Welcome to a wet Thursday in Charlotte. No Cup or Nationwide this weekend, but a great Truck event at Darlington. Fire away.
When will Trevor Bayne win his very first Nationwide Series Race since he won the 53rd Daytona 500?
Let me look into my crystal ball. Kind of cloudy in there too.Look at it this way, Jimmie Johnson didn't do much on the Nationwide level and has won five straight Cup titles. Not saying Bayne will do the same, but he has told Wood Brothers he feels better in a Cup car than NW.
With Danica Patrick Finishing 4th in the Sam's Town 300 how close will she race in a Sprint Cup Race?
That's like going from single A baseball to the majors. She's got a long way to go in Nationwide before we start thinking she can succeed in Cup.
When was the Last time that a Driver has won Both the DRIVE4COPD 300 & the Daytona 500 in the Same Year?
Try google. I'd have to do the same thing. Or check out referenceracing.com.
Hi Dave...any chance Tony Stewart could have taken only 2 left tires on his last pit stop and won that race last week in Vegas?
He could have, but not sure how that would have impacted the handling of the car. He may have lost anyway. Bottom line, the mistake on pit road forced him and crew chief Darian Grubb to take chances on tires. They lost.
With Dale Jr. coming off two straight top-10 finishes as well as getting into the top-10 in points, where do you think Junior will be in points after bristol?
He was eighth I believe after last year's race. He's pretty good at Bristol, so if he can stay out of trouble there's no reason to believe he won't still be in the top 10.
David, do you know anymore to what happened with the airplane that Greg Biffle was riding in yesterday that caused it to have mechanical troubles while landing?
Not a lot of details other than the mechanical issues Biffle and his people mentioned. Getting dangerous to be in the air with somebody with Roush Fenway ties isn't it?
It's rather safe to assume Danica Patrick will be in NASCAR full-time in 2012, isn't it? Question now is, will she do a full year in Nationwide or jump straight to Cup full-time per GoDaddy's demands?
I believe she'll be fulltime in Cup with a partial Nationwide schedule, probably heavy on NW early as Montoya did in his first full Cup season. And you're right, a lot will depend on GoDaddy'com's investment.
Hello David, what's is the general consensus in the garage about JPM? what do the rest of the drivers think about him? and I am aware he is signed until the end of the year... what are the chances he stays with EGR or move on? why has nothing been said about a new deal?... thanks
Drivers respect Juan. How can't they. Yeah, he ticks some off from time to time, but who doesn't? As for EGR, he and Chip Ganassi are tight. I don't see them splitting.
David, has any team wrecked their hauler transporting their primary and back up cars en route to a race before?
I'm sure it's happened, but can't recall anything recently. Know the Furniture Row hauler was in a wreck last year but don't believe the cars were impacted. There was another incident a few years ago out west but believe the cars weren't impacted.
David - It is good to have the kids home during the break. Glad you are enjoying your time with your son. My daughters get home tomorrow, can't wait. I was listening to the 48 scanner for Las Vegas. Chad sounded confused after his call for 4 tires that put the 48 out of the top 10. JJ sure sounded frustrated with the last change. It is way to early to get down on the 48. Could it be that right now the 48 is doing the most "testing" on the track while the other teams establish the relationship between driver and CC?
Thanks on son. I wouldn't say the 48 is testing now. I know the Hendrick teams are branching out with different stuff and not all using the same setups as they might do more as the season goes on. JJ is just having a slow start, but trust me that team will be up to speed soon.
Does NASCAR or teams test drivers for concussions after violent crashes? Or is this an issue that doesn't even concern NASCAR officials, teams and drivers?
Drivers are tested and it is an issue of concern.
What do you think about Montoya's performance this year and what can we expect from him in the future ?
Like what I've seen. He had fast cars last year too but just ran into bad luck too many times to get in the Chase. Said before the season if he can avoid potholes he'll be strong.
Hi Newt, as Rowdy fans we are a little concerned about the Joe Gibbs Racing motors. What's going on? Is the problem the ethanol or are the engine builders just stretching it like Childress?
They tinkered with a few things after Hamlin fell short on fuel at Phoenix last season to improve gas mileage. When you gain in some areas you lose in others. Wouldn't say it's a concern, though. Long season.
If Kyle's engine didn't blow up at Vegas, Kyle would be leading in points. Do you think Gibbs can fix the problems and that Rowdy will win at Bristol?
Definitely believe JGR will fix anything that is wrong. Too good of an organization not to. As for Busch, he swept the weekend at Bristol last fall. No reason to think he won't be strong again.
Since the Trucks are front and center this weekend, who do you have for Darlington?
Last time Kasey Kahne was in a truck at Darlington he won. He's in a pretty good truck for Kyle Busch. I'll go with KK.
More Nascar rule inconsistencies! TonyS gets pit road penalty, race winner Carl Edwards does not (tire roll out of pit box). With all the video proof, perhaps it's time to use it in ruling when a race win is on the line (as NBA and NFL do).
Would have to double check, but believe because Edwards tire didn't get into exit route of cars outside the box but went into another box the rule is different.
Dale makes it sound like "running with Tony Jr and them guys" is something negative. Isn't the plan for Dale and Danica to be a 2 car team for Jr motorsports and them guys?
Don't think he meant it as a negative. But you have to admit anything from HMS is a step down. And the plan, according to Rick Hendrick, is to sign Dale Jr. to a long-term deal at Hendrick.
How come trucks and nationwide cars aren't racing at The Rock or Wilkesboro? This would get back to the core race fan in NC and be pretty good racing.
I agree, and hopefully we'll see that happen in the next few years. Love that Darlington has a stand-alone Truck event.
how come nascar does not fine Conway and Extenze for things detrimental to nascar.Stiffing two teams of sponsorship dollars.
If failure to pay on time were penalized there wouldn't be a full field in any series.
I've seen/heard comments that Knaus/Hendricks may re-evaluate grade of equipment they lease? or sell? to Stewart-Haas to stop their beating Hendricks. Therein lies the problem with these "sattelite" teams in Nascar! How can that be monitored/prevented by Nascar?
I wouldn't read anything into that. If Hendrick started giving inferior equipment to teams he leases to then he wouldn't be in business long.
Since Dale doesn't qualify for the All-Star race due you think they will make changes like the Hamburger Helper popularity contest winner gets in automatically?
Nope. He'll get voted in because he is the most popular driver on the planet. Or he'll win his way in.
The new duo of Brad Keslowski and Paul Wolfe is it too early to push the panic button? I thought they were suppose to come out of the gate swinging? Kurt is running good, what's the deal?
If I knew they'd pay me big bucks to fix things. It sometimes takes time to get the chemistry together. I would give them to mid-season before panicking, but you're right this isn't a good start.
When I look into my crystal ball, I see #winning
Surprised you can see your crystal ball.
Great article on Kurt! With all the top drivers in Cup who do you think could transfer over to NHRA and be a contender, like Stewart did when he transferred over from IRL?
From what I'm told Kurt is pretty good. Honestly, I believe most of those guys could succeed with good equipment.
Do you think its inevitable Kyle Busch will win a title someday? Or will his "I'd rather crash out and finish 43rd than finish 2nd" attitude prevent that forever.
I do. and I believe he'll make a strong run at it this year.
Can we expect to see the same type of racing (or lack thereof) on the other 1.5 mile tracks that we saw at Vegas last week? I don't think there were any passes for the lead under green except during green flag pit stops. On a restart once the leader got out front he just drove away and was never challenged.
I was wondering if anybody noticed after two exciting races at Daytona and Phoenix. Let's just say I hope that won't be the norm.
David, who is NASCAR's equivalent to Charlie Sheen?
I really have been thinking about this for a week. Mabye Robby Gordon after what we saw last weekend with Conway. Kind of has the same look as well. Who do you think it is. I'm open for suggestions. May even write a blog if you guys give me good material.
Coming up to Bristol do you think Gordon and some of those guys are worried about Kurt Busch having the shortest fuse in NASCAR?
Really, Kurt a short fuse? He may have a few years ago, but he's way beyond that.
Back at Martinville in Oct. when Kurt took care of business he said he didn't appreciate Gordon's "chicken moves". Is that something special on short tracks?
He was referring to the bump and run that Gordon used one too many times in Busch's opinion.
What do you see Victory Lane being like if Jr ever wins again? Think all the Hendrick guys would be there or let him have his time?
looks like martyville is gonna sellout.. just called to order tickets and they are pretty scarce.. must have something to do with gas prices and a crap economy...
That's great news. I have said for a few years that's the best race on the circuit. Love the old school feel of the track and community.
I was watching the in-car video of Rowdy battling Jimmie at Martinville where Rowdy is really steamed and Chad tells Jimmie to let him go and it occured to me that there are 2 Jimmie's. Is he like Mr. Nice guy off the track but turns into a different guy during the races?
Wouldn't say two guys, but Jimmie is more intense than most give him credit for inside the car. He just maintains control better than most.
Isn't it a little odd that Mark Martin has yet to race in an "old" 88 team chassis this season? Gordon, Johnson and Junior have already raced chassis's from last season. Rumor has it the "new" 5 team is working overtime building him new race cars for the season. Is there a problem with the way the 88 cars were built last year rendering them unuseable?
No problem with the way they were built. Most of the HMS cars are all built the same with the crew chiefs making changes after they get to them. Wouldn't believe all the rumors you hear.
So how many haters will be eating crow if Junior keeps this great start going this season? Its the second best start of his career...
There'll always be a long-line of haters no matter what Junior does.
david, i think you meant www.racing-reference.info
Yep, I did. Having issues with a pinched nerve and mind not straight.
Even though Brian France downplayed the TV ratings so far this year in his Q&A, he has to be fist pumping silently, no?
Probably, but remember the ratings still are below what they were in 2009 for the most part. And ratings don't always tell the entire story.
If Dale jr has to get into the All star race on a fan vote, doesn't that show how far he has fallen?
He can get in with a win as well. Not sure that is anymore of an indicator of how far he's falling anymore than his losing streak.
After Smoke made a mistake on pit road. Would he should have taken 4 tires on second to last pit stop and 2 tires on the last pit stop? If this happened, he would still finish 2nd, or worse, or he would have won the race with best car he had at Vegas?
He had to take two when he did to get track position back. He did the right thing. Just didn't work out.
how big would the impact be if jr didn't make the all star race. for nascar that is. keep up the great job!!!
It would be huge, but as I said in the blog it would be the biggest upset in NASCAR history if he didn't get the fan vote.
As someone that is sick of Jimmie Johnson winning. Do I need to worry about him winning this year?
Do you think Paul Menard will make a legitimate run at the chase, or fall off like last year?
Like what I've seen so far, but still believe he is a year or two from being a legit threat.
Great story on Kurt Busch racing in NHRA Pro Stock! Question, do you rate Kurt as one of those old school races like Foyt, Parnelli, Andretti who could race in be competitive in all kinds of race cars?
I do. Nice to see him branch out. And thanks.
Whats the status on Pikes Peak? Will Nationwide be going back there anytime soon?
Haven't heard, but would love it.
How soon til Bruton convinces NASCAR to switch the season finale from Homestead-Miami to Las Vegas? Not saying that the area doesn't have amenities, but NASCAR on FOX sounded like he's convinced them! And what do you think Kurt's chances are this weekend?
Bruton is stubborn, but so is NASCAR and they like having the event in South Florida. Believe there are a few more years left on the contract too. Talked to Roy Hill who trained Kurt. He wouldn't be surprised if Kurt made the finals.
What is the rock and wilksbooth? never heard of those places?
You need to google search and learn about the history of the sport. They are the roots of the sport.
NASCAR is still lame.
You really took the time in your day to say that?
If Dale didn't get automatically in the All Star race, he will have to race in Sprint Showdown. Am I correct?
Yep. Might be better for the track. Chance to see Dale Jr. in two races.
Last week Kurt said that his and Rowdy's dad, Tom Busch, works at Kyle Busch Motorsports "building rails". What was Kurt referring to?
Hi Dave...any chance Stewart could have taken only 2 left tires and won that race last week in Vegas?
If Darian Grubb thought that would work believe he would have tried it.
Hey David!!!! Is JPM been more conservative to start this year or just having better luck?? How do other drivers and teams feel about JPM in the garage? I knwo he was not too popular his first year or two in Sprint Cup.
I'll go with better luck. As I mentioned earlier he had fast cars a year ago.
Dave, my daughter graduated from Clemson. Now I don't know when I'll get back down south. I did enjoy visiting the different race shops when we were in the south.
Covered Clemson for a few years under the Danny Ford regime. Interesting and fun times. The race shops are cool to visit. Which one did you like best?
David..I was thinking Mayfield relating to Sheen. Suing everyone, got caught with drugs, accusing people of murder, and still has lots of money haha
All that is alleged now.
Does Kurt Busch stay a top the standings through the year? He looks to be very comfortable and is staying consistent.
Not sure Dodge good enough to keep him there, but Kurt definitely is. Will be interesting.
If the SHR cars keeps out running Hendrick cars, How long before Chad K screams bloody murder
Not the first time this has happened. Chad really isn't concerned with that. He's focused on getting his stuff better.
David, do think Jeff Burton has a legitimate shot of falling out of the top 35 in owners points, say if he gets caught up in a wreck at Bristol, and do you think he'd be able to rebound even if he had to qualify on speed?
Not really. And he's pretty good at Bristol.
How much money does Brian Keslowski burn through a weekend when he misses a race? Seems like such a huge waste of money. He shoudl go fund a team in Trucks.
West coast trips are pretty expensive as far as getting the cars there, particularly with gas prices. He doesn't stay at high-priced hotels. It's probably not as bad as you think, and he had a pretty good pay day at Daytona to supplement.
After Martinville in Oct. Gordon said, "Kurt Busch has a short fuse". Made it sound like he knew better than to mess with Kurt again.
He just knew Kurt was upset with him for repeated bumps.
Newt, How many more bad runs can Burton have and still have a chance at the Chase?
Good question. Wish I knew under this new points system. I can't imagine more than one or two more. Maybe not that.
I grew up a Senior fan. When the accident happened I started being a Junior fan. What is the problem/ why isn't he doing better? I am starting to look at him like I look at the Dallas Cowboys. No matter the strengths it seems like they always find a way to mess things up and end up losing.
Yeah, but the Cowboys have won a few titles along the way. Not sure anything is really wrong with Earnhardt. Maybe he's doing the best he can. Or maybe he hasnt' reached his full potential.
Why hasn't Kurt Busch returned the favor after Jimmie Johnson wrecking him multiple times seemingly purposely over the past few years? He's had chances but hasn't done it. Why would Jimmie even do that? He ruined many top 5 runs for Busch.
Sometimes the threat of getting even is just as big as getting even.
What do you think will happen when AJ takes the 43 to victory lane this year?
You'll see a similar reaction to what there was when Trevor Bayne took the Wood Brothers back to the winner's circle. No applauding in the press box, though.
Is Bob Osborne one of the most underrated crew chiefs in the garage?
Carl Edwards would pick him over anyone for sure. There are a few underrated crew chiefs. Just because you don't win the title doesn't mean you're not championship material.
If Jeff Burton does have to qualify on speed, will that pull resources away from the other RCR teams to make sure he gets back into contention?
Not really. And seriously, I wouldn't panic.
to the Jr worshipers: we've heard his "gonna run every lap ruthless" baloney before. If Jr ever wins another race then they can run their mouths.
Never thought he was ruthless.
Hey David,I was wondering now that Kentucky has Cup date do think Nashville and the Nashville Superspeedway could get date in the future on the Cup schedule??? I say so!!!
Do you see Kentucky having issues selling tickets? Row one seats are 70 bucks and they want $150 for pre race fan zone (where you cant do much of anything I might add). I know its the first race there but it is also a boring cookie cutter.
Not initially. People will come out curiosity.
Sure would love to see ESPN (or SPEED) produce a behind the scenes reality program similar to "Nascar 360" (about 8-9 yrs ago) that followed several drivers (Keven Harvick, Greg Biffel & ??). Would be interesting to see what they've accomplished since then, professionally and also personal projects (charities, Truck
Will pass that along.
Kyle Busch is the next dan marino, great stats, but no title, i guarantee it!
Guarantee makes you Joe Namath,right?
Has Ward Burton given up on a return to Nascar, with a focus of preparing his son for racing instead?
Please tell the Dale worshiping people that the reason loads of NASCAR fans don't appreciate him is because he has accomplished so little over the last 7 season and continues to get so much attention. In any other sport he would have been long gone. That's why.
NASCAR is different than most sports, and he's better than half the field so long gone is a stretch.
David, I think tis is the year where another team will do better than Hendrick...Who do you think will do it?
Roush or JGR.
caleb must have no life he probably watches soccer if he thinks nascar is lame
David what are the chances of Cup race and date getting to Nashville Superspeedway???
Not much. Over-saturated market already.
Oh now Dave, since I'm a big Junior fan, of course I enjoyed the JR Motorsports the best!
Who wins a race first: David Ragan or Dinger?
Do you find it curious that of the 3 ex-DEI drivers (Dale, Turex and Menard) that since DEI shut down, Paul Menard has become the most successful of that bunch?
I wouldn't say that. He's off to a fast start this year, but the other two are more successful.
Do you think guys will start racing different early in races until all the start and parkers stop, now that they have seen the impact a 3 or 4 point day can have?
Doubt it. Have you seen how wild things have been in the first three races?
Jeremy Mayfield is probably the closest thing NASCAR has/had to Charlie Sheen.
That's two votes for JM.
hey love the chats i was at the vegas race this past weekend loved them so is carl edwards for real? is so i think i just found my new driver!
He most definitely is for real.
David, you said Dodge might not be good enough to keep Kurt a top the standings, but clearly on three different tracks he finished in the top 10. Can you ask for much more? I'm a huge Dodge fan so don't bash it! Haha I'm proud to drive my Dodge Charger with that 22 on the back!
Not bashing it. Just saying others have more speed so far.
Hi David, any news on sponsorship for Kevin Harvick. I know he has 10 races to fill.
Is Brad the first driver to complain that the media gives Danica too much attention at their expense like he did via twitter?
Thanks Newt, you made me laugh with that "Dale hasn't reached his full potential", joke!
Do you know that where you click on the link for your chat, it just says NASCAR with Newton? Are you that famous that you only go by one name now? Like Cher or Madonna?
I wish. When people say Newton on ESPN it usually means Cam.
Why no applauding in the Press Box? At the same time we can hear DW root for Jr on TV every race. CAn we say double standard?
Wow, lots of anti Jr stuff today from the Kyle "cupless" crowd.
NASCAR is lot tougher than it looks, people need sit down and watch an ENTIRE race to really see what's going on before making stupid remarks....caleb
How has Menard been the most successful?!? LMFAO!!!
No argument here.
Hey Dave, we really appreciate the chats every week, thanks a ton!!!
Love them. and on that note I'm outta here. See you next week.
