Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:59 PM)

Greetings people. How are we doing? Thanks for coming by.

Casey Flynn (Burbank, California)

Hey Paul, Are you higher on the Jake Locker than your collegues? It's seems everyone has at least a little bit of disgust for that pick except for you. And since you will come up with almost any reason to rag-on the Titans to prove your not a home-er, I'm guessing you like him more than your leading on.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

As I wrote, I don't have a problem with them grabbing a quarterback at eight if they think he's going to be good. Washington was bad. I try to give incoming guys benefit of the doubt until they give me an NFL reason to be critical.

Jim Bob Cooter (Keizer, Oregon)

How much do you think Fisher shielded us from Bud Adams' "eccentricity," and how much more of Bad Bud will we see now that he's gone in your opinion?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

He doesn't meddle a lot on football stuff. He can be cheap on non-football stuff. Don't know there is anything for Fisher or Munchak to shield us from, outside of No. 10.

Paul (Jacksonville, FL)

Jags did say they wanted a "bigger" receiver pre-draft & took a smaller guy (Cecil Shorts) in the 4th round. You think they may be targeting a guy in FA? If so, which FA WR would fit the long term void of a "Jimmy Smith" caliber?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

I don't know who the target might be, but he needs to be big and fast.

Adam Z (Austin, TX)

If the colts 2011 draft pans out early, where our first three picks turn out to be good starters in their rookie year, what is the colts new big weakness?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Are the receivers all healthy? Then possibly safety.

Tariq (Jax, FL)

PK, what the flip is going on with my Celitics??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

I'm from NJ. You think I worry about the Celtics?

johnnybee (chico, california)

which team in the afc south is going to be the most prepared after the effects of the lockout?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

The Colts. By miles. Most talented. Best quarterback, and he's got them working already.

Mike (St. Augustine)

Do you think Will Rackley can supplant Eben Britton at right tackle (where Rackley played in college), and kick Britton inside (since he's a more natural mauler/guard)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

I've heard nothing to indicate that's the plan. I expect Rackley to challenge inside and Britton to stay put.

Gone passing (Whereabouts unknown )

Do you know who Peyton has been working out with this summer and where?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Different places. At least once in Chattanooga, with several receivers from the team. Unsurprisingly, super-secret.

Jeff Fisher (Nashville)

Hey Paul, some of my friends in the media are mentioning that I want to climb a big mountain like it'll be some sort of personal accomplishment to overcome that challenge. They don't get it - it's stress relief, not a challenge. Climbing Kilimanjaro is easy compared to five years of managing Vince Young's mood swings.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

I can't use this question because I am trying to talk less about No. 10.

Addison (Wilmington, NC)

Who is the most plausible veteran quarterback that you can see the Titans making a run at?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Matt Hasselbeck.

Ben Ijalana (The Gym )

There has been talk of te Colts wanting to play me at guard. But on draft day John Gruden said he saw the Colts playing me at left tackle because of m athleticism and moving Anthony "Gonzo" Castonzo to right tackle. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I've heard you may wind up being the better left tackle of the two.

Denny (Indianapolis)

Could you use an Intern?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Yes. Can you start Monday? No pay OK?

Luke (Nebraska)

Why does everyone give Donald Brown a lot of grief? I thought he had a great 2011 season given what he had to work with. When he started at RB he did not do very well but look at the O-line he had to work with. Look at his 129 yard game against the Jaguars. He definitely had a bright future. What are your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

He was great if you like indecisive. And not reliable in protection.

David (NYC)

What's your take on Goodell's call to Nate Dunleavy? Do you think he called because he knows that Nate is a Colts blogger, or would he afford the same consideration to any season ticket holder?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

If I'd quoted someone else saying the same thing, I think he probably would have called that person.

David (NYC)

Paul...gut feeling right now...what's the probability that there's no NFL season and I lose my excuse for not leaving my couch every Sunday in the fall?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

There is no way there is no season. Players won't leave the money on the table. Short careers to earn those salaries.

JJ (Minnesota)

Which team do you see having a major flop this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Bears and Bucs.

Brett (North Branford, CT)

Welcome to CT Paul, love everything you write and your chats...With the Titans possibly letting Stephen Tulloch go and having a young and inexperienced linebacking core in Spoon, G-Mac, Ayers, who do you see being the leader of this defense? The guy who wears the stickered helmet and receives the play calls...This defense lacks leadership

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Thanks. Spoon is not young or inexperience. Leadership is an issue. Spoon is one guy who needs to be heard from. Finnegan sounds ready to do better in that department. I don't think Tully's leadership extended beyond the backers, really.

Jim Bob Cooter (Keizer, Oregon)

You mentioned Bud is cheap on the non-football; does that have much effect on the way players play or a team functions (i.e. scouting, training, assistant coaching, etc.)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Bud needing receipts for anything non-football over $50, which he once did, doesn't affect the way a player plays.

Chris (Indianapolis)

How much stock do teams put in combine/pro day weight vs. playing weight in college? Usually there isn't much difference, but sometimes there's a difference of ten pounds or more (Drake Nevis, Rodney Hudson, etc). Do some teams favor one measurement and some the other? Do they average the two numbers? Or am I overthinking things?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Overthinking. If a guy is told he'll be viewed as a better pro if he drops 10 or gains 10, then he generally does so.

Trip (Jacksonville, FL)

How much do you think these player organized workouts are going to ACTUALLY help prepare them for the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Not a lot.

Ben (UK)

Polian stated a few months back that we will actively pursue targets in Free Agency this year. With the offensive line seemingly addressed and the defensive line slightly strengthened, does this still hold true? If so (apart from SS) where do you foresee any potential investment?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

A safety perhaps. Another DT.

Jay (Knoxville, TN)

Any more Top 10 lists on the way? Centers? Punt/Kick Returners? Fanbases?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Perhaps...

Mikey (Jacksonville, FL)

What makes you think Wayne Weaver is an "ineffective" owner?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

He promoted Shack Harris and watched him butcher five of six first rounders. Your boss give you that much time to mess things up?

Ray (Miami)

Do you think the Colts should have stayed put in the second as opposed to moving up? While I love Ijalana, I feel that improving the defense is more important in terms of helping Manning win and we might have gotten Paea, who a lot of people liked. What's your take, if you were Chris Polian at that time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I like what they did. O-line needs revamping, they revamped. Have no idea if they liked Paea.

KZ The Man (Rap Battle in the Ville)

Paul, most people will agree that David Garrard can't throw the deep ball very well. That begs the question, why are people so bent on the Jaguars getting a big deep-threat receiver now? There seems to be a nice crop of receivers coming in next years class, so why wait till then?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

A deep receiver still dictates coverage.

jokerimual (Indiana)

How many games do you see the Colts winning the South by this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Several. But let's see free agency.

Ryan (Rochester, NY)

McClendon was a no show for the Colts last season. Any chance he pulls a "Moala" and has a great 2nd season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I'm sure they hope he emerges in the same way.

Keith (Nashville, TN)

Do the Titans feel embarassed that they cut LeGarrette Blount only to have him rush for 1000+ yards w/ Tampa Bay? Also, is there much chance that Stafon Johnson gets on the field this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

They said it was a mistake, obviously. I doubt Johnson makes the team. Johnson, Ringer, Harper.

Geoff (Orlando)

What percentage of questions do you answer in these chats?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Can't tell you. Can tell you we're at 94 questions now.

Bill (Houston)

Does Houston have shot a Nmandi Asomugha?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Will it spend? If it'll spend, sure.

JJ (Minnesota)

Do you think it's foolish to give the south instantly to the Colts? Doesn't Houstan have a legit chance to take it from them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Based on what? Houston didn't even finish second last year. What has Houston done to close a 4.5-game gap?

Mike Reinfeldt (Nashville)

Any chance I can ship William Hayes, Jovan Haye, and Sen'Derrick Marks to Philly since all of these guys was Wash's big idea. I'll take a 5th for all of them right now!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

William Hayes is a good player who will be a factor this year.

Ray (Miami)

Any news on the status of Kevin Thomas' injury, the Colts' third round pick from last year? I feel like our defensive backfield might have been much more effective with him, though we wouldn't have gotten Justin Tryon...who was a bargain for a 7th rounder.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Tryon was a fantastic addition. Polian's mentioned Thomas in a way that suggests he'll be fine for camp.

Leon King (se. GA)

Texan front 7: A) an interesting group with diverse talents providing maximum flexibilty or B) a mish-mash of pieces/parts, square 43 pegs being forced into round 3-4 holes?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I lean B. Do you listen to Kings of Leon?

JJ (Minnesota)

Should the teams in the nfl fear the Packers? Why or why not?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Why wouldn't you fear a defending champ that's not suffering major losses?

David (NYC)

Thanks for the article about Tom Moore, although it definitely saddened me. Has Irsay or Polian (or even Moore himself) given any more information on why the sides parted ways?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

When they do, I'll certainly write about it. Moore no commented Phil Richards.

JD (Houston)

With as many D packages that Wade can put together, how many offenses will be kept guessing. Also do you think this will give offenses nightmares when preping for games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

What throws offenses off about a 3-4 is they don't know who the fourth rusher is. The Texans' fourth rusher will be Mario Williams 98 percent of the time. The fifth rusher will be the question, I guess. Will they confuse more? Sure. So much that offenses will crumble? I doubt it.

Kevin (Scranton, PA)

When does Gabbert get his first start?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

November.

JD (Houston)

Who will have the best Rookie impact for the Texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Brooks Reed.

Chris (Indianapolis)

I know you'd pencil Diem as the opening day RT, but who else do you think will compete for the job? CJ? Link? (that is if Ijalana ends up inside)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

If Ilijana ends up inside this year, I would think primary competition for Diem is Link. I think CJ either goes inside or is sixth.

Jeff (Utah)

Hey Paul, how does one get your job. Talk about the greatest job in the world. Chat once, maybe twice a month and re-post stories that everyone else does for you. You have it made man!!!!!!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Yes, today's column on Houston's defense tackles is cut and pasted. I did no reporting on it whatsoever.

matt (nap-town)

what is the deal with tom moore giving rex ryan red zone offense pointers recently? what gives???

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

First off, the report said Moore had been invited. It didn't say he went or went yet. His contract ran out and he's no longer employed by the Colts, as I have written. He can do what he likes.

Meatloaf (The Boardroom)

(weeping) Hey PK buddy, will you tell me how to deal with this John Rich madman?... (weeping) .... He's really hurt my feelings.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Turn your back and put seven miles between you and him.

Michael (Florida)

PK, based on my investigation, i found that you answer approximately 30% of all questions asked. Am I accurate? Would you even admit it if I was?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I'm chatting and don't have my math assistant handy. I will trust you. Why wouldn't I admit it if you're accurate?

Brian (VA)

Do you think the workload the Titans are giving CJ will make his career way shorter than if he had more help on Offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I think you use up a back now and worry about later later. Don't look to conserve or save.

JD (Houston)

What vet DB would be the most realistic for the Texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Johnathan Joseph from Cincy, maybe?

Leon King (se. GA)

Ayers was projected as a 3-4 OLB...do you see TN using him as a SLB or DE or hybrid (SLB on rushing downs, pass rusher on passing downs)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

A SLB who plays on or near the line most of the time.

kyle (tennessee)

when does locker get his first start?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Week 7.

Hair Club for Men (Nashville)

New player in artificial turf business could spark price war. What is your take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

No matter how inexpensive, I ain't buying what you're selling!

Josh McDaniels (STL)

My boss gave me lots of time to screw up...and boy did I...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

It was nowhere near the time Shack Harris got.

Bryan Harris (jacksonville, florida)

Do think the Jags made a mistake by going Offense with there first three picks and fulling trusting they will fill their remaining holes in post free agency?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

If they took their highest rated remaining players, they did the right thing. If they thought the linebackers were bad, then not forcing linebackers is smart.

Chad (H-Town)

I've heard alot about Wade Phillip's 3-4 defense upfront, will he change up cover schemes to give the CB more saftey help? Seems like last year those CB were left on an island on most plays without help over the top...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Was it scheme or was it bad safeties? Bad safeties has a lot to do with it. They need safeties. Still. Also more rush.

Tom (UK)

I understand the 3-4 gives the element of surprise in terms of who is the 4th rusher. With Mario clearly being that guy in Houston this has lead people to say the defense will be predictable. Was this not the case in Dallas though? And San Diego? People new Ware was coming and Merriman. Therefore it is still effective.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

So effective in Dallas that it got Wade fired. Yes, it worked for him in those places. It's about 11 guys, though, not one.

Brian (VA)

Which QB has better hair? Gabbert or Brady?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I recuse myself in discussions of hair.

JD (Houston)

Given the state of the lock out, how much do you think this affects the Texans, and what are their chances of bouncing back from the time lost?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

They are better off than Titans or Jags. Not in as good a shape as Colts.

Leon King (se. GA)

Jurrell Casey (NT) and Akeem Ayers (OLB) have the look of classic 3-4 players...is this an indication the Titans may be transitioning to 3-4 or just want to show different looks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

They'll mix things up more. But they aren't turning into a 3-4. They do not have 3-4 linebackers.

Kevin (Knoxville)

AFC teams need safeties, it seems. Which is most likely to go out and spend the money to get a solid starting FA safety?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

In the AFC South, I think Jacksonville is most likely to make a move that costs a lot.

Michael Scott (Dunder Mifflin)

Paul, I'm leaving The Office. You wanna take my place as the manager in the greatest paper company in the world?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I think I'd have a chance at being funnier than Will. What happened to him?

Chris (Indianapolis)

Do you think Kevin Kolb is really worth a first round pick? If so, Locker at 8 doesn't look like the bad of a value some are calling it.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I think Kolb is going to be good, and can be good pretty quickly. If you have no quarterback, I wouldn't argue against you spending a first rounder.

Chad (H-Town)

Would you project Brandon Harris as the #2 CB this year, or the nickel back to end the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

If Quin is going to safety, than Harris should be No. 2.

amybones (Nashville)

across the AFC South, what positions do you see as greatest free agency needs for each team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Texans, Jaguars, Colts: Safety. Titans: Quarterback.

JD (Houston)

If the Texans don't make the playoffs Kubiak is gone. In a dream scenario I would like to see him stay as OC and get a new head coach. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

He's not going to stay in a place where he was head guy to not be head guy.

Chris (Indianapolis)

If we're throwing out hair questions, I'll throw this out- better Coen Brothers movie, Big Lebowski or No Country for Old Men?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Dude, I like funny. So Lebowski.

Ed Houchuli (chat ref)

nice clean chat today, guys! Not alot of VY questions...keep up the good work!

JD (Houston)

Will Matt Shaub ever be elite?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

All a matter of whether he can be more clutch. If he can be, he can be.

Chris (Indianapolis)

How many games do you see Blair White starting next season? If any.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Ideally zero.

blake (bay city, tx)

do you have any knowledge of who will be the kickoff/punt returner for the texans? is holliday getting another shot?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Yes, he will be at the front of the line, I expect.

MB (Baltimore)

Do you think Bob Sanders will break Colt fan hearts and be effective this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

In four or six games, sure.

Ryan (Rochester, NY)

What kind of production do you think is realistic to expect from Delone Carter in his first season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

If they hand him the ball at the goal line a lot, he could score a bunch of TDs.

Jeff (Jax)

Since the Jags did little to improve their defense, does this mean: (A) Del Rio got another year because no one could be expected to make the playoffs with that defense or (B) the Jags plan on spending huge in free agency to get a safety and maybe a linebacker?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

They've said they'll add two to four defenders. Now I don't know that they're all going to be huge dollar guys.

JD (Houston)

how do you think Arian Foster will play this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

He was no fluke.

stu (va)

tenn has a good enough line to protect locker from the get go... THROW HIM IN THERE AND LET HIM LEARN ON THE JOB

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

I tend to feel the same. But it's not always the best way.

Scott (CT)

Hey Paul, when Young leaves the Titans and is signed by a non AFC South team will you finally tell everyone why you hated the guy so much, kind of like how you did with Adam Jones?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I don't hate him. And I've spelled out why I am down on him: He's not accountable, he thinks things should come easily to him and that anyone who dares question him is a hater, he's immature, he's coddled by people close to him, he seems soft, he can't throw a screen pass, he struggles to repeat a play call in the huddle, he cursed out his coach in front of the whole team.

Ryan Johnson (Houston, TX)

As opposed to Baseball where the commissioner is supposed to be impartial (or at least originally). Was that the intention in football? Or is the commissioner supposed to be the owner's rep?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

He's never been employed by the players.

Andrew (Nashville)

Do you really believe the Titans have a good O-Line. I think guys like Amano and Harris are better suited as all purpose backups. Did they not try last year because of alternating quarterbacks and Johnson thanking twitter instead of his teammates for his award?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

The interior is overrated, but I expect it to get better. The tackles are excellent.

Adam (Cookeville)

Do the changes to the kickoff rules make a future "Music City Miracle" play impossible. A chance to win until the bitter end is one of the best things about football.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Minimal impact.

Ryan Johnson (Houston, TX)

What do you see the depth order being for RB this year for the Texans? Obviously Foster is 1. But will they give Tate number 2 or does Ward still have that position? And what will happen to Slaton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Slaton's probably in trouble and his neck may be an issue. I'd expect it would start Ward two and Tate three. But there is room for movement.

The Dude (Goin with the flow)

Alright dudes and dudettes, me and Paul gotta meet Walter over at the lanes to do a bit of bowling... Stay cool. The Dude obliges.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

The Dude has spoken. Thanks for coming. Hope to see you again soon.
