Hey Pat it has been a while. Just wanted to stop by and wish you and your family all the best. Hope all is well.
Steiny, where have you been??? You used to dominate these chats. Good to see you back. All right, we're up and running. Fire away with the questions.
Assuming that Carolina does trade Steve Smith, what kind of compensation would they probably receive?
Think Panthers would at least like to get second-round pick for him. Possible that they can get that. At worst, I'd say a third-round pick.
In response to the NFL lockout I have not paid for my season tickets for next year and told the Buccaneers that I will not be paying my invoice until the day the lockout is over, I was told that I must pay or my tickets will be sold, I explained that I guess just as the "NFL" and it's players are taking a stand, SO AM I and it will hurt me to do this more than "them" but I will stand firm and not pay if they are in a "lockout".During this process I realized that "we" the fans who buy $4,000 season tix, and merchandise that helps pay the BILLIONS are really the ones who should protest. I say we should protest the first week of the season!! Whenever they decide how to split up the BILLIONS, if not one fan showed to any stadium the first game of the season ,then they would feel the power of the heart of the fans !
I salute you for taking that stand. I've got a feeling their still will be lots of season tickets available when the lockout is over.
true or false, Cody Grimm was the bucs BEST draft pick last year????
I'd go with you, if it wasn't for Mike Williams. That pick worked out pretty nicely too.
Pat, could you try to convince me that trading Steve Smith is a good idea? I can't think of a situation where trading the best WR on an already stale offense could work to their advantage. Will this actually happen?
New coach, new QB might mean time for a fresh start for all involved.
Do you think the falcons should keep Norwood for a low rate and who do you think will be a break out player this year for the birds?
No, let Norwood walk and draft a speed back. Norwood's been hurt way too much. For breakout player, I'll go with Peria Jerry. Ran a blog item on him yesterday and Smith and Dimitroff are expecting big things from him this year.
Afternoon, Pat. I've read in a few places the Bucs need another RB in case Blount goes down. What about Kregg Lumpkin? He was basically invisible last season, do the Bucs see him as a contributor in future, or will he end up getting shipped out?
Think they probably will look for an upgrade.
Hey Pat,new dad here... should me and my 3 day old daughter start getting excited to watch Hard Knocks: Buccaneers edition?
Congrats!!! Well, it's not a done deal, but they've been talking and some within the Bucs really seem to want to do it.
Hey Pat, why do you think that the bucs dont draft players from the university of South Florida? they are a talented program on the rise, who are playing against elite programs. I figured it would be beneficial considering the players are already familiar with the field and the weather. (i.e. tyrone mckenzie, who will surprize many this season for the bucs)
No doubt USF is a program on the rise. Bucs keep a close eye on the Bulls. They did bring in the USF QB for some workouts last season. As USF continues to grow, I suspect you'll see more of their players end up with Bucs.
So I was wondering, if (and hopefully it wont happen) there is still a lockout by the time the season is supposed starts, what happens to the schedule? Like, lets say the Bucs were supposed to play the Panthers on week 1, but the lockout ends on week 6, and thats when the Bucs were supposed to play the Saints, would the season's schedule start back from week one (so the Bucs would play the Panthers), and just go in that order, or would it pick up at week 6 (so the Bucs would play the Saints) and move on from there? Or would a whole new season schedule be reconstructed tofit the shortened season?
I honestly haven't heard what the league plans to do in that situation. But let's just hope this thing gets resolved before we get to September.
Pat knowing that you are a huge College Basketball fan.Who do you have for Tonight UNC or Marquette ?Thanks
Umm, I'm really not a huge college basketball fan. I'll watch a game here and there and watched Florida/BYU last night. But I really don't have a favorite team and didn't fill out a bracket this year.
What kind of production should we Atlanta Falcons fans expect from Peria Jerry this upcoming season in order for him not to be considered a bust? (Personally, I think Jerry has all the ability and potential to explode this season)
He needs to become a solid starter. If he can get back to what he was supposed to be coming out of college, I think he and Babineaux can be a very good DT tandem.
One one the big holes that Carolina need to fix is the O-Line. I think they need to upgrade the RG. They also get better depth at T because Otah has been hurt both years he's been in the league. Your thoughts?
They think Otah's going to be healthy and they also have high hopes for Duke Robinson.
pat, any dates set on the schedule release?
No exact date, but sometime around mid-April is what I heard at league meeting.
Have the comp picks been announced yet? And if so what did the Panthers get?
Up until the moment I signed onto the chat, no compensatory picks had been announced. There have been some reports that they're coming today. As soon as I get them, I'll post item on blog. Panthers are hoping they get a third, sixth and seventh.
If the NFL season doesn't occur will I remain in the same order for next year?
I don't know. Run over to the NFL office and ask. You're in the neighborhood. They're on Park Avenue.
Is Pierre Thomas the answer at RB, or should the Saints draft someone such as Williams or LeShoure in the first round?
A healthy Pierre Thomas is a pretty good RB. But we all saw the importance of depth at RB for the Saints last year. Don't know that it will be in first round, but think there is a good chance Saints take RB somewhere in draft.
Pat, I thought the study that said the Panthers are the least loyal fan base was stupid, first, it is based on a year to year basis, thus this study go the Panthers at the worst time, second, the criteria works against them, one is history, something the Panthers have very little of. Third, fans still show up, Panthers are the longest team in the division without a blackout.
I agree. As I said in my blog post, the Panthers might be struggling right now. But I know many fans in the Carolinas (and elsewhere) and know that they're extremely loyal to the Panthers.
Hey Pat is there any chance of replacement players if the lockout doesn't get resolved? I would be under the impression that since the owners are locking the players out and the players aren't striking then they can't bring replacement players in.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said the other day that there hasn't been any talking of replacement players and he doesn't anticipate that changing.
Do you see Chauncey Davis' role with the Falcons increasing or is he just insurance? What's the deal with Lawrence Sidbury? Thought he had the potential to start...
Davis is just insurance. Sidbury's still got a shot. They've liked his athleticism from the start, but wanted him to add a little bulk and learn the defense. Think this could be the year you start to see more of him.
I know fans want the NFL to talk about it (especially Bucs fans), but was there any talk at the owners meeting this past week about changing the blackout rule?
No. They had their hands full with labor stuff.
Hey Pat, what can Falcons fans expect from new QB's coach, Bob Bratkowski and how he will help to furhter develop Matt Ryan?
Tell you what, I asked Mike Smith about that very matter a few days ago and have the answer transcribed. I will do a blog post on it next week, so keep an eye out.
Pat, you said you have an idea what the Panther's are expecting for comp picks, how about the Bucs?
A seventh-round pick, if anything. Panthers are only division team with much at stake when it comes to comp picks.
Should I park my boat home and get the eye paint ready?
Remember the movie. Actually, I thought it was a pretty bad movie.
At what point will the NFL start losing fans because of this lockout? Has it already happened? I was more excited about last year's draft for the Panthers than this year due to the "unknowns"
I don't know. You guys tell me. Seems like interest is still good. We've got a lot of people in here today. I suspect that will continue through the draft. After that, I'm thinking fans might start getting really frustrated.
Gene Hackman doesn't make bad movies.
Loved him in Hoosiers. But not "The Replacements".
Why didn't Charles Johnson get a vote in the best pass rusher list. I think he at least deserved a vote. I know he had one good season, but that didn't stop Peyton Hillis getting votes at RB or Chris Long getting a vote a DE, who by the way, has less sacks in his career than Johnson and had less than Johnson this year. In fact, I bet most of your colleagues don't even know who Charles Johnson is Pat.
One good season, like you said. I gave Johnson strong consideration, but didn't put him on my ballot. Main reason is, I'd like to see him do it again. If he does, then he's on my ballot next year.
Could you see the Saints giving Charles Brown a shot at LT this season and possibly moving Bushrod over to RT? Stinchcomb doesn't look as capable as he once was.
Think Brown definitely gets a long look at LT in training camp. If he shows some promise, they could think about moving Bushrod over to other side or just keeping him as a backup for both tackle spots.
Pat, any chance the Bucs try to get a verteran QB as a backup to Freeman?
I'd like to see that. But my impression is that Raheem likes Josh Johnson a lot, so I don't think anything will happen.
How possible is it for Tiki to come to Tampa?
I'd say very unlikely. But, until he signs elsewhere, there still will be speculation about Tampa because of the Ronde angel.
Do you think Mike Goodson has the potential to become a star?
Star might be too strong. But I think he can be a very nice complementary player.
Any news on players scheduling private training sessions in light of the lockout (like Freeman and Williams did last year)?
I'll have something along those lines next week. Big group of NFL players, a few from the NFC South, are working out somewhere relatively close to me in Florida. It's kind of cool because there are guys from a lot of different teams and they've got a former NFL coach working with them.
Tiki to saints??...Payton had him in NY..
That one's not impossible. Saints have shown willingness to bring in older players and Payton has some history of bringing in guys he previously coached.
Bigger offseason need for the Falcons: WR or left tackle?
I put DE ahead of both of them. After that, it would be LT and WR. Might even want to throw in an OLB too.
Where do you see Eric Norwood fitting in next year? I feel that he has a lot of potential and could contribute a lot more in the pass rush next year, especially with Rivera coming in who seems to use LBs as pass rushers pretty often
Yep, lots of raw talent there. Think you could see him start to emerge this year.
Pat, last year during the draft, why do you think that Carolina took Armanti Edwards instead of Jordan Shipley. I think he would have helped us out more?
I think the local angle played a role. But I'm not ready to write Armanti off just yet. I think Fox's refusal to embrace youth movement was why Edwards rarely got on field last year. Think Rivera is going to throw young guys out there and see who rises up.
Training camp question...if there is one...will the Panthers still be in Spartanburg? Wasn't their contract with Wofford up this year?
It will be in Spartanburg, if camp starts at normal time. Believe they extended the contract last year. If memory is correct, I think it was a five-year extension. I'm happy because there is nothing quite like "The Burg". Just hoping my knees are ready to play a little basketball in Wofford's gym.
Do you think Gettis and LaFell were the best rookie receivers in the division outside of Mike Williams last year.
Yeah, think that's safe to say. Only other rookie I can think of was Arrelious Benn and he didn't do a lot before getting hurt.
Is Chase Daniel a solid #2 or do you see the Saints bringing in another vet in as insurance?
Well, they went through last season with Chase as No. 2 so they must be pretty comfortable with him.
Any idea on the style of offense the Panthers will run next year?
Yeah, they're actually going to try to have a passing game this season! Seriously, it will look a lot like San Diego's system. The only thing missing is Philip Rivers.
What do you think about every team in your division having a QB that is conversation worthy? Could the NFC South be the best QB division?
If Panthers can get a QB, yes. The other three already are franchise guys.
ok pat the fate of the organization lies in your hands who do you take with #1 pick Newton or Gabbert?
Personally, I take Gabbert. Newton has more upside, but also has more downside. Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd sign or trade for a veteran and look for long-term QB in future. But I'm thinking more and more that they're going to draft a QB.
Could you give me a player from each team in the division whom is poised for a "breakout" season? My vote for the Saints would definitely have to be Jimmy Graham.
We generally do that as part of our season-preview package. Usually runs in late August or early September. But, yes, I definitely agree with you on Graham.
Does Sean Weatherspoon have defensive mvp of the year talent? Are Thomas DeCoud and William Moore long-term answers for the Falcons? I think William has more upside than Thomas.
Weatherspoon's got to stay healthy and on the field and start making some plays before we even get to that conversation. I think Falcons are high on DeCoud and Moore. DeCoud might already be as good as he's going to get. Moore still has plenty of upside.
Any chance Matt Moore has a future with the Panthers? Also, what happened to him last year?
Think Matt had his chance with Panthers, however brief, and it's time for him to move on. I think he can be a decent backup somewhere.
Other than the fact that Goodell told Arthur Blank that Atlanta needed a new stadium to host a Super Bowl, why are trying to get a new outdoor stadium. The Georgia Dome is an excellent facility and most fans that I know really like it. Why not just renovate and expand on the GA Dome?
You'd have to ask Mr. Blank that question. But I think he wants an open-air stadium and a place with more suites because that means more money. I understand the question, though, because the Georgia Dome is a good facility.
You don't like Gabbert?
I like Gabbert better than Newton. But I'm not totally sold on either one.
Honestly, can we expect Kerry Meir to eventually be an even more productive starter than Jenkins in the near future. I thinks he is a guy that will make a few spectacular plays here and there, but no starter. We need a playmaker at WR! Thanks Pat.
You're still going to get a speed WR at some point and Harry Douglas is still in the mix. They want a productive slot guy. Meier is a completely different type of player.
Bro,Long time avid reader of your blog. Come to these chats pretty often, ask questions, and they never get answered. Pretty annoying. Would be cool if you could answer one, for once.Thanks.Any chance the Falcons could swing a deal to get A.J. Green? What would it take?Do you think it would be worth it?
You're getting answered this time. Sorry, but the questions come in very fast and I can't hit them all. Falcons would probably have to move into top 10 or top 15 to do that. It would be pretty tough to move up that high.
How do you feel about Bucs vs. Packers to open the season on Thursday night? Two youngest teams in the league loaded with talent? May be a good way to kick off the season.
Would not rule it out and Bucs will get a prime-time game or two. But not sure they get opener in Lambeau. Think that will go to either Saints or Bears.
Pat why are the Panthers not giving Ryan Mallet a look, I think he is a better QB watched the combine and he was making all the throws
They are giving him a look. They've been at his workouts and I'm pretty sure he's coming in for a private visit.
Rather than worry about the risks involved with either qb and assuming the panthers can't trade the pick should the team just take Patrick Peterson?
Makes some sense because lots of people say Peterson is best player in the draft. But I think his stock dipped a bit with the Panthers when he said he doesn't want to return kicks.
Hey Pat, Any chances AE gets a shot at QB for the panthers at training camp( if there is one)? Or has that ship sailed??? tired of everyone calling him a bust when he never had a chance.
Armanti Edwards? No, no chance of him at QB. They drafted him as a receiver and return man. They haven't given up on him. He'll get a fresh start with new coaching staff.
Favorite football movie?
"All the Right Moves". "Friday Night Lights" is a close second, but the movie and the tv show weren't as good as the book. Two more questions before we finish.
Think the "I dont want to return kicks" comment from Peterson matters less now that the kickoff line moved, or is the Panthers concern more about a guy who may not be willing to do anything for his team?
I think you pretty much nailed it with the latter part of your note.
CBA are you for the players or owners? By the way did you read Bill Simmons column about the CBA issue. good article
Not for or against either. It's not like I have anything at stake in their argument. Just hope they can work it out sooner rather than later.
You've done enough Pat. It's past 2:00 and it's a Friday
If Calvin says it's time to go, then it's time to go. Thanks to all for stopping by. Enoyed it, as always.
