Off week is over and ready to rumble at Bristol. Who do you like to win? Are you all picking Wofford to win the NCAA basketball tournament like me? Lots to talk about. Fire away.
Who was the last driver not running a full Sprint Cup Schedule to win a Sprint Cup Race prior to Trevor Bayne winning the Daytona 500?
I'd have to say Brad Keselowski at Talladega a couple of years ago when Edwards flipped. He was running partial Cup at the time he won.
While Kasey Kahne will be driving the #5 Chevrolet in 2012, Who do you think will drive for Team Red Bull in 2012?
Hard to say. I know they'll probably make a run at Carl Edwards, but that may be a tough sell unless Kasey proves the RB car to be championship caliber. Maybe Mark Martin will go there. Has Silly Season begun?
What does Jennifer Jo Cobb have to do in order to race in the 54th Daytona 500?
Do you want the smart aleck answer I am thinking of or the truth? Honestly, can't see it happening that fast.
Rough way to the week w/a loss in intramural b-ball can you give me a positive update on Carl and Biff's contract negotiations and how long does Ragan get before the axe falls?
Biffle's deal is in the final stages. Edwards likely will let this play out a bit before making a decision. No rush for him. He's a hot commodity and knows it. As for Ragan, sponsor UPS's deal ends after this season. Ragan has two more years left on his deal, but without a sponsor willing to commit there are outs for Roush Fenway.
Who do you think will win the Scott Easy 300 & the Jeff Byrd 500 at Bristol?
Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon. Did you think I would pick Kyle Busch to sweep again?
Will we see 2 women racing in the 54th Daytona 500?
I'd day Danica Patrick will be there. Beyond that it will be tough.
NASCAR seems like they have the whole labor relations topic down = no union. With the NFL lockout, and basically an unavoidable one in the NBA, do u think NASCAR executives are crossing fingers that just MAYBE they might be the #1 sport in the fall and can potentially earn its highest ratings & revenue?
Sure behind closed doors they are wishful, but no sport exec truly wants to see another sport struggle.
Hello. Think Nascar would have been wiser to have run Bristol last week and off this week to avoid battling NCAA for TV ratings?
I do, although they still would have been up against college basketball. The reason I say I do is because it's too early in the season to have a break in momentum.
Good afternoon David, do you think the 16 team will turn it around soon?
I do. And I expect some changes with that pit crew.
Thoughts on the Mcmurry Dixon swap today....
Nice way to drum up publicity.
Hi Newt, Ryan Newman, smart aleck or arrogant, egotistical and big headed?
I believe smart aleck. If I believed arrogant and egotistical I would have said so.
why cant race fans give jimmy johnson his due,the ones that dont to me are not real race fans.
Agreed, and you might start with spelling his name Jimmie. Lots of fans make the mistake.
When Newman drove at Penske, Rusty Wallace was co-owner of the team and Newman refused to share information and notes with Rusty's #2. Do you think Newman behaves the same way at SHR?
No I don't. And the information non-sharing you referred to worked both ways.
Newman hasn't really done much since 2003, with only 5 wins in the last 8 seasons and an avg. finish of 16.9. Do you think he will go down as sort of a Ricky Rudd level of driver?
No, Newman is still young and still capable of realing off five or so wins in a season.
do u think joey loganos slow start will affect him thought out the year
Heck yeah. Puts more pressure on him to perform if he has any hope of making the Chase. Pressure and youth don't always provide great results.
why doesnt talladega have nite race ,i think that would b one of the coolest races ever
No lights. No plans to put them in, either. It would be cool, but the campgrounds are crazy enough with a day race. Can't imagine it after a night race.
Who do you see as the class of the field on sunday? Im kinda hopin jj wins it!
JJ should be right there with Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Edwards and a few others.
Is Jr running saturdays race? Where do you think danica will be?
He is. And I think Danica will be in the wall. That's a tricky place to get around, and for a first-timer it will be tough staying out of trouble.
Im gonna try and make everyone of your chats from now on, thanks a lot for answering my question's last week....who do you have this weekend? And where will junior finish?
Thanks. Love to have regulars on here. I am going with Edwards on Saturday and Jeff Gordon on Sunday. Just a hunch on Gordon. And I believe Junior will make it three top-10s in a row. He's pretty good at Bristol.
If 3 drivers between 11-20 are tied for most wins (outside the top 10), only the 2 highest in points will get in correct? Or does it then go to most 2nd place finishes to break the tie? I have heard both but seen nothing that confirms what is done in case of a "Tied wild-card" situation.
Position in points first. After that I believe number of best finishes.
Tony Stewart seems to be getting off to a good start this year, how do you think he'll do this weekend at Bristol?
It's not his best track. He has a win, but only like eight top 10s in 24 tries. Not great.
Do you think Carl is gonna get even with Kyle? or even brad to even the score since the last bristol race?
I hope so. Need some drama.
Ok David - Your tweet regarding JG having way more followers than JJ hs prompted me to give you my theory why JJ is not more popular. My reason is that he ruined the fans party. After senior died the protagonist was supposed to be JG and the antagonist was to be Jr. They were expected to continue the battle that raged between JG and Senior. In 2002 along came JJ. The Jr fans hated him because he was JG's understudy and the JG fans tolerated him because he was JG's work in progress. The only problem is that JJ left JG in the dust. The Jr fans still hated him and the JG fans resented him. The result was that we had a champion without a fan base. The fans that did not want to follow JG or Jr. adopted Stewart, Harvicek, et al. leaving JJ with a void that only recently has been closing. JJ will never have the following that JG and Jr do, not because he is not the best, it is just that JJ came along 7 to 10 years too soon, and spoiled the NASCAR fan's party.
I get all that, but believe JJ has more fans than you give him credit and his followers will pick up once he gets a twitter name that he controls more than his PR department. People want to know they're talking to the driver like Harvick, Busch, Keselowski.
How good would Regan Smith be if he drove for Hendrick or Gibbs? I think he is one of the most underrated guys out there.
Interesting question. Definitely a top 20 driver, maybe top 15. You're right, he is underrated.
Wouldn't college football benifit from an NFL lockout? Who says NFL fans are NASCAR fans, especially the women?
Nobody said NFL fans were NASCAR fans, but I'm sure there is some overlap. As for college football, all sports would benefit if the lockout continued into the fall, which I don't believe will happen. Unfortunately, we all would suffer.
What do you think honestly the potential of MWR is? Do they have a real shot at growing into a consistent contender? It seems they're able to develop drivers to a certain extent, but have yet to have any real breakthroughs as far as showing the ability to keep up with the Big Boys (or even the not quite as big boys at Penske/EGR). Mikey can't sell himself forever as seen by not being able to keep a car for Bayne. (obviously though even now sponsors aren't lining up out the door for him even with the 500 win). So do you think that MWR has a real shot at being a consistent player at the Sprint Cup level?
I really expected more out of Martin Truex Jr. at this point and take the company to another level. No knock against what they are doing, but it'll be hard to catch Hendrick, Roush, Joe Gibbs Racing, Richard Childress Racing and even Earnhradt Ganassi and maybe Penske Racing with what I've seen so far.
With all the female drivers , how do the cope twins compare?
Best set of twins I've seen on the track. How's that for dodging the question.
If you recall Dale Jrs problems started after a car fire he was involved in. Since the fire he has lost his nerve to race. Your thoughts.
There are those that believe that to be true. I'm not one of them. But I do believe confidence has suffered and been a factor in performance.
Id like to hear your smart aleck answer to the Jen Jo question. My answer is she just needs a sponsor and some talent. Then she might have a shot to make it
You answer is pretty good.
Saw Nascar Now yesterday-why no mention of K. Kahne's win in the truck race; was disappointed in that. Who do you think will be his car sponsor next year in the 5 at Hendrick? Here UPS is staying with Ragan.
The show deals mostly with Cup is the main reason. As for UPS, where are you hearing this? I was hearing UPS to Kahne in 2012. Things change fast in this sport. But I do know UPS likes the way Ragan represents it everywhere but in the performance chart.
UConn for the sweep in both tourneys! Who breaks the Cup guys winning in NW and the truck series?
I'll give you the NCAA women's title. As for NW and Truck Series, I'm not sure we'll see a non-Cup driver win in NW all season, and perhaps not even in Trucks although Sadler and Hornaday could prove me wrong.
Better chances of Jr winning this weekend, or finishing 15th or worse with no accident/mechanical issues, this is one of his best tracks and he almost always comes home top 10.
How about the option of him finishing with a top-10. Your win or nothing proposal would force me to go with 15th or worse.
Do you think Brad and Emily will make it?
Not from what I've seen so far.
Jr basically has Kurt Buschs career stats, minus the Title. If his name was Frank Smith, would we put his career on the same level of that?
There definitely wouldn't be the attention and negative press Junior has taken.
If Montoya went on the open market (I doubt he would due to his relationship with Chip) do you think he'd have real (equal or better) options from other teams?
That's a good question. Since there aren't any openings at Hendrick or Joe Gibbs Racing, and I can't see Montoya driving at Roush or RCR, he's probably in the best situation.
How quickly do you think JGR can turn their engine problems around?
Fast. They have some of the best people in the business.
David, you seem fixated on the spelling of Jimmie (Jimmy) Johnson's name. Who cares?
His mother, father, probably Jimmie and his wife. Would you like me to call you Jon? Just kidding. But it is his name.
Do you think Danica will race in next years Daytona 500 or perhaps any sprint cup races this year?
I believe she'll be driving fulltime in Cup, and that if they get a deal done soon enough she'll be in a few races late this season.
do u think j logano is capable of making a comeback, he has had really fast cars at all the races soo for .just bad luck has hit him
I do, but he can't afford anymore major hiccups.
Why is "smart aleck" as you describe Newman, a likeable trait but if it was used to describe Kyle Busch, it would indicate immaturity and selfishness?
It's all in the manner the smart aleck attitude is portrayed. And I don't think Kyle is a smart aleck in an immature or selfish way.
Do think sponsorship $'s are going to hold back a few Nationwide drivers from making it to the Cup? Who do you think sits in that position right now?
It'll make it tougher. Trevor Bayne is a great example. He won the Daytona 500 and can't get enough sponsorship to run a full Cup schedule. Heck, he was sponsorless the week after the 500.
Do you expect Rowdy, Carl, Harvick and the really fast guys to lap Dale jr-even multiple times-in the NW race?
Nope. Dale Jr. is pretty good at Bristol and he has a fast car, or should.
I'm a Josh Wise fan. I know he has a few races lined up in the 7 when Danica is gone, or is it more than a few? I wish he got the 88 instead of Aric (who needs to get better results I might add)
Honestly, can't remember how many Josh will be in. As for Aric, I believe he was the right choice but I'm surprised he hasn't shown more thus far.
Who do you think will have the best career out of Edwards, Kyle and Denny Hamlin? They are all fairly young and have a lot of wins already.
Interesting. Either one of those could win multiple titles. Edwards has come the closest and is off to a great start this year, but I'll stick with Kyle. His raw talent has to rise to the top soon.
Weight is a big deal in cups cars correct ? So if a team can find a way to drop 20-30lbs off the overall weight of the car, that's a positive thing correct ? Do you think that has anything to do with Stewart's strong start ? If he has dropped 20lbs, that has to count for something in regards to the overall weight of the car
Weight is a big deal, but it's pretty much adjusted to be the same for every team based on the driver's weight. And Stewart is a two-time champ. If his weight loss is a factor, it's that he's in better shape and driving better.
Do you think Kyle is gonna get even with Harvick, Reutiman and Brad or even Joey getting even with Harvick or Vickers getting even with Kenseth?
As I said earlier, it would make for a fun weekend. Not sure I see it happening, though.
Who in your opinion is the nicest 2 or 3 drivers as far as dealing fans and media
Lots to pick from. Can't say two or three are any nicer than the top 10. I will toss out Gordon, Johnson, Edwards, Burton, Regan Smith to name a few.
Any panic at RCR or are they biding their time until the season goes along?
No panic, but they have to hope some of the bad luck that has bitten them early is in the rear view mirror. Burton in particular can't afford another horrific finish.
Please, no questions longer than 1 sentence.
do you think j.g. is jelous of jj
Not of JJ, but of his success. And in a motivating way.
I like Frank's post, but Jimmie does have a good following now, and he does have the great "love him or hate him" thing with fans. I think he just needs more time to settle in people's conciousness. A true nickname would help! Mr Perfect? Ringmaster?
Reading JJ on twitter is quite funny. Seems like a regular guy with a great sense of humor. The fan that grabbed DoubleJ48, was he looking for $'s and is that why they didn't get it back?
You are right, JJ is a funny regular guy. Not sure what the motivation was of the DoubleJ48 fan on Twitter. Doubt JJ would pay for it back.
While we are all looking forward to payback this weekend I do have a question. Since it appears that because of the points it is more difficult than ever to rebound from a bad race, do you think the drivers will be more cautious about payback?
If they are the ones needing to make up points I'm sure it will have an impact. If they aren't worried about points then the temptation could become reality.
Who do you think will have a bad day on saturday and sunday? THe proverbial Dud so to speak?
This is a different way of looking at the world. Danica will have a bad day on Saturday, and David Ragan will fall flat on Sunday.
Anyone who's been to an NFL or college game or basketball sees way more African Americans and Latinos but not in NASCAR.
That is true. Hopefully one day it will level out.
So David, have you come to a conclusion as to who is the Charlie Sheen of NASCAR yet?
I have. Robby Gordon.
What do you think of Menard? I have been very impressed with him (especially this year, and even through the end of last year), but it seems like he's never going to get past the idea that Daddy bought him the ride. What's it going to take to be seen as the driver (and personality) he is and not just the name on the car?
I'd say a good place to start would be winning a few races and making the Chase.
Who would you cast as the main drivers if you were producing a NASCAR movie? I open this up to your other posters too. Andrew Garfield as Jeff Gordon, anyone?
I need my wife for help on this one. She knows the names of actors. I just remember faces.
If Dale jr has lost his nerve to race as John suggests doesn't he owe it to himself, his family, his sponsors and his team to retire, immediately?
I didn't say I agreed with John that Dale Jr. has lost his nerve. Losing confidence is different. It happens to most athletes at some point. But I don't see Junior in a hopeless situation.
Are there any drivers that are so renowned for being unfriendly with the media that you all tend to stay away from them?
Or at least avoid asking questions for fear of having it thrown in our face? Might be, but I'm not saying it. If I have a question for a driver I'll ask regardless.
Are there any young up and coming black, asian or hispanic drivers in the lower series right now that we can look out for?
By lower series, I assume you mean below the NW and Truck Series. Darrell Wallace comes to mind first. The issue is are there any top organizations willing to take a chance?
Do you think Danica Patrick will ever win a race at the Sprint Cup level?
Never say never.
Hello David, Will we see RCR begin to turn it around soon????? I expected them to maintain their performance from last season. And it's not Menard's fault.
Bristol is a good track for RCR, and I agree it's not Menard's fault. Just bad luck.
What are some other sports teams the cup drivers support that we may not know about (we all know Jr loves the Redskins, for example).
Denny Hamlin is a big Bobcats supporter, Jeff Gordon loves the U.S. Open in tennis. Plenty more.
Why don't we ever hear excuses for lack of performance like lost his nerve, needs confidence, crew chief, communication etc. about other drivers but only about Dale jr?
Because the focus isn't on them like it is on Junior. The fans created it.
Here is a fun stat showing the combination of experience and success in the top NASCAR teams. It is simply ?WPD? ? wins per driver. All I did is take the total career wins and divide them by the drivers in each organization. The imbalance between Hendrick and the rest is amazing, as of the start of the season:Hendrick: 48.25Roush: 13RCR: 13Gibbs: 12Penske: 7.33Even once Kasey Kahne comes over to HMS and replaces Mark Martin, their WPD would only go down to 41. This is surely a historically great stable of drivers they have assembled!
Math gives me a headache. But thanks for the fun stats. Like it.
No Nationwide regulars winning this season? What about under-talked-about Reed Sorenson? He's leading the points and no one even mentioned him as a contender before the season started.
I'd wager Sadler wins before Sorenson.
so how good do you thing with danica patrick geting a good start this year compare do last year and this year she has a kind of a coach helping her like johnny benson and she is in the top ten in the points right now.
It's like most things, the more you do it the better you get. She's more comfortable now and has a better understanding of the cars and the tracks. If she didn't improve then that would be a red flag.
What do you think about E. Sadler so far. I really expected him to run much better than he has. Hes had some decent finishes. But I kinda expected him to be racing for the wins. Do you think KHI is a little off right now
I expected more as well, but he's had some misfortune. I expect he'll shoot up there before long.
Elliott Sadler is driving full time in KHI equipment in the NW series. No wins for the entire season?
I said Elliott would be one that I could see breaking the streak.
Who are some of the best 'information relay' drivers, as far as breaking down the car to their crew chiefs effectively?
Johnson has to be at the top or near it. Biffle is really good. Edwards is. They all are pretty good.
Hey Newton, Bristol no longer sells out, yet their cheapest Cup ticket is still $95 with fees. Conversely, I already have great Turn 4 seats for Martinsville, which now has better racing than Bristol, at $45 each. Why haven't Bristol tickets dropped in price to coincide with the lack of demand?
That would be a question for Bristol, but if I were a fan I'd go to Martinsville if the tickets prices were close. At that difference it's a no-brainer.
David, with all the UPS talk between the 5 and the 6, if Bayne ends in the 6 you think UPS sticks with the 6?
That might change things if a deal hasn't already been made under the table.
You story on Newman today made me think he would be a better owner than a driver, sort of like Childress was. Do you see that in Newman's future?
Not sure ownership is something Newman is interested in, at least on the Cup level. But he is smart and I'm sure would do a great job running a team.
Jyhn in Chxrlotssvillx does not seem to care about spelling.
Burton, Logano, Biff....all sit just above 35. 2 more weeks of what has happened to them and they are in big trouble. Any big names going to drop bellow the yellow line?
Don't see any of them falling out of the top 35, but you're right two more bad weeks could be disastrous. We're all learning how this new points system will play out.
I am totally neutral on Junior as a fan, but I think it would be great for the exposure of the sport if he could win a championship. Ultimately, I fear that Jimmie has raised the bar in a way that Junior may never reach, as far as fitness, diet, etc. Junior seems a bit more old school in his approach, whereas drivers are increasingly having the mindset of athletes.
Can't argue with anything you say.
Why do you media types love to ignore Reed Sorenson??? Ignored pre-season to content for the title. And not giving him a chance to win a race this season. What gives?
They give us a pill before the season that makes us that way. Heck, I don't know. Maybe we just don't think he'll win the title.
do you thing that jr good start this year was it be cause he just need a new crew chef or what you thought.
Like I've been telling people, Junior was in the top 10 in points a year ago after Bristol. It's a long season. I like what I've seen so far, but too early to say it's all in the crew chief.
I would agree with your view on MWR and Truex, Jr. I felt he was on the verge when they signed him and that they had made the proper steps forward up to that point. Somewhere in there the wheels seemed to start spinning. Just a response to your response here.
My response to your response is thanks for your response.
How can Smith be that underrated? He technically has been in a mix of some of the best out there for years now. between RCR/ECR and Hendrick support that team should be in the top 20 easy even top 15. I know they are a one car team from CO but they have the equipment.
Equipment, but not all the support that goes with it. No way to compare his organization with the others you mentioned.
what is your take on some of the big names in nascar early this year struggling do you thing becuse of the new rules or do you thing it is because of the point system.
It's because they haven't performed or had bad luck. Nothing more.
any new on brandon mcreynolds
If Elliott Sadler can't win in the NW series with good equipment, his racing career is over, don't you think?
Wouldn't be a good sign.
Kurt had the Bristol day race won last year, chances of him getting it done this weekend?
You're right, he had it won. He's one of the best on that track and should be a factor this weekend.
What would you consider to be underrated rivalries in NASCAR? I think Martin-Gordon an B. Labonte-Gordon in he late 90s, early 2000s are two. Seems like they battled up front a lot back then.
They did, but there wasn't the bad guy-good guy thing that makes rivalries heat up.
I miss Kurt Busch's aggressiveness he displayed a few years ago, is he better off now with his mellow attitude?
It was fun to watch wasn't it? Not sure the lack of it has hurt him though.
Other than road courses, what track or tracks separate drivers from riders?
You gotto add Mark Martin to the nice to fans list!
I like this Dayved Knewtson chat!
Welcome nhoj. John spelled backwards in case you missed it. On that note I have to bug out. Hope you have a great rest of the week. See you at Bristol.
Sorry, had to add that. March Madness I love.
