Happy Wednesday! We've got another 60 minutes of fantasy chattage ahead of us. Second cup of coffee in hand... who pray tell, is up first?
Buy low on Hamels after last nights outing or you worried?
The Mets seem to "own" Hamels, and I always give a pitcher a freebie first start to work out the kinks. I'm lowest on Hamels of the Phour, but if someone is selling, I'll listen.
Am I relevant again?
You've had fast starts before... consider me cautious.
AJ, looking for a short-term (I hope) Ian Stewart fill-in. Do you like Bloomquist or Alex Gordon better for overall production?
I'll ride Willie for the steals for now. Longterm, however, it's Gordon.
Walden worth enough to drop Frank Francisco, Storen, or Contreras?
I'll take the young arm... especially since the move was made so quickly... over Contreras, who won't keep the job once Lidge returns.
Oh my goodness AJ, my fantasy team sucks, I'm gonna jump ship. I drafted all these guys and I want to drop them for one week wonders. Help! Should I drop this guy or that guy for this guy. AJ, don't you love the first week of fantasy baseball?
Indeed... patience and fantasy sports rarely go hand in hand.
Is JP Arencibia going to get enough starts to be worth while?
It's catcher, so the hill is not as high to climb... with 3 starts a week, his counting stats should be competitive.
Even though Broxton has been getting saves, he has looked shaky. Do you trust him or would you look to trade him?
I actually do trust him, because as shaky as he's looked, he has gotten the results. Dodgers really don't want to go to anyone else, so as long as the BS stat stays below 3, he'll be in there, day in and day out.
who to play at util spot while longoria is out on the dl... Beckham or Castro?
I'd go with Starlin for now... although either way you're going to fall behind in power numbers.
Who would you rather have in your last pitcher slot in a deep mixed league, R.A. Dickey or Ivan Nova?
I'd give Dickey a shot... Mets are playing better than expected offensively/defensively and knucklers aren't as effected by weather conditions.
Do we stick a fork in Jeter?
Not yet... he made so many changes this spring and finally has decided to scrap them all... Now if we check back in a week or two and he's still at .160, then we can talk.
Should I be worried about Hanley's slow start?
No. One week does not change things... especially because right now we're looking at "Hanley didn't hit the Mets" -- that's way too small a sample size to worry.
Should I start Matt Holliday immediately after he comes back or wait and see?
I throw hitters in there as soon as they come back. All it takes is one swing to make it worth your while, and an 0-for-3 won't kill you. Pitchers are different, because one bad inning can kill your team's ERA/WHIP for a few months.
AJ, is Fuentes worth a pickup for saves in Oakland?
Not right now... suffering from a blister and hopefully it won't be too much longer before Bailey returns.
Bourn, Gardner or Pierre? Moreland, Ike, or Freeman?
Pierre for me, simply because he's going to get you a good average to go with the steals. And so far, it looks like Ike - who is playing every day - will have the RBI chances.
AJ - Chipper vs EE for the corner infield spot?
Chipper for as long as his body holds out.
Waited on SS. Nishioka, Alcides, Aybar, Theriot or Hardy?
I like Hardy. Best chance at power and O's look like they might have a team.
What do you think the chances are of A-Rod finishing the year as the top 3B?
With a 2-3 week headstart on Evan? Pretty good.
Pineda, McClellan, or Beachy?
Pineda for the long haul here, though all three may be more of matchup starts.
Logan Morrison is swinging the big bat..you think his power will rise more?
Had him at 20-25 HR, and see no reason to change that call.
Jay Bruce or Austin Jackson?
Not a chance. I do like Austin to improve from his slowish start -- but he whiffs way too much, and Bruce has far more upside.
Good lord you fellas never answer my questions, guess I should ask better questions or something. But just in case, picked up walden what type of player could I deal him for?
I can't answer that, because your league dictates how much you can get via trade. Put him on the market, and see what offers you get.
Man, I lose Longo and now Dunn for five days??? Waiver wire replacements for either?
Guys like Aviles for Evan (obviously all WW are not created equal) So help me... Lastings Milledge is my fantasy kryptonite. And now he is back in the discussion.
Are appendectomies the new oblique?
I'm banking on "ruptured spleen" to make a surge by the ASB.
Hey A.J., Would you drop Uribe for Hardy? I'm only using Uribe at short and my league uses OBP and SLG. Thanks!
Not yet... see how Uribe plays with the new Dodgers infield configuration (Blake returns).
I can kidnap either Mike Morse or Garret Jones. Which will net me a higher ransom?
Probably Jones, since Pirates are all the rage and Morse has lost the pre-season luster.
Crawford all over the line-up Francona? Really? Really? Really? Let the guy stay in the top of the line-up and work his way through things. You can't citicize fanatsy owners for their ichy tigger finger if real managers already have them now can you AJ.
Mitch, I don't believe Crawford was cut. Most of the panic moves in fantasy are trading/waiving players too soon. Carl's still getting the ABs for the Sox. Not nearly the same thing.
Hey AJ...Lots of pitchers seem to be going only 4-5 innings in their first start, is this just a typical April trend?
Especially younger pitchers and in cold weather? Par for the course.
Pick two (please): Span, Tabata, Maybin, Fowler, T. Snider, Soriano, A. Jackson
I'd probably go with Snider and Soriano.
AJ, in head 2 head leagues daily leagues do you stream hitters and pitchers?
I don't stream hitters, but I do take advantage of my bench by making sure off-days are covered if possible. If I'm losing by the weekend I may use the "fifth and sixth" starter spot as a source for streaming... but generally speaking, I'll keep 7-8 pitchers on my roster the whole year if I drafted well.
is colvin worth a pickup in a 12 team mixed league? we play 5 OF and 2 UT. seems like he could play 5 times a week and hit 25HR?
Very well could... and (as we just saw) may spot start at 1B from time to time as well. Looks like they're going tot try and get him the ABs.
AL Cy Young award winner = Jered Weaver...thoughts?
He'll be in the mix. Certainly can't argue with the start.
What's your policy regarding benching stars early in the year? I have Tulowitzki going hitless every day while Castro lights it up on my bench. Should I keep the faith, or sit Tulo for a little while until I see some signs of life?
If you're forced to decide once a week, you should have started Tulo in Week 1. I have no issue with riding a hot player for a week to roll the dice, but eventually, Tulo is going to be in there for you week in and week out.
Closer situation in Tampa...everyone said McGee when the season started, but Peralta seems to be pitching in the ninth. Any thoughts?
Well, hard to pin down the winless Rays on any "closer" decision just yet. I'd not be concerned if I owned McGee.
Drop Emaus from my bench in a 10-team NL-only league for Cashner? We use QS and K/9
Not so fast, my friend. Cashner looks like he's headed for a DL-stint.
Are you starting Hellickson tonight?
Rays aren't going to lose forever, and if I drafted Jeremy, why not see what he can do. After Niemann's rough first inning, Angels didn't look that great last night.
The new dvd drops on April 15th. Pumped! Brian Roberts for Chad Billingsley or Carlos Quentin?
If you can make someone "expelliarmus" the Buzzsaw, by all means... go for it.
What's the liklihood Paul Konerko >= Ryan Howard this yr?
60/40. Personally, I'd rather have Konerko.
Indeed... to those who pointed it out. While we were chatting, Cubs did place both Cashner and Randy Wells on DL.
The "Buzzsaw"? Do Matthew and Nate know your stealing their schtick?
Not stealing... honoring their nickname. Rizzzzzzzzz.
Do you think that Travis Wood can finish a top 25 pitcher?
Not a chance. Dusty will manage to mess him up eventually.
Odds that Rauch keeps the closer job?
I think he'll keep it until June, but eventually, one of the other returning injured guys will at the very least get 50 percent.
Im finally showing life!!! Drinking the cool-aid? or am I just a Big tease?
I think you have an outside chance at being a top 50 guy when the season ends. More than that, your track record has given me no reason to believe.
That's the whistle! The twitter can handle the rest of your requests, and we'll be back on Friday for another chat. Check out Daily Notes for pitching questions! Good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
