Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

What's up Folks? Great mood here. Wish there was more to talk about-This Lockout Needs to Stop!-but I am all about talking football today.

Jeff (Nashville)

We're ranking helmets now...guhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Yeah, I feel ya. I can't say that I envy my bosses job of filling the NFL page right now. And...I am glad they didn't ask me to be an expert analyst on this one like they do on the positional rankings!

Ryan (Va)

Matt if the Skins were to land CB Nnamdi and NT Franklin in free agency how good could you see the unit being?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Exceptional. I would assume that they would lose Haynesworth and Rogers in that scenerio. But still, that is what they need. Possible Top 10 D. I like it. Can they pull that off?

Jonny (DC)

Hey Matt does Logan Mankins fit Shanny's offensive scheme? If he does the Skins could really use him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

I actually think Mankins fits every scheme. Tremendous player.

Nathan (DC)

Can Dallas make the playoffs this year? They'd probably have to win the division--I doubt any wildcards will come from the East.

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Not sure why you say that. Could certainly see 2 teams coming from the East. But I do think Dallas can be a contender for sure. Expecting a huge year from Romo. They really need to be aggressive in free agency though with their poor secondary. I am guessing that they will be-but who knows. Might need a S and CB.

cam memphis tn [via mobile]

what do u the the tn titans will do this season for the qb position..? resign kerry collins to mentor jake locker?? or throw the rookie in and see what happens?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Well, they HAVE to bring in a vet in some capacity. Just have to. Collins? I would prefer to see them bring in a guy who moves much better than Collins-more similar skill set to Locker. But this lock out sure isn't helping any rookie QB's chances of starting Week 1.

Saints Fan (New Orleans)

Can Darren Sproles effectively replace Reggie Bush?? He seems like a similiar fit scheme wise and healthier/more productive

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Sorta. But if Bush does leave, I tend to think that NOrls doesn't go sign another RB. They just have SO much invested in that position right now. As for Sproles vs. Bush-Sproles is certainly more reliable. But Bush is the better receiver. Can run almost the entire WR route tree. That is gold I tell ya Jerry.

Alex (Maryland)

How do you see the Redskins backfield shaping out? Looks like it could be a heavy dose of the running game for Washington this season.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Will have to be. And knowing Shanny and considering what he has to work with, I wouldn't count on one guy getting a huge workload. Hot hand approach. I am not high on any of their RBs, but they do have guys that fit his system.

Eric (Chicago)

I will say that the fans got #2 wrong in the NFL helmet rankings, the Packers are hideous (green and yellow is like moldy cheese). Matt, do the Bears re-sign Pisa and Olin this year? Should they?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

I like Iwoh quite a bit, but they do need to add another LB to at least compete for playing time on the outside. Is that Pisa? I could live with that, but he doesn't really excite me. Kreutz-like the rest of Chi's OL-didn't play well last year. How healthy was he? His toughness/experience/leadership are all very valuable here though and he could keep the group on the same page. So, I guess he is worth more to the Bears than any of the other 31 teams. But he is clearly declining. Can't invest too much in such a guy.

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

"Looks That Kill" Crue...very loud

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Do you see Vince Young as a starter in the league this year? Would a team with a below-average O-line benefit from his skill set?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

At best, I would consider VY as a guy who could compete fairly with another QB (maybe a rook) for Week 1 playing time. But he worries me for sure. Work ethic? Toughness? Accuracy. Your point is valid about teams with so-so OLs though-esp in the running game. Having him behind center opens up a ton of room for the RB. Just ask C Johnson.

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

"Yankee Rose" David Lee...I Geniused a VH tune to start the chat. Going strong today.

EJ (Madison)

Matt-Awesome job with your work here. What are your thoughts with Cullen Jenkins and his options for free agency. Wouldn't he be a tremendous fit for Denver or Seattle? Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Love Jenkins. Like Mankins, he fits everywhere. Great interior pass rusher on throwing downs-for any team. Real good move 5T in a 3-4. And could be a heck of a strongside DE in the 4-3..maybe even a 3T. Love him. Actually, I would buck the trend if I were GBay and would show Jenkins the money.

Jason (San Francisco)

Vince Young is better than Jason Campbell... imagine him under center in Oakland? The Deep ball is there the movement is there... Why not?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Hadn't thought of that, but you are prob right. It is a Raiders-type of move too. Not a similar player to Campbell, but how about entering camp with Campbell, VY and Gradkowski? One of those guys might hit.

Mike (Brooklyn)

MW, what happens to Big Barry Cofield? Sign and trade with STL for a 2nd rounder?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Sign and Trades don't really happen in this league. I think he becomes a free agent and makes a fortune somewhere. STL sure makes sense. Denver as well.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

"Flying High Again" Ozzy

Ryan (San Diego)

How do you like Todman out of Uconn to replace Sproles in SD? I love that he never fumbles and looks like a steal in the 6th round. Kinda like when the Chargers got Sproles late in the 4th

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Would much rather have Sproles though. Todman is a more straight line runner than Sproles. And runs higher-with less leverage and power. Also not nearly the reciever or returner. Still, you had to expect a drop off there.

Shawn (Detroit)

Nooooooo!!! No Vince Young in Oakland...Ill take my chances with Campbell and a team that wants to pound the ball and control the clock...plus that front 7 on defense will keep them in games...

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

I hear that. But VY would open up room in the run game. If he doesn't work out in camp, you stick with Campbell. Not the worst fit for VY. Still, I like him in Philly as Vick's backup.

Kevin (DC)

Do you think John Beck could be a decent Qb? He's had time to learn the system and study. Would he be a better option over Grossman?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Not a fan. Not a believer. Haven't seen anything from Beck at this level to get me at all excited. And I think he has a very average (at best) skill set. And he entered the league as an overaged rookie. But is he better than Grossman? Perhaps. Coin flip there....but that isn't exactly a huge mark in his favor either.

Mitchell (NYC)

For Giants D which one would be a better signing for SOLB - Quincy Black or James Anderson and why?? They need a dynamic SOLB very badly!

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Black is the better player and TBay would be nuts to allow him to leave. But Black is much more of a WLB type than SLB. Anderson is a real good fit.

Tim (Florida) [via mobile]

Do you see the steelers signing any defensive backs to improve the secondary?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Yeah. Will either be Ike or a comperable free agent CB. I would bet they spend for one guy only though.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Is it actually foolish for the Eagles to trade Kolb when it's possible? Vick has not shown he will last a whole season, and that team has Super Bowl aspirations...

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

That is why I mentioned VY. If they moved Kolb, they would need to add a vet who has some pedigree/experience. I think Kolb's contract is up soon though-so they might have to deal him now to get anything substantial in return.

Jason (Santa Cruz, CA)

Hey Matt - How long till you think Colin Kapernik is SF's starter? What does he bring to the table?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Really high on him. Cincy should have taken him. Smart guy with a ton of ability. Not a terrific fit in the WCO, but I would bet that Harbaugh is smart enough to taper his playbook to Kapernick's abilities. Again, the lockout really hurts rookie QBs, but I bet it isn't long until he goes past A Smith.

Zack (CT)

Do you think Dalton's arm strength will be able to utilize Green's explosiveness?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Not a believer at all in Dalton's arm strength. Huge problem to me-esp in that area of the country with weather. But I do think he is able to get the ball downfield if he has room in the pocket to load up. Just can't make the tight throws or generate enough RPMs when conditions are not ideal...and that is a problem.

Scott (SF)

How about Reggie Bush to San Francisco? Didn't he and Alex Smith play in high school together? He'd be a good fit there - circa Roger Craig in the old school West Coast offense. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Not terrible. Could complement Gore pretty well. Although, I think that is what they drafted Hunter to do. I do see SF's O needing one more big play weapon though-preferrably at WR.

Tim (Florida) [via mobile]

Do you see the dolphins being a playoff contender next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

I can tell you this, I will pick the Dolphins' D to be one of the top 3-5 in the entire NFL next year. And I think they were very smart in surrounding Henne with the pieces he needs. So, contender? Maybe. But doubt they actually get into the tourney.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What do you think of the rumors of NE being unwilling to move down because they thought they'd lose Dowling? Did BB actaully gaffe that one?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

I do a lot of radio here in PGH and thought that Dowling would have been a real good pick for PGH at #31. So, I think there is credence to that and I think getting their man was the important factor there for NEng, esp when you consider all their trading down and all the picks they have accumulated in the process. Didn't need the extra pick.

Todd (Sacramento, CA)

Is Crabtree a legit #1? Or does SF need an Andre Johnson type?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Andre J is the best WR in football. EVERY team need an Andre Johnson type! Is Crabtree a #1? Not right now-for sure. Could become that type and this new O should be good for him. But they need a speed guy to complement Crabtree and open up a lot of room for everyone else.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

"Foolin" Def Leppard

Geoff (DC)

Does Tampa really have a shot at signing Nmamdi? I realize they have lots of money in a capped year, but this seems like wishful thinking.

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I think that is wishful thinking. Plus, they play a lot of Cover 2. In that scheme, you don't need superstar man to man CBs.

Nathan (DC)

Will the Patriots acquire a pass rusher, or look for one of their young guys to step up?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Probably both

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

I've heard varying opinions on how Von Miller's game will translate to the NFL level. Can you please give your 2 cents?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

REALLY wish he would have went to a 3-4. He will be great on passing downs in Denver. Coming off the edge with speed. But, while I think he moves well in reverse and can play the run well at SLB in the 4-3, that isn't what he does best. I would have taken Darius.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub with the Cards passing on Gabbert , does that mean that they believe in Hall or Skelton to develope behind a vetran QB? Not questioning the Peterson, just wondering.

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I think that means that they think they can get a deal done for Kolb. Or fall back on a guy like Orton or Bulger. Let Skelton sit and learn in the meantime.

Shaun (Rochester)

Hi Matt, What are your thoughts on what the Bills are doing?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Really liked their draft. Big bodies at their respective positions on D-and from big schools. Run stuffers. Should be able to play early. But still, this team needs much more work.

brett (ocean springs ms )

do u think the falcons moving up to get julio jones was a good idea ? And do u think it makes them more competitve ?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

It makes them more competitive for sure. He is a dangerous dude and fits their scheme real well. But, while I respect it, I am not in favor of this deal. Just too many picks to give up. Will eventually really hurt their depth at several positions. Will hurt things like special teams.

Shawn (Detroit)

What are your thoughts on Rolando McClain and Lamarr Houston in there 2nd year on the Raiders "D"??

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Not a huge fan of McClain, but he played better as the season went along. Should be a solid MLB, but never a super star. LOVE Houston. Pro Bowls in his future and he could become a very special player.

Randy (Grove, OK)

How would your rate what Scott Pioli has done to build the Chiefs roster in the last 3 seasons?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

With the exception of the T Jackson pick, I am impressed. Big tough team. The QB will always need to be protected/massaged, but they understand that and have a full complement of players around him.

Ryan (Egypt)

So you don't think Cofield stays with the Giants then?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Seems like a long shot now after the Austin pick. They are pretty loaded up front!

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Could the Patriots master plan be to continue stockpiling future draft picks until Brady decides to hang 'em up..then cash in and draft a true blue chip QB?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Brady won the MVP this year. Total stud. Playing tremendous. I don't think that is their plan. Mallet could be the heir apparent.

Zack (CT)

How much "bad football" do you think we'll see in the early weeks? Seems like with shorter camps it's going to many nagging injuries and mental mistakes from rookies/backups. Even refs will be affected I imagine.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

It scares me for sure. I would think it will affect the O more than the D...which could lead to a lot of clean shots on RBs and QBs with missed blocking assignments. That isn't good. Plus, the timing and feel for the passing game has to be off for many of these teams. Of course the teams with new QBs/Coaches/Schemes will be hurt most. Could actually really help the Indy/GBay/PGH/NEngs of the league

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

With Ben Tate coming back, Derrick Ward and Steve Slaton lurking, and Gary Kubiak always fickle, how confident would you be in Arian Foster repeating his success?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

I am guessing that you have FF in mind, eh? That's cool. He does worry me a little from that perspective-and remember he was an undrafted free agent coming out of Tennessee...mostly because of injury issues. Still, the dude is super productive, does it all well, runs behind a great run blocking OL and is on an O that is extremely threating through the air. How many other RBs can say that?

Ryan (Va)

I expect the quality of the game to be worse. Teams just wont have enough time to be organized it seems, with new coaches and scheme's, rookies, undrafted rookies, late free agency period. Gonna be very crappy product on the field.

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

We talked about this on the podcast Monday. The product probably will be worse. But-they are professional football players though. And will the average fan even know the difference until it catches back up to speed?

Steve (Bristol)

Although I am not thrilled with Shanny passing on the changce to get Gabbert, I am intrigued by the Kerrigan pick. Is this young workhorse what the skin's D needed to find their motivation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

His attitude is wonderful for this team. As his ability coming off the edge. But can he drop effectively enough in coverage to keep up with guys like McCoy, F Jones and Bradshaw out of the backfield? I doubt it. But I also don't think Wash will drop him often.

Aggie (TX)

If the Cowboys could pick up two of the following free agents which pair would be the best? Nnamdi, Huff, Cullen Jenkins?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

That seems unrealistic, but Nnamdi would of course be at the top of the list. FS is a much bigger need than DE, but Jenkins is a superior player to Huff. Still, I bet Huff ends up in Big D.

Nathan (DC)

How many questions are bombarding your screen at any given moment?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

There are ten that appear at a time. Honestly, I usually just grab the top one. Scan it real quick. If it makes sense, I do it. Like to keep the pace up in my chat room.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Probably too difficult to answer, but is Bo Jackson the best athlete you have ever seen? Of not, then who?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Of course that is too difficult, but if you would have asked me to name one guy, I bet I would have picked BO. Remember, I am only 37 though. Would have to be a guy after 1980ish.

Bryant (Milwaukee)

How do you envision the Packers using Randall Cobb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Well. VERY well. First off, they have a huge need at returner. He will knock that out of the park. Next, I see him doing some gimmick stuff (even a little Wild Cat) on O. End arounds. Direct snaps. Etc. Then, I think he will soon develop into one of the very best slot guys in the NFL. Great fit. Great draft pick. Love it.

Mike (San Diego)

M-Dub...you've been 37 now for about 3 years...when does it end?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

June 6th

Jason (Reading, PA)

Does Colon resign in PGH? What does there opening day starting 5 look like on OL?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

I think he leaves. Been told that he wants big money. He is a tough eval though in terms of what to pay him: Was great in 2009, hurt in 2010. Lingering injury affects? I don't know that answer. But I bet hanging with Ben in Georgia last off season doesn't help his cause. Starters left to right: Starks, Kemo, Pouncey, Gilbert, Adams. That is a lot of beef btw.

Ryan (Egypt)

The one player I worry about the Giants losing the most is Mathias Kiwanuka. Any idea how he's doing or his chances of staying with NYG?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Would bet his chances are slim. With Tuck, Osi and now JPP, there just isn't room. JPP is going to be terrific.

Kim Deal (CA)

DeAngelo Williams to Green Bay...what ya think? They run zone blocking, right? THat's what he excels in. I be he wouldn't be all that expensive. I know, I know...GB doesn't do that. Woodson!

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Would rather resign Jenkins. Don't see it happening, esp after using a 3rd rounder on Green. How scarey would that O be though? Wow

Josh (New York)

What are your thoghts on Barrett Rudd? Will the Bucs let him go in free agency and who does he fit best with?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

As I mentioned earlier, Black is a stud. He is the guy TBay needs to keep. Put Foster at MLB. Ruud is a fine player, but his stats overrate his overall value. Not special at all. Probably thinks he is worth more than he is.

Dan (NH)

Would Kiwanuka help the Patriots maybe?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

I like that. I like that a lot. First I thought of it. Well, I guess I didn't think of it. Actually, I am going to put that out on Twitter if you don't mind. See what kind of reactions we get. BTW-follow me at @WilliamsonNFL. Plus, Kiwi is a BC guy.

Justin (Minot,ND)

How do you think the Carolina QB situation goes?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Throw Newton to the wolves right off the bat. And the wolves win.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

2Pac or Biggie?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Led Zeppelin

John (DC)

Matt is there ANY hope for the Redskins this year? Other than hoping for Andrew Luck in the net draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

I just don't see it. Too many questions. Very little depth when the injuries hit. But...if they added Luck....wow

Chet (LA)

Matt, do you see an increased roll for Jordy Nelson in GB? Driver is a warrior, but can't go on forever and he had some injury issues last season. James Jones looks like he may be on the way out. Do you see Jordy being slated as the #2 opposite Greg Jennings with Cobb eventually taking over the slot from Driver? Man, this Green Bay offense is gonna be scary!

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Adding Finley is SO huge. Very scarey. Yes, I think Nelson starts. I bet Jones departs. I bet Driver hits the wall. I bet Cobb steps up. 11 Peronnel by Week 8 with a RB, Finley, Cobb, Nelson and Jennings. Big time.

Zack (CT)

Didnt you say Skins could have a Top 5-10 defense? No hope yet top 5-10 defense? Are you saying 6-8 wins or like 2-4 wins?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

They could have that type of D IF they signed Nnamdi and A Franklin! Two HUGE signings. REALLY doubt they land both of those guys.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

"I Don't Know" Ozzy..."You gotta believe in foolish miracles..."

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Okay Folks, Great chat...as always. Take care all. See ya next week.
