Good morning, gang. We only got 60 minutes to save the world... so let's get right to the fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee in hand -- who is up first?
Madson or Contreras for short term saves? What's your concern level with Lidge and Bailey for the full season? Any word on who will get first crack in Tampa?
I like Madson better, but I do think it will be a timeshare. Lidge was an injury waiting to happen, so I am concerned somewhat, though I do think he returns at least for a time. Same with Bailey, who at least is in "recovery mode" from a previous injury -- it's not a "new" problem. Tampa will be a committee, but I think McGee ultimately wins the job.
Need a replacement SP. McClellan, Dickey, Nova or Beachy?
Given the expected offensive support, I'd take a chance with Nova. Dickey is a guy I might spot start at some point this season, but not on Opening Day.
Whats your thought on these pitchers: Anibal Sanchez, D. Lowe or C. Pavano worth picking up?
I'm very high on Pavano. The ballpark helps him and I think he wins 15-17 this season with acceptable ERA/WHIP for a No. 4-type fantasy starter.
Is there an injury-prone quotient that should get factored into stat analysis before drafting?
I think any good owner takes those things into account and adjusts the numbers accordingly. Guys like Ian Kinsler need to be a bit lower than ironmen types.
Can you compare the pros and cons and Castro and Desmond? I always seem to be left with these two during drafts and never know who to take. What's your take on upside and potential with these guys?
I don't think Castro has developed as much pop as Desmond, though he may hit for a higher average. Right now, today, I go Desmond... but longterm, I do think Castro has more upside.
I grabbled Ellsbury in the 6th round, instead of Rios. Will I regret it?
Only if Jacoby cracks his ribs again.
Brandon Belt headed back to the minors? I thought with Ross down they would keep Belt with the team, the guy has been killing spring training!
It's about the cash. They'll likely send him down, just like they did with Posey. I think he's a lock to be here by June, though.
Pick a catcher, any catcher...didn't draft a catcher. Posada, Y. Molina, Ianetta, Arencibia?has to be Posada right, but how many ABs will he get?
I'd go with Iannetta or Arencibia. I think as the season enters the summer, the Yankees start to wheel and deal and the DH spot fills up with shiny new toys -- Posada will then be odd man out.
Does Jed Lowrie have an every-day job? Would love to grab him for SS eventually, but worried he will be sent to the minors and, if he makes the roster, will not play much. Can you help?
He'll play 3-4 times a week, giving each infielder a break -- unless and until Scutaro stinks up the joint bad enough to be benched.
With so many closer situations up in the air, would you trade Lilly for K-Rod? (Lilly is 4th/5th best starter on roster)
No, I'd grab two or three of these "possible closers" like Kimbrel, McGee, Rauch, etc. and hope I pick at least one guy who gets and keeps job.
I have read that the Orioles have reassigned a few to the minors already today, but no word on Britton. Any chance they are thinking about starting him in the rotation?
Britton is scheduled to pitch today, so that's why he hasn't been sent to the minors... yet. I think he takes a shower and packs his locker. He'll be back this summer.
Which NYM outfielder would you rather take a chance on...Bay or Beltran?
Beltran. Assuming he can get back to 100 percent, or even 80 percent, he's likely to outperform Bay.
I waited on 1B and have both Adam LaRoche (recent iunjury) and Ike Davis (slow start in spring training). Do you think I should pick up Ka'aihue or Mitch Moreland if I have a bench spot for insurance?
Certainly it couldn't hurt... I prefer Moreland to Kila, as he's made it impossible for the Rangers not to start him.
Simple: Garza or Chacin in a 10-team keeper league?
I've never been high on Garza, and I don't envision him adjusting well to the new park.
AJ, More late round/waiver value Gaby Sanchez or Justin Smoak?
I think both have 20 home run potential, and Gaby is likely to have the better BA, so we'll go Marlins here.
Do you try to stay away from similar players in the same lineup, like Kinsler and Andrus? Does that lower their value?
Two guys from the same lineup is not a deal-breaker for me, but I can't say I've never shied away from a player in order to spread the risk...
Who ends up with more saves and has the most value: Bard, League, Venters?
Bard would be my pick. Even if Papelbon somehow stays with the Red Sox closer job all year, Bard should get 5-7 wins out of that arrangement... and if he takes over... all the better.
Nyjer Morgan still on the outside looking in?
I find it hard to believe that Gomez keeps the job for more than a month after this deal went down.
Stauffer or Beachy in an NL-only league with QS and K/9?
I'll take the Opening Day starter on a team that plays in Petco over a "maybe-No. 5"
Are you concerned about Latos's injury? Where would you slot him?
I'm not that worried yet, but if he isn't ready by April 12, then I'll start to panic a bit. Probably back end of top 25 SP.
Who do you like better this year Arod or Wright?
Still like David better... but can't deny that A-Rod is looking healthy and closing the gap.
Joey Mauer over Buster Posey despite the lack of HRs?
In theory, yes... but when are you drafting them. If it means a 3rd-5th round pick, I'm not taking Mauer.
Do you have any injury concerns over Matt Cain?
I have injury concerns over everybody... you just never know! But no, spring elbow woes that a pitcher returns from are not any more scary to me than a hitter with a sore hammy.
What do you think my new walk-up music should be?
Rebecca Black's "Friday" - only slightly less annoying than Miley.
AJ - I'm Tulophobic. At the tail end of a snake draft - would you grab Votto and AGon with your first two picks, even if Tulo were still sitting there?
"Which one should I taaaaaake????"I'd sit tight on SS and go with the Votto/Gonzo combo there, yes.
Which handcuff for JJ Putz: Demel or Hernandez?
I think Hernandez there. Sorry, Sam.
have room for one more outfielder who gets the spot... Colvin, J.D. Drew, Coghlan, Morrison, or Gordon
If Colvin gets the playing time... but I don't know he does... LoMo is my pick.
Chipper Jones, any early season value while healhy?
Yeah, I'd run him out there -- especially if I'm waiting on Youk to get 3B eligibility -- and then trade him pronto.
Paul Konerko was the #4 1B last year and #12 overall player in our league format...I have him as my starting 1B and I am ok with it. Am I missing something?
I don't think so... it's not like he's 40. I mean since 2004, we're pretty solid 150 GP, save for 2008 and he still had 500AB that year. Average should drop, but .280 and 35 HR? Sign me up.
Would you start Boujos or Morse as a temporary utility player?
Morse. Ride the lightning!
Edwin Encarnacion...potential 30 HR guy or bust this year?
Potential, yes. Especially given the home-run happy park in which he plays... but he's well down on my list of 3B to take. I guess I don't believe in EE.
Am i worth a stash on the Bench?
No doubt. Look, I've been burned by George Brett, Jr. more than once, but you don't get that label without some skill... I'm not buying the hot spring, but to sit on my bench in case he's finally put it all together? Absolutely.
How confident are you in Broxton this season? Thinking of handcuffing him with Kuo in a 10 team mixed league.
Not very. I mean I think Mattingly keeps him there for at least two months, but if he blows two in a row, I'm getting out.
how long do you foresee Rauch and Fuentes being their teams closers based upon the recovery of others and their own experience with the job?
I think Rauch keeps the job if he does well early. Fuentes I can see being slotted back to the eighth once Bailey is back and ready to go.
What are your thoughts on Reid Brignac? Is there upside there at a shallow position? Deserving of a deep bench spot with 2b/ss eligibility?
Hey, we're talking 12 HR and 10 SB, maybe? That's not bad to have in reserve. I don't buy the .400 spring average at all, but better than .040.
We So Excited....Who should fill the last spot in my rotation, Erik Bedard, James McDonald or Travis Wood?
All have Q's. If McDonald was healthy, I'd say him... but right now that's not a sure bet. So, Wood.
Where do you think Jeter will wind up ranked amongst shortstops this year? You think he has another descent 2 - 3 years in him?
Descent? LOL. No, I don't think he plummets into the abyss this season. And if not, then he's a top 5 SS. When the bottom falls out, it falls all the way - no middle ground here.
If Rebecca Black was a fantasy baseball player, which one would she beeee?
I am by far the best second baseman in the league, agree?
Yes, Robinson. Yes.
I have an opportunity to acquire Carlos Santana or Mike Stanton and they would both come with keeper eligibility for next year. Who do I make the move on?
I'd go with Stanton. Catcher coming off that injury does give me at least some pause.
Who is your "fantasy kryptonite"?
Up until this year, Lastings Milledge -- and now the Whote Sox have gone and put him on the roster... oh no!
For 2011, am I more Felix Hernandez or teamate Chad Billingsley?
Adam Lind - under/over 30 HR this season
Weeks, D Young, or Konerko in my first round after all keepers are taken?
Waited on 2b options and left with Espinosa/Aviles/Theriot? Little help here?
Jose Lopez or Emaus? Salty or Jaso?
Flier on Emaus and Jaso
And that's the final gun, gang. Thanks to all who asked questions... couldn't get to them all, but I'm on the Twitter. Find me there. Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
