March 10, 12:00 PM ET
Chat with Keith Law

Klaw
  (12:04 PM)

Step up Poindexters, act smarter than you are - I'm 'bout to pull the Klawchat out the jar...

Tollbooth Willy (Mass Pike)

Are there Dunkin Donuts in AZ?

Klaw
  (12:05 PM)

There are. And the worst part is my daughter spotted them from the logo. I think we got her out of New England just in time.

Jake (Los Angeles)

Any idea on what's happened to Trevor Reckling? I wasn't a fan of the Angels starting him in AAA, but pretty much everything went wrong for him last year, even when he went back to AA. I don't think being rushed completely explains that.

Klaw
  (12:05 PM)

Velocity has regressed but he's also not finishing his pitches. I don't know if that's developmental or due to an underlying injury, but he's gone backwards since he first came on the radar and I agree that being rushed isn't the only explanation.

Vaughn (South Carolina)

If you are drafting this year and Bauer and Barnes fall to you, who do you take and why?

Klaw
  (12:06 PM)

Ask me next week after I see Bauer (Saturday) for the first time.

Rich (Bayonne, NJ)

Amidst the reputed improvement of Montero behind the plate, can he be a respectable, albeit not great, defensive catcher for the next few years until Sanchez bumps him to full time DH duty. Everyone who reports from Yankee camp are spouting the improvement, Klaw, I respect your opinion. Should I drink the Kool-Aid that he'll be passable back there?

Klaw
  (12:08 PM)

Said this on Twitter last night - I have heard quite the contrary, that he's the same behind the plate (that is, poor defensively, and unlikely to stay there based on that and his size) as he always was.

Moe (New York)

If Rendon was drafted today where does he go?

Klaw
  (12:08 PM)

Probably 1 or 2, unless there's something in his medicals to steer teams away. That's now two ankle injuries and a sore shoulder.

Aaron (Savannah)

Anyone playing for the Sandgnats (NYM affiliate) worth following this year?

Klaw
  (12:09 PM)

We should probably wait until they set the rosters first. Minor league ST games don't start until the 17th.

John (Austin, TX)

Klaw, I've read some stuff indicating that KC might start Hosmer at AAA this year. Do you think that's too aggressive given just 200 PAs in AA? Also, assuming he begins the year in Omaha do you expect him to see any time in KC this season? Thanks

Klaw
  (12:09 PM)

I don't think it's too aggressive especially since NW Arkansas plays as a great park for LH power hitters. Might not help him develop to go back there.

new orleans (jbrekel)

is john stilson a SP or RP at the next level?

Klaw
  (12:10 PM)

RP. Big stuff, plus FB plus CH, but reliever's delivery all the way.

Todd (WI)

Do you see Rickie Weeks as a candidate for a major regression this year? or should i be more worried about an injury?

Klaw
  (12:11 PM)

Injury. Skill set was always there for him to do what he did in 2010. Wouldn't shock me to see him repeat it or even improve on it.

Jack (Phoenix)

Have you gotten to see Michael Choice yet? I've read people raving about him on Twitter, and figured you'd be the one to ask.

Klaw
  (12:12 PM)

No, but I do enjoy the humor of those reports, as if Choice didn't exist last spring when BA and BP and I were all writing about him predraft. He is what he is - big power, pretty maxed out physically, going to swing and miss a ton.

Justin (Maine)

What player does Anthony Rendon compare to?

Klaw
  (12:13 PM)

Ceiling? Ryan Zimmerman-type production. (Not a physical comp - they look nothing alike.) Of course, Zimmerman never had the plate discipline he has now when he was in college.

Matt (NYC)

Keith,From a talent development standpoint, why are natural left handers categorically disallowed from playing 3B, SS, 2B and Catcher? It would seem that if you have a tremendous athletic talent, you shouldn't limit his value by limiting him to the outfield, 1B and pitching. I understand that a lefthander would have to 'pivot' to throw to first, but is that such a big deal? Let's say Troy Tulo wakes up tomorrow with the same exact skills, but he's now left handed. What do you do with him?

Klaw
  (12:14 PM)

A left-handed thrower with the arm to play C, 3b, or ss is going to end up on the mound.

Daniel (Los Angeles)

Keith, how good is Rubby de la Rosa? You described him as a "special arm" in your Top 100 capsules but do you think he has what it takes to be a frontline starter or do you see him more as a flamethrowing reliever/closer?

Klaw
  (12:14 PM)

Ceiling is starter but his secondary isn't close to ready.

Pat (MD)

Keith on twitter you mentioned Orioles prospect LJ Hoes has "questions around him". What are they specifically? Thanks.

Klaw
  (12:14 PM)

Lack of a position would be the main one.

mendel (fl)

The word on dominguez was a Gold glove caliber defense, but couldnt hit the side of the barns. a week in to spring training he leads all marlins in Hrs and RBIs. Do you think he can hit .250/15/50 while playing superb defense?

Klaw
  (12:16 PM)

More evidence for the 'spring training stats are meaningless' file. And, by the way, you're talking about a week's worth of games, so you have a small sample in games with wildly divergent calibers of competition (even within games - a major league pitcher in the 1st, an A-baller in the 8th) and differing effort levels.

Matt (Chicago)

For whatever it's worth, it sounds like Vitters has looked good so far. Have you seen/heard anything on him?

Klaw
  (12:16 PM)

Didn't play when I saw the Cubs - but, again, it's a tiny sample, and Vitters always *looks* good. One of the best swings I've ever seen. He just uses it early and often.

J.J. (NY)

Kay Law, what's the latest on the rumors surrounding the Mets being sold? I just got an email from a prince in Nigeria telling me he's going to give me $20,000,000 and I want to make a bid on part of the Mets.

Klaw
  (12:17 PM)

Take it my good friend

Brian (Rochester, NY)

Hi Keith, I've read a lot of good things from John Farrel reguarding Brett Lawrie. Do you see him starting the year with the Jays?

Klaw
  (12:17 PM)

Wait, a manager said good things about one of his own players? STOP THE PRESS

Alon (Broklyn, NY)

What's your take on Akeel Morris?

Klaw
  (12:18 PM)

Was my sleeper for the Mets this year.

Pete (FL)

The way the media has overblown and freaked out over PEDs why do you think they tend to ignore (for the most part) the seemingly increase in DUI/DWIs, especially this offseason.

Klaw
  (12:18 PM)

I have no idea. You'd think the one with the potential to kill people would get more attention and outrage.

BD (DC)

Rumors swirling of the Astros showing interest in Jesus Flores. What can the Nats expect back in return? Is Deshields Jr. a total pipe dream?

Klaw
  (12:18 PM)

Yes, with the fact that DD2 can't be traded yet only one of the reasons you need to wake up.

Joe (RI)

Manny Buenlos has been lights out for the Yankees so far, how long before he forces his way to the bigs?

Klaw
  (12:19 PM)

Midyear? I feel like this is Heyward/Atlanta all over again, where you might let the best interests of the club in the current season trump long-term considerations - and it's not like Banuelos has a ton of things to work on in the minors. If they gave him a rotation spot now I wouldn't argue.

Jim (Denver)

PEDs don't have the potential to kill people? Ken Caminiti would like a word. Oh wait, he's dead.

Klaw
  (12:20 PM)

He is dead - of a cocaine overdose. So, is cocaine now a PED, or are you arguing from ignorance?

Matt (MD)

better 17-yr old SS: Lindor or Profar?

Klaw
  (12:20 PM)

Lindor.

Steve (NY)

Klaw, sorry for the repeat asking. What is your take on the Joba situation? Are the Yankees crazy for not letting him start or might it be more complicated than that? A lot of Yankee fans respect your opinion and would like to hear you weigh in.

Klaw
  (12:21 PM)

I'd let him start rather than make him the 7th inning guy. The value differential between those roles is huge, and they have a much greater need in the rotation.

Daniel (Los Angeles)

I know you are pretty high on Carlos Martinez (52 on your Top 100). What about Tyrell Jenkins? Are you nearly as bullish on him as you are on Martinez?

Klaw
  (12:21 PM)

Loved him in the draft, just doesn't have the same now stuff as Martinez but has projection and athleticism.

Nick (Long Island, NY)

I know its only been a couple of weeks, but are there any players that have helped their draft stock in your eyes?

Klaw
  (12:23 PM)

Taylor Guerrieri might be the best HS RHP in the country now. Danny Hultzen, Blake Swihart, and Jed Bradley are rising. George Springer is sliding. Purke threw Sunday, was told he was "just OK" but the next few weeks will tell us a lot about where he should go - top 10, probably top 5 if healthy.

Paul (NJ)

Keith, would you have Sale or Thornton closing for the Sox?

Klaw
  (12:23 PM)

Doesn't matter - put those guys in the 8th and 9th and you'll have a lot of 7-inning games.

Jason (St Louis)

there was an article in the St Louis Post today comparing Brett Wallace and Zack Cox, saying how similar they are. That's way off base, right? Wallace only played 3rd one year and never looked the part and Cox is way more athletic. Other than looking at their stat lines, they have nothing in common, right?

Klaw
  (12:24 PM)

Cox is a better third baseman with more power and doesn't have Wallace's issue with the ball on the inner half. They are/were both big college performers whose lack of agility and speed scared some teams off.

Jason (St Louis)

Is this the new chat time?

Klaw
  (12:24 PM)

Only until your clocks change. Next week I should be back at 1 pm Eastern/10 am Pacific.

Joe (St. Pete)

Klaw, have you read any Franzen? I'm reading The Corrections now and can't put it down. It has great prose, and characters who are hilarious and heartbreaking, often at the same time. I'd be quite interested to hear your take.

Klaw
  (12:25 PM)

It's on my shelf. 240 pages to go in An American Tragedy right now.

Trey (San Diego)

Any hope for Brandon Wood?

Klaw
  (12:25 PM)

As an extra guy, sure. But that's about it.

BD (DC)

Never been on the receiving end of your snark before. Ouch. Should have realized DD Jr. can't be traded yet. What is the real value for a healthy Jesus Flores?

Klaw
  (12:26 PM)

Consider it an initiation. Pretty limited value because of lack of playing time and the medicals.

Seymour (Brooklyn)

Could Montero really be any worse behind the plate than Posada has been the last 2-3 seasons?

Klaw
  (12:26 PM)

Given the volume of complaints about Posada's defense of late, I'd think you'd want to aim higher.

Jim (Denver)

Fair enough. But the autopsy revealed Caminiti an enlarged heart, which studies show can be linked to steroid use. It's not completely ignorant to suggest steroids contributed to his death. But thanks for the insult, stay classy.

Klaw
  (12:27 PM)

You're welcome - after all, your initial question was the epitome of class.

Daniel (Los Angeles)

You called Drake Britton Jon Lester Lite in your Top 100 capsules. Do you think his ceiling as a starter is that high? Is his stuff that good?

Klaw
  (12:27 PM)

No, I was just BSing you. Come on, of course I think that's his ceiling.

Nick (Atlanta)

UGA's Zach Cone is eligible to be drafted again this year right? Where do you see him going/what kind of prospect is he?

Klaw
  (12:28 PM)

Big tools that don't play. Will see him this weekend so I'll get another look but I'm not optimistic. He's a player you want to like when you first see him, but the more you watch him play the more you realize how incredibly raw he is.

Ryan (Seattle)

Is this the year Derek Holland finally gets the opportunity to show he deserves to be in the Texas rotation?

Klaw
  (12:28 PM)

I'll say yes.

Matt (Boston)

How much of Springer's "struggles" can be attributed to the cold weather team not getting alot of time with the new bats? Dickerson in Indiana too.

Klaw
  (12:29 PM)

I've heard that explanation, but it reeks of an excuse in Springer's case - his mechanics have changed for the worse. That's not a function of the weather or of rust.

Brian (Milford, CT)

KLaw, Doesn't Jim in Denver realize the issue is that DUI kills OTHER people.

Klaw
  (12:29 PM)

Apparently not.

mendel (fl)

Even though none of them fit the "prospect" name anymore, but do you think a WS can be won with the Stanton, Morrison and Coghlan surrounding Hanley?

Klaw
  (12:30 PM)

I think that gets you much of the way toward a championship-caliber offense, but not all the way.

Matt (MD)

How far has springer fallen in your eyes based on his early season contact/swing problems? Is he this year's Micheal Choice?

Klaw
  (12:30 PM)

Way better tools than Choice. But Choice offered more probability and some safe harbor in an inferior draft class.

drew (philly)

What are your thoughts on Stetson Allie? About where would he rank in your top 150?

Klaw
  (12:31 PM)

In the 101-120 range. Big arm, command improved a lot last spring, but there's a lot of sentiment that he's going to end up a reliever. Could see him as a top 5 in the majors closer some day.

Chris Tillman (Baltimore)

Have you jumped off my bandwagon yet?

Klaw
  (12:31 PM)

One more year. Afraid if I jump now I'll just end up on the Island of Conclusions.

Mike (San Diego)

You seem to value Jaff Decker higher as a prospect than other talent evaluators, can they just not get past the body? Aside from the slow start last season, he has destroyed the low minors while being young for each league and controlling the strike zone. Too optimistic to think he gets a cup of coffee in September, and what should we expect from him in the bigs?

Klaw
  (12:33 PM)

You can't ignore the OBP skill - check out how much Daric Barton was worth last year based largely on that one skill. And Decker is a better athlete and more likely to play an outfield corner (has the arm for RF). I can't see a (healthy) scenario where he's not a valuable big leaguer.

Billy Jo (Arkansas)

Come on, where are the cooking and food questions? I don't come here to chat about sports! GET WITH IT!

Klaw
  (12:33 PM)

That's a switch. I'm backloading them (including Top Chef chatter).

mike (woodridge)

why do you take a question on PED's vs DUI's every week? do you just assume most people haven't seen your other chats?

Klaw
  (12:33 PM)

We do get a lot of newbies/non-regulars in here each week.

Kevin (San Diego)

Why do you like the Earl Weaver strategy of using young prospects out of the pen initially?

Klaw
  (12:34 PM)

Long relief specifically, which means pitchers can still work on developmental needs rather than getting outs at all costs. Plus it makes it easier to manage a pitcher's workload.

Gozer (Longmeadow, MA)

Your opinion counts with me, sir. Do you believe Jose Iglesias can hit .280/.350/.410 once he settles in at the MLB level?

Klaw
  (12:35 PM)

That seems like a far right-tail projection.

Andrew (SF)

Are you doing your annual breakout player article? ETA?

Klaw
  (12:35 PM)

Still undetermined. Don't have strong feelings on many guys this year.

Chris (Chicago)

What do I tell my buddies who gush over Spring Training boxscores? I understand the games are meaningless and the 18 year old prospect heading to A-ball that hits .500 over a week means nothing, but how do i get them to understand that?

Klaw
  (12:36 PM)

Look at previous years' spring training statistical leaders. I believe Gabe Gross led MLB in homers one spring in Toronto. How's that working out?

Max (Lake Charles, LA)

What are your thoughts on Mahtook so far this year? Do you think he projects as a CF?

Klaw
  (12:36 PM)

I do, and I think he's a solid first-rounder, good chance to go top 20. Sounds like he's passed Esposito on the college-bat rankings.

John (Cincinnati, Oh)

I am really fascinated by guys that get converted from position player to reliever. Guys like Sergio Santos or Kenley Jansen have incredible arms, why were they not started as pitchers in the first place? From a prospect point of view, how difficult are they to assess?

Klaw
  (12:37 PM)

I believe Stilson (in this year's draft) is a convert as well. The arm might have developed late, or the player wasn't interested in pitching until it became clear that there was money in it.

Shawn Spencer (CA)

What is your favorite of my sobriquets for Gus?

Klaw
  (12:37 PM)

Control-Alt-Delete. Just because it made no sense at all as a pseudonym.

Kevin (San Diego)

Any idea who the Pads will target with the #10 pick? Will they take a signability guy due to the fact that the pick isn't protected?

Klaw
  (12:38 PM)

They'll take a guy they know they can sign. Not the same as a signability guy (which would be a guy who'd sign at or more likely below slot).

Robert (St. Louis)

What do you think Jon Jay's future is in St. Louis? Will he eventually be an everyday player?

Klaw
  (12:39 PM)

Extra guy.

Mike (Philly)

I don't believe you had Derek Fisher in your top 50. Any thoughts on him?

Klaw
  (12:39 PM)

Tools guy, pretty raw, struggles against any kind of offspeed stuff. On the radar, though.

Clay (Charlotte)

Odds Ackley cracks the starting lineup this year?

Klaw
  (12:40 PM)

By end of year? 80% or better.

Bernie (DC)

Hi KLaw - I love what I've seen from Danny Espinosa at ST but I can't help feeling he should be at SS and Desmond at 2nd. What say you, sir?

Klaw
  (12:41 PM)

Agreed 100%.

Dan (Boston, MA)

Any lower level players in the Giants farm system to keep an eye on this year? Maybe a Chuckie Jones or Rafael Rodriguez?

Klaw
  (12:41 PM)

Ehire Adrianza.

Sage (Chicago)

My bachelor party is in New Orleans over jazz fest, 20 of us, any good eats suggestions?

Klaw
  (12:43 PM)

My NO eats recs are touristy - Acme, Pascal's Manale, Remoulade, CDM. Next time there I need to branch out more.

Wig (Philly)

Agree or disagree on the way the Phils doctored Dom Brown's stance/swing? I thought they took away all of his athleticism.

Klaw
  (12:43 PM)

Never got to see it.

Nate (Chicago)

Keith, your thoughts on Sox trying Viciedo in rigth field?

Klaw
  (12:44 PM)

Hey hey hey...

Reif (Denver)

Is a .270/.370/.440 line from Dexter Fowler possible this year?

Klaw
  (12:44 PM)

No, I'd be shocked if he got his OBP even close to that. As rough today as he was when I first saw him in AFL about three years ago.

Ryan (DSM)

Sorry I keep reposting this, I'm interested in your opinion. Royals fansites keep talking about this guy and I don't know much about him. Clint Robinson won the Texas League triple crown last year. Is he a prospect or just too old for AA?

Klaw
  (12:45 PM)

Old for AA.

Tim (STL)

Klaw,The scouting language article you wrote was extremely helpful. I had one question, though. Is control a prerequisite for command? Intuitively, it seems like a pitcher can't have good command without good control.

Klaw
  (12:46 PM)

A pitcher with control but not command seems like a hypothetical creature. That means he can throw strikes ... but doesn't want to?

Johnny (NYC)

Can Brad Boxberger stick as a starter, or is he destined for the pen? The Reds can afford not to rush him with their plethora of ML-ready young SP, but is it in vain?

Klaw
  (12:47 PM)

Reliever.

Griff Tannen (New York)

Hey Keith, Two questions: 1) How come you were not at the Sloan conference this past weekend? 2) Are the phillies in serious trouble with Utley out for most of the year (and with Brown out for 4-6 weeks)?

Klaw
  (12:48 PM)

1) Was working. It's kind of a busy time of year. 2) Serious trouble? No. But it's very good news for Atlanta.

Trevor (RI)

Control but not command --- Daisuke?

Klaw
  (12:49 PM)

He has control?

Bill K (Omaha, NE)

Is there any current prospect that reminds you of Blais on Top Chef? All talent, no confidence.

Klaw
  (12:50 PM)

False modesty? I find it hard to believe he hates everything he cooks. And I say that as a Blais fan.

Jarrod Parker (AZ)

My ceiling is pretty high, huh? P.S. Never eat Los Dos Molinos before a spring training outing, ouch.

Klaw
  (12:50 PM)

Very high. Hope they don't rush you.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

With St. Patrick's day coming up, have you ever made corned beef? Point or flat cut?

Klaw
  (12:50 PM)

I hate corned beef. If I'm going Irish I'd rather have bangers and mash.

Randy (Toronto)

You're way too critical of the Bautista deal. It's not like they are paying him as if he's a 50 hr guy. And if he hits 35+ bombs this year you now have to add two more years and another $40 million to the contract. AA had to make this deal now.

Klaw
  (12:51 PM)

I like how you treat the "35+ bombs this year" as fact, or at least the most likely outcome. As for "had to make this deal" ... unless you were holding the gun at his temple, no, he didn't.

Matt (Milwaukee)

What's the strangest question someone's asked you in one of these chats?

Klaw
  (12:52 PM)

Someone asked a few weeks ago if I knew the capital of Uruguay. A few years ago someone asked if I used hand towels or paper towels when cooking. Those would be the top 2.

Nick (Long Island, NY)

Has your opinion of Cory Vaughn changed at all after the season he had at Brooklyn last year? I know he isn't exactly young for the league but neither were guys like Bryce Brentz who flopped big time and you can't argue with the results.

Klaw
  (12:53 PM)

Sure I can - Vaughn was facing younger, inferior competition. I saw him in one game where he walked on four pitches that weren't even in the same ZIP code as the zone, then homered on an 85 or 86 mph fastball. Brentz' swing was a mess dating back to the spring; I'm not surprised at all that he was horrible.

Jay (DC)

Hi Klaw -- What do you mean by "reliever's delivery" (as opposed to a starter's delivery)? Thanks.

Klaw
  (12:54 PM)

A delivery that either won't hold up under a starter's workload or that can't be repeated to allow for average or better command.

ethan (denver)

you seen michael taylor yet this spring? has he made adjustments after last year's aberration?

Klaw
  (12:54 PM)

One at bat. Not good, but just one at bat.

Taylor (NYC)

Can you please save all the Top Chef questions until the end like you did last week? I DVR'ed it and haven't watched yet. Thank you.

Klaw
  (12:55 PM)

OK. But the spoiler-free zone ends here.

Paul (SF, Ca)

Thoughts on Carla getting cut last night? I mean sure she undercooked her pork, but Tiffany made a glorified Zataran's rice dish.

Klaw
  (12:56 PM)

I think if Carla's pork had been edible, Tiffany would have gone home. They have a history of sending home simple/unambitious dishes this late in a season, but Carla served them filet of trichinosis. Disappointed as a viewer, but I understood it based on what we saw.

Steve (Palo Alto)

Are you going to talk about Top Chef? Surprised Carla got bounced before Tiffany?

Klaw
  (12:57 PM)

It also validates what Colicchio always says (he's good about addressing stuff on Twitter) - you are judged on your latest dish.

Mat (VA)

I loved opening up the chat with a silly knock against New England. Arizona is certainly a bastion of progressive thought and high culture.

Klaw
  (12:58 PM)

Overreact much? Incidentally, Cartel Coffee Lab in Tempe is better than any local coffee I ever had in 15 years in New England.

Rich (Bayonne, NJ)

IN regards to your response to Jim "You're welcome - after all, your initial question was the epitome of class."... thanks for making me laugh heartily today!!! BTW, I am trying to learn how to cook for myself and when cooking fish in a pan, how do you determine when it's time to turn it over?

Klaw
  (12:59 PM)

Use a thin spatula (there is such a thing as a fish spatula, although it's not necessary) to check the underside for browning.

Scott (Akron)

You aren't the least bit embarrassed to admit you watch/have opinions on Top Chef? And if I were the person who admitted the DVR it I would use an alias.

Klaw
  (12:59 PM)

I would be embarrassed because...

Ryan (DC)

Not as good as my Keurig coffee K-cups.

Klaw
  (12:59 PM)

Blatant klawbaiting.

Zak (Jersey)

If you are judged on your latest dish then it seems like Antonia should have been sent packing.

Klaw
  (1:00 PM)

The funny thing about Antonia's dish is that I've had something extremely similar to it, in Nashville three or four years ago - and it was bad. The vinegar in the slaw ended up in the grits and ruined the whole dish.

Hank Scorpio (Cypress Creek)

There's been a lot of buzz from the Royals press and brass about Sal Perez being the sure-fire long term solution at catcher. What's your take? Thanks.

Klaw
  (1:00 PM)

No.

Andrew (NoVA)

Is there any way to make coffee without a French Press that's any good?

Klaw
  (1:00 PM)

Espresso.

joe (chicago)

Next board game on your list to pick up & try?

Klaw
  (1:01 PM)

Cargo Noir or 7 Wonders.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What's your favorite way to prepare asparagus? Grilled?

Klaw
  (1:01 PM)

Yes, or roasted in a very hot oven, served with buerre blanc (I'm not a big hollandaise guy, I know that makes me declasse).

Dave (Baltimore)

How do you stay in shape given your love of butter, eating out, and travel?

Klaw
  (1:02 PM)

I don't eat like that at every meal, and I am lucky to have a quick metabolism.

mike (cleveland)

Keith, is Lonnie Chisenhall the real deal at 3rd for the Indians? When do you think he makes it to big leagues?

Klaw
  (1:02 PM)

Midyear? Looks much, much better at the plate this spring - better at bats, better adjustments to offspeed. Last year he looked confused by any change of speeds.

John (Atlanta)

Arodys Vizcaino was clocked at 101mph in his last ST appearance. Do you think he can actually sustain that velocity, or do you think the gun was off?

Klaw
  (1:03 PM)

I'm not buying 101 - that is exceedingly rare. I would expect that his velo would tick up a lot in a short outing though.

Jason (St Louis)

I love all the people who come in here and complain about the content of the chat. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. Oh wait, we don't pay for this.

Klaw
  (1:04 PM)

My thoughts exactly.

Jake (St. Louis)

I'm close to finishing the USA trilogy (about 200 pages left). Next on my list is An Amerian Tragedy. Should I put some sort of buffer between those two, or do I just dive right in? Thanks

Klaw
  (1:04 PM)

I would read something fun in between them. You need a palate cleanser.

MDK (AZ)

Keith you ever come to Tucson? As a northeast native who has lived in NY and DC, I have to say that I'm surprisingly pleased with the quality of restaurants in this dusty little city in AZ.

Twice already this month. Went to 47 Scott for lunch last week - very good, above-average, and that's without giving bonus points for the cute waitress, who looked like a young Lisa Loeb but without the condescension.

Jamie (Canada)

What are the chances Chisenhall makes the club?

Klaw
  (1:05 PM)

I read - not sure who wrote it, possibly Jordan Bastian - that they told him before spring training he is not making the club. And I'm good with that.

Ray A. (San Francisco, CA)

Rendon is off to a really good start this season. Unless he drops off he is going to go No. 1 overall right?

Klaw
  (1:06 PM)

I don't think that's a lock at all, not with Cole out of the chute strong.

Adam (Minnesota)

What are your thoughts on Joe Benson? Does he have the ability to be a big league starter next year after Kubel and Cuddyer potentially look elsewhere for work?

Klaw
  (1:06 PM)

Needs to show he can recognize breaking stuff before I'll call him a big league starter.

Nick (Albuquerque)

I can never get my tortilla espanola to flip in the pan perfectly. It's too think to flip well like an omelette but doesn't cook in the oven like a quiche. Also, I recommend Egizia as far as newish board games go. It's quite similar to Stone Age but well designed and packaged, can play with 2 people.

Slide on to a plate, put the pan over the plate, then flip them together.

Pat (VA)

Thanks to your scout speak article my friends and I are rating girls in this speak. For example my buddy successfully bedded a girl last weekend who was "fringy". At least she wasn't "a guy"

Klaw
  (1:08 PM)

You act like you're the first to do that. For example, I thought Gail Simmons ticked up a full grade when we saw her with less makeup/simple hair last night.

CC (Atlanta )

Realistic line for Freddie Freeman this year assuming good health -- .270/.340 15HRs ?

Klaw
  (1:08 PM)

Sure, maybe a little low for him.

Chase (FL)

Mets' 2B Jordany Valdespin: non-prospect? I've heard some people praise his ability to hit the ball, but he clearly has no idea how to draw a walk.

Klaw
  (1:09 PM)

And he is WAY out in front - practically throws himself forward in the box. Not really a fan yet.

Jeff (NYC)

Did you see next week's Top Chef preview? Padma in a bikini = plus plus fastball.

Klaw
  (1:10 PM)

Big time. Mike's comment actually made me like him for the first time all year.

Andy (Fairless Hills)

If Duke is on the shelf for the beginning of the year (which at an 84 mph fastball, well could be), do you see the O's starting the year with Arrieta/Tillman, or do you think Britton has started to force their hand?

Klaw
  (1:10 PM)

I think they are determined to give Britton another few months in AAA. I'd rather see them commit to Tillman for most of the year anyway.

Wes (NC)

Do you think Netfali will be a starter this year? Is it worth it to have him come in pitch 6 great innings before passing it off to a weak bullpen without a sure thing for a closer?

Klaw
  (1:11 PM)

Yes, as long as he's on board with it. "Sure thing" closers are only marginally more valuable than unsure things.

Josh (Seattle)

A couple of James Paxton questions. How bad is the long layoff for his development? Also, I don't understand why the M's gave him first-round money when they finally signed him. What leverage does Paxton have? He hasn't pitched in two years and I can't imagine him going back into the draft. Thanks!

Klaw
  (1:12 PM)

Pretty bad. He would have just gone back in the draft again if they hadn't paid him - and I believe they knew the price, roughly, when they took him.

Rob (LA)

Why is Dee Gordon such a highly touted prospect when speed appears to be his only discernible skill? Plus he weighs 80 lbs.

Klaw
  (1:12 PM)

Speed, glove, arm, decent approach.

Jason (FLA)

I am going to be coaching my sons 7 year old basebal team this year, in your opinion what is the number one thing to stress when talking about fielding?

Klaw
  (1:13 PM)

Wear a cup.

Jeff (Bloomington)

Top Chef was terrible last night. It was a weed out episode bc they couldn't decide which chef to eliminate in the previous show. Having them cook on inferior equipment was an insult to fans of the show.

Klaw
  (1:14 PM)

Well, not one of the contestants figured out that something was up given that the Bahamas are not a monarchy? Unless they thought the Queen of England was coming.

Klaw

Time to wrap this up and head out to a game - probably Phoenix Muni today. Thanks for all the questions. I'll be back at the usual time next week.
