Hey everyone. Under the weather here, but gonna suck it up for my weekly chat. Just polished off a bowl of chicken noodle soup-ready for action.
If you were the Miami Dolphins who would you draft at 15th or would you trade down and target somebody else? Thanks
Everyone seems to put M Ingram in that spot-and yes, that makes sense. But as a rule of thumb, I am not a big fan of using high picks on RBs. A field stretching WR would be of interest. Trading down seems very logical. I see several needs on the 'Phins-including QB. I would like to give Henne another chance, but also need to provide competition for him. Ponder in the late first? Locker? I don't love where Miami sits to fill their needs.
Which teams will take a look at Gallery in FA? He's a G only at this point, right?
Yes, OG only at this point. But a good one-when healthy. Could see a lot of teams being interested and Oak will have a tough time keeping him considering all of the guys they have up this year. That OL could be a real nightmare next season for the Raiders. How about Gallery to Seattle? KC? PGH?
Does Otogwe still have a lot to contribute? Good fit for the Broncos?
Yes-and Yes. I saw a question here about Bob Sanders as well. There are a lot of teams with Safety needs, but most really need a FS type instead of an in-the-box banger. Otogwe fits that FS need better than Sanders-and of course, he is more reliable. The two teams that keep jumping out to me on Otogwe are Dallas and Miami. He would do wonders for those Ds. How about Sanders to Seattle next to Thomas? Not seeing a ton of spots for a SS to land.
Gallery to the Bears. Kreutz, if he comes back, would make Gallery a lot better...along with Tice!
I like that fit too. Gallery could do a lot of good a lot of places-if healthy.
Matt, Please help me understand why the Vikings franchised Greenway a good LB but who will be 28 next season? But they decide to not give any designation to Rice who in my opinion is a top 10 WR when healthy and turns 25 on opening day? What would you have done? Long answer please thanks!
Agreed. 4-3 WLBs are just too easy to find and while I like Greenway a lot, Franchising him was the wrong move. I would have chosen Rice or R Edwards even over Greenway for that tag. There just are not THAT many teams running the 4-3 any more who need big time help at WLB. But everyone needs a WR and DE. Doesn't make sense to me. As for Rice, the only caveat I have is his health. Maybe he isn't as healthy as he appeared. But he sure looked good to finish the season. Imagine him on the Rams or Pats.
Thoughts on Cam? I was suprised but it seeems like Blaine Gabbert was just as athletic...
Gabbert is certainly very athletic, but I wouldn't say he is in Newton's class in that department. But I do think he is the better prospect of the two knowing what I know about both. I would strongly consider Gabbert at #1 if I were Carolina.
Are the Bears more likely to fill their need for a WR in the draft or via free agency? Any names you think they may target?
I would worry more about the OL than WR if I were Chicago. And now DT is a pretty major need. Of course a true #1 WR would be nice-don't get me wrong-but I also don't see that guy right now who fits Martz's system to a T and is clearly better than a guy like Knox.
Thanks I see New England laughing and pointing at Minnesota this offseason. They gave us Moss for a 3rd pick and I think they are going to end up picking up Rice for nothing and giving Brady the big receiver he so desperately needs.
Sure seems like something NEng might do! Rice is a big time player.
When is the Wonderlic administered/results made public?
It has already been administered. But I don't think they ever make it public. However, it tends to leak...
The Rams have a lot of problems and I know Bradford has helped. What do you think the Rams Need to do at this years draft?
Adding a true #1 WR would be great, but again, I think many overblow that need for STL. I can live with the stable they have if they resign Clayton. I would LOVE to see Spags get his hands on a big time playmaking and versatile OLB to add to that D. I also want to see them add a backup for S-Jax in the mid rounds and another playmaker in the secondary could be needed. I know it isn't Josh McD's style to use a TE heavy, but considering the WRs as a whole and Bradford's development, adding a legit recieving TE could be useful-if McD would accomidate it.
Better 'stache - Burt Reynolds or Sam Elliott?
Sam. He was in Tombstone.
Matt, does bench pressing, vertical jumping and 40 times really get organizations to buy into a player? I think college game tape and the interviews are what really sets apart players/organizations who do those well...but I guess you won't be seeing Greg McElroy run an NFL offense...EVER!!!
No, I don't think the Combine numbers are a massive piece of the puzzle. I feel like they break ties on two very similar players though. Tape is king. No question. Interviews and learing a player's personality is also crucial. As for the Combine-the medical portion of it is #1 to me.
Matt to jump back on the Otogwe question how about that OJ in Buffalo?
Perhaps, but why would he want to go there? I also think Byrd is a good enough FS and Buff needs to use their resources on other areas of their team...to say the least.
Acoustic half of "GNR Lies" for under-the-weather background music?
No music on at all today. How sad is that? Just realized it when you brought that up too! Wow, I am pathetic.
Back to what you said about the Rams and getting a legit recieving TE, Bajima is a great TE. you think the rams will keep him?
I wouldn't say he is a great TE. He is okay. FAR from a difference maker.
MattDo you think Denver will take Peterson with 2nd overall pick
Amazing prospect, but I doubt it since Champ was signed. Gotta be a Front 7 guy like Dareus.
Will Raiders go after Sidney Rice if he's available
Doubtful. Not a speedster! And again-they have so many other things they need to deal with with their own Free Agents.
Matt, do you see the Dallas Cowboys making a comeback season and going to the playoff's with Jason Garret as coach, and the same players as last season.
I like where Dallas sits in terms of their roster. Their needs are big-but they are only in a few areas (OL and Secondary). I would bet they are aggressive to get things fixed.
Which of their 3 free agent ILB's -- Cooper, Burnett, Siler -- should San Diego resign.
Siler and Burnett are my favs of those three-and their skill set is most different. Complement one another very well.
Matt, What's the deal with Chris Williams OT of Bears. How did you grade him out of the draft and do you think he can turn it around as RT?
He has issues. Is he a true LT? That is his skill set, but he hasn't done well there. Isn't a pile mover at RT or OG. They seem to just be fitting him in wherever-and maybe that is how his career goes.
Which AFC South RB would you take - Arian, MJD, CJ or Addai (kidding on the last one)?
Johnson still. He went backwards this past season from the year before. But his interior run blocking really let him down in 2010. He is still the most dangerous. Not an easy call, but I still go with Johnson.
Can I really check my balance and see 80 mil?
Is there any truth to that? BIG number!
Of the 5 players on the Bears O-line how many do you feel they have to replace in order to see a significant improvement? Do Kreutz and Garza stay put and everyone else is gone?
No, I don't think it is that drastic. In fact, if they could add even one big time (nearly Pro Bowl caliber) starter just about anywhere on the OL, I think the other peices would fall into place well. I also think they are well coached up front, which goes a long way. RT looks like the biggest weakness-actually OT overall.
Matt when you were scouting were the players Pro days more important then the Combines?
Not really. Pro Days are much easier on the players. In their building. Slept in their bed the night before. Throwing to their WRs. Etc. If you screw up your Pro Day, I see that as a red flag.
If Carson Palmer really has $80mil in the bank, then he and his agent have done very well setting him up for the future after football and everyone else in the league should want his agent as theirs.
Got that right!
How much would a play-maker like Von Miller improve the Bengals' D?
Great prospect, but that isn't the direction I woudl would go. If they lose J Joseph, Peterson would be the perfect pick. Otherwhise, I would rather have a DT like Dareus or a DE like Quinn over the LB/DE tweener.
Which 2nd best at their position player do you like better: Julio Jones or Prince Akumara? Both seem like studs!
They do, but I prefer Jones of those two. Seems more athletic/fluid. Plays very hard. Great blocker.
Tommie Harris would be a good fit in Cle too no?
Maybe. They sure need 4-3 conversion help. And I do think Harris could surprise in the next stages of his career. But will a team doctor pass this guy to sign?
Why does no one consider dareus a real number 1 type prospect? The guy has been one of the best players in college football the past 2 years and was a big reason alabama won the national championship?
Totally agree. I don't understand that either. Played on a bad ankle all season too! 30 lbs heavier than Fairley. Amazing position versatility too. Extremely high on Dareus. Wouldn't get past #2 if it were me.
Matt I didnt see any news on hawk if they cut him do you think they should get martez wilson. Barnett cant stay healthy and brad chilliar is just a guy
But Bishop is a big time player. Well, that might be a bit extreme, but he played extremely well this past year. OLB is still the bigger Pack need.
What "backup" or "complementary" RB on a roster right now do you see as the best candidate this offseason or next to get tapped as a feature back for an acquiring team - a la Michael Turner, Priest Holmes (going way back) type scenarios.
Hmmm....I guess DeAngelo Williams doesn't really count. But I do like what Goodson brings-but he isn't leaving Carolina. Drawing a blank here on guys that fit that Turner mold.
what does Pitt do at 31? take highest rated CB or OL left on their board?
No doubt. Prob do the opposite at #63. Add one of each.
Daron in Boston. It might be a stretch after how he tested this past week, but if Justin Houston got to GB at 32, he'd be a really interesting guy. Matt, do you think Houston can play on 2 feet or is he just too big and needs to be a 4-3 DE?
Interesting fit indeed. Even if he just helps on passing downs opposite Matthews-could be a great value/contributor. I think he can play on 2 feet, but it will take some time.
How about Shanahan getting rid of Portis... again? What are the chances Portis goes back to Washington after he finds out no one will sign him as the featured back role he thinks he can still be?
Doubt he returns to Washington. Doubt there is much interest in Portis overall.
Love to see the Broncos go front 7 with their top 3 picks...could you see an Ayers or Caliborne falling to the 2nd?
Seems feasible. Such a deep DL draft, there will be value for Den early in round 2 to further help that front seven.
Matt, I like Michael Bush in FA this offseason as a possible feature guy that can carry the load, productively. Also Tashard Choice, Jerome Harrison, and the somewhat forgotten Derrick Ward.
Bush has a shot, although I still see him as more of a by-committee guy overall. Choice isn't a free agent, but I am high on him. Could carry the load.
How do you view LaGarrette Blount? More promising than Beanie Wells, Shonn Greene, Ryan Mathews?
No. Limited. Banger. But not a lot of elusiveness and very limited in the pass game. Also, his highlight tape is much better than his carry by carry tape. Was just a rook, but needs to learn to bring it on every carry.
Is Patrick Peterson the best player in the draft? If so, why doesn't he have a shot of going #1?
Not sure where the holes are in PP's game. So-I can't argue that he is the best (& safest) prospect. But Carolina just needs QB and DL so much more than CB. And-as great as he is, opposing Os can always throw away from him to take him out of the game. Not bashing him at all-but I would lean towards Gabbert or Dareus.
Jason Snelling... future #1 back?
Nah. Good player. Underrated RB skills. But a complementary guy.
Nick, off the top of my head. No corner has ever gone #1 overall. Is that right, anyone???? Charles Woodson wasn't 1-1, was he? Teams just perceive a greater need to fundamental success, and I agree, at other spots.
That is true. Again, can just throw at someone else.
Chances of Gabbert falling to Washington at #10? How do you think he'd fair under the coaching of the Shanahan's?
Really doubt it happens. Just too many teams in the Top 9 who need QB help.
What teams will be hurt the most by not being able to sign undrafted rookie FA?
The bad teams. The good teams don't have a ton of room to fit guys in on their roster. The bad teams need all the Quantity they can get.
Should Carolina look at maybe a Carson Palmer instead of using lst pick on a QB?
Depends on the cost. 3rd rounder
Matt, you say teams can just throw away from PP to take him out of the game which is very true. With that said, why would Denver not want the guy. Teams would then have to throw towards Champ and with Elvis back and if Ayers can step up they can address the front 7 starting in the second round.
I am SURE Denver would want PP. Who wouldn't? But their front seven just needs so much and it isn't like Dareus/Fairley are bad prospects either.
Why do I only talk about the NFL Draft when most teams after the draft will still be bad?
Not getting questions about other topics. Ask away.
Couldn't Ryan mallet be as good of a boom/bust prospect as Cam, at the price of a late 1st/early 2nd rounder?
Perhaps, but I just see huge weaknesses with Mallet-and I am just talking on the field. Not an improv guy. Needs the pocket to be perfect. Really needs to step into his throw with that exxaggerated delivery.
I read your take on felix jones do you think carmi can help open lanes and what happend to spencer this year
Carimi would be a great fit for Dallas at RT opposite Free. They had better lock up Free though pronto! No worries about Spencer.
Considering Palmer's poor performance and unending health questions why wouldn't Mike Brown want to get something for him? His skills have clearly diminished and with all the QB starved teams, seems like someone would overpay for his name.
I tend to think so too....but....but he really looked great in that late game vs. SD. Was that the first time Palmer has been healthy over the past 2 years? If so, I am intrigued. If that was an abberration, then I think he is done-which is what I have said for a while. But they know the answer to his health issues. I do not.
Browns, with the combine over, what player will drop to them now that wasnt there, and will it be offense or defensive player?
Their needs are just massive now. I think htey have to totally rebuild their Front 7 and their Passing Game. Those are big projects!
Who needs a field stretching WR the most: Ravens, Dolphins or Falcons?
All...but Baltimore. They are so slow at WR. And the need to unleash Flacco's arm.
Regarding Kevin Kolb suitors, you always hear Minn, SF, and Arizona. But why on earth would the Eagles send him to a conference opponent who seems to be just 1 QB away from contending? They knew the Skins werent just a QB away and thus made that deal, but this is different. I can only see him going to Seattle, Oakland, Miami, or Tennessee, if anywhere. You agree?
Good points. I doubt Oak gets involved. I just think those front 3 teams in which you mentioned would pay the most. Can't worry too much about where he goes if they pay the most to help Philly's roster.
I get your thinking about Greenway vs Rice and I do agree. Problem is, Rices agent, and the fact that he said he was testing FA no matter what.
Could be true, but how many Franchise Players actually leave town? Would get a ton of compensation in return if he were to leave then as well. Plus, I would still have picked Edwards over Greenway.
Good stuff as always folks. Do it next week!
