Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning, gang. Hope everyone survived the Night of Neglect in one piece... second cup of coffee in hand. Who, pray tell, is up first?

Michael (Crooked River Ranch, OR)

Are you starting Zimmerman vs. the Cards today? They have crushed him in the past.

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

I think he's pitched well so far this season, and I'd start him... it's not like this "in the past" is years and years of multiple bad starts.

David (San Diego)

What is your take on Carl Crawford? Any worried yet?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Obviously, he's been one of the worst fantasy players so far this season -- but I'm not ready to write him off just yet.

Gil (Boston)

In a H2H league do you start guys with double headers over guys who might be better? I have Pena and Byrd today and would have to sit Lind and Ichiro to play them.

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Certainly more chances to do well can tip the scale, but an 0-for-8 day isn't better than a 1-for-3. Start your best, use double headers as a tie-breaker.

Hoff (Indy)

Are questions submitted before the chat start time entered in your queue or are they lost to cyberspace? Trust Harang tonight vs the cubbies? He hasn't let me down yet...

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

They are there, but to be honest, so many roll in during the chat that I rarely have time to scroll back to them... best to wait until 11. Harang has been top 20 so far, so even with the road contest, I'm not pulling him.

Bob (Livonia)

Value of Jerry Sands in an NL Only keeper league? Burn the waiver for him or wait for someone more attractive?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

He was considered to be a year away before the call-up, so I'm not breaking the bank here FAAB wise. I don't think you go nuts over a guy who may not help you win THIS year... however, I never let waiver wire placement affect my decision... someone more attractive may not come along, and even if they do, by then you may be back at the top.

Mark (DC)

Thoughts on J. Pierre - caught last 5 sb attempt. Would you drop or trade for M. Bourn?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

I haven't seen "how" he got caught and whether he's lost a step or he's choosing bad times to run, etc. but as long as he continues to get on base and get green lights, I still prefer him overall to Bourn for now.

Josh (Columbus, OH)

AJ - first time baseball player. How long is the "don't worry, they're studs" time period? I know the season's long, but how long before concerns grown on HanRam, Youk, Rios, etc?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Barring injuries, I think you should generally wait one month to see where your team is and then make those calls.

Frank (MD)

Best utility spot player for a h2H 10 team standard mixed league: Huff, Lowrie, Gomes, Bourne?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

I've been high on Lowrie all season and named him as a sleeper in the Draft Kit. No reason to change that tune now that he's getting more ABs.

Ace (DC)

What's up with the cartoon scenes in Fringe? Thought I was tripping. Who wins - Halladay and Morales or Greinke and Texeira? Who's injury will linger the longest - Morales or Greinke?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

I am far more concerned with Kendrys, which I think answers both questions. And the cartoon scenes make more sense than the sudden added "S" to Kendry.

Bill (Athens)

2010 Jeter or 2011 Jeter?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

Well, 2010 Jeter has no chance of improving, so...

David (Buffalo)

Ogando and Britton were both knocked around after looking stellar in their first few starts. Which one do you believe has better staying power?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

Both should be in it for the long haul... neither was going 30-0. I think Ogando has a ton of his manager's confidence, so he's got more "staying power" but neither is going anywhere.

Jeff (Cape Cod)

Would you drop Thornton and pick up Mitchell Boggs?... or stay patient...

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

When the season started, I thought Thornton had 3-4 months tops as closer... I'm not even that comfortable now, so rolling dice with Boggs isn't the worst idea.

Paul (Maywood, NJ)

Castro or Rollins for the rest of this season? Want to trade one.

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

I think you'll get more value in return for Rollins. Personally, I don't want to be near him -- but that's my own bias speaking.

Mark (Cary, NC)

RE: Ogando...Can you clarify your comment on him? You think he stays in the rotation all year? Because w/ his innings limit and the excess of SP in Texas, I think its inevitable he winds up back in the pen. He threw 70 some innings last year!

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

True, but it's not innings - it's pitches. He's under 90 a start so far and pitched into 7th in all three. If he gets shut down, he's not going to pen, he's done... and I don't think his past workload precludes him pitching into September.

Mark Reynolds (K-town)

Any chance I'll improve this season or is this what I am? My BABIP is still kind of low...

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

BABIP, SCHMABIP. Hit ten home runs in your next ten ABs and your BABIP doesn't change. For all or nothing guys like you, which IS what you are, that's a completely useless stat.

BJ (Indiana)

Does Chipper Jones still have a good year left in him, or are these early stats the last hurrah of a noble dinosaur?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Ride Larry until the first limp. Then send him packing pronto.

mike (nyc)

david wright -- besides the slump the mets offense looks terrible. is he a guy you would shop or can he still put up top 20 numbers with no help?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I don't think the offense looks nearly as bad as the pitching -- but he'll be top 30 even with no help once this current slide goes by the wayside.

Scott (Boston, MA)

aside from the standard "If there's no rule against it" response, in a H2H league, is it ethical to leave your only C or 3B spot on the DL/Empty and overload SP while the person is on the DL. It seems sketchy to me, but i'm not sure if it should be dealt with or not.

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

True, "If there's no rule against it" is the reason there should be a rule against it -- and you can't make one now... But I think it's dirty pool to leave a lineup spot empty in the way you describe, yes.

Jason (Phoenix)

Will Morse turn it around?

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

Let's get him into the lineup first... the flu is killing him. He's only disappointed those who bought into the spring nonsense.

Dan (Ourkansas)

Thoughts on Lohse and Carmona the rest of the way?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Buying Kyle. Selling Fausto.

Mark Reynolds (Baltimore)

What do you mean my BABIP doesn't include HR's? I didn't know that, does my agent?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Last time I checked, home runs were not "balls in play".

John (SC)

Daily Notes has Narveson at 16 today...is that a start or sit?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

That's your call. DN are simply ranking the pitchers for the day -- if you own pitchers 24, 25, 26 and 27, then Narveson is your best bet. And - news flash - it's just a snapshot of the odds. We make no claims of psychic powers.

Louis ((Miss))

You selling high on Alex Gordon or should I just enjoy the ride while it last (or is it finally his year)?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

The longer it lasts, the more I buy in. He's burned me in the past, but I'm slowly starting to believe.

Matt (York, PA)

So, you've made 1 bold prediction in this chat (Ogando staying in the rotation)....care to make it 2? Does Jordan Walden keep the closer job in LAA or does Rodney reclaim it?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

At some point this season, and probably before June, Rodney gets multiple save chances in a row. I doubt a declarative statement of "He's got the job back" will ever be made.

Jake (San Diego)

Can't fantasy owners make their own decisions based on the information available? Has anyone ever sent you a percentage of their winnings based on your advise or do they just send you complaints?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

LOL. What I find the most amusing is the DN lists 30 guys... I can get 29 of 30, and the one I get wrong will be called "the worst call in the history of the world" and "how can I keep this job" will be asked. It goes with the territory.

Jonathan (NYC)

Can a round in a draft be cursed? 6th round picks the last three years: Hardy, McLouth, Gardner. Is there any hope?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

6-6-6 dude. Head to the nearest exorcist.

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

6-6-6 dude. Head to the nearest exorcist.

Mike (Niskayuna, NY)

Colby Lewis a top 30 or 40 pitcher for you?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Nope. Least favorite of the Rangers staff.

Nick (VA)

What are your thoughts on Daniel Hudson? Has the potential for K's but is 0-3...

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

Record isn't totally his fault. He's a spot starter to be sure, but certainly ownable in 12-team mixed.

Mark (Chicago)

How about the rest of the Rangers staff? How do you rank Ogando, Harrison, and Holland?

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

Wilson, Harrison, Holland, Ogando.

Hanley (Miami)

Love your chats, AJ. Hey am I worth trading for Felix and Elvis?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

That's a deal I'd consider. Even as bad as Felix has looked, he's still giving you value - and he HAS to get better, doesn't he?

Matt (CT)

You start Morrow against the Rays Friday in his first outing off the DL?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

I rarely start a pitcher fresh off the DL. Even if they pitch well, managers tend to pull them earlier to play it safe and as such, chances of winning are even less than usual.

John (PA)

In reply to Rodney getting save chances again...why? Is there reason to suggest Walden will regress midseason, or that Rodney will learn how close for that matter?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Scioscia will go with whoever works... but Rodney, with a few decent setup outings will earn at least one or two save chances... If he nails those, the track record earns him more... Walden doesn't need to regress for a swap.

Nick (NY)

For all those who don't get their questions answered here: When AJ says you can ask on Twitter, he'd not kidding. Answered every one of my questions so far there. My question: Thoughts on Jason's: Kubel or Bay going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

Thanks, Nick. I do try to get to them all, although I do not promise 100 percent. Sometimes things happen... I like Kubel more going forward, but at least it looks like Bay will be back in next 48 hours.

Nick (VA)

Are you worried about Joakim Soria? Hasn't looked like himself past few outings...

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

He's fine... a few too many walks to be sure, but four saves in last four chances is not a reason to worry.

Matt (NC)

Which waiver wire 1B do you prefer from Freeman, Moreland, Smoak or Trumbo?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Moreland for me. FYI, Smoak out around a week due to his father being sick... he's on leave.

Kevin Correia (Pittsburgh)

Is there a chance I'm for real as a mixed league option? Even I have trouble buying into me.

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Well, it's the lack of K's that make people sweat - that and the fact nobody really think the Pirates will keep winning consistently. Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Scott Gross (Ann Arbor)

John Buck or Alex Avila

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Avila... for all those looking to replace V-Mart.

Carl Pavano (Twin Cities, MN)

Rough start last night but am solid right? 4 Era 14 Wins? Nothing Special

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Always a good play at home... but nothing special on the road.

Al (Jackson Heights, NY)

Encarnacion...do you think he'll reach 30 HRs this year? Nothing so far...

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

No, no I don't.

Bruce Chen (KC)

Have you seen my ERA after yesterday? It went up to a 2.42 with a 1.15 WHIP. Am I ownable yet?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Yes. Yes you are.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

Folks... it's 12, and time to call it a chat. We'll be back here on Friday, and there's that Twitter thing until then... Thanks for the Q's, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
