Anybody have a Daytona 500 hangover. Not sure what to do back in my own house after 13 days in Daytona Beach. Yeah I do. Let's talk about what happened and what's ahead. Amazing stories, from Trevor Bayne winning to Brian Keselowski making the field. Fire away.
Did you let the tv on for Ernie at the motel so he could watch the race? Was he cheering for Dale Jr?
He had the best seat in the house from the hotel bed. All the comforts of home, HD TV and he could hear the engines through the cracked window.
Hey Newt, fuel injected engines will eliminate restrictor plates and tapered spacers so will NASCAR control horse power output electronically?
Good question. Haven't heard exactly what impact fuel injection will have at plate tracks, but haven't heard about taking the plates away. Before they get to that the governing body needs to figure out how to make these cars work where they can't push them for 500 miles.
Great start to the year and now the real season begins. Is this new Goodyear tire so durable that we will be seeing fuel only stops at all the tracks?
Don't think you'll see what happened at Daytona everywhere. The surface had as much to do with lack of tire wear as the tire.
Will ECR announce the cause of all their engine failures or will that remain a closely guarded secret?
Pretty sure overheating plus all the tweaks made in the last week had something to do with it. I'll put a call in later today and see what I can find out. If I find out before the end of the chat I'll let you know.
Why on earth did JJC check off NW if she only running 5 races?
Good question for her. Doesn't make sense.
Dave, do we expect any type of payback from some of the wrecks that happened at Daytona?
Probably not. Nothing was blatant enough to warrant it.
Need more Bayne merchandise!
It's on order. Think he'll catch Junior?
What racetrack does dale jr. have the best chance of getting back into victory lane?
Of the first five races I'll say Bristol. After that, maybe Talladega.
Does team Red Bull get one of their drivers in the chase, and if so, which driver is it?
Hi David,Could you explain to me why Richard Petty is listed as the car owner on Trevor's car when he drives for the Wood Brothers. I know he has a contract with RFR but how does this relate to Richard Petty? It is just confusing to me. Thanks!
Because the Wood Brothers acquired the points from one of the two Petty cars that disappeared to guarantee Bayne made the 500 and the only way to do that was to technically list Petty as an owner. Happens all the time.
Since Bayne doesn't accumulate drivers points for Sprint Cup does the owner still receive points? Therefore the team has the opportunity to stay in the top 35 and not "have" to qualify to make races???
The owner does receive points and could win the owner's championship if the Wood Brothers are able to enter every race and be compeititve enough. That also applies to staying in the top 35.
By the way, just checked at RCR and they are still working on why the engines blew.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.15 PM HI DAVID WHO YOU HAVE FOR PHOENIX SUNDAY
How about Trevor Bayne? He's a better short track driver than plate racer. Odds aren't in his favor, though, so I'll go with Kyle Busch.
David, I was at Daytona on Sunday, went through Sprint Fan Zone and took my buddy to his first race. Anyways, do you think we would've seen more players at the front of the field if not for the big one? Also, you think a new package will be in place for 'Dega in April?
The early wrecks definitely changed the complexion of the race. We never got to see all that JJ and Jeff Gordon and others had. NASCAR is still evaluating on the package. If they ask Dale Jr. there'll definitely be changes before Dega.
Talking to my family during and after the 500, I came to a simple conclusion. Trevor Bayne will be the next Bill Elliott. Impressive (but not legendary) career and liked by everyone. Do you agree? If not, name a driver that would be a better comparison.
You may be right, but it's too early to tell. He also may be the next Jimmie Johnson if he gets with the right team. Nothing against the Wood Brothers. Loved seeing them in Victory Lane and believe it was great for the sport. But from a longevity standpoint Bayne may be better with Roush or another organization.
Doesn't Jack Roush have a valid point that NASCAR's decision to black flag David Ragan on that last restart was arbitrary and rarely if ever called? For sure, if that would have been Jr and Stewart they wouldn't have sent him to the back.
Not at all. Talked to officials and they felt they had no choice. Here's the deal. There never has been a reason for a driver to jump the restart to get in front for a two-car tandem before. As Ragan told me after the race, a year ago he simply would have floored it straight ahead.
So the nationwide is at 40 cars, will NASCAR try and get JRM or other teams to bring an extra car to run?
I doubt it. NASCAR is comfortable if less than 43 cars are in the field.
If Bayne declares Sprint cup as his championship series, would his 1 victory most likely qualify him for a wild-card entry into the chase?
First, he's not likely to delare for Cup. If he were, he'd have to do it before Phoenix because two zeros in points would be fatal. Remember for the wild card besides having the most wins of those outside the top 10 you have to be in the top 20 in points. One win likely wouldn't do it, anyway.
Trevor Bayne is a Roush driver correct? Will he be in the 6 next year?
He is Roush for Nationwide and Wood Brothers for Cup, but Jack I believe has the ultimate rights after this year. Interesting on the 6. David Ragan has a few more years left on his deal, but another bad year and Roush will have little choice but to let him go. The funny thing in a not-so-funny way is his mistake Sunday may have put Bayne into his ride.
What did you think of Jr's comments after the 500. He looked like he was in a good mood. Last year he would have been distraught after a wreck. Is this the Letarte mentality, and do you see it paying off later in the season?
I was impressed. He handled things well and you're right, Letare is a big reason for keeping him in line. But before we give Letarte an honorary doctorate in Junior psychology let's see how things stand if they're struggling in June.
Now that we had a great, sold-out Daytona 500 and huge tv audience, you think all the whiners who moan about the car, chase, tracks, rules, Toyota, young drivers will finally get with the program?
I hope so. This was just a continuation of what we saw last year.
Not to be too mean to young Mr. Bayne, but how much of a harbinger is this and how much is just dumb luck? Need I remind everyone, this was won twice by Michael Waltrip and Sterling Marlin each and once by Ward Burton.
You make good points. But Trevor was fast all weekend and in his first Cup race a year ago he finished 17th. Read my piece on espn.com and see what your perspective is.
I remember last year an article from someone about the different ways Scott Speed and Paul Menard reacted to required media availability for the brief time they were in the top 12 in points. My question is: do they ignore the points for the first few races (sorta like the top 35 rule) or will guys like Gilliland, Labonte, Regan Smith, and Allmendinger have required media availability at Phoenix?
Top 12 will be required unless something has changed from last year.
With all the changes NASCAR made to the points system, and rules limiting drivers to run for a championship in only one series, it was kind of fitting that no first place drivers points were handed out.
In Cup, Nationwide or Trucks. Crazy.
Do you think Junior can win this weekend at Phoenix? I think it might be one of his best chances of the year for a couple reasons: The 24 team almost won there last season if were not for Gordnon choking on the last restart, Junior has won there before and The 88 team had a real strong run at Daytona minus being taken out in that last wreck. Two huge wins for the sport in back to back weeks for NASCAR wouldn't hurt either.
I wouldn't rule it out. I asked during our racecast chat what would be best for the sport, putting the 21, 43 or 88 back in Victory Lane. The 88 won overwhelmingly.
Do you think this season might be the best oppurtunity that Ford might have to win a championship in a while? They looked real strong at the end of last season and at Daytona this year.
They were pretty good a few years ago when Carl Edwards won nine races. But you are correct that the Fords are much further ahead of where they were a year ago.
Do you see Danica getting another top 15 this weekend?
Maybe so. Won't be as many Cup regulars driving.
Waltrip should just hang up his driver gloves when it comes to cup. He seemed to be at least a part of multiple incidents and just misses. The large wreck he caused affected 14 drivers seasons that now have to climb out of a large hole. He proved he could still race in the truck series which is where he belongs.
I'll beg to disagree. Neither incident he had was his fault. The drivers involved agreed. It was a byproduct of unknowns in tandem racing.
Does Trevor Bayne have a multi year contract with Roush and Woods Brothers and do you think Bayne will be in the UPS #6 in 2012?
The Wood Brothers have him for a year. Roush multiple. See earlier answer on the 6.
Newt, I don't know about you, but if I were Trevor Bayne, the first thing I would do is call Scarlett Johannson.
Read he likes Jennifer Anniston even though he admits she's a little old for him.
Hey David, in your opinion, which driver pulled the biggest Daytona 500 upset: Trevor Bayne, Derrike Cope, or someone else?
I'll go with Bayne on this one. Plus it was one of the best stories I've seen out of Daytona in years.
So Trevor Bayne could be racing today for Jr Motorsports or Waltrip? How did they ever let him go to Roush?
Money. They didn't have it.
So now that drivers get penalized more for bad finishes than they did with the old points system, how many fewer bad days/DNFs can teams have now? It seems liike 3 or more would be an almost impossible hole to dig out of.
That's what I argued when they went to this system. Still not sold.
Another Jr. question: Why do people continue to scrutinze every move he makes do you think? He did excellent this weekend except for his bad luck again, and I continue to read how he stinks and should retire. I feel so sorry for the guy.
You didn't read he stinks and should retire here. I liked what I saw. Some people just like to look for the negatives.
So how did you like Dale Jr's performance during the 500?
He was in position to win it until a tire went flat. I'd give him an 8. There's a familiar number.
Happy National Margarita Day. What happened to Stewart at the end of the 500? He drove the wheels off the car in the Nationwide Race and faded to nowhere in the 500.
Happy Happy to you as well. He just lost his drafting partner at the wrong time and never recovered in the Cup race.
Still trying to wrap my head around the new points system. Are guys like Jr. Gordon, JJ, Harvick in a deeper hole than they would have been last year?
Yep. Much heavier penalty for finishing 30th or worse under this system. Do the math. Or percentages.
So Trevor's in SF today... I hope they keep him in the clean part (ha-ha) of the city by the bay.
He's at an ice cream social. Kind of envious.
How much longer will Sam "Crash" Hornish be in the Penske organization? Seems to me he should switch back to IRL.
Roger is pretty loyal. But you do have to wonder how many chances he'll get.
When Gordon was complaining about the 3-4 wide racing so early in the race was he specifically referring to Waltrip?
I don't think so. It takes more than one driver to make it 3 wide. I saw Newman and a lot of other drivers doing silly things at the start.
Being a Mark Martin fan I was pretty happy he was lined up behind Tony for last restart i was thinking big. What happend they didnt go anywhere.
Not sure exactly what happened. I was chasing down Dale Jr. But I was a bit stunned to see him up there at the end. He was nowhere most of the day.
So freaking happy for the Wood Brothers.
You and me both, brother.
I've never seen Kyle happier with an 8th placed finish. What was that all about?
Maturity and thankfulness he survived a crazy day.
Well i had the daytona hangover for about 24 hrs after the race.I was in a bad mood after my driver got in a wreck. But I think i went to every race speed weeks had to offer. Every race had its good/bad moments. But overall i was a little disappointed in the racing. Not really a fan of the 2 car stuff. What do you think
At least you had great weather the last four days. Not a great fan of the tandem driving, either. A driver shouldn't have to depend on another to win.
Bad Sunday for all Hendrick cars? David do you think all 4 teams have a legitimate shot at the title this year after the crew chief changes?
Hardly. But I do believe JJ and JG have a shot.
Bayne might catch Jr. Fans like Jr because he is down to earth like them. Bayne is a younger down to earth kid.
Trevor does have some Junior-like qualities in his personality, but he's much calmer and mature at 20 than Junior was. Not a hell raiser.
How impressed were you with Danica on Saturday?
Would have been more impressed had she known how to swap with Clint Bowyer after being pushed to the front. Still a ways to go.
People have been saying that Bayne can run for ROTY next year. I say no and it is like Brad K when he had too many races the year before? Who is correct?
You are correct.
I understand the excitement over Trevor Bayne but aren't some getting a little carried away? I'm excited to see the Wood Brothers back in Victory Lane and Trevor seems to be the real deal but Daytona is a completely different animal to any other track. The chances he even seriously contends for another win at Cup level this year are pretty slim, aren't they?
I agree people are a bit carried away, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him win another Cup race. He's pretty good and the Roush Ford he has isn't bad either.
Jack Roush said, "I didn't like the finish". Doesn't Jack Roush know alot more about NASCAR than some official like Pemberton?
The funniest thing about Roush this weekend is he said he liked the two-car tandem because he wrecked fewer cars. Last I looked he had a scrap pile in the garage and the 6 with a black flag.
Great first race, but I still think races that go 4.5 or 5 hours are too long. Any talk of shortening more races?
I'm all for it except the Daytona 500 and Coke 600. No talk of shortening this season, but some have been over the past year and you could see more in future years. My attention span goes 3-3 1/2 hours.
Do you think that the hype we are seeing around Junior right now will soon fade after we get to a real track again? Last season, when he luckily finished 2nd at Daytona, there was a lot of fanfare around his run.
Listen, Junior is NASCAR's most popular driver whether he wins or loses. It may fade some, but it won't go away.
What % of Woods Brothers does Roush-Fenway own?
Don't think any. Roush just sells them cars and engines.
I still haven't heard any explainations from Tony Eury Jr. about why he didn't have Danica doing 2 car drafts during Wednesday and Thursday practice. It's as if they didn't expect her to qualify that well, then race that well the first 30-35 laps to be in a position to lead, thoughts?
It's more than a matter of asking her to do it. She has to have the mentality and will to do it. And nobody thought two-car drafts would be prevalent in the NW series until late in the week when teams started trying it.
If Bayne were to change to Cup, I understand why his points wouldn't count, but why would the win? Shouldn't it be both wins/points or neither?
Because NASCAR wanted to leave it where Bayne would have a shot at the Chase if he could be in the top 20. But Bayne doesn't plan to swap.
With the great start to the season for The Busch Brothers do you think they will stay Top 10 all the way until Richmond?
No reason to think otherwise. They did a year ago.
Do you expect Dale Jr to set his 100 race losing streak record at Texas?
Let me look back into my crystal ball. No. Maybe. I don't know.
Has Hendrick said anything about The Bachelor?
Haven't heard him be asked. But have heard he isn't overjoyed.
You act as if the Wood Brothers aren't practically a Roush team as it is. I think it's safe to say that Jack had some great equipment for Trevor Bayne in that 21....
I don't pretend at all that the Wood Brothers aren't an extension of Roush. I also don't pretend that Stewart-Haas isn't an extension of Hendrick.
Since Dale Jr seems to run best at Daytona and Talladega have they ever considered putting him on a partial schedule?
You started National Margarita Day early, right?
Does Landon have a NW ride yet? He needs one!
Not that I've heard.
Ward Burton winning the 500 was kind of an upset. I'm still trying to figure out what he said in victory lane that day :)
So is the rest of the world outside of backwoods Virginia.
The main driver involved was his employee. What is Reut going to say. He also turned Kyle Busch if I remember correctly. Once Waltrip crashed out he even admited he had no idea what he was doing.
Kyle and Reutimann said Waltrip was not at fault. enough for me.
As a Kyle Busch fan, we thought it was interesting that Kyle's 3 biggest enemies-Harvick, Brad and Reuitmann-all had really bad races. Karma maybe?
I think it was karma that a potential young superstar stole the day on the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's death. As in it's time to move on, folks.
The 500 was a great story. Not only Trevor winning (and taking over the "sliced bread" name from Logano by the way), but the 21 car winning IN PEARSON'S RETRO PAINT JOB??? How cool is that?
And did you know Trevor was born in Spartanburg, hometown of Pearson. Spooky.
guess I should have said, how much longer will he be on the NASCAR side of things.
I'm sure I should remember the first part of this conversation but it is slipping my mind.
What do you think Danica will do in 2012? Do both the IRl and NASCAR or pick one and stick with it?
Drive a Cup car for JR Motorsports or Stewart-Haas Racing. Bank on it.
Ice Cream Social? Is Bayne still in high school?
Amazingly, it was scheduled before he won.
looking at how jrs pitcrew and team perform during the 500 and dealing with the primary car getting wrecked they looked better motivated than the 88 mcgrew led crew last year i hope that leads to a better season
Optimism. Like it.
Racing and especially NASCAR has always been copycat. Does Bayne's win send the sign that the youth movement is on and the older drivers days are numbered?
Nope. Just means there's a new young star in town. JJ, Jeff Gordon and 20-year-old Denny Hamlin andcompany still are the guys to beat.
I propose all chats should consist of the best email questions you received during the previous week. The rapid-fire style of chats does not allow enough time for the moderator to sort for the best questions. I am sick of the Duh questions (Why does Jr. get so much media attention?), the questions that require a complete guess (Who will be driving for Red Bull after Kahne leaves?), and the questions for which the answers would already been in a news release if they were known (What races will Danica be running in 2015?). Why does anyone think you know the answers to these ridiculous questions? With that, will Jr?s son ever race for RCR in a black #3 car? That would be awesome!!!
I'll pass your message along. Maybe you can moderate.
Do you think NASCAR will try to make another change at Talladega or Daytona to stop the two car draft at restrictor plate races?
Dale Jr. hopes so. I asked after the race and was told too early to tell. But my guess is you'll see something, whether it's a test or change to the plate or car.
Newt, Nascar concerned about the two car draft, or is that the new norm? Not a big fan myself
I'm not a fan, either. But the race was exciting and the stands were full, and that is what NASCAR wanted more than anything. I'd look for changes myself.
Is it unrealistic to predict that all 4 RCR's and all 4 HMS cars make the chase?
They said on the tv broadcast that 9 cars were running the ECR engine package. Who besides the 4 RCR and 2 EGR cars had that under their hoods?
Putting me on the spot here. If I had a lineup in front of me I could tell you but it's not coming to me at the moment. Sorry. I will say the others weren't major players.
I think that Kevin harvick is going to fall straight off the map?
Gotta agree with Tony above. Yes it was nice Trevor won but he just got lucky. Why does the media slobber all over themselves over this? Remember the hype over Joey Logano? How many wins in Cup? Ever made the chase? The kid was in the right place at the right time. see ya.
But we like to slobber. And I agreed we overblow things. It's what we do.
Calling all sponsors: PLEASE call Jack Roush and the Wood Brothers and represent Trevor Bayne!
Are you calling from the Bachelor show?
kenseth seemed to be in good spirits, even after being a victim of the waltrip wreck plague and going head first into the wall. There must be some big optimism over at the rfr shops.
Hey, it was the first race and drivers expect bad things to happen there. No reason to be down. But there is optimism.
I don't think there was any issues running 3 wide. The only time there seemed to be an issue was when a pairing got separated and another pairing caught up to them too quickly.
The issue is 3 wide moving in a pack. Gets the air off the left rear of cars and that causes havoc.
Do you think that Jeff Gordon help Trevor when he raced with him in the 150? Did make others want to work with him after seeing Jeff work so well together??
It helped a ton. Trevor picked up huge respect from that race.
Why is Hendrick mad at Batchelor?? I miss something.
Look at the show's website and read the story of Emily reliving the death of Ricky Hendrick, the father of her child, in the 2004 Martinsville plane crash. And I didn't say Hendrick was upset. I just said he can't like having that relived on TV.
Bayne's Sprint Cup career has started like Harvick's and McMurray's... win a race within his first 3 starts. After 10 years, is it more likely to be like Harvick's (15+ wins, Chase berths) or McMurray's (a few wins, but only in the biggest races & no Chase berths)?
I've got a different feeling here. And Harvick has won two Nationwide titles and been close a few times in Cup. He's pretty darn good.
Carl didn't seem happy with 2nd and Matt, Biff and Ragan couldn't have been happy seeing Bayne win. Will they comlain to Roush that Woods is getting too much help?
You don't get many chances to win the Daytona 500 and he just got beat by a 20-year-old.
David, another team to use an ECR engine was the 78 of Smith.
There you go. Thanks.
To be more fair and inclusive, do you think NASCAR should limit the number of cars per owner that can make the chase, say to 2 cars per owner max?
No, if you're good enough to get four teams in then good for you.
Why doesn't Dale jr like the 2 car tandem? Are the rules the same for everyone?
Because it's not really racing when you're pushing each other around the track. Then again, plate racing isn't real racing in general.
Gottan run. Thanks for all the great questions. Check out the piece on ESPN.com and get to know Trevor Bayne better. Follow me on Twitter as well at @dnewtonespn. Who knows. I may answer a question there. Later.
