Good Day Andrew!!! Not that i don't like having you but where's Wall-E?? Anyhow I was wondering who do you think would/could be available for the Yankees to trade for by the Trade Deadline?? Thank you
Thanks, Wally has the day off. I've looked into this a little bit, whom could be available and right now I think the trade market could be slim. There are a lot of teams in contention (like Cleveland, for example) that weren't expected to be. That could take a guy like Fausto Carmona off the market.Right now, I would list Brian Cashman's shopping list as an elite starting pitcher, a lefty specialist and maybe a corner outfielder.
When Phil Hughes returns what will his role be? Since Bartolo Colon and Garcia and pitching well.
The plan is to have Phil Hughes return to his role. The Yankees are certainly not giving up on him, but he has to regain his fastball first and until that happens he is sort of off the board. They would love to have the problem of too much pitching. Usually, this stuff plays itself out and with the age on Colon and Garcia it likely will.
Hey Andrew. I know it's still relatively early, but with Posada struggling and Martin being hot and cold, is there any chance Jesus Montero sees the majors this year?
Matt:Montero could be in the majors this year, but there may be a better chance it is with another team. For all his hitting ability, my sense is the Yanks will deal him. They have tried to twice before for elite starters (Halladay and Lee) but failed to. They like him, but defensively there are question marks.
Hey Andrew! How long will Soriano possibly be out for? If so, does Joba set up in the eighth and Robertson stays in the 7th inning?
I don't think Soriano will be out. He seems to have these type of little injuries tha prevent him from pitching. He said he was OK, but he just wanted to have an MRI. It was sort of wierd. But I don't think it is serious.
Is there any chance the media and fans will cool the "He's done" or "He's back" conversations that come with Derek Jeter's every streak, odds are against him ever being what he was in 09 but I'm guessing the odds are he is better than his 2010 numbers, maybe some tempered expectations are in order?
No chance.Dissecting Jeter is the new A-Rod thing to do. Your overall point is well taken, Jerry, that baseball is judged by big samples, unfortunately, twitter, blogs, radio, TV, etc. demand instant analysis and that is always changing. So Jerry, I'm assuming your Yankee fan, enjoy that he is BACK. Well, until an 0-for-4 tonight when he will be DONE again.
Who are the untouchables in any trade deal for a front line starter? Jesus, Manny, Brackman....no-one? Will the Yanks' eventual move be for a front line starter, or a middle/back of rotation type?
I would say Manny Banuelos is the closest thing the Yankees have to an untouchable. Bettances would probably be next.I think Cashman would deal Montero, Brackman and anyone else in the right deal.Manny B, I'm not sure if Cashman would trade him in a Felix Hernandez deal. They love that kid.
How long do the Yanks give Posada to hit and from what you hear does it appear he could be finished?
I think he will get to the end of this month before he loses some playing time. That's a guess. He needs to start hitting soon to prove he can DH and is not done, because ultimately the Yankees need a little production from the DH spot.
Soriano has little injuries? Try 550+ days on the DL over 7 years due to 2 season ending ELBOW surgeries.
Yes. He also doesn't seem to like to push things, which could be a good thing.
Hello Andrew. 1) Do you think the Yankees are concerned about Montero's struggles in SWB? 2) Do the Yankees try to trade for a starting pitcher or would they give Betances/Banuelos a chance and trade for a bat?(Sorry if you got this twice, I think the main chat page is busted)
1) Well, it is not helping his trade vaule, that is for sure. 2) I do think that if Swisher doesn't get it going, the Yankees could look for a corner outfielder. I think it is third on the list, but I wouldn't entirely rule it out.
If Montero isn't a good defensive option, and it appears the Yanks have no one to fill the DH role (now and in the future), why no talk about him as the future DH?
Not a bad point, but most teams are moving away from full-time DHs and it would hurt his trade value if the Yankees just said he could be a DH in the future, that's it.That said, it is possible that could happen. Many scouts think he could be a special hitter. Some just think he could be pretty good. All believe he is a MLB hitter. (At least, that I've spoken with.)
Joba looks good. When do the Yanks start considering moving him back to the rotation and screwing him up all over again (considering that they aren't already).
Don't get me started. That's not happening. I think Joba should be a starter. Look at his career numbers. Off the top of my head, I believe he is 12-7 with a 4.18 ERA. I would like to see what he could do with a full chance. However, he is in the bullpen until he is no longer a Yankee or there is new leadership with the franchise.
A lot of people didnt like that fourth year on Posada and I think we're seeing why now. Do you think that fourth year was a mistake the Yankees could take back?
Brian Cashman was one of those people who didn't like the fourth year.Omar Minaya put a pox on both teams in NYC. Imagine if Omar had gotten Posada. That would be another contract the Mets would be dealing with.
If Jorge Posada doesn't improve his hitting what happens, you can't leave him on the bench since he would basically be a dead roster spot, he has no defensive upside, what do you do?
I would think he would be on the bench, but that is a very interesting question. I hadn't thought about that angle. Very good point. He would have no value.
Who do you think will be the First Yankee to have his Number Retired at the Brand New Yankee Stadium?
I would say Jeter.I don't think Paulie O is getting that honor. Who do you think?
Do you believe Derek Jeter's struggles are because of the hunt for 3,000 hits?
Age.But John, he is BACK now. At least today.
Joe Girardi recently downplayed the fact that the Yanks are scoring mostly on homers (he claims that runs are runs). Once the playoffs roll around and we face better pitching everyday, will our inability to hit for average hurt us?
Dead right, Chris.Girardi plays down everything. He doesn't like media issues. However, when you face really good pitching you have to be able to score in multiple ways.
Why hasn't Paul O'Neill's # 21 retired yet anyway? I mean, could anymore have had a more "True Yankee" Career than "The Warrior?"
Not sure, he had the longevity to have his number retired. Does he belong with those greats? He was was great, but was he that great?
What if anything, are Yankees people saying regarding Gary Sanchez? He is so highly touted but seems to be struggling mightily at "A" ball both offensively and defensively. For as much catching depth as the Yanks apparently have, it seems like most of these guys have major question marks.
Not to go all John Sterling on you here, but especially with prospects you never know. I would say Banuelos is the closest thing to the real deal. Even Mo Rivera told me he is the best Yankee prospect he has ever seen.
so whose your favorite all time yankee?
I liked Mel Hall as a kid, but found out later he was a really bad guy. I liked Mattingly a lot too.
What about picking up Beltran's salary and plugging him in at RF and DH? It wouldn't cost much in terms of prospects considering the Mets would be thrilled to dump the salary
Possible, not probable
Retire Paul O'Neill's number? This is becoming a joke. At this rate Yankee players will be wearing triple digit uniform numbers in 20 years. Enough already
Good point, Mark.
The Yankees can't retire every number but Bernie and Paulie were the type of guys who are all-stars but not HOF players. They are the guys you win championships with. For the record I say Pettitte is the first number retired in the new stadium.
Does HgH have any impact, in your opinion, if he should have his number retired?
Is Robbie Cano's plate discipline concerning? It is to me. Granted he is an elite hitter - but he swings at everything and it doesn't always work out for him (or the team). Take the walk Robbie!
It is a bit. He such a better player when he is disciplined.
Would you put Cano in a package that brought you King Felix?
How about this American League East! What do you expect from the other teams as the season progresses?
I think the Red Sox will be who we thought they were. The Rays will hang in, but faulter at the end.The O's and Jays could be a pain for everyone
Hi Wally,Do you see Manny B being recalled after the all star break if he continues his development? If Soriano goes on the DL, who takes over his role, Robertson or Joba? Thanks
Jack, this was an early question, but I wanted to get your hi Wally in here.To answer your question, Manny B could be the left specialist come the end of the year. That is a possiblity.
Brett Gardner has been really heating up lately. Do you think that has anything to do with the comfort of being back in the 9 spot? Do the Yanks dare move him back up?
I would move him back up if he keeps hitting. The better hitters should hit more. If he proves he is one of the better hitters. I would move him up
That's going to do it. Thanks for all the questions. Sorry about the ones I couldn't get to.Right now, on the site we have Bombers Beat with Curtis Granderson and my story on Reggie Jackson giving Derek Jeter a pep talk. I'll be at the stadium tonight. Again, thanks for joining me.
