Chat with Nick Friedell

ESPN Chicago
  (1:02 PM)

Welcome to this week's Bulls chat. Nick will be along shortly after he finishes his segment on "The Waddle & Silvy Show." Keep the questions coming and Nick should be here around 12:10.

Nick Friedell
  (1:15 PM)

What's going on everybody? I'm coming at you live from the Berto Center. Let's get this chat rolling ...

Eric (Freeport)

Does Kyle Korver even like hot sauce?

Nick Friedell
  (1:16 PM)

I am not sure ... but I will make sure I ask him tonight.

Sebastian (Chicago)

Hey Nick,I'm going to the game tonight. Are we watching our future Shooting Guard in Mayo in addition to a Bulls win?

Nick Friedell
  (1:18 PM)

The Bulls like Mayo, but I still don't think he will end up here. The Grizz, like so many other teams, only want Taj and/or Omer in return. Plus, Mayo is going to want a ton of money when his contract comes up. The Bulls will keep an eye on him and see what happens but I think the two guard next year will be somebody else.

Dan (Chi City)

Whose more valuable to Da bulls...Deng or Boozer?

Nick Friedell
  (1:19 PM)

Deng. Aside from Derrick, he is the most valuable player on the team this season.

Mit Lane (Brooklyn)

I don't want to jinx him, but what are the chances Luol Deng stays healthy through our championship run?

Nick Friedell
  (1:20 PM)

Ah, the question everyone wants to know. Deng is definitely sore -- but his body has held up all year. My guess is that he makes it until the end, but only time will tell.

Greg M (San Rafael, CA)

Hey Nick, how much better do you think this team would be if we still had Ben Gordon? I can't even begin to think how complete the offense would be. I'm guessing you disagree, but explain to me the reasoning.

Nick Friedell
  (1:22 PM)

Look, Gordon would be a solid fit here and I think Derrick liked playing with him. But trust me, the Bulls aren't crying that he's gone. He didn't accept their initial offer and now he is one of the most underachieving players, dollar for dollar, in the league. The Bulls would bring him back -- but not at that price.

Dave (G.Heights)

Hey Nick...do you think, with their lack of experience playing in the playoffs as a team, that it is more important for the Bulls to win the #1 seed and get home-court advantage than it is for Boston?

Nick Friedell
  (1:23 PM)

No question. The Bulls know it too. That's why they are working as hard as they can to secure that one spot. Yes, they are playing better on the road. But they know they have a different confidence about them at home.

Gerrell (Los Angeles)

What's going on Nick?W/ the Bulls upcoming schedule vs. Miami's and Boston's, I think they have a real good shot at the number one seed. Does this team in anyway remind you of the 04 Piston Team, a team that's flying a bit under the radar but have tremendous team chemistry that no one is accounting for?

Nick Friedell
  (1:24 PM)

In some ways they do. The chemistry seems to be very similar. The only difference is that I think those Pistons had a few more legitimate scoring options than these Bulls do.

David Erickson (Salt Lake City, Utah)

Nick what do you put the bulls chances of winning the tittle COY and MVP this season!!

Nick Friedell
  (1:25 PM)

They get better every day. Right now I'd say Derrick is about a 98% favorite to win the MVP. Thibs is about 50/50 to win COY.

Shoeb (Barrington)

why doesn't Rose play along side Watson more often?

Nick Friedell
  (1:27 PM)

Thibs only used that lineup earlier in the season when the Bulls were trailing badly and needed a spark. Minus the Indy game, the Bulls really haven't been trailing much at all lately.

Jeffery Williams (Chicago)

Which opponent would be the toughest competition for the Bulls in the playoffs and why: HEAT, CELTICS, SPURS or LAKERS?

Nick Friedell
  (1:29 PM)

The Lakers. They have Kobe Bryant (and a host of other talented players) and they've been there before. They know how to win in the playoffs, something the Bulls haven't proven they can do yet. The other three teams aren't exactly easy, though.

Kevin (Chicago)

Do you see that with the emergence of the Bulls and D Rose that maybe some top tier free agents might want to come play here?

Nick Friedell
  (1:30 PM)

The Bulls aren't going to have a problem finding people to come play here. The bigger problem, after the new CBA is announced at some point, will be clearing out enough space under the cap to get them here.

Jacob (Crystal Lake)

I think a lot of people underestimate this team's chemistry. If they didn't have that, they wouldn't be nearly as good and that all starts with their leader: Derrick Rose. How has this roster that is mostly new guys been able to make it seem like they've been playing together for a decade?

Nick Friedell
  (1:31 PM)

It's a simple answer: They actually like each other. They like hanging out with each other on and off the floor.

Doc Rivers (Boston)

People say my team is over the hill and yes our window is closing but I WILL get my ole boys motivated and ready for the playoff run - watch out for us Nick!

Nick Friedell
  (1:32 PM)

I agree, Doc. That's what I've been saying all year.

Omer Asik (Turkey)

Are the Bulls going to trade me in the offseason if it means getting a good #2 guard? Or do they really think I'll turn into a signifcant bench player?

Nick Friedell
  (1:33 PM)

The Bulls love you, Omer. They want to keep you for a long time. But if the right deal comes along ... you may be gone at some point.

Alex (Portland, OR)

Nick, have YOU ever sen Thibs eating at a resturaunt???

Nick Friedell
  (1:33 PM)

Ha. I have not. But there's still time ...

ham (crystal lake)

Rasual Butler is amazing in 2k11. Is he really that good in real life?

Nick Friedell
  (1:34 PM)

I haven't seen him play here much at all so I'm still not sure. Bill Simmons isn't a fan, though. He saw him play in LA a lot.

Adnan (Chicago)

How do you see an Orlando and Chicago series going down?

Nick Friedell
  (1:37 PM)

The ironic thing is that if the Magic don't make all the moves they made I think that team, with Lewis, Carter, etc. playing off Howard, beats the Bulls in a seven game series. Now, I don't know what the Magic are doing. They play well one night and play terribly the next. Howard is always scary for this Bulls team, though -- The Magic are going to give the Bulls a lot of problems, but I think the Bulls can win that series now.

Ken (Chicago)

If there was a push for Dwight Howard and he wants to play here, what does that mean for Noah?

Nick Friedell
  (1:38 PM)

Like I've said before -- I think there are only two places Howard will play basketball. Orlando or with the LA Lakers. That's it.

jimmer (byu)

how do you think I would fit in on the bulls?

Nick Friedell
  (1:39 PM)

Poorly. You don't play any D. Thibs would never let you see the floor.

John (Downstate)

Ok so this is an odd question but some friends and I noticed last week that Kyle Korver has a tattoo on his side. Our reaction was Korver has a tattoo?! Do you happen to know what it is? Korver with a tattoo makes us laugh

Nick Friedell
  (1:40 PM)

I'm pretty sure it's an eagle. It is definitely a big tattoo.

Janero Pargo (Chicago)

I just got re-signed, but I hear I'm not going to play much, if at all. Was I just signed for some practice competition for Rose and Co. or does the team seriously think I can make a small contribution off the bench?

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

You're like the JV guy who got called up for the last few weeks of the varsity season, JP. Everyone likes you and you'll get a nice check. Enjoy it.

Shelby (Chicago)

NICK, MARRY ME!!!!

Nick Friedell
  (1:42 PM)

There's no way Jon Greenberg didn't write this.

David (Libertyville)

I'm still amazed by how many people trash Bogans... he reminds me of Ringo as part of the Beatles- not a great musician, but the simple stuff he did made room for everybody else to sound better. Maybe Bogans is just the right fit for this team?? Any thoughts?

Nick Friedell
  (1:43 PM)

Wow -- you guys are awesome. A Bogans-Ringo reference? Keith has played a lot better lately, but count me in the group that says the Bulls can't win a title as long as he is getting 18-20 minutes a night.

Emir (Bosnia (Europe))

What (if anything), would you change about this Bulls team?

Nick Friedell
  (1:44 PM)

They need a two guard who can take some offensive pressure of Derrick when he's not on. If he goes cold in the playoffs the Bulls will have serious problems.

Loul Deng (Chicago)

Nick, Pax and Gar probably shoulnt trade me this offseason, given my contribution/dedication to this team both with productivity and leadership, I believe I have joined Derrick and Joakim as untouchables!

Nick Friedell
  (1:45 PM)

Lu, you've played great all year ... but sorry, you are not an untouchable.

Harold (Chicago)

Love the work Nick...With the Hawks looking like they will blowup their team, is their a shot that Jamal Crawford could be traded. I see him as good fit in the Bulls system.

Nick Friedell
  (1:46 PM)

Crawford would be a solid fit back in Chicago -- but I don't think the Bulls have enough to pay him what other teams will offer.

Ben (Chicago)

Nick, do you think that Michael Redd is a guy that will be on the Bulls radar next year?

Nick Friedell
  (1:47 PM)

I don't think Redd will be on many radars next year. He just can't stay healthy.

Tony (Peru, IL )

King's "hot sauce" and the way he says "c.j watson" is great, but "Asik and Destroy" is one for the ages...do you not agree?

Nick Friedell
  (1:49 PM)

Stacey cracks me up. But -- I asked Omer the other day how he pronounces his last name and he said it was actually Ah-Shick. So sorry may want to figure out another one. I'm sure he'll think of something.

The White Mamba (Bench)

What do you think I should do, go into coaching? or be a sports analyst?

Nick Friedell
  (1:52 PM)

Well Scal, since you've told me repeatedly you aren't going to coach, my guess is that you will end up doing TV when your career ends.

Michael (Illinois State)

Pronunciation? Freedell or Frydell?

Nick Friedell
  (1:53 PM)

FREE dell.

David (Orlando Fl)

Hey Nick, whats with Omer being the only guy on the team sticking out like a sore thumb whith the white sneakers when everyone else is doing the all black on the road. I hope he conforms with dresscode for the playoffs.

Nick Friedell
  (1:55 PM)

Omer has his own "swag" as Noah would say. Omer has had his teammates rolling on the ground with some of his wardrobe choices this year. He wore a multi-colored sweated in Indy a few months ago and James Johnson lost it. "You're supposed to taste the rainbow, O, not wear it."It was hilarious.

Adrian (Waukegan)

Nick, should we be concerned about a Bulls Indiana first round playoff series? I know we are 3-1 against them this season, but they looked pretty good as of late.

Nick Friedell
  (1:56 PM)

The Pacers do not have enough to beat the Bulls in a seven game series.

Larry (Chicago)

Nick, if you're the Bulls which team is the easier first round opponent, Indiana, New York, or Philadelphia?

Nick Friedell
  (1:58 PM)

Indy. Philly has gotten a lot better. And no matter how bad the Knicks are playing, they still have two guys who can score whenever they want and carry a team at some point.

Dizzil04 (Chicago)

April 7th, biggest game of the year?

Nick Friedell
  (1:59 PM)

No question. That Boston game is going to be massive. The Bulls might have a chance to lock in the number one seed that night.

Joe (Madhouse on Madison)

Hey Nick, I'll be at the game tonight, where do I say what up and do a shot with you at?

Nick Friedell
  (2:00 PM)

Can't do any drinking at the game -- but head up to the Brew Pub. I'm sure Silvy and Carm will be up there having a good time.

Bobby (Chicago)

Do you also find yourself chanting "scalabrine" towards the end of blown out games?

Nick Friedell
  (2:02 PM)

No. But it's always a good sign when the crowd starts doing it. That means the game is a blowout and I can get the rapid reaction out to you guys even quicker.

Tony (Chicago)

What's your take on the Noah/Thibs relationship? Is he starting to chafe under the constant pressure? Jo is a warrior and a winner, but also a free spirit.....

Nick Friedell
  (2:03 PM)

Jo loves Thibs. The only reason they ever get upset at each other is because they both want to win. I don't think there's any problem there at all.

Paul (atlanta, georgia)

Hey Nick! Great Year right! How come Thibs don't put Rasual Butler in to understand the offense and defense during game time situations?

Nick Friedell
  (2:04 PM)

Because there is no way Rasual Butlet is going to play any meaningful minutes for this team in the playoffs.

Floyd (Cubeville)

You said Scal doesn't want to go into coaching, even though at least some people think he'd be pretty good. Has he elaborated on why he doesn't want to go that career path?

Nick Friedell
  (2:05 PM)

He's got a young family -- he doesn't want to deal with all the travel and time involved with coaching.

Ramiro (Chicago)

Hey Nick hows omer doing with his rookie responsibilities is he buying donuts at least?

Nick Friedell
  (2:06 PM)

According to his teammates, Omer isn't buying much of anything.

David Piazza (Plainfield)

What are the players saying behind the scenes about the possibility of D Rose winning the MVP award?

Nick Friedell
  (2:07 PM)

I think they think what the rest of Chicago thinks: That Derrick will be named MVP at the end of the year.

Gene (Park Forest)

Outside looking in the bulls are good...inside looking out how do they truly feel about moving through the playoffs. Whats the best case scenario of teams they play in the second season

Nick Friedell
  (2:09 PM)

The Bulls legitimately feel as if they can win this year. If I'm the Bulls I think the easiest path would be: Indy, Orlando, Miami, San Antonio. Having said that, if the Bulls make it to the Finals, I think they will play Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals and the Lakers in the NBA Finals.

Dizzil04 (Chicago)

Enough delaying Nick, the moment we've all been waiting for.. What Blazer you rockin tonite?

Nick Friedell
  (2:10 PM)

Still haven't decided. I've got to make a choice before I head over to talk to Sivy and Carm at Club 162 in a couple hours.

Mike (Naperville)

What's the day-to-day life of a Bulls beat reporter like? Long hours?

Nick Friedell
  (2:11 PM)

On the day of the games I work from about 10 AM to midnight. It's a lot of hours -- but the job is awesome.

Jim (Box w/no Windows)

Over Under at 3.5 games for Bulls losses the rest of the regular season...what do you think?

Nick Friedell
  (2:11 PM)

Under. I think the Bulls will finish the season out very well.

Brodie (Iowa)

Oh me! Oh my! Omer! Sorry.. but I love this guy. Any chance we will ever see him and Joakim play at the same time?

Nick Friedell
  (2:12 PM)

I think you're going to see that lineup a lot next season.

Paul (atlanta, georgia)

Good Luck tonight Nick! Will Memphis give us a problem like they did Boston. We had at least 2 to 3 days off. Will this hurt us?

Nick Friedell
  (2:13 PM)

Memphis is a very good team and they have definitely gotten better over the last couple of months -- but I still think the Bulls win this one tonight.

Lee (NYC)

Free Dell? If Dell was smart, they'd sponsor your columns on espnchicago.com....you know...give a Free Dell to random users, etc. What do you think?

Nick Friedell
  (2:14 PM)

Ha. You want to be my agent, Lee?

Gore (Chicago)

If Bulls lose in the second round to Miami or Celts will the season be considered a disappointment?

Nick Friedell
  (2:15 PM)

No question. With the way this team has blossomed this season, I think fans will be crushed if they don't at least make it to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Nick Friedell
  (2:16 PM)

All right everybody, I am out of here. I will talk to you guys next from Detroit. If you're at any of the games come over and say hello. Talk to you later.
