Chat with Bill WIlliamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Patrick (KCMO)

In a recent post you wrote that you think Muhamed Wilkerson is an option for the Chiefs. What position would he be playing on our line with Dorsey and Jackson penciled in at the end positions? All reports are he is a very versatile player.

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

He's probably plug the middle of the line. He can move around, which is important in a 3-4.

Josh (Kansas City)

Hi Bill, what do you think the chances are of the Chiefs making the playoffs again?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Storng. I know the sked is tougher, but this is a good, young team. If Cassel doesn't take a step back, the Chiefs should be in good shape.

humble gorilla (antioch, ca)

In a recent interview, GM AJ Smith said that the Chargers should have been a 12-4 team in 2010. I couldn't help thinking that San Diego definitely would have been 12-4 had AJ signed McNeil and Jackson. Do you agree?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

Having those guys for 16 games certainly wouldn't have hurt. But I think Smith was referring to all the mistakes on special teams.

D (Portland)

Bill, do you think Oakland will trade up to round 1, and if so who would they target? I for one would go after Jimmy Smith of CO. He's got baggage, BUT I think Oakland's core players, young and old, would keep him in check.

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

Smith or perhaps an O-lineman could be a target. Yes, I could see the Raiders falling for some one and moving up.

Michael K (Tujunga, CA)

Why is no one saying the obvious, that John Elway is going to wait till next year to try and draft his fellow cardinal Andrew Luck who he clearly wants, and that all the talk about maybe drafting a QB this year is purely a smokescreen.

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

We've mentioned that possibility, Michael. I think Tebow should be given the ball in 2011, a season in which not much is expected from Denver. If he fails, Denver could be in position to grab Luck. If he succeeds, it's a moot point.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the NFL Lockout will cancel the 2011 NFL Season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I am very hopeful it will be settled in the next 30 days or so. Not confident, but hopeful.

Josh (Jacksonville)

Now that there is mediation again, any chance of a deal getting done before the draft? If so is orton gone by draft day?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

We only have two weeks before the draft. A lot would have to happen for the deal to be done and then for league business to start in the next two weeks.

Evan (San Diego)

If the top tier 3-4 DEs Watt and Jordan are gone at 18 the Bolts should trade down and take Heyward and stockpile some picks for a move later. You agree?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

They have a lot of picks, so they could get a lot of players in the first three rounds if that's the case. If they traded down I think they may llok at Ryan Kerrigan, Aldon Smith, Muhammad Wilkerson and Akeem Ayers before Heyward,

Josh (Jacksonville)

Bill, heard a couple rumors in the Denver media that the cardinals and skins were talking to the broncos about trading for the 2nd pick. What kind of package is elway looking for in return for that pick?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

It would eb aload to get rid fo No. 2. Perhaps a first, second and third.

Travis (Nevada city CA)

Bill - will a rookie wage scale be in effect before signing this draft class? Also what do you think of the talent from 35-55 in this years draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Again, it may be a lot to ask for the deal to be done before the draft. As far as 33-55, I hear this draft is deep throuhg the first two rounds. Good players can be had in the second round.

Noel (Denver)

Hey Bill, Do you think that Denver might draft RB Mikel Leshoure with the 36th Pick in the draft? John Fox loves his RB's.

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Leshoure is coming to Denver for a visit. I think it's a possibility. Moreno has shown he is not the answer alone and John Fox loves to ram the ball down opponent's throats.

humble gorilla (antioch, ca)

Hey Bill, great work on the blog! I had surgery Monday and you look exactly like my surgeon, so I feel like you owe me this question: If Jimmy Smith is available in the 2nd and Kaepernick available in the 3rd, is it possible the Raiders won't draft an OL until the 4th round? And if so, is that such a bad thing if they can get Smith and Kaepernick? Thanks Bill!

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I would have gone to another hospital ... Yeah, I think that would be a great second day of the draft. The O-line issue would still be there, but there is always free agency.Hope you are recovering well.

Smithson (Tinseltown)

They call one player a speed receiver, another a slot receiver, and a third a possession receiver. Explain the difference. Would you want a balance of all three types or a super strong strength (like all your receivers to be speedsters)?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Here are examples of the threeSpeed: Randy Moss.Possession: Cris CarterSlot: Brandon Stokley

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

With Dallas and Washington, putting a for sale sign on picks 9 & 10, any chance the chargers trade up, if they do who will be their focus, any chance they pick Robert Quinn?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

I think so. Quinn, J.J. Watt, Julio Jones could all be targets of the Chargers if they move up to the 9-12 range.

tyler (Cali)

what do you think of this years draft talent wise, personally i think alot of players are in the first round only by default of last years draft.

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

I don't think it's as strong as last year's draft. That could end up being a great draft. But, I think, this year's class is better than 2009. That was a brutal draft. Just look at what the AFC West has gotten out of that draft so far.

Randy (Wisconsin)

Should the Chiefs go after Carimi if he is sitting there for them when their pick rolls around?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

If depends on what else is available. I think Carimi is on their list, but so are a lot of players.

Dan (Canada)

Once free agency begins, would you say there is still any chance at all of Nnamdi coming back to Oakland? If not, do they go with a corner with their first pick in the 2nd round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I think we'll know if Oakland will bring back Asomugha or not whether they take a CB early. They have been studying CBs hard. if the Raiders grab a corner early it will be another sign Nnamdi could be gone.

jason (riverside ca)

if Volek leaves to compete for a starting job do you think the chargers draft a qb or bring in a free agent like alex smith who had his best year under norv?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

Smith and Norv have a good rleationship. That's a possibility at some point. I could also see San Diego taking a QB late in the draft.

jason (riverside ca)

what do you think the chances of nnamdi reuniting with Norv? possibly moving jammer to safety along side of sanders

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

It's been reported that the Chargers have thought about Asomugha, but it would be out of character for the Chargers to spend big money in free agency.

chris (chicago)

Who has a better chance of being on Denver's roster come week 1: Dawk or Ryan Harris?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Both are shaky. But I'd say Dawkins.

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

The Redskins are a long way down from the #2 slot. If there is a trade on the table hypothetically for a 1, 2, and 3 (I know this isn't the case with the Skins right now, but let's ignore that fact for the moment) do you think the Broncos should take it or are they moving too far down and missing out on the top class of 5-7 players?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

I think Denver could get one of these players -- Miller, Peterson, Fairley or Quinn _ if they go to the No. 5-8 range. i think that is the range they are focusing on. Look at Arizona (No. 5) and The Titans (No. 8) as possibilities.

joey (NC)

any chance the raiders can get some chat time???? broncos n chargers arent the only teams in the division......

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Ask a question, bro.

Disinterested Gorilla (San Diego Zoo)

I have heard that Peterson is going number one now. If that is true, what would that do to the QB situation in terms of draft position??

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

I still think a QB will go to Carolina.

Scott (California)

How often are there picks-for-picks trades before the day of the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

It's more talk than trade in the days before, but it happens. Still, most of the action happens on the clock.

Adam (Irvine, CA)

If the Chargers end up getting either JJ Watt or Cam Jordan in the draft how would you rank their defensive line to other teams in the AFC West considering this past seasons emergence of Antonio Garay?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

It would depend on what every other team does in the draft and free agnecy. But it would be good. I like Garay.

Sergio (Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi Bill, Jimmy Smith and Jonathan Baldwin have been thrown around as possibilities for the chargers, they both seem to have character red flags, they don't seem like AJ style picks agree?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

You are right.

Jack Hoffer (Kansas)

So you have never told us who your favorite NFL team is....I think now is the time you let us know. Who is it?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

My only favorite team is the San Francisco Giants. Life is good ... After years of misery.

Jack Hoffer (Kansas)

If the Broncos trade back will they have a shot at Patrick Peterson or who do you think they will go for?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

He'll be gone by No. 7. If could be a steal to get him or Miller at No. 5 and get soem extra picks.

Jackson (Hillsboro, Oregon)

Taking guesses right now, who are the AFC West teams drafting in the first round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

Den: DareusSD: JordanKC: Wilkerson

Hoot (SD)

Hi Bill,In your opinion what do you think is the best draft day strategy for SD. Stand pat with the top 5 or deal and target specific players? I have my opinion but I dona??t follow college ball.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I think they can a stud at No. 18. I'd stay there and then maybe move up to the end of the first round to grab someone else. If SD can get a pass-rusher and an OT in the first round, it'd be big.

Jeremy (San Diego)

If Jimmy Smith slips out of the 1st round, do you see the Raiders trading with the Patriots for the 1st pick of the 2nd round because he wouldnt get past dallas and houston.? If they do, what would it take?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

That would makse sense for sure.

Scott (Columbus, OH)

If Sproles gone in SD, who is better fit to replace him? RB Kendall Hunter, WR Randall Cobb, WR Torrey Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Those palers owrk. They also like Jernigan from Troy.

Kc (SD )

What is your take on Aldon Smith going to the bolts at 18? It sounds like he is more of a project and the chargers need an impact player on D this year. Thanks. Love the blog!

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

Thanks, Kc .. Smith is on the list and he could be the choice if guys like Watt and Jordan are gone. He hasn't played much, but he's been dynamic when he's played.

Disgruntled Gorilla (Locked out of the zoo)

Pick # 18 is on the clock...... Watt, Jordan, Aldon Smith, and Tyron Smith are all available..... who is the pick?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

That's a tough one. I'd say Watt.

Bob (Leadville colorado)

Which player do you think has the most upside in context of helping the Broncos with their defense at #2?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Probably Dareus. A dominant DT can change a defense.

John (Neb.)

If Carolina ends up taking M. Dareus at #1, who do you think the Broncos would then go for? Would Von Miller fit with Denver going back to the 4-3?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Miller or Peterson and hope to trade down.

Clark (OP, KS)

Do you see a possibility of a top receiver in the draft (Julio or Green) dropping down into the 20s where KC can draft one of them, like Dez Bryant did the year before for the Cowboys?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Dez dropped because of character issues. That's not a problem with these guys. I'd be shocked if either one of these two players dropped past No. 14, which is owned by reicever-needy St. Louis

John (Neb.)

Do you mean trading down to get Miller or Peterson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Yes, or Fairley or Quinn.

Lucy (Three rivers California)

Is there a chance the Broncos would take that qb out of Nevada in the 2nd round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

They looked at him. Oakland and KC is also studying Kaepernick.

Jeremy (San Diego)

If somehow both Jimmy Smith and Ryan Mallett fall to the Raiders at #48, who do you think they pick?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Tough one, tough one. Dang, maybe Smith because he can help right away.

John (Neb.)

How about Denver going after Rudolph at TE with one of their 2nd round picks?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

There's been a lot of talk of that and I know Denver wnants a tight end. But I'd go defense with my top three picks. I'd make sense if Denver compiles more scond-round picks. If they have four or five picks in the first two rounds, I could see this working.

upstate (upstate)

do you think the Chiefs are useing Phil Taylor as a smoke screen for lets say the Jets in order to trade down and go w/ Ayers or maybe Houston and a extra 4th or 5th rounder?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Sure, or I could see the Chiefs moving down to No. 29-30 and taking Taylor. They like him.

Terrell (South Carolina)

If there is a possibility of the Chiefs trading up, who do you think they would trade up with and do you have an idea of what they would have to give up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

If I had to guess, I'd say the Chiefs will stay or move down to the No. 25-30 range.

Quinster (San Diego)

Is Eric Weddle going to be wearing lightning bolts still??

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

I think he'll be there in 2011.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Great hour, everyone. Talk to you next week.
