Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Good afternoon, all. Thanks for coming. Hope you are having an excellent day.

Denny (CG)

From what I have seen Anthony Costanzo doesn't have the athleticism the Colts would need in a Left Tackle. Any chance Tyron Smith falls to the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Smith seems to be rising, could be first tackle, could push for top 10.

C.J. (San Diego)

Do you believe Jaguars will draft a QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Yes, but not likely in the first round.

Luke (Nebraska)

Will this be Reggie Wayne's last year with the Colts? How important is signing Addai and Bullitt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

I like Addai for the Colts a lot, but almost think he's more replaceable than Bullitt because there are so few safeties out there. I would think they'd get a few more years from Wayne, though Harrison might provide a cautionary tale.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Wouldn't it benefit everyone involved to allow the trading of players during the draft? Isn't that something they can all agree on and approve before then?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Not so easy to carve out one thing and take it out of the deal. Can't and won't be done.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Do you think the Titans will get any compensatory picks for KVB and Bulluck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Definitely for KVB. A fourth or fifth. Not sure about KB.

campaign manager (capital city)

Kuharasky 2012?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I am waiting until my appearance on Letterman to announce.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Do we need to implement a "respect" policy for today's chat? I can't imagine any way we can have a true exchange of information if we don't respect you and Vice Versa.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Respect for everyone!

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Is it true that a team can only have 10 draft picks per draft? If a team starts out with 9 and trades back and ends up with 11 do they take away their latest pick? If so, who gets that pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

There is no limit on how many picks a team can have that I have ever heard about. I've seen 12-player draft classes.

KZ The Ice Cream Man (The studio)

If possible, could you list each draft pick the Jaguars have with the position (not player) that you would want them to choose at that pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Not possible. We don't know what their picks are after the third round yet because compensatory picks get inserted starting after the third round. Those come tomorrow. And I can't pretend to know who they will get at 16, better yet in the second or third round.

Bob (VA)

You could not run for office. At the debate, you would never be able to contain your contempt for the moderator and their questions, or your opponent and their answers. Your likability factor would drop to zero.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

The big news here is that you believe it's above zero now! Score.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

If you had to choose between Hasselbeck, Bulger, or McNabb for the Titans in 2011, who would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Hasselbeck, and not just because we are so strikingly similarly handsome.

Steve (Longview, Texas)

Will they produce a schedule around draft time like they do every year...just for the kicks of it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

They will. And not just for the kick of it. There are still reasonable odds they have a deal in time for there to be an opening day.

Joseph (Orlando, Fl)

What do you think D. Harvey's chances are of being on the Jags. roster at the start of next season? Whenever that will be...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Depends on who they draft, but I'd say 60 percent against.

Bret (Houston)

How big a blow do you think losing Bruce Matthews was for the Texans o-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

He was the third coach there on the line. Would have liked to have kept him. But not a huge loss, except for the part where he goes to a division foe.

Jonathan (CO)

how much will the broncos improve with the draft picks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Not enough to be good.

Houdini (Straight Jacket and Water Tank)

Are you typing with your hands bound in memory of my birthday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I am not. But best wishes. How old are you? You got it done back in the day.

CG (Cali.)

After the disappointment subsides from the rule change about kickoff, don't you think instead of kicking it into the endzone, kickers might try to get it somewhere inside the 10? The kicking team will have a 5 yard headstart now.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I think it's being overblown and that good coverage teams will do as you suggest, while bad ones will try to get touchbacks.

Brian (Nashville)

With the Titans needs at a lot of positions, do you see them trading down in the draft after the top QBs are gone to try and build up the offensive line and secondary for the coming year? If not which defensive player do you see them making a bid for?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I think you get better players with higher picks, and they need quality. I also don't expect them to do much offensive line-wise. Munchak thinks they are fine there.

Chris Polian (Daddy's shadow)

Who are some quality inside OL/DL players I could find in the 2nd-7th rounds? How about a 2nd round WR?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

OT Derek Sherrod is probably not lasting until the Colts' pick in the second. DT Terrell McClain and OT Benjamin Ijalana could be possibilities in second. WR pool there would probably be deep -- McShay ranks six as second-rounders.

Nolan (arkansas)

Are there any rules you would like to see changed?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I don't love coaches being responsible for replay most of the time.

Steve (Longview, Tx)

Does David Carr's experience with Palmer help with him possibly being a darkhorse @ QB for the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I sure hope not.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Forgive me for being off the grid on this one (in case it is a dead issue), but is there any traction to a rule change regarding hitting the QB while he is throwing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

How could they possibly stop that?

Blaine Gabbert (Columbia, MO)

Am I really going to go number 1 in the draft? I think my rise in draft status would make even Houdini pause in amazement.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

The best quarterback going to the first team when the first team needs a quarterback is hardly a stretch.

Jeremiah (Washington D.C.)

Is there at least one O lineman on the colts you think is better than average sans Jeff Saturday

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Charlie Johnson can be an effective guy, probably better at guard. Slightly above average overall, I'd say.

Taylor (California)

Chances the Titans pick a QB 8th overall or possibility of them trading down to get one in the mid-first? I just can't see them not taking one in the first round. Second/Third round guys rarely pan out and Bud was promised the Titans would select one "high".

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

I don't think the gap between Locker/Mallett and Ponder/Kaepernick is so big that you have to go crazy to get one of the first two.

SweetWeaz (Essexville (MI))

I've always been a Oilers/Titans fan... the way the play "D". Jason Jones looks as if he's ready to break out. But might he be more suitable for DE? Will Sen'Derrick Marks have a larger role this season and step up in that role?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Marks has disappointed so far. Move Jones, and you create another hole and make him re-learn stuff when he finally seems comfortable. I am generally anti-position change.

Clive (Kansas)

What the early forecast on QBs in next years draft besides Luck. Would it be better for the Titans to wait instead of reaching for 1 this year.I could see them being in the running for Luck

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

You can't wait and you can't play a season hoping to finish last. Good prospects at Arizona and Michigan State next year too.

Tom (Chicagoland)

I believe the Titans drafted 14 players in 2004. 10 is only a Madden limit.Who's making the final call in each draft room now? Gene Smith, Chris Polian, Mike Reinfeldt, and Kubiak, or somebody else?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Bill Polian is still calling the shots. Yes on the other three.

The Chocolate Fountain (EverBank Stadium)

Why are the owners and players intent on keeping us apart!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

It is hurtful and an implication they probably have not considered. I miss you.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

PK, isn't your dismissing of small towns south of Davidson County because you have not heard of them the same as Clay Travis dismissing Chris Palmer, because he hasn't heard of him? I remember you saying that it didn't mean that Palmer was insignificant, it just meant that Clay should try harder to be more aware.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

If it's my job to talk about Chris Palmer and I didn't know him, I'd jump to look at his bio online. My knowing of him has nothing to do with whether his credentials are good or not. If it's my job to talk about small towns in Southern Tennessee, I would actually do the same.

KZ The Ice Cream Man ((The studio))

i didnt mean who they would pick at 16 or the later rounds, i just meant the position they would/should pick. i didnt know about the compensatory picks though, thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

DE, LB, QB, S -- three of those four, I'd hope for.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Most mock drafts I've seen in the past 2 weeks have Fairley from Auburn going to the Titans. Does having his old D-line coach in the NFL hurt or help him? I've herad some argue that it would help because of familiarity and others say it would hurt because he's already learned under him and needs new perspective.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

I think helps. He played well for Rocker and Rocker gives the Titans insight.

Peyton Manning (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, today is my birthday and you didn't get me anything. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I tried to text you my best wishes, but I don't have a number. Enjoy your cake.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Any thoughts on the review/challenge changes made? I personally like the gaining a 3rd challenge if the coach goes 2-2, but reviewing every scoring play seems to take some of the strategy away from when coaches should use their challenges.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

What has that happened, like five times ever? I'm not real worried about it.

jamie (atlanta)

Would you rather give up a first rd pick for kolb or a second rd pick for palmer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

How high is the first rounder? If you're talking Titans, then B.

CG (Cali.)

That reminds me, you need to have a serious discussion with John at Jaguars.com about posting his O-Zone earlier so it can be link in the AFC blog here. Rick always got his Ask (R)ick column early after you had the talk!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Heck, I need John to link to me when his post goes up.

Mike (Houston)

Is it a mistake for the Texans to switch to a 3-4? Which guys on the roster won't be able to make the switch? How long will it take to make the transition? I see it as they need a true nose tackle, at least one outside linebacker, and two safeties before they can field a NFL ready defense.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Mario Williams, Antonio Smith, Brian Cushing and a healthy DeMeco Ryans will be fine for it. The same four who were fine in the 4-3. Barwin has a big transition coming. I am not buying that they have a NT for it. So they need DT and OLBs.

jamie (atlanta)

If you were titans at 8, would you take gabbert, miller, or fairley assuming all were available.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Miller. But no way he's there. Then Fairley.

Momack (PHX) [via mobile]

Who is the strongest candidate to trade for Kevin Kolb?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Just like a player going where he gets the most money. Kolb will go where he gets Philly the most/highest picks.

Bob (VA)

We know that Wayne is getting up in age, but should the Colts address that early, or wait for the late rounds since Manning seems to get it done with receivers seemingly out of no where?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

Harrison and Wayne have been at the front of the line. Those two and Gonzalez are not from nowhere, so I have to dispute your premise.

Bri Guy (US)

Which receivers besides Kenny Britt do you see making an impact if the season actually happens? Think Mariani will get a shot or keep him at Special Teams? (who's Pete Kuharsky?)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Manning called me Pete once as a joke on Wycheck's behalf. Washington and Williams should round out the top three. Mariani can play some and still be the return guy. They should be done with Gage.

SweetWeaz (Essexville (MI))

terrance knighton for the jags... paired with their 2 young ends as well from last years draft... does their defense need another DT, as I've heard or draft a DB to help out more.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

They just drafted Knighton, Alualu and D'Anthony Smith in the last two years. Smith will be healthy and they will be fine at DT.

Ryan (Rochester, NY)

Peyton's time is running out, and the Colts have the highest pick they've had in years. I say they trade up and nab Julio Jones. And then grab a decent tackle in free agency and slide CJ over to guard. NOW IS THE TIME! Can you imagine that offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Would be great. Five more years isn't running out to me, however.

Sean (NJ)

earlier today on ESPN first take they had two analysts saying the Titans need to start fresh and draft a QB and possibly have a Collins as a backup if resigned and insurance. I personally do not agree with that but what is your take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

They are going to draft one and they are going to get a veteran. I think they'd prefer it not be Collins.

Eric (Houston)

Could you see the Texans going offense with their 1st rounder to try to build a team that can really run up the score and then build the defense using the rest of the draft. Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Only if there is someone extraordinary available and they don't like available defenders.

Finnegan Fan (TN)

I saw your post praising Finnegan, I always had to defend his "feisty nature" but it became increasingly hard especially after that incident with Andre Johnson. Think he tones it down a bit this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Too early to say. But that self-awareness was encouraging.

David (Nashville, TN)

PK, with the labor uncertainty do you see any possibility any TV networks pick up any UFL games if there is an absense of NFL games when the fall comes around?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

They are already on some nothing network, I believe.

Sean (NJ)

I know everyone is in love with the Colts from this division and I understand it but is Jax that far behind and if they can draft well could you see the gap closing a little?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Don;'t know why closing a little bit means anything if it doesn't get Jags in the playoffs. Tough schedule, possible in-season QB transition, could make for a tough go.

ELI (MY CUBE)

with the 16th pick of the 2011 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Aldon Smith, DE, Mizzouri. Over/under 60%?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Under. Is he a DE or an OLB?

Jay (Knoxville, TN)

Are you disappointed with the league ruling that all NFL playing fields must remain a league approved green? Watching them play on a Blue&White field (Colts) or Black

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Who was considering a big change? I am solidly in the green camp.

Big Brother (Everywhere)

Tweeting instead of updating the chat? C'monnnnnnnnn. I also see you're enjoying a delicious apple. Move along.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

When the news demands it and the chat questions are a touch slow, what are you going to do? The tweet: The five teams that were fined for contact during dead period got word March 18 and have appealed. #NFL

SweetWeaz (Essexville (MI))

Will Witherspoon played very well for the Titans early in the season but seemed to tail off as the year wore on... is there more in the tank and will Gerald McRath step up? after serving his suspension... he played rather well. Or is he a stop gap.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Everyone on defense tailed off. Witherspoon can't be the top LB, he needs to be the third guy, I think. McRath played rather well? I thought he was pretty much invisible.

Mark (NY)

Is it crazy to think that tenn. would keep vince young for this year only because of his familiarity with the team versus a new QB and no time to prepare for the season becasue of the lock out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

You really think they'd be better off bringing him back after they said they're done with him? That would bring a whole other level of drama, which is what they are trying to eliminate.

Brian (Virginia)

Sounds like Scaife will be gone, can the Titans count on Cook to be a solid TE?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

If they can't, they really screwed up evaluating him.

Blue Paint Can (Your Local Hardware Store)

You'll be hearing from our lawyers.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Bring it!

Eddy Hunglo (Sagnasty (MI))

Does Donald Brown have the look of a starting caliber RB or is he done? Even with the extra exposure last season... he didn't give much hope for Colt fans

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Too early to be done. Starting is irrelevant. Can he be part of a tandem? Has to show it this year.

Zultan (ny)

Do you think Okoye is done in Houston? I think he still has upside because he is young

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Youth and potential only carry you so far. At some point you need to be consistently productive. He is pricey, so maybe with a pay cut he'd be OK.

Dan (Raleigh)

Speaking of tweets, I saw you mentioned the AFC South coaches being awfully quiet (whether they wanted to or not) at the media breakfast. From your perspective, what would you want to hear from a JDR or Caldwell?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I saw JDR at combine, so not as pressing. From Caldwell, want to hear about the Reich-Turner flip-flop, injury recoveries, possibility of free-agent action, assessment of O-line, thoughts on Sanders and a lot more.

Eric (Houston)

If you could pick the ideal player in the draft for each team regardless of if he was already taken or the teams draft position, who would you pick for each of the teams in the division? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I'd take Dareus if I was the Titans, Green if I am the Colts, Peterson if I'm the Jaguars and Miller if I am the Texans. Good question.

jCs (se.GA)

What are the ramifications of a player getting hurt at one of these unofficial off-season work-outs that some are planning...the same as for any other player not currently under contract, I suppose?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Yes. They risk not getting paid as the result of a non-football injury when things resume.

Tom (MN) [via mobile]

Is there any other backup QB worth trading for other than Kolb?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Flynn from Green Bay.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

flag on Mark (NY) for asking the obiligatory VY-stays-with-Titans question...15 yds, loss of question

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Thanks.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Marc Mariani is a top ___ returner in the league...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Six or eight. Not explosive like top guys. But consistently effective.

Steve (Longview, Tx)

What will you miss most about not covering Jeff Fisher anymore?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Certainly his accessibility and willingness not to hold a grudge were helpful.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Does Super Mario play OLB in a 3-4? Does he have the coverage skills, or is he going to rush the passer virtually every down?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Nope. He's an end. Like Bruce Smith was in Buffalo when Wade was there. He better rush the passer every down.

Trevor (Tennessee)

You said Dareus for Tennessee. Does that mean you rate him higher than Fairley? Are you hearing the same thing from scouts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Seems to be a consensus that Dareus > Fairley, yes.

Black_Teal (Jacksonville)

A wide receiver for the Colts? Why do that if you know there's trouble on the defense and offensive lines?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Because Green could be the next Wayne, and skill position players are what make Manning and the Colts go. I'd aim the rest of the draft at those needs.

Chris (Cookeville, TN)

Do you get have tickets to every AFC South game in advance? If the games are getting sold out in advance, how can you go last second?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

I get credentials and attend the game as a member of the working press, not as a fan in the stands. Teams get requests from some of us who don't decide on games way in advance early the week of the game and it works fine.

Brian (Virginia)

Think the Titans should get a bigger back to complement Johnson in the running game? (via Draft, Free Agency, UFL, Pros vs Joes, however?)

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Draft. Mid or late. Unless they can go back in time for Blount.

Violeta (México)

Hi PaulWhat is going on with Peyton. Is there something he is asking for and that is why he still did not sign his contract? Thanks for your answer

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

He's locked out and suing the league. He can't sign.

Tom (Chicagoland)

One person per team, one question, honest and complete answer guaranteed. Who and what do you ask?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

I am stashing this for a post and giving you a gold star.

Black_Teal (Jacksonville)

And I wanted to add that Collin did not, and is not scheduled to work out with the Jaguars though.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

And I want to point out that working out for a team or not working out for one is no sign that tells us about the likelihood that that team does or doesn't draft that player.

Last Question Guy (Parts Unknown)

You've been working hard! How bout you take off a little early?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Gave you an extra five, but I appreciate the sentiment. Thanks to all of you. Cheers.
