Sean Rogers is here to chat with fans ahead of Notre Dame's big game against Syracuse this Saturday. It's a 7 p.m. start and it will be on ESPNU. The Irish are undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country, while Syracuse is No. 4 with only one loss. Should be a huge game and lots to talk about with Sean.
Syracuse has so many players that can hurt you. How do you prepare for a game with so many gunners on one field.
Syracuse is a very talented team. They have 7 senior All-American's who are all dangerous and several underclassmen who can hurt you too. We have to concentrate on playing sound fundamental defense and not having unforced turnovers. If you give them too many opportunities they will make you pay.
Over the last three years you've been able to play with some great players and All American's. Who would you say had the biggest influence on you and who were the best?
Duncan Swezey and Ryan Hoff were two talented attackmen my freshman year. They really taught me a lot about how to play in our system and how to be successful on the field. As far as who's the best, Scotty Rodgers and Ryan Hoff were capable to taking over any game.
What was the coolest shot you have ever made?
Two that stick out to me are both against Duke. This year I scored the first goal of the game with a one handed wrap around and last year in the final I had a nice near side high shot to give us the lead. Those two are the ones that stick out the most to me.
A lot of people say that the defensive midfielders of ND are the best looking players on the team, and perhaps in the entire country. Do you believe this to be true from your own experience? Thank you.
We do have a great looking group of D-Mids. Devon "Divo" Dobson and Tim "Biz" Bemer are the headliners in the looks department. Overall our D-mids are great lacrosse players.
Most bizarre/interesting/entertaining teammate?
Max Pfeifer, hands down. Max has a unique personality and he has grown in my eyes from bizarre to interesting to absolutely hilarious. He's got great dance moves as well, including the elevator.
Do you get tired of hearing ND can't compete with the Eastern Powers ?
Personally it doesn't bother me much at all. We here at ND know what we are capable of and the 50+ people who are at practice everyday know that we can compete with anybody when we play our best.
What is the best way to attack the Syracuse defense?
Syracuse's defense is big and talented and capable of taking a game over. We have to be smart with our decisions and pick our spots to attack them.
My son plays for the local 7th/8th grade team here in Zionsville. Over the next few years, what skills should he focus on to become a better midfield player.
First I'd say play multiple sports. Nearly every sport's movements translate well to lacrosse. Secondly I'd say work on your shooting with both hands. Third I'd say watch as much lacrosse as possible, the more you watch the more you'll learn.
How does David Earl constantly find Igoe on the back post? Would you say they have a indescribable bond that can only be compared to Mavrick and Goose in Top Gun.
Maverick and Goose would be a great way to describe those two especially because they are fond of wearing aviators, even when it rains out.
What advice can you give on balancing academics and lacrosse?
Here at ND its as tough as any place to do. I think the best advice I could give is to not be afraid to use your resources. Academic advisors, tutors and teacher's all want to see you succeed so don't be afraid to ask for help.
Sean, do you and your teammates feel that you've broken into the top tier of d1 teams after last season's final 4 run?
Yes I feel like we are up there with the top tier of D1 teams. We may not have the rich history of national championships like other programs but as far the present goes we are up there with the best of them.
Hey Sean, being from LI you have probably played with and against some great players. Who is one who really stood out over your career?
Great question. I have been fortunate enough to play with some amazing lacrosse players over my career. The first year I made the LI Empire team we were stacked. I believe 14 guys from that team were drafted this past winter, which is unbelievable for a high school summer team. That team had Breneman, Brattons, Howell, Turri, Flanagan to name a few. The best player I every played against was Max Pomper. He was a senior at St. Anthony's when I was an freshman at Holy Trinity and I remember him dominating us.
GO IRISH!!! is this the game of the year?
I heard Quint say this is for the #1 seed in the tournament. This game is obviously big but what makes us successful is that we approach every game the same and we don't see one bigger than the next.
Sean, practicing every day against such a talented defense must really improve your game. You have the challenge of facing some of the best individual defenders in college lacrosse. Who do you have more trouble dodging against...Andrew Irving and his relentless aggressiveness and ability to throw takeaway checks or Kevin Ridgway and his more physical style of play with a larger than normal pole?
Me and Irv don't match up to often but Ridgway and Barnes are definitely the toughest. Rigdway is 6'7 and has long strides and Barnes is 6'2 and as athletic as they come. It's hard to beat those two with any sort of consistency.
What is your favorite away facility to play at and why?
I love playing in the big football stadiums but if I had to choose a lacrosse only venue it would be Duke because of the grass.
What is the coaching staff doing different to prepare the team for this top opponent and the confines of the Carrier Dome?
The coaching staff hasn't done anything different from the previous games. As far as preparing for the dome, we have an indoor facility of our own so we're used to the lighting and humidity of an indoor arena.
Who reps more Ohio pride a?? Nick Beattie or Colin Igoe?
Beattie by far. Nick wears this ugly Ohio State sweater all the time and is always yelling O-H..I-O.
Sean, what are your off season work outs like? I've heard rumors of an annual lacrosse training retreat which you and your teammates embark on each summer into the mountains of Lake Harmondora. Is there any truth behind this rumor, and if so please provide comments.
Yes every summer ND laxers from the past and present embark on a weekend long retreat to Lake Hormandora in PA. That retreat is all about tanning, curls and karaoke at Shenanigans. You know you've made it when you get an invite to exit 277
how do you plan to attack the best goalie in the country in John Galloway? Do you think he can handle your high heat?
I feel like I play against the best goalie every day in John Kemp. What makes Galloway so great is what he does outside the cage. Obviously he's a great ball stopper but he's even better at picking off passes and throwing 60 yard outlet passes on the money.
Are there any guys on the team who have superstitions that continue throughout the season?
John Scioscia and Pat "Bushman" Cotter both have agreed not to cut their hair until seasons end. Both of them are in desperate need of a cut, trim or shave. If you're reading this, do something guys. I know Steve Murphy always needs a large Redbull before every game as well.
Please rank these three shows out of ten. Pawn Stars, Dirty Jobs, and Storage Wars.
Wow 3 of my top 5 personal favorites. Pawn Stars is a 9, who doesn't like Chumlee?! Dirty Jobs is an 7.5. Storage Wars is 8 but Swamp People and Deadliest Catch would both get 10's in my book.
Although you lead ND in points, what's the deal with your tilt? How can you work to increase your freshness as the tournament nears?
Great question, I'm starting a new trend called reverse tilt! In all seriousness my head is big and I can have tilt and be uncomfortable or go reverse tilt and enjoy my time in a helmet. I'll see what I can do come tourny time.
What makes the ND defense so special
First, our coaches have put in a great scheme. Secondly, we have extremely talented guys on D starting with Kemp and ending with our Mids and D-Mids. Third is the fact that our guys trust each other and communicate so well together. If you're lucky enough to beat one of them everyone else is prepared to step up and make a play.
Who was the hardest defenseman you've gone up against?
The Schmidt's from UMD were both very talented as was Chris Nixon. Take your pick and it's hard to beat any of them.
From what you know of the dobson brothers, would you rather play with your teammate devon, or his younger brother Philip, or sing with Tom?
Well I like them all. I would like to play with Phil, the youngest because he is an offensive threat down at Loyola.
Has there been any change to your warmup this year that you can credit to your fabulous season???
This year we went with a different warmup from our new strength coach Hunter. The drills we do are very effective but sometimes the guys leading them miss a step or two.
When you are cradeling, getting ready to shoot, do you cradle with your top or bottom hand
I cradle with my top hand because you have a better feel for the ball.
when finishing, do you prefer to top shelf it, or lay it in the mud?
I prefer whatever goes in. It really depends on where and when I'm shooting from. If the goalie is weak low I'm going to put it low and vice versa but if I had to choose it would be top shelf, on B-Moore our backup goalie.
How important is nutrition to your game? Do you have a favorite pre-game meal? And is it true that you do wall sits while eating kettle corn?
Nutrition is definitely important for any athlete. I eat very healthy 5 days a week but I do like to sprinkle in at least one Chipotle burrito and I always have a big brunch on Friday's before games. Unfortunately I do not eat kettle corn post workout/wall sits, I prefer a protein smoothie.
After watching your recruiting video I noticed you were recruited by many schools like duke, harvard, princeton, yale, columbia, and UMass... what made you choose notre dame besides mendoza school of business?
Wow great find on the video. Well if I knew the senior class would be this funny I would've chosen ND a lot sooner! I chose ND because of the academics and athletics. I believe its the best at both and I couldn't be happier.
Do you have any interaction with the football team? Any good stories?
I have plenty of interaction with the football team and many other teams. My roommate is Mike Golic Jr. and he's one of my best friends here at ND. He accompanies me to my Friday brunch but he always eats a lot more than me. I have plenty of stories about him and many other athletes but I'll save that for another time. Good luck to all those guys getting drafted this weekend as well.
That's it with Sean Rogers for today. Make sure to check out the game at 7 p.m. on ESPNU and follow along at insidelacrosse.com for more coverage.
