Good morning gang! Nobody's bursting into song around me, so I guess we're doing OK. Ready for 60 minutes of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee in hand... who's up first?
JJ. Hardy is batting 9th for the O's... drop him for equally crappy, Theriot, Peralta or Aybar whom are hitting higher in the lineup?
Unfair to compare him to NL players hitting ahead of the pitcher, but regardless... you act as if a 9th place hitter can't get stats. I think Robinson Cano did just fine there once...
Do you think I can be effective as the closer? What are the chances Lidge is out all year and I keep the Job. You like me better than guys like Rauch, League, Capps?
I like Rauch better, in a similar situation, mainly because I think if Lidge had been declared out for the year, Madson would have been given the closer job. Short-term I think Contreras can work, but not for a full season.
Rolen or Gordon for a spare roster spot?
Despite the 0-fer, I would give Gordon the shot right now.... almost the hero.
Pujols went 0-5 yesterday. What crap! Should I drop?
Yes folks, that is sarcasm at its finest. At least, I hope...
AJ - Can we all just agree not to send in the question where we extrapolate Jeff Mathis' HR's over a 162 game schedule? It was funny in 2004...
Actually, Clay... I don't think it was ever all that funny...
You have Sanchez ranked 11th in today's daily notes. Do you avoid his first start or is that just a reflection on the strength of today's pitching?
Just a factor of trying to weigh last season's rankings with the new unknown frontier... as you see the Rating is not that bad - could be anywhere from 6-12. Road start factors in a bit... it's early, you know?
Just breathe, AJ, just breathe...
I appreciate the reference, but Lexie sang that one, dude. Sorry, that's just how I operate.
Can I get a quick ranking: Thornton, Gregg, Rodney, Venters, McGee
Thornton, McGee, Venters, Gregg, Rodney.
Would you start Myers @PHI today in a league with an innings cap?
Given the chances of rainouts in the first week of play, I tend not to fear innings caps... though it's not the greatest matchup -- but I didn't think Livan would be effective either...
If you could flip Morse for Luke Gregerson and Hosmer in a dynsty would you do it?
Probably... just because he had a great spring doesn't mean it has to translate into an All-Star season. But don't sacrifice the stats if you don't have a regular to step in.
I know it was only one save situation but are you worried about Axford's long-term job security and if so who is next in line?
Saito is probably next in line, but I wouldn't expect a switch after one game... as Owen said earlier: Breathe...
last year, C J Wilson was 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA against Boston. Start him today?
I don't think you play the matchup game in Week 1-2 before we really, truly know who is who -- but having said that, this is not the same Boston team as last year by any stretch of the imagination. 2010 record doesn't really apply.
Gotta answer this question on Friday...Ike Davis or Mitch Moreland...Which 1st Basemen should I starrrrrrrrrrt?
Ike, because Moreland will not be starting. Napoli at 1B.
Do you tend to just stick with guys you think will produce over the course of the season? Or are you one of the guys who always plays the matchup? --I can never decide which one to be
In a roto league, I stand pat and let the chips fall where they may a lot more than an H2H. In those leagues, I'll certainly look to bench guys playing on the road in tough parks for Rockies and Reds at home, for example. But I try not to do the day-to-day guessing.
Gotta grab my bowl, gotta grab....Shields or Wade Davis?
Bus just left the bus stop... I like Shields better than the new Mr. Moneybags.
Broxton - cut bait already? I wasn't expecting much
Who won the game? That's, in the end, all that matters to the skipper... that and walks, which he avoided.
Jaime Garcia will be a top ___ pitcher this year. C.J. Wilson will be a top ___ pitcher this yearac
50 - 30. That's all I'm willing to commit to.
Chipper Jones or Jason Bay?
Bay's already on the shelf, and though Chipper is likely to end up there too, I'd take Larry now, hope for a hot April and then trade him before he breaks down.
Neil Walker or Ben Zobrist?
Like them both, but I'm high on Walker.
Which game(s) interests you the most today? Best story line for today?
Josh Johnson - how does he look. Roy Halladay - what happens if he gives up 3 runs in 5 IP? Does the city of Philly line the Ben Franklin bridge? It's baseball! Just seeing all the teams in action is awesome.
Banana Walnut Muffin or Coffee Cake
Allergic to bananas, so this is the easiest question I'll field all day.
I have a delima! Should I drop Tyler Clippard for Jake Mcgee?
You have two "delimas" and one is spelling. I think McGee gets the closer job, so yes.
What's your theory on the cold weather. Does it negatively affect players and if so, pitchers or hitters more?
I think it effects everyone about the same - given the length of time in Florida or Arizona, hitting 40 degrees and rain/snow can't be a positive thing...
Do you see Starlin Castro finishing as top 5 shortstop? It's such a thin position and if he goes something like .290/15/90 runs/15 sb's its probably gonna happen, no?
I personally don't see the power... but those stats will be in the Top 5 neighborhood.
I know don't panic early, but volquez was awful. In fact he's been awful for a while. Can I drop him, or are there better days ahead?
Well why did you draft him then? Didn't you think he would be better than the other available guys? Every starting pitcher gets an Opening Day mulligan from me.
Which of these three 2B eligible guys are the best to trade? In other words, who is probably the most overhyped, so I can get the most return and not feel the hurt on my team. Prado, Raburn or Emaus?
Emaus hasn't done anything yet, has he? He plays in New York, so there is some value to that in certain circles... but I do think Prado is probably the most hyped of the three.
Gio or CJ Wilson Zimmermann or Chacinthese are tough choices...I need your help.
For the season, Gio and Zimm. For day-to-day calls, check out Daily Notes. I do the rankings for Thurs-Sun games. Others will cover M-W.
What do you think about Garza's 10.38 ERA being blamed on the "dry Arizona air"?
Excuses are not what I look for in a pitcher... and guess what, Garza? There's a lot more wind blowing out in Chicago to go along with that moisture.
Is Ryan Madson worth stashing away in a 12 team mixed league? He is a free agent. My current closers Axford, Cordero, and Chris Perez.
Better to handcuff Saito for Axford.
Who has a better season, Nishioka or Desmond? Except for HRs, I think Nishioka should be better across the board. What say you, good sir?
Wrote all about Nishi in 30Q. I think Desmond's power/speed combo trumps the Twin this season.
got offered brandon belt in exchange for derrick lee? I like it but am concerned about belt being sent down when ross returns. what's your take?
They've already started the clock, so I can't imagine they send him down. I'd consider the deal.
Where would you rank Kimbrel/Venters in terms of closing/saves this year? I know it's closer by committee in ATL, but any feeling towards one or the other?
Not a lot of track record to go on with Cox no longer at the helm, but I think Kimbrel getting first dibs says something.
Grady Sizemore plays in _____ games, and I'm _____ I drafted him in the late late rounds.
75, glad ...(and not any sooner)
Would you trade Prince Fielder for Nelson Cruz?
If I truly believed that Cruz would play 140+ games, I would. But I don't.
Realistic timeframe for Utley to return, lets say All-Star break. Is that still worth a 10th round pick, in a 12 team draft? I have Cano, but I can stash Utley on my DL for now.
Certainly worth a stash... after all, when healthy he's No. 2 second baseman. But the Phils are so tight-lipped about things re: Chase, I'm not all that optimistic.
Jose Canseco plays in ____ games, and I'm brilliant for drafting him 4th overall.
How I love April 1!
Hi AJ, Curtis Granderson got off to a good start yesterday. Do you see him having a strong season in his 2nd yr in NY? And how about the BA - do you think he'll finish higher than .250?
Forget the results... just the fact he played, given the day-to-day status was all I needed to feel confident. We're looking at 30 HR and .275 or so.
Please no more questions...ever...about Grady Sizemore. He doesn't hit for average, has only a modicum of power, and cannot run anymore. Nobody outside of Cleveland cares about him. Sorry but it had to be said.
Somewhere, Whitman Mayo weeps.
I can pick Wainwright up off of waivers in a 10 team 5 keeper league and then keep him for 3 years in the 20th round, but is it worth clogging a DL spot ALL year?
If you can drop him later on if someone with a chance to return to play needs to fill the spot, then what does it hurt? Maybe you get lucky.
Clay, that wasn't Jose you drafted, it was Ozzie.
Why do you answer stupid questions from people? It's a waste of time and they aren't even funny.
You mean like this one, Dave? ; )
It's "delima" time again: Alcides Escobar or Pennington. (Yes, this is what happens when you wait on SS.)
I'm actually bullish on Pennington this season, so he'd get my support out of the gate.
And to make it worse, it was Ozzie Nelson
Who wins the CONCACAF Gold Cup?
I always pull for Guadeloupe!
In a standard roto, would you go with the upside of a Blake Lively or a wiley vet like Jessica Biel in the first round?
Raj, if you're at BYU, I'm not sure you're allowed to consider such things... XOXO.
Would you normally roll with a 2 start pitcher if they are of relative equal value? I mean I wouldn't sit Carpenter for Lohse. How much should the second matchup influence.
You answer your own question. I don't trade you a quarter for 2 dimes...
Tabata, McLouth or Dexter?
I'm a sucker for the speed. Maybe I'll end up in an ice cream truck, but I'd follow Dexter's exploits.
Of these potential call-ups, who do you feel will have the biggest fantasy impact in 2011? Batters: Moustakas, Montero, Hosmer, Ackley, Jennings; Pitchers: Britton, Turner, Gibson, Minor, Teheran
Ackley and Britton.
Are you on the Kila bandwagon?
Pineda or Chris Young this year?
Mauer/Alvarez or ARod/Soto?
A Rod and Geovany.
Just used a high waiver position to snag Colvin. In your esteemed opinion, is he going to hit himself into serious playing time?
I think so... Fukudome and Byrd don't pack the same wallop.
Let's end this chat with a question from RB! We so excited over Lackey or Beckett? Go watch my video!!!!
Lackey for me in my front seat. Beckett in the back seat.
That's the cuckoo. Time to roll... BASEBALL IS HERE! WATCH SOME GAMES! I'll be on the Twitter... until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
