Chat with Barry Melrose

Barry Melrose
  (2:01 PM)

I know there is a lot of shock to the Wahsington Capitol fans out there. All I have to say is wait until next year.

Thomas Kunter (Detroit)

Will the Sharks win tonight?

Barry Melrose
  (2:02 PM)

No i think Detroit is going to win. I think they have too much pride and too many great players to get beat four straight.

Mike (Mizzou)

Are you surprised at how the Sharks have taken it to the Red Wings so far in their series given how well Detroit played vs. Phoenix?

Barry Melrose
  (2:03 PM)

The Sharks are a great team but don't forget two games went into overtime. It could easily be 2-1 Detroit right now. And don't forget the Sharks beat Detroit in last seasons playoffs also.

Kevin (San Francisco)

In a Sharks-Canucks West final, which team has more offensive depth?

Barry Melrose
  (2:04 PM)

I would say it's pretty even. They both have great lines at can score. I think this series will come down to goaltending.

Peter (Milwaukee)

Barry, is this Lids last year? My heart tells me so.

Barry Melrose
  (2:05 PM)

I don't think so, I think he will play one more year. He had a great year and he is still one of the best defensemen in the game. He was healthy and it's really tough to quit playing when you are still great.

Sharks Bandwagon (Rolling through Detroit)

Barry... You gonna be jumping on any time soon???

Barry Melrose
  (2:06 PM)

Maybe in the Finals. I think whoever wins the West, wins the Stanley Cup.

Chuck (Paw Paw, MI)

What can the Red Wings do to avoid a sweep tonight?

Barry Melrose
  (2:06 PM)

Score in overtime.

Lauri (Boston)

If the Bruins close out the Flyers, how do you think the Bruins/Lightning series will shape out?

Barry Melrose
  (2:08 PM)

I would give the edge in goal to the Bruins. Edge on defense to the Bruins. Offense to the Lighting. Special teams to the Lighting. My pick would be Bruins in seven.

Harv (CT)

Barry wen went from a bunch of 7 game series in round 1 to potentially almost all sweeps in round 2. What gives?

Barry Melrose
  (2:09 PM)

Crazy! Obviously teams that are doing the sweeping really pulled their games together in the first round. Saw things they needed to work on and fixed those problems.

Pekka Rinne (Nashville)

Are we done? Or can we find enough offense to make this a series?

Barry Melrose
  (2:10 PM)

Sorry Rinne, but I think you are done. You needed to win Game 3. Vancouver is winning without the Sedin twins being major contributors.

rob (teaneck, nj)

the flyers are maxed out on payroll, they still don't win, where do they go from here?

Barry Melrose
  (2:11 PM)

I think they have to address their goaltending situation. Maybe make some trades to clear some cap room and get a goalie.

Mike (Atlanta)

Is Bobrovsky the long term answer for Philly? I know he's young but it's frustrating having the same isuue every year. What do they do if he's not the future?

Barry Melrose
  (2:12 PM)

Well I know Philly though he was the answer but they certainly gave up on him very quickly int he first round.

ryan jones (obx)

how do you think the blackhawks will look next year?

Barry Melrose
  (2:13 PM)

Not much different. There isn't much they can do with their cap space and obviously they are still a very good team.

Bryan (Columbus)

Who's more likely to come back down 0-3 in the series? Flyers or Red Wings?

Barry Melrose
  (2:14 PM)

Red Wings but it would be very hard against San Jose because they are an excellent hockey club.

Steve (Michigan)

Who are your frontrunners for the Conn Smythe so far?

Barry Melrose
  (2:14 PM)

Tim Thomas, Marty St. Louis and Ryan Kesler.

Mike (Nashville (with hot girlfriend))

Does Nashville open up their checkbook to keep Weber (and his awesome beard) or does he leave for GREENER pastures?

Barry Melrose
  (2:15 PM)

I think they have to keep Weber. It's hard to sell it to your fans that you are trying to win and let your caption and best player walk.

Nate (Bristol, CT)

Barry, do the Bruins exorcise last years demons tonight? If so, how would you rate a Lightning-Bruins series?

Barry Melrose
  (2:16 PM)

I think the Bruins do win tonight and I think they will beat the Lightning in seven games.

Steve (Phoenix)

Transplanted Bay Area Sharks Fan.... I've never seen Joe Thornton play this well overall. What to you think is contributing to this (finally)?

Barry Melrose
  (2:17 PM)

I think just, he has too. He's under a tremendous amount of pressure to preform and he has a great supporting cast.

Guy Boucher (Tampa Bay)

Why did I get ZERO nods for the Jack Adams?

Barry Melrose
  (2:18 PM)

Well they can only nominate three but I think you have done a fantastic job this season with the Lightning.

Marc (Malden, MA)

What are your thoughts on the NHL staying with NBC/Comcast/Versus?

Barry Melrose
  (2:19 PM)

Obviously I was disappointed. I know ESPN tried very hard to get it back but the size of the deal shows a tremendous commitment by NBC.

Paul (KC)

Hockey fan in Kansas City...what are the chances we ever get our own team?

Barry Melrose
  (2:20 PM)

Slim but not out of the question. You need some wealthy guy in Kansas City that wants a hockey team.

Kevin (boston)

barry your on sportscenter right now? which is supposed to be live... how is this possible?

Barry Melrose
  (2:21 PM)

I taped that at 12:15 p.m. ET and that rolls once an hour until 3 p..m ET where I will tape another one. And do that over at 6 p.m. ET.

Rob (Boston)

True or false: Hockey is the greatest sport on Earth!

Barry Melrose
  (2:21 PM)

True by far.

Matt (Chicago)

Is there anyway that ESPN will consider doing a 30 minute NHL show nightly?

Barry Melrose
  (2:22 PM)

No, not without us having the hockey package.

Dougie (Indiana)

Hey Barry, big fan of yours. Will we ever see Wayne Gretzky coach in the NHL again?

Barry Melrose
  (2:22 PM)

I don't think so. I hope he comes back into hockey in some role but I don't think it will be as a coach.

Ryan (OH)

What do you think about Pavalski stepping it up in the playoffs this year?

Barry Melrose
  (2:24 PM)

Well he did the same thing last season. If you look at his history going back to college, he's always had the knack of scoring big goals.

Kelly (Huntsville, AL)

Who's your favorite player to watch in the second rounds so far?

Barry Melrose
  (2:25 PM)

I would have to say Marty St. Louis from Tampa.

Jeff (Clearwater)

Who do you think has the best Power Play and Penalty Kill in the playoffs right now?

Barry Melrose
  (2:26 PM)

I think Tampa has the best power play and Boston probably has the best penalty killing.

Bill (New England)

Happy Aniversary to the Whalers leaving for Carolina....still sad to this day.

Barry Melrose
  (2:27 PM)

I know there are a lot of Whalers fans here at ESPN and they are still loyal to the Whale.

Barry Melrose
  (2:27 PM)

Everybody enjoy the games tonight. Talk to you again next week!
