training merely a ploy to showcase him for a potential trade and if so does it happen?
No. It's more a show of respect for veterans and letting them audition for their preferred roles. If TC was acting unilaterally, it very much sounds like Beltran would just go right to right field. But he'll get a chance in CF first because that's what he wants. Another example: D.J. Carrasco should end up the seventh-inning reliever, but will get a chance to audition for a starting role because he asked.
How is the mood at camp? Are the players and staff looking upbeat?
what have you seen from Emaus so far in camp? Who's your money on to win second base?
It's way to early to start making any evaluations. There have been two days of batting practice against pitchers, and most of the time the hitters don't even swing. They just track balls. This is some fun video of Emaus facing R.A. Dickey (http://proxy.espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/15097/video-full-squad-workout). I believe Murphy and Emaus will be on the team. Because Murph is a lefty and Emaus is a righty, I can see some sharing going on. If you forced me to guess now who would start more, I'd say Emaus. But let's wait and watch a little bit. It's a long way until April 1.
Can they send Izzy to AAA or even a minor league camp to start the season?? It would give them a better look at him while also seeing what the others do in Flushing.
I didn't want to be the wet blanket and ask him if he would go to the minors because I'm sure his mindset right now is to make the team. I imagine if he was making progress but not quite there, they'd say go to Triple-A and give him an out after a month or so. But if it's not there for him, I can very much see him walking away.
o you honestly think Jose Reyes will be a met in 2012??
I have my doubts. It sounds like they're going to wait for open free-agent bidding rather than act sooner. And if Reyes has a solid season, he's going to get a $100 million-plus contract. I just don't know if Sandy Alderson would go there.
Will the spring training game on sunday be televised?
Curt Gowdy, the head of SNY, happened to be in the press room. They're not doing either game -- home vs. Michigan or at Atlanta (Disney). The road game is on the radio. You can find the full spring broadcast schedule on the Mets' web site: http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/schedule/broadcast/index.jsp?c_id=nym
Have you heard any rumblings so far in camp about how the Mets feel vis-a-vis the Phillies? Are they intimidated by that rotation or do they have any fight in them? You would hope they would want to start taking it to their biggest rivals.
I've had near zero dialogue with anybody in camp about the Phillies, which is probably a commentary on the disparity in talent. None of that Jimmy Rollins-Carlos Beltran-type stuff is even relevant any more.
I know they don't happen often (David Justice the last one?) but Perez to the Yanks make any sense?
If Oliver Perez got released, I'm not sure anyone would pick him up for the major league minimum and put him on the roster. He'd probably have to go to AAA first, unless there's something dramatically improved this spring.
According to you, can Willie Harris make the team as 5th outfielder and defensive second base?
I certainly foresee righty-hitting Scott Hairston and lefty-hitting Willie Harris as the two backup outfielders. Nick Evans would be on the outside looking in under that scenario in all likelihood. I keep going back to a year-old story though: Last year we were debating whether Frank Catalanotto or Mike Jacobs would make the team. Then, Daniel Murphy got injured and they both did.
Does the Mets' brass view Ike Davis as the long-term solution at first?
Well, Terry Collins today said he foresees him as a No. 4 hitter long term, who already is among the game's elite defenders. He was certainly pumping him up, and not straight objective, but perhaps that gives some answer.
For some reason I have a good feeling about the Mets this year. I think they are going to pick up their owners and shock all of baseball.
Is thier a chance f-mart can have a break out year?
He's headed to Triple-A and needs to stay healthy. That would be a start.
He's headed to Triple-A and needs to stay healthy. That would be a start.
If the mets were to trade Reyes or Beltran at the deadline, who would they be looking to get in return?
Let me take Beltran as an example. He's making $18.5 million this year, so he'd have roughly $8 million left at trading deadline. The more money the Mets pick up, the better prospect they get. They want straight salary relief, you get lesser prospect.
Hello Adam, any chance TC(or whoever the hitting coach is)can get it into David Wright's head to lay off(his kryptonite) the outside slider?
I haven't spoken that specifically with Dave Hudgens, the new hitting coach. But there will be an effort to cut down on strikeouts. By my observation, after David got beaned up Matt Cain, pitchers started going up and in on him, then getting him on those sweeping pitches away.
I know its early but how do you think the NL east will play out?
Not exactly revolutionary, but:1-Phillies, 2-Braves, 3-Marlins, 4-Mets, 5-Nationals.
If Reyes and the Mets part ways either this year or the next, are there any in-house replacements available? Hu or Tejada? Would the Mets be satisfied with those two?
You're never going to duplicate Reyes' offense with either. Tejada will play shortstop at Triple-A Buffalo, so at least he'll be ready for that. I don't think there's otherwise an heir apparent remotely close to ready. Wilmer Flores may be in the majors at some point in 2012, but it very likely won't be as a shortstop.
When you hear TC talk about the 2B job, he mentions Murphy, Emaus, Castillo and Turner. It seems like people already have Turner on his way to Buffalo. Does he have a legitimate shot to make this team?
The problem is that he's the one with two minor league options remaining, where all the other people are more 'make the team or bust.' Murphy has options, but he's going to be on the team in some capacity. Emaus has to be offered back to the Blue Jays. Castillo needs to be released if he doesn't make it. You can start the season with Emaus or Castillo and, if it's not working, call up Turner. You cannot start with Turner and then go the other direction. It's the same reasoning why Chris Carter, who played great last spring, was sent to Buffalo last year while Jacobs and Catalonotto made it.
A push at 78.....and people come down on you for being pesimistic? Off the field question for you, how many participants were there at bowling night? It was hard to tell from the video
Terry said there were 70 total, including minor leauge staff, etc. I did not want to take attendance.
Any recent word on Santana? Rumor has it that he will have to be more a finesse pitcher a la Pedro circa a few years back and less reliant on speed when/if he comes back...
He's tossing on flat ground. On a mound about May 1. Back late June or early to mid July. Certainly coming back from shoulder surgery, you're not sure what you're going to get.
Why was Howard Johnson treated so badly from the new Mets front office? They didn't consider him after a long service time for the franchise.
They did drag their feet in making a decision on his role, which probably didn't sit well, but they did have a ton of things on their plate coming into a new situation. In the end, they offered him Brooklyn or St. Lucie hitting coach and he declined.
You were worried about being the "wet blanket" in regards to Izzy?!?! Isn't that a realistic question for someone coming back from another TJ surgery?? Spending time in the minors should be a realistic approach for Izzy with a 30 day opt out.
Can we wait until he pitches in some Grapefruit League games and we see how he's doing? Patience.
What's Omar and Jerry doing this year?
Omar, reportedly, is chatting with Danilo Gallinari about being traded. He's getting paid $1.1 million a year or so for this year and next by the Mets, and supposedly won't be making a decision on what he wants to do for a month or so. Jerry Manuel has made at least some appearances on MLB Network.
Over/under 23 HRs for Bay this year? I read Bay thinks he'll have 30...
I'll take over on 23. Bay said he goes into every year thinking 30 is attainable. He didn't quite predict he'd reach that with Citi Field as his home park.
do you think the mets would consider hitting Bay in the 2 spot to get him more fastball?
Not now. Pagan is batting No. 2. And Terry Collins said if Castillo makes the team -- a big, big if -- maybe he'd put Castillo there.
whats going on with the Parnell did they just give up on him as a starter?
They let him audition two years ago later in the season and didn't feel he had enough polished pitches to be a starter. That ship has sailed, at least as a Met. He'll be the set-up man.
If Reyes does leave after this year how soon will Wilmer Flores be ready to take his role?
Wilmer is too slow-footed to end up a shortstop, from everything I've heard/seen.
Is it realistic for Beato to make team over Misch?
If you put Misch as the long man, there's still one more slot where Beato can beat out Izzy, Igarashi, Acosta, Tankersley, etc.
Honestly, name a worse pitching staff than the Mets have this year. I try to be positive but its hard with the staff they have right now.
Livan Hernandez is the Opening Day starter for the Nationals.
Anyway, thanks for joining me. Please check out the Mets blog at: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets
