Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Welcome from the side of the road near my Hollywood Hotel. Didn't quite make it so I pulled over to chat with you guys before continuing. Fire away.

Moose Lightning (Denver)

Last chat someone asked you why no KK truck win coverage on Nascar Now - you replied the show deals with cup side not trucks. During an OFF WEEK? I know if Clint or Ryan would've won, the show would've had them on for an interview. During an ON week let alone off. I thought that was a real cop out answer. Why no love for KK?

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

Wasn't a copout answer. It was just what I was led to believe. Sorry. We try our best to make you guys happy.

Joe (CA)

How did you get so dumb and poor to like NASCAR so much? Were you born that way or did you get some kind of brain trauma the cost a lot of money and made you dumb? Based on your picture, I'm guessing you were just born that way.

David Newton
  (3:03 PM)

Equal opportunity chat. Thanks for the kind words.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Another crash and another driver taking blame, seems like that is a big deal with Danica crashes, do you think that drivers are pressured to "put her over" by publically taking blame for accidents? If Chris Lawson had crashed a start and parker he would not have been given interview time to take the blame.....

David Newton
  (3:04 PM)

No, there is no conspiracy theory by drivers to crash Danica. I do believe some drivers push her harder than others, but that happens with young male drivers entering the sport as well. It's why they have rookie stripes.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Where will Danica Patrick race in & with in 2012 since her contracts with JR Motorsports

David Newton
  (3:04 PM)

If I were a betting man I'd say JR Motorsports moves to Cup and she'll drive there or she'll go to Stewart-Haas. She likes the Hendrick connection.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

If Carl Edwards signs with Team Red Bull for 2012, Clint Bowyer Signs with RPM in 2012, Who do you think will Drive the 33 Chevrolet & the 99 Ford Fusion in 2012?

David Newton
  (3:06 PM)

That's a lot of movement for Silly Season. I do believe Red Bull will make a serious run at Carl, but it will take a lot to get him out of the equipment he's in. If so, Trevor Bayne is under contract by Roush so look for him to move into one of those rides.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Would a Sprint Cup Series Race be totally Sold Out if there was a woman in the field?

David Newton
  (3:06 PM)

It certainly would draw some interest from the casual fan to attend.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Race was there 3 women racing in one Sprint Cup Race?

David Newton
  (3:06 PM)

Would have to research that one. Perhaps Coke 600 many moons ago.

TG (PA)

I loved the picture of Ernie trying to eat his birthday cake. Is he trying out for fire eater!

David Newton
  (3:07 PM)

Thanks. He enjoyed it very much. He's waiting for a call from Hollywood.

TG (PA)

I thought of a song for the Media..."Takin' care of business"

David Newton
  (3:07 PM)

Like it.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the Royal Purple 300 & the Auto Club 400 in Fontana,California?

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson or Carl Edwards. Undecided.

Steve (Indiana)

Hello David. Being a longtime racing fan, my criticism of Nascar today is cookie-cutter cars and cookie-cutter tracks leading to cookie-cutter racing. Even Bristol now. Yawn. Even sponsors are demanding cookie-cutter drivers. Time to bring back real racing and inviduality (excitement). Don't wish to be negative, but I am ready for IndyCar this week.

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

I am with you on most of what you say, but believe California will be better than IndyCar opener.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Hi Newt, do you think the Kyle Busch-Carl Edwards rivalry is turning into a Petty v. Pearson, DW v. Cale, Earnhardt v. Gordon rivalry?

David Newton
  (3:09 PM)

It could have been had Carl moved Kyle out of the way on Sunday

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

Hi David, fans have been saying anyone but #48 and now that Kyle and Edwards are regularly beating Jimmie, isn't that reason to celebrate?

David Newton
  (3:09 PM)

It's only been four races. Don't get too far ahead of yourself. Jimmie is lurking.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

As of right now, doesn't Paul Menard deserve the All-Star fan vote more than Dale Jr.?

David Newton
  (3:10 PM)

Can't say deserves, but he has outperformed Jr., although if it weren't for a late flat tire and wreck at Daytona Jr would be right there with Menard.

Jacob (Wellston, OK)

Hey Newt! This whole Jen Jo Cobb thing is getting weird. I understand the No S&P, and I understand wanting to save your stuff, but now Russell is claiming Jen Jo Cobb stole stuff from him, and put it in a storage unit that he had access to, and the amount happens to be the same amount that he fixed his car for. Can you shed light on the whole situation?

David Newton
  (3:10 PM)

I like what Jennifer told me. It's like a divorce. When there's a breakup things usually get petty.

Layne (Minnesota)

Mr. Newton,I enjoyed the read on the attendance at Bristol...man did it look sparse...is the price gouging really that outrageous?...even in '09 they sold out the spring race right in the middle financial crisis

David Newton
  (3:11 PM)

Yes, it's ridiculous.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Did you know that thru the first 4 races that there is only one driver in the garage that has driven a brand new car/chassis each and every week? Guess who? Mark Martin! It hasn't been published yet if he's getting a new car for Fontana, but he probably is. I thought with the HMS driver swap that he was supposed to be driving Juniors old cars throughout the season? Kind of a head scrathcher huh? Makes you wonder if there was a problem with how they were built last season.

David Newton
  (3:12 PM)

Either that or HMS needed some new cars and Martin was the benefactor.

Ray (CT)

Any idea how many tickets they sold in Cali now that they have 1 date? Also Is this their last chance at having a race and which track gets it if its dropped?

David Newton
  (3:12 PM)

Haven't checked ticket sales yet, but will. Have to believe they will do better,

Marcus (VA)

Do you agree with Russell that Cobb's move was premeditated. Or do you feel that she was being genuine? How well do you know both parties?

David Newton
  (3:13 PM)

Don't know the parties very well to be honest, but there probably is some truth in what both say and untruths in what both say. Happens when there is a spat.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Dave, the 16 team had a good run at Bristol. I see he moved up 8 positions in the points, do you think he'll have a good run on sunday?

David Newton
  (3:14 PM)

He's usually very good at California when his equipment doesn't break. So yes.

Phil (Richmond, Va.)

Only 11 days until Martinsville!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

David Newton
  (3:14 PM)

Love it. That and Darlington are the two best races.

Tony (Tysons Corner, VA)

Will Toyota's level of support to its Nascar teams be effected by the disaster in Japan and resulting social and economic turmoil?

David Newton
  (3:15 PM)

Not at all. The plants that supply parts for the NASCAR teams were not impacted. Plus less than 10 percent of the parts come from Japan. Check out my newser last week and it will explain all.

Ray (CT)

Can start and parkers sell the points they accumulate through the year?

David Newton
  (3:15 PM)

Nope.

Kurtis (Houston, TX) [via mobile]

is this the final year for dodge & penske. i know kurt is leading points, but it jus seems that its such a competitive disadvantage being that only 3 dodges are in the field.

David Newton
  (3:15 PM)

I hope not. Would be a shame and Penske has a great relationship with the manufacturer. If anything Kurt's success should attract more teams.

Anna E. (Charlotte NC.)

Do you think Martin Truex will win a race this year?

David Newton
  (3:16 PM)

He could. Had moments where he looked good at Bristol and he still is a good talent.

Andy (MD)

Should I be worry about Smoke falling apart this year after a poor finish at Bristol last week?

David Newton
  (3:16 PM)

Not sure I would say the start to his season is falling apart. He could have won two or three races easily.

Andy (MD)

Sorry, switching gears - What were your top 3 picks in your fantasy baseball draft if you were playing fantasy baseball?

David Newton
  (3:17 PM)

Wow, I haven't been in a league since I won one a few years ago. I found I became a bit obsessive with it. OK, a lot. Check with our baseball chatters. Sure they will help.

Andy (MD)

Need a little help here, Which 5 drivers I should start for this weekend at Fontana? Thanks!

David Newton
  (3:18 PM)

Jimmie, Kyle, Carl, Biffle and Kenseth. Has a Roush flavor, doesn't it?

nathan (albuquerque, nm)

hey david love the articles anyway i am a huge mark martin fan i got the honor of watching him win the nationwide race in vegas couple weeks ago, where do u see him landing him next year i have a gut feeling he gonna end up with turner motor sports or back with roush what u think? thanks keep up the good work

David Newton
  (3:18 PM)

Thanks. And I am working out with Martin and Jillian Michaels from the biggest loser on Friday at the track. Should be fun. Will write about it on Saturday.

Jerame (Cali)

Hey Dave, once again i love the chats, thanks for spending time with us again. Who's your top 5 this weekend? And where will Junior Finish?

David Newton
  (3:19 PM)

See answer a few a go. JJ, Kyle, Carl, Biff and Kenseth. As for Junior, a top 15 would be good.

Jerame (Cali)

I know it's early, as of Right now, who are your 12 chasers?

David Newton
  (3:21 PM)

Wow. Tough call. I'll go JJ, Edwards, Kyle, Stewart, Gordon, Earnhardt Jr., Hamlin, Martin, Kenseth, Kurt. Leave the wild cards to your imagination.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, any word on a possible 4th Gibbs car as well as sponsorship for Bayne the rest of the season in the 21? Also, who was the baby with Ernie in the photo on Twitter?

David Newton
  (3:21 PM)

No word on fourth car. They have some young guys they are looking at, but sponsorship holds the key to it all. As for Bayne, still looking. And the baby is my son's daughter. Thanks for asking, and don't call me Gramps.

Tim (Tampa)

Ill start off by saying Im not a Jen Jo fan. But what do you think about this story? It just seems kinda fishy to me. I almost feel like shes doing it for publicity? But maybe Im wrong. But its just a weird story

David Newton
  (3:22 PM)

It is a weird story. I'm not on either side, but respect what she did.

Zach (Ohio)

David, in the Monday Rundown column, Terry suggested that cutting the back end of the purse, and putting it on the front end, may help reduce the start-and-park "problem" in NASCAR. I think that an equitable solution would be to pay any team that finishes less than 75% of the race the proportionate purse amount. For example, a team running 25% of the race and finishing 40th would get paid 25% of the posted purse for that position. Your thoughts?

David Newton
  (3:23 PM)

Changing the purse might help, but it also may run off some teams that need the money to race. It's really not a black and white issue.

Gene (Ohio)

Is California ticket sales up? I would hope since there is only one race this year.

David Newton
  (3:23 PM)

Checking on that.

Ryan (fremont)

I know you hear dale jr this and dale jr that but my question is where do you think dale jr will place this weekend and for the season. thanks for all the help too

David Newton
  (3:24 PM)

Top 15 this weekend would be a good run. I believe he makes the Chase and wins a race or two.

Lori (ON)

Hey Newt, Jeff Gordon is partners in Canadian Motor Speedway a track being built in Fort Erie, Ontario and I'm wondering if NASCAR would ever consider a Cup race north of the border?

David Newton
  (3:24 PM)

Would be nice. The Montreal Nationwide Race is a huge success. I'll volunteer a Pocono race for one.

Duke (San Dimas)

Hey David, you think Robby Gordon started that Energy drink company Speed, to guarantee himself a sponsored NASCAR ride for as long as he chooses to race?

David Newton
  (3:25 PM)

It sure helped.

Cory (Geneva, IL)

I think this week is the true litmus test for Jr. A track he doesn't typically run great at. The first tracks, he's always been pretty good, this one is among his worst. A top 10 on Sunday would go a long way toward making me a true believer for this season. Thoughts?

David Newton
  (3:25 PM)

Agreed. Spot on.

Shannon (Hampton Georgia)

Who are your top five drivers for the race this Sunday?

David Newton
  (3:25 PM)

See chat below. They haven't changed. Thanks for asking though.

Cole Trickle (Eagle Rock)

Does Denny Hamlin get his "revenge weekend" at ACS or does he need to 'til Martinsville?

David Newton
  (3:26 PM)

Not sure what you mean by revenge, but he'll definitely be the favorite at Martinsville. He owns that place, or at least has majority stock with Jimmie Johnson.

David Newton
  (3:26 PM)

Not sure what you mean by revenge, but he'll definitely be the favorite at Martinsville. He owns that place, or at least has majority stock with Jimmie Johnson.

Potamkin (KS)

should RCR fans be worried....it's looking like they are still one good year one bad year...consistently....I am impressed with Menard over the last 2 seasons and he really seems to be taking advantage of what SHOULD be top equipment...

David Newton
  (3:27 PM)

Not worried. Menard is off to a great start, and Harvick will be there in the end. You can't put all your drivers in the Chase every year. Even Hendrick gets that.

Wade (FL)

4 straight top 10's this season, coming to California where he's finished in the top 10 in the past 2 races there, where do you see Kurt Busch finishing this weekend? He's looking great this year.

David Newton
  (3:28 PM)

He is on a roll, and I see no reason for it to end. By the way, where I'm parked for this chat, looks like O.J.'s neighborhood.

Wade (FL)

Will Paul Menard make the chase?

David Newton
  (3:28 PM)

As impressed as I've been with him so far, I'll go with no.

Frank (Kingston, Pa)

I see that the 48 team is bringing a new chasis this weekend. Will this be Hendrick's answer to the intermediate track program or is less strategic than that?

David Newton
  (3:29 PM)

You're reading too much into it. Jimmie always is strong here if you remember. Think he's won four of the last seven.

Wade (FL)

Top 3 threats to dethrone Jimmie Johnson this season? I say Kurt, Kyle, and Carl.

David Newton
  (3:29 PM)

I definitley like Kyle and Carl. We'll see on Kurt.

Carlos (CA)

If qualifying gets rained out Fri. you think you can pretty much declare 1 of the Busch Bros or Edwards the winner?

David Newton
  (3:30 PM)

If they get in practice the start order will be determined by fastest to slowest. The good news for all is there are only 43 cars in the field so nobody goes home.

Mark (Mount Airy, MD)

Good afternoon David, My condolences on Wofford. They still had a good season. After the last pit stop on Sunday, Kyle, Carl, and Jimmie pulled away from the pack. I thought that was very symbolic. I think those are the favorites for the Championship this season. I know it's early, but do you agree??????

David Newton
  (3:31 PM)

It was a solid effort by the Terriers. Thanks. And I agree those are the three best teams out there.

Celeste (CA)

Love your consistently top-shelf work. Can you give me some insight as to how well Mark Martin and Lance M are communicating? Hard to imagine it's better than that with Alan G. Thanks.

David Newton
  (3:31 PM)

Thanks. Send emails to my boss, please. Kidding. Love the way Lance and Mark are getting along. Hendrick was a genius the way he paired everyone.

Brandon (Ohio)

Indycar has went downhill in the last few years. I doubt I will watch a race besides the Indy 500.

David Newton
  (3:32 PM)

Then at least watch the Cup race. And Nationwide race on Saturday.

Gene (Ohio)

Is Awesome Bill racing more this year? I hope so, but wish Landon the best of luck.

David Newton
  (3:32 PM)

He is. Wants to make more money to help his son Chase progress in the sport.

TG (PA)

Well I have voted for Dale jr every hour for the all star race. How many votes do you think he received already today!!

David Newton
  (3:32 PM)

More than the Republican in the last election.

Chad (GA)

Do you think NASCAR will ever get rid of start and parks or are they here to stay?

Virginia (Tx)

Can you tell me amount of downforce a Cup car has?

David Newton
  (3:35 PM)

Sorry. Glitch in the system here. As for the downforce question, I don't have the exact number. As for start and parkers, as I've said repeatedly there is no easy solution. How do you determine somebody is going to park before the race? They don't typiclaly declare it even though we suspect they will. So no, I don't see it ever going away.

big ben (nc)

so far how would you rate the rules change of drivers choosing a series to compete for the championship in? no truck or NW winners have gotten any points and i'd say less than 10% of NASCAR fans could tell you who is leading the NW series right now. will people care about the NW points race in the fall? shouldn't NASCAR have seen this coming?

David Newton
  (3:36 PM)

Think you pretty much summed up what I think. It's been a huge pie in the face.

motorola (new york)

do you like the napa know how commericial? should it be the new theme song for races?

David Newton
  (3:36 PM)

I do except for the part where Michael Waltrip turns around and shakes his booty. More than I needed to see.

Chuck (Lewisburg, PA)

Was Lance McGrew, Kyle Busch's Natiowide crew chief and was Alan Gustafson his Sprint Cup crew chief when Rowdy drove at HMS?

David Newton
  (3:36 PM)

Yep.

Shannon (Hampton Ga.)

What do you expect from Trevor Bayne this Sunday?

David Newton
  (3:37 PM)

Should be a good place for him and all the Fords.

Todd (GA)

Do you think Dale Jr will get into the all-star race without the fan vote?

David Newton
  (3:38 PM)

He's still not showing what it takes to win, although consistency is a huge step. As long as there is Talladega and Richmond there is hope for him to win.

David Newton
  (3:38 PM)

He's still not showing what it takes to win, although consistency is a huge step. As long as there is Talladega and Richmond there is hope for him to win.

Johnny (NYC, NY)

Heading down to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600...first time in Charlotte...do you recommend any fun restaurants? Looking for some local charm...

David Newton
  (3:39 PM)

For greasy food try the Penquin. For fun time and great cajun _ yes in Charlotte _ go with Cajun Queen. My favorite in town. Alo like 15 North, an upscale diner that you'll really like. For barbeque go to Mac's Speedshop on South Blvd. As you see I eat out a lot.

Layne (Minnesota)

Do you expect Hamlin to bounce back soon?...or perhaps even this weekend?...that team seems to have a hangover from Phoenix and Homestead last season

David Newton
  (3:39 PM)

He's always a slow starter, and his season usually begins at Martinsville, so yes.

Chris (Arizona)

Kurt Busch has four top tens in four races, but he still isn't getting any love. Any reason why?

David Newton
  (3:40 PM)

Hey, I wrote a column a few weeks ago saying he is a real threat to win the title. He's just not as charismatic as Kyle and Carl.

Tank (My ofice)

Joe asks "How did you get so dumb and poor to like NASCAR so much?"...he makes me English look superb:)

David Newton
  (3:41 PM)

Tank, where have you been? I'll let you handle Joe for me. I try to hang out with smart people like you.

Nate (Indy)

Indy Car convinced Firestone to stay with the series, no way they let Danica go to NASCAR. Do you think she's comfortable in NASCAR and really wants to race there when she only gets hate from so many fans?

David Newton
  (3:41 PM)

I don't think IndyCar will have a say in it. I'm betting she's gone.

Ted (Conway, MA)

Do you have any idea what has happened to Hamlin this year?Kyle Bush is doing so much better so far..

David Newton
  (3:41 PM)

Nothing. He's a slow starter. As he said last weekend tongue in cheek, "I'm in championship form."

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, no worries on calling you Gramps, that's pretty cool stuff. Hope my Grandpa can battle through his cancer and get tp spend some time with him. Also, how impressed are you with Stenhouse? Amazing what a difference a year makes.

David Newton
  (3:42 PM)

Good luck with your Grandpa. And Stenhouse has shown some talent that could make him a future star.

Gene (Ohio)

Is the 32 team committed to racing every race?

David Newton
  (3:42 PM)

Not sure every race, but I believe most of the season.

Cory (Geneva, IL)

Tell Jillian I think she is a fraud. On another note, Cuz has been on some sort of run, he's been in it to win the last 6 races! How long can he stay THAT good?

David Newton
  (3:43 PM)

He hopes all the way to Homestead. We've seen Carl on great runs like this before. The problem is every time he gets on one JJ seems to outdo him at the end.

Potamkin (KS)

Who gets it turned around first?....McMurray or Burton....it would be sad if they both just fell out this year!

David Newton
  (3:43 PM)

Burton. He has a better history of it.

Shawn (MO)

what is wrong with the 33 team i figured that they would be competing for wins?

David Newton
  (3:44 PM)

Bad luck has been part of it. Just shows how tough this sport can be.

yuccadale (ca)

Now Kevin Buckler switching manufacturers(TRG).For some reason hear Charlie Sheen in my ear.Guy has more quotes than any side show carny

David Newton
  (3:44 PM)

No arguments here.

Jenifer (Palm Bay, FL)

In '08 Rowdy won the 4th race of the year at Atlanta then won 7 more. This year he won the 4th race so do you see Rowdy winning 8-10 races this season?

David Newton
  (3:45 PM)

If anybody can, he's the man. Really like what I've seen out of him so far. But eight to 10 in today's world will be tough. Lots of parity out there.

Sherri (Indiana)

Any update on Mike Dillon's health? Who is spotting for Clint Boyer?

David Newton
  (3:46 PM)

He is out of the hospital and doing better. Prayers are with him. Dillon stopped spotting for Clint at the start of this year. His name slips my mind, but I mentioned him at Daytona in my spotter's column. Check it out.

Saul (Cali)

the race is 400 not 500, what kind of racing should we expect?

David Newton
  (3:47 PM)

And we are thankful for that. It'll be interesting to see how the shorter distance impacts, whether fuel mileage figures in or not. California has had a couple of good races lately.

Walt (St. Charles, MO)

How did Kyle Busch regain his self confidence and has the #18 team improved because of better communications between Kyle and Dave?

David Newton
  (3:47 PM)

I don't think he ever lost it. He's just matured, and that has led to better communication all the way around.

Gene (Ohio )

Heard some former F1 driver is coming to NASCAR next year for Red Bull. Know anything about that?

David Newton
  (3:48 PM)

Nothing yet. Know they like a few guys like Carl and plan to make runs at them first.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

David, Has Bad Brad been a disappointment in the Cup Series???? He runs so well in the Nationwide Series , I just thought we would see better results in the Cup Series sooner.

David Newton
  (3:48 PM)

I agree. Not sure what the problem is, particularly with Kurt performing so well.

yuccadale (ca)

As long as everyone focuses on JJ,and not thier own program. They'll be chasing him

David Newton
  (3:48 PM)

Good point.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. (NC)

Do you know of any good driving schools near Auto Club Speedway? I really stink in that particular area. Maybe Kurt or Kyle Busch can give me lessons?

David Newton
  (3:49 PM)

Funny. Always one or two of you on a chat.

Shannon (Hampton Ga.)

Much as I would love to pick the above five drivers.... I need a couple of cheaper drivers? Whom might that be Mr. Newton?

David Newton
  (3:49 PM)

Cheaper? Go with David Ragan and Paul Menard.

TG (PA)

We won't call you Gramps and we won't call you Shirley. Sorry, but you made me think of the Airplane movie.

David Newton
  (3:50 PM)

Mentioned that in my column when talking about movies Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in.

stanley (philly)

what's up with danica

David Newton
  (3:50 PM)

Headed to IndyCars in St. Pete.

Walt (St. Charles, MO)

Do you think that #18 Gibbs and #99 Roush have found a little something, technically, that has given them the edge on #48 Hendricks?

David Newton
  (3:51 PM)

Not really. They're both off to great starts and both are great drivers, just like JJ. As I said earlier, it's still too early to think JJ is going away.

stanley (philly)

give danica a break

David Newton
  (3:51 PM)

OK, enjoy St. Pete, Danica.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey David, WHo do you think is the second best RFR driver besides #99? Thanks.

David Newton
  (3:52 PM)

Biffle and Kenseth are right there. And Kenseth has a title so I'll give him a slight edge.

Diane (Los Angeles)

Everyone is wound up about Menard Truex Jr and Jr being top 10 this year. I'm sure the media likes having new folks to talk to on Fridays but weren't all 3 of them top 10 this time last year too? And..

David Newton
  (3:52 PM)

Biffle and Kenseth are right there. And Kenseth has a title so I'll give him a slight edge.

David Newton
  (3:52 PM)

Biffle and Kenseth are right there. And Kenseth has a title so I'll give him a slight edge.

David Newton
  (3:52 PM)

Biffle and Kenseth are right there. And Kenseth has a title so I'll give him a slight edge.

David Newton
  (3:53 PM)

Know Menard and Junior were. Not sure about Truex without looking. And we do like new faces in the media center. Good stories.

adam (sc)

david,do you know when penskes Dodge deal expires and has there been any rumblings to pair with a new manufactuer if so who and your thoughts

David Newton
  (3:54 PM)

Believe he has a few more years from my last conversation with him. Heard the Volkswagen thing was done.

Ginger (AZ)

Who's the funniest person in the media center and who is the biggest pain in the butt?

David Newton
  (3:54 PM)

Me. And can't answer on the second on the grounds it might put my life in jeopardy.

David Newton
  (3:55 PM)

Actually, Brant James who covers the sport some and should cover it more is the funniest guy I know in the media center.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

I love NASCAR but don't the Bristol attendence plus Dale jr. depending on a fan vote to get in the All-Star race show how much trouble the sport is in?

David Newton
  (3:55 PM)

It shows Bristol has issues. But because Junior is not guaranteed a spot in the All-Star race I don't believe says the sport is in trouble.

big ben (nc)

coming down to races 24, 25, 26 do you see the possibility of a teammate letting another teammate win a race if they need it to get a wildcard spot in the chase? i love the new wildcard rule and this is the only potential caveat i can find in it. a win at richmond would mean much more to someone looking to get in the chase than to someone who is already in

David Newton
  (3:56 PM)

It's possible, but these guys are pretty competitive. I can't imagine Kyle Busch pulling over and letting Denny Hamlin win. Can you?

Steve (NY)

For the sake of argument, can you see teammates of a driver with a win but sitting 19th in points a race before the Chase taking out other drivers so the teammate can get the W and get in the Chase? And would there be blowback if it did happen?

David Newton
  (3:56 PM)

Again, likely will not happen.

His deal with Roush will be done soon.

Becky (NC)

In Rowdy's RaceHub interview he mentioned that he congratulated Alan when his hero Jeff Gordon won Phoenix. Does Rowdy still have lot's of friends at Hendricks?

David Newton
  (3:57 PM)

I'm sure he does. Have never asked.

Steve (NY)

Even though he has a win, do you think the 24 has reason to sweat being 19th?

David Newton
  (3:58 PM)

One win might get you in as the wild card. Two would be almost a lock. So no, I don't see him sweating.

Steve (NY)

Does anyone really know how far back is too far back at this point in the season?

David Newton
  (3:59 PM)

Burton in 29th is pretty close.

Scott (Charlotte)

I had to laugh when I read articles about Danica being immature after her wreck in Bristol. Lets see:Kyle Busch threaten to kill one of his teammatesCarl Edwards tried to chock HarvickHarvick gets suspended for a race for fightingGordan and Burton girl foughtStewart has fought drivers, sportswriters and track promotersLogono tried to fight because his daddy told him toShall I go on?

Good points.

Steve (NY)

Are there any guys--I know you can't name names--that might be in need of a few 12-Step meetings, and might that be a factor in some drivers' declines?

David Newton
  (4:00 PM)

Not that I know of.

Rhonda (Pembroke Pines, Fl)

People only talk about how Kyle has matured but hasn't Carl Edwards calmed down since he is married with kids too?

David Newton
  (4:00 PM)

Yep, Carl has matured a great deal. It happens with most drivers in the sport. This isn't new.

Rhonda (Pembroke Pines, Fl)

How soon before Richard puts Austin Dillon in the #33? maybe a few races this year?

David Newton
  (4:01 PM)
