Hello Sports Nation!! Thanks for joining me on Friday - I will have to be brief today since I'm joining our NFL draft folks a little later -but let's get to what we can!
Hello to my favorite Bay Area chatter. Steph, what's the latest with Delmon Young? Has he been playing hurt up to his DL? He sure has struggled to start the season. Also, what's your take on the Niners 1st pick yesterday? Thanks.
Mark: OK - West coast bias in play - but also a good question. Young has a strained oblique it seems -and had been complaining of pain in his side for a while. Seems like the response by the team was a little slow..but it also appears that his injury may not be exceptionally serious. So yes - was playing hurt up to DL (and had flu), they hope he can come back when eligible.I think the 49ers gave good rationale for their pick. I will be interested in the ensemble of their picks - and I expect at least some interest, if not action, once Kolb available through trade.
Stephania - My team is in misery. Please give me something positive on one of my injured/rehabbing players: Longo, Hughes, Pagan, VMart...
All-DL: Well. here's some good news! Longoria will come off the DL and join his team Tuesday if the rest of his rehab outings go as planned. Already hit a home run in his first minor league appearance so get him in your lineup.
weekly mauer update-- is this the time to buy him or risky
Curious: I say risky. Things are just too muddy for me when it comes to the team's explanation for his condition. Without being able to see him (evaluate him) for myself, I'm left scratching my head at what has happened with him. When I don't get good answers, that spells risk to me.
Rajai Davis...how much does the ankle injury concern you moving forward?
Jon: Certainly we've seen guys come back from ankle sprains and be more susceptible to aggravating it. But so far he's played in rehab games with no issues - including a 10 inning outing - so it wouldn't keep me from starting him.
Stephania, what is D'Quan Bowers injury that is causing so much alarm with scouts?
Ben: Tune in to ESPN just after 5:45 pm and I'll be talking about it...
Hi Stephania,Domonic Brown has hit 2 HRs in rehab so far. Is it unprecedented for a player to hit for power like he has after removal of the hamate bone?
Norman: Don't know about unprecedented - but it certainly goes a long way towards helping alleviate some concerns about his power post-surgery. I talked with Ben Francisco about this during spring training as he had the same injury - and he said it was really sore and bothered him the first few weeks swinging the bat, then got fully better. If Brown is already demonstrating some power, so much the better. And maybe this is also just what he needs to get confidence after struggling to hit during spring training.
How long will Texiera be out?
Nathan: Taking BP today to see if he can play tonight. Don't know the official word yet - but sounds like he is not overly concerned about it.
Morales...Is he making progress? I keep getting mixed signals from everything that I am reading. Timetable? Thx keep up the good work.
Mike: I think his progress, basically, has been slow. Slower than what everyone expected. Makes me wonder what he was up to during the offseason. Not uncommon to have some stiffness following this procedure, be a little slow to get the agility back, but he basically couldn't run at all even this spring - and still can't do more than jog. No word yet on what the outcome of the specialist visit was (that I've seen) but at this point there is no timetable b/c he's just plateaued.
Whats the word on Ryan Zimmerman?
Steve: His activity is still very limited - playing some catch, light running - nothing more than 50% speed. Not surprising he didn't return when eligible Tuesday as the team had always projected about 3 weeks, but the question is whether 3 weeks will be enough. He needs to do a little more before going on rehab assignment (show he can run, throw hard) - they certainly don't want him to make this worse, after all, that's how he got on the DL in the first place. So expect at least a week, but I'm guessing more like two...
I'm taking a look at Johan Santana and Stephen Strasburg in... do you think either will have a fantasy impact this year in a H2H league? (Trying to plan ahead for playoffs)
Mikey B: Nope. Think Strasburg doesn't play (outside chance if team is playoff bound) and Santana is iffy with lots of hurdles/progressions before competitive throwing. Maybe late in the season but I wouldn't be counting on it.
Any update on Phil Hughes?
Dan: Seeing a specialist Monday - sounds like could be a case of thoracic outlet syndrome. If that's true, I'll be writing about it in more detail next week.
Joe: Doing well so far - sounds like they hope to activate him when eligible May 4.
Is Joe Nathan's losing the closer role due more to a lack of innings post-surgery or a total loss of ability? Odds that he regains the role this year?
Patrick: Not at all a total loss of ability. More normal for guys to have ups and downs after this procedure than not. He'll get his groove back - and I think he could get it back by All-Star break if not before.
Is Andres Torres coming back soon?
Chris: Hopefully soon - Bochy said he had "a couple more boxes to check off" - maybe another week to ten days.
OK gang - sorry to cut it short! But it's draft week...I'll be back on Wednesday afternoon for the full hour. Until then - stay healthy!
