Welcome to a special Tuesday edition of my chat. Just got back from KHI in Kernersville, N.C. where I was working on a DeLana Harvick story. Lots going on. Did you like the Denny Hamlin golf column? Fire away.
Which pocono race will the go canda team be at?
Pretty sure the second, but would have to check.
When do you think that we will see Danica Patrick race in the Brickyard 400?
Pretty sure 2012.
Let's just say that JGR dropps Logano, does anyone really have interest in him? Could you see him going to a 2nd tier team if that happened? (maybe Red Bull or MWR).
They won't drop him. Too much invested. But what if they sent Home Depot to say, Carl Edwards, and paired Joey with another sponsor? Might make sense if that would give Cuz Carl enough money to lure him from Roush Fenway.
Hi Newt, watching Rowdy's masterful win Sat. night at Richmond do you get the sense that we are all in the presence of greatness and that we are watching Rowdy make history?
He's already made history to a degree becoming the first driver to sweep three races in a weekend. But I did pick him as the most likely to end Jimmie's run before the season and he's not disappointed so far.
Hi David, Zippy was extremely angry at the driver of the #48 for wrecking out Joey at Richmond. Do you expect Joey to return the favor at Darlington or wait until the All Star race?
Joey doesn't really need to get into a spitting match with Johnson, so no.
Do you think that Ryan Newman will re-sign with Stewart & Haas Racing for 2012 or do you think that Danica Patrick will replace Newman?
Good question. I believe Stewart-Haas is a strong possibility for Patrick. Whether that hingest on Newman resigning I can't say for sure. It'll all hinge on sponsorsship I suppose.
Who do you put the blame on Juan Pablo Montoya or Ryan Newman?
Well, Newman did wreck Juan first. Those two have had bad blood since Juan's first race at Homestead a few years ago. Neither will win a title or challenge until they learn to get out of each other's way.
Why are so many people outraged at jpm taking out the 39? On purpose or not the 39 got into jpm 2 races in a row, i knew it was coming and now it should be over.
Took the words out of my mouth.
do you think montoya should have been parked? i personally do not. its a short track saturday night. hot tempers! its what i miss from the augest bristol race
Nope. NASCAR said let the drivers self police. Juan self policed.
Wat is wrong with Denny Hamlin & Kasey Kahne ?
Denny finished second at Richmond so I believe he's getting his mojo back. Kasey is doing what Kasey has done for several years, so hard to ask what is wrong with him. His judgment day will come next year at Hendrick.
Is JGR losing patience with Logano? He is in the same meetings with Kyle and Denny and should learn all of the same "secrets," but he consistently underperforms. If a better option appears for next season (say Carl Edwards), will we see a new driver for the 20?
To be fair, Joey has had fast cars sidelined by misfortune several times this season. And he's still a kid. If you remember, Kyle Busch didn't stop winning races in bunches in Cup right off the bat. Be patient.
How likely is it that Rowdy wins Darlington, Dover and Charlotte?
He's good at all three, but I'd say unlikely to win all three. Hasn't been a driver that has won four in a row in a long time. Think Jimmie won three in a row a few years ago. It's tough to do.
Sure Kurt has the big contract until 2014 but it seems like Kurt is wasting his best racing years in uncompetitive cars at Penske with non-performing crew chiefs and teammates. What do Kurt and Roger need to do to turn around that #22 team?
First, it was only a year ago that Steve Addington was being praises as Busch's crew chief. I don't have the answer on what needs to happen, but when you consider teammate Brad Keselowski is like 28th in points with the same equipment what Kurt has done is amazing.
Will there be any Penalties such as Suspensions,Probations,or loss of Points for altercations in the Sprint Cup race at Richmond?
NEWTON, DO YOU THINK WITH STEWART SAYING HIS STUFF SUCKS AND HE"S EMBARASSED THAT THEY WILL BE MAKING A CREW CHIEF SWAP ESPECIALLY WITH THE WAY NEWMAN EMBARASSED SHR AT RICHMOND?
If there is, I hope Stewart lets his general manaager make the call. Tough for the driver/owner to make a switch like that because emotions play a big role. I'd say Stewart will be patient. He really likes Darian Grubb and Grubb is great working with the Hendrick people.
what is your favorite moments from darlington from the last ten years? (2001-2010)
That's easy. The closest finish in NASCAR history between Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch in 2003. by .002 seconds I believe.
That final restart where Rowdy and Denny had the #88 sandwiched and just blew him away was just amazing. What makes Rowdy the best restarter and how can he pass so easily on the outside?
He has no fear and is willing to take chances few are. Others simply aren't willing to take the risk of piling up the field.
Do you expect to see another Rowdy-Denny show Sat. night at Darlington?
Could be. Denny has the best average finish of any driver at Darlington and he's the defending champ. Kyle is pretty good there, too.
Why do you think Jimmie was whining about #43 when he dumped Joey and Zippy wanted to knock his block off?
Jimmie was whining about his car all night long. As for the specific incident, I haven't asked him. He's having a press conference at Quail Hollow Country Club at 230 but I'm here with you. If I hear anything I'll let you know.
100% agree with what Hinton said about Newman on NASCAR Now yesterday. Questions: Is Newman the new, most hated bad guy? Since all the drivers have warned Newman that they won't take his guff how come he acts surprised when they race him the same way he races them?
Missed Hinton's comment. I will tell you from my own experience drivers believe Newman crowds them more than arguably any other driver.
Hi David, it was reported that Junior was upset and let the track without talking to the media. Rowdy just turned 26 and Dale will be 37 in a few months. Why was Junior upset? Does Dale really believe that he can run with a stud like Rowdy who is just now entering his racing prime?
You know, Junior has a good track record for talking with the media after races, good and bad. If he left once without I can't hold it against him. I wasn't there so I can't say whether he left because he didn't want to talk, had to go to the bathroom or what.
David, any news on the Edwards front, UPS, and RPM's quest for a third team next year?
Nothing new. Will see what I can find out at Darlington.
David, i'm curious, when I look at the paper and see the race results and it shows how much money a driver made for the race, does the driver get 100 percent of that money or does some of that goes back into the race team.
Nope. Most get anywhere from 35 to 45 percent of the take home. Race teams couldn't survive if the driver got it all.
In Kyle-Dave, do you think we are witnessing the next Jimmie-Chad, a driver-crewchief combo that will dominant Sprint Cup for years and years?
Will let you know in two or three years. Way too early.
Hi David, I know you don't want to be critical of another media member but we have heard Kenny Wallace say, "re-putting on a steering wheel" and "they're working more harder". If Ken can't speak English why doesn't he get some education or why doesn't the network get him off the air"?
Sorry, don't comment on commentators.
Is Penske's equipment really that bad or is this just Kurt Busch acting like a spoiled brat once again? How long does RP (and the rest of the team) put up with this from his driver? I can't even imagine what it was like in the Busch household when those two were younger.
Kurt's always been harsh on the radio, even when things are great. Seriously, he's had a few off runs but he's still decent in points. A lot of temas would kill to be where he is.
I see lots of people complaining about cookie cutter tracks and that they want 10 more Richmonds so if they got what they wanted wouldn't Richmond then be a cookie cutter and wouldn't Rowdy Busch be winning more than he already is doing?
Good point. And was Saturday night's race really all that exciting. Seemed Kyle dominated.
Hey David, will Montoya ever change and stop thinking everybody is wrecking him on purpose?
As long as the guy wrecking him is Newman, no, he'll be the same.
Who is the most overated driver and who is the most underated driver in nascar right now?
I like Regan Smith as underrated. Hard to say on overrated. Seems it changes from season to season, sometimes month to month. Some might say Kahne. Others might say Dale Earnhardt Jr. Others might say Vickers. It's all subjective.
Same question different week. Who is your top 5 For saturday night, and did anyone speak to junior after richmond?
Don't think Junior spoke. As for top 5, Hamlin, Burton, Gordon, Kyle Busch and Kahne.
Thank you for not writing about Kyle Busch again.
Thank you for the comment.
What do you think about Kurt's live verbal abuse to his crew guys Saturday night? Has the team given up on him yet and if not how can you not when your driver is a jerk. God bless Addington for having to put up with both of those Busch brother idiots in his career.
You're right, Addington has to have thick skin. As for Kurt, I've heard him explode several times this year. Not sure one is much worse than the other.
DW said during the race that its funny the 24 and 5 are running together and the 48,88 are running together with the same handling issue and said makes you wonder whats going on at HMS. Its ok to say it now because Jr is running better but last year it would've been its Jr he can't drive HMS needs to look at Rousch and RCR and build all cars under the same roof and put all 4 in 1 shop use the other building to store the finished cars
Let me see. Johnson is second in points, Junior is fourth, Martin 13th and Gordon 16th but with a win. Roush has Edwards in first, Kenseth in ninth Biffle 14th and Ragan 19th, RCR Harvick 5th, Bowyer seventh, Menard 15th and Burton 20th. Not sure you can argue one system is better than the other.
Did Burton's and Jr's CC's just not think they could go 104 laps on fuel or were they sure there would be another caution? Jr was top 7 or 8 if he just plays it safe and Burton was probably top 12 or so. Why risk it when they both need the points and confidence?
I suspect neither thought the risk was greater than the reward.
Good Afternoon,How do you think Kasey Kahne will run this week. Can he make the chase
If it was a Truck race I'd pick him to win. As for Cup, he's in my top 5.
In regards to the Cup guys running over the Nationwide series, what is to stop people from buying tickets to the Cup race if they can see the same guys racing on Saturday? For myself, I quit watching the majority of the Nationwide races because I don't want to see Carl, Kyle, etc win everything, its not entertaining to see that. I would much rather see them win in the Cup series, and let the Nationwide guys race for legitimate wins and championships, what do you think?
I agree. There was a day when Cup guys didn't dominate the Nationwide Series and people still attended.
Any word on what Bayne is suffering from now that a bug bite has been ruled out?
There are lots of rumors but we're nothing substantiated. Just keep your thoughts and prayers with him.
What do you make of all of the problems at MWR? Seems truex wants out
And where exactly would he go? He got out at DEI thinking he was in a better situation. Wonder how he'd like to have the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing equipment?
Do you think the Truex Jr and Tryson experiment has failed at MWR or is Truex just a journeymen driver?
Tough to say. Has anything really worked well at MWR this year?
Do you really think Newman wrecked Juan? Looked to me like JPM thought he was clear, but wasn't.
Newman does have a rep for racing people closer than he should.
I'm mad mommy is resticting my computer time.
Glad you chose to spend it with us.
whos the top 5 for the weekend? Whats your thoughts on the 48 having it bad most of the day then coming back to a 8th finish??
Typical for the 48. Check out my top 5 below. It hasn't changed.
Do you think Rowdy should retire so young studs like Brad, Bayne and algier could get better rides.
Funny. Maybe Johnson should retire too so somebody else can win the title.
Good afternoon David. I enjoyed the Hamlin article and feel better about his chance to make the Chase this season. How do you think he will do this weekend at my favorite track and event??????
Love Darlington myself. Of course, I was born there. And thanks on Hamlin. I believe he'll challenge for the win.
Why is it that writers claim one week that shrub did good because he didn't race in the minors. The next week he did good because he raced in the minors.
Never claimed he did good because he didn't race in Nationwide, so hard for me to speak.
What is the difference of what happened between Newman and Montoya this weekend and Leffler and Buescher last year? if you remember, Leffler was parked after the retalitation and it was "boys have at it" back then as well. It would be nice if Nascar was consitant with the rules.
Don't recall the Leffler incident, but I do believe NASCAR is more lenient in the Cup series.
David is there any word on when Denny Hamlin's contract ends with Joe Gibbs racing. Also is there anyway he would race for anyone else? The only other team I could see him with would maybe be Stewart-Haas. It seems like he has a great relationship with Tony. Final question, do you think the Gibbs engine issues are solved, if not I think I think you will see it in the 500 miler this weekend. Thank you for your time, and the great nascar coverage.
He's got a few more years, so I wouldn't hold my breath on SHR regardless of the relationship. As for engine issues, too early. Let's wait till after Charlotte and Pocono when they'll really be tested.
David, nice article about Denny and the Pro-Am. Interesting to see the comparisons you make and the competitive nature of Denny. Assuming that Carl Edwards does not go to Red Bull (they would want him...not sure he would want them), who do you see as the most likely candidate for that ride and will BV be back with them next year
Thanks. And Carl is not going ot Red Bull, or at least has not given any indication he's interested in that organization. Not sure who Red Bull will put into Kahne's seat. Vickers' situation is interesting. Red Bull doesn't need to be looking for two drivers and I can't imagine a lot of options better than Red Bull for Vickers. It would be best for that situation if Vickers upped his game so there wouldn't have to be a decision.
that was so a fake Ray Gordon! Ray Gordon only asks questions about who will win the race and only puts a zip code in as his location!
Thanks. How do I know you are real?
Why is The 18 so much better at restarts than others?
As I said earlier, he has no fear.
Do you ever see nascar doing away with the top 35 rule.Fastest 43,if not see you next week
Maybe one day, but officials seem to like the way it is working. I don't have a real problem with it.
Do you think Danica will race Nationwide Series full time next year & race couple of Sprint Cup races in 2012?
If she comes to Cup as most suspect I would suspect she runs at least a partial Nationwide deal. She still needs seat time. I believe Juan made a mistake early in his career when he got away from NW that first year.
Would you be surprised if Denny came back to win the championship this year?
Not really. He's pretty good. I'd be more surprised if Johnson wasn't there at the end.
I don't know about anyone else here but honestly JPM should leave he either wrecks you or himself and stinks on ovals. he might be a good driver as a road course ringer but not a regular.
Totally disagreee. You need to study his numbers a bit more. Stinks is pretty strong.
blah blah rowdy blah blah change name and post another comment blah blah rowdy. rinse and repeat.
Get used to it.
Darlington is a great place to see a race. Watching them dive down the hill in person is incredible. Who do you think wins and how will Little E perform?
Like Hamlin a lot here. His 6.6 average finish there is the best in the sport. I don't see Earnhardt racing for the win or leading a lot of laps, if any. A top 10 would be solid there for him.
All have to quit putting all the blame on Newman.Juan always talks respect, but does not give it out.
Didn't put all the blame on Newman. Just said who got into the other first. I actually believe both are at fault. They've gone after each other since JPM came into the sport. They need to back off and give each other room.
What was JJ having problems with his car? i was at work watching the race and couldnt hear the chatter?
It just never handled the way he wanted it to. It happens from time to time with that team.
Is Ragan saving his job? And if he left and Carl stayed would Bayne or Stenhouse replace Ragan?
He's trying his best. As for a replacement should he go, not sure what Bayne's future is until doctors diagnose his problems.
Do you realize 50% of these questions so far are from the same person? 2:22pm
Trying to mix and match. Free country as well.
These trolls are just bashing Kurt because his name is Busch. What about Truex Jr. firing his pit crew live on the radio?
The firing was quite entertaining. Wonder if they ever got the message?
someone needs to tell Leslie Ann that the media needs exdrivers like kenny because there is to many educated idiots that can't tell the difference from the front of the car from the rear
Who are you calling an idiot?
Im still skeptical how he can just dart ahead like lightning on restart with some sort of help i dunno seems fishy.
No, he has no super booster he fires on every restart.
ive been to richmond 10 or so times, and martinsville 5 or so, and was at each race this year. they were both the best races ive seen all year, action wise. especially at RIR, while the 18 ran away with it, there was 3 wide somewhere in the field 80% of the time, and the 15 or so laps after the restarts were nuts! 4 wide at times. can only complain about the winner, but the racing was awesome!
Good point. And those are two dynamite tracks.
has nascar talk about getting rid of the bumpstops yet the nationwide cars don't use them or is that one of the changes coming in 2013
If there's a change I suspect it won't be until 2013.
Gordon and Gus have had all kinds of problems finding speed at the intermediate tracks so far this season. Do you think this will affect the team's performance Saturday night at Darlington?
Gordon spent some of the off week testing to improve on the intermediate tracks. He acknowledges it is a problem. Alan is pretty smart as a crew chief and Gordon is more than good as a driver, so I would bet they figure it out. Darlington will be a good test since it's one of Gordon's best tracks.
Dave,Is it just me or is Montoya one of those guys who can dish it out but can't take it?
Most competitors are better at dishing it than taking it, but I wouldn't say Juan can't take it. Just certain drivers don't mix. Juan and Ryan seem to be two of them.
Hey David, As we approach the 2nd quarter of the season, have you heard of any potential crew chief changes in the Cup series?????
There were rumors a few weeks ago but none happened. I suspect if any are coming they'd be at MWR.
I see that Brad, Boyer and Kayne are all running the Nationwide race Fri. night. Why do these experienced cup drivers keep doing this?
They like to race, they're at the track and their owners put together a deal with them and a sponsor. They're not trying to ruin the series or anything.
This troll crap is out of control, he is even using others screen names.....Good article on Denny Hamlin today. Who do you think would win a round of golf between him and Dale Jarrett?
Dale Jarrett. He could play on the Senior Tour if he put his mind to it.
I agree Ryan pushes the limits but in this case it did look like JPM wasn't clear
Will take another look at it after the chat.
Now that Junior is racing like he's expected to, finishing 19th and getting lapped 2 times, do you think all this "Dale's back" silly talk will die down?
Only if he follows it with several bad finishes. And a lot of drivers were lapped at Richmond.
why do you think Brad Keselowskis Nationwide program has been so "off" this year?
Not sure. He's not running for a title so maybe the motivation and financial commitment isn't as strong. I don't have a real good answer. He should be focused totally on Cup.
I would really love to know what Hamlin shared with Busch about Richmond...
He said stop eating M&Ms before the race. Weighs you down. Kidding. Bet it had to do with the line to drive.
had to laugh at question of nascar being consistant on rules.then what would we talk about
David, what is the idea with Matt Kenesth always getting into Jeff Gordon? He ruined a perfectly good evening for the 24. If I was Jeff I'd do the bump and run on Saturday night in Darlington. Your Thoughts??
You don't bump and run at Darlington without causing a mess. Much better and safer places to do it.
Once again the 88 went from crap early to a contender late (fuel strategy messed it up but to go from a 28th place car to a top ten car is still impressive...I think I believe he is back more after last weeks mediocre finish than at any other time this year....
Getting the most out of an average car is the best way to judge how a driver is doing sometimes.
Do you think this season is shaping up like another 2008 for Junior where be barely squeaks into the chase and finishes dead last?
He's looking better prepared for the long haul this season.
That's it for me folks. Thanks for all the questions. Feel free to ask more on twitter at @Dnewtonespn.
