Hey Hey. Let's get this started. Have to warn ya: Kinda fired up today. Try to keep up.
Hey Matt, its no secret the Dolphins want to trade back to acquire a 2nd round pick. Who do you think makes a good trade partner for them at the back of the 1st round?
There in lies the problem. Who is THAT prospect who will be sitting there that other teams (more than one preferably) will really covet? I doubt it is a QB. Maybe Ingram is that attractive, but I tend to doubt it considering that few teams really need a RB. Is there an OLineman worth jumping up that far to get? Doubt it, but maybe T Smith if he falls. Would have to be a DLinemen in my estimation. Maybe a guy like Aldon Smith, Cameron Jordan or JJ Watt. Smith would be most likely. And PK just asked me to pick a few specific DL that each AFC South team would covet. I thought Smith would be GREAT for Jax at 16. I guess Kerrigan could also draw interest.
Do you think Andy Dalton would be available in the 2nd round or is he going to be a late 1st?
I doubt he goes in the top 32, but a lot of those bad teams at the beginning of the next round will be quite interested.
Matt with talibs promblem and ronde on 1 year deal and old and ternard jackson gone would you take aaron williams thanks?
#20 is just too early for Williams to me. But your points are valid.
Matt, can you pass the word that we will NOT be selecting Mark Ingram at 15?!? Every Mock I see, most "amatuers" have us selecting him. We will be trading down (like we did last year), to get a 2nd round pick back. We don't value RBs like we do OL and DL. Thanks!!
Yeah, I hear ya! That just seems WAY too convienient for those who do mocks. The fit is fine, but Miami can't afford to go 1. RB, 2. ZERO. Plus-could always put a serious offer on the table for a guy like DeAngelo whenever free agency eventually does occur.
Mike neal is really jenkins replacement but with jollys problem and pickett still there what round would you draft a de?
You have to think that Jolly won't play football again-esp for GBay. I would love to sign Jenkins if I were GBay. The guy is a heck of a player. But-if they know that he is going to leave, then yet, you add another DE-but prob not until Round 3 or so.
If the eagles don't take a CB early in the draft is it safe to assume they are going after Nnamdi?
I suppose. But they will not be alone on that quest. I do think that is Philly's #1 need-a CB to start opposite Samuel.
How would you rank the following 3-4 defensive ends in this draft: Cameron Jordan, J.J. Watt, Muhammad Wilkerson, Cameron Heyward, Christian Ballard, Allen Bailey? Thanks
Well, it does depend on what you need from the position. Some schemes want attacking guys at that position and some want power, but here goes: Jordan, Watt, Heyward, Wilkerson, Ballard, Bailey. Not sure Bailey is a fit for a 3-4 unless it is a really heavy penetrating scheme.
& I REALLY like Jordan. Dallas should consider him very strongly at #9.
If the Dolphins do slide back in the first to pick up a second is it safe to say they are going to go with a safety position in first and QB in second or do you see QB being addressed whenever free agency starts? Thanks.
Tough call. I would bet that they are very high on M Pouncey. I can buy that. Could make that OL exceptional. FS is the only real need I see on D, so I really doubt they go DL again. BTW-I am expecting Miami to have a Top 5 D this year.
Mock drafts are always fun, but so many are really flawed. Mike Holmgren taking a WR at #6 when they have nothing on defense? Jake Locker going to Seattle just because he is from there? The Titans passin on Newton because VY didnt work out? Heck even Mel Kiper mocked the Texans selecting Julio Jones, when they just had one of the worst DEF's ever. They are all flawed.
They are extremely flawed. But-not defending my colleages, because most of your points I agree with-but try doing one. Seriously. Sit down and pencil in a guy from 1 to 32. It is painful. And then just one thing changes (a reach or a trade) and everything you projected is gone. As for Houston, I VERY much understand their D problems, but in this instance, I would not kill them for J Jones. Imagine that O...they would be like the early 80s Chargers! But I doubt Jones is there. Do need to add one WR though semi high.
I see Denver needing a pass rush for sure, but don't you think with Ayers and Dumervil they need to get someone in the middle for that 4-3 instead of trying to find yet another end?
I am not sold at all that Dumervil is an everydown player in the 4-3, so adding another DE is def a big deal for them. But I agree, DT is the biggest need. If he doesn't go #1, I think Denver RUNS to the podium for Dareus.
Am i a 3-4 OLB like Clay Matthews or a 4-3 WLB Pass Rushing deamon like Lavar Arrington? Is there a difference between the two players
Can't say I remember Arrington to a T, but I doubt Miller has that kind of strength/power. I would say more like Matthews-VERY explosive, but also very fluid. I think Miller can be a productive player in coverage in time as well. But here is my worry with the guy-and trust me, I like him a lot-but can he handle the run right at him as a 3-4 OLB? That isn't an easy chore. A big NFL RT coming right at him off the snap.
Thanks for taking the time out to answer our questions, Matt! What do you think about Jabaal Sheard as 3-4 pass-rushing OLB? And around which pick do you project him going?
Stock is really on the rise. And yes, I do like him as a 3-4 OLB. Moves well enough.
Everyone says Gabe Carimi of Wisconsin is a right tackle. Do you agree?
Ideally, yes. But can also play the left side-there are worse athletes playing that position now with relative success in the league.
DL Stephen Paea of Oregon State: is he going in the 1st round?
Maybe to Indy? Jets? Bears? Could see all of those happening...assuming the team docs are cool with his injury.
You going to be in my city for the Draft? Every year, it's s a zoo out there that weekend. What do you see the strategy for Pioli and the Chiefs do with this draft? Pick at 21, trade back/front?
Nope, I will be in my basement in front of the big screen hosting a Cover it Live. Last year, we set all kinds of records with the amazing number of people we had checking out CIL. Stop by. As for KC-SO many directions they could go. Def OL is an option-either one of many OTs or Pouncey. I think WR is a need, but one they will attack in Round 2 or Free Agency. A NT would be great, but can you pull the trigger on P Taylor that early? Maybe in a trade down though. A pass rushing OLB would also be great. A Smith? Ayers? Smith would be fantastic, but prob gone. Don't see that perfect fit for KC right now-bet they go with a guy like Carimi.
Are the Bills really considering trading Lee Evans? What can we get for him?
I would strongly consider it. But have to get something in return. Can't give him away. Much like S Smith in Carolina. He might thrive if he could get out of that situation. But Evans really didn't play well last year at all. 3rd rounder?
M-Dub with Rex's lust for DBs, do you think if Jimmy Smith continues to fall that the Jets could select him, which would leave Cromartie a free agent pending the lockout?
That doesn't seem unrealistic. We didn't see a ton of him, but I wouldn't say that last year's first round CB Wilson didn't blow me away and might be more of a slot CB in the end. I can buy it. But this is another team that has a LOT of needs on DDay.
You seem to believe Dareus will be quite the player in the NFL. From a high level, if a team in the 2-4 range got an offer to move back into the 8-10 range but was going to miss out on Dareus, would it be worth it to move back or is Dareus that kind of player you don't want to miss out on? Obviously individual needs vary, but if you look at it based on the players who will be available in those ranges what do you think?
I like Dareus-but mostly because I think he is so safe. Not saying he is the next Bob Lilly or Joe Greene, so moving back makes sense-if the price is right.
Interesting picks: DL Jarvis Jenkins of Clemson. When will he go?
I think he is being forgotten. 3rd round by a team that runs a penetrating 4-3.
Interesting picks: DL Kenrick Ellis of Hampton. When will he go?
2nd. Could be one of the very few pure NTs in this draft. And that position is in demand.
Matt, you mentioned Paea to a number of teams and then said KC needs a NT - do you not see Paea working out as a NT in the NFL? More of a 4-3 guy?
I do like him more as a 4-3 guy, but many see him as a NT. He is very strong (although I think that the rep test isn't a wonderful indicator), but he just isn't that 330 lbs guy that most need for a pure NT.
Can the eagles get a top pick for K-o-l-b Kolb Kolb Kolb =)
Oh yeah. I think the worst they will do is getting #25 from Seattle...assuming trades can happen and yadda yadda CBA stuff.
Can you describe the state of affairs for the Raiders secondary if they lose Namdi? I heard/read that Routt has been pretty good (?), but can't really say the same for the rest.
They would need a guy or two. And Nnamdi won't be back. Routt is a good player. Johnson is decent as well. Will need a #2 or #3 CB. Could also lose Huff, who I thought played very well. So a FS type also could be needed.
With the Chargers' pick at #18, there's very little chance that Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt will be there. So who should they take? Wilkerson? Carimi? Kerrigan?
SD has a lot of picks at their disposal and you are right about Jordan and Watt-both would be terrific for the Chargers. Maybe once falls, they move up a spot or two for the other. I like that move for this squad. Otherwise, I like Carimi for sure. Those other two don't get me super excited, but Kerrigan would be my choice of the two, as he would help right away.
Who's your money on for #1 overall right now?
Gabbbert...which is the pick I would make too
At #6 what is the safest pick for the cleveland browns?
WRs are always risky and their pick HAS to be a WR or a DLineman. Dareus will be gone. I see Bowers and Fairley as high risk guys. I really don't have that answer for you. P Peterson?
Hey Dubs! I am starting to think if Sheard is going to be around in the 2nd, the Bucs could look at some of the OL in the 1st. Or am I overthinking this?
That thought process isn't bad, but I don't think Sheard will be there for TBay's 2nd round pick.
I know Bill doesn't like taking OL in the 1 st but please Matt convince him one of these guys is worth it.I'm to old to be taking hits.
I agree that is need #1, but the two guys I see fitting Indy's scheme and maybe being there (Solder and Costanzo) are both in much need of additonal strength and might not be able to help out right away. This team is built to win now. Don't rule out DT with that pick.
Who goes first in a pro wrestling draft: Hogan or Flair?
The Nature Boy. Whew! Space Mountain.
Is Tyron Smith a safe pick at OT? How much of a chance does he have to become a bust?
He is far and away my favorite of the OTs. I think Carimi is safer, but Smith is loaded with upside-and could thrive on either side of the line. I don't see much bust potential there.
Do you think there will be major action at the end of the 1st or start of the 2nd round with teams trying to snag some of the depth on the D-line in this draft?
I see action in that portion of the draft for sure, but I would bet it is to get up for a QB rather than DL.
Flair...not even close, and Stone Cold goes 2nd.
Got out of wrestling before Stone Cold's time. My all time favs were the Road Warriors. Flair was 2nd though. The Nature Boy is just a total classic.
Which DE will the Giants draft in round 1?
LOL...nice. That is a team that can afford to wait for someone like Solder or Costanzo to develop a bit as a potential franchise LT. Ingram could be an option, but I tend to doubt it. Wild Card for NYG: Martez Wilson.
Flair had nothing on me,so let's get funky like a monkey!
Great blast from the past there! Nice! And yes, I saw that post that said Flair is Woooo! My error.
What do you put Carson Palmers' chances of leaving Cinn at?
M-Dub of the top five teams in the second rd, whom is most likely to trade back up into the first rd to select either QB Loccker or Mallet. And which team is likely to be that trade partner?
Any of those late 1st round teams prob would be excited to move out of Round 1-save a buck and add another pick. Just depends how it falls. We know 2 QBs will be long gone, but if say, Seattle takes Locker (which I don't see) or Ponder (which makes a lot of sense), then maybe Zona, etc start to panic a bit.
who you think the bears should draft?
Carimi seems like the ideal Bear. Pouncey has to be attractive too. But a DT like Paea or Luiget could be the call-and then go crazy on OL the rest of the draft and maybe nab a guy in free agency.
Any Chance Pouncey falls to Indy starting at guard until Saturday retires?
If Indy uncharacterisiticly goes OL in round 1, I think it has to be for a LT type.
Can the Rams rely on the WRs they have, or do they need to reach for one in the first round?
I am higher on their WR stable than most are for some reason. I would jump all over J Jones, but I doubt he is there. Green will be long gone. But you don't reach at that point. Go DL and live with that stable. It is a big stable, but just lacks a true #1.
No love for the Von Erichs vs Freebirds???
Very nice. Yeah, I was all over that too. Abdullah the Butcher as well!
Any chance the Pats move up? I'm tired of them moving down for "value." They need to move up for studs.
I have been critical of NEng for the exact same things, but frankly-I was wrong. This past draft was REAL strong by using their usual method. But, if they put a package together for a guy like Quinn to rush the passer? Now you are talking! Still, I doubt it. And they will use their high picks on an OLB and maybe a OLineman or two or a DE. And again, they will be a super strong team.
Is it realistic to think the Falcons' options at #27 will be Justin Houston, Jonathan Baldwin, and Torrey Smith? If that's the case, who should Atlanta pick?
You know who I would take over all those guys? Kyle Rudolf. Will be quality WRs with speed in Round 2.
Would you pick Cam Jordan or Tyron Smith for the Boys at 9?
I see 3 targets for Dallas: Those two guys and Prince. I think I go Prince first of that crew. Then Smith. Jordan last. But I really am very high on Jordan and R Ryan would love everything he could bring to the table in his multiple front.
I'm sure the Redskins are looking to trade down from #10.
You would think, but they are a tough team to predict. J Jones might be too tasty to pass on. But wow, do they have a ton of needs. Accumulate draft picks!
What are the Titans going to do at #8?
I think Fairley might fall into their lap. Then you just take him. If not, it might be Quinn-and again, you just take him.
Do you think Bruce Carter is a good fit at inside linebacker in a 3-4?
Could maybe pull it off if protected well as the WILB, but he is a better fit as a pure OLB in the 4-3. 2nd round to the Saints?
Sure it worked for the Pats' this year - but should we just ignore Maroney, C. Jackson, Butler, etc. "Value" = undersized guys, or guys with character/health concerns who call.
I hear ya. Far from perfect. But they do have one of the very best rosters in the league and have employed this strategy for some time now-and usually are not real active in adding free agents. Having Brady helps though...
Abdullah was in DIRE need of a bro / manzeer, Matt....
Oh, was he ever! Worse than Andre Smith!
Do you see the Cards drafting another QB in this draft? I hope they don't with Hall & Skelton already on the roster. Im all in favor of them grabbing Bulger, McNabb, or Alex Smith when free agency opens up.
I have no faith in Hall, but Skelton might be a guy. I would take Gabbert in a second though-but he won't be there. Wouldn't risk it on Newton. Again, this is a team with a ton of needs. If they looked to address those (V Miller in round 1) and sign a guy like Bulger while evaluating Skelton for another year, I wouldn't be critical.
Wasn't their defense still in the mid 20s last year? Give me elite talent over the 5'7 "high IQ" CB anyday
NEng's Pass D was horrific for the first half of the season and then got quite good the second half of the season-and they did lose their best (at the time) CB in L Bodden before the season. McCourty is a stud.
How do you like the futures of Sean Weatherspoon and William Moore in Atlanta? Two Missouri Tigers!
I like both and both fit what that D wants to do. I see Moore making a lot of plays-esp coming downhill. Weatherspoon gives them much needed athletic ability and versatility. Good picks.
Is Carolina looking to trade down? They could use multiple picks and now that there will be a rookie wage scale, it should be easier.
They HAVE to explore that option, esp without a 2nd round pick. But who is the guy that everyone wants so bad that it will make a team move up to #1?
Do the new kickoff rules limit how much return skills facter into draft status of position players?
Lessens it slightly. Of course it doesn't influence those who return punts though.
The Chargers should package the 18th pick with another pick to move up to the 15th pick (the dolphins) to bypass the Patriots (17th) to get a 3-4 DE.
Doesn't sound unreasonable-but only for Watt or Jordan.
To Marc (MA) and Zack (CT)...1. Don't whine! The Pats are contenders every year doing it that way. 2. I bet all that changes once rookies start being paid appropriately.
Both excellent points Kim. And-oh by the way-with the exception of Brady (who is very much in his prime) this is a VERY young core of talent. That D has to improve as guys like Cunningham improve...and Warren and Bodden return. The Pats are not going away any time soon.
Can you give us your assessment of how Hines Ward has looked compared to his peers from previous shows on Dancing with the Stars?
I am from PGH as many of you know and there is a big stir in town about 86 on Dancing with the Stars. I didn't watch last night, but did see his first two performances-and am rooting for him. However, that 20 mins or so is the only DWTS I have ever seen in my life-so no comparisons from me. You Go Eight Six.
Should I move up to the first round of the draft?
For who? Don't just move up to move up. Who is the target? Could see a guy like J Smith being extremely appealing for Oak. Or an OT once that runs starts. Locker? Mallet?
Folks, I am out. Great stuff. Have a great day. Stop back next week and check out the Football Today podcast.
