Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (1:04 PM)

HI all, thanks for being patient. Just settled in here in Tampa. Only 79 degrees right now. Sorry, had to. Makes up for multipl trips to edmonton! Anyway, Hawks are resting up (we hope) for tonights game. Tough one last night after great comeback...1st period did them in. We'll see if they can start a new streak. Fire away with questions...

Pete (Europe)

Will this team win tonight?Or will they be too tired from last nights game?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:06 PM)

Dont think its about being tired...get this stat I threw out there the other day...they are 24-4-4 over last 2 yrs in second game of back to backs...so they can do it...btw, that stat is sick. However, when a team breaks a winning or losing streak alot of the time it can go the otehr way for a few games..seen that a lot in nhl this yr...but opponent should get them up for it...huge test for D with that offense TB brings

Chris (Chicago)

Whats up with Nick Leddy? He has had a little bit of a rough go of it recently. Fatigue and inexperience playing a part in it?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:08 PM)

Pretty obvious. Hitting a wall. Hed be superman if he didnt. Actually its a good thing happening now. They are winning despite some down play from him so its not costing them games (at least not more than last night) and hes getting experience..thats huge for april/may. He'll need to get a second wind and I think he will...we'll see if minutes are limites like last night...of course puts more pressure on the vets but somjeone has to play!

Gvich (Old Town)

Are you gonna be at the White House on Friday?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:09 PM)

Yes I am. Not sure of all the procedures but hopefully can be tweeting things and going on espn 1000 at least at some point. @espnchihawks if you want to follow me at the white house and all the time for that matter...will blog about the experience afterwards as well.

Chris (Chicago)

Turco or Crawford tonight? What happened to Corey yesterday? I know you said give him a pass, but how can he say that they didnt play one of the worst periods of hockey this year last night? He was been awesome this year...keeping us in games in the 1st, winning games in the 3rd, but that statement definitely shows he needs to mature a little bit more...agreed?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:11 PM)

Im hearing Turco tonight...not 100 percent sure on that, only cause I didnt hear it from Q's mouth, but I usually dont get it wrong when I hear something...Yeah, for those that missed it, Crawford kind of downplayed how bad that first period was...not the first time a goaltender has been "out of touch" with the "momnet" or what not...Turco was kind of the same way in Dallas when they bew that lead...anyway, its the first time Craw hasnt seen it the right way and hey, hes not use to struggling so yeah, give him a pass...

RUSS K (VERMONT)

HEY JESS! Do you know who was taunting B Morrison after he was hurt and trying to get to the bench (during the last Calagary game)? Other than Scott I did not think there was a goon on this Hawks squad.........

Jesse Rogers
  (1:13 PM)

I do not..Its something that Ive havent had a chance to follow up with players on since it just came out...Q did not know anything about it...but will ask..prob a non-story but will ask

Josh (Lake Geneva)

If the Blackhawks maintain the 4 seed do you think the Blackhawks could make the semi finals even if they have to face The Canucks?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:13 PM)

Absolutely nothing would surprise me when it comes to the playoffs, especially this yr. nothing. thats the beauty of the sport

Curt (Chicago)

Do you see the Hawks trading away a big name player like Hossa or Hjalmarsson in the offseason to 1) get more role players and 2) clear cap space to give Sharpie an extension?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Im going to say yes though IM not sure that Hossa deal is really tradeable but you never know...Stan kind of made a point of saying he could see all 6 d-men they have now back next yr but Im not buying it...dont mean hes lying but when they sit down and examine all, just cant see paying 6 guys that much

Chris (Chicago)

What do you think of the NHL playoff commercials on NHL network? Toews has a pretty cool one

Jesse Rogers
  (1:17 PM)

yes, very cool. Was told the league sent out a note asking for home videos and the Hawks were like the first to respond sending in stuff of Toews family...his brother is in there too..good stuff...3 of first 4 involve hawks...will debut on tv this sunday during hawks/caps

Ryan (Barrie,CANADA)

Two Patrick's and a Toews, how funny would that show be?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:18 PM)

You like that video I did? Toews showing his fun side. Thats what I loved. Of course they liekd giving me SH## but hey, it was entertaining. Thats all that matters...goto my blog. the video is in there from the othe rday if you havent seen it.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:20 PM)

Some internet issues here in paradise. Shoule be fixed.

Pat (Chicago)

Any silver lining in the dominance the Hawks had in the final two periods last night?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:22 PM)

Yes. The fact they didnt just take the game off after getting down 3-0 and speoinding beach time, etc was a good sign...Fla had no answer...good to see they can still donminate when they need to...keeps confidence high but not so high they take more periods off...like they all said last night : Lesson learned

Ren (DC)

Wonder if I'll ever get this answered, but will Hendry be going to DC? Any updates on his surgery?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:23 PM)

I dont believe he is coming but I oculd be wrong..that was last I heard before the trip so could have changed..believe he goes for surgery like the 15th...know it hasnt happened yet...

Janice (Naperville)

Any update on Pisani? I thought I read he practiced with the team, but Q was sticking with the winning line-up. Is he okay to play or still experiencing concussion symptoms? (just trying to get a feel for the team's overall health status) Btw, your mentioning Sharp as having a 'hand/finger(?) issue' was news to me, yet not a surprise......felt he might be nursing something.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:24 PM)

Pisani is ready to go. Might even be in there tonight now that they lost one. Winning streak usually means not messing with the lineup..now with losing, thats why you see Turco going back in there so maybe on pisani...yes, sharp little hand issue..thinks it might be over but he had a couple games when he was a little off it looked like

Eric (Chicago)

Seems like Quenville downplayed the effect that no practice yesterday had on the game? What do you think? Maybe it threw off their mojo?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:28 PM)

He was adamant about it but doesnt mean he was right...tough call..they've done it before in Florida..I odnt know.I mean you are in florida..if there was ever a tinme to make sure they are awake on game day it would be yesterday and they did exactly the thing that would make you question not skating: had a bad start. would be diff if they finished poorly..so, you mkae the call..I guess if pinned down, Ill just go with the guy thats been doing it for so many yrs but still, coaches usually dont veer off routine during winning streak..anyway, its over

Dan Maloney (Under My Desk)

Jesse, with Jimmy Howard signing for around $2 million are those the numbers we'll be looking at with Crawford? 2-3 years in length?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:30 PM)

Very much up in the air but lets assume they dont win the cup than yes, no more that that I think for a multi year...if they go really far could very well go up...I would think higher end than lower, the way hes played but I also think they will show him more love than niemi last yr and he might take a little discount..he loves the goalie coach

Jason (Columbus OH)

How does Crawford respond tonight in your opinion after a very weak start last night?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:31 PM)

Just reiterating, Im hearing Turco is starting tonight

HAWKEYES (IOWA)

What will the newbies be doing while the rest of the team is at the White House? Will Frolik, Scott, etc just be playing Wii in a hotel all day?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

They get to come.

Matt (Crown point,In)

With Frolik playing much better is it possible that he might get moved up to hossa's line, I feel Bickel is to slow to be on that line

Jesse Rogers
  (1:33 PM)

Hmm...good question..maybe...but not yet. They need a real drought for Q to change things...hossa going well right now so dont mess with anything..bickell does his part...had a nice touch pass to bolland who fed hossa last night...not ready for any changes is my guess

Janice (Naperville)

Looking ahead at the schedule, I'm not happy with the Sharks game on Monday in Chicago as the team will have played the Caps on Sunday afternoon. Care to make any predictions on the next 3 games? (tonight, 3 days off, followed by the Caps and the Sharks)

Jesse Rogers
  (1:34 PM)

Hmm..tough ones...I say loss tonight..win sunday, maybe ot...ot loss monday.....

Joe (@ work)

Can you bring any of that sunshine back with you?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:34 PM)

Would love to, can barely see computer screen! :)

Ben (Argentina)

Hate to one up you, but it's 83 down here today. (Opposite seasons probably helps): Anywho, even though it seems unlikely, there's been the talk about bringing back all of our defensemen from this season for next year. Obviously moving Campbell's contract has proved to not be very inticing for other teams, but wouldn't it make more sense to shed some D salary to shore up the secondary scoring?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:37 PM)

I mean the answer is yes when it comes to campbell...yes, yes, yes,...the hawks would do it in a heartbeat...Ive mentioned this before and Im not really exagerating..standing trade offer out there for all teams for campbell...but since they are not getting takers, thats why there is TALK of all coming back...if they get a taker, hes gone and maybe the will this yr cause of his plus/minus..course he has limited no trade clause, etc. and hes getting married so he may not want to leave..who would?

Mike (Chicago)

Can the league possibly saddle the Hawks with the most back-to-backs again next season? That would be three in a row.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:38 PM)

Yeah, midwest team is always going to lead the league. pluses and minuses of being centraly located. thats one of the minuses...and they ALWAYS have travel in between..never back to back at home like some teams do...

JoeMan (Chicago)

Why isn't Campbell getting any flack for his mediocre numbers outside +/-? He's not worth that coin.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

First of all, he does get flack for his salary but hes having a decent yr. That plus/min is impressive. BUt I do think he should generate more offense...but maybe if he tries that plus/minus will go down...its not an insult to say hes a 3-4 mil dollar player...

Nick (Philadelphia)

Considering recent play and the 3 remaining games vs Detroit, do the Hawks have any real shot at catching the Wings and a 2 or 3 seed?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:42 PM)

Of course there is a chance but Im going to say no. I think the Hawks have one more lull in them..maybe last night started it or maybe it is yet to come...I could be wrong, I dont have a crystal ball but I think Det. had such a good lead they maintain

JoeMan (Chicago)

Do you see Turco being back next season?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:42 PM)

Nope. The back-up will be either a journeyman or someone from within making 500k or so

Kim (Chicago)

Did you have a chance to talk with Duncan Keith after last might's game? How much did his finger/hand injury bother him? Second game in a row he has gotten hammered along the board! The Hawks need him healthy.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:43 PM)

I did not. Sparse room...I will try tonight. They are staying overnight here I believe so they wont be running to cath the bus tonight. I will ask

Jay (Chicago)

Q said the third goal "cannot happen." Was he talking about Crawford letting it in or Campbell's ghastly turnover? I can't blame Crawford for that when the opposing player is right in front of him and takes a pass from Campbell.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:44 PM)

Hes simply talking about 6.9 seconds left in period. Just be smarter, Freeze the puck, ice it, fall on it, whatever...

Issey (Chicago)

Last night aside, do you think Crawford has made a strong case for the Calder?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:45 PM)

yes, but prob wont win it...skinner and coture are having big yrs. I can understand that . I think being a finalist would be great...still has a chance..needs another big month..maybe if the ycatch the iwngs behind him

dave (mpls,mn)

Jesse.Leading up to last nights game (or today) did anyone ask Q about Crawford getting tired, and what his response? thanks!

Jesse Rogers
  (1:46 PM)

Its been asked..basically he said he has seen no signs of it...but again, on a win streak you dont try to overthink things..now that they lost I absolutely think the decision to go with turco tonight is to give crow a breather...then hes off till sunday. nice breather

Jac (Chicago)

True or False: Marian Hossa is the blackhawks' x-factor (no, Jesse, please don't say its toews bc we all know we cant win in the PS without toews, but if hossa does well, the team will go far, if he doesnt, the team will not).

Jesse Rogers
  (1:48 PM)

I can live with that. There some goofy stat that when he gets a point or something they usually win..dont like those stats, cause kind of like saying if you score , you win...but its pretty obvious, hes like a first line player playing on a second line...teams cant defend toews line and his when both going well...thats the bottom line

mk (bg)

I know we had to start playing our best hockey in order to make playoffs (which is still not a given) but can we sustain this level through the end of the season and into the playoffs? Seems like a long time to play at such a high level.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:49 PM)

Yeah, thats why I say prob another lull somehwere in there..maybe just a small one but I think there will be one...could be even a few games in april...still more than a month to go..

Keith (Wisco)

Were you nervous interviewing Toews, Kane, & Sharp last week?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:51 PM)

That was just on Monday of this week...anyway, no. Though as we were waiting for Toews to sit down, Kane says to me "this will be good for you right?" I said, "Not really, it'll be good for you guys!" lol. anyway, Ill be nervous friday if I have to ask Obama about the economy...hockey players? nah...

your name John Schelling (Thunderbay Ontario Canada)

Eh Jr! You do a hell of a job covering the Blackhawks! Just wondering? Did You play? And if you did, what was the highest level played? & what position? and so on? Thanks JR! Say Hi To RJ

Jesse Rogers
  (1:53 PM)

I was an all-star...at the media game at 7 am on all-star sunday...not exactly the same thing..i did play..through club sport in college...high schoool was at GBN...who will take down New Trier for state championship this Sunday! You can go to the game btw, at the UC, or watch on tv..oh, played center...can still skate well but no moves anymore!

Mike (Chicago)

What is your take on forwards diving in front of shots from the point? It seems that only Ryan Johnson does it.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:56 PM)

Decent observation..Toews kind of mentioned that when Johnson returned to the lineup...you really only want certain guys doing it in the reg seaosn at least...wouldnt mind seeing a few more 3rd or 4th line guys do it...Ill give Hammer credit..he knew he wasnt having the best season, especially on offense so he made a committment to be Sopel this yr. Other guys not contributing as much could learn that lesson...help out in other ways even at expense of your body

joe (lincolwood)

have you learned anything about your craft from Joey the junior reporter?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:56 PM)

Anything? How about everything? He hasnt been turned down for an interview yet

Jeff (Chicago)

Jesse,Who do you hang out with while on the road? Just curious... Fellow writers? Broadcasters? Players?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:58 PM)

1) writers, 2) broadcaster, 3) players..players only when bumping into them...not anything planned..then you hang out and shoot the ####..Turco good for that..I mean, my man Buff isnt here anymore! Eddie O, etc always good for a laugh

Issey (Chicago)

Who would you hang out with on the road if you were on the team?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:58 PM)

One word: Kaner

Taylor (Loop)

If the salary cap goes up, is it possible to keep who we have?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

Im not going to do all the math until the season is over but right off the bat they should have like 6-7 mil between cap going up and bonuses coming off...so that helps..but if like kopy or brouwer come back they dont get much in rasies if any...brouwer has to but kopy is prob gone unless Hossa is his agent....

Tom (Chicago)

Do you see the Hawks committing to Crawford long term? Will he be in net for the next 4+ years? Will his ability to react to his poor night on Tuesday seal the deal one way or the other?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:00 PM)

First of all, youre kididng right? How he reacts to one game? I know youre kidding. But yes, I think he is the longterm guy..98 percent on that

Mike (Chesterton, IN)

There's been several times this year where an aggressive forecheck has give the Hawks' D-men trouble. Is this a weak point for this team?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

Great observation....calgary is at the top of the list...and yes, it is cause for concern...especially when you hear players like colorado forwards saying they know he D to D pass is coming and they sniff it out...sometihng to keep an eye on...

Mike (Rockford)

Can you remember when the Western Conference (or ANY Conference) was this close coming down to the playoffs? And how realistic is the Hart Trophy for Toews?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:03 PM)

No ,i cant. crazy. I think its building for Toews. He got hot at the right moment and with enough time left to really let it grow BUT he has to keep the production going...has to

Jack (Downers Grove)

Is there a curfew situation at the hotels the night before games, like an 8th grade DC trip with hall monitors and tape on the doors?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Ha! There is but Im not sure how much its enforced night to night....just never asked. I will

Joe (Indian Head Park)

Don't know if you ever answered this before, but who was your favorite Blackhawk growing up?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Obvious, Savy then Roenick

Alex (Illinois)

The Hawks have moved into fourth place in the West in the matter of a couple of weeks. Looking at the schedule, they will be playing a majority of teams in playoff contention in both conferences. With this schedule, do you see the Hawks keeping that spot in the playoffs or will they move up or down?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

I do. They have proven they can turn it on with the best of them...Always belived they were better than those 5-9 teams and now they showed it so its just abot maintaining, etc. Its not so bad...Still a lot against the east which is good for OT situations...last night would have been perfect chance to lose in ot but at least get a point

JoeMan (Chicago)

Do you see any of their top prospects being on the team next season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:07 PM)

I know Ive said it a bunch of times but Marcus Kruiger fron sweden has trhe best chance...d-men will be tough unless they move one..then maybe...maybe makarov and of course there is beach and morin...still think its the obvious ones with Kruger

Nate (Chicago)

Were you surprised that that no one responded after Keith got obliterated last night? Someone has to do something there.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:08 PM)

They got together...wasnt a fight but they went to him..not a big deal in my book...fight would have been nice..either way

Max (Madison)

I certainly wouldn't want to leave the Hawks! Speaking of a guy who seems like he wouldn't want to leave, what are the chances Patrick Sharp (recently married, seems to love Chicago) gives the Hawks a 'Andre Dawson-esque blank check' and stays long term?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:09 PM)

I could def see a little hometown discount but not a ton...

Jeff (Chicago)

Jesse,Are you pool-side right now? Please tell us the colors of the bikinis the ladies are wearing right now.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

That wouldnt be right...(cough) red, flowered, blue)d

Rich (Chicago)

Obviously hypothetical but would you trade Toews for Ovechkin right now?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

Not a chance

Brian (Minneapolis)

Stalbergs play has really picked up since Skille was moved, why? Also it seems to me that Sharp seems a bit gassed of late and is getting out backchecked by Kane. Is this Kane playing better D or Sharp getting worn out?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

Kane playing better for sure....Stalberg has accepted his role. thats the difference

Christina (Glenview)

Are any of the players for the cup who are no longer with the hawks making the trip to the white house?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

huet and sopel will be there...story yesterday in my blog.

Ren (DC)

What do the Hawks have planned for their DC trip besides visiting Walter Reed and the POTUS? Any chance they'll mingle with the locals?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

Smithsonian? I dont know...Would love to see kane taking in the sights though

Janice (Naperville)

Heard you mention on ESPN 1000 that Turco is probably starting tonight.....does his "style" scare you as much as it does me? (My daughter said we need a goalie bungee cord to keep him in net.)

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

In general , I would answer yes to that question

Erik (SF, CA)

Went to the Sharks game last night. Your man crush (Trotz) said hello.Question on RFA's. How does the first contract after an extry level deal work? Hawks have a few guys coming up. Is the follow up deal usually 1-2 years? What can we expect salary terms to be for Frolik, Stalberg, etc? I know you can't say for sure, but ballpark it....

Jesse Rogers
  (2:16 PM)

First of all I thought you were going to say Niemi but i do like Trotz...The next deal can be anything the sides agree upon OR they get an automatic raise (amount depends on a few factors) for a year and then go from there....thats what the term "qualifying offer" means. Usually they get "qualified" then the sides work something out longer term...but not alwyas...frolik and these guys, it just depends..they could say we will give you 5 yrs at less money per year or shorter term or maybe just the one year qualifier...its why tallon gets criticized...he wasnt "forced" to go too far with, say, bolland, and yet he did!

Jeff (Mokena)

Although they may not need him now... alot was talked about Morin helping the offense. Have you heard any talk about them bringing him up?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:16 PM)

No, but when Rockford season is over, if hes healthy I imagine he will be with the team like dowell, etc were last yr...might not play but there in case

Rich (Chicago)

Do all of the Hawks hang out or is it real clicky now?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

Def not clicky but they dont go like 20 guys together unless its a team function...Ive seen small and large groups

Jerry (Macomb)

Is there an incentive bonus in Toews' contract if he wins the Hart Trophy? If so, how much? Might be another salary cap concern for next year if he does.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

No bonuses after entry level deals until a player is 35 I believe...so no worries...

Gvich (Old Town)

Is Kane doing cannonballs off the diving board right now?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:18 PM)

Just had to post this one and laugh. Good one.

Rich (Chicago)

I know you have to play in 40 reg season games and 1 playoff game in order to get your name on the Stanley Cup, but did roster guys like Skille, Dowell, etc get rings too?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

yes...though I cant tell you every marginal guy did...but they were liberal with the rings

Rich (Chicago)

Do you think Roenick will get elected to the HHF in Toronto?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

If not, he'll talk his way in

nicholas (reynolds, il)

do you see Alexander Salak being the backup next year?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

I actually dont but thats not based on more than a gut feeling..i could be wrong...I think they will go out and get a veteran journeyman..at least it might be his to lose...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

few more..Im baking out here...

John (Indiana)

Does it scare you the way Turco goes behind net sometimes? I feel like he cuts it way to close a lot of the time. I just sit there and clinch up every time he leaves the net!

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

A little. He doesnt do it as much as he used to...Btw, Where are the critics to remind me I predicted double digit assists for Turco. Yeesh.

jordy (canada)

looking into next year, who is the better choice fourth line center- RJ or Dowell (and would you keep the other one as the 13th forward)?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:22 PM)

Im surprised Im saying this but I think i would go Johnson...

Kenny (Jefferson Park)

Other people than Rich would like questions answered too please! Will Toews go down as the best Blackhawk in history when he's done?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:23 PM)

Hmm....Screw it. yes

steve (north aurora)

what did you think of the hit by charra lastnight

Jesse Rogers
  (2:25 PM)

lets end with this cause I had a twitter war going on from ft. lauderdale airport this morn...I dont think it was that bad of hit...where it happened over anything caused the injury...feel really bad for the guy..but I compared to when Pisani got hit in dallas and his head snapped back because it was long the bench and there were no boards...player got 2-4 min and that was it...in a lot of ways that was a clean or NEAR clean hit by chara...interfence? sure..suspension? not in my book

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

Follow me on twitter @espnchihawks....if not for hockey then for white house stuff this fri. should be real interesting...turco in net tonight.you heard it hear first!..thanks for all the questions..check out my blog after the game and evreyday..should have an analysis video up there tomorrow from me...guessing will be very red looking after this chat...take care...tongiht should be interesting..they have so much more firepower than Fla. we'll see...thahkns again everyone...really enjoy these chats and talking hawks
