Greetings from Day 2 of the NFL Draft! Josh and I are back from Radio City to answer your questions and give you the play-by-play of what's going on inside Radio City. My early report is that the cookies and desert spread available are incredible. But I digress. Don't want to keep you waiting any longer (unlike poor Bowers) so let's get to chatting!
Thanks DM...roughly 4,892 questions about Ryan Mallett. For example:
Who do you think will draft Ryan Mallet, and do you think the raiders have a chance to get him?
Where do you think Ryan Mallett and D. J. Williams will end up?
When will Ryan mallet get drafted
...and trust me, there are plenty more. OK, from what we're hearing it looks like Cincinnati with the 3rd pick in the 2nd round could be a potential landing spot for Mallett. Apparently, the Bengals Plan A is Andy Dalton and their Plan B is Mallett. Lots of buzz around Dalton with the top pick in the 2nd round.
Do you think the bengals will try to draft a qb?
This seems pretty certain, J. Apparently the Bengals were trying to make a deal with the Packers last night to acquire their first round pick in hopes of drafting Andy Dalton. Seems like they are anxious to find Carson Palmer's replacement today. We'll see if they're able to get Dalton or if they end up with another QB but that is certainly the position they are tagetting.
do you think the cardinals will still be going with best player available or turn to needs
I think the Cardinals are focused on finding a QB and will try and figure out a way to do that whether it be through drafting another best available as trade bait or taking one of the remaining QBs and potentially using him.
When will Ryan mallett get drafted
So many Ryan Mallet questions coming through. I think we're looking at a 2-1 ratio on Mallet questions versus all others. I would imagine he will go in the 2nd round but it seems, as Josh said a little while ago, that Dalton will more than likely be the next QB taken. A number of teams are interested in him, most notable the Bengals.
Any insight on Bowers?
Bowers has to be the second-most asked about player thus far today, James. His agent has been working overtime to convince teams his knee is all better but it doesn't seem to be very convincing. Combine the injury concern with a less-than-stellar pro day and unfortunately you'll see a projected top ten slip like this. I think most experts have him as the best available remaining though and I would think he would be one of the first guys to hear his name called today. Haven't heard any specific teams though planning on taking him.
Only a handful of fans in the building so far. Yesterday had less-than-average numbers so I can't imagine today will be much better. There isn't a ton of incentive to come tonight if you didn't come yesterday. Can only imagine how few people show tomorrow.
D'Arcy, will you marry me?
Sure. Can we wait until after the draft though?
Will the pats take bowers or do the usual trade down
It just makes sense to me that Bill Belichick will take a chance on Bowers. They've done it before and with all the picks they've accumulated, I can see them doing it again. For partially the same reasons, I can see Dallas potentially taking a chance as well.
What chance is there of New Orleans trading up for a second round pick? Also, where do you think would be a good fit for DT Drake Nevis and QB Greg McIlroy?
I think you can't count anything out this year as far as trades go. I'm really high on Nevis and McElroy as mid-round selections. Guys who were very productive at a high level in college. Nevis best fits a defensive scheme like Denver or Houston while McElroy is exactly the type of smart football the Patriots love to draft.
What do you think is better value left, db, lb, de. All positions of need for the cowboys.
For the Cowboys, there are plenty of DB options. Brandon Harris, Kendric Burney and Aaron Williams at CB and DeAndre McDaniel, Deunta Williams, Quinton Carter, Robert Sands and Rahim Moore at S.
do u think the giants will get offensive line help in the second round
They certainly need it. Someone like Wisconsin's John Moffitt or Nova's Ben Ijalana. In later rounds, or maybe even tomorrow, someone like Marcus Gilbert from Florida or the U's Orlando Franklin.
Are the Bengals going to take a QB today? Which available quarterback would best suit their needs, team, etc.?
I'll go out on a limb and say yes (see first answer in this chat). If it's not Dalton, it should be Mallett. I suppose Kaepernick is in play as well but it's been reported that Cincy likes the first 2 the most.
Do you think the patriots trade down the first pick? If they do, what are the chances of them getting a 2012 1st round pick for it?
Definitely possible. If you give Bill Belichick a full 24 hours to plot a draft move, you can rest assured he'll come prepared. I expect the Patriots to move off the pick and wouldn't be surprised at all to see them get a 1st-rounder in return somehow.
With two early 2nd rounders, what do you think the Redskins will do?
Possible they try to move up to the 33rd overall selection to grab Dalton. Total guess.
Josh, how good of a chance is there of Alabama's QB McIlroy going to the Cowboys?
It makes sense. The Cowboys still probably view Stephen McGee as their backup of the future but a smart, accurate QB like McElroy is almost an immediate upgrade there. My opinion.
Does Kyle Rudolph fall to the Rams and since Mcdaniels love TEs do they take him?
You're talking about the 15th pick in the 2nd round I assume. That would be pretty decent value for the top TE in the draft since some had him going as high as 27th to Atlanta. Giving Bradford more weapons in the passing game has to be paramount for the Rams.
D'Arcy, given the unquestioned affinity and connection between England and New England and the deep love for all things royal in Boston, will the Royal Wedding have any impact on who the Patriots draft?
I'm glad you brought this crucial point up, CDN. I heard Belichick's strategy behind trading the Pats' first round pick was in hopes of landing sleeper pick Pippa Middleton here in the second round. Sadly I don't think that will happen. But I would imagine the Patriots staff is all quite exhausted from their 4 AM wakeup to watch Will and Kate's big day. I kid, I kid. I can't imagine Belichick watching anyone's wedding, let alone two strangers he's never met.
Where do you think the niner's will go in rounds 2 and 3? Is mallet a possibility?
With all the buzz around Mallett and Dalton at the top of the 2nd round, San Fran (and anyone not named New England or Buffalo) will almost certainly need to trade up to land one of the 2 of them.
Will the lions get a good CB this round and look like geniuses for their draft so far?
All the way from Shanghai!! Nice. Seems weird to say things like "geniuses" and "Lions" in the same draft-related sentence but that is entirely possible. If the Lions can improve their defensive secondary to go along with that BEAST of a pass rush they've begun to assemble, count me as a believer.
Where do you think aaron Williams from Texas will end up?
Top half of the 2nd round. Dallas with the 8th pick or Houston with the 10th pick would make almost too much sense.
Will the eagles finally get a corner or do you think they will wait to try and get nnamdi in FA?
I've heard Philly's name being tossed around for Asomugha along with Dallas and Houston. Certainly possible they could target a CB tonight. Plenty of depth available.
What team do you think needs Akeem Ayers the most.
I'll say the Giants. They could use more help at the ILB position but really, the entire LB corps could use an upgrade. Offensive line may be a bigger need in the 2nd round though. OL class is looking pretty thin at the moment.
who wil take Robert sands?
Couldn't tell you. But I can tell you that whomever does will get one of the drafts most intriguing prospects. Sands is a ball hawk at almost 6'5" 240 lbs who can play safety or possibly even transition to OLB. I saw him first hand at the Combine and he's a very very good looking mid-round prospect.
All 32 team alumni who will be annoucing the team picks took the stage a few moments ago. Stark contrast from the nervous 21-year-olds that faced the crowd yesterday.
You gous have any insight to Dereck Sherrod? What kind of player can the Packer fans expect next season? (If there is a season!)
First, I think there is little to no chance there won't be a season in the fall. Things are certainly not fully resolved at this point but I think it will be by the time the season is supposed to kick off. I wouldn't worry too much about that. As for Sherrod, he really gained a ton of buzz as the draft approached and has a ton of potential for the defending champs.
Second round is about to get underway!
Everyone be prepared for something you have NEVER seen before!! Instead of the last pick in the 7th Rd, the MN Vikings will draft Mr. Irrelevant with their 2nd Rd Pick!!
Glad to see you back with us today, Brendan. Always good to have an angry Vikes fan in our presence providing us live commentary on all of the team's picks. Keep 'em coming.
Goodell takes the stage. More boos. I actually couldn't hear a word he just said. But the Pats are on the clock.
Do you think New England should have traded or kept that 1st round pick
The Patriots obviously didn't think there was anyone worth taking yesterday with the No. 28 pick that they couldn't get now at 33. Hard to argue with that. This seems to be a pretty typical draft strategy for NE in recent years and they've done pretty well as a result so it's hard to criticize it. We'll see who they take. Kind of interesting they're taking so much time. Considering they've had 20 or so hours to think about it and all...
Who do you think is going to be the first pick in the 2nd round
We're about to find out.
Ras-I Dowling. Love the pick. Injuries limited his playing time but he's a big corner, great athlete and will make a solid tandem with Devin McCourty.
A bit surprised the Patriots actually made that pick. Maybe they were tired of trading back. Seems like everyone is expecting the run of QBs to start here with Buffalo.
Or not. Bills make it back-to-back corners at the top of the 2nd round. Quality pick in Williams.
Any chance the redskins get marvin austin to help out with our d line
I would've said yes before the first 2 picks of the 2nd round. Seems like the QBs are sliding. Redskins could be looking at Dalton, Mallett or Kaepernick.
Looks like we have a trade -- 49ers moving up in trade with the Broncos. QB?
When do you think the 49ers will take a qb and who do you think it will be?
Looks like it could be right now. San Fran just acquired Denver's pick. Just guessing here, but the fact that they already possessed the 13th pick in the 2nd round leads me to believe they panicked once Dalton came off the board. Again, total guess.
If we don't see the 49ers take a QB today, not saying that Harbaugh will throw the season, but any chance he's already thinking about getting "Luck-y" next year?
That's what I would've though originally...but it looks like San Fran is looking for a QB right now.
Bengals take Dalton in the least surprising pick of the day. Guess that's good news for Carson Palmer. Although I'm not sure what it means for his brother Jordan...
49ers trade up to snag Kaepernick before Mallett. Very very interesting. You have to wonder what teams perception of Mallett really is and how far he could potentially slide here.
Do u think the bills defense has improved so far?
Marcell Dareus and Aaron Williams? Yeah, it's safe to say the Bills defense has added some playmakers thus far.
What direction do you see the raiders going for there first pick?
Speed. Nevada LB Dontay Moch or Maryland WR Torrey Smith are possibilities.
What do you think about the bengals selction in qb andy dalton?
I think it's a pick they never wanted to make but the fact that they did make it probably speaks volumes about how they feel the Carson Palmer situation will play out. Dalton is a winner, first and foremost, a smart QB with an accurate arm. He's not huge but he gets the job done. Like the pick.
Steelers running out of chances to get up for a corner... any chance of them getting up for Harris from the U?
I doubt Pittsburgh (or anyone) would trade up at this point for a CB. There is plenty of depth at the position right now. Guys like Harris, Burney, Burton, Patrick and more.
Hearing RB Ryan Williams to the Cards here.
Here's the trade...
49ers acquired 36th overall pick from Broncos for 45th overall pick, 4th and 5th round selections
Can you shed any light on the browns 2nd round de
Very athletic but slowed by injuries to his elbow and thumb. Biggest knock against him may be the fight he was involved that led to him being thrown through a glass door, then pepper-sprayed and arrested. Doesn't have great size but has a good motor and exceptional top-end speed.
Kaepernick before Mallett, and Ayers and Bowers still on the board. Which one do you think will go first?
Just a guess. Ayers.
That was a heck of an embrace between the commish and Ryan Williams. I guess that's the reward you get for sticking around Radio City for 24 hours. He's brought an entourage of 30+ on stage with him. Another consolation prize for his patience.
I need to say that I love what Arizona has done so far. Patrick Peterson and Ryan Williams were 2 of the most productive players in college football the last 2 years.
ESPN Insider Chris Sprow reporting the Cowboys are about to draft North Carolina LB Bruce Carter
Do you see the bears going wideout or dline with their next pick or do they move down?
I think they'd like to go d-line with someone like Marvin Austin but it may be a stretch to say he'd be there 22 picks from now. Could be a couple WRs around at that time. Randall Cobb from Kentucky perhaps.
Who would've guessed Da'Quan Bowers wouldn't have been the 1st Clemson defensive lineman drafted??!!
Who do you think the chiefs should draft?
KC is sitting at the 23rd pick in the 2nd round and still needs dome o-line help. I'd guess Ben Ijalana from Villanova.
Adam Schefter reporting a temporary stay has been granted and the lockout is back in force. Yay.
So... to make this situation even more awkward and confusing. The motion for a temporary stay has been granted. The lockout is back on. Bad news for any players currently working out in the team facilities.
Where do you think Vince young will land this offseason? It seems that all teams in need of a qb have drafted one.
Tough to say, Marcus. Can't imagine too many teams are clamoring to get Young this offseason. Or when there is technically an offseason. Obviously he had a ton of potential, talent, etc. but his off-the-field issues are too large in my mind to be a starting QB next season. Would think a team with a veteran starter would consider signing him as a backup. You could certainly get worse. But he's got a lot to prove in every aspect before he's starting for any squad. We'll see.
How much time do teams have to pick in round 2?
Seven minutes for the second round, Kove. Seems like a lot more teams are using the full time today than yesterday. Although I'm still not sure why the Patriots needed the full time. Seeing as they had a full 18 hours to think about it.
Barry Sanders takes the stage to, by far, the loudest crowd reaction of the day. 'Barry' chant completely masks his announcement of the pick. Sorry about that Titus Young. There goes the moment you've waited for your whole life.
Do you think the patriots will trade for ochocinco or even Steve smith from the panthers
I know Ocho has made a public case for wanting to join the Pats. And the Jets. And essentially any team with a winning record. But he has one year left on his remaining contract and I'm not sure if any team takes the chance with a trade for him at this point. Although if he pulls a Carson Palmer and leaves the Bengals with no choice, I could see a team like the Patriots pulling the trigger and giving up very little in return. It's certainly a risk with a guy like Chad (in large part due to his gigantic personality) but he's a got a ton of talent and could be a good addition. I would think he'll be playing for the Bengals for one more year honestly though.
Really? Bowers gets drafted and you dont even acknowledge it? ...anything?
Bowers has not been selected yet. There seems to be some confusion on the interwebs about this. Hope he's not following along with that coverage. He is still waiting for his name to be called.
Rahim Moore's almost 24 hours of waiting is finally over. His family seems relieved as they take the stage. I'm just impressed these families knew to pack two outfits just in case.
Due to the lockout and legal wrangling, and even following this draft from home, it feels like the strangest "sporting event" I have witnessed in a long time. Like trying to break up with your high school sweetheart but not sure if you should.
Comment of the day so far. Nice analogy, Mike. Was interested to see if anyone at the Draft would acknowledge that the lockout was back on but I think people are just trying to ignore it. Guessing there will be no more hugs from Goodell though. Don't think Moore got the honor.
Do you think there is ANY chance the Vikings will trade up to make up for our Randy Moss/3rd Rd Pick debacle? Please ..... I just need a little hope. I'm hanging by a thread here ...
You didn't like the way that Moss deal worked out for you, Brendan? Keep the bitterness coming.
Will bowers get picked in the 2nd round? If he does will the pats get him?
Goodness, D'Arcy, what would happen if Bowers did NOT get picked today? Would he stay in the Commish's suite overnight? Or does the lack of a CBA prevent that? Jess askin'....
Thankfully his ego, pride, dignity, patience, etc. Bowers is not here at Radio City. If no team takes him today, I'm starting my own UFL team and making him an offer. At least that league is actually operating. That's my selling point. On a serious note, I don't see any way he doesn't get taken today. I know his knee is a serious concern but to not take him in the third round would be insane. There are far riskier picks out there.
Chris Sprow is back and ready to take your questions by popular demand. Here he is...
So what do you think of the Cards drafting Williams? I'm torn...
Found it a little odd, to be honest. If you're saying, "Why not a QB?" however, there wasn't one ready to start next year anyway. And not just in Round 2 -- I mean in the entire draft.
Do you think bowers will fall to the chargers
Bowers is a total mystery right now. Get the sense any team drafting him assume a "red-shirt" year. But you're talking about, when healthy, a legit Top 10 talent. Can't last forever.
Think the skins will grab mallet? Or do you think shannahan will see if the eagles have any other washed up qb's for us to overpay for
I do not. At least this early. As they move down and he's still around, perhaps. Remember Colt McCoy last year, where we thought Cleveland could get him at No. 36, instead they get him nearly 40 picks later.
How do you rate the Viking's draft so far ?
Rudolph is actually a good value. Do think Ponder was a bit of a reach, but that happens with QBs when you really think you have your guy. But other needs are out there, no question. I'd give it a C+. Ground to make up.
What do you think of the Raiders taking little Wiz?
They need help on the interior of that O-line. Safe pick, good lineage. He'll fit in well.
Chris, yesterday you mentioned that the Cards might have been drafting Peterson for the Eagles as part of a future deal involving Kolb. Do you still think that that's a serious possibility?
I only say that when you draft a big-time talent, you have a commodity there that can be leveraged. That's absolutely a team with the mind-set that the trade market or free agency will be the answer at QB. They aren't going to see a talented team held hostage while a rookie develops at the key position. So sure, anything is a possibility if you think you can get a franchise QB.
Do Chiefs have a shot a Bowers?
Everybody does. His free-fall could stop anywhere.
what did the skins get in the trade with the colts?
Moved down a few spots and added a couple later picks. Gotta say, diggin' the Skins getting into the whole idea that having draft picks can actually be a good thing.
What do you think of the Titus young pick by the lions?
I like it. Mel had heard that he was in the mix as high as No. 32 to Green Bay. Great hands, great returner. Like a young Burleson, which makes sense, no?
Da'Quan Bowers to Tampa.
What are the Vikings doing? They seem to be reaching with all their picks.
Rudolph isn't a reach -- question is need. Schiancoe isn't terrible, right?
When do you think Justin Houston will be drafted?
Soon. Very soon.
What would you rate the texansso far
Texans have done great work at need positions. 3-4 DE, 3-4 OLB pass-rusher for a line that needs help, bad.
Who are the best Gs left out there. Pack need help to prevent repeat of '62 Thanksgiving!
How about John Moffitt from your back yard? (If he's in your back yard, that's clutch.)
Urrgh... Saints have to play against Clayborn and Bowers twice a year. Which NFC South team is having the best draft so far?
You have to love what the Bucs are doing, but you just got Cameron Jordan and Mark Ingram. It's Friday, pour one and relax. Toss up between Saints, Bucs in my eyes.
Chris, which WR will probably be picked next? Thanks.
Leonard Hankerson, if you ask me. Oh, you did. Leonard Hankerson.
Chris, with the addition of Clayborn and now Bowers. What do you think of the Bucs pass rush now? And where else do you think is a need?
Bucs remind me of Detroit, trying to make an area of recent improvement a serious strength. Now, remember, they got zip from DEs last year. I also like how those two are very different players. Bowers with speed, moves; Clayborn will drive you into the quarterback's lap.
This is not really a draft question but hearing that the lockout is back into effect and the players drafted today can't get a playbook what's to stop the players who got a playbook yesterday or today from going to Kinkos and making copies for all the guys drafted today or tomorrow? ;)
Just on the suggestion of this, I have reported you to the commish. You may have seen me run a card up to the stage just moments ago. Hide. Hide well.
What do you think the 49ers should do with their next pick? I think they should get a DB or a olb
I'd go DB.
Chris, any astute guess as to which team drafts Mallett?
Seattle at No. 57? And everything I say is astute. How dare you imply otherwise.
What are teams general consensus on Hudson? Can technique overcome his lack of size?
Size is a question, and I was a little surprised Wisniewksi went before him, but he can't last long. Tape stands up.
Thanks for answering all my questions, means a lot. What do you think the Saints will do with their third rd picks? Keep em or trade up? Who should they pick?
I'd go OLB, DT or safety. Hit RB and DE already. Those are top 5 needs in no particular order. Don't trade up; once is plenty considering it cost a Rd. 1 pick.
Do you think that giving all their draft helped The Falcons considering we don't really have many picks to fill our other need?
I love Jones, but I thought it was too much. It's not just this draft -- what about the next two years? This team clearly thinks they have a Super Bowl-caliber roster for next two years. Can't really argue with them.
How would you grade the colts draft so far. Never heard of they guy from nova.
Ijalana is really good. Can start immediately at guard. You guys have to get younger on O-line. Peyton is 35, protect at all costs.
do the buffalo bills will take ryan mallet?
Wouldn't put it past Buddy Nix. Good situation for him to serve a year on the bench and be coached up.
What's the best CB the Lions can hope to draft in 3rd?
Maybe Kenric Burney from UNC or Chimdi Chekwa from (The) Ohio State University.
Lots of reports say The Falcons will go after our bigs needs with a wallet open in free agency. I still feel Jones was a good move but if we don't win the Super Bowl in the next two years we may have crippled our team
Come on. You have an elite QB, two solid WRs, a solid defense and a resourceful coaching staff. "Crippled" is a bit strong.
What do you think of the titans draft so far? I love the locker pick!!!
I think it's all wrapped up in Locker. What else can you say? Some consider it a dramatic reach. Some thing Locker can be great.
Chris, do you think other negative stuff will be coming out after the draft about Mallet? I actually thought that he was the most pro-ready QB this year.
How much worse can it get? Guy was once 6th on the Big Board. He could keep falling. It'll all be about how he reacts. Sulk or survive.
Why in the world would the lions draft a wr when they have no need for one and have other holes to fill???
Nate Burleson is entering his 10th year. Young is a borderline first-round guy you get mid second, and he's a big help in the return game. Got no beef with this pick.
No idea who gets him -- 5th or 6th is my guess. He has a shot to be good, right after he appears on The Bachelor, cures cancer and takes my job. I hate the man.
I'll take a couple more, you can gather more wit, wisdom and Road House quotes if you stalk me on Twitter: @Sprow_ESPN
Should have said crippled our defensive youth. Abraham isn't exactly young and Jamaal turned out to be a bust. Secondary is good with grimes being key last year. However we have to wait two years to really get a chance to draft anouther elite pick. Crippled a bit strong but weakened for sure if we don't get out title
Fair. Teams see a title window and they jump. Atlanta is absolutely inside a title window.
Greg McElroy to either NE or INDY, 5th or 6th round. You heard it here first.
I heard it here first.
Hopping out for a bit. Don't fake the funk on a nasty draft pick.
Thanks to Chris for taking all those questions. I can't wait to now hear how much better of a chatter he is than me.
Chris is such a better chatter than D'Arcy. I said it first. Boom.
Just want to express my love for the Lions pick at no. 57. LeShoure with Jahvid Best immediately creates one of the best young backfields in the league. Add in the picks of Titus Young and Nick Fairley and the Lions are actually having...a...good draft? Weird.
Josh, where do you think Mallett will fall to
The Mallett Watch is officially on. The Bengals, 49ers, Titans, Jags, Panthers and Vikings all addressed their QB needs. Who does that leave? Seattle? I'll go there. But with Mallett, the drug allegations were bad enough...but the rumors that he missed a meeting with the Panthers because he was out the night before has to be playing into this slide. He'd be lucky to go in the 2nd round at this point. My opinion.
Do you think Dion Lewis will get drafted this year?
I do. But not until tomorrow. 5th or 6th round probably. Tough reality for an early entry. Lots of quality RBs still on the board (D. Thomas, K. Hunter, D. Murray).
brandon harris still available?whats the knock on him?i saw him going late in the first.
Texans JUST drafted him. Great value.
Where do you think Greg McElroy the QB from alabama will go???
Tons of McElroy questions. I believe Chris mentioned New England or Indianapolis. I'll go New England or Dallas.
Who got the best bang for their buck in the first round?
Cardinals (Peterson), Jags (Gabbert), Lions (Fairley), Rams (Quinn), Ravens (Jimmy Smith) and Saints (Ingram)
Big sooners fan and curious when you think DeMarco Murray and Ryan Broyles will go.Murray had 1200 yds rushing with 15 td's last year,3600 yds and 50 td's for his career and was able to carry a pretty heavy load.Broyles had a great season as well catching 14 td's for 1600 yds with 35 td's @nd 2900 yds in only 3 yrs.why are teams not interested in them at this point?
Quality stat finds out of you. DeMarco Murray is at the top of the 2nd tier of RBs and can expect to come off the board tonight (my guess) but Ryan Broyles will have to wait substantially longer since he decided to return to school next year.
Texans got a corner back. Was that the right choice? If not, who would have been better in your opinion?
My opinion...Harris was the best available CB prospect on the board. Really like Kendric Burney from UNC though. Burton from Utah could be solid as well.
What position do you think the dolphins are going to draft
'Phins just drafted K-State RB Daniel Thomas. Big fan of that pick. Very productive, BIG back who can carry the workload. Ball security is an issue however. Seems like Miami is set on building around Chad Henne for now.
Steelers address thin offensive line with selection of Florida's Marcus Gilbet who is the opposite of thin. 6'6", 330 lbs. Monster.
Do u think my lions gone make the playoffs this year?
Not unless the league realigns before the season starts. Packers and Bears are clearly head and shoulders about the Lions and the Vikings just drafted a young QB to lead a team that was one game away from the Super Bowl 2 years ago. I like what Detroit is doing in the draft but give the young pups some time to develop.
Will the bills take mallet in the 3rd
I think they probably should. Red flags or no red flags, 3rd round is great value for Mallett and Buffalo makes perhaps more sense than anywhere else at this point.
Will my browns make the playoffs now they got a stronger d_line and a good fit wr
It primarily depends on the development of Colt McCoy and they still need to add some beef to the defensive front seven. Same deal as the Lions, their division doesn't help their case for the playoffs.
I know the texans offense is good and their defense is trash, but they can't throw it to Andre Johnson every time
Agreed. Still some quality WRs out there including Leonard Hankerson (who just so happens to train with Andre Johnson). I'd also look for one of these RBs to wind up in Houston. Someone like DeMarco Murray or Jordan Todman can spell Arian Foster and also provide a solid pass-catching option out of the backfield.
Randall Cobb to Green Bay wraps up the 2nd round and Adam Schefter reporting the Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles are expected to be the most aggressive teams in pursuing CB Nnamdi Asomugha.
6th round for Lewis? He is faster and more agile the Emmit Smith. Wouldn't someone find value for him in the 4th?
There are better pro prospects out there than Lewis in the 4th. He was insanely productive 2 seasons ago at Pitt when he ran for 1,799 yards. He fell off a bit last year rushing for just over 1,000. He's listed at 5'7", 193 lbs. but is almost certainly smaller than that. But hey...Danny Woodhead had a pretty solid year in New England.
It maybe too early to predict where, but what team would Tyrod Taylor be most likely to land on
He'd be lucky to be drafted at all. My opinion.
Anyone know Greg Little's 40 time? His other combine stats looked off the charts.
Who do you think the Cowboys will draft next?
They need to address their secondary. I've heard reports that they feel like they're set at CB with Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, McCann and Ball (moved from safety). But they were brutal in defending the pass last season and should look at safety in round 3. Deunta Williams, DeAndre McDaniel, Robert Sands or Quinton Carter would make sense.
How do you like the Packers grabbing a wideout with an already stacked core?
I like it. Thinking Cobb was drafted as more of a return threat but his receiving skills certainly come in handy...especially in that offense. Solid pick.
Falcons finally pick again where do they look and who could they possibly get?
Still need an edge rusher. Like Allen Bailey from the U. Guy looks like a beast but has yet to play like one. Good value in later stages of round 3.
Cowboys just drafted DeMarco Murray from Oklahoma. Could possibly spell the end for Marion Barber in Big D. Saints take the best interior LB in this years class, Martez Wilson.
Will Jeff Maehl be drafted and if so by who?
Doubtful. At under 6'1" and not possessing a ton of speed, it's really going to be an uphill battle for the former Oregon receiver to make an impact at the next level. Very good college player who doesn't necessarily translate to the next level.
Best draft so far from NFC North, and overall?
Hard to argue with what the Lions have done.
Patriots are taking Mallett.
Adam Schefter reporting the New England Patriots are about to draft QB Ryan Mallett. Discuss.
Mallet to NE? Are you kidding me? Who knew?
Apparently Bill Belichick. Nobody else though. Seriously. Nobody. Just a jaw dropping selection. Trying to make sense of it. Only thing I can think of is that the Pats loved his arm and upside and are willing to sit on him for a few years and have him learn from one of the best. When you have as many picks as the Patriots do, you can take some chances.
Plus, as we've seen in the past with New England...they're not above trading a young, up and coming QB. Hey, if any team can straighten Mallett out...right??
What do you think about the cowboys taking Murray? How would you rate the Cowboys draft so far?
Glad you asked Dave. I'll give it a solid B. Not crazy about the Tyron Smith pick but I understand upgrading the OL was a priority. Like the Bruce Carter selection but I thought Martez Wilson was a better inside linebacker prospect. Love the Murray pick. Dangerous backfield of Murray, Jones and Choice. Think Barber is probably done in Dallas.
whats up with nate irving
He's a beast. Big fan. After missing the entire 2009 season with injuries suffered in a severe car accident, he returned in 2010 to post this stat line: 92 tackles, 21.5 TFL, 7 sacks, 6 PBU, 3 FF, 2 FR -- He's full of fire and a leader on the field. Love what the Broncos have done on the defensive side of the ball with Miller, Moore and now Irving.
I'm tagging out for a few. Heeeeeeeere's D'Arcy.
Plenty of time to groom the young QB and figure out off the field issues.
I just feel like taking a Mallet question too. Why let Josh have all the fun with that? Interesting to note that's the pick the Pats got from the Randy Moss deal. Have to wonder if there is some sort of karma involved here. But he should have plenty of time to learn under Brady and can't imagine Belichick will let him get away with much on the behavioral end. Could, and that's a big could, end up being the steal of the draft.
Crowd has stopped paying attention to the actual draft and turned their attention almost solely on the drinking aspect. This is probably a good time for the families in attendance to find another place to watch. This might get ugly. Or just really, really entertaining.
Heres a thought, say ryan mallet goes to the....lets say the vikings instead of the patriots, and christian ponder goes to new england, after something wierd(maybe retirement or injury) happens to tom brady, who makes the imidiate impact on their organization, ponder of the patriots or mallet of the vikings?
Dillon! Nice to see you back chatting. I like this question because there is no right answer because it's not actually real. Feel free to send these types in going forward. IF this situation were true, I would think Ponder would have more immediate success comparitively (although not neccesarily actual success) because the Pats have better pieces currently in place and because I'm not sure how Mallet would handle the pressure of instantly entering the league and being a starting QB. I think that's why he's so lucky to be going to a team like the Pats. It's really a best case scenario for him.
Any clue where Akeem Dent might go? Mallett one of the bigger steals or a wasted pick by Pats?
Justin, I am refusing to answer this question as you submitted it 400 times and I can't see any questions from ANYONE ELSE as a result. Cool it on the resend button, will ya?
Let's get your opinion on this draft so far. Who's had the best draft so far? The worst? Which pick has most surprised you?
I'm a huge patriots fan and i think the mallet pick was awesome. His attitude will be shaped up in no time with the leadership in their locker room. and after a few years playing behind brady he will become the franchise player for them. it's just like how brady played behind bledsoe.
Bold. I like your style, Luke. I'm not 100% sold on the pick but I interested to see how it plays out.
Dallas, Detroit and New Orleans have had the best draft
do you think its obvious that the browns have had the best draft and the 49ers the worst by far? i think they reached both times and had to trade up to do so.
I don't think either is true. Best draft thus far has to go to Detroit, New Orleans, Denver, Dallas or Tampa Bay. Worst? Probably Oakland. Reached a bit for Wisniewski and followed that up by drafting DeMarcus Van Dyke, a corner with a ton of speed and not much else.
What's your take on lamichael james an next years draft?
Speed for days but he's undersized and may have issues standing up to the pounding an NFL RB takes. Plus, it could be a pretty strong RB class in 2012 with guys like Trent Richardson, Knile Davis, Cyrus Gray, Dan Herron and Stefan Taylor all possibly in next year's draft.
I cant say i love the patriots draft, although, next year they have two 1st and 2nd round picks. but it's time they draft a real playmaker.
What are the odds someone said the EXACT same thing last year?
What are the Ravens immediate needs?
Maybe some more depth in the secondary. They've done a heck of a job addressing their needs. CB Jimmy Smith was maybe the steal of the 1st round. WR Torrey Smith gives them a deep threat and T Jah Reid is someone who can step in at RT almost immediately and make an impact. Solid draft for Ozzie. Again.
Sidenote: Tonight the Chiefs drafted Georgia LB Justin Houston and Miami DE Allen Bailey. Good luck to all the Chiefs players attempting to use the team weight room this year.
When do u think mark herzlich will go?
At this point, anywhere is a good guess. You know whomever drafts Herzlich is getting a quality individual and someone who will have a positive impact on his team.
Best draft for the Broncos and the Lions. The Texans are pretty high up there as well don't u think?
Tell me what you think of the Bears d line pick? Some mock drafts had him going first round. Good value there?
Anytime you can draft the guy who shattered the Combine bench press record, you made a good decision. Paea is an animal.
Whats your grade for the chargers draft so far? Seems to me like they reached on a lot of players
True, but they added a ton of depth. Like the Vincent Brown pick in the 3rd round. B-
So guys any chance of a response on either of my questions
Thousands upon thousands of questions are pouring in. Does this count as a response?
Do you see Baltimore drafting a RB with mcgahee likely out or a QB to develop with only flacco on the roster
Kendall Hunter from Oklahoma State or Jordan Todman from UConn would fit nice in Baltimore. Could see Ricky Stanzi in a backup role behind Flacco as well. Total guesses.
Can u please tell me what the heck the BRONCOS are doing
Stockpiling defensive playmakers.
When do u think Kendrick burney will get drafted
A little surprised he hasn't been drafted already. Dude's a ball hawk.
Josh, you are the man and I would draft you in the first round. Is it true that Jimmy Smith hasn't had any issues in two years and, if so, why is he pigeonholed?
Appreciate that Evan but I have severe character issues and a checkered past. Maybe I have a future in New England. Seriously, Smith's rap sheet is extensive (including 2 alcohol-related incidents and an arrest for 3rd-degree assault) but is there a better landing spot for him than in a huddle with Ed Reed and Ray Lewis? No. No there isn't.
Who do you see Jets take at 94?
Kenrick Ellis, DT, Hampton -- 6'5", 350 lbs. Used to be at South Carolina but ran into some issues there. He had 95 tackles last season...an amazing amount for a DT. Solid pick for Rex's Jets.
Cam newton bust, home run, or somewhere in the middle? I think the Panthers made a HUGE mistake
The guy has been a winner everywhere he's been so you have to at least give him a couple years to see what happens. I don't think he's Peyton Manning but I also don't think he's Akili Smith. I'll take a complete shot in the dark and say he'll have a career similar to Mark Brunell in production but not necessarily longevity.
What r ur thoughts on the unc players in the draft?
There's a ton of mystery with all these guys. Quinn clearly has the most upside with Little and Austin close behind. I really like the DBs Williams, Searcy and Burney. Someone will find 3 serious ball players tomorrow with those guys. Don't sleep on QB T.J. Yates as well. Strong arm, under the radar field general who could be a steal late in the 6th or 7th round.
Josh... why did Mia move up for a 2nd rnder to take a RB when they got soooo many other needs?
Because Daniel Thomas could have been a 1st rounder if he didn't have some of the fumbling issues. He's a big strong runner who will immediately take a ton of pressure off Chad Henne. One of my favorite picks of the day.
who did the broncos pick in the 3rd round
NC State LB Nate Irving. A rock up the middle for years to come. My opinion.
Thanks for all the answers you guys rock. To follow the newton question so bad pick at the first pick I don't see too many teams taking a mark burnell with the first overall
100% correct and I totally meant to say that before I got distracted by a shiny object on the ground. Again, the Panthers didn't take Cam because they think he's going to be a Tom Brady, Peyton Manning type QB. They took him because he's a face for a struggling franchise and he'll put butts in the seats. Plus, a guy like that has so much crazy upside you're almost forced to take the gamble on him if you have the top pick. I just happen to think he won't ever live up to the number 1 pick potential. In fact, I think he'd be lucky to have Mark Brunell's career.
watch mallet is the next brady pats got a steal there
This is called "going out on a limb".
Not alot of people know bout johny white. Personly i like him alot. Also Deuta Williams has some talent.
True. Forgot to mention White.
Alright friends...solid chat once again, we're getting kicked out of here and need to sign off. Thanks to D'Arcy, Chris Sprow and all of you for hanging out with us during the 2nd and 3rd round. We'll be back to wrap up the last day of the draft at 12pm ET. See you all then!!
