Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Greetings all. Happy almost weekend. I look forward to this reprieve from a brutal day of computer problems.

Mathieu (Montreal (Quebec))

Do you prefer Mario Williams at OLB in certain subpackages or at full time OLB? Is it possible for him to handle the two positions: being 50-50 DE and OLB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

I prefer him as a 4-3 defensive end. He's one of the best in the world at that. We have no idea how he is as a 3-4 DE or OLB. I do not want to see a 290-pounder asked to do anything moving away from the quarterback.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

Despite the 18-game schedule being off the table for a few years is there any chance that the owners expand the number of roster spots available from 53 to 54 or 55?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

All about what they bargain. If football returns under old rules as a result of a court ruling, no. And in a new agreement, I don't see it as being a big chip for players if there is no increase in games.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

In my opinion, baseball gives too much compensation for losing players via free agency but football seems to give not enough compensation. If all the Carolina Panthers get for losing Julius Peppers is a sandwich pick between the 3rd and 4th round is that really compensation for losing such a huge free agent?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Same for all. You can keep him with a contract, with a tag or you know the price of letting him go. They get the pick AND save a ton of money.

David (Vegas)

So here's the ringer. The Jacksonville Jaguars being a younger team aren't as prepared mentally for a lockout killed season. They wind up placing last and get the 1st pick in the draft. Do they trade out for someones arm and a leg or take Luck and trade Gabbert?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Trade. But they won't be in last.

Chaz (Nashville)

Hey PK, after looking at the list of free agent tight ends that would become available if FA were based on 2010 rules, I would not be surprised if the Titans end up having to make a trade to bolster their depth at the position. What are your thoughts? Would they be okay with Randy McMichael or Desmond Clark?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Someone good enough to be their third will come free.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, assuming we have a 2011 season, do you feel it's likely this could be the season that the Texans break through and make the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

I won't be picking the Texans to make the playoffs until at least the year after they make the playoffs.

Vicente (Arizona)

Which veteran QB do you think the Titans are most likely to sign?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

Collins or Hasselbeck.

diehardtexan (houston)

How much better will the Texans "D" be in 2011 with Wade and the draft class coming in..(not to mention whatever free agents they sign) I think they have the potential to be a dangerous group..

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Why over-expect? They don't need to be dangerous. They need to make the big jump from terrible to decent. Decent paired with that offense should be fine.

Ben (UK)

Ryan Clark over Antoine Bethea? Can't quite comprehend where you're coming from with that. I know it's awfully easy to look back and criticise lists and rankings, but that one is really quite puzzling.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

I can only imagine what you are writing the guys who didn't vote for Bethea at all.

john (florida)

who do you think jacksonville will pick for college and pro free agents

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Ruud if he comes free. Posluszny. Weddle.

Brian (VA)

Paul, do you think Schommer is a suitable replacement for hope if he and the Titans part ways?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

I don't know how, based on what we've seen from him, he rates as better. Bad and experienced is better than bad and overwhelmed.

JRS (Colorado)

Do you think Tim Tebow has a chance to be the next John Elway for the Broncos?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Absolutely not.

Brian (VA)

Was that you I saw in a new Dell commercial?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Absolutely not.And I can't get my new drive until Monday, because they can't pay a few extra bucks to FedEx for Saturday.

Zach (Indiana)

What needs do the Colts still have? what are the chances they fill them with quality players in free agency?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Safety. Deep-threat receiver. Perhaps a guard. Perhaps a defensive tackle. I expect they'll bring in one or two outsiders of note -- not super expensive, but a significant guy or two.

Raj (Los Angeles)

I'm curious how the front office justifies taking someone who completed only 54% of his passes. As far as I know (I've looked everywhere), there has been only one elite QB to have never completed 60% in one college season, and that's Brett Favre. One QB, out of hundreds.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

Each case is different. A high percentage of Top 10 QBs bust. Does that mean never draft a QB high? A high number of bad completion percentage QBs bust. Does that mean never draft one? What if he's the next Favre? As Mike Reinfeldt said, the difference in actual vs. desired completion percentage here is 11 for 20 vs. 12 for 20. Doesn't seem so big put like that. I need to see.

Michael Westin ("The 615")

Paul- would you attend a Titans game if BIG & RICH performed at halftime?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

Not as a fan, no. But I don't attend Titans games as a fan. I am morally opposed to Rich.

Griffin (Goodlettsville)

Do you think the Titans will carry 3 running backs this year Cj, Stafan Johnson, and Jevon Ringer? ::Side note question:: Any possibility on Myron Rolle getting a shot to compete for playing time this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:14 PM)

Yes three backs, no on Johnson being one. Jamie Harper, not Johnson. Rolle has a shot to compete for a roster spot, let's start there.

Nate (Indy)

Made it to Rotier's when I was in Nashville last week. Had a burger at your recommendation. It was decent enough, but hardly the best I've ever had. Hinkle's in Bloomington, IN has that honor. They've been in the same location since before WWII, serving burgers the same way. Check them out if you have a chance. Rotier's atmosphere is fantastic, I'll admit.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:14 PM)

Did you have a milk shake?

irishtexun (Bryan Tx)

With Mario moving to OLB...why waste a pick on Brooks Reed in the second when the Texans are in need of CB and Safeties.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:15 PM)

Reed plays strongside, Williams weakside. With Barwin as only alternative, definitely needed another. Also, no great corner or safety value there to them.

Raj (Los Angeles)

How intelligent does Locker come off? In talking with him, does he seem smart? I'll trust your judgment on this one.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:15 PM)

He's smart. He may not be grade smart. I don't know. He's football smart. He's media smart. He's people smart.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Paul, I am a Jaguars fan left scratching my head about this decision to move Mario Williams to OLB. I will concede, first and foremost, that Wade Phillips has done this before and knows a TON more about football than I probably will ever know. At the same time, I just don?t see why Mario Williams is not an end in the 3-4 front. I fully understand the concept of trying to utilize the most effective pass rusher at that spot, but he just seems too big at 6?7? 290. I suppose he could drop 25-30 lbs., but the way I see it, you would have a nice rotation with Williams, Smith, and Watt with Cody and Mitchell on the nose. I envisioned Reed and Barwin on the ends with Ryans and Cushing on the interior of the backers with Mark Anderson on subs. What am I missing here?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

Don't picture him six yards off the line of scrimmage. Picture him creeping forward constantly, often at the line beside an end at the snap. He'll be that kind of linebacker.

ADAM (Cookeville)

Would you assume the longer the lock out runs the more likely Collins is to return to Tennessee to run some form of the old offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:18 PM)

I wouldn't assume until way later. The Titans are going to run an offense very similar to the old one to start, no matter what. Hasselbeck or another veteran can learn it. It's not rocket science.

Adam L (Nampa, ID)

Paul, I was confused why so many columnists said my Titans needed a boost at defensive tackle so badly. Last time I checked, Jason Jones and Tony Brown are star duo when healthy and we haven't given up on Sen'Derrick Marks have we? Didn't we just trade one defensive tackle and cut another good one last season because we were so loaded at the position? What am I missing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:20 PM)

A star duo? Chief, you need to watch some other teams. Tony Brown is a broken down guy who's probably down to situational now, and while Jones is a great player, he isn't a tackle to some people. Marks has shown nothing. There is a big difference between giving up on him and counting on him. Jovan Haye should be cut. You think they would have been good with those four?

Hair Club for Men (Nashville)

Odds that Jake Locker, Kerry Collins, or some other QB starting for the Titans week 1?ps..Our offer still stands

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:22 PM)

Baldness is not a disease to be cured, and you are manipulative to sell it as if it is. Other: 40 percent, Collins: 35 percent, Locker: 25 percent.

Brian (VA)

In Mayock's 2012 draft he has the Titans taking a corner and in early 2011 mocks they were listed as taking Amukamara. I know they're only mocks but why are they focusing on CB for the Titans? Is nobody sold on McCourty or Verner?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:23 PM)

They've taken corners high. Fisher was a DB. Reinfeldt was a DB.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Paul, which of the Colts draft picks did you like the most, or intrigues you the most?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:23 PM)

I'll take any of the first three.

Chaz (Nashville)

Do you think the Jags will attempt to trade for a better wide receiver for Gabbert to eventually throw to?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:24 PM)

Doubt it. Do think they will explore free agency and that the position will be a priority next year.

David (Virginia)

The Titans have a real shot at the #1 overall pick next year. If they do end up in that slot do they take Luck or do they trade out? It seems difficult, to me at least, to pass on the most "sure-thing" prospect since Peyton Manning.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:25 PM)

Predicting who's 32nd next season is harder than predicting who wins the Super Bowl. It's silly to say who does or doesn't have a real shot.

derek (houston)

Hey PK, if you were Rick Smith, what position would you fill first with a FA? CB or Safety? And who fits that bill?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:26 PM)

I sign Eric Weddle. If I can't, I sign the very steady and reliable Melvin Bullitt.

Raj (Los Angeles)

Are you surprised that the Titans didn't draft any guards? Amano doesn't seem deserving of his contract, and he looks expendable. I feel like you could put in Velasco, and drop off would be minimal.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:26 PM)

I'm not, as I wrote over and over that Munchak thinks the interior three are fine as they are.

Bill Gates (In my invisible plane)

Would you like me to give Dell a call and see if they can expedite this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:27 PM)

Please do.

Jonathan G (Nashville)

Not really a question more of a response for Raj in LA: He completed 11 of 20/54% of his passes, they (the NFL scouts, analyst, etc) are looking for 12 of 20 difference of 1 pass, and from what I've heard they are betting on the intangibles and athleticism of Locker to be able to squeeze that 1 more pass out of him to get the "60%" everyone is talking about.. " Wake up Zone 104.5"

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:27 PM)

Thank you.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

What is your guess as to when there's a new CBA or a decision from a court that will allow us to continue the season? How should fans want things to go down?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:28 PM)

Fans should want the stay pulled back. Then league would have to open for business soon.

Jason (San Francisco)

Why do you hate Griff??? Your scorn for him is approaching VY levels... And since I know Huckali is going to throw a flag for me saying that you let personal dislike color your feelings he may as well throw it now. But Griffin is a pass thief a big play artist. Good enough on the backend of Tennessee's defense. Is he Reed or Polamalu no but look at the interception versus the Cowboys that wasnt tipped but should have been picked by Tully. He hung in there got creamed and came down with the ball. Bethea cannot make that play and frankly isnt asked to. PK as Matt Williamson who I know you trust who is a better or more feared player I am sure he would say #33.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:30 PM)

Antoine Bethea is significantly better at doing what the Colts ask him to do than Michael Griffin is at what the Titans ask him to do. Period. Griffin can't handle criticism and doesn't lead. He needs people around him playing well to follow. Way too inconsistent. Bethea leads and gets people to follow and takes accountability. Not worthy of same conversation.

Kevin (Knoxville)

The Colts drafted RB Carter and DB Rucker and were immediately charged with drafting players with character issues. I thought both were good picks, but is this some sign of a rupture in the Colts universe? I thought the Colts avoided the bad apples. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:31 PM)

The Colts decide for themselves who's a character issue, they don't have outsiders determine it for them.

Raj (Los Angeles)

Little off topic, but do local reporters like you feel restricted by what you can write since you see these players all the time? In other words, are you less inclined to openly criticize players that you see on a daily basis? Just trying to understand the culture of beat writers.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:33 PM)

Well, I am not a beat writer. But beat writers and divisional bloggers like me have to be fair. If you're fair and you're accessible for a guy to complain to about something you write he doesn't like, that's all anyone can ask. (I'm not in the Colts, Texans or Jaguars locker rooms that regularly, unfortunately.) I certainly didn't feel like I couldn't write what I felt about Vince Young for any reason. There is an example.

Steve Jobs (Cupertino, CA)

You should have gotten a Mac!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:34 PM)

I still think of them as children's and artists' computers. I'm an adult and a writer.

Anthony (New Jersey)

What is your opinion on Blaine Gabbert? I am a huge Jags fan.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:35 PM)

I think it was bold of them to go get him. I think he has a lot of qualities you look for in a big-time quarterback and I think he has a chance to be one. I think he's got good coaches in Koetter and Sheppard.

Chaz (Nashville)

Do you enjoy watching NFL football games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:35 PM)

I do. Very much.

Brian (VA)

Could you really see Hasselbeck coming to the Titans? Is he at a point in his career where he's ready to take less money and be the stop gap while mentoring a younger quarterback? I just see someone like Collins being more realistic...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:35 PM)

If he gets more money and more opportunity I am sure he will take it. But who are we sure is giving it to him?

Bill Polian (with son Chris and in educational mode)

Before I ask my questions, I want you to understand that the purpose of the NFL draft is to increase the pool of available players for each of the teams in the NFL. That?s how teams get better. Now that you understand that, do you think that our recent draft will improve the Colts running game? Stats people don?t really understand our running game, I think. You?re a media person. Have you had any more thoughts or impressions in recent days regarding the Colts? draft or draftees? Or my son Chris?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:36 PM)

I think running better in four minute situations and third-and-short, which you admit is something that needs to happen, improves your overall run game. That's what I think.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Considering the amount of money the Jaguars appear to need for free agent signings in order to fill the major defensive holes, would releasing Garrard so to save roughly 8 mil be a reasonable possibility? The question assumes Gabbert shows stellar progress during pre-season but considering it has been noted he needs another year I'm not clear as to whether the smart move would be to release Garrard in any scenario.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:37 PM)

I don't think it's a possibility.

Cameron (San Antonio)

Whats your opinion on Roger Goodell's handling of the lockout? Tough times should bring the best or worst out of a public image leader like Goodell and he seems irrelavant rather than a mediator or problem solver.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:37 PM)

He's been less than I expected, and I was a big fan at the start of all of this.

Jeff Fisher (Mt. Killimanjaro)

PK: If the Titans start Collins on opening day, what is the over/under on fans in the stands? 25,000?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:38 PM)

It will be full. At 1-4 it won't be.

Joe (Iowa)

Your best guess at the Colts starting OL week 1?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:38 PM)

L to R: Castonzo, Johnson, Saturday, Ijalana, Diem.

David (VA)

Does watching football as a neutral observer take anything away from it? I mean I enjoy some games without the Titans in them, but I couldn't imagine watching as many games as you do without a rooting interest. How do you do it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:39 PM)

If I am working, I don't have a lot of time to root. If I am on my couch, I tend to root for people, root for scenarios, root for drama, root for last second finishes.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

In 3 years, who better: Blaine or Jake?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:40 PM)

I don't know. But the odds suggest in three years, one of their teams is starting to talk about finding a quarterback.

JRS (Colorado)

How do you determine which questions to answer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:40 PM)

I pick the ones I have the most to say in response to, generally.

Chaz (Nashville)

Do you enjoy watching NBA basketball games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:40 PM)

Not one bit. I prefer Law & Order SVU repeats.

Curt (NJ)

Would you say the situation for Gabbert in Jacksonville is ideal to develop him and plug him in as the starter after David Garrard is done?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:41 PM)

Ideal is he's with a team loaded with weapons and a top defense. This isn't quite ideal.

Chaz (Nashville)

What observations do you use to make your judgment of someone being or not being a leader? As a fan all I get to see are games on Sunday, it's not always easy to see that dynamic on the field. I think I know what you mean about Griffin but I haven't seen any interviews with him to know exactly how he hates criticism. Can you link anything for this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:42 PM)

Hit my mailbag on this.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

So is Wayne Weaver the overly optimistic one? I have McNair as ineffective and Adams as eccentric.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:42 PM)

Incorrect.

Adam (Cookeville)

Should Titans fans be excited about the prospect of Akeem Ayers starting in a linebacker role? He has been portrayed as a playmaker.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:43 PM)

Huge upgrade. Immediate starter. Changes what they can do.

Ben (UK)

Ryan Diem is due somewhere in the region of $7m next year - if you think he'll be there, is that due to the fact they'll pay him despite his woeful performance last year, or do you think a renegotiation is likely?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:44 PM)

I would think they've got to bring that number down. They won't keep him and play him out of any sort of obligation. But if they planned on chopping him, they probably would have done it prior to lockout, no?

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Favorite MLB team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:44 PM)

Grew up in Central Jersey, a Yankee fan out of geography.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Assuming we have a full training camp this summer, any chance you will be in Jacksonville to see the Del Rio's annual Oklahoma Drill? I'd love to see Will Rackley go up against Knighton, Alualu, or D'Anthony Smith.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:45 PM)

I need to change up my order. Which I think means Houston earlier and Jacksonville later. So probably not. Found it overrated the time I was there for it.

Vicente (AZ)

You don't think the Titans have any interest in going after McNabb?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:45 PM)

Nope.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Starting LBs for the Titans game 1? Does Curran play into the equation at all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:46 PM)

Ayers, Witherspoon, McRath. Curran will have to fight for his spot, they are moving away from guys like him.

Aaron (Orlando)

If the jags can get at least one quality safety in free agency, will that be enough? I feel like the team is relying on rashean to have a bounce back year and cox to take a step forward in year 3. Is this their thinking for this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:47 PM)

Smith told me they wanted to draft one and sign one. So I only expect one. That's likely it for the secondary. Then LBs and a DE perhaps.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What do you think of the Julio jones trade?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:47 PM)

Atlanta gave up way too much. And Jones will drop some balls.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Not giving up on this: I'm convinced I have Adams right. Weaver ineffective and McNair overly optimistic? If so I guess I can see that based on the failures during the Shack era. Heck, 2008 alone probably qualifies him by your options.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:48 PM)

Ding, ding, ding.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Which pick (or more, if you're up to it) left you scratching your head??

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:49 PM)

Based on what I read about Delone Carter as indecisive and not good in pass protection, he didn't sound like a fix for Donald Brown to me.

Rob Voigt (Highland, IN)

Where at in Central Jersey? I'm from Toms River. Had 3 teams to choose from. I'm a Phillies fan, Mets hater, and Yankees don't matter.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:50 PM)

South River. Though family is in Princeton and Jackson now. Wife is from Philly.

JRS (Colorado)

I am a bottom line kind of guy. Bottom line, what current are the 2 best teams and 2 worst teams in the NFL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:51 PM)

Why would I go away from Green Bay and Pittsburgh and Carolina and Buffalo at this stage?

Colts Fan (Indy)

Hey Paul. I'm a big Colts fan and enjoy reading your stuff on them. Who do you see being the starting offensive line this year for Indy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:51 PM)

Scroll down please.

Brian (VA)

Why do you think the Titans passed on Casey Matthews in the draft? Do you think that will make things awkward at the next family reunion?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:52 PM)

The question is, why does everyone think just because they have relatives of his the Titans should have taken him?

Jesse (blacksburg, va)

Which new coordinator inheriting these two horrific defenses improves their defense the most? Phillips or Gray? Philips has got better players on the front end and Gray's got better back end players, i vote phillips

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:53 PM)

Probably Phillips. Gray isn't getting DeMeco Ryans back and he didn't get a first-round pick.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Do you think Indy coveted Solder over Costanzo?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:53 PM)

They had someone roughly even with Castonzo. Not sure who it was.

Brian (Jail)

If there was a full season lockout, what would the draft order be for the 2012 draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:54 PM)

Would have to be negotiated in the new agreement.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

If Wayne Weaver had promoted Gene Smith to GM instead of hiring Shack Harris in 2003, how much different would the Jaguars look right now in your mind?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:56 PM)

Gene Smith is way better than Shack Harris and I think he's on an excellent course. But I don't see where he's the greatest personnel man in history either. I see eight picks out of his first 15 who've done nothing of note so far, and that's not counting D'Anthony Smith.

David (VA)

Where does Reinfeldt rank among AFCS GM's to you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:57 PM)

Probably second, but with Gene Smith at his heels.

Chaz (Nashville)

But a lot of people have said Akeem Ayers is first round talent and is a steal at #39.... that's a quasi-first-round pick

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:57 PM)

He was drafted in the second round. Therefore he's a second round pick. A lot of people say I am not fat. But I am fat.

Jesse (blacksburg, va)

Your favorite pick, fifth round or later, in the division is....

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:59 PM)

Choosing from only nine guys, I believe. I'll go Shiloh Keo. But I hope he plays faster than people expect.

Balloon - One half of the last question guys (The Moon)

I'm not gonna be fancy this week. Hopefully we will have good news on the stay being lifted on Monday. See everyone next week, and hopefully with trades and free agent signings allowed. Thanks for chatting.

Paul Kuharsky
  (5:00 PM)

Take care everybody. Thank you for coming. Have a great weekend. Happy Mother's Day!
