Do you think that there will be a lockout after midnight?
My guess is no. I think there will be another extension. Sounds like there's growing momentum for something like a 7 to 10 day extension. All right, this chat is up and rolling.
Have the Panthers even hinted at what they're going to do at QB?
Not really. I honestly think they're still in the process of sorting out what direction they will go in at QB.
Can we start the chat early? Pretty please?
What will Shaun Rogers mean to the Saints D?
Don't think he comes in and dominates. But I think his presence will make Sedrick Ellis a much better player. Ellis is a guy who really can be good, as long as he stays healthy and has some talent around him.
With the CBA up in the air does the NFL office still work on making the 2011 schedule?
That is an excellent question. Actually had a conversation with somebody about this the other day and this is a high-ranking official with one of my teams. He said, yes, the league still goes about business as usual on creating the schedule.
Can we get started now?
CJ, come on, we've been at it for five or six minutes already!!!
How's the recovery coming?
Very well. Thanks. Intensity of therapy was upped dramatically today and I'm gonna hurt tomorrow. I'm icing the knees as we chat. Plan is to try running (lightly) by end of next week.
Do you think there will be free agency this year?
Yes, I do. I think that things will get done at some point. Obviously, things already are getting pushed back. But I think they'll get it done and have time for free agency.
are gamble and marshall both going to be back in carolina? any chance the panthers look at p. peterson from lsu at number 1?
My guess is Marshall leaves. As far as Peterson, I like him a lot. But Hurney and Richardson are traditional guy and the rule of thumb is you don't take a CB at No. 1. But, hey, might be time to break that rule.
Pat, huge fan, you do a great job of covering the NFC South. Just wondering what your take is on the Garrett Hartley extension. I know he was great two years ago for the Saints, but he had a rough last season where he missed critical kicks and was benched at one point. What were the Saints thinking locking him up for 5 years!?
Kid has lots of talent, although he has been erratic at some points. But I think, in some ways, they're thinking a vote of confidence might settle him down and help make him more consistent.
Does N.O. have enough young LB talent to get by another season?
Think they'll address that in draft and free agency. Think they have to add a guy or two.
Will the Saints play the opening game of the year again this year vs the Packers?
Definitely makes sense and would seem to be a leading scenario. Only other realistic one I see is Green Bay opening with Chicago. But I'd like to be in Lambeau Field on opening night.
Wanted to tell you thank you for being early. Not to rag on others, but I have noticed many other chats start up about 4 after. I really love your chats and analysis. Thank you very much!
I don't guarantee it, but I generally try to start anywhere from five to 10 minutes early.
im a little taken back by the shockey signing...cant help but to think of the keyshawn johnson fiasco a few years ago
That's kind of my thoughts on it. Not sure he has much left and not sure he's a good fit. But, hey, Hurney and Rivera did it for a reason and we'll see what happens.
Mike Smith responded to a recent question in the AJC about the WR corp and mentioned Roddy, Douglas, Kerry Meier and Weems... but not Jenkins or Finneran. Finn has since been told he was gone. Can we read anything into this? MJ is a nice blocker and all but we need a playmaker opposite Roddy and Jenks makes alot of dough.
I wouldn't get too carried away. They really like Jenkins as a role player and he's a good locker-room guy. That said, I still think they'll try to bring in a WR who can help make them better.
Hi Pat. Since the Panthers reached for a tight end, do you think we have another "out of character" signing coming at QB?
It's possible. The door is definitely open there. And they know they have to do something big at QB to be competitive.
Only one that makes sense?? How about Green Bay @ Atlanta Thurs nite week 1?
Think the opener's pretty much got to be in Lambeau.
Any chance of Palmer ending up a Panther??
Yes, entirely possible. I don't think they've narrowed it down yet and much will depend on how guys come available -- trade, release, whatever. But I think they've got to be looking at that whole group of Palmer, McNabb and the two or three other guys that everyone suspects will be available.
Do you think that the Chargers have a chance in the playoffs this coming season?
I'm gonna leave the Chargers alone. I picked them to go to the Super Bowl last season. How'd that work out for me?
WhoDat ! Pat, and Welcome to Mr. Sed-Rogers Neighborhood, won't you be our neighbor. ;).Rogers doesn't have to dominate, but if he can tie up the center & a guard, Mr. Sed should wreck havoc on opposing offenses..Remember, we had Casillas (listed as a starter) on IR last year, and Gallette has had a year to learn--should really open up Saints drafting
Yep, that's what I'm saying. I think Rogers' presence allows Ellis to take the next step.
Pat, you mentioned in one of your blogs that both Brian Finneran and Jimmy Willims will not receive contract offers to stay with the Falcons. Did you mean Brian Williams?
Yep, my bad. I'll go back and fix it as soon as we finish. Actually, the report was they would not see offers before the start of a lockout or the start of free agency. That doesn't rule out the possibility of them re-signing at some point later on.
What Panthers coach Ron Rivera plans to do with Armanti Edwards, the panthers second round selection from this year
Hopefully, at least let him get on the field! Seriously, I think they're hoping he can fit into the WR mix. Maybe a little wildcat here and there, but they mainly want him to be a WR.
Pat, Who has been your favorite player (not most talented) to have covered in you career?
Wow, favorite player? Well, we really can't have favorite players. Guys I've admired most and we'll limit this to my newspaper days when I was with one team every day -- John Lynch, Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, Trent Dilfer, Paul Gruber, Jake Delhomme, Jon Beason, Jordan Gross, DeAngelo Williams and Jason Kyle.
pat y do u think the panthers will keep marshall.....u know they tendered him right?
Yep and maybe they're hoping someone signs him, so they can add draft pick.
Pat, just a comment, as much as I dislike the falcons, I do have to give props to Mr. Blank. YOu have to admit he is the best dressed owner in the NFL and kind of looks like he has just stepped out of "Gone With the Wind".
Yep, fascinating guy in a lot of ways.
love your stuff pat,why is jason kyle one of your favorite players
Know he's not a big name because he's a long-snapper. But he's one of the smartest guys I've ever covered. Look at the way he's carved a 17-year career out of being able to do one thing very well. He's parlayed that into multiple businesses. He's also a very down-to-earth and "regular" guy.
Pat, do you know what Paul Gruber is doing these days?
No, but that's a good question and one I can check into. One of the things we're planning if there is a lockout is a series on "Where are they now?" I'll put Gruber on my list.
Any reason to think Shockey isn't going to destroy any bit of confidence Clausen has left?
I can't think of one.
Jimmy Clausen looked good last yr with protection. Throws were kind of wobbly... but pretty good decision making considering.... what do you think? have you gone back and watched video?
Yes, there were a few moments. But the problem is he spent so much of last year running for his life that I don't think you can really figure out much about him from last year. That in the fact that he was in perhaps the least-imaginative offense in NFL history.
Hey Pat, hope all is well! You seem to lean towards a DE as a first round selection for the Atlanta Falcons. Which one appeals to you the most? Could Robert Quinn possibly drop to our pick?
Saw my buddy DLed has him going to Falcons in his latest mock. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
Pat, why don't you let the Shockey move play out before criticizing it?
I think I just said a couple of minutes ago that I don't like the move, but Hurney and Rivera made it for a reason and we'll see how it plays out. Think I'm being pretty fair there.
Jimmy Clausen can't throw over an o-line to save his life. Pat, do you know his % of passes deflected at the line?
Yep, but you know what, there's a QB in New Orleans that sometimes has problems with that too. He's even shorter than Clausen, but he's got a coaching staff that factors his size into that and doesn't put him in a position where he's throwing into the defensive line too often. It seems to have worked well for Mr. Brees.
dwill we see see a 2011 nfl schedule released then like usual?
That's my understanding from that conversation I mentioned earlier. If they hold to tradition, it'll come sometime in April.
not to be mean but are you eating crow about Shockey after saying there was no way they would?
Look, it's not like I was on the witness stand testifying about something crucially important. I voiced my thoughts on how Panthers have dones business the last decade or so. Obviously, they've either made an exception here or are changing the way they do business.
Lets get away from all this Shockey talk and get to something important. Will K2 have a huge season for the Bucs? He has predicted doubling his receiving yards from last season, do you think this is realistic?
I saw that. Well, I think it would be mathematically impossible to double his stats from last season. But he definitely can improve on them. Freeman's only going to keep getting better and the young WRs are going to open things up for Winslow. As long as his knees hold up, he could put up some real big numbers.
Hey Pat, long time reader from the Tampa Tribune days. I'm more concerned over the free agency possibility for Davin Joseph than I am of Ruud. Ruud's a great guy, but I believe he's ready for that long term deal that some other team can provide. Tell me we're not losing Joseph.
Suspect the Bucs will make sure they don't lose Joseph. He and Penn are hugely important. They're the two guys most responsible for keeping Freeman standing and Freeman is the franchise.
Will any team in the NFC South get Mark Ingram?
Possible. I still wouldn't totally rule out Saints even after re-signing Thomas. Can't rule out Falcons. But they both have some other needs they probably want to address first.
Why are people linking us to Cam Newton, when Blaine Gabbert is conisdered the best QB?
Pat, do you see the Bucs bringing in another young running back to grow alongside Blount?
I think that would be a wise move. Doesn't have to be a real early draft pick. You can get good guys in middle rounds. Like to see them get someone who can share a few of Blount's carries or fill in if he misses a game or two. Keep Caddy as third-down back, but don't ask him to be a 20-carry guy if Blount goes down.
hey i was shocked as well Pat about Jeremy S. but maybe they are changing? Who knows? (like I said not trying to be mean) was just trying to see what you thought and thanks for sharing!
Yep, they may be changing. Or maybe this is a one-time exception. We'll see over time if they really are changing.
have you said whos your predicteded winner of the nfc south yet
Umm, let's wait to see if there is a season. And wait to see what teams do in the draft and perhaps free agency. We'll do the prediction thing in late August or elary September.
Where does Blount rank among NFC South backs?
Hmmm, that's a good one. Still have to go with Turner at No. 1. I also think very highly of DeAngelo and Stewart's great when healthy. I'd put Blount ahead of all the New Orleans backs. For now, he's a little behind Turner, DeAngelo and Stewart, but I think that could change in his second season.
Bobby Dylan would argue the Panthers are changin'
Yes, he would. Also, Dylan has what I think is one of the most underrated songs of all-time. Think it's called just "Hurricane" -- the one about Rueben Carter, the boxer. Not really a Dylan fan, but that's a great song.
Pat why are you not giving any love to Tyrell Sutton? who last year against the Saints he played really well in that game
All right, let's hear it for Tyrell Sutton. Seriously, you're right, he did some good things last year, but I don't have time to list every single RB in the NFC South in a chat where I'm trying to answer questions as fast as possible.
if carolina doesnt like a certain player at #1 could they just let time expire an wait to draft a few spots lower?
Hypothetically, yes. But I don't see Jerry Richardson playing games. Then again, as we just said, maybe the times are changing.
Pat, you forgot about Goodson and Cadillac as well. Come on guys this chat isn't so Pat can say really nice things about our teams.
Hey, let's not forget Lynell Hamilton!!!
pat what are the chances your coming to app state this year? me and jeff like to tali gate with you
You know, one regret about my time in Carolinas was I never got up to an App State game. Wish I had. Been close to Boone because my friend and former co-worker Stan Olson has a place up there. Gorgeous area. Other regret is I never got to a Duke basketball game at Cameron. I would have liked to seen that just once.
With the ticket sales drought and the Glazer's cashflow crunch, do you think that there is any chance of the LA Bucs?
No, NFL wants a franchise in Tampa. Lots of other teams are stronger candidates for LA.
Pat, what happened to Biermann this year?
Ah, man, that's a waist-high fastball, but I've got to watch it go by and stay on the high road.
Pat this just in there is a new Extension for 7 more days
Believe you, but let's have a couple more of you confirm. If true, can't see it as anything but a good thing.
Who should be the next coach for the NC STATE Wolfpack men's basketball team? LOL ... Just kidding!
Mike Madagan, who just stepped aside at Saint Leo, my alma mater!!! Just kidding, but Mike had a nice run, conducting himself and program with class and now is moving onto other things in his life.
Biermann was on a housewives show, that's what happened!
I didn't say it. All right, we're past 2 p.m., but I'll go ahead and take two more questions.
what do you think of Charlie Sheen?
Thought he was great in Major League.
how d williams interview on espn this week, he is such a funny guy
DeAngelo's great. Funny guy and smart guy. Plus, he's one of those guys that can talk about anything and make it seem interesting.
Who wins big game tomorrow? (dook at UNC)
Honestly, don't have a favorite there. But I will watch the game because it's such a great rivalry. All right, time to sign off. Thanks to all for stopping by. Have a great weekend.
