Chat with Bill WIlliamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Gabe (Houston)

How far could the Broncos drop and still get an elite defensive player? (Dareus, Peterson...maybe Fairley & Bowers)

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

Dareus will be gone early. Peterson and Fairley could may be had in 5-7 range and Bowers could drop out of the top 10 because of health concerns.

charles beddick (lancaster,pa)

what picks will it take sd to move in to top 10 foe either von miller or c. jordon

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I think Miller will go in the top five. Probably take No. 18 and two seconds to get up to top 10.

Clint G. (Midland, TX)

You've talked abut the love Kaepernick is getting from AFC West teams. Is it a concern that he played in the "pistol"? I know that Gabbert and Newton played in spread formations and that has some scouts concerned.

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

There's always concern about college quarterbacks making the transiiton to the pro game. But Kaepernick wouldn't be expected to play right away, so he'd have time to develop.

D (Portland, OR.)

Dalton to Oakland. What do you think? As an added bonus, if they do pick him I can dust off my Chuckie Doll from the Gruden days.

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

He's smart, polished and he's a winner. But he doesn't have the big arm Al Davis covets. But I think he'd be worth considering.

D (Portland, OR)

What do you think, Oakland trades either their 2012 2nd or 3rd round pick to Green Bay for Matt Flynn. I like him. He's young and a winner.

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Not a bad idea. He played well against the Pats. He'd be a good plaer to groom.

Cliff (Geigle)

With all the talk about Nnamdi A. leaving Oakland via free agency, and given the CB position (especially in Oaklands Man Coverage scheme) is such a demanding position in the "Air First NFL", do you believe the Raiders have enough talent in Routt, C. Johnson, McFadden, and Ware, to succeed.

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

He'd need help if Nnamdi leaves. Expect the Raiders to address the position in the draft just in case.

Steve (Fallbrook, Ca)

It is speculated the Chargers are looking for a pass rusher early in the draft this year. To me, their middle defense looked vulnerable to the run last year at times. With Oakland and KC in the division, I think they need to shore up against the run as well. Are there any prospects that you consider a good fit at either inside line backer or safety they could nab in the second or third rounds? Or am I way off here?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Yes, they got pushed around at times by physical run games. Oakland really ate up the Chargers at timnes. They could use to get bigger and tougher in the middle.

Nick (Colorado)

Any chance Jared Allen comes back to Kansas City in the near future?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Don't see that one happening.

Lance (NM)

Hey Bill! Do you think the Chiefs will trade down a time or two to get more picks this year and/or next year? The Pats have always been stockpilers of picks, and I'm wondering if Scott Pioli feels the Chiefs are good enough to start doing it. Plus since a new CBA will come with a rookie scale, next years' first (and even second) rounders may be cheaper than this years' picks. Any thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Yes, I can see the Chiefs trading down. Their needs are pretty flexible so I could see a trade down from 21 to the 25-30 range.

Darrell Bossie (Dallas)

Do you think Al Davis will have another great draft or reach for someone like Locker?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

He'd have to trade up to reach for Locker. Getting Locker at No. 48 would be a steal.

Trevor (Ny)

Last night you answered a question in your mailbag about the Pats trading their first 4 picks to Denver for the #2 pick. What do you think the chances of that actually happening are? I know New England likes to have a lot of picks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

It's all up to New England. It would have to fall in love with someone at the top of the draft.

Aaron Mills (McMechen, WV)

Do you think we will see the Raiders back on prime time tv a few times this year after an improved season. They have the star power to attract viewers.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Yeah, I'd expect a Monday nigth game or two.

Greg Durst (champaign, il.)

Bill, I was intrigued by a comment a poster made the other day, regarding his response to the whole Denver QB search merry go round. He didn't weigh in on what the he thought the search meant. Instead he was appaled by the disregard and disrespect shown to Tebow in all of this. I wanted to solicit your opinion on this. Do you think he is right? Does Tebow deserve this after just three pro games and practically no snaps with the 1st team until that time?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Tebow is not Brady. He's not even Jay Cutler. He's played three games. If the Broncos aren't sold on him, it's up to Tebow to change their opinion. That's life as an unproven player.

Kyle (303)

Broncos over/under 7 wins

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Right now, I say under.

Andy (Newport)

Do you see San Diego and New England in a bidding war to trade up to 10 if Quinn drops? SD and NE both have needs in their defense. Both have similar first round picks (17 and 18). Both have two second round picks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Yeah, but the Pats have No. 27 too. That's a lot of trading power.

Andrew Baker (Tupelo)

What do you think about Kolb to the Raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

That wouldn't work this year. Maybe last year, but the Raiders aren't going to give up the farm for a QB. They'll see what they have in Campbell.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

With the new Kickoff rule in place, has Darren Sproles market value gone down enough for him to be viable option to return to the chargers, if he leaves how do you expect the chargers to deal with his role?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Chargers coach Norv Turner has said he thinks the new rules hurt good returners, so I think it does lessen the Chargers' need to give Sproles big money. They are looking at Troy's Jernigan, who could fill that role.

Kevin (Mile High)

Should the Broncos be looking at Quinn @ #2, or that too early?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Probably too early.

Kasey (Bismarck, ND)

If you were drafting for the chiefs what do you think their biggest need is. NT, or Pass Rusher?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Passs rusher, OL, DT, WR.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

First 3 picks in the draft are going to be _____.

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

Just a guess: Newton, Dareus, Gabbert.

Keith (Florida)

Hey Bill, thanks for the chat.I came away real impressed with the play of Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessy last year for the Raiders. With Seymour, Kelly, Henderson and Wimbley all returning, how good do think Oakland's defensive line can be this coming season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Thanks, Keith .. It's a strong suit of the team. Talented, aggresive and tough. It sets the tone for the defense.

Lance (NM)

Chiefs over/under 9 wins

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Over

Kyle L. (C/S Colo.)

Bill great blog... The Broncos have several needs on D, but it seems to me that Xanders Fox And The Duke ae not concerned about the safteys...Will it be Dawkins and Hill again? They wont cut it...

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

They are looking at safeites. UCLA's Moore or Oklahoma's Carter could be targets.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Seen a lot of mock drafts with the Broncos taking a TE in the 2nd round. Doesn't that strike you as a luxury they can't afford? I'd say Keep It Simple Stupid, and draft defense with the first 3 picks...

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

They ened a playmaker at tight end, but going defense wouldn't hurt. Maybe if Dnever stockpiles picks, it could add a TE early. This all makes the Scheffler trade even more lame than it was.

Michael (Buffalo)

Any chance that Denver trades Tebow for a draft pick because Elway doesn't sound like he likes him.

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

What would his value be, though? He as the No. 25 pick last year. I don't they they'd get a top-50 pick for him now.

Disinterested Gorilla (San Diego Zoo)

What is your take on the kid from Reno? Do you see him going first or second round? With Harbaugh driving this might be a good fit. "Nobody better kid, we'll all night long, all night long".

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I like him. I think he's a good project for down the road.

Chris (Texas)

DO the chargers have any shot at Von Miller or J. Jones?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

They'd both require trade ups. Miller to five or so and Jones to 10-13.

Patrick P (Louisiana)

Say Marcell Dareus goes to Carolina at #1, am I the next logical choice or does Denver drop down (if possible) or do they reach on another D-lineman? I would look good across from Mr. Bailey.

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

I think they'd take Miller. Denver could, though, trade down and take Peterson in No. 5-7 range.

Disinterested Gorilla (San Diego Zoo)

What do you see as major needs in SD??

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Pass rusher, RT, WR, S

Kim Deal (CA)

Bill, what kind of Offense does Hue Jackson run? Thanks!

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

It's a power offense. In-your-face aggresive, heavy with runs and vertical passes. Fun offense to watch.

Raider Rod (Arizona)

I hear Raiders are looking at OL, CB and Qb with 2 nd pick any other positions you might add?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Those are probably the first areas Oakland looks at.

mike (kc mo)

do you think kc will adress a pass rusher first and who might it be also do you see them adressing the qb and what pick might they use?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

I think pass rusher is where KC will look first. They could start looking at Qb in 3-4 rounds. Stanzi in the fourth?

Casey (SD)

What are your thoughts on Aldon Smith Playing in a 3/4?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

He's versatile, but I see 3-4 teams being very comfortable with what he can do.

Greg (Oakland)

Do you see the Raiders going after Mallett? He is slow, sloth like really. Yes he has a good arm, but would he be able to withstand the all out blitz schemes?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I think his huge arm will attract Oakland. If he's there at No. 48, it's a possibility.

Zack (CT)

Think McDaniels ever gets a 2nd chance as HC? If it comes he won't have 100% control like in Denver right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I don't think he'll ever get full control again. But if the Rams become a big winner, I could see him get a chance. He is good on the field, but he's bad in the front office,

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I don't think he'll ever get full control again. But if the Rams become a big winner, I could see him get a chance. He is good on the field, but he's bad in the front office,

Disinterested Gorilla (San Diego Zoo)

Where do you have Cam Newton going? He missed on 11 of 21 attempts at the combines....................to wide open receivers. Isn't this concerning?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

There's no sure thing about him. But I think Carolina pulls the trigger and takes him.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

So I guess Richard Quinn doesn't qualify as a playmaking TE? Thanks for that pick too, McDaniels...

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

Yeah, that was another beauty. Did you know Pittsbrugh got Mike Wallace from a pick Denver traded to move up to get Quinn with the last pick of the second round? Quinn said that he thought he'd go in the fifth round. He was probably right.

Latim (Los Angeles, CA)

Bill is it right that player trades can't happen on draft day? Won't that limit the kinds of trades we have often seen?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

If the lockout isn't settled by the then, exisitng picks can not be dealt. Just current draft picks. There will still be trades, though, I think.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

How do you see the chargers ILB situation working out, how many of the 3 main ILB will return, where do you see the chargers drafting an additional LB to add to the roster?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

I could see San Diego drafting two ILBs.

shawn (barre,VT)

Hey bill!! Great blog,Have been a chiefs fan all my life,do you think they need another strong draft class this year to repeat as division champs??

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Thanks, Shawn, I think another great draft class would help keep this tema on the right track for the next several years. It's a young team that still needs some help.

Brian (Las Vegas)

Think the Chargers draft a QB in late rounds this year? Volek said he wants to be a starter again if I'm not mistaken..

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Maybe late. They did last year when they took Crompton out of Tenn in the fifth round. He was cut, It Could happen again.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Do you see anyone interested in trading with Denver? If Carolina goes with a QB Denver has choice of all defensive players but that might be the situation that encourages a team to be most interested to trade right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

If Newton goes No. 1, teams like Arizona (No. 5) and Tenn (No. 8), may want to move up and get Gabbert ahead of Buffalo, which picks No. 2. Still, it won't be easy. Then No. 2 pick hasn't been traded in 11 years.

Tony (Redlands, CA)

With all the talk of health concerns on Bowers, any chance he slips all the way to 18 for the Chargers? Or if he is still around at 12-14 that AJ would trade up for him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

It could. I have him No. 16 to Jax.

Ryan (Denver)

Hey Bill. Do you really think Jimmy Smith can fall to the Raiders at 48?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

That's where Todd McShay has him. He knows much more than I will ever know about the draft, but I think he goes before No. 48 even with all his baggage. He's a top-15 talent.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

So looking back on a draft-day trade: who got the better end, the Chargers or Giants? I'd say Chargers, but the G-Men won a Super Bowl with Eli...

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

We've talked about that one a lot. I say Chargers.

Mikey(Lacckawanna NY) [via mobile]

Bill, any chance the Buffalo Bills get the Shawne Merriman of old this season? do you think he still got it?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I hope so. Shawne is one of my favorite guys I've covered in this role. The reality is, it's been a long time since he has stayed healthy. Too bad, because he was dominant. Plus, he really cares. I know this: Merriman won't give up trying to get back to his pre-injury form.

tom (Kansas )

chiefs play gb, chi, ne, nyj, ind, pit, min, det, mia, buf plus division schedule that they went 2-4 against last year. no way they win 9 games.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

We all said no way they'd win 10 last year regardless of the schedule.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Great hour, folks. Talk to you next week as we move closer to the draft.
