Hey Folks. Let's get this rolling. FYI-BIG NEWS: I am now on Twitter! Follow me at WilliamsonNFL
MDub,I heard the buzz that you joined twitter finally. My question is in regards to Bruce Carter. Do you think he's a good fit in the Boys system and would he complement Sean Lee well?
It is true about Twitter. We will see how that goes. As for Carter-I REALLY like what he brings as a player. But the fit is very curious. Maybe he is just too talented (like a Timmons type) that you just take him and figure out what to do with him once he gets healthy. But I see him as a weak ILB in the 3-4, much like Lee. Don't NEED two of those guys.
What would the colts offensive line look like at the start of the season?
Improved! I would bet that Castanzo is the starting LT on opening day. Although...counting on rookie starters with this CBA situation might not be wise this year. But Castanzo is pro ready and the best LT on this roster without question. I think Iljana is a starting guard-and the eventual replacement for Diem at RT.
Hey Matt, Do you think Michael Vick will be able to do what he did last year, with the expectations so high?
Tend to doubt it. KC Joyner keeps a metric on "Bad Decisions" by QBs. Vick was near the top of his list in this category, but was lucky in that he didn't pay for these bad decisions with INTs. I find that as something difficult to repeat, but then again Vick should have a higher level of comfort in this system. He obviously has a crazy-high ceiling. But I tend to think that he will fall short of what he did last season.
Hi Matt:When you have a glaring weakness (e.g. OLB), don't you have to try to move around in the draft to make certain that you can fill the need especially when you have as much flexibility as the Pats had given their number of picks?
With all of their movment, you would think that would be the case. But they really have not put a premium on this position at all of late. And you certainly can improve your pass D by getting stronger on the backend (Dowling) and then bringing more pressure. And free agency (Lawson) is still looming. But yes, overall, I am with ya.
Thoughts on Packers draft and their roster with this draft class and people returning from the IR.
It is loaded! Totally loaded!
Thoughts on 49ers picks of Smith, CK and Hunter? Think the rest were all reaches/projects?
The CK pick might have been my favorite of the entire draft. Cincy will regret passing on him for Dalton. Kaepernick is going to be a star-and going to a great situation. Love it. Smith is fine, but would have preferred Quinn...but I bet Quinn's medical was the reason for that. Smith is going to get big though. Saw him more of a 4-3 DE fit. But he will get after the QB in the meantime. Hunter pick was excellent too. Great complement/backup to Gore.
Hey Matt,Do you think that the Seahawks are on purpose trying to lose this year in order to get Andrew Luck in next year's draft?
No. Not at all. I think they will be huge players for Kolb. Or if that doesn't work out, settle for Hasselbeck....and then maybe put a package together for a rookie QB (Luck?) a year from now.
Any guesses on who has offered a 2012 first rounder for Kolb?
See it as a two horse race between Sea and Zona.
Matt, What do you think of the Eagles picking Nebraska Kicker Alex Henry?
A lot cheaper than Akers. Can also punt. Still, seems high. And I do think Akers can still get it done.
Do you think Gabe will help solidify an awful Bears O-Line and give Cutler the time he needs? And can they be Super Bowl contenders?
He will help for sure-either at LT or RT. But that OL still needs a lot of help. Needs like two more starters.
Greetings, Matt! Packers not taking an OLB tells me that, outside of Von Miller they felt Walden, Zombo and Jones were better options than anything else available, right?
I can't fault GB for any of their picks, but yes, I think that was their thinking. When they got out of the first two rounds without going OLB, I think they just figured they would stick with what they have. That D wasn't too shabby without a great player opposite Matthews! But..what if Matthews goes down?
If you are the Eagles, who do you think will get you the higher draft pick in 2012, Seattle or Arizona? Also, does Philly go out of their way not to pair Kolb with Fitz and those RBs, or do they only care about the compensation?
Wouldn't worry too much about either. I don't see Zona or Sea being WAY better than the other team-and whoever gets Kolb I think would be the clearly better of the two teams. And can't worry about the opponent. Kolb is a nice looking player, but he isn't Dan Marino or John Elway.
MW, how much time does the Prince see next year? Contrary to popular belief, Ross was good last year, and you know Coughlin hates giving rookies major burn, esp if they can't play specials. For the record I am stoked about the Prince pick.
Won't get a ton of playing time. Not a starter. Will have to work on teams and then get his shot in time. But...considering the status of NYG's LBs, I could see them using a LOT of sets with extra DL or DBs-even on early downs. They did that a lot with 3 Safeties last year. Maybe Prince is that extra guy this season.
your thoughts on Julio to the falcons?
Gave up to much. Just too steep of a price. He fits the ATL O in that he is very physical, loves to run block and of course he is talented. But he isn't a true deep threat (like Green) and he does have some durability issues. Too much to give up.
Does Liuget "fit" on the Chargers?
Not really. Not a true longer built 5T DE. But he is a very good player and will be useful. Might actually be better suited to be a Jay Ratliff-type NT. But DE was the bigger need and I expect him to play there. Again, not a great fit.
Are the Browns better off with the multiple picks from the Jones trade, instead of a #6 type talent?
Well, who would they have selected at #6? I bet it would have been Fairley, Quinn or Jones. All are nice players, but for Clev, I would rather have all those picks.
What do you think of the Texans draft? Did they get enough done to be able to make the transition to Wade's defense? Thanks
They certainly made strong steps to pull it off. I still worry about NT and I think they could use a veteran starter type in the secondary somewhere-they are very young (too young) in the seconday. Also, counting on Barwin might be asking too much. Another OLB type could be in the free agent cards. However...what about making Watt and Smith the DEs and asking Mario to lose 10 lbs and be more of a OLB than DE?
Is John Fox the worst thing that could happen to Tim Tebow (other than being on the Raiders), Fox hates young QB's.
Not exactly the best fit for a puppy QB!
Do you see the Broncos going after an upper-tier FA defensive tackle, or more mid-talented (and priced) options?
It is a massive need of course. But not even sure who those upper tier guys at that position would be.
What music you got rockin' on the iPod? Currently at work and we have some sort of Kenny G Infusion going on.....
Have my playlist on random now. Phish as we speak. Fee
Do you think any team drafted a player with the intent of trading him for a veteran once free agency starts?
Patrick Peterson perhaps? Seems unlikely though. Maybe Mallett?
Now that the Bears aren't overpaying Tommie Harris, do you see them getting a WR or O-lineman in free agency?
I would worry more about OL than WR, but both could be options. Need to give Cutler time. A live version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" now. Mick is just sick. Sick I tell ya. Gotta love the Stones.
In 3 years, the best QB from the 2011 draft will probably be...
Gabbert or Kaepernick
What do you think of Fairley to the Lions?
Just too good to pass up. I am sure they didn't think that was an option during their prep meetings. But I do think Schwartz will line Suh and Fairley up at DE quite a bit. He did that some with Suh last year and pretty often with Haynesworth in Tenn.
How could the Redskins trade down with both Gabbert and Quinn on the board? I could not have been more angry.
I can feel your pain there. I respected that they actually had respect for draft picks this year and valued mid round picks. But man, passing on those guys is rough. Can't condone it.
What Vet QB do the Fins target once FA begins?
Not sure if he is going anywhere, but I see that as a great new home for C Palmer.
It seems the Broncos are going with Tebow. Should they trade Orton?
They should strongly entertain offers. Fox loves vets. And I am FAR from sold on Tebow. I would want strong value in return for Orton.
MW, great time on the ESPN draft chat...was a whole lot of fun, especially after the NFL draft crashed twitter a few times. Fans scream for their team to draft BPA, then cry when they do it. Which teams had the best "BPA" drafts this year? I really like Arizona, Det, NO, and Indy.
Thank you. The Cover it Live chat was big time. I like all those drafts and Zona and Det certainly stand out as "BPA" types for sure. Felt like Indy had a GREAT draft, but it was very needs driven.
Why are the Bengals engaging in this weird stand-off with Carson Palmer? Jeez, just trade the guy already!
They can't really do that right now though Nathan.
Which FA CB can help the 49ers this year, Asmo is out of their price range, maybe Cromartie?
Cro doesn't seem like a great fit to me. Just not physical enough-doesn't like to tackle. I see Cro being in his best situation with NYJ. J Joseph? Wilson?
Where will Reggie Bush land?
He is another guy that is on the perfect team for both the team and the player. I know all about Ingram, but they are very different. Bush is just as much WR as he is RB. I hope both the Saints and he realize that this is as good as it gets.
Thought on Ryan Williams' role with the Cardinals? I was hoping he would go to a team where he could be showcased, not mired in a 3-back system..
I would expect Hightower's role to fall off massively. But it sure does seem like a true 2 RB system.
Asmo + Huff = deadly cowboys defense
....and an awful lot of $$$. I would bet that Huff ends up in Dallas. No inside scoop here, but a real good fit. FS is a HUGE hole right now.
It looks like several WR's are available in FA/ or from a trade; Owens, Ochocinco, Steve Smith. Would it make sense for the Rams to pursue any of them? Thanks.
Just talked to Sando this morning about the Rams WR situation. I really thought they needed to add quality rather than quantity...which is exactly what they did not do in the draft. Doesn't make much sense to me. How many WRs are they going to have on their roster? 7 or 8? But of that crew, Smith is the only one I would consider putting with a 2nd year QB.
More like Cullen Jenkins + Huff/Weddle in Big D. Which fits better Weddle or Huff?
I think Weddle is the superior player-more consistent year to year. But I like both a lot. I also think Weddle will cost more. Huff went to U of Texas-just seems like a Cowboys type move.
If Jim Tressel does the right thing and resign, how much interest from the NFL?
Hmmm....I doubt a ton. Such a tremendous recruiter. That seems like his #1 strength to me.
Thought on Mia draft?
Very solid. Putting pieces around Henne (or maybe a vet TBD) to be succesful. Even the Gates pick-exactly what they needed to open up room for everyone else.
Reggie Bush to the Colt,a guy can dream.
Wow. That would be nuts. Colts don't do such things, but yeah, I guess a guy can dream.
Toughts on the Bucs D-Line potential. Lots of youth and lots of ?????
McCoy was much better than he was given credit for as a rook. He is going to be great and will be the key for the entire group. Not a huge Clayborn guy here, but I see a solid DE there. It being good vs. great all depends on Bowers.
Do you think "Angie" was our best song?
Paint it Black or Sympathy for the Devil. Well, mabye Start Me Up or You Can't Always Get What You Want. OR....
Eagles fan here. Passed on Earl Thomas last year and take a 27 yr old rookie over Jimmy Smith this yr, ugh. Tell me some good news
Here is the good news: Your team will be a player for Nnamdi. And: You will LOVE Watkins. Guy is a killer and exactly what that OL needs. Starting RG Day One and maybe RT in a pinch.
Hey Matt, sounds like the chargers wanna start either 2010 third round pick Donald butler or 2011 second round pick Jonas mouton at ILB this yr who do you like better at that position
Too early to say. They will resign one or two of their free agent ILBs too. Butler is a much different player than Mouton too. Mouton has to be on the weak side and will be their nickel LB. I also think SD's dreadful special teams play had a lot to do with that selection-and Gilchrest as well.
Who will be better McCoy or Suh?
Suh. Just more power. He already is better. And it is somewhat unfair to McCoy to have to deal with that comparison for his entire career. But I think McCoy will be great too.
A Stones list without Satisfaction? Matt you are slipping>
Crossed my mind of course. And it is a tremendous song. But put those ones ahead of it. Same with Its Only Rock and Roll
MW, Ive discovered Bellichek's draft strategy: by 2020, the Patriots will have all 32 first round picks.
...and they will trade 30 of them
Dont you think Andy Reid's system (QB friendly) hides some of his QBs deficiencies? That by itself should scare teams off of Kolb.
Of course it does. That is good coaching. That is what coaches get paid for.
Tumbling Dice, Miss You, and the list goes on. . . .
Burning Bush...you are feelin' me
Cam Newton in two years....your thoughts?
Hi Matt, wanted your thoughts on something. Next year's qb class looks deep. Is it possible that the teams that passed on QB's did so realizing that they could get a higher rated player and add a better QB to a stronger team next year? Also what do you think about next years QB class?
Outside of Luck, I really don't know enough about it to really comment. I just think this year that some teams felt they would rather go the vet route or decided not to take a QB WAY too high. Can understand that.
Matt, any chance that KC repeats and wins the division this year? scary strong offense, solid D? Think they can handle the tougher schedule?
They are really growing on me and this draft was quite impressive. A few weeks ago, I thought they would be a better team in 2011 than in 2010, but their record would not reflect it due to the schedule. Rethinking that.
Gimme Shelter...hands down their best song.
"Its just a kiss away...kiss away...kiss away"
Whose Cam will be the better pro--Carolina's (Newton) or Pittsburgh's (Heyward)?
Pittsburgh's...and wow, they couldn't be much different.
What are thoughts about the Titan's defense? I think they added a couple of nice pieces.
I do too, but I still think their Pass D is a big liability. Maybe getting Morgan back will help the pass rush. But they could lose Babin. Overrated secondary.
Is it me, or did Carolina make a huge mistake with their #1 pick?
It's not you
What were your thouhgts on the Steelers draft?
B. It is always a B. Next year will be a B. Five years from now will be a B. That is wonderful. They have a great feel for what exactly they need-and they get it. They have a plan and the smarts to execute it. And they usually pick at the end of every round...which says it all.
AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" now...this song really pumps me up. Almost as much as "For Those About To Rock"...Thunder! Thunder!
I enjoyed watching some of the Lions games last year. With a healthy Stafford (big if) do you think they could compete for a playoff spot? Or will their secondary hold them back?
This is another team that isn't done, so it is too early to say. But fun? They will be ALL SORTS of fun! And I really like Stafford. Nnamdi to Det? Oh baby!
Can Mason Foster develop into a 3 down linebacker in the NFL?
Seems like a reach, as does his ability to handle the deep middle in the Tampa 2. But I like the player and he will add more physicality and toughness than Ruud, who is prob gone.
Monkey Man and Can't You Hear Me Knocking are my faves right now. Matt, Vikes 1st and 2nd round picks: discuss... I don't like that the OL got ignored, but at least Ponder can move. Ijalana would have been nice instead of Rudolph IMO.
2 tremendous calls on Stones tunes. Wow-such a list. If you were listening to the Football Today podcast, I have been saying Ponder to Minny is exactly what I would have done if I were the Vikes all along. Great fit. Love it. As for Rudolf, I understand. Great value. Play a lot of 2 TE sets. A rookie QB's best buddy. And a very solid 2 way TE. But their OL does stink and Ijalana would have been a better pick. But...I do understand. Ignore the OL for one min and on 1st and 10, Minny might trot out: Ponder, Peterson, Rudolf, Schianco, Harvin and Rice (if resigned, which they absolutely have to do)...that is a STRONG group.
what do you think about the packers TEs? Can mccarthy put together a 5 tight end package?
Guess they couldn't find a trade partner. HAD to have wanted to move down a few spots-esp with Carimi still on the board.
Without really addressing CB in the draft is Philly announcing to the league they're going after Nnamdi and is that an attractive landing spot for him?
Do you think Von Miller was a worthy pick over Dareus? What do you think of the Bronco's draft overall?
I would have taken Dareus. Trust me, I understand the allure to Miller. Pass rushing is super important. But with KC and Oak in the division, the run D must have been a bigger priority. I don't want to see Miller in coverage on early downs.
Okay Folks, that is a wrap. As usual, you are expected to download the Football Today podcast. But...not as usual, now you are also expected to follow me on Twitter at WilliamsonNFL. Yup, that is right. Took the leap about midnight last night and have gained 2K followers in the first 12 hours. Insane. Take care!
