Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (12:01 PM)

Welcome to a special noon edition of my chat. Busy day and I appreciate you joining for the new time. So what's on your mind? Jimmie Johnson and pit road speeding? Dale Jr. almost winning? Two-day shows better than three? I'm open to anything. Fire way.

jesse (iowa)

who is your pick to win both the nationwide and sprintcup series races this weekend at texas?

David Newton
  (12:01 PM)

Hard to ever pick against Kyle Busch in a Nationwide race, but I'm going with Carl Edwards. For the Cup race, I'm going with Jeff Gordon.

jesse (iowa)

which race do you think was a better shorttrack race this season: BRISTOL or MARTINSVILLE?

David Newton
  (12:02 PM)

Martinsville. Record lead changes, lots of bumping and banging. Dale Jr. was in contention for the win. What more can you ask for other than to eliminate the 27 minutes for a red flag?

jesse (iowa)

who was martinsville's biggest disappoinment? Denny or Jimmie?

David Newton
  (12:02 PM)

Denny. This fuel mileage deal bit him again. That team has to figure it out.

jesse (iowa)

what kinda of finish are you expecting from david star saturday night?

David Newton
  (12:03 PM)

You're assuming I expect him to finish.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the First Driver to Part Ways with their Current Team in the Sprint Cup Series?

David Newton
  (12:04 PM)

I honestly don't see anybody significant leaving where they are, but if I had to go out on a limb I'd say Carl Edwards if another team can show him money and that they are capable of running for a championship. He's off to a great start, but if Roush starts struggling that could figure into it.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I was Just Curious why wasn't Jennifer Jo Cobb entered in the Texas Nationwide Series Race for April 8th? I thought she was going to race the whole entire Nationwide Series.

David Newton
  (12:04 PM)

She wasn't on the entry list but she will be in the No. 41 for Rick Ware racing. Did you not see my tweet earlier in the week?

David (Tucson, AZ )

All of the JGR cars finsihed well at martinsville, are their engine problems behind them?

David Newton
  (12:05 PM)

Hard to say. Martinsville isn't all that hard on the engine, mainly the brakes. Texas will be a better test.

Richie Mikemond (French Island, Wi.)

If there's no cheering n the press box, why do we have to sit through it on TV. I expect one day we'll watch DW. get an 88 tattoo during the pre-race show.

David Newton
  (12:06 PM)

Different animals.

David Newton
  (12:06 PM)

Different animals.

Bryan (Tennessee)

Hey David, who is really in trouble in points?

David Newton
  (12:06 PM)

Jeff Burton at 28th for sure. Anybody outside the top 20 can start worrying. You have to be in the top 20 and have the most wins of those outside the top 12 to qualify for a wild card.

JD (Gainesville, FL)

If I here the phrase "Texas Two-Step" again, I'm gonna puke.

David Newton
  (12:07 PM)

Texas Two-Step. Have at it.

Mike (MD)

Why don't Fox, TNT or ESPN independently calculate & show pit road speeds? Does NASCAR prohibit them from doing so?

David Newton
  (12:09 PM)

Because we don't have access to the sophisticated equipment NASCAR has. The speed is based on timing inside zones. So if the car's pit box is in the zone he can go 25 mph over it it were possible to the box, then the 14 or so seconds he's in the stall would be calculated into that zone and he would be under the limit. Does that make sense? Read my story on Jimmie Johnson apologizing and it'll make it easier.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 & the Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas?

David Newton
  (12:09 PM)

Edwards and Gordon.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think is the Best Female Driver that you have seen in NASCAR?

David Newton
  (12:09 PM)

Janet Guthrie. If she had Danica Patrick's cars and backing she might have made it.

Dale Jr (48-88 Shop)

Since only questions about me get answered surely a question FROM me will!Is Kevin Conway kind of like the Milka Duno of Nascar? He has a sponsor but seems like he has burned his bridges.... thoughts?

David Newton
  (12:10 PM)

Cute. Anybody with a sponsor in hand has an edge. As solid as Paul Menard has been he wouldn't ahve been offered a ride with RCR without his dad's company as a sponsor.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Is anyone keeping points stats with what would be the standings if everyone got points? I have not seen anyone posting that, seems like Nascar wouldn't want that to be out there.

David Newton
  (12:11 PM)

Are you saying calculating last year's points in to see where things would stand? Not following. If that is what you are saying I haven't done that yet, but have been considering it when we get a little deeper into the season.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

This is a crazy idea, what about running Nationwide races in a clockwise circle? The drivers would have less reason to run the races because it would provide less track time (in a convention manner) and it would be something different for the fans, I think it could be neat, shocked they haven't tried it at a Bruton track yet!

David Newton
  (12:12 PM)

A little farfetched. But I have suggested they run one segment of the All-Star race in reverse to see how drivers handle that.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Hey David, what happened to Stewart at the end of the race? He was running in the 20's, and ended up 34th or somewhere around there?

David Newton
  (12:13 PM)

Same thing as the past few weeks, he's been fading. Not sure why, whether he got caught up in pit strategy when caution came out of what. Honestly, Was focused on the top 5 at that point, but TS has faded lately.

Kevin (Texas)

With Texas being run at night for the first time (I Think) will the field be closer together and more competitive? Also, with the cool night air, high speeds/rpm, and 500 miles on a fast track could we see several engine failures, mainly has JGR fixed there problem?

David Newton
  (12:14 PM)

I agree with the second half or your theory. Not so sure the cooler temps will make it a more competitive race. Could be just the opposite. A few could hit the right setup and pull away.

Kevin (Texas)

Does Hendrick and Stewart Haas have an open notebook policy between the organizations. Because what Stewart Haas has on the Speedway tracks Hendrick sure could use it.

David Newton
  (12:15 PM)

Wouldn't say completely open, but they are pretty free with the sharing. And I wouldn't say Hendrick is far behind SHR on superspeedways. Maybe they've had better finishes lately but that can be deceiving based on wrecks, etc.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the very first female driver to actually race in the Brickyard 400?

David Newton
  (12:15 PM)

Danica.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, hope everything is going well. I know it's only 6 races into the season, but anything in the Silly Season rumor mill that you've heard that you can share with us? Last year at this time is when the Kahne bombshell and Shell to Penske deal happened.

David Newton
  (12:16 PM)

Nothing silly. Hearing Edwards likely will stay at Roush and we know Biffle is close to re-signing. Lots of top-name drivers with contracts up but most believe the grass is greener where they are.

Jerame (Cali)

Hey Dave!! Same question different week, who's your top five this weekend? and where will junior finish?

David Newton
  (12:17 PM)

Gordon, Edwards, Kyle Busch, Johnson and Biffle. Jr. will be around 10-12, as a guess.

Jerame (Cali)

As always dave thanks for the chats!!! Can't wait till next week....have a good weekend

David Newton
  (12:17 PM)

Thanks. Not going to Texas after going to the last three, but can't wait for Dega either. Just wish we didn't have two-car drafts to look forward to.

Jordan N. (South Dakota)

Hello Mr. Newton, have to head to work so decided to get my question in early! With Texas being one of Jeff Burton's best tracks, is this the weekend J-Bird and the #31 team finally turn their season around?

David Newton
  (12:18 PM)

Would be nice to see. He's had good cars but hasn't gotten good finishes. If he doesn't start getting a few his season is done.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

What do you make of all the talk about how Junior can't close the deal at the end of a race? Given how he has ran the past 2 seasons shouldn't we all be saying "good job for getting 2nd place" instead of saying he choked? He did get beat by "the closer" aka Kevin Harvick, whos car was obviously quicker at the end.

David Newton
  (12:19 PM)

Who said he choked? I agree with his decision not to knock Harvick out of the way. He will never make the Chase if he starts a war with him or gets the reputation his father had.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Given the momentum the 88 team is building, do you see Junior winning once within the next 3 weeks? He has some of his best tracks coming up the next few races.

David Newton
  (12:20 PM)

He's good at Texas and Talladega and Richmond, so I'd have to say the timing is perfect. Still not an easy chore.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

If you had to grade the HMS driver swap so far this season, what grade would you give it?

David Newton
  (12:22 PM)

Jimmie Johnson A- _ could have won two races were it not for Harvick's amazing comeback at California and speeding at Martinsville.Dale Jr _ B- _ consistency and having a chance to win at Martinsville encouraging.Jeff Gordon _ B _He's won a race and in the top 12 in points. He's almost a lock for the Chase with that win.Mark Martin _ B- _ Solid but not quite where he's like to be.

Tracy (CT)

I know some drivers bring their own sponsors with them and get rides because of it, but have you ever heard of anyone actually just paying out of pocket to race? Sounds like Kimi is doing that.

David Newton
  (12:23 PM)

It happens. We just don't hear about it at the top level. Most of the time that is in Nationwide or Trucks.

David Newton
  (12:23 PM)

It happens. We just don't hear about it at the top level. Most of the time that is in Nationwide or Trucks.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Kevin Harvick once went 115 races between wins. Do you think the 99 race losing streak Junior has right now really means anything as far as the overall picture of his talent level or career? Lots of drivers have had droughts in their careers. Is it getting overblown a bit?

David Newton
  (12:24 PM)

Everything gets overblown with Dale Jr. And you're right, not only has Harvick had a long winless streak he's won two less races, I believe, than Dale Jr. for his career. Neither has won a Cup title. The difference is Dale Jr.'s popularity.

John (VA)

I am really impressed how far Jr. has come from last year. How do you see his season playing out? What are the chances he keeps it up, wins a race and makes the chace?

David Newton
  (12:25 PM)

If you remember, he was around the top 12 this time last year. But I do like that he's getting better at the end of races and communication is good. The biggest difference is he's got a desire to do well I didn't see before. Not that he didn't have it before, it's just more evident.

Gus (NY)

I wasn't worried about the 11 until last weekend. If they can't get a top 10 at Martinsville, there are problems. Texas is this weekend followed quickly by Richmond, Darlington and Pocono so there's still an opportunity, but when do they turn it around?

David Newton
  (12:26 PM)

He was pretty good at Martinsville, leading a lot of laps. The fuel situation just bit him. That team is strong, so they'll be right there at the end.

Corey (Raleigh, NC)

Concerning David Starr, a better question might be how many laps he completes. Set the over/under at 0.5 laps (take the over if you think he makes the field!).

David Newton
  (12:26 PM)

That's the problem, not sure he'll make the race.

Karen (CA)

Just curious -- Thought racers were superstitious about the color green on race cars. I don't recall seeing so many "green" cars as last week's race. Are peanut shells still a superstition?

David Newton
  (12:27 PM)

Funny. Don't think drivers are as supersticious as they once were, although some driers do have crazy quirks. Haven't heard about the peanut shells, or have just forgotten. Refresh my memory.

Aron (Grapevine,Tx)

Very excited about the night races this weekend, what kind of preformance should we expect from RCR?

David Newton
  (12:28 PM)

I like night races as well. RCR has gotten its mile and a half program together, so I expect it to be a solid weekend. Wouldn't mind picking Bowyer as my darkhorse.

SAm (UT)

Think jj will rally back and win sat night?

David Newton
  (12:29 PM)

He easily could have won the last two were it not for a late pass and speeding penalty. That team has its stuff together, so they have to be a favorite any weekend at any track.

casper (martinsville)

we almost stole one with a 6th place car.. the only thing i could do after the checkers was power down a few more radioactive reds..hows the 88 going to fare this weekend considering he hasnt been consistently as strong there the last few years

David Newton
  (12:29 PM)

I'd say anything outside the top 12 would be a disappointment for that team.

Brian (IL) [via mobile]

How key is Saturday nights race for Dale Jr proving he is back? If he is back we will be able to keep up the martinsville momentum and have a great run

David Newton
  (12:30 PM)

Not like a life-changing race or anything. We won't be able to say he's back until mid-summer and he's won a race and contending for the Chase.

TG (PA)

After the race I was watching Q& A sessions on Nascar.com. No one from the media wanted to ask Kyle any questions. The silence was awkward. Did you all sense he wasn't in a good mood?

David Newton
  (12:31 PM)

What you didn't see if most of us were in the garage chasing Junior and others. And those that weren't were listening to Dale Jr. on TV when Kyle was speaking. It was an awkward moment and one that shouldn't have happened. Not fair to Kyle. NASCAR should turn the TV's off and let those in the media center have the floor. If you need Dale Jr. go out and find him.

Karen Lemke (CA)

Way to go ESPN. Love seeing Kenny Schrader and Johnny Benson on Monday's "Nascar Now" race review show. Wish the "other" so called leading station covering Nascar would change up it's media personnel. Be nice to get away from reliving 1980's as current group has done past 10 yrs.

David Newton
  (12:32 PM)

Glad you liked it.

Emily (NJ)

David, do you see Roush Fenway rebounding this weekend?

David Newton
  (12:32 PM)

Those cars love the mile and a half tracks.

Vinnie (ATL)

What in the world is going on with F1? Kimi in trucks? Are you ready for Kimi's one word answers? I would pay to see the media's reaction to his first press conference.

David Newton
  (12:33 PM)

Unless you're in one of the top two or maybe three rides the money isn't all that great in F1 right now, so drivers are looking at options. Sprint Cup is the best form of motorsports, don't you think?

David Newton
  (12:33 PM)

Accidently deleted the grade somebody asked about on the HMS crew chief swap. I'd give it an A so far.

SAm (UT)

Do you think Denny has gone into the slump giving his preformance at martinsville?

David Newton
  (12:34 PM)

The performance was solid. The fuel mileage was not. Can't blame Denny for that one.

RAY (ALABAMA )

HOW DID KIMMI TESTING GO?

David Newton
  (12:34 PM)

It was a private event and haven't really heard.

SAm (UT)

Do you think Denny calling out his team rather than blaming himself for having a leadfoot is disrespectful?

David Newton
  (12:35 PM)

Have you listened to Harvick call out his team? Sometimes it needs to be said. I think they have a respect now that everyone can handle it.

cam (wmsbrg)

where do you see the 88 finishing this week? 8th was solid last year but some 20th place finishes prior to that at texas

David Newton
  (12:35 PM)

Eighth would be solid again. Who knows, if they hit on something he could challenge for a top-5 or win.

Karen (CA)

Appears to me that what we're seeing between Steve Letarte and Dale, Jr. is "mutual" respect. That alone can improve one's self-esteem and confidence. Also, don't you think it's time the media (& Nascar fans) quit comparing Dale, Jr's style of racing to Sr's. He's his own man. Don't we all want to be viewed that way?

David Newton
  (12:36 PM)

What I believe we're seeing is Dale Jr. realizing this is his last big chance so he had better listen to everything he's told to do and do it. If you call that respect, fine. I call it a man driven to prove he can still drive, afraid of failure.

Tracy (CT)

Seems Fuel Doctor is now with Cole Whitt. Where does that leave Jeffrey?

David Newton
  (12:37 PM)

You tell me.

Tracy (CT)

Who pulls a "Sauter" and knows off the cup guys in the NW series? I think Stenhouse may break through soon.

David Newton
  (12:37 PM)

I like Elliott Sadler this weekend.

RAY (ALABAMA )

Do you think Danica will make a sprint cup start sometime this year or next year?

David Newton
  (12:37 PM)

I do this year. Not sure where yet. And I definitely expect her to be in the Daytona 500.

Nick (Owosso, MI)

Why no Nationwide races at Martinsville?

David Newton
  (12:38 PM)

They'll have on there in the fall, I believe. Just spreading them out to other tracks.

uno (washington dc)

Tires.... how do tires work for the race teams? are they given all of their sets at once for the weekend? or are they given tires to practice/qualify in, and then new sets for the race? 5 sets in all? 10 sets?

David Newton
  (12:39 PM)

They have a certain number for practice and then for the race. It varies on how many sets they get from track to track. At Martinsville I believe the number was 11.

Jerame (cali)

When does Junior get his win? This year?

David Newton
  (12:39 PM)

He already has won in a way. But as far as visiting Victory Lane, the next three are pretty good for him.

Karen (CA)

With Nascar proclaiming to be a "family" friendly sport, how do they justify all the sex (male) related sponsors (Extenze, Viagra)? Talk about double standards.

David Newton
  (12:40 PM)

Not really. They are legitimate sponsors who have just as much right to be in the sport as Goody's. Think you're reading too much into it. Hey, Jimmy Johnson the coach is in an ad for one.

PJ (Durham, NC)

Hey David, you can't run races with right hand turns because cars would hit the wall on the driver's side during wrecks, which could be very dangerous.

David Newton
  (12:41 PM)

Yes, I get that. But still would like to see 10 laps in the All-Star race run that way with no points on the line.

Alan (Columbus, OH)

Hey David! As a Kyle Busch fan, I am extremely happy with how his season has been so far. However, I feel like he always starts strong but once they get to tracks such as Michigan, Pocono, and Indianapolis (to name a few), he starts to really struggle. Should I be worried that he is starting too hot and will lose a ton of momemntum going into the tracks he struggles at or do you think the team will figure out how to manage at least top 10's at his worst tracks?

David Newton
  (12:42 PM)

No worries at all. What has impressed me the past two weeks is how he's handled losing the race at the end. In the past he would have flipped.

PJ (Durham, NC)

Hey David, I'm a big Gordon fan but haven't seen anything out of him at the intermediate racetracks to make me think he'll run well this weekend. Plus, you can't count out Jeff Burton wrecking him under caution at this track.

David Newton
  (12:43 PM)

Funny. Did you read my column on those two? If not, take a peak. You're right, he hasn't been great at intermediates, but we've only had two and one was two miles.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

Thanks for the info. Heard Allgaier was at M'ville talking to teams via Twitter. Any idea who?

David Newton
  (12:43 PM)

Missed that. Gotta pay more attention to Twitter I guess.

Nick (Owosso, MI)

Who lives in the houses on the Martinsville grounds?

David Newton
  (12:44 PM)

Never asked.

Jake (Colorado)

Todd Collins (Bears QB) Discussed his love for Nascar in a recent interview. After 17 years in the NFL, he has been considering a career in NASCAR. what do you think of this Dave?

David Newton
  (12:44 PM)

Hope he can drive better than he threw.

Phillip R (Oewnsboro, KY)

do you see anyone unexpected to come in and rough up the usual championship contenders?

David Newton
  (12:45 PM)

How about Juan Pablo Montoya? He's off quietly to a great start and if he was in the Chase he wouldn't mind roughing it up with the big boys.

Ben (KC)

Did you have UConn winning it all?

David Newton
  (12:45 PM)

Nope, Duke. And that title game was hard to watch. Like a Pocono race.

steve (indianapolis)

so what are your thoughts of todd collins the long time quarterback for the bears making the transition to nascar

David Newton
  (12:45 PM)

See previous answer.

SAm (UT)

Do you think team 48 found the speed they were missing last year?

David Newton
  (12:46 PM)

I'd still pick JJ to win the title.

Tracy (CT)

Why if pit road speed is say 30 do they get a 5 mile buffer? Why not just make it 35 with no buffer?

David Newton
  (12:46 PM)

Because they need room to play with because the tachometers aren't as exact as the computers NASCAR has. I think it's a fair rule.

Karen (CA)

Don't you think everyone's jumping the gun w/comments that Darian Grubb may soon be an ex CC? After all, even Rick Hendrick stuck with his driver/CC pairings (JG and Letarte) for 3-4 not so great years before making a change. I can't think of anyone better Tony could find, can you? And, remember, even Zippy and Tony had their bad times. I think Darian is good for Tony. Let's not forget, this is his first stint as head CC. They just need to keep working together!

David Newton
  (12:47 PM)

Can't argue with anything you said. Can't imagine Tony finding somebody better out there. Are we going to see his crew chiefs get the blame like Dale Jr.'s now?

David Newton
  (12:47 PM)

Can't argue with anything you said. Can't imagine Tony finding somebody better out there. Are we going to see his crew chiefs get the blame like Dale Jr.'s now?

Jake (Colorado)

why no major races in colorado?

David Newton
  (12:48 PM)

They looked at building a track in the Denver area a few years ago. Wish they would. Just have to schedule them in the summer.

jeff (colorado)

who will be your top 4 finishers this week

David Newton
  (12:48 PM)

Gordon, Edwards, Kyle Busch, Johnson.

brandon (tampa)

will the quarterback Todd Collins ever be a succesful Nascar driver

David Newton
  (12:49 PM)

No.

RAY (ALABAMA )

Do you think Danica ran a decent race a bristol before her temper tantrum? She was running 17th with only 2 laps down and 28 laps to go which i thought was surprising. I expected her to be down more laps how about you?

David Newton
  (12:49 PM)

I was very impressed. Said so in a blog. About half the field was a lap or more down, so she held her own.

Jake (Colorado)

Ive been watching NASCAR all my life. Is there anyone who can compare to Dale Earnhardt?

David Newton
  (12:50 PM)

As far as winning titles while not fearing being the aggressor hard I can't think of anybody close except maybe Darrell Waltrip. I still believe Pearson was the greatest driver ever.

Christian (Richmond, VA)

Are there any rumors on a 4th JGR car as well as who might drive it?

David Newton
  (12:50 PM)

Nothing lately. All depends on the economy and finding a sponsor.

Corey (Raleigh, NC)

What do the teams think about fuel injection? I see they may test in in practice for the Kentucky race this year.

David Newton
  (12:51 PM)

Heard that too. They are working hard to have it in place for next season. Lots of things for the teams and NASCAR to figure out. It opens up opporutnities to "cheat" with telemetry and such.

giovanni (dayton)

i've been a nascar fan my whole life, and i think the Bears quarterback Todd Collins will be a threat to win it all in the nascar world

David Newton
  (12:52 PM)

How many titles did he win as the starter for the Bears? Thank you.

Jerame (cali)

Karen, i don't think that has anything to with being a family sport. I'm pretty sure these teams will take ANY sponsor they get, even if it was tampax

David Newton
  (12:52 PM)

Agreed. Although not sure a driver would like having your suggestion on the hood.

Bob (VA)

Do you have any suggestions on how the pit road speeding issue should be addressed?

David Newton
  (12:53 PM)

Honestly, I have no problem with how it's handled. My only suggestion would be if they found a way to just have computers in each car that shows when they break the speed limit without timing zones. But I think you'd have a lot more speeding then.

Tracy (CT)

I don't really get why announcers care so much about the laps led statistic. You can lead 98% of the race but if you don't lead the last lap than no one really cares or remembers.

David Newton
  (12:54 PM)

Well, it shows who was dominant. But Kevin Harvick isn't complaining about his win at California when he took the lead for the only time coming off Turn 4 of the final lap.

Aj (Indy )

Stewart had problems with his car's rear end. That's why he stopped and finished in the 30's.

David Newton
  (12:54 PM)

Thanks.

David (AZ)

Will we see another fist fight at texas?

David Newton
  (12:54 PM)

Don't think Gordon had his fists balled. Think he came at him with open hands. Kung Fu style.

Tim (NHRA)

Do you see John Force taking yet another title this year in funny cars?! I havent been able to watch it lately. Will be able to now that I am back in the states though. Would be great for a dedication for his new grandchild to be.

David Newton
  (12:55 PM)

He's confident he can do it, and when Force is confident it's hard to argue he can't. You actually can't argue with Force. He'll drown you out.

Vinnie (ATL)

David, you asked me if I think NASCAR is the best form of motor sports? I love ALL racing, but no NASCAR is not the best form of racing. I have been to the Daytona 500 and Indy 500 among many other races, but nothing beat going to Monaco. Nothing ever will. F1 qualifying is the best. For those who haven't seen F1 qualifying, watch it. You are in for a treat.

David Newton
  (12:56 PM)

Have been to Monaco, but only for the beach and casino. Understand what you're saying. To each his or her own.

Phil (Richmond, Va.)

Hey David, Martinsville was awesome. I only ate three hot dogs this year, down from my normal five. My wife thought I had an eating disorder.

David Newton
  (12:57 PM)

Too funny. I had one and felt guilty for eating it. Glad you enjoyed. My favorite track to go.

Corey (Raleigh, NC)

Were you at TMS for the first race there in '97? Any memories of the first-lap crash that wiped out half the field?

David Newton
  (12:57 PM)

Saw it on TV, but was not there.

Spencer (Chicago)

Todd Collins was quoted saying "Jeff Gordon has nothing on me" do you think he is a little to confident?

David Newton
  (12:57 PM)

Let's see, Jeff Gordon has four titles. Collins? Enough said.

Steven (Kingsport)

The problem with Conway and his sponsor is they welch when it comes paytime.

David Newton
  (12:57 PM)

That can be problematic.

David (AZ)

If the winner for the texas race is a driver who hasn't won this season yet, who would it be?

David Newton
  (12:58 PM)

Jimmie Johnson or Denny Hamlin.

Matt Kenseth, 18 career wins, Kurt Busch, 22 career wins, Dale Earnhardt, Jr, 18 career wins. Take away one season for Kenseth and one for Busch and it is the same career basically. Jr. gets nailed for not being as good as Sr but that ditch is a mile wide, deep, and long i.e. lots of people in there with Jr.

The point I was making earlier on comparing him to Harvick.

casper (reality)

todd collins? really? todd collins?

David Newton

I'd like to see Kerry Collins give it a try.

RAY (ALABAMA )

Since the Masters is going on this week, who is the best nascar golfer? Who do you pick to win the Masters?

David Newton
  (1:00 PM)

Juan and Denny are pretty good. Dale Jarrett if he were still driving would whip them all. Hard to pick against Phil at Augusta, and I wish I was there. May take road trip and buy from scalper. I also have this gut feeling Tiger is going to get it all together. Covered three of his four wins there. His 1997 win ranks No. 1 in events I have covered.

Justin M (Boone, NC)

The past couple weeks the 18 has had great long run cars but struggled on short runs. This has put them in position to win races and given Kyle a great driver rating but has ultimately made them unable to close the deal. Do you think tis is something the 18 team should address or should they just be happy they've been in position to win these last couple races?

David Newton
  (1:00 PM)

Think they will take the points lead and be happy.

Steven (Kingsport)

As much as it pains me, there is one driver today who compares to Earnhardt, his name is Jimmy Johnson. Dude might be a sweetheart off the track but I'll refer to incidents with both Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers where dude punted them out of the way and they might be his best friends in racing. JJ doesn't give a crap what anyone things as long as he wins, ultimate Big E attitude.

David Newton
  (1:01 PM)

Totally disagree. But I will say I believe JJ might rank ahead of Earnhardt if I had to rank them.

David (AZ)

I know were still early in the season, but are you surprised that Double J hasn't won yet

David Newton
  (1:01 PM)

Nope. He's been close. All you can ask.

Have to run. Thanks for joining at the special time. Talk to you next week. Enjoy the Texas race.
