Chat with Jon Anik

Jon Anik
  (12:56 PM)

Hi. Gonna clean out a few of the early questions now. I'll take live ones at 1:00. Thanks for being here.

Justin (Scottsdale, AZ)

Jon-love the chats. Do you think that ESPN will expand its coverage of MMA if the NFL and/or NBA are on strike this fall?

Jon Anik
  (12:57 PM)

Too early to tell. I hope so. I am by no means rooting for either league to have a work stoppage. But MMA Live is ready at all times to go 5 days/week!

Ben (LA)

Is Chael Sonnen a compulsive liar? What do you make of kizer's statements about him?

Jon Anik
  (12:57 PM)

Wasn't really surprised by Kizer's comments. Clearly, one party is not telling the truth and it appears to be Sonnen.

The Serb (CHICAGO)

Guesstimate the next challenger to the Faber/Cruz winner.

Jon Anik
  (12:58 PM)

Chad Mendes, followed by the winner of the fight between Kenny Florian and Diego Nunes.

Dustin (Miami)

Will Paul Daley be let back in the ufc if he wins the belt?

Jon Anik
  (12:58 PM)

Highly doubt it. Not right away, at least. Dana White seems determined to stand by his word of a lifetime ban for Daley.

Ames (Jersey city)

Doesn't it seem like gsp is scared to move up. We see bj move up and not fuss. I even remember reading an article about machida wanting move to hw to face brock

Jon Anik
  (12:59 PM)

I definitely wouldn't classify it as fear. But, if GSP doesn't think a fight with Anderson Silva at 185 is winnable or the right thing for his career/legacy, he won't do it. I've always said a mega-fight between St-Pierre and Silva is all about GSP. If he wants it to happen, it'll happen.

A Tradition (Unlike Any Other)

Which "young gun" will make a charge is week at the Masters? I like Fowler but dont think he has the nerves.

Jon Anik
  (1:00 PM)

I like the Italian, Francesco Molinari.

Dave (Philly)

On record, Jardine for the upset. Do you think he has a chance?

Jon Anik
  (1:00 PM)

One of our ESPN MMA experts picked Jardine to win. I just don't see it. I think Mousasi will destroy him on the feet and get the early finish.

Matt (NJ)

Happy Wednesday Chost! Penn and Rua: who would you like to see them fight next?

Jon Anik
  (1:01 PM)

I'd like to see B.J. Penn fight Carlos Condit. As for Shogun Rua, there are far more options. Rich Franklin is a possibility. Could do a rematch with Forrest Griffin. And Stephan Bonnar is still lurking w/o an opponent.

Jr (Arizona)

Who do like to replace Fitch and fight BJ Penn?

Jon Anik
  (1:02 PM)

Condit or Anthony Johnson. They could wait to see what happens between Thiago Alves and Rick Story. But the UFC may not have the luxury of waiting until the end of May.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

I also would just like to say a Happy Retirement from MMA toCacharrao! RABJJ represent!

Jon Anik
  (1:02 PM)

Amen. Ricardo Almeida has always treated me with class. Wish him well going forward.

Amado (Mamado)

Where's the rest of your interview with Brock Lesnar? you said on MMA LIVE it was on espn.com and I didn't find it.

Jon Anik
  (1:03 PM)

I posted it on Twitter today. Sorry for not posting last week. You can follow me on Twitter- @Jon_Anik.

Brian (Cleveland)

I heard rumors that Jason Miller would step in for Chael Sonnen as a potential coach against Bisping, any truth? Any truth that Miller would become a UFC middleweight?

Jon Anik
  (1:04 PM)

Hadn't heard that rumor, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. It makes plenty of sense and Miller is certainly dynamic enough to carry a season of TUF. And I do think Miller will be under the UFC banner sooner rather than later.

Andrew (Orange Park, FL)

How far away is Mark Munoz from a shot if he can defeat Demian Maia?

Jon Anik
  (1:05 PM)

Not very. That would be a huge win against a definite contender.

Matt (NJ)

Any word on what happened to Fitch?

Jon Anik
  (1:05 PM)

Did you see MMA Live last week, bro?

Jon Anik
  (1:05 PM)

Shoulder.

Phil (Richmond, VA)

better submission the twister by korean zombie or the inverted triangle in bellator?

Jon Anik
  (1:06 PM)

I liked the twister better than this particular inverted triangle choke. But I would put Toby Imada's inverted triangle against Jorge Masvidal ('09) above the twister.

Josh (Texas)

Will Chael ever get a title shot again?

Jon Anik
  (1:07 PM)

At this point, he's just gotta clean up his mess outside the cage. I do think he has the tools to position himself near the top of the middleweight division again. But he's losing valuable time with all of this legal/out-of-cage stuff.

Pat (Staven, CT)

When will everyone stop making it such a big deal to fight your "teammate"? In the Marines we couldn't wait to spar against some of our best friends that we trained with constantly, and those were actually some of the better sessions.

Jon Anik
  (1:08 PM)

Fighters really are split on this, even though we always hear more about the fighters who don't want to fight their friends. Rarely do we hear from guys like Stephan Bonnar, who is more than willing to fight his training partners. I think the fact that Jon Jones and Rashad Evans are fighting each other will help the situation going forward.

Brian F (San Diego)

Over/Under 3 rounds in Diaz/Daley fight?

Jon Anik
  (1:09 PM)

Under. As you all know, Nick Diaz has always been one of my favorite fighters. When I want a friend or relative to get into MMA, I tell them to watch Nick Diaz. That said, I think Paul Daley wins this weekend. Call it a hunch, or call it me sick of going chalk all the time. But I like Daley by TKO.

JD (VA)

Thoughts on the announced Leben/Silva fight?

Jon Anik
  (1:10 PM)

Better keep your hands up. Those guys are gonna kill each other.

angelo (texas)

what did you think of alvarez's fight

Jon Anik
  (1:11 PM)

I thought Eddie looked good and I was surprised to read many media accounts saying how disappointing he was. From my cageside vantage point, Alvarez did pursue the finish several times. I thought his footwork looked outstanding. And he dominated 24 of the 25 minutes. Getting the finish is easier said than done, even when fighting a non-Top 10 opponent. Curran didn't really engage. If he had, Alvarez would've laid him out.

Franklin (Las Vegas)

How do you think Rampage Vs. Hamill will go?

Jon Anik
  (1:11 PM)

Better for Hamill than many people think.

Ainsworth (Dallas)

Does anybody think Daley really stands a chance? He has a punchers chance thats all.

Jon Anik
  (1:12 PM)

Oh, I think it's more than that. Daley isn't yet a 5-tool fighter...and may never be. But you can't teach that natural power. And I think he'll find his target Saturday night.

Matt (Ga)

Davis vs Bonnar next, thoughts?

Jon Anik
  (1:13 PM)

I don't like it, even though I recognize it is a possibility. Bonnar had to be the guinea pig against Jon Jones. How about we let someone else fight Phil Davis? I'd much prefer to see Bonnar in a more high-profile and more winnable fight against either Griffin or Franklin.

Josh (Texas)

Do you think Gegard will end Jardine's win streak?

Jon Anik
  (1:13 PM)

Hahahaha. That little 2-fight winning streak against schlubs? Yes, I do.

Jim B. (Savage, MN)

When will we know for sure about the 4 round, non-title fight, ruling? What do you think of it?

Jon Anik
  (1:14 PM)

I think the idea has merit, but I don't expect it to be accepted universally anytime soon. I would love to see a sudden-death round following a majority draw. But it'll take some time.

Veggie (209)

You can't teach 209, homie.

Jon Anik
  (1:14 PM)

Love the 209.

Goran (Serbia)

Hi, love the show! What you think Daley will do when Diaz get him on ground?

Jon Anik
  (1:15 PM)

Panic. Nah, I think it'll be tough for Daley on the ground. Hopefully, that has been the primary focus of his training. At some point, Diaz will be on the canvas. What he does from that spot could very well determine the outcome of the fight.

Andrew (Orange Park, FL)

I think Bonnar would fare well against Davis.

Jon Anik
  (1:16 PM)

I'm not saying he wouldn't win the fight. I just happen to think there are better matchups out there. I think Davis would be able to take Bonnar down and take him out of his element.

Roman (CGY)

People should stop comparing Phil Davis to Jon Jones. Jones is light years ahead of Davis in MMA. Even his wrestling is more effective.

Jon Anik
  (1:17 PM)

I agree with that. Physically, I think there are obvious comparisons and I do like Phil Davis' potential. But there is a decent chance Davis will never be as good as Jon Jones is right now. And you know Jones is still developing. Scary.

Kraw (Work)

Do you think we will see a UFC event every Saturday night in the future?

Jon Anik
  (1:18 PM)

Maybe 40 weekends a year. I think 52 is ambitious. The UFC staffers have families and lives to keep up.

Josh (Texas)

who's wrestling is better, Jon Jones or Rashad Evans?

Jon Anik
  (1:19 PM)

I think Rashad's wrestling is better. I don't base that upon his collegiate credentials as much as I do his overall MMA experience. It's close, but I'll give Evans the edge. Gonna be interesting to see if he can take Jones down with any regularity.

Jake (Dallas)

Shawn Tompkins claims that Hominik has faster hands than Aldo and will beat him. He must be drinking the Chael Sonnen dilusional cool-aid. Aldo will murder him.

Jon Anik
  (1:20 PM)

I just don't think you can fathom how good and quick Jose Aldo is until you've shared the cage with him. Hominick is skilled. He is slick and he is technical. Jose Aldo he is not.

Matt (NJ)

How do up and coming MMA fighters get discovered? Are there "scouts" in the UFC, Bellator, etc?

Jon Anik
  (1:21 PM)

Yes. Advance scouting is done. The UFC is represented at local shows all over. They have already plucked several former Bellator fighters, either for TUF or lower-profile fights.

Jim B. (Savage, MN)

What is up with your BOSOX? Time to panic?

Jon Anik
  (1:21 PM)

Nah. Just 2 games back of the Yankees in the loss column. Just gotta get that first W out of the way.

Kraw (Work)

Kenny had some MMA Live ring rust going on last week... he back this week again?

Jon Anik
  (1:22 PM)

Haha. I thought he was great. K-Flo is here all month.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Anyway you can put the full Brock interview on espn.com? Not everyone has twitter.

Jon Anik
  (1:23 PM)

I thought it was, bud. Try searching 'Jon Anik' at ESPN.com and it should come up. If not, you don't need to have a Twitter account to search my feed and find the link.

James (Idaho)

who loses first: Bones or Spider?

Jon Anik
  (1:23 PM)

You tell me.

Frank (Chi)

Orioles to win the AL east this year?

Jon Anik
  (1:23 PM)

Just don't think they can sustain it. But they've certainly got the right manager and a lot of offensive talent. I picked the White Sox to win the World Series.

Matt (NJ)

Lot of fighters are moving down to Featherweight...who do you see having the most success with the move?

Jon Anik
  (1:24 PM)

Crazy to see all of these relatively big-name 155ers taking the plunge. I still think Kenny Florian is the best fighter to make the move. My question with him is whether or not he can actually make the cut effectively.

Frank (Chi)

Id rather your Red Sox win it Im a Cubs fan

Jon Anik
  (1:25 PM)

:)

Andrew (Orange Park, FL)

Is Okami going to fight anybody?

Jon Anik
  (1:25 PM)

I think we'll have that answer in early May, if not right after UFC 129 on April 30th. If GSP beats Jake Shields and decides to stay at 170 lbs., Okami will fight Anderson Silva.

angelo (texas)

what do you think of TUF so far

Jon Anik
  (1:26 PM)

Not a great episode. I do like seeing Lesnar in this light and Junior Dos Santos is a dynamic guy, despite the language barrier. But overall, the episode was kinda weak.

Kraw (Work)

You ever listen to WEEI?

Jon Anik
  (1:26 PM)

I used to listen all the time when I lived in Boston. I hosted an afternoon show on 1510 the Zone and always dreamed of one day working for EEI.

jon anik Sr. (behind you)

son, clean your room when you finish chatting

Jon Anik
  (1:27 PM)

Ain't no Sr.

DaAshMan (Toronto)

Are you going to make the trip to UFC 129 in Toronto with the rest of the MMA Live crew?

Jon Anik
  (1:27 PM)

Unfortunately not. Barring a last-minute change, I'll be stuck here in Bristol voicing the highlights.

Karl (NY)

I watched Jon Jones win a NYS high school wrestling title in his senior year of high school. He used to do a cartwheel before every match. If he moved to heavyweight in MMA right now, would you rank him top ten?

Jon Anik
  (1:28 PM)

I think Jones would fare favorably against several top 10 heavyweights. But I wouldn't rank him until he actually competed at heavyweight.

Will (Greensboro)

Perhaps it was clever editing, but I thought JDS definitely picked a better team for the show.

Jon Anik
  (1:28 PM)

I got the same feeling. We will see, I guess.

Lasers (Mpls, MN)

Have you covered a death in combat sports before?

Jon Anik
  (1:30 PM)

Sadly, yes. I was ringside for an HBO boxing PPV in 2005 when Leavander Johnson fought. Despite leaving the ring under his own power, he passed away 5 days later due to damage sustained in the fight. It was awful to watch live.

JD (VA)

Does a W for Couture over Machida put him in line for a title shot?

Jon Anik
  (1:31 PM)

In theory, yes. But another crack at the title isn't what drives Couture at this point. He's excited to compete in Toronto in front of the biggest crowd in UFC history. But I think win or lose, it'll be his last fight.

Stoke (Oregon)

You know, this is really getting silly. I always have the best questions, then when I post a lame one you corporate shills always post it. Why is everyone who works for ESPN such a p****. Especially Cowherd.

Jon Anik
  (1:32 PM)

I am responsible for posting all of the questions, Stoke. Relax, dude. I get about 40 questions/minute. Doing the best I can.

James (Idaho)

With so many shows, how does Dana have any sort of (family) life? Or haven't you asked him?!?

Jon Anik
  (1:33 PM)

I'm sure it's tough. Even in my seat, there are a lot of weekend and night commitments that make it challenging to keep family #1.

Pat (Boston)

Do you think Mayhem Miller will be the first Strikeforce guy to crossover to the UFC? If not then who do you think it will be?

Jon Anik
  (1:34 PM)

I think that is highly possible. If he isn't the first, it could just be b/c another Strikeforce fighter finishes his contract and subsequently signs a free-agent deal with the UFC. As stated previously, I think we will soon start to see some UFC fighters cross into Strikeforce for a fight or two. But I don't think you will see any contracted SF fighters fight in the UFC.

Phil (Richmond, VA)

do you have any mma experience yourself?

Jon Anik
  (1:34 PM)

Nope. Just some boxing and kickboxing lessons.

Connor (Cali)

Jose Aldo is my favorite fighter to watch. The kid is a destroyer. He will be a star after he flatlines Hominick.

James (Winston-Salem)

Guillard is better than Siver. He won by KO in their fight

Jon Anik
  (1:35 PM)

I have Guillard ranked higher, but both guys are much-improved since that fight.

Cane (Rockwell NC)

Jon who ya got in a Bigfoot Silva vs Cain Velasquez matchup?

Jon Anik
  (1:35 PM)

I will pick Cain Velasquez against any and all heavyweight challengers until he loses.

yoda (texas)

if strikeforce folds, does dana bring masvidal over?

Jon Anik
  (1:36 PM)

I hope so. Love Gamebred. And he finally seems to be cutting down to 155 the right way. Big, talented lightweight.

Matt (NJ)

Do you think Rampage still takes MMA seriously?

Jon Anik
  (1:37 PM)

Yes. He may not have the requisite year-round focus to recapture the title, but he trains hard when he's fighting.

Josh (UTAH)

who is next in line for the LW divison title after maynard vs edgar?

Jon Anik
  (1:37 PM)

Anthony Pettis will get the next shot, if he beats Clay Guida. If Guida wins, I think the title shot would go to Jim Miller.

Tim K. (Chicago, IL)

How soon before we see Rampage-King Mo?

Jon Anik
  (1:38 PM)

Not exactly sure how many fights King Mo has left on his Strikeforce deal. But that is certainly a fight that has legs.

Jimmy (Des Moines)

Current popularity ranking of sports in the U.S.FootballBaseballBasketballHockeyNascarSoccerTennisGolfMMA?The list is arguable but where do you see MMA ranking in 10 years?

Jon Anik
  (1:39 PM)

NFL, MLB, NBA are the top 3. I think MMA will be #4 (in the United States) by 2021. Hard to quantify where MMA is right now in the U.S. I would say MMA's fan base globally is as big if not bigger than the NHL fan base.

MR (Houston)

GSP is scared to fight Spider. He's probably not scared of him, but he is scared to lose. If GSP felt like he would win, the fight would happen. It's the same reason Mayweather won't fight Manny.

Jon Anik
  (1:41 PM)

Or he recognizes that his strategy to beat Anderson Silva would result in a dreadfully boring fight. See, the hype for that fight would be off the chain. But, the fight itself would have a hard time living up to those expectations. And I think that creeps into St-Pierre's mind as well. You are right that he cares deeply about his overall MMA legacy and wants to retire without another loss.

Breton (Fort Worth TX)

Did you watch Fight Camp 360? I thought it was crap comparing to HBO 24/7.

Jon Anik
  (1:42 PM)

DVR'd it, I believe.

Paul (Houston)

Haha NASCAR freaks will reem you for those rankings!

Tim K. (Chicago, IL)

How does Ortiz get Bader while Bonnar is still waiting for an opponent?

Jon Anik
  (1:43 PM)

Good question. I'm sure the UFC wanted to get Ortiz back in there b/c he had a fight scheduled last month and was forced to pull out.

Wally Third Degree Byrne (Dublin)

Is GSP's fear to lose greater than his will to win?

Jon Anik
  (1:44 PM)

No. I really don't think 'fear' is the right word. Moving up to middleweight is a huge decision for GSP. The odds are stacked against him and, even though the fans are clamoring for it, it simply may not be the right career choice.

Will (brooklyn)

Over/Under: 2 rounds for Diaz/Daley.

Jon Anik
  (1:44 PM)

I believe I picked Daley by 2nd-round TKO. So, under 2 full rounds.

Stoke (Oregon)

Do you go to Deadspin.com on a daily basis?

Jon Anik
  (1:44 PM)

No. But I follow some of their people on Twitter.

Pat (Boston)

Has Bonnar heard anything about a possible next opponent?

Jon Anik
  (1:45 PM)

No.

Dino (Vancouver)

Is Daniel Cormier too old, 32, to eventually be UFC contender/champion?

Jon Anik
  (1:45 PM)

Is he really 32? I didn't realize that. It's certainly a number that doesn't work in his favor. I also think size will be an issue against these mammoth, modern-day heavyweights.

Ben (Nj)

Why cant GSP and Silva fight at 180??

Jon Anik
  (1:46 PM)

They could. Anderson Silva has said he's open to a catch weight fight. I guess I'll believe that when I see it.

Chuck (Baltimore)

If GSP wins in a boring fashion, it does nothing to help him (or very little). If GSP loses it does nothing to help him.

Dan S. (Class...lame)

Have you caught the Shields/GSP trailer? I love the upgraded production value in the trailers as of late

Jon Anik
  (1:47 PM)

Awesome stuff. Shields looking back in GSP's direction after they cross paths. Extremely well done.

Tim K. (Chicago, IL)

Is Bellator the only option for fighters who go between the US and Asia?

Jon Anik
  (1:48 PM)

There are hundreds of viable local promotions that allow their fighters to compete elsewhere. Bellator is certainly the highest-profile organization to allow it, now that Strikeforce is under Zuffa's control. Gonna be an interesting 10-12 months for MMA in Japan.

Sean (Columbus)

Hey Jon, I'm applying for a Legal Internship with Zuffa. Do you know anyone I should talk to in order to get a leg up?

Jon Anik
  (1:48 PM)

Best of luck, Sean. UFC's general counsel Lawrence Epstein is a good man.

Dan S. (Class...lame)

My Brew Crew: just a cold start, or reason to worry?

Jon Anik
  (1:49 PM)

They will be just fine. Nice W last nite.

Marvin (Los Cabos MX)

What's wrong with GSP staying at 170, continuing to beat up all his challengers for the next 5 years? If I was him, I'd decline the fight with AS too.

Jon Anik
  (1:50 PM)

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, provided the UFC can come through with new challengers. And contenders always seem to emerge. I'd like to see GSP vs. Carlos Condit. Wouldn't mind seeing GSP vs. Anthony Johnson. Not sure a division is ever truly 'cleaned out'.

Matt (Madison, WI)

You said Mendes or K-Flo/Nunes winner will challenge Faber/Cruz next. Mendes is 145 and NO WAY K-Flo drops to 135, right?

Jon Anik
  (1:51 PM)

My mistake. Thought the question was about 145s. As for the next bantamweight challenger, it's hard to say. Miguel Torres would be in the discussion with a win over Brad Pickett. Joseph Benavidez is a top 3 bantamweight, but he's had 2 shots at Cruz and won't fight Faber.

Ian (Birmingham)

over under 2 rounds for the dean of mean

Jon Anik
  (1:51 PM)

Under.

Phil (Richmond, VA)

any other espn personalities fans that we wouldnt know about?

Jon Anik
  (1:52 PM)

Most of the ESPN anchors who follow MMA do so casually. Very few of them actually order every PPV. Doug Gottlieb always seems to know what's going on in MMA when I see him. Josh Elliot definitely keeps his tabs on it. And Stuart Scott used to train in both Muay Thai and BJJ.

Rob (UT)

When is Frank Mir gonna be back in Bristol?

Jon Anik
  (1:52 PM)

Hopefully soon. Miss the Mir man.

Justin (SJ)

Do you actually think Mendes or KenFlo stand a legit chance vs Aldo?

Jon Anik
  (1:54 PM)

Sure. I wouldn't pick either guy to beat Aldo right now. But both Mendes and Florian would be worthy challengers and better-equipped to challenge Aldo than most of the fighters he has seen in the past.

Kenny (Boston)

Reunited and it feels so good

Jon Anik
  (1:54 PM)

So good.

VB (Denver)

Why do people refuse to acknowledge that GSP already does win in boring fashion? Jabs and takedowns do not equal exciting. For a guy who claims he really wants a finish, he sure doesn't fight like it.

Jon Anik
  (1:55 PM)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I respect your opinion. But his takedowns against Thiago Alves at UFC 100 were a thing of beauty. His timing/ability to read his opponents and dominate them is highly entertaining for me.

Paul (Houston)

Winning the fight > finish in spite of fan complaints

Jon Anik
  (1:56 PM)

Must prioritize winning over entertaining.

Bruce (Ohio)

GSP nearly ripped Dan Hardy's arm off.

Bill (Boston)

How good is UFC 129? Champs, Former Champs, Legends, P4P greats. I'm most excited about Aldo. When that guy is in the cage he's a pure predator.

Jon Anik
  (1:56 PM)

Killer card. Killin' me not to be going.

Shaun (Erie)

Would you take Cain over Alistar?

Jon Anik
  (1:57 PM)

Overeem is the only guy who would give me pause. But right now, I still lean towards Velasquez.

Stoke (Oregon)

On a sad note, my wife is threatening to leave me if I don't give up my MMA dreams. But since I'm undefeated, 6-0, I'm going to keep going. Screw her and my kid. Right?

Jon Anik
  (1:57 PM)

Wow dude that is heavy. The short answer is to never stop pursuing your dream. The shorter answer is you have a kid.

Kendrick Perkins (OKC)

Don't tell Rondo that I have a new bromance w/Westbrook.

David (Spartanburg SC)

It is killing us fans as well.

Jon Anik
  (1:58 PM)

Appreciate you saying that. Hopefully one day we'll have a presence at all UFC PPVs and other big shows.

Chuck (Baltimore)

Plus GSP destroyed Koschek's face. It's not like he can't do damage. He's fought some tough *censored*

Jon Anik
  (1:59 PM)

Good call. Even though GSP didn't 'finish' Koscheck, he might've finished his career. Kos still dealing with some nerve damage in his face. Scary.

VB (Denver)

Look, I'm not discrediting his victories or dominance. I'm just simply pointing out that his method of winning against Anderson is already his current method of winning fights. So he shouldn't be concerned about a "boring" fight

Jon Anik
  (2:00 PM)

My point is that he'd have to be especially conservative and disciplined against Anderson Silva.

damian (florida)

how long you going today? 2hr plus

Jon Anik
  (2:00 PM)

I wish, man. Busy MLB day here and I still haven't shot the NBA 411. About 15 minutes to go.

Matt (NJ)

How good is Mousasi?

Jon Anik
  (2:01 PM)

Damn good. And damn fun to watch.

Bruce (Ohio)

GSP may not finish fights but he makes elite fighters just look silly. You have to be impressed by that.

Kraw (Work)

valid point by VB

Marc (Malden, MA)

Anderson Silva's walking weight is 35lbs more than GSP. I don't want to see the fight, but if it's going to happen, let the guy take some time and reduce that difference.

Jon Anik
  (2:01 PM)

You can be sure that the only way GSP accepts the fight is with ample time to bulk up.

Stoke (Oregon)

I agree with the GSP backers. He's brutal and will finish Shields.

Jon Anik
  (2:02 PM)

Rest assured, GSP hears the critics. He wants to finish Shields badly.

Drew Fox (Riverside, CA)

Does the hour setback time on ppv help bring more mainstream coverage?

Jon Anik
  (2:04 PM)

I think it is a positive across the board. It'll certainly help the 1AM SportsCenter to have that result completed before midnight. And b/c roughly half of the U.S. population resides in the Eastern time zone, you will get more buys in those areas. Many of my friends are casual fans with children and early wake-up calls on Sunday morning. 9P-12A is far more doable than 10P-1A.

Dan S. (Class...lame)

JA, I'm a broke student. Of the announced PPVs what is the best value(on paper) for my $50?

Jon Anik
  (2:04 PM)

I don't know how you could not buy UFC 129. Don't eat, if you have to.

Marc (Malden, MA)

WEEI sucks, 98.5 is better.

Jon Anik
  (2:04 PM)

I was long gone by the time that station surfaced, bud.

Drew Fox (Riverside, CA)

Whats something fans can do to bring the sport of mma to the general public?

Jon Anik
  (2:05 PM)

Tell your friends. Sounds simple, but it's easier said than done. Help convert your friends and relatives into MMA fans. And have them watch and/or DVR MMA Live. Thanks in advance!

Stoke (Oregon)

What kind of car do you drive?

Jon Anik
  (2:06 PM)

One of the less nice ones in the parking lot. Ford. Escape. Insert joke here. Looking to upgrade next year.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

Have you forgotten me Chost?

Jon Anik
  (2:06 PM)

Never, son.

Dan S. (Class...lame)

Whichever car Kenflo leaves at the house for him. :)

Jon Anik
  (2:07 PM)

Seriously. That dude's car in 2001 was nicer than mine in 2011.

Wally Third Degree Byrne (Dublin)

Do you ever text and drive?

Jon Anik
  (2:08 PM)

No. Have done so a few times when something is urgent, or at the occasional red light.

Pat (Staven, CT)

CHost i'll sell you my suv, it's alittle manlier than that

Jon Anik
  (2:08 PM)

I was surprised they would even sell a man a Ford Escape. My twin brother, Jason, was like "aren't those cars for women?"

Ian (Birmingham)

why do they call you chost

Jon Anik
  (2:09 PM)

Twin bro came up with it. It stands for CHUBBY HOST. And I guess it stuck.

Phil (Richmond, VA)

what do the cohosts think about the dont text and drive line?

Jon Anik
  (2:10 PM)

The fighters really like it. Actually, I have yet to get a negative response. Best response was UFC middleweight Jorge Rivera. He couldn't stop laughing b/c he said he texted and drove the entire way that morning from Boston to Bristol.

VB (Denver)

More urgent than yours or someone else's life? Come on, Chost! JK, buddy.

Jon Anik
  (2:10 PM)

Hahahahahaha.

Ian (Birmingham)

who would win in a fight you or trey wingo

Jon Anik
  (2:10 PM)

Huge reach and size advantage for Wingo. I'd really have to stick and move like Onyx.

JL (San Diego, CA)

I know we're kinda beating a dead horse, but the point is no doubt the demand for GSP-Silva is high (look at the chat questions any week to confirm). That means by avoiding the fight, GSP IS tarnishing his legacy somewhat, just as Floyd Mayweather does by avoiding Pacquiao, even if the circumstances are different, most fans will feel the same.

Jon Anik
  (2:12 PM)

Tarnish may not be the right word, but if the fight is presented and GSP doesn't take it, that would certainly 'impact' his legacy. So you do have a point there. But I don't think the situations b/w Mayweather and St-Pierre are wholly comparable b/c GSP has fought all of the best guys in his division.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Stick and Move - Onyx...that's funny

Jon Anik
  (2:12 PM)

Yeah, kid. Hip-hop.

Pat (Boston)

And whats the status for NY getting licensed for MMA?

Jon Anik
  (2:12 PM)

You should be focused on the Red Sox.

Jon Anik
  (2:13 PM)

No firm update on New York.

Bill (Boston)

Any other inside information on Brock Lesnar that didn't make the edits?

Jon Anik
  (2:13 PM)

Said he didn't train at Xtreme Couture while in Vegas, despite reports to the contrary. He was gracious with me, as he always is. But truth be told, we were like his 10th stop of the day and I could tell he was losing steam.

Phil (Richmond, VA)

why hasnt mma gone to la and the staple center?

Jon Anik
  (2:14 PM)

Well, we were in Anaheim for UFC 121. But I'm with ya, man. I've been asking them to move the show to the LA facility for over a year. Bags are packed.

Pat (Boston)

Too busy with the Bruins to pay attention to the Sox. They'll come around, it's April.

Jon Anik
  (2:14 PM)

Go B's.

Drew Fox (Riverside, CA)

what final fantasy does your gf play?

Jon Anik
  (2:14 PM)

I have no idea, bro.

Wally Third Degree Byrne (Dublin)

I reckon Brock is just a big softy at heart.

Jon Anik
  (2:16 PM)

I may not go that far, but there is certainly a big heart and a caring guy in there. I also have a huge appreciation for how seriously he takes his media obligations. He isn't the easiest guy to get a hold of, but when an appearance is scheduled, he blows it out.

Shaun (Erie, PA)

Any word on a Pittsburgh show?

Jon Anik
  (2:16 PM)

Yes. I believe there could be a UFC Fight Night there before the year is out.

Matt (NJ)

Is Couture more likely to retire if he wins or loses to Machida?

Jon Anik
  (2:17 PM)

Hard to answer that b/c I believe he will retire either way. But if he wins, I'd be shocked to see him fight again.

Bruce (Ohio)

Did you watch the women's final?

Jon Anik
  (2:17 PM)

Yes. Was rooting hard for A&M b/c of that good ole head coach. He earned it.

James (CT)

Did you ever see Arnold Palmer make and iced tea and lemonade in the ESPN cafeteria?

Jon Anik
  (2:18 PM)

I saw him chipping golf balls on the front lawn, but wasn't in the cafeteria when he was actually shooting the spot.

Dan S. (Class...lame)

When the UFC comes to Milwaukee make sure MMA Live comes with, I'll buy you a beer

Jon Anik
  (2:18 PM)

I drink liquor.

Bill (Boston)

What kind of accommodations does ESPN make for it's all day guests like Lesnar? Do they get food and a guide, a room to chill?

Jon Anik
  (2:19 PM)

Lesnar's itinerary was so loaded, I'm not sure he had time to eat. There is a green room to hang out in and several areas on campus in which to chill out. It's an accomodating place.

Lasers (Mpls, MN)

How often to you interact with the other ESPN personalites?

Jon Anik
  (2:20 PM)

Every day I'm here. Many of the interactions take place in the makeup room. Josh Elliott and Mike Hill are my guys. And I am very close with a lot of the radio dudes b/c I started with ESPN Radio.

Drew Fox (Riverside, CA)

Whats your favorite liquor?

Jon Anik
  (2:20 PM)

Crown Royal. I like vodka, too. Goose.

MMA_DON (Jersey)

155ers rule. Bocek vs Henderson who u got ?

Jon Anik
  (2:21 PM)

Bro, I have no idea on that fight. Nor does Vegas. I think Henderson will find a way to do some damage and score enough points to win, but y'all know I'm bullish on Bocek, too. I may obstain when ESPN.com asks for a pick on that one.

gary (buffalo ny )

2.5 hour nap at work n still make the chat...awesome

Jon Anik
  (2:22 PM)

Great to have you. Last call starts now...

David (Spartanburg SC)

I just got Showtime. I have high expectation for this weeknds fights. Tell me, good move.

Jon Anik
  (2:22 PM)

Nick Diaz alone is worth the subscription. Card is outstanding.

James (CT)

Jon Jones is going to be huge for the sport. His Tonight Show appearance was great

Jon Anik
  (2:22 PM)

Agreed. Just watched it last night, actually. He has almost as many tools outside the cage as he has inside it.

Phil (Richmond, VA)

are you going to do more post fight interviews like you did at 127?

Jon Anik
  (2:24 PM)

Doubtful. Maybe here and there, but that is not necessarily the role ESPN wants me in. As an anchor/host, it's not the ideal spot, I guess. That said, I enjoyed it tremendously and will ask to do it in Toronto (b/c MMA Live isn't going).

Phil (Richmond, VA)

i meant 128

Jon Anik
  (2:24 PM)

Roger that.

Josh (UTAH)

How long before we see MMA live on more than once a week?

Jon Anik
  (2:25 PM)

No idea. Optimistically, I will say hopefully by July. Right now, we only have our schedule thru June. Fingers crossed.

Stoke (Oregon)

Are you an Eastbound & Down fan?

Jon Anik
  (2:25 PM)

You know it.

Kenny (Boston)

Can you hurry and finish this chat thing. I need to know if this suit makes me look fat.

Jon Anik
  (2:25 PM)

It's not the suit. Get a haircut.

Frank (Chi)

Im drawing a blank on good questions today.... any good MMA "nuggets" that you have for us?

Jon Anik
  (2:26 PM)

None I can really share, Frank. So much of the good information I get is off the record. I consider myself an MMA journalist, but I'm not really a reporter. So, fighters or media may confide in me b/c they know I'm not in a race to break news. Just stay tuned when it comes to the lightweight division...

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

What MMA fighter that you have interviewed intimidated you the most, whether it be intentional or not?

Jon Anik
  (2:27 PM)

First time I interviewed Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 in 2008. We interviewed him at 'The Ultimate Fighter' training center and ESPN had me stand on a stool. Pretty humbling stuff.

James (CT)

Had never heard you would be doing two shows a week as soon as July. That's great news.

Jon Anik
  (2:28 PM)

Nothing concrete, Jimmy. I'm just hopeful.

Brandon (Philly)

Chost, when is the UFC coming back to Philly?

Jon Anik
  (2:28 PM)

Looks like August 6th.

Dave (NJ)

Do you watch Lights Out?

Jon Anik
  (2:28 PM)

Despite several fans imploring me to watch it, I've never seen it.

Tim (Chi)

Why the push for Forrest Bonnar 3? Forrest won the first 2 didnt he?

Jon Anik
  (2:29 PM)

I scored the first fight for Bonnar. And I think a 3rd fight is inevitable. Griffin didn't dominate either fight, so there is an appetite to see it again. Or so I believe...

Bradley (Regina SK CAN)

Chost, if Daley KO's Diaz, brace for the all time classless celebration in MMA. He's got a history of this. How does that play as a champ?

Jon Anik
  (2:29 PM)

Not well. I would hope he would learn from past mistakes and exercise some restraint. I want to see a celebration, but keep it in check.

Justin (Austin)

Huge BJ fan. (haha) What do you think about him sticking around at WW. I know he can compete, but I have a hard time seeing him winning the WW belt. I still think he'd have a very good shot at beating Frankie if he went with a more grappling oriented gameplan.

Jon Anik
  (2:31 PM)

I just don't think Edgar is a good matchup for Penn. I do believe, if Edgar loses, Penn could move back down to 155 and recapture the belt. At 170, I think you are right. It is asking a bit too much to have Penn beat several guys who are just much bigger. Not sure I'd favor Penn to beat Condit, for example.

Jim B. (Savage, MN)

Is this ESPN's most popular chat? You do a good job mixing it up.

Jon Anik
  (2:32 PM)

Appreciate that, but don't think I'm even close. We are consistently over 1,500 questions/week, though. We are gettin' there.

Drew Fox (Riverside, CA)

go home anik and find out what final fantasy your gf plays dont worry my wife plays too

Jon Anik
  (2:32 PM)

Hope to have the answer for you next week. Man I really gotta get out of here. A few more...

Mr. Phil (Bakersfield)

when or are u bringing the mma live fan emails back??

Jon Anik
  (2:34 PM)

Not sure. We'd like to incorporate Twitter somehow. But now that we're on ESPN2...been almost a year, actually...but, now that we're on ESPN2, we have 23 1/2 minutes of total content. Can barely cover everything we need to, so it's hard to think about fan emails. That's what the chat is for, I guess.

Jordan (Round Rock)

What's up with BJ? Is he still on the card at 132, I bought my flights and I was hoping to see BJ fight.

Jon Anik
  (2:34 PM)

TBD. Hopefully word on a replacement will come soon.

Bradley (Regina SK CAN)

How many out of 10 times does Kenny Florian beat Chad Mendes? Style-wise for Kenny, isn't Mendes actually less winnable that an Aldo fight?

Jon Anik
  (2:35 PM)

Possibly. I think Florian and Mendes could split 10 fights. Huge edge for K-Flo in Octagon experience.

Andrew (Orange Park, FL)

How bout we just talk MMA for the rest of the afternoon?

Jon Anik
  (2:35 PM)

Wish that was my gig, Andrew.

Dude (OR)

I know GSP is a heavy favorite vs any WW and has destroyed most. After what Kos did to Rumble, and what GSP did to Kos, where does that put Rumble in a possible matchup with GSP?

Jon Anik
  (2:36 PM)

I don't think the Koscheck loss with hurt Johnson too much. He seems to have gotten over a big hurdle with the Hardy fight. He was disciplined, composed, made weight, and stuck to a gameplan. Given the lack of obvious opposition for GSP at 170, Rumble is in a good spot.

Jordan (Round Rock)

I just got here and am reading the transcript, did you say Chad Mendes is next for the winner of Cruz Faber, isn't he fighting the winner of Aldo Hominick?

Jon Anik
  (2:36 PM)

Already made the correction earlier in the chat.

Jon Anik
  (2:37 PM)

Where are all you guys when I get something right? :) Jon Jones mauls Shogun and I hear crickets.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

Rumble can throw BOMBS! DUDE

Jon Anik
  (2:37 PM)

He can.

Wally Third Degree Byrne (Dublin)

Is Dan Hardy being kept on after 3 losses?Hope so.

Jon Anik
  (2:38 PM)

I'd be surprised to see him lose his job. But anytime he wants to start training wrestling would be fine with me.

David (Spartanburg SC)

I have to believe this chat is in the top 20.

Jon Anik
  (2:38 PM)

Better be.

VB (Denver)

Jones > Shogun....way to go out on a limb and pick the favorite, Chost!

Jon Anik
  (2:38 PM)

Hahahahaha

Shane (OKC)

Will Fedor cut to 205 lbs or will his pride get in the way?

Jon Anik
  (2:40 PM)

Purely speculation here, but I think he is considering it more strongly than ever before. I think he may sit back and see what happens between Overeem and Werdum before making a decision.

Drew Fox (Riverside, CA)

Anik called bones to be a champion a year or so ago

Oleg (Chicago)

Where do you rank Fedor if he cuts to 205?

Jon Anik
  (2:40 PM)

Virtually impossible to rank him until we see him compete once at 205. Quite frankly, I'm not sure it's the right move.

Jr (Arizona)

Dan Hardy vs. "Lights Out" Lytle who wins?

Jon Anik
  (2:41 PM)

It pains me to type this, but I'm not sure I can pick Hardy to beat anyone right now.

Ferd (NY)

Do you think Mousasi can hang with the top UFC light heavyweights?

Jon Anik
  (2:41 PM)

I do.

Greg (New Mexico)

Jon, Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard has the tools of a legitimate contender, no doubt. He's one of the most explosive strikers in the business, and after destroying Evan Dunham in Jan, how do you see him faring this year? I'm worried about the Roller fight at 132, as Melvin's vulnerable on the ground and is going against a guy with a history of choking dudes out. Say he dismantles Roller... how many fights would he be from a title shot?

Jon Anik
  (2:42 PM)

Guillard would be right there with a win over Roller. But I share your concern for that fight. There was a window there where he might've gotten to fight Kenny Florian. Roller is a much smaller name and could even be a more difficult matchup.

Nick (Florida)

Will Faber be champ once again?

Jon Anik
  (2:43 PM)

I don't expect him to have an extended run as champion. But could he beat Dominick Cruz again? Sure. Tough fight to call. Thankfully, I've got some time.

Josh (UTAH)

If you could pick one boxer to cross over to mma who would it be?

Jon Anik
  (2:43 PM)

Kermit Cintron. Wrestling experience.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

Mousasi can't hang with wrestlers. We have seen that movie before

Jon Anik
  (2:44 PM)

He has put in the work of late. Remains to be seen if the results will be there.

Mr. Phil (Bakersfield)

money mayweather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Jon Anik
  (2:44 PM)

He ain't stopping a takedown, nor is he getting up off of his back.

edward (denver)

hey jon had a family night saturday and watched bellator with my daughter and girlfriend. but now my daughter is sick in the hospital, pray for me if you can

Jon Anik
  (2:44 PM)

Sorry to hear that. Praying.

Mr. Phil (Bakersfield)

not MMA related... but do u have any indication of what Floyd has been doing lately and will we see him fight Pacman.... ever?

Jon Anik
  (2:45 PM)

Floyd has been betting on sports in Las Vegas. I have major reservations about that fight ever happening. So sad, really. Would be the biggest PPV in combat sports history, no?

Tom (VA)

Plus, Kermit can't dive out of the cage, like he did the ring.

Bill (Boston)

Mousasi doesn't get the respect he deserves. Maybe after he retires the dean of mean.

Jon Anik
  (2:46 PM)

I think it'll take more than a win over a fading-fast Keith Jardine to get respect. But he's still got time on his side, despite all of the pro fights already under his belt.

Andrew (Akron, OH)

Thank you for being a mega stud!!

Jon Anik
  (2:47 PM)

Appreciate you all being here. If your question went unanswered, you can follow me on Twitter - @Jon_Anik - and I will respond by DM. MMA Live is back on ESPN2 Friday night. Details to come throughout the week on Twitter. Also, my good friend Stephania Bell is chatting right here at the top of the hour. Show her some love. Until next week, eat some wings and don't text and drive. -JA
