Hi everyone. We're in the middle of what will be a wild week in the NFL. The latest news: Vikings LB Chad Greenway has signed his franchise tag, meaning he won't be signing any offer sheets with another team whenever the market opens. Ok, let's get to your questions.
Would Viking have the patience to get McNabb, who might be released right before the start of the season or would they get an another veteran QB?
He should be at the top of their list if they decide to go the veteran route. At this point, whoever they get is going to be entering the season cold. McNabb is as equipped as anyone to handle that type of transition.
What NFC North Training Camps will you attend the Most in the Summer?
If they have them at all, I'll be at each camp for about three days. Big if, though.
Good afternoon Kevin, what do think will happen to Aj Hawk?
Hi Kimberly. It sure sounds like the Packers want him back. But he is going to have to do something with his contract, and that gives him a certain amount of leverage. I think they'll work it out, but I'm not sure when.
Do you expect the Vikings to try trade down unless Gabbert or another QB they desire to be there?
I wonder if they could still pick a good player at No. 12 and then make a trade if necessary to get one of the second-tier guys late in the first round or in the second.
If Sidney Rice ends up leaving through free agency, will that increase the chance of the Vikings keeping Ray Edwards?
Don't think it's related. Sure sounds like Edwards isn't coming back.
I would just like to remind everyone that the Green Bay Packers WON THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL!!!
They DID? Whoa. That's a huge story for the NFC North blog.
Hey Kevin need some bears insight, with Damion Woody being released and the unlikely event that the Raiders will be able or pursue to sign them and would woody, given his age, be an upgrade
I know it's fun to throw out those kinds of possibilities, but I'm not sure that Damien Woody is going to get the Bears very far. I'd rather see them work on this through the draft.
Hey Kevin never commented before but thought I would give it a shot. There has been a big fuss among lion fans about drafting Prince. With his good combine do you think it is out of the realm of possibility for the Lions to move up a few spots to nab him?
After today's 40 times -- he ran a 4.37 and a 4.44, unofficially -- I don't think there is any way he'll be available at No. 13 overall. They would have to trade up to get him.
Kevin, I listened to your podcast last evening, and thought what you said about the Vikings' QB situation made sense. Given that Childress is out of the picture now, might the combination of Frazier and Spielman be more willing to make a greater commitment to the QB position than in past years?
I don't think there is any question they are on the same page: They need to go out and get a young quarterback -- and maybe two.
Going to be on a conference call during this timeframe... but wanted to get this question in. I've heard the arguement that CBs aren't typically rated as highly in the draft as other positions (DE, DT), however I've also heard that a shutdown CB is the most coveted player on the Defensive side of the ball. Please set the record straight. I for one tend to side with Rex Ryan and would rather have Asomugha or Revis eliminating 1/4th of the field.
Cornerbacks are in the first tier of most sought-after positions.
Who's the most impressive physical specimen you've seen so far?
At the combine, I presume? Colorado OT Nate Solder is huge and has the frame to get a lot bigger. He measured at over 6-8 and 319 and looks like a tight end.
Hey Kevin! If the CBA negotiations get extended, does that mean the teams will be able to sign FA's and make trades under the old CBA guidlines?
No. It means we will have a continuation of the time when you can sign your own players. Free agency won't start until there is a CBA.
Is Von Miller a top 5 pick?
He put on a show at the combine and seems pretty close to that level.
Whats going on with Lions DE Cliff Avril? Are the Lions going to tender him as a RFA or will he be a UFA?
Actually, Adam Schefter just reported that they tendered him like an RFA -- he got a first- and third-round tender. But if the CBA goes like many think, Avril will be a UFA and this tender won't matter.
Kevin, I have another question and it is Do you see Daryn College being back with the Packers?
I would tend to think so, unless the Packers are desperate to get T.J. Lang into the starting lineup. I suppose he could be the left guard in 2011. But we haven't heard much on this issue so far.
If the player's union decertifies, my understanding is that players are free to negotiate on their own. Does that mean that individual players could decided to have contact with their teams during the offseason?
That is a little murky. Because the next step after decertification is expected to be a legal challenge by the owners, who would argue it is baseless, etc., etc. So we're likely in for some significant legal mumbo-jumbo before the intended result of decertification can occur.
Are you with the players side or the owners side of the agreement?
Honestly, I see things I agree with on both sides. There is almost never a right and wrong in these issues. It takes two to tango.
Kevin, can teams even trade draft picks during the draft this year? Isn't that like trading players? Like the Chargers and Giants did with Rivers and Manning.
They can trade picks, but not veteran players.
More appetizing? Mumbo-Jumbo or Yadda Yadda Yadda
I'm a big fan of gobbedly-gook.
Who is more productive next year, James Starks or Jahvid Best?
I'll have to file that away for a future "Have at It." But I'm going to say Best.
With the release of Tommie Harris and Daniel Manning turning down his six million dollar extension would the Bears use some of that new found money on free agency or would they reward Matt Forte with a new contact? Granted all of this depends on a new CBA deal...
I think Forte will get a deal at some point. And Manning might have been wise to turn down that deal. The Bears really want Major Wright to start next year.
Jake Locker in a Vikings uniform? Look in your crystal ball Kevin.
When it comes down to it, that might be the decision they have to make. People are still evaluating the combine, but Locker was probably the No. 3 QB prospect before it. That means he was most likely to be the highest-rated QB available at No. 12 overall, when the Vikings pick. Is he worth it? I'm guessing they won't take him at No. 12 but might trade back if they decide he's their guy.
Im a vikes fan and was wondering what off field issues or background that all the reporters are talking about makes mallet a bad choice for quaterback?
Fair question. There have been vague reports of drug use and character flaws. He seemed pretty immature during the media portion of the combine. That's all I've got for you.
Who do you think is the number one pick in the draft?
It's amazing. Usually by now we have a decent idea and it seems wide open. There is no obvious QB answer there, but that could change. Carolina certainly needs one. But it could be one of at least five or six guys, including several defensive linemen.
Kev: Maybe you know something I don't. What would the Bengals be looking for in return if they decide to trade me? Any chance this could involve the Vikings?
Educated guess: At least a first-round pick, and probably another pick in the third or fourth round. The Vikings would have to consider it, but the better answer would be to find a younger option.
If they would have told me that winning the Super Bowl gets me dates with Mila Kunis, I would have done this a long time ago.
I liked your response to Clay Matthews' tweet on that. (For those who didn't see it, Matthew asked Rodgers if he was dating Kunis. Rodgers said something like, "If by dating you mean meeting her for the first time last night, then yes.")
Do the Lions still believe Stafford is the guy? Any possibility they look at a QB, Mallett maybe?
No. They are definitely committed to him for 2011 and beyond.
What moves do you see the Bears making in the offseason to address their offensive line? Do you see them signing any free agents, or looking more toward the draft?
They need to start by re-signing Olin Kreutz. He held them together during transition last year, and they figure to have more transition in 2011. After that, I could see them drafting someone at No. 29 at any of the five positions.
If CB's P. Peterson & Prince Amukamara are gone by #13 and if WR AJ Green or WR J. Jones are avialable do the Lions go WR or do they reach for a CB or OLB?
They won't reach, that's for sure. But it would sure be ironic if the Lions drafted a WR in the first round, wouldn't it?
Kevin you didnt do a piece on the combine for players gb can get most of the nuggets was people out of our reach do you have combine info for gb.
Pretty similar to Chicago. When you're picking that far down, it's harder to project. But I came back with a lot of information in my notebook, and during the lockout we'll have plenty of quiet time to hash through all of that.
Gotta a toughie for you: best 5 DL in the division? Off the top, maybe Suh, Raji, Peppers, Williams Bros. in that order?
Good one. I'll go: Peppers, Suh, K. Williams, Allen, Raji.
In that order.
Does DaQuan Bowers remind you of Julius Peppers, or is that hype?
Not fair to either guy to make that comparison.
Kevin, Coach McCarthy has recently made some very strong, public statements in support of Bishop and Hawk. Not a word about Nick Barnett. Telling?
I thought so. I know some readers have been asking if Barnett could be moved to OLB, which I suppose is possible. But if someone is going to be the odd-man out, you would think it will be Barnett.
Would the Lions draft QB Jake Locker if for some reason he tumbled to them in the draft in the 3rd round like the Browns did with Colt McCoy? Even though I think its highly unlikely he falls like that but stranger things have happened
The Browns still had more of a need at QB than the Lions do. They had signed Jake Delhomme as a short-term answer.
Would Rice be the best FA wide receiver, ahead of Santonio/Malcom Floyd/Braylon?
Only question would be health. Sidney has had only one 16-game season and the hip surgery he had last year was significant.
Jake Locker never completed 60% of his passes in a full season in college. Go find me an elite QB in the last 25 years that you can say that about. The vikes would be reaching heavily to take Locker in the first.
That's the big issue. Historically, college QBs don't improve their accuracy in the NFL. They are what they are. You would have to hope Locker is the exception to the rule.
Is Raji the best 3-4 NT in the L, or does that mantle belong to Ngata?
Two different players, but Ngata is a bit more established. Raji really came on late last year.
Don't need to get into the big specifics with this Kevin, But the fact that the television companies are willing to pay the owners "a gobbedly-gook" amount of money, is that them saying they think the players will balk first? I can make reasons on both sides, just curious to what might be going through the TV Corps heads?
Well, the under-reported part of that issue is the NFL would have to pay back -- with interest -- the fees for games that were canceled. So it gives them a temporary slush fund, but the TV execs aren't permanently going to be out any money.
Is Cedric Griffin going to be ready for next season?
The Vikings don't know yet. From a timetable perspective, he's right on the edge.
Do you really think the Packers will let James Jones walk? All the talk of their 4 WR sets and overall depth, but they lose a lot if he goes. No replacements on the roster and Driver isn't getting any younger...
They typically are more aggressive signing their own players than those from other teams. But that said, how much money do you pay your No. 3-4 receivers? That's what the Packers would have to decide. Fortunately for them, there is no shortage of good WRs on the market.
So you don't think Jimmy Clausen will be given a chance to develop into Carolina's starter for the future?
I don't know. But you don't often have the No. 1 overall pick, and the chance to take any quarterback in the draft. Do you think they should pass on someone they think could be an All-Pro because they want to give Jimmy Clausen more time.
More passing yards in 2011? Rodgers / Cutler / Stafford
Based on the offenses, I will say Rodgers.
Any many other factors as well.
Is it true that the bears brought in a punter to compete with Maynard? What are they thinking? Maynard was again, solid all year. Do the bears need a new punter?
Maynard is a pending free agent. The Bears signed Richmond McGee, who has been in their camp for the past few years. It's not yet clear if they want Maynard back or not.
"Combine"??? Are you kidding me? What happened to the "off season"?
Truer to life than you might imagine.
Vikes fans/Seifert remember: Pack picked 2 quarterbacks in the draft a few years ago, 2nd round & 7th round. 7th round won. Remember Kevin?
By default, you should add. Brohm was horrendous.
With Harris gone I wouldn't be shocked if Angelo drafts a pass rushing DT with the 1st round pick, Liguet could be right there for the taking
Good call. They don't exactly have any interior playmakers on defense right now along the DL.
Will I still be released in April if there is a lockout?
Kevin a lot of experts have been saying that Tyron Smith, Nate Solder, Mike Pouncey, Anthony Castonzo, and Derek Sherrod all might be gone by the Bears first pick? Do you really think that all of them would be off the board at that point and if they were what direction would the Bears go?
It's possible, but the Bears' needs are wide enough that they could get a good value on one of the top guards in the draft at No. 29.
Is there bad blood between Sidney Rice and the Vikings, or is he just trying to get the most money available?
A little bit of both, I think. I think he really wanted a contract extension after his breakout year in 2009. You can argue whether he deserved one or not, but he didn't like coming back last season in the final year of his rookie deal.
Can you stop wasting time on stupid questions like "will the Lions take a WR in round 1 or draft a QB early"? Where do they go at #13 assuming Amukamara is not going to be there?
I can't rule out a WR. Mayhew has showed us multiple times he will take the best available player, regardless of position. Remember Brandon Pettigrew two years ago?
How do the labor negotiations affect my ability to consume the media with constant teasers about how I can still play?
You are savvier than any gag order that might apply during a labor negotiation. You'll figure it out.
"And many other factors as well"... I'm assuming that was a china doll reference. That was subtle... well played sir.
Actually not, but I'll take retroactive credit for it.
Is there a deadline for Zack Follet to make a decision on whether or not he is returning? I haven't really heard much on him since he went on IR.
With the labor negotiations ongoing, no. But my guess is the Lions will make that decision for him at some point.
What's the timeline for GB to release players, I noticed that teams are starting to do so and typically GB waits for as long as possible, just was curious under the current CBA when they would need to release guys likes Barnett, Brandon Jackson etc.
The deadline would be Thursday. No reason to do it before then if they don't want to. But Brandon Jackson is a pending free agent, so they don't have to make a move with him.
Seifert, who do you think you are critizing my draft picks, Brohm was a decoy.
Oh, I see.
If the Vikings don't take a QB with the #12 pick and colin kaepernick or christian ponder are both available in the 2nd round who do you think the Vikings take?
I bet Ponder.
The GB Packers books are open to the public and other teams are not...when a franchise such as the Packers is losing money does it not give some merit ot the owners arguement ?
Well, that's the point. The Packers aren't losing money. Their profits have decreased, but that's not the same thing.
Who wins in a fist fight among all NFC North coaches?
Ha! Usually the dirtiest guy wins any fight. But we have a pretty good collection of nice guys in this division. So I guess it would depend on who has the sharpest nails.
And I mean that in the nicest way possible.
% this lockout will actually happen. (How can the NFL actually let this happen!)
99.9 percent. What incentive does someone have to give in now when no one will start losing any real money until September, when the games would begin?
Is there a free agent out there who should expect a midnight visit from Jim Schwartz (whenever free agency begins)?
It sounds like they don't plan to being that active, if and when free agency begins.
Do you think the Vikings will enter the "Kevin Kolb Sweepstakes" if there is a free agency period?
They would be wise to investigate the availability of any starting-caliber QB.
You always take the guy wearing the biggest ring in a fist fight...McCarthy
Got a rhyme for you: aj hawk is gonna walk to allen pawk and with jimmy smith in the first round i smell playoffs. Yea. I went there
Oh, you went there alright.
Your right, my bad...but if a franchise such as GB is seeing the profits decrease I guess you have to assume it is worse for other franchises...correct?
That's the question we would all like answered, but those portions of the NFL books are not open. I'm going to guess the Packers are on the higher side because they earn a lot of local revenue from Lambeau Field, but no one knows for sure.
funniest player in the nfc north you cover?
Aaron Rodgers has a pretty dry sense of humor. Jared Allen's sense of humor is pretty over the top.
Wouldn't it be some nice revenge for the Pack to let James Jones walk and sign a big time WR, Sid Rice? It would be out of character but maybe possible with the history between the teams...?
Of course, Jones will probably have signed with the Vikings like all ex-Packers do.
Ok, a few more here.
If the Vikings move, will you stay our NFC North blogger? I'll let your wear the belt if you do
Maybe I could cover the NFC North from Venice Beach...
Draft question. Isn't it a particularly tough year to draft a QB in the first round? None of them stand out and doesn't the risk of no OTA's or training camps impose a bigger risk that they wouldn't be ready for this season, anyways?
I think that's a very valid point for the short-term. In the long-term, though, it doesn't matter as much. If you're in position to draft a guy that you think can be a 10-year starter, you do it, even if he will be set back in his rookie year by a lockout.
Can the NFL help the Vikings with thier stadium push by loaning them any money?
I am trying to get that question answered. I don't think they can make a loan before there is a new CBA.
Ok everyone, thanks so much. Chat with you next week!
