Welcome to the chat. It's our last one before Thursday's draft so let's get to it.
Now with the lockout removed, should the cowboys be looking at signing free-agents like Safety Michael Huff or CB Nnamdi Asomugha or any potential starting DB's?
No. I don't like the team trying to get Asomugha. With the team cutting payroll Asomugha will cost them on average $7 million to $9 million a season. Plus, get a younger corner in the draft or develop Bryan McCann as a fourth corner. As far as Huff is concerned, he's OK. But the team has two younger safeties, Danny McCray and Barry Church who are worth looking at in 2011.
What do you think the chances of us taking Moore with our second round pick are?
Stephen Jones said it best on Tuesday afternoon: The safety class isn't very deep. The best pick here would be finding a pass rusher, maybe a 3-4 defensive end or an outside linebacker. Bruce Carter from North Carolina would be an interesting choice in the second round. He was just cleared to play by Dr. Andrews.
Hey Calvin - OT Tyron Smith at #9, trading down to select a defensive player in J.J. Watt or another top O-lineman, attempting a move up to draft Patrick Peterson, trading back into round 1 to select a second key player. All of the scenarios have been mentioned in past weeks. When all is done after day 1 of the draft, how do you see things playing out and who do you see as the newest member(s) of the Cowboys?
I think the Cowboys are going to trade down and hope Tyron Smith from USC or Anthony Castonzo from BC are still around in the mid rounds. It's a risk worth taking if Smith drops a little bit. Castonzo has played more but Smith seems to have more upside.
Couldn't the cowboys trade down in the first round and take Pouncey and still get a tackle with starting capabilities in the 2nd? That would sure up the line and rahim Moore (ucla) and Quinton Carter (oklahoma) would still be available at safety.
I wouldn't mind a trade down as I think the team will do, but get the tackle. Pouncey is good but Smith and Castonzo and Gabe Carimi fill a need at right tackle. I think you can get away with Gurode and Davis inside for at least another year.
I was listening to The Herd. Von Miller was and he said that he wanted to be a cowboy, any chance they get Miller?
Nope. I talked to Von Miller and he would love to play for the Cowboys. Had posters in his room and everything. But his stock has risen so much he's going to be a Top 5 pick. He will not fall to No. 9.
I noticed the boys brought in wr j. baldwin and a few others for a predraft visit. Do you see them drafting another wideout this year?
Hard to say because I'm not sure what they do with Roy Williams. Everybody wnats to see him cut. But if you do that who is your No. 3 receiver. Kevin Ogletree still hasn't shown he's ready to move up the depth chart. Ogletree is a talented player and Jason Garrett likes him, but he has to perform on the field. If the Cowboys draft a wideout that could lead to Williams going bye-bye.
Do you see the Cowboys selecting a QB or RB in this years class?
I think they should draft at least a QB, but I do believe this team will stockpile defensive and offensive lines. Running backs? No stay away from that spot.
how bout ILB? it hasnt been mentioned and i think we need depth over there... any chance they get it at 2nd or 3rd round?
Nate Irving, NC State, Greg Jones, Michigan State and Akeem Dent from Georgia are possible selections in rounds two-to-four for Dallas. Sean Lee is a projected starter in 2012, maybe this year if he beats out James or Brooking. So it's worth looking into.
Do you think there is anyway that the boys trade up a bit to pick patrick Peterson? I know there are alot of rumors out there saying that Jerry has him at the top of his big board
If the Cowboys have Peterson at the top of their board, that's great. He's a fantastic talent who has the potential to become a shutdown corner in this league who can also return kicks. I doubt if Dallas moves up. Not worth it. You need a new tackle and this is a good draft for them, so get one.
Any chance we take a QB that falls late into the second to groom behind Romo? McGee is not the answer.
Doesn't make sense to draft a QB in second round, when the front office believes in Kitna as the No. 2 and has hopes for McGee as a future No. 2. It's a pretty good class for quarterbacks but the top ones are first rounders and early second round guys. Don't waste a pick on a QB. Take care of your needs.
To make the Cowboy's defense better right now, shouldn't they draft the best d-lineman on the board at 9?
That's an interesting question, Jake. The team offered tender offers to Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher and will let Marcus Spears test the market. Igor Olshansky is fine at the other DE spot. There are some good 3-4 ends out there and the Cowboys want to play a two-gap scheme under Rob Ryan. However, you need a OFFENSIVE TACKLE. Get a tackle. In the second or third rounds find another end.
Any chance that Jerry Jones would either move up late first round, or take him at their normal spot (if he's there) for Mallett? We know his love for the Razorbacks, and maybe it'd serve as notice for Tony Romo to play up to his potential because he's got Mallett sitting behind him?
I don't believe Mr. Mallett will be selected on Thursday evening by any NFL team. That's not because he can't play. I like his skills, but there appears to be too many off-the-field issues that has his stock falling. Jerry's best Arkansas pick to date was Felix Jones. He won't pick Mallett.
Calvin two questions. A. assuming Cam Newton is still available @ #9, do you see the Cowboys and 'Skins make a huge deal to swap places? & B. whats your take on the cowboys possible taking Mrk Ingram in the first round? Does he remind Jerry of Emmitt?
Forget about Cam Newton. Dallas isn't going there. Scouts do like Ingram's ability and a Cowboys official told me Ingram does have that Emmitt feel to him. The Cowboys have other needs and getting Ingram in the first round doesn't make sense.
Let's go over team needs real quick: Offensive line, safety, cornerback, defensive line, inside linebacker.
If the Cowboys select Ryan Mallet can I jump on the Saints bandwagon?
Just jump on the Giants bandwagon too.
Any chance the cowboys would look for a slot receiver in the later rounds maybe Denarious Moore from Tennessee?
Here's what Scouts Inc. had to say about Mr. Moore:"Lacks initial burst. Takes four of five strides for him to get going but he does show a very good second-gear on intermediate and vertical routes. Knows how to tempo his routes and continues to improve his craftiness as a route runner. Knows how to used subtle moves with his shoulders, feet and head to help gain separation. Lacks ideal change-of-direction skills and rounds off too many of his routes."
Turning to the defensive side, is Prince Amukamara off the board for Dallas at #9? He was mentioned for weeks in many mock drafts as a Cowboys target but his name seems to have all but disappeared from their landscape. Possible smokescreen? Seems he would be a terrific fit in the secondary for a team that had major struggles there last season.
He's not off the board, but with the Cowboys planning on keeping all their CBs, the offensive line seems to be a more pressing need right now. I agree early in the offseason draft process, the Prince was on everybody's mock drafts. Everything changed the last few weeks and offensive line has emerged as an area of need.
Are we ever going to win another Super Bowl?
Sure one day.
Do you think or do you know if teams pay any attention to these message boards/chats to see what the fans are thinking?
I'm sure they do. Teams won't admit it, but some team official is looking at it to get a laugh.
If the Cowboys do trade down into the teens, what picks could they get in return?
If they move down, Dallas should get an extra third rounder.
Would you rather see JJ take DE like Watt/Jordan with the 9th pick or OT Smith/Castanzo? Defense was our achilles heel according to the stats, but not sure Colombo is going to be on the team once "business" starts up again.
A month ago, I thought DE/OLB was the perfect choice and I never liked taking a corner at No. 9 unless it was Peterson. Saying that, I've changed my mind and think T is the best way to go. Dallas has spoken with several defensive linemen who are draft eligible so selecting one at some point in rounds two to three wouldn't surprise me.
The Cowboys are on the clock at #40 after selecting Tyron Smith at #9. Rahim Moore, Brandon Harris, Aaron Williams, and Ras-I Dowling are all available. What does Jerry Jones do? What would you do?
The easy answer is Rahim Moore from UCLA. But Brandon Harris would be my choice.
hi calvin!would castonzo be considered a reach if picked at 9?
No way. Caastonzo can play right away. You're not reaching if you get him now.
If peterson falls to 7 or 8 dont we have to move up and grab him?...He seems like that game changer in secondary we could have for years to come...Then go sign a tackle in free agency for a year or 2
Yeah, move up and grab him, but he's not falling down and if he does, then something is wrong with him.
If everything plays out how you expect it to, what DL do you see being the best available for Dallas to pick in the 2nd round?
I like Brooks Reed, Cameron Heyward and Muhammad Wilkerson in the second round. Not sure if Heyward will be there though, might be a late first rounder. Same with Wilkerson.
at 40 the easy answer would be Aaron Williams
Are you saying that because he went to Texas?
Do you think CB Nnamdi Asomugha is right for our defense if we wanna be in the Super Bowl next year? And another thing why do you think the Cowboys are going to do bad next year?
I like Asomugha. He's an excellent corner. An elite player. But he costs too much money and besides the team is sticking with Newman, Scandrick and Jenkins. I picked the Cowboys to finish 7-9 in 2011. Last year I picked them to finish 10-6 and reach the NFC title game. This team is not as talented as everyone thinks and it's getting old. The window to win a title is getting smaller and smaller by the minute. Team needs to get younger at the inside linebacker, offensive line, defensive line and corner spots. It's going to take this year and next to make that happen.
Calvin, With all the CBA headaches.. once a player is drafted are they locked out after ?
Hard to say because the lockout was lifted and the owners are trying to get a stay. Once the legal issues are sorted out in the next 48 hours we may know more.
pretty sure Aaron Williams goes before Rahim Moore...not sure about Brandon Harris. my guess Harris to the Ravens in rd 1, Williams to the Steelers in rd 1, and Moore to the Texans in rd 2.
Maybe. But it's wishful thinking on my part to believe Harris will be around in round 2. I think he's a player.
what do you think the chances of Dallas going DE in first round and 2nd round maybe a player like James Carpenter to play that RT spot or do you think its too big of a risk to gamble Carpenter will still be there at 40?
I would say the best thing to do is get one of the best tackles in the draft at No. 9. Smith or Castonzo. Get a defensive end or safety in round 2. This is not a draft to be cute. This team lost 10 games last season and you have some needs. So get elite talent at No. 9 and 40 and move on.
Couldnt agree with you less on sticking with Newman who costs $9 million in salary this year. Why not dump his salary and go after the younger and better Asomungha
I'm not saying I agree with keeping Newman. But he's going to make $8 million in base salary this year and his cap number is $10 mil. The team believes he can produce again. Remember the man reached the Pro Bowl in 2009.
Guys it's been fun. I have a lunch date. Take care.
