Busy day so far. Trevor Bayne back in the hospital, Eric McClure's house hit by tornado and Kyle Busch is a good guy. Fire away.
What 2 Sprint Cup Series Races will the Go Canada Team be racing at this season?
Pocono and Watkins Glen I believe.
Will the burnout contest be apart of this year's all-star festivites as in years past? I hope so. I love that event!
Pretty sure it will. You're right. One of the more fun things to watch. Who's your favorite?
heading to richmond and darlington, two tracks where denny hamlin won at last year, Does he get on back on track or does he continue to struggle?
If he doesn't then his team has real problems. Honestly, I can't figure them out yet. Keep a close eye this weekend because Richmond is a place he's dominated the past four years.
If you were a driver what would be your sponsor and what would be your number?
Twelve and Nike. Love a big swoosh on the hood.
Should Nascar let the Nationwide Series just be for the Nationwide regulars race and not for any driver thats in the cup series? The cup guys are winning all these race and I think this is hurting the sport. Your thoughts?
I really don't mind the Cup guys there. What I like about Nationwide is it's all about winning. I don't even think about the championship there. But you're right, the system as it is now brings even more attention to the fact Cup guys are dominating than ever.
What Race do you think that Danica Patrick will make her Sprint Cup Series Debut at?
Phoenix in the fall. But it hasn't been set yet.
How surprised are you that Gilliland, who had no top 10s last year already has two of them this year?
Honestly, nothing surprises me these days. And Dega really is a place where almost anybody can finish top 10 with the right luck.
Do you think that Danica Patrick will sign with Team Red Bull in 2012?
I don't. I believe it will be Stewart-Haas.
What are your favorite moments or memories from richmond from the last 10 years? (2001-2010)
Off the top of my head, Kyle Busch wrecking Dale Jr. Pretty dramatic after Jr. had taken his ride.
Do you think a rookie of the year winner will ever win another Cup race? Anyone who doesn't see the pool of drivers being emptied is nuts! It's not just the economy!
You're right. And I'm sure a rookie will win when we get a legitimate rookie class again. It's been a few years.
Nashville was a snoozer however I do feel like seeing what could have been first time winners, Ricky Stenhouse and Nelson Piquet (both the highest finishing non Cup guys) would have mad up for a boring weekend of races! If Nationwide fails without Cup drivers I say let it go!
I still believe people would watch if Cup drivers didn't compete. It hasn't always been this way.
Will my awe shucks charm and increasing success help me finally breakthrough in popularity or will I continue to be mired in the second tier?
Second tier, man. Sorry.
What Speedways will Host a Sprint Cup Series Race for the First Time Ever in the Future Besides Kentucky Speedway?
I hope Iowa, but probably a few years off.
Hey Newt, what kind of cars are they racing in Rowdy's charity event tonight at Richmond? Are they COT's and do they use the new generation Goodyear tire?
Who do you think will win the Bubba Burger 250 & the Matthew
Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch
There have been rumors of a crew chief change at JGR with the 11 and the 20. This seems like a no brainer, why has it not happened yet?
Because it's not going to happen. Ford is one of the top crew chiefs in the garage and almost got Hamlin a championship last year. A slow start doesn't warrant a change. Same for Zippy. He's invested too much in Joey to swap now.
Hey Newt, I'm heading to Richmond for Saturday night's Cup race. What do you recommend as far as great places to eat in the area? Also, my gf is a Denny Hamlin fan and i'm pulling for Dale Jr - who goes home happier on Saturday night?
A lot of folks like the Tobacco company downtown. I like a small place just down the street that escapes my mind. Plenty of good bbq joints around too if you like that. And there's a place on Broad street that also escapes my mind that specializes in good down home Southern cooking.
Dave, when are you going to learn not to stay out in the sun so long that you get burnt! Thank goodness you had Ernie under that umbrella.
Thanks. I am peeling like my fourth layer of skin I believe. Can't tell you how badly I itch.
Speaking of Ernie, do you seriously think attaching his leash to the umbrella would hold him securely. What if he had decided to chase something dragging the umbrella behind him!! Dogs are fun.
You're right and he did.
After reading your article I am 95% sure that you are Octo. I am sick of seeing Kyle's personality articles on an almost daily basis. You know he only has 1 win this year right?
Hey, Kyle on a horse and a white hat was worth a fun column.
Another week, another bombardment of "Kyle is a good guy" articles by the media. Its that 3rd annual part in the season when all the "Kyle has matured" articles start getting published every week. A recent study found that Kyle has been the most mentioned driver BY FAR this season, lots more than 5 time and twice as much as Junior. Why is the media ramming this guy down everyones throats? Shouldn't the fans decide if they like him or not? Why is the media all over this guy like he is the prom queen needing a date? The media needs to wipe the drool off of its mouths and write about the other 42 drivers every once in a while. So what if he wins a bunch of minor league races against underfunded race teams in Nationwide? Its really not that impressive...
Not ramming down your throats. Just wanted to share a fun event with you. Had no idea he would be mentioned in an article earlier in the week.
Will it be full panic mode for the 11 team if Denny has another poor showing this Saturday? Do you think the curse of finishing 2nd in points the prior year is real?
I do and there may be something to that curse.
Any truth to the rumor of Logano and Hamlin possibly switching crew chiefs due to both of the teams poor starts? Been hearing that Mike Ford and Denny Hamlins relationship has been a little rocky since they lost the title last season.
Nope. And relationships always seem rocky when a team that expects to win isn't. This too shall pass.
So Mark Martin is getting yet another new car at Richmond this week. At what point do you guys start to pay attention to this story? He has yet to drive one of Juniors cars from last season. All new cars for the 5 team this year. That isn't normal for any team. All the press releases and articles have said that the drivers would be racing each others cars (which Gordon and Junior have done repeatedly) but yet all of the 88 chassis from last season are either sitting in the corner collecting dust or have been scrapped. Was there something wrong with those cars? Why hasn't Martin raced a car Junior drove last year yet? It certainly is starting to give credibility to those in Junior Nation that were saying the cars were junk, especially if they arent good enough for Martin to drive....
Martin's not the only HMS driver that has had new cars. Love your conspiracy theory, but don't think there is anything to it other than perhaps Martin's driving style is signficantly different than Juniors. They've said all along that Junior and Johnson are much closer in style, so that may have something to do with his turnaround.
Hi David, Great story on the man in the white hat, Mr. Nice Guy Rowdy Busch!Do you think to keep making those 88 fans into Rowdy fans he might put Dale Jr in the KBM Tundra for a few races like he did with Kasey Kahne or even give Mark Martin a full time ride at KBM for 2012?
Hey, there's a good idea. Junior driving for Kyle. Unfortunately unless Kyle switches to Chevy it won't happen. And thanks for somebody appreciating the article for what it is.
It's a fair assumption that when a driver gets a pile of wins in a short time, that the garage is more responsible than the driver. Just in the last few years, you've seen Edwards, Martin, Hamlin, and Kahne have 6 & 7 win seasons--and then struggle to win even a single race for years afterward. So why don't crews get poached as much as drivers do?
My thoughts are the cars change ever so slightly and that changes the way a team or driver performs. As in this year, maybe the handling with the new nose has thrown Hamlin off a bit. Plus, it's not easy to sustain in this series unless you're Jimmie Johnson.
Hey Newton, any word on Bayne's replacement this weekend?
I've asked but no response. Let me check while we chat and get back to you.
Hi David, At Texas, Rowdy's in-car camera showed that #88 got away with leaving equipment on pit road and should have been penalized like the #29 and Dale clearly improved his position at Dega by passing below the double yellow and should have been penalized again. Do you think NASCAR might be "turning a blind eye" to 88 rules infractions to help Dale stay in the top 10?
I do not.
Has there ever been more of a division into have-a-chances and have-no-chances? Realistically, no more than 15 drivers are going to win 30 to 35 races a year. This might have been normal in the Petty/Pearson years, but it certainly wasn't in the more recent past. Is this a factor, beyond the economy, in why the interest in the sport has leveled off in the last few years?
I'm not following entirely here. The parity is better than it's ever been. I'd say 15 to 20 teams have a chance to win each week. I couldn't say that 20 years ago. And that has to help interest. Back in the day it wasn't unusual to see one or two drivers finish on the lead lap. Today we usually see at least half the field. To me that's good for the sport.
Was reading about Gordon's career the other day, and saw that he actually scored the most points in two Chase seasons--but obviously doesn't get titles for doing so. Just curious as to whether Earnhardt or Petty or any other multiple champions had championship format changes during their careers.
Petty won under five different formats, I believe. Not sure on how may different Earnhardt won under. I do know Gordon wants to win under this format. He will tell you it is more difficult than ever, which is why Johnson's run is so impressive.
The Chase was supposed to foster greater competition after the Kenseth snooze season a few years ago--but the same guy has now won 5 times in a row. Any chance, if he wins again, that NASCAR will do away with the whole concept?
I doubt it. The Chase works. Why not appreciate the greatness that Johnson has shown like we did when Petty dominated or Pearson or Earnhardt?
KB will never be the hero. He is a hot head and a jerk. Seriously, besides having a tremendous amount of talent, what is there to like? He wins, but a hero? NEVER, more like complete loser who only has a hot wife because he is a race car driver. That geek has gotten more swirley's in his life than wins still!!!
You're cracking me up. Obviously, you're not a Kyle Busch fan. And much of the article was tongue-in-cheek, by the way.
Any more Bayne news? Whos driving for him?
Still waiting on a reply. No more new news. I am told they aren't worried about this being life threatening. But with the symptoms persisting they felt something had to be done. I'm pretty sure what it is, but until I find out for sure don't want to spread rumors.
Tell if I am wrong. I think Kyle winning in the Natiowide and Truck series is still pretty impressive. He is beating Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick. The series doesn't make the driver, the driver makes the series. I think he should get a little more credit for winning in the "lower" series against CUP drivers.
Agreed. Well said.
Hi David, as a big fan of Kurt Busch, it is getting old seeing Kurt giving 110% every race in inferior race cars and not getting any teammate support. What is the solution? fire Addington? new driver in the Blue Deuce or a new team? And if Kurt leaves Penske do you see him taking over Gordon's #24 or maybe a 4th Gibbs car?
Gordon's not going anywhere for a few years. Gibbs would love a fourth car, but believe Carl Edwards is the target at the moment. As for KB's teammate, I'm not sure why Keselowski continues to struggle. It's why I put him on the hotseat last week in my column. Kurt's pretty loyal to Penske so I see him hanging around there, particularly since he signed a new deal last year.
Thoughts and prayers to the tornado victims. David, I saw Nicole Briscoe's NASCAR Now interview with #18 crew chief Dave Rogers and it seems like Dave never gets the credit for Kyle's success like the fans all give to Knaus for #48 or Letarte for #88. Is that because Dave is a low-key, engineer type?
Ditto on tornado victims. As for the interview, Kyle has given Dave plenty of credit. The differene is Kyle has been built up as the best driver this side of Earnhardt that we look at him first and crew chief second when he succeeds.
Did it rain a lot at the track today? Any word on the racing today?
Know there are storms in the area but haven't heard about the impact at the track.
With this rumor about swapping crew chiefs on the #20 and the #11 at Gibbs, wouldn't it be better to give Joey, Jason Ratcliff from the #18 Nationwide team because what has Zippy really done in the last 5 years to convince anyone that he would be an improvement over Mike Ford with Denny?"
Zippy is the last crew chief other than Chad Knaus to win a title. Pretty harsh to suggest he hasn't done anything when he was given an 19-year-old kid a year earlier than anyone expected him to be fulltime in Cup. And the swap deal was a rumor, nothing more.
whos your top 5 this weekend?
Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, Joey Logano, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin.
do you think the crew chief change will be hard on either driver to mesh and may hurt there chances to win?
Which change are you referring? If it's the 11 and 20 not happening.
Do you think Kyle Busch will cut back on his Nationwide/Truck schedule next season, the way that Driver 60/99 has said he would?
He's not racing Nationwide this weekend at Richmond, so that feels odd. But I do believe he'll cut back gradually.
Dale Jr. winning the title would be the biggest thing in NASCAR since _______________?
Richard Petty getting his 200th win with the President at Daytona.
Do you think Junebug is gonna pay kyle back for 08 if he gets the chance?
Nah. He did that the next Richmond race if you recall.
Do you think JGR would ever consider sending Logano back down to race full-time in the NW series, while running a partial Cup series schedule?
Nope. Too much invested now. I could see, say, if Carl Edwards were to move to JGR, him getting Home Depot and Joey another sponsor. Pure speculation, though.
Hell-o David, Matt Kenseth has been qualifying much better and has a savvy crew chief in Jimmy Fenning. One win probably won't get a wildcard. Do you see the 17 making a legitimate run at the title? The road courses will be a challenge and the other plate races are crapshoots but the rest of the tracks may work in their favor with the FR9 under the hood. Your thoughts?
The good news is there aren't any road courses in the Chase and only one plate race. With five at cookie cutter mile and a half tracks, Kenseth definitely could be a factor.
What do you think of ed hinton's article yesterday about tracks. If nascar like every other sport had the same configuration for its tracks, would the sport be better or worse?
I like the mixture the way it is, although I'd eliminate a few mile and a half tracks and add an Iowa and another road course.
Is this just a ploy to make nice with Dale Jr to maybe win over some of the Jr Nation? I don't care for Dale Jr or Kyle (my driver is JJ) but it seems weird that Kyle taked all this trash about Dale Jr every chance he got in 08/09 insulted Dale Jr's fans and now he says he has no problem with Dale Jr? For the record I think Kyle was right about some of Jr's fans being crazy.
Kyle is a complicated man, isn't he?
Hi David! The Richmond spring race is one of my favourite races of the year. What's your can't-miss race and why?
This is one of my favorites as well. Firt one I've missed in a while. I put Darlington and Martinsville on my can't miss list.
It appears this fastball got by me...Why is Trevor Bayne in the hospital?
More tests from the insect bite that hospitalized him a few weeks ago. They are concerned with the symptoms lingering.
Currently on the road to Richmond. Left Indiana at 5am (11 drive). Gas prices and the economy won't slow me from seeing my first race at RIR. Teams have the Phoenix tires and most have cars used at Phoenix. Does that mean those who ran well at Phoenix will be good at RIR?
Glad to see nothing is slowing you down. Just make sure the cops don't. As for the favorites, I believe the guys who typically do well at Richmond will do so again. That's Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne, Tony Stewart, etc.
Any chance of a second-tier racing league going independent, if NW continues to be such a travesty and the track dates are dominated by two corporations? A 12 race lineup with 20 cars and tracks like Rockingham, Iowa, and North Wilkesboro might get a little attention, you think? Do you think you might see some NW guys go to such a circuit?
I do not. Would take too much money and not sure there's anybody out there with that these days. But I'd love to see The Rock, Iowa and North Wilkesboro on the schedule.
Why does everyone keep saying Jr took Kyle's ride? Casey Mears was chosen to stay over Kyle it had nothing to do with Jr even Kyle says so. Are you just stirring up the octo?
You're right, Kyle had burned enough bridges at HMS that there was a feeling he needed to go. That Dale Jr. was coming available made it alot easier, though. Don't you think?
How serious is this situation with Bayne? Effects from a bug bite lasting this long could be pretty serious it sounds.
Not as much serious as something that needs to be taken care of before it gets serious. I suspect we'll see him back next week.
Sometimes I wish we could blow up the schedule and start from scratch. There are 28 tracks that Nascar's top 3 divisions run at. I say we start a 5-year project so that in the next 5 years each one of these tracks has to invest the $ needed to handle a sprint cup race, and if they due they are guaranteed 1 date. If not, then we can give out those spots to either other tracks that are interested or double up at a few venues. Make each race 400 laps or miles the most, with a few longer events for historical purpose. If a few other tracks with amenities, ala Rockingham, are interested then grant them a race also under a trail period of 3 years. 30 events the most, end the season in October, shorter races and lots of variety. Also, run mostly companion races w/ Nationwide and Trucks to generate larger crowds keep the costs for the teams down. Thoughts?
Like much of what you say. I'm pretty sure NASCAR wouldn't blow up the schedule, but I did in a column I believe last year where I redid the whole thing. Started and ended the season at Daytona, had Darlington and a road course in the Chase, etc.
How come no feel good story on TBR getting Golden Corral and Big Red. Congrats to them
You're right, congrats. That team is starting to garner some attention. Was under the assumption we were posting something on that.
It's not Rowdy's charity, it is Hamlin's. How's the weather look up there? I'm down here on Southside and it hasn't been that bad today.
I know it's Hamlin's charity, although Kyle Busch has a sponsor that has promised $5,000 to the Kyle Busch Foundation if Busch wins Hamlin's race. Busch has offered to match that. Glad to hear the weather is holding up.
When will NASCAR get smart and put us in the Chase? It's still warm here in early September...
How about Sonoma. They serve wine there.
Any word on Mark Martin's plans - full-time or part time next year? What about the rumor that he will run a partial Cup schedule for JRM to help them get ready to bring Danica to cup in 2013?
He hopes to run fulltime, buthasn't annoucned anythi gyet. I'm told JRM plans to run two fulltime Nationwide teams and has backed off plans for Cup. Danica likely will be in Cup next year.
i honestly think kyles mentality of wreckers or checkers isnt gonna win him a championship
Think you're wrong. He doesn't wreck people like many believe. Yes, he's aggressive. But he doesn't do it in a wreckless way. Wrote an article last year around this time where Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon and many others totally agreed.
Fearless prediction: Carl Edwards in the #20 with The Home Depot on the hood. You don't pass up a chance to get Cousin Carl to keep Joey Logano and you know the Gibbs' and Toyoto would win a bidding war with Jack "Tight in the Pockets" Roush.
That's my thinking.
Let me save the idiots some time here...Do y'all think Junior will break his losing streak this week, I sher hope he do.
He has a good shot. He's good at Richmond.
Jr could put on a black hat...that does not make him a bad guy. Same as Kyle putting on a white hat doesnt make him a good guy.
How much longer do I have before I should start seeking employment elsewhere?
You aren't already? Think you're safe for a few more years though.
Of all the winners besides Bayne this year, who do you think is the LEAST likely to get another?
If you make me pick, Kenseth.
Who are your top 5 finishers for Sat. night?
Kyle, Tony, Joey, Junior and Denny
Are you and Chris having a private chat?
He is relentless. Free country and chat. First come first serve.
David, one more article out of you like todays and your invited to the Busch house for Thanksgiving
My dream could come true.
Newt, why do you take the octo questions. Its easy to see which ones are jsut trying to make the people reading angry
As Kyle Busch said yesterday, it's easier to make people mad than make them love you.
David - Don't worry about the people complaining about the coverage of Kyle...they do the same thing about Junior. People should just accept the fact that the two most polarizing figures in NASCAR today are Kyle & Junior and last time I checked they didn't have to read the article or comment about it.
Thanks. But I would perfer them read the article.
When are we going to start seeing "It's about time Hamlin grew up?" articles? He's had plenty of run-ins with other drivers, he's always quick to point the finger at his crew and other drivers, and he sure isn't handling high expectations well.
Thought we got them all out of the way a few years ago. Maybe it's time to rethink.
I just want to clarify that the race tonight is for the Denny Hamlin Foundation and is not affiliated with "Rowdy" as was mentioned earlier.
Think we are clear. Not sure who mentioned, but it definitely is Denny's race. Kyle just has a side bet to benefit his foundation.
David, When Chicagoland first opened if you wanted a Cup ticket you had to buy a 4 race package. Now you don't. I couldn't get a Cup ticket but was able to attend the then Busch Races. I was glad I got to see a dozen Cup drivers in those races. Let the Cup guys race and the others gain the experience against some of the best. Later, Bill
Glad the package deal is out of the way. Think that hurt the sport. As for Cup guys in Nationwide, agreed.
Let me start off by saying I am NOT a Kyle Bush fan. I am a Dale Jr. Fan. But, Kyle seems to be way more dangerous as a race driver with his new and improved attitude. But, wasn't it much more interesting when he was acting like a complete idiot?
It was more interesting. And he is very dangerous now.
Do you see "Smoke" becoming a title contender this year? He has had problems closing and getting the win. Is his team getting it together or are they in need of a lot more work?
I do think he's frustrated, but I suspect he'll be in the thick of things come the Chase.
Why would Edwards leave Roush? Especially if the whole team keeps doing this well and if he does would Bayne or Stenhouse replace him?
Because a team capable of winning the title with a large sponsor willing to pay more might be enticing.
Thanks for all the questions. If you have more follow me on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn and I'll try to answer more. Later.
