Hi gang...Thanks for stopping by. Ask away...
Are you buying Zach Britton for the rest of the season?
Yes, to an extent. Look, he's getting lucky with both his BABIP and his strand rate -it's 83 % - and he's not gonna strikeout a ton of guys. BUt. he's a talented young pitcher. I buy him as a good starter for AL only, but not as a consistent 10-12 team mix league play
you guys are batting 1.000 on not showing up today, we should rename the chat "The Chicago White Sox Offense"
Is there some way you can prove that you are the real Matthew Berry and not intern posing as him?
Hmmm. Yes. I will tweet a pic of me right now. How's that?
I know it is high risk, high reward, but what are your thoughts on Peavy?
Exactly that. More risk than reward, too. Too injury prone, hasn't shown me anything consistent in the AL, now he's in a 6 man rotation... Worth picking up but not someone I am dropping anyone good for or trying to trade for.
Giving up Berkman (assuming no serious injury) for Uggla and Marcum?? Should I be racing to click accept???
Depends on team needs and who you have to drop to roster the extra guy - that's how you have to analyze thae deal. But... I'd do that deal because I still believe in Uggla, but I don't actually believe you are selling high on Berkman - I ranked him 13 going forward.
Just tweeted the photo. www.twitter.com/matthewberrytmr
Name Game w/Hosmer:SmoakMorneauWallaceFreeman
Morneau. Still believe
My issue with you has been that you tend to 'make points' with your rankings / mocks. The other year you took Kemp over braun in a espn expert mock even though you had braun higher in your rankings. You later described it as you wanting to make a point about how good you thought kemp was. Now in these rankings you put Berkman over A-Gon, and i honestly think you really do not believe Berkman is better. in todays TMR you describe it as "more a statement on me believing in Berkman". You can believe in berkman w/o putting him higher than the elite options at the same position. u always make me laugh on the podcast, and i enjoy your work, but cmon man. ur all over the place sometimes.
I actually think I am NOT all over the place - think I am fairly clear about how I feel about certain players, regardless of whether you agree with my conclusions. And what's wrong with "making a point?" I feel that's part of my job - identifying players I feel strongly about one way or the other and showing where I would draft/rank them in regards to others.Specifci to Kemp / Braun.... the mock and my rankings came out a decent amount apart from each other - sometimes, when more research becomes available or I'm presented with new information, my opinions change on players. And in that case, should I keep my mouth shut so I'm not "all over the place" or say "Hey, this is how I now feel?"As for Berkman... I would take him over A Gonz (assuming no injury) for rest of year for the reasons I discussed in column.
Charlie Morton -- Really awesome or just kinda awesome? Thoughts on how he'll do the rest of the way?
Kinda awesome. Sinker is legit - we've been talking about him on podcast since the second week. Won't strike out enough guys to be really awesome but yes, I believe. Listen to today's pod - Nate and I discuss him in detail
Hey Berry! You wrote a really interesting article this past football season, stating the statistical chances of making the playoffs or winning a league after a subpar start. Would you be able to write something like that for us head-to-head format players who might have started the season poorly? I'm 1-5 and wondering if I should start thinking about 2012- the statistics might help mine and others' decisions. Thanks!
Good idea for a column. I'll try and look into that for next week. It's tough because there are multiple ways to play h2h baseball, so it's not ideal, but I'll look at it.Either way, keep playing. Much easier to make up ground in head to head than roto baseball
How long does this Jorge Posada thing drag on? Is it worth keeping a C who only plays vs RHP or is it time to dump him for a Yadier Molina type?
I don't care how long it drags on. He's done. Yes, rather have Yadier and many, many other catchers than him.
I'm up any day now, right?
Looking like soon, but weeks, not days is last I heard.
Do you foresee the Angels switching closers anytime soon? Walden is faltering...is Downs going to get the call soon?
I think Walden gets the next save op for Angels. He's who the want to take the job and Scoscia usually has a long leash (though not with Rodney earlier, so...). Think he's shaky but still the guy for now.
you must see Crawford having a monster second half ?
Fix your tie Berry! We're important people and expect you to dress appropriately.
You really aren't and no you don't. Which is why I love you.
Bottom Fishing.... I need to replace David Wright from a Fee Agent Pile. Greg Dobbs or Justin Turner. Concerned about playing time before Wright comes back. Any thoughts?
Hey Matt, what do you enjoy more, Fantasy Football or Fantasy Baseball, and is one easier to analyze than the other?
Baseball easier to analyze - more stats, larger sample size, player performance is less dependent on teammates. (A WR can be awesome but if QB can't get him ball etc... A baseball player controls more (not all, but more) of his own destiny.I prefer writing and discussing football more, though, because it is all geared towards that weekend's games. Makes it easier to focus, etc
What do you expect from Broxton for the rest of the year? Will he get his job back and be effective?
Yes, he'll get a nother shot and no, I don't expect him to be effective.
Also, if I had to pick a LAD "closer" right now, I'd say Jensen, but there's a lot of guys. Padialla can't get healthy.
Matt - Polanco is quietly ripping this season - how long until he's lying on his back in the dugout for a month?
I'm actually buying this somewhat. He's not a "sell high" to me
who will have a better season from this point on ..pena or hosmer??
Rather have Hosmer
Any ideas on how to take some of the wildness of FF out of the playoffs? I was 1st place regular season 2 years in a row, and bounced out 1st round of playoffs both years? Do a 2 week head-to-head matchup in playoffs?
ESPN standard leagues have 10 teams, 4 playoff teams and each playoff week is a two week playoff for exactly that reason. Come play on ESPN and you'll be fine.
I'm the greatest star wars character ever. what do you say about that?
Totally disagree. Among the Star Wars Characters I liked more than Jabba?Yoda, Han, R2, Boba Fett, Obi Wan, Chewbacca, Lando, weird green guy in Cantina, stromtroppers 12-16...
How awesome am I?
I ranked you 7th for the rest of the year and I might have been too low.
My son is on pace for 20+ bombs... you buying that the power is real and here to stay?
I am not. Breakout year is legit, but power is not (20% HR/FB is unsustainable)
hi matt you starting chachin tonite?
Which outfielder are you more concerned about Car-Go or Alex Rios??? I have both manning my outfield...
More concerned with Rios, who has had batting avergae issues before. CarGo will be fine...Ultimatly think both guys will be fine but if I'm picking one, it's Rios
I've got the Death Warrant on Twelve Systems!
I guess we'll agree to disagree on that but since thats out of the way how about answering a fantasy question for me. What do you see from Pagan rest of season. Him or a Jackson
Jackson for speed, Pagan for everything else
How about a quick solo episode of "Hard Justice" (Who needs Nate, anyway?). I know you maintain that vetoes should only be used in the case of collusion -- but how about in the case of many, many bad trades made with the one or two people who are in the league but don't know much, if anything, about baseball? For example: Carl Crawford straight up for Matt Joyce (one of many). Can the veto be used to 'protect' a player from themselves?
No, the veto should not be used to "protect" from himself.... Either don't invite him in the league anymore or learn to live with it. We had a rule in one league where you could only trade with one other team twice in a season to prevent guys from "going to the well" too many times, but ultimately, if he keeps losing and doesn't want to leanbr from it, that's on him. Stop complaining and start offering him trades
Greedo, wasn't that the green guy's name Han shoots?
That souunds right.
Rajai Davis is running all over the place and Farrel seems to love the running game. Do you see Davis' number's as Podsednik or PodVader?
Said it before, will say it again: monster year coming for Rajai Davis.
You high on Jose Tabata starting the season...Time to cut him, or hold on?
I'm hganging tough with him.... He's young - he'll figure it out. Skills are there
What do you think of Brantley? Solid across the board, or go with Ludwick?
Like Brantley a lot
Best. Twit Pic. Ever.
American Idol and Star Wars are lame. Arent there any other pop culture references?
In this chat so far? No
Jay Bruce has 2 bombs today = 10 for the year? I drafted him on YOUR recommendation.... what do you think?
That he's making me look good.
Damn u are really slow and bad at this chat thing.....
I'm bad and slow at most things.
Can you find me? Will Nick?
Think power will come back but am legitimately concerned about average... he hit like .219 a few years ago...
Did Francisco Liriano turn a corner in his last start?
Good start, but I need to see a lot more. It was the Mariners.
I'm starting my internship at ESPN June 8. If you need me to cover any chats or the podcast for you just let me know.
You're a peach
Hey Matt...Im going into my senior year here at UCSB. How do i get a job being your intern?
Talk to Matt. Actually, I don't get to have an intern - not sure if any talent do.... But you can apply at espnjobs.com and I'm always happy to meet with interns / PA's / etc to give advice
Which NFL Rookie will have the biggest impact fantasy wise and would Ryan Matthews of my Chargers be a good guy to draft?
Depends on where folks shake out but right now I say Daniel Thomas in Miami. Yes, I could see Mathews as a post hype sleeper... We know SD can run
I teach typing classes if your interested. I'll have you at 80 words per minute in a month.
Typing isn't the issue. It's scrolling though all the questions to find appropriate ones. Lots of guys will post the same question like 30 times so it takes a lot of time to scroll through - it only shows me ten at a time on a screen.
currently have kimbrel, should i target venters in a deal to have both in case of a closer change?
Depends on league size and who is out there on waiver wire, plus how's your closer depth if you lose Kimbrel. But yeah, we also discussed on pod this morning. Venters has been ridiculous...
Wade Davis or Hell boy?
Don't LOVE either, but I'd say Hellickson. Davis just isn't striking anyone out and is getting a bit lucky
I share your luv for Tabata, but Rios just was dropped - gotta make the switch, no?
you always waste the last 15 minutes of your chats with non-fantasy questions! Come on!! Answer this one: Matt Joyce, Michael Brantley, Delmon Young - rank them for the rest of the season...
I just ranked 250 players for the rest of the season yesterday. All 3 are in there. YOU come on.
Ok gang, I have to run. Thanks for stopping by! be sure to check out my top 250 ranks - I see many "Please rank" questions in here... most of them can be answered by looking at that list.
It's espncareers.com NOT espnjobs.com
