Good morning gang. We've got one hour of fantasy chattage up ahead of us. Second cup of coffee in hand. Who will cry for Captain Crazy Coat? Let's get started.
TULO!!!! Can he reach 40 HRS!?!?
He's on pace for... SIGH -- Tulo will likely hit a cold streak ere too long, but 30-35 HRs is certainly a very reachable goal.
AJ, is it time to let Contereas go in favor of a closer who will gets more chances and not have his starting pitchers always finish what they start?
That's why you don't pay for saves -- you never know which team will a) win and b) win close and c) win and need a reliever. Phillies will win more than not, but Doc and Roy will usually not need the help. Blanton is not going to get too many W's... so yes, other RPs have far more value.
I just traded for Mauer and he hits the DL, what is your take on him going forward?
It's a mysterious ailment right now, and until the cause is specifically targeted, it's hard to know simply because we can;t guess as to how long he's out. Once he is back, he's Mauer. It's just too soon to know when that happens.
What are your thoughts on Vernon Wells for the rest of this season?
Nobody has been worse for fantasy in 2011 so far. But hey, his BA is up 14 points in the last four games, right? Heh heh... who's with me...
Can't wait to read your book--primarily because I live my life by the same principal and have been preaching it for years. Is there any way to get my name on a wait list or sign up for expedited delivery?
Thanks for the excuse to pimp... I have a blog at http://www.ajmass.blogspot.com/ where updates will be posted regularly.
Time to cut me loose?
I don't think we've reached bottom yet for fantasy purposes, so certainly, if there's something on the wire...
Are you concerned about Jayson Werth's slow start?
I'm not really concerned, because this is pretty much where I thought he'd be overall. He'll get a little bit better in terms of BA, but this is basically who Werth is.
Any news on Andres Torres? Will he be back or hit the DL?
If he's not in the lineup today, I think the DL is going to happen, They were hoping that the day off would answer the question once and for all.
You buying Sam Fuld?
No, though every day he hits it makes it less likely that Jennings gets called up.
Are you trusting Gavin Floyd yet?
As a No. 3 fantasy starter, yes. Whether or not the Sox pitchers get wins with that bullpen right now is the main reason I hesitate to be more optimistic.
whats the deal with mccutchen?....CS twice, not hitting for average...i know the potential is there, but i was banking on the steals and the average
I think he'll be fine. Had a neck thing early, but as the season goes along, his stats will be there.
You said, "Once he is back, he's Mauer." He wasn't really "Mauer" even until this point. Any chance that was because of the injury?
Sure it might have. In any case, ten games doesn't make him a .230 hitter.
What's the deal with Andrus, his AVG is killing me right now?
That's why I wasn't in Elvis' camp in the first place. Yeah, he'll get SB when he gets on base, but how often will he?
When you say "No. 3 Fantasy Starter" in reference to Floyd, do you mean he should be the 3rd best starter on my roster? In other words, a guy who is good enough to be a no.3 starter is certainly good enough to get starts on my team.
Fair question -- I'm talking in terms of fantasy groupings of ten. He's in the 30-40 range, so he should definitely be on a roster... but if he's your top dog, you need to get better arms.
Heeeeeyyyyyyyy Yooooouuuuuu Guuuuuyyyyysssss....Is Zach Greinke gonna be the man when he returns?
I certainly hope so -- let's see how he handles the Triple-A rehab stint before getting too excited though.
AJ - what do Liriano owners do?? trade him or wait it out??
I don't know that you can trade him with that toxic ERA right now. I'd ride it out -- certainly if you have a bench, he should be there right now -- but he's too good to simply cut.
Please fill in the blank. Gio Gonzalez will end up a top _____ pitcher this year.
40 is as high as I'm willing to go here.
Am I someone you would try and target in a trade right now?
One-and-done league I only make the deal if I can get him for one player who I can spare from my starting lineup. I'm not locking up a two month goose egg int he hopes he's fine when and if he returns.
Daily Notes have Indians hitters at 1's across the board vs Britton.. but what about Choo? He's heating up and hits righties well, Britton can't be THAT good can he?
Part of that is small sample size -- the rankings are largely based on past matchups with the pitcher for the day. But so far, yeah, he kind of has been THAT good.
Are you a fan of DigDug this year? What kind of line would you settle for?
I thought he'd be better this year, but so far, he's not looked much better than the past disappointing seasons. I'll pass on Mr. Adam Jones since 18 HR and a .240 BA are not for me.
You have Ogando as your NUMBER 1 pitcher on Sunday, I was thinking of benching him against the yankees, what am I missing?
First time through the lineup against any team, I think Ogando is lights out. And the Rangers aren't likely to keep him in past the second go around.
My lineup has Weaver listed as the Probable Pitcher today, but he daily notes say different. Whose starting today for the Halos?
It's Weaver. One of the toughest things about DN is that we have to write them the "day before." As of when we published, Weaver had not yet been moved up.
Would you do a Prado for Bruce swap?
If I'm getting Bruce.
Francoeur, just a hot start or is he starting to put things together?
We've been through this rodeo before with Jeff... he's had ice cold starts and rebounded, and had lights out beginnings that led nowhere. Frenchy will be who we expected.
I lost Furcal to the DL without a backup SS and only have 1 waiver pick up a week. And there are only weak SS options on the waiver wire. Do you suggest losing a week of stats for a DL'ed position when you feel you can get more future value from another position?
I'd rather get something than take the zero.
Arencibia or Avila?
I like JP still... I know he's not getting the ABs we'd like, but I think he gives you more offense.
Chone Figgins is looking like my weakest link. Too soon to cut him and pick up a waiver flyer?
Way too soon, given he's back from playing (or not playing) with a bad thumb which is now on the "healed" side of things. Let's see how he works out.
Which pitcher interests you more: Beckett, Brett Anderson or Hellickson?
Anderson. If he can get a few more K's per start and some run support he's a top 25-type arm.
Whose good start are you buying more: Orlando Hudson or Jon Herrera?
Herrera. I mean, no way he keeps it up at this pace, but I don't think he's as Bonifacio as you might think.
What's the earliest a club can call a player up and get an extra yr of arbitration. Example Jennings TB, I'm sure the club wants an extra arbitration yr but when is the earliest they could call him up and still get that.
It's not a fixed date... it's more like a game of chicken. When a certain (pre-determined) number of callups are made, the line in the sand in drawn and it is then "safe" to bring up a player without the clock.
You starting Grady Sizemore upon his return, or sitting him to make sure he's healthy?
If he returns, he's as healthy as he's going to be, you know. Pitchers I worry -- hitters, I start.
Do you listen to the Fantasy Focus Podcast, or do you guys just talk about that stuff around the office... You seem to be saying that Herrera is Bona Fide as opposed to Bonifacio... OLAY!
As instructed: I download, but I never listen.
When you say stuff like "Adrian Beltre is 3 for 22 (.136) with seven strikeouts in his career against CC Sabathia" in your Daly Notes, do you expect us to bench him?
Those notes are compiled by our crack research staff at ESPN Stats & Information. Personally, I don't ever change my lineup based on the one-day matchup. I play my best and ride it out... but for those who do like to play the matchups, those are the stats they use. In the end: your team. Do what you want.
Is it time to drop Madison Bumgarner in a 12 team league?
No bench? I don't like the way he's been throwing at all... so if there is a waiver wire guy you've been eying, you have my permission.
We need to remove Mauer's appendix, stat! That's the only explanation for the leg weakness.
LOL. Now shut your window and get some sleep.
You never play the one-day matchup? So, if you've got, say, Marlon Byrd and Austin Jackson, and one of the two is on your bench every day, how do you decide? You're saying you wouldn't sit someone who's facing an ace and start someone facing a gascan?
Sure... but more often than not, people use the DN and bench a Kemp (1-for-10 against pitcher X) for Travis Buck (4-7 against pitcher Y). That's silliness. Two 50-50 guys, yeah, you can play the stats-based hunch.
Carl Crawford for Nelson Cruz....I like Cruz's potential but the injury potential is there. Who do you like more?
I'm giving Carl a little more time.
Phil Coke for real? He's looked sharp and the K ability is there.
Not sold on him yet as more than a spot-starter.
Taking Halladay out of the conversation who are your next best 3 SP's on the season?
Factoring in the starts so far? Lee, Haren, Josh Johnson
Jurrjens worth owning in a 10 team h2h league? Drop Holland or Peavy for him?
No, if you've waited for Peavy this long, might as well hang in there. And I like Holland for the next month at least.
I just k'd 15 and my era/whip are crazy. So disappointed in your AJ.
You'd be next... at that point, we're kind of splitting hairs.
That's the whistle... time to fly... catch me on Twitter... I try to answer as many questions as I can there as well... until next week, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
