What's up everyone?! We're LIVE from the Draft and will be taking your questions/comments until Mr. Irrelevant is selected later this evening. Let's go!
Do you think the arizona should have drafted a QB in the 1st round?
Hard to say since they got arguably the best player in the draft in Patrick Peterson. Maybe they have something up their sleeve once the offseason officially begins. Kolb? McNabb??
With Jon beason back at regular position MLB, an Thomas davis back can the panther contend in the NFC south a little better now with Cam on and 2 D tackles?
In my opinion, no...not this coming year. Cam Newton is a project who is going to take a year at least to get acclimated to the league. In a divison with the Saints, Falcons and the up and coming Bucs...I think the Panthers are still on the outside looking in next year.
Who are suprises to u that slipped in and out of the rounds?
2 guys who went in the 3rd round, Georgia LB Justin Houston and Illinois LB Martez Wilson. I thought Houston could have come off the board in the mid-1st round before the recent drug allegations surfaced. Wilson was a top-5 prospect coming out of high school who had an up and down career at Illinois but projects as probably the top inside linebacker in this 2011 class.
Why would the cowboys draft a rb
Good question. We know Jerry always likes to make a splash and drafting someone with DeMarco Murray's athleticism certainly accomplishes that. I'm just guessing here, but I think Marion Barber's run in Big D has come to an end. Murray has a number of injury concerns but he gives Dallas an added weapon on offense to compliment Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Aggressive pick.
Are there any decent DTs left for Denver to fill a HUGE need.
Christian Ballard from Iowa is probably the best available. I also like Jerell Powe from Ole Miss.
Although I don't hate Miami's pickup of Daniel Thomas, I can't help but think he would have been available at pick 79. Am I right?
Maybe not. There were a lot of teams who needed a RB in between those 2 picks (GB, BUF, CIN, etc.) and the Cowboys drafted DeMarco Murray 71st. Thomas is a solid prospect and Miami obviously thought highly enough of him to make that move.
are there any possible pass rush prospects left for the patriots, or is it too late in the draft for this year?
Bruce Miller from UCF seems to me like a perfect fit for the Patriots. He was a DE in college but can probably transition to that rush outside LB. He plays with a high motor and reminds me of some guy named Bruschi.
What's the possibility of teams, like the cardinals and the eagles, having an agreement to swap players when player trades are allowed? Like swapping kolb and p peterson? That may explain why arizona hasn't drafted a QB
We've been getting a ton of questions about Arizona trading Peterson to the Eagles for Kevin Kolb. Listen to me...it is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Maybe Kolb ends up in Arizona down the line, but it won't be for Peterson.
Any thoughts on where Noel Devine might land?
I think he'd be lucky to be drafted. Very undersized for an NFL RB (5'7", 179 lbs). Had a down year production-wise at WVU and probably projects better as an undrafted free agent.
Any good QB prospects for the Bills? Or are they going to stick with this defense minded draft, like the last 3 picks?
Don't sleep on Greg McElroy. Ricky Stanzi still available as well. If the Bills decide to go that route, either of those guys would be a good fit.
whats your feelings on the lions draft?
I'm a big fan. Still think they need to address the secondary and offensive line. But Fairley, Titus Young and Mikel LeShoure are all impact players who had very productive college careers and should find plenty of playing time in Detroit.
Do you think Tim Tebow is the real thing or should Denver try to nab a QB in these later rounds?
The jury is still out on Tebow. I don't know if he'll be the answer at QB in Denver or not but I do know that if you trade up into the 1st round to draft a guy, you have to invest the time to develop him and see him grow. I'll guess Tebow gets the keys to the Broncos offense full time next year and gets a pretty sizable leash.
What are the best CB's and change of pace RB's left in the draft?
RBs: Kendall Hunter, Jordan Todman, Dion Lewis and Jacquizz Rodgers are all undersized, change of pace backs who should find homes today. CBs: Brandon Burton, Kendric Burney and Chimdi Chekwa are the best of the remaining corners.
Do you think Edmond Gates will be drafted?
Yes, I do. Dude had one of the fastest 40 times at the Combine (4.31) -- Speed like that has a home somewhere in the NFL.
What are the chances the cowboys taking the de out of texas. I think the kids name is acho
Not good. Sam Acho was drafted by the Cardinals with the 6th pick in the 4th round. The Cowboys just drafted Missouri State OG David Arkin.
Do you think down the road Mallett will be a starter after Brady is done, or do you feel like he will be traded before that happens?
My opinion, he'll be traded. I look at the Patriots drafting Mallett as Bill Belichick doing a favor for the rest of the NFL. Like, here...draft this guy, get him under control, let him learn the ropes from Tom Brady and THEN you can trade him to another team when he's ready to be a starting NFL QB.
josh,as a fellow cowboys fan do you have any insight on who they might have their eyes on in free agency?
Hopefully Asomugha. Sorry, I'm still upset over their last pick. Anyone ever heard of David Arkin from Missouri State? Care to clue me in??
Of the teams that were on the outside of the playoffs last year which have made upgrades to get them to the post season
I'll go with Denver. They're young on offense with Tebow, Moreno, Clady and Demaryius Thomas. And they drafted 4 playmakers on defense in Von Miller, Rahim Moore, Nate Irving and Quinton Carter. Love what Denver is doing.
Why hasn't Dallas drafted a defensive back yet?
Because they NEVER draft what they need. That's my answer. I'm bitter.
Josh, what do you think, Stanzi to the Dolphins?
Yeah, maybe. But again, from the looks of their earlier picks (C Pouncey, RB Thomas) it looks like Miami is set on building around Henne. But Stanzi in the 4th or 5th round doesn't necessarily mean they're drafting him to replace Chad.
Are there any immediate impact players left on the board
Kendall Hunter just went to the 49ers. I love that pick. Great change of pace back from Frank Gore. Like what the 49ers have done so far.
What do you think of mark herzlich?
I think he's an amazing story of courage and determination. From a football point of view, he had a disappointing 40 time at the Combine but could provide good value for someone in the 5th or 6th round.
Where will Casey Matthews end up?
When is Casey Matthews projected to go! I know he is just like his brother and dad!
One name I haven't heard as of late is Casey Matthews, ILB Oregon. Where might he be projected to go?
Lots of Casey Matthews questions...and he was just drafted by the Eagles with the 116th pick overall.
Will the giants be able to get an upgrade at middle linebacker with who is left in the draft?
Greg Jones from Michigan State was one of the most productive ILB's the past 3 years in college football and would provide an immediate upgrade for the G-men. My opinion.
What is up with brandon burton still being on the board?
Good question. Somebody should probably let the Cowboys know. Sorry, I'll stop.
Do you think the browns have done enough to help mccoy
Nope. Greg Little and Jordan Cameron are decent prospects but they're not starters next year by any stretch. I'd look for one of those undersized RBs (Todman, Quizz, Lewis) to go to Cleveland and provide McCoy with a pass catcher out of the backfield.
What do you think about the ravens picks. A true raven fan would like to know.
Love what the Ravens have done. They addressed all 3 of their biggest needs with quality prospects and GREAT value. Jimmy Smith is a top-10 talent, Torrey Smith is a borderline 1st-rounder who went at the end of the 2nd round and Jah Reid could be their starting RT come opening day. Solid draft by the Oz.
Do you agree with the Pats pick of Nate Solder? I know the offensive line needs a little work, but I always felt like the defense was always more important to fix
Don't get me wrong, I like Solder and clearly New England does as well. But a pass rusher was a much greater need for the Patriots and they've yet to address it. They probably could've taken someone like Cameron Jordan, Adrian Clayborn or Muhammad Wilkerson with the 17th overall pick and still been able to get Gabe Carimi or Anthony Castonzo later on.
Some say Luke stocker resemble a young Jason witten. Do you think that he'll have as a productive career as witten?
I think that's primarily because they both went to Tennessee. Stocker wasn't nearly as productive as Witten in college and it's hard to imagine he'll mirror Witten's pro career. I like Stocker as a productive NFL TE but I'd be surprised to see him reach 7 Pro Bowls and be a 2-time All NFL selection.
When will sturdivent of unc be drafted
Soon. I have him as the next best ILB on the board.
What do you think the Redskins are going to end up doing at QB?
Your guess is as good as mine but I'm willing to bet at least the front office is hoping Shanahan and McNabb can coexist.
Was drafting a kicker a good idea for the Eagles
Yes. Akers is at the end of his career and Henery was the best available kicker in the 2011 draft class. Dude has a serious boot.
Why do they always skip Raiders picks. They talked about the players before and after Chekwa but not him. The announcers do this over and over.
Usually because they have to give the production truck enough time to find footage of the guy they just drafted.
Does Tampa Bay have one of the top overall drafts so far?
Absolutely. Think about a defensive line in Tampa consisting of Adrian Clayborn, Gerald McCoy, Brian Price and Da'Quan Bowers. I know everyone is infatuated with the Suh/Fairley combo but Tampa Bay will have the best d-line in football sooner rather than later.
I think the redskins are going to let rex grossman compete the starting position, he did good in houston ad he did good when given the opportunity in mcnabbs place plus he's been to a super bowl
Good luck with that.
What area do you think the vikings should address next
Probably defensive secondary or running back. Still some quality DBs out there (Sands, Burney) and they need to address the depth behind Adrian Peterson.
Donate Hightower you think he will be drafted
Yes...in the first round of the 2012 draft.
Odds of Tenn selecting another LB. or who do you think they go after
They could use more help at LB for sure. Guys like Greg Jones, Scott Lutrus or Ross Homan are still out there.
Hey look...it's D'Arcy Maine!! She's all yours...
Josh has been doing such a good job today and I was just going to let him go on but I guess I'll jump in here for a few minutes.
You were going to LET me? Pssssh...
We're currently watching a high school team get their picture taken on the stage in between picks. Day 3 of the NFL Draft, ladies and gentlemen!
Since the Eagles drafted a kicker is Akers gonna be with the team this season?
Looks like the writing is on the wall for Akers' time in Philly. After his epic fail in the Eagles' playoff game against the Packers and his age, I don't think he'll be back with the team this year. I don't think his career is over but after being with Philly for so long, it will be strange for him to play somewhere else. I'm slightly surprised they picked a kicker so early but clearly that's a priority for the team going forward.
As a life long Patriots fan, I wake up this morning feeling like Bradley Cooper in the, ""Hangover" absolutely perplexed and clueless as to what has occurred in the draft these past 2 days. Not one player drafted gets me the least bit excited and that doesn't even address the fact that the Patriots haven't sacked the QB in almost 5 years. What's the point in stockpiling all these picks when obviously they have no intention of using them. Sadly I've resigned myself to the fact, "In Bill I No Longer Trust." Am I possibly missing something???
Yes, but do you remember what happened over the last two days? If so, you're already better off than Bradley Cooper. Even if you're not happy with what you remember. It's hard to understand the Pats' strategy when it seems like they keep saving all these picks for a rainy day and then never using them. I'm still in awe over the Mallet pick more than anything. I wouldn't give up the faith in Belichick and Co. just yet though. It seems slightly arrogant to not use these picks but things have worked out okay for them recently.
Are the vikings making big mistakes in this draft?
All of the Vikings fans out there seem to think so. You guys definitely win our award for 'most disgruntled fan base'. Congrats? Impossible to know if these are mistakes or will ultimately be genius moves down the road. I'm leaning towards the former but we'll have to wait and see.
Do you think Colin Kaepernick has what it takes to be the Niners quarterback of the future?
I think Alex Smith would argue with that as he's rumored to be staying in SF. I think he's had a long enough time to develop into a franchise QB and he's yet to do so. Therefore the team needs to be proactive in to at least attempting to developing other talent for the future. The team was very impressed with Kaepernick during workouts so we'll see how they use him but he has potential to be a large part of the Niners' team down the road.
Josh -- Bruce Miller is the 20th ranked olb in the draft. At pick # 130 right now Chris Carter and Ross Homan ranked 6th and 7th at olb are still available. Do your homework or at least get Kiper's draft guide to flip through.
Hey, I never said they should draft him right now. I just said he's a good fit in New England. And I do have Kiper's Draft Guide and flip through it religiously.
Do you think that Mike Pouncy is a day 1 starter for the Dolphins.
Yeah, I think so. Only center on the Dolphins current roster is Joe Berger. Pouncey is a beast.
Any TEs left on the board that Denver could use?
Yes, 2 in particular I like. Nevada's Virgil Green and Marshall's Lee Smith. Green tore it up at the Combine running a 4.5 40-yard dash and posting the top TE vertical and broad jumps. Smith is a big body 6'6", 265 lbs who can be effective in the passing game and provide extra beef up front for the run.
Josh, thanks for your look on things, love reading what you have to say. And D'Arcy, I am also a big fan of yours, your 2010 World Cup Coverage is what got me into reading absolutely anything I could from ESPN, and I hope you get to enjoy as many cookies as you could ever want :)
This guy Chris...solid dude.
why didn't cowboys draft a conerback
Convinced you guys are messing with me now.
What are the possibilies of the texans going all defensive this draft
Would be surprised if that happened. Granted, most of their pressing needs are along the defensive side of the ball but they need more weapons on offense to compliment Andre Johnson and Arian Foster.
Who would be a sleeper pick at Qb now? Would Jerrod Johnson fall into that category and where could he get drafted
Safe to call Johnson a sleeper at this point. A deep, deep, DEEP sleeper. There may be 7 or 8 other QBs who have a chance to come off the board before him. Basically, he's an undrafted free agent most likely. Some under the radar QBs who have a better shot at being drafted are: Pat Devlin, Nathan Enderle and possibly Josh Portis.
Any good DTs left? My Broncos need one
If they don't draft a DT, what FAs could be available (assuming there is free agency at some point) for Denver?
Lots of questions about the Broncos and the DT spot. You're not looking at much at the DT spot at this point of the draft. Powe from Ole Miss could hear his name called as could Ian Williams from Notre Dame. One intriguing prospect is Adrian Taylor from Oklahoma. He was tearing it up last year before an Achilles injury sidelined him for the year.
What the deal with DJ Williams? Character's not an issue and he's got great hands and good speed. What's the knock on him? Where might he go?
Size is probably the issue with Williams. He's a shade under 6'3" and 245 lbs which is small for an NFL TE. I could be wrong, but I expect someone like Virgil Green from Nevada to come off the board first. In my opinion, he's this year's Jimmy Graham.
Are there any players left with the first name of christian? So we know who the vikings will draft next?
Yeah, Christian Clark DT from Cal Poly. (Not likely to be drafted)
do you think the packers should have traded up to get gabe carimi derreck sherrod is decent but it would have been smarter to get carimi
I personally like Carimi better than Sherrod, but I wouldn't have traded up to get him if I were Green Bay. The interesting caveat to that situation is that Carimi went to Chicago and the Packers will get to think about that decision twice a year for the next decade or so.
Please rationalize how you think dever has a better shot than Tampa to make the playoffs after our draft so far
Certainly wasn't comparing those two teams. Different conferences first of all. Let me be clear, I LOVE what Tampa Bay has done in this draft and I think they are probably one of those most up and coming teams in the league...but they play in a division with the Saints and Falcons. The Broncos play in the AFC West.
And the Patriots Hangover continues! Could you look up for me and tell me how many sacks Marcus Cannon had at TCU?
I hear you. Cannon, obviously, is an offensive tackle and not the pass rusher the Patriots need and clearly their fans want. Cannon is 6'6" and 360 lbs. You tell him he's not a good pick.
Why hasn't Kansas City drafted a offensive tackle
You'd have to ask them to be sure but I'll guess it's because there was a HUGE drop off in talent after the 1st-rounders. With Cannon going to New England that leaves guys like Lee Ziemba from Auburn and Jason Pinkston from Pitt. Not exactly an area of strength at this point.
10 bucks the cowboys pass over the kid from buffalo again
Cowboys just drafted Buffalo CB Josh Thomas. 5ht in the MAC in tackles last year.
D'Arcy,is josh jumping up n down after that pick by the cowboys?i know i am.hes not burton but a steal none the less
Josh isn't jumping up and down. In my opinion, safety was a bigger need but if the Cowboys were going to draft a corner, Burney from UNC would have made more sense to me. Whatever. Let's move on.
What grade would you give the Saints draft so far?
Cameron Jordan, Mark Ingram, Martez Wilson and Johnny Patrick get a B+ from me, but I'm not the authority by any means. What do YOU think they deserve?
Does jacquizz Rogers finally give the falcons a home run hitter at rb
In my opinion, not really. He's less than 5'6". FIVE FOOT SIX!! Danny Woodhead is taller than that. Of course, if the Falcons can get Danny Woodhead-type production out of Quizz, they'll be ecstatic. I'd be surprised if he developed into a "home run hitter" at the next level though.
Hey how will the nfc north handle the d line for the lions?
Good question. Packers and the Bears have drafted offensive linemen. Not sure what the Vikings are waiting for.
Who do you think in the AFC East has had the best draft so far?
In my opinion, Buffalo or Miami. The Patriots brought in some solid prospects including Nate Solder and Ras-I Dowling but I love the Bills getting Dareus, Williams, Sheppard and Johnny White late. Miami's 4th-round pick of Edmund Gates was pretty solid. Love Pouncey and Daniel Thomas.
Do you like KC drafting Ricky Stanti and do you think he will be a starter in a year or two
Why did the chiefs take stanzi? Cassal has big bucks on him and is coming off a season he performed at top level is it just to groom him in case injury or Cassel struggles
The only knock I keep hearing about Stanzi is his "lack of arm strength". He's almost 6'5" and 223 lbs. Good leader, accurate and has good footwork. Not sure he takes over in KC but he's at the very least a good backup option for the Chiefs now and could develop into a starter 2 or 3 years down the line.
Detroit or Tampa who has the better d line (providing bowers is playin of course)
Since you asked, I'll say Tampa Bay at this moment. Provided Bowers plays next season. Suh and Fairley could use some help off the edge to alleviate the massive amount of double teams they're sure to see.
Josh, Jac Rogers is a version of MiniMan Herron, who you might recall as a Jayhawk that played well in the CFL - then moved on to the Patriots where he played with Jim Plunkett. He was a contributor. I see a similar role for Rodgers as a Falcon. He is explosive and gets lost up the middle - until you find him 12 yards downfield.
Gotta love a CFL reference. Hey, you're right. I loved Quizz as a college player. Big difference between Pac-10 defenses and the NFL defenses. I hope he succeeds. Love the fact that Atlanta is stockpiling speedy, offensive weapons.
What team in the afc south has upgraded the most to you guys thus far and has put themselves in a position to be good
I'll say the Texans. Love the approach to revamp the defense. Think they got 2 high-motor pass rushers in Watt and Reed and 2 ball-hawking corners in Harris and Carmichael. Plus they drafted Shiloh Keo, the safety from Idaho. I interviewed him at the Combine and he got all choked up talking about how much he wanted to get drafted and be a part of a team. If you've ever seen the guy play, he brings that same emotion and passion to the field. Good guy, good pick.
Do you think the Bengals have a chance at the afc north title
I'm no NFL expert, but since you asked...no. It looks like they'll be extremely young and inexperienced on offense if Dalton and A.J. Green are replacing Palmer and Ocho. I really like the Bengals draft as a whole (LOVE the Robert Sands pick) -- Really think the Bengals made a statement in this draft about where they're heading. Be patient.
The Southern Miss WR. I had really high expectations for him coming into this past college football season and needless to say, he disappointed greatly. There are some red flags due to character issues and he didn't test all that well in the speed department (4.59 at the Combine) but he's 6'6" 230 lbs and could develop into a serviceable pro if he's drafted into the right system. My opinion.
What tight end talent is left. Should Miami pick a tight end in the 6th
What's the knock on virgil green? Third round talent (possibly better) in the late fifth round? Why not
As I said earlier, I love Virgil Green. He's the new Jimmy Graham. Someone will take a shot pretty soon I'd imagine.
So tampa has adresses all of their needs so far except ot how do they upgrade they're line now though?
I don't think there are any options remaining at OT who could turn into starters right away. But there are still a few options for Tampa Bay to improve the OL depth. DeMarcus Love, Jason Pinkston, Lee Ziemba and Kyle Hix are interesting prospects to me.
Pinkston just snagged by the Browns as I was typing that.
Anyway new England still take McElroy? If not his landing spots are relatively slim
I would've bet McElroy could have landed in New England before the Mallett pick. To me, he still fits the mold of what I think the Patriots look for in their draft picks but I'd say it's unlikely now. I don't think his landing spots are thin if he doesn't end up in NE. Teams are always looking for QB depth, as evidenced by the Houston Texans just drafting UNC QB T.J. Yates.
WR.Edmond Gates is being compared to WR.Mike Wallace is that a fair comparison.
That's probably one of the most accurate comparisons I've heard for any player. Wallace was a 3rd round pick and Gates was a 4th rounder but they're both around 6-foot and can absolutely fly. Love the pick for the Dolphins.
Could you see McElroy or another qb landing in Tampa because we no longer have a reliable backup
The Bucs could certainly use some QB depth. I'm more than a little surprised that Greg McElroy is still available and T.J. Yates came off the board before him. With the 5th round almost over, McElroy provides great value for someone at this point.
Any good cb left
I'm borderline shocked Kendric Burney is still available.
How do you project Dion Lewis doing this year? After watching him the past two years I think he can be a great backup for Philly with their west coast offense.
Yeah, I think Philly is a really good landing spot for Lewis. The offense fits his style and he gets to backup his former mentor, Shady McCoy.
Do u think there is that brady-LIKE prospect remaining in any of the rounds left, or is the last few rounds just a waste of time?
You never know. I can't help but think Greg McElroy may be that "Tom Brady-type" prospect in the later rounds. He's smart, accurate and an excellent leader...all the same characteristics Brady had coming out of Michigan. Now, I'm certainly not saying McElroy WILL be Tom Brady...but I think he has a chance at starting in the league within a few years given the right system. And the last few rounds are the best part of the draft!! Never a waste of time.
D'Arcy Maine is done signing autographs and taking photos with the fans and is ready to take your questions and comments. Go for it DM...
Thanks Josh. You're just doing such a good job, I didn't want to steal your thunder or anything.
Is the future of Ryan Mallet as the eventual successor to Tom Brady or as a groom-and-trade like Matt Cassel and the like? Also, how do you feel about Dallas's draft?
Interesting question, Brian. Although I don't know if the Pats plan was always to develop Cassel and then use him in a trade. I think they were pretty happy to have him when Brady went down in the first game of the season. I would think they're cautiously optimistic that Mallet could be a starting QB down the road after Brady is all said and done but I don't think they feel rushed to find Tom Terrific's successor. Barring injury, he should be around and effective for a few more years.
do you think cam newton was a good #1 pick
High risk, high reward. Carolina obviously thought the upside of Newton was too high to resist. I don't hate it. But we can certainly readdress this topic once the season gets underway.
Mark down this day NFL fans and rejoice, BIll Belichik's genius has officially turned to plain stupidiness. He actually thinks that the 11 guys on the field can only be OL's, CB's, and TE's. I'm so ashamed to call the Patriots my favorite team but what do you expect when you head coach is also your GM, Defensive Coordinator, Film Guy, Water Boy, Parking Lot Attendant, Team Receptionist, and after this weekends draft, the laughing stock of the entire NFL. To give the Pats an F for this draft would be giving them way to much credit.
Howie, after the Vikes fans, you are No. 2 most angry fan in the chat today. Congrats. Keep the bitterness coming our way.
When is greg mcroy alabama qb going
You have to believe that McElroy would be great for the niners system if they knew he or even mallet for that matter was still available when they were would they have reached for cap
where do you think QB GregMcelroy will be drafted? what are your thoughts on him?
So many questions about Greg McElroy coming in right now. I'm going to bet he's regretting having a camera crew in his house right about now. Still a number of teams out there who are interested in QBs. If he's still around by pick 179, I think the 'Fins will take him. Just my guess. He should be off the board sooner rather than later.
What do you think the redskins will do at the QB position?
Say a prayer? Is that an option? The McNabb experiment didn't actually turn out as Synder hoped. They've yet to take a QB in this Draft so maybe they're hoping to acquire one by trade. Maybe Carson Palmer? I can't imagine it will be the year of either McNabb or Rex Grossman in the nation's capital.
What do you think of the qb the bears drafted? Good pick? Don't know my about him
Bears took Nathan Enderle from Idaho with their 5th round pick. People were most impressed with work ethic and determination and seem to feel like he would make a good backup initially and could ultimately become a starter after a few years learning the pro game. Jay Cutler isn't exactly known for his toughness (that's the nicest way I could say that) so it can't hurt to have a work horse willing to play at any notice on the bench.
You said by 179 if he still around the "fins" will take him. Who are the fins
Dolphins. Laces out.
The bills need a te... I'm still available and they passed over me.... I feel hopeless want to shed some light on where I'll land
......I was supposed to be a third rounder what went wrong?
Well I for one am happy you've chosen to spend your day of not getting drafted with us, Virgil. Or at least fans of Virgil. Lots of questions about Green in terms of size, blocking ability and general technique. He has some major potential due to his athleticism and catching ability but I think a lot of teams are hesitant. Not a bad option for a team that isn't looking for a TE to make an immediate impact and can spend some time developing him on the practice field.
Who hates this draft more vikes fans, pats fans, da'quan bowers, Ryan mallet, virgil green, or McElroy
Hard to think anyone hates this draft more than the two guys you mentioned who have yet to get a phone call but the Vikings fans who have written it are making a strong case.
I'm a better option for the vikes right now then christian ponder. Why did they just toss me aside?
Hey Joe. Pretend I'm singing that. I was impressed by Webb's game against the Eagles last year but it wasn't exactly enough to convince me that he's the future of the franchise. Doesn't hurt to take another QB and make them work for it in training camp.
Alright...I want to hear from you guys. Tell me who had the WORST draft and why. Go!
Oakland, terrible draft.
Raiders I mean last years draft gave so much hope. this years however they went back to reaching in players again
I actually like the Denarius Moore pick but yeah, I hear you guys. After drafting McClain and Jacoby Ford last year, there just isn't a whole lot of personality to the Raiders draft this year. BUT, they did draft the guy who ran the fastest 40-time at the Combine (again) in Miami CB DeMarcus Van Dyke. There's something to be said for consistency.
Worst draft- Atlanta Falcons. At least the Vikes are adding pieces. The Falcons traded away way too much just for Julio Jones. He's talented enough to take there, but that was just way too much. And if I'm not mistaken they also traded up for J. Rodgers? Really?
Interesting take on the other side of the Falcons-Browns trade. The Falcons did give up A LOT for Jones. a 1, 2 and 4 this year plus a 1 and a 4 next year. That's a bunch of picks. But, they did get a dude who ran a 4.3 40 at the Combine on a BROKEN FOOT.
And with the 180th pick the Baltimore Ravens select a qb not named Greg McElroy
Wow. Tryod taylor to the ravens, what do u think of that josh?
Yeah...they took Tyrod Taylor. Pretty shocking to be honest. Can't imagine they like him as a quarterback but remember, this is the same team who drafted Troy Smith. Best case scenario for Tyrod.
So another qb and te came off the board and neither is us. What did we do?
At this point, start to worry. 2 teams felt Tyrod Taylor and Richard Gordon were better options at their respective positions than the 2 of you. I don't agree...but I'm not an NFL GM.
What do you think of the Rams' receiver heavy draft in top rounds when they have so many needs?
This is my opinion, but I honestly believe no team had a greater positional need that the Rams had at WR/TE. Their leading receiver last season was Danny Amendola. Think about that for a second. I like Kendricks at TE and Pettis at WR. Salas was one of the most productive WRs in college football the past 2 seasons (video game stats) but he runs like a TE. Still, I think the Rams drafted out of need and helped out last year's top pick Sam Bradford a great deal.
Giants just drafted Michigan State LB Greg Jones. Just want to say that I called that 3 rounds ago. That is all.
Is shaky smithson going to be picked
He doesn't rate very highly as a WR prospect but he has exceptional return skills and should be worth a flyer in the 7th round.
Hearing a lot about how good the Saints and Lions drafts have been. Is it just because they've made less picks? It was a steal getting Prine at 19, Marvin Austin should fit perfectly in that aggressive d-line, and Jennigan could have gone earlier as well. I've heard that he's one of those guys teams might have made a reach on, but fell into the open arms of NY.
The Giants have had a decent draft. The Amukamara pick was them just taking the best player on their board as opposed to drafting for need. The Giants 2 biggest needs were LB and OL. Amukamara may not even start in New York for a couple years. Guys like Aaron Ross, Corey Webster and Terrell Thomas will make it tough for Prince to see the field in anything but Nickel packages. Love the Jernigan and Greg Jones picks.
What's a Allen Bradford
Bradford is a big RB from USC who was slowed by numerous injuries throughout his career. He's a high-character guy who has a chance to be productive in an offense like Tampa Bay's.
Where's mark herzlich going to go
Well...Tedy Bruschi was just on ESPN saying he hopes Herzlich ends up in New England. Can't think of a better fit.
McElroy is on the phone. Philly? New England?
Guess it's neither. The McElroy slide continues.
Hey. Do you think the panthers will be in NFL playoffs next year with this first pick ,Newton
Hey guys ! Do you think the panthers will be in playoffs next season with this first pick? Thank you :)
If I really knew that answer, I'd move to Vegas and stop punching a clock. But since you guys are asking, I don't think Cam Newton alone makes the Panthers a playoff team. Not this year anyway.
Hey guys ! Do you think the panthers will be in playoffs next season with this first pick? Thank you :)
whats takin noel devine so long to come of the board
Just a guess, but I'll say lack of size and a down year in 2010. There are better prospects available at this point. Namely, Da'Rel Scott from Maryland and Anthony Allen from Georgia Tech. My opinion.
McElroy at #213.
That would be Washington's pick. Can't say it wouldn't make sense. Adam Schefter was on a few minutes ago saying the Redskins could possibly be looking at starting the season with John Beck under center.
What you think of the cardinals draft so far?
In my opinion, the Cardinals have done very well. Love the fact that they stayed at number 5 and were still able to grab Peterson. Some people had Ryan Williams as the top-rated RB in the entire class, so there's good value there. I really like Sam Acho and Quan Sturdivant as productive athletes who could develop into starters in a year or 2.
Do you think saints will trade Reggie now that they have Ingram. He's got so much potential
Interesting question. If you believe Reggie Bush's Twitter account, he's basically packed his bags already. If I were New Orleans, I'd try to keep Bush and revamp his role in the offense with Ingram getting the majority of the carries. Reggie Bush is most effective when he's out in space, split out or as a punt returner. He's too talented to just trade away.
Will Locker help Titans this year
I'll go out on a limb and say he will. I'm not sure if Kerry Collins is coming back or not...I'd say probably not...which leaves Rusty Smith and Chris Simms on the current roster. You do the math.
More accurate passer Jimmy or Cam? Think there's a a position battle in the future or has cam locked it up?
Both are accurate enough if they have someone to throw to. It will probably start off as a QB competition in camp but Cam should be given every opportunity to take over the offense. Unless he can't call the plays...
We are into the 7th round my friends. Thank you for sticking around and talking draft with D'Arcy and I. Let's finish strong...
Virgil Green can relax. He's found a home in Denver. I know he's not the DT all the Broncos fans have been screaming for, but the most athletic TE in the draft in the 7th round is an absolute steal. Broncos making a strong case for best overall draft.
With the mark herzlich talk I've been hearing, if he's not drafted soon, any chance my Texans take him withe the final pick.
In Round 7, all bets are off. Teams aren't drafting for starters right now. Wherever Herzlich winds up at this point, he's going to have to prove he belongs and earn every ounce of playing time. Houston is as good a destination as any.
I think Ahmad black is underrated I think he'll turn heads. Prediction for defensive rookie of the year yet?
Big fan of Ahmad Black. If you're asking for my Defensive Rookie of the Year prediction...and you are...I'll say J.J. Watt. Total guess.
McElroy to the J-E-T-S...ah, you know the rest. Thoughts?
Is ponder the answer for the Vikings? Joe Webb was looking promising
Well, since he was the 12th overall selection...he better be. Joe Webb is an outstanding athlete but I'm not so sure he's an NFL QB. That being said, I'm not sure Christian Ponder is either. Stay tuned.
Do u think the steelers would pick up Noel Devine as an undrafted free agent bcuz there were talks on the radio that he would fit in here with their system and the steelers were interested in him?
I like it. The Steelers throw a ton of screen passes and that's probably the most effective way to utilize Devine.
Do ubthink I should have been drafted earlier?
Yes, I do think you should have been drafted earlier. At least ahead of guys like Byron Maxwell and Justin Rogers and Chris L. Rucker who was suspended earlier this season while at Michigan State. With McElroy off the board, I guess you're the one we're all waiting for now.
Had to be the Jets - Joe Willie was / is from Bama. Had to be the Jets as a matter of history. Besides he is better than Sanchez so that helps.
McElroy is better than Sanchez?? Whoa, strong words there dude. Anyone agree?
I'll take that as a no. There wasn't one response there that I could post here. Sanchez it is. In other news, 49ers take UCF DE Bruce Miller. Good late round pick. Effort guy who keeps coming after the quarterback.
Should the Colts have focused on defense with the first 2 picks. Don't understand why D was not the main priority.
The Colts have struggled with their offensive line depth...or lack thereof...for a few years now. They tried to address their need for a LT a couple years ago with Tony Ugoh but he's been inconsistent at best. In my opinion, they grabbed the top tackle in the draft in Anthony Castonzo and helped out the interior with Ben Ijalana. Peyton is happy..and really, isn't that all that really matters?
Why do you think teams were so hesitant to draft Daquan Bowers? A month ago he was a top 3 pick
I was at the Combine and all anyone was talking about was Bowers knee and how bad it really was. It's been reported that it's essentially bone-on-bone and that he'll need major surgery within the next 4 years. As talented as he is, that's not the kind of risk you want to take with a 1st round pick.
What's your opinion on the Julio Jones move? I think he's not worth it. He is the fastest player in the draft but he is the equivalent of 2 high quality picks. Not 5
We won't know the full extent of this deal until a few years down the road. If the Falcons win the Super Bowl next year or the year after and Julio Jones is a large part of that offense, is it worth 5 picks then? I agree it's a TON of draft choices and a huge risk to leverage the future of your franchise like that. ut again, Jones put up the most eye-popping numbers while at the Combine and he did it on a broken foot. Dude is special.
What was the biggest surprise of the draft for you
Tough to say but I was a little surprised Blaine Gabbert slide all the way to no. 10. Also, the Seahawks drafting Alabama OL James Carpenter in the 1st round definitely caught me off guard.
Do you think casey matthews will turn out to be half the player clay is ?
Half the player? Sure. Again, I'm no NFL scout or personnel director but I don't see that much of a difference between the 2 other than size. Clay is 6'3" and Casey is 6'0". Both play with a ton of intensity and are relentless. Good pick for Philly.
With this draft do you think that the browns got enough parts to address their needs, and if so do you feel they can improve their record this year?
The thing that stands out with the Browns draft is they loaded up on athleticism. Taylor is a beast. Sheard, Little and Cameron are all serious athletes and Owen Maricic played both ways in college!! Plus, they took a CB by the name of Buster Skrine who posted one of the fastest 40-times at the Combine. I think the Browns got better. Period.
With everything you've seen from this years draft, who do you see as the strongest contender for Andrew Luck in next years draft?
I'll give you 4 names: Oklahoma QB Landry Jones, Alabama RB Trent Richardson, Nebraska DT Jared Crick and Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd. Total guesses. I do think Jones has the best chance of competing with Luck to be the top pick overall.
I read the kickers stats that the eagles drafted and based on what I read I dont think akers has a chance to make the roster , agreed ?
Not sure I'd say he doesn't have a chance to make the roster, but you're right...Alex Henery is the real deal. He missed 8 FGs in his entire college career, booted a 57-yarder AND he punts!! Totally worth a 4th-round pick in my opinion.
Why hasnt BC LB Mark Herzliech been drafted yet?
Why is Mark Herzlich still undrafted? Many people had a 4th round grade on him.
Has mark herzlich been drafted yet?
Tons of Herzlich questions. Look, I want to see him get drafted just as much as the next guy. He's an incredible story and an even better human being. Hopefully he comes off the board before the day is over. But even if he doesn't, Herzlich is the type of guy who refuses to fail and that kind of attitude is welcome on any NFL roster.
Who do you think had the best draft in the nfc east and why ?
It PAINS me to admit this, but I think the Giants have had the best draft. They selected impact players at every position of need and took advantage of a top-10 talent sliding all the way down to no. 19. Especially love the picks of Jernigan, Greg Jones and Da'Rel Scott.
Here are a few notable 7th round picks -- 22) Ravens: RB Anthony Allen 23) Saints: DE Greg Romeus 24) Jets: WR Scotty McKnight 27) Falcons: DE Cliff Matthews
Do you think the bengals should get a running back here with their last pick and if they shouldwho should they get?
I like Darren Evans from Virginia Tech. Has some injury concerns but certainly worth a flyer here in the 7th round.
How tall is 49ers new Qb
Kaepernick is 6'6" and a former MLB prospect. Rocket arm and good mobility. Needs to work on accuracy and taking snaps from under center. Thinking he's got a pretty good head coach to show him the ropes.
Do you think watkins and wilkerson (eagles, jets) were reaches in the first rd ?
Good question. Perhaps Watkins was slightly...but offensive guard was a very thin position this year. The Eagles identified a need there and satisfied it with the top guard in the draft. Wilkerson is a guy who many experts have said would have been a top-10 pick had he come out next year...so to get him with the 30th pick signifies very good value for the Jets.
Any chance the skins deal with the eagles again and try for kolb ?
That'd be interesting. Considering how it worked out for Washington the last time...sure, why not?
Just saw the Montana kid, Jimmy Wilson, highlights and wow, the hits that guy gave out were devastating. Almost like a young Brian Dawkins.
The guy is a virtual unknown. He brings the lumber though. Perfect project to take a chance on in the 7th round.
What the h e-double hockey sticks was philly thinking passing on jimmy smith and grabbing watkins ? Good or bad ?
Lots of Eagles questions coming in. Yeah, Smith had some major flags around him and Philadelphia is a YOUNG team with, let's be honest...some questionable characters already. Offensive line was a definite need and the Eagles scored the top guard in the class. Can't hate on that.
3 USC picks just went in a row: FB Stanley Havili to the Eagles, WR David Ausberry to the Raiders and LB Malcolm Smith to former coach Pete Carroll and the Seahawks.
Josh, D'Arcy Great job on the draft. Very enjoyable for all the die hards. Your hard work is appreciated by the readers!
Thanks Beaver...you were a dedicated chatter all day. We appreciate you.
Why didn't the Steelers go for a top CB early?
There really wasn't one available with the 31st overall selection. Probably the closest was Texas CB Aaron Williams and he didn't really have a 1st-round grade.
GREAT 7th-round pick right there by the Broncos in Oklahoma DE/OLB Jeremy Beal. Can't express this enough...I really love what Denver has done over these 3 days. Tough-nosed, high-effort, defensive players. Watch out for the Broncos.
If Colt McCoy doesn't work out this year, any chance the Browns use that extra pick in the 1st next year to move up for Andrew Luck?
Probably not. It's costly to move up in the 1st round and it's outrageously expensive to move into the top spot. Even with 2 1st rounders, I'm not sure Cleveland could get it done...BUT it all depends on who actually owns the 1st pick. If it's Carolina again (for example), do you see them drafting Andrew Luck or trading out? Yeah, exactly.
Who had the best day three ?
Really like what the Broncos, Giants, Eagles and Ravens did today.
To those of you who have stuck it out with us over the last 72 hours, you're awesome. I would draft you. But there's a reason I'm not a GM. And what a job Josh has done doing 90% of the work in this chat. I'm impressed.
You got me with the yeah, exactly. First instinct was "Yeah they trade out. Cam Newtons the future." But then again, so was Jimmy Clausen. And Matt Moore. Anyways, thanks for the insight today.
Mean no disrespect. Just hammering home the point. It's the 7th round and I've been awake sitting in the same seat at Radio City since Thursday afternoon. I may need help.
But who's counting?
Out of the highly regarded qb's in this draft who do you believe will turn out to be busts ? And do you envision any stars out of the group ?
I prefer to use the term 'Ryan Leafs' instead of 'busts'. Just drives the point home that much stronger. I honestly don't think anyone is a sure fire star QB in this group. I think Newton has the most potential to be both in all honesty. You just never know.
Can I be named 'Ms. Irrelevant' of this chat due to my lack of contribution for, ahem, 97.4% of the time?
It's Mr. Irrelevant time. Any guesses?
Will I be mr irrelevant?
Really hope so.
If you had Cheta Ozougwu. You win...whatever you want.
On that note...we're all done kids. D'Arcy is off discussing the lockout with Commissioner Goodell and I need a nap. Thanks to everyone who chatted with us during these 3 days, it was a ton of fun. Thank you!!
