Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (2:00 PM)

Hi everyone. Let's do this.

Chad (Guam)

Why do so many people insist SB rings are the best way to measure a QB? A-Rod played great but the defense saved Green Bay's title hopes time and time again. It seems downright idiotic to say that Aaron would be any less of a QB if the defense was worse and didn't help the Packers make the Super Bowl (or even the playoffs).

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

Well, I think the idea is that at some point along the way, an elite QB should be able to elevate a team's performance. It's not often that a team wins the title with a mediocre quarterback. Usually they go hand in hand. Obviously there are a lot of other factors, and I don't think any less of Dan Marino for not winning a title. But Rodgers did what NFL people hope an elite QB will do: Elevate his team during a title run.

Joe (MI)

Is Matthew Stafford fat or strong?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Ha. I guess that's always a fair question when offseason weight gain is discussed. I haven't seen him personally, but from all accounts he worked hard to build up his upper body this offseason. It makes sense given his shoulder injuries. Maybe strengthening the area around the shoulder can help prevent future injuries.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the Best team in 2011 in the NFC North once the Lockout is Lifted?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:05 PM)

Hard to argue against the Packers for several reasons, but one of them is the fact that they've been in the same offensive scheme for going on six years and the same defensive scheme now for three years. Most everyone knows what they're doing. In a lockout environment, there will be a huge gulf between the teams that have stable programs and those that are starting over.

Nathan (DC)

How can the Vikings swing a deal for a new stadium when there is no CBA, no clear knowledge of league revenues, and the potential for no football at all this year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

All fair questions. I think they're hopeful of passing a contingency bill. Basically the state legislature would pre-approve many details and the project would sit tight until the lockout ends. I'm not sure if state leaders will be willing to do that, but that might be the best-case scenario for the Vikings.

Matt (NYC)

Hi Kevin,I'll avoid the angle of projecting desire and effort in the defending Super Bowl champs vs. up-and-coming team, in regards to the Packers and Lions off season schedule. Instead, I wanted to get your thoughts on how the Lions team workout might be indicative of a group that really believes they can be good this year and is excited to get the season underway.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:07 PM)

I think that's a fair interpretation. But hopefully most NFL teams feel the same way at this time of year. You would hope there aren't many players who are already convinced their team has no chance in 2011. I think it's a positive reflection of the Lions, but I'm not sure if it will make them better in 2011.

Nathan (Phoenix, AZ)

Two part question: Re-signing Chris Houston once/if FA begins... good idea or bad idea? And... would you consider him a top 15/20 CB?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Given their lack of depth at the moment, I think it would smart to try to re-sign him. I'm not sure if he is a top 15-20 cornerback, but at this point the Lions need a top 32-64 cornerback. In other words, someone who can start. I feel reasonably confident Chris Houston deserves to start in the NFL.

Omar (Rochester)

Hey Kevin, I'm so sick of hearing the stadium issues in this state and do you think are we gonna get past through this issues this year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

It's going to be tough. The legislature adjourns on Monday and the stadium bill hasn't been put before a single committee. We'll see.

Craig (Braintree/MA)

Ever get to meet Harmon Killebrew?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:11 PM)

Once. He was very friendly. We should all pass along warm thoughts to his family today.

Stephen (Chicago)

What happens first, the return of Favre Watch (cause we all know its coming) or the Players and Owners strike a deal?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

Well, I have total control over FavreWatch but none over the CBA negotiations, so it's not a fair fight.

Nancy (Loveland, Co)

I'm HUNGRY! and gave no lunch today. What is your favorite or perfect lunch Kevin?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

If it's free, it's me.

Mike (MIN)

so i know teams cant talk to players, but can teams talk to other teams about trades that wont take place til after the lockout is lifted?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

They are not supposed to be, no. This is supposed to be a so-called dark period. It has been, in more ways than one.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Whoops. Guess we had a heavy-fingered glitch there.

Donny D (Brooklyn)

What is preventing players from giving a copy of the playbook to rookies?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Typically players don't take their playbook home for the offseason. But that doesn't mean they can't share knowledge.

Jason (Michigan)

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

Well played.

thebaskett (NC)

Do think that Rice wanting to work out with Ponder and Harvin is a good sign that Rice wants to remain a Vikings. Or is it pure convenience cause he is in Miami.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

No, I think Rice knows there is at least a decent chance he'll be back in Minnesota.

Matt (St. Paul, MN)

Living in St. Paul and wondering I should pay through sales taxes for a stadium that's farther away from downtown St. Paul and where I live than the Metrodome. It's pretty crazy that the team and County are trying to ram this down our throats without even an attempt to sell it to voters here.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

That's one voice we really haven't heard from yet. The St. Paul mayor has sort of said he has reservations, but if there is outrage among the Ramsey County residents who would have to pay $350M or so toward this deal, I haven't heard it yet.

Steven (Alexandria, VA)

Kevin, did you see Rep. Paul Ryan's rips on Jay Cutler yesterday in Chicago?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

I did not. What did he say?

Mike (Dallas)

What are the odds Green Bay deals Matt Flynn before the trade deadline (assuming a season)? Could they get a first rounder for him, say if a team loses a QB to injury in week 3 or so?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

I think the odds go down the longer the lockout progresses. The difficulty of transitioning a new quarterback without an offseason is going to make it tough.

Mike Fl [via mobile]

What do you see the chances being of the NFL having another draft before a game is played? I was optimistic for a deal until I heard what Colinsworth said last week about Nov if at all!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

I've been of the mind that too much money is at stake to allow so many games to be canceled. But Cris Collinsworth is a lot more plugged in than I am.

Matt (Daytona Beach,Fl)

Do you see the Ford's making a play for Asogmua considering they almost traded up to get Peterson in the draft?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

I know a lot of people are putting those two things together. I have to imagine they have something up their sleeve at CB.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

If you played fantasy football, how good would you feel projecting JerMichel Finley as a top 3 TE?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

Only thing that could hold him back is health.

Bear Down (Ks)

Kev, could you beat Suh in a foot race?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

No chance in hell. I believe he ran a 4.9 or so at the combine. If I could run a 5.9, I would be happy.

Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay, WI)

Kevin, should I run for the Wisconsin Senate seat since Herb Kohl is retiring?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

That could interfere with your fall/winter job. And I'm pretty sure there is an age requirement. And I'll need to see your long-form birth certificate.

Kimberly (Wi)

Kevin, when and if there is a season what game are you looking forward to covering

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

Obviously Saints-Packers is going to be fun. Also looking forward to the Lions' MNF game.

Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay, WI)

But Kevin, I'd bring The Belt to the Beltway.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

There is also a dress code, sir.

Ryan (WI)

my grandma could run a 5.9. that is pathetic!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

I yam what I yam.

Frank (Chi)

What did Ryan say about Cutler? Can we get a link?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

Apparently it had to do with the economy needing four solid quarters of performance. It's on Fox News. I'm not making this up.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

For some reason I can't paste the link or the full quote. I'll do a blog post on it in a bit.

Nate (Fayetteville)

will christian ponder start for the vikings out of the gate?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

I really think they want him to.

Lewis (Flint Michigan)

Hanson or Raymer, who do the Lions go with at kicker? Age or youth?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

When it comes to kickers, I always go with age. There is no question about Jason Hanson from a mental standpoint. As long as he is healthy and can still kick, that's who I would want.

Geoff (Vancouver)

How long before you see the pack n favre making up?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

I think the Packers will be wary. It will take a few years before they're convinced he's retired.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Did you get the sense that if Mark Ingram was available to the Packers at pick 32, they were gong to bite?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

I thought it was an interesting possibility. TT really is unpredictable that way. But we'll never know.

Mike (Raleigh)

The First and Ten guys picked Detroit and Green Bay as the two places they would most like to watch "Hard Knocks." Where would you place it in the NFCN?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

I would watch no matter what, but I'd love to see the Bears behind-the-scenes, especially with the Jay Cutler dynamic.

Paul Ryan (WI-1)

At least I didn't fake an injury while delivering my budget proposal

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

Ouch.

Nick (Green Bay)

Packers scheduled their ring ceremony for June 16 - does that happen even with a lockout?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

From what I understand, it won't happen until after the lockout.

Darren (T.O)

Hey Kevin, If you had to pick a Franchise QB between Jay Cutler and Matthew Stafford, who would you pick and why?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

Interesting. Two imperfect answers, for sure. The biggest advantage Cutler has is that he's been unquestionably durable. To this point Stafford hasn't. If I'm only going by what I've see to this point, I have to go with Cutler.

Steven (Alexandria, VA)

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/05/17/chicago-bears-qb-gets-caught-crossfire-wisconsin-senate-race/

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

Thanks Steven. Not sure why I couldn't get that into my chat window here.

Jason (Missouri)

What are the odds of Minnestoa trying to move Peterson? By the time the could compete again he will be starting to get old. Minnesota is better off now with more Draft picks than a Star RB

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

I don't see it, but I've been very wrong before. All indications are that Leslie Frazier wants to build his offense around Peterson for at least the next few years. The only way it happens is if Peterson forces it through a holdout.

Jeff (Nashville)

Does a longer lockout make it more likely that James Jones comes back to Green Bay, less likely, or doesn't factor in?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

Post-lockout free agent rules remain the biggest factor. If he's an RFA, he probably comes back. As an UFA, he probably doesn't.

Nick (Green Bay)

On a scale from 1 to Power Ranking Helmet Designs, how ready are you to be through with this lockout?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

Power Ranking Helmet Designs... enough said.

Paul (Denver)

Why don't you just make this terrible chat into Lions, Packers, Vikes, and classless Cutler jokes?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

Booooooooooooo!

Aaron (Santa Monica ,CA)

Do you agree or disagree with the packers not having team organized practices?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

The worst thing they could do is force it. If it doesn't make sense logistically, players should just be left alone to do their work. I think there is some benefit, but I also understand if experienced players prefer not to. Ultimately I'm really not sold on how important these organized workouts are going to be in the 2011 season.

Mike (Raleigh)

Which rookie draft pick do you think will have the biggest impact on the upcoming season? My pick would be Mikel LeShoure.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

Rookies in general are going to be limited by the lockout. I could see LeShoure. I could see it being Randall Cobb in Green Bay. And if Christian Ponder starts 16 games for the Vikings, it'll be hard to ignore that.

Jon (DC)

Looks like Maynard may be on his way out. Based on his punting, that is not too surprising, but do you think his role as holder for Gould is under appreciated? The Mannelly-Maynard-Gould trio has been clutch.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

They have. But Robbie Gould is a pro. He'll adjust to another holder.

Jason Scholz (Ann Arbor, MI)

Hey, Kevin. If we have a season, and if we have a Week 1, is there a better match up of up and coming teams than Lions at Bucs?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

It'll definitely be fun and I'm giving strong consideration to covering that one. Their game last year was great.

Jeff (falling asleep)

Is talking about football without football simply getting boring to you or what? Man, can this thing end so we can see some real action out there in FA and trades...this sucks (not you, the lockout)

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

Well, it's testing our creativity. We're trying some different things on the blog. Some are working. Some are notzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Jason (Grand Rapids)

Who is the most exciting offensive and defensive player to watch on any given play in the NFCN?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

Tough one. Let me think.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

Can I go with Devin Hester on special teams?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

No? Ok, on offense I'll go with Adrian Peterson. He's done some amazing things the past few years. On defense, I'll say Clay Matthews. It's wild when you zero in on him and watch how he gets to the QB.

Matt FL [via mobile]

Don't sell yourself short Kevin, I think you could beat Suh in a race. If you had a 10 yd headstart and he was chasing you?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Oh, chasing? Then I think I would be motivated.

Paul (Denver)

Any news where and when the Bears will be working out together and who will be there?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

To this point, none. Caleb Hanie said on Friday that there were no plans. Jay Cutler said over the weekend that plans were "locked and loaded" but secret. So who knows.

Sam (De Pere, WI)

Does Bulaga eventually move over to LT, or is Sherrod locked in as the Packers' left tackle of the future?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

At this point, if Bulaga is working out fine at right tackle, let's see if Sherrod can handle left. That might be the way the Packers go.

Jake (Stevens Point)

So I'm just curious....do you do all of this chat session by yourself? or do you have minions working behind the scenes to help you find stats and type for you?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

All me in all its glory. I AM the minion.

Shawn (Philly)

What are your thoughts on Young beating out Burelson?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

Not going to happen as long as everyone is healthy. But Scott Linehan likes to use three receivers, so it might be a moot point. They'll both play a lot.

Will (Detroit)

If Nick Fairley proves to be just as good as he was in college, do the Lions win the North this season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

No, not just because of that. But they should be a playoff team if that's the case.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

Speaking of...

Jeff (Nashville)

It seems like a lot of people are already anointing Detroit as a playoff team. Can we slow down? Sure Fairley is great, but he is not the second coming of Suh or he would have been drafted top 5. Those two rookies they drafted on offense aren't even practicing right now. No secondary. Stafford hasn't proven he can last a season. They have two legit SB contenders in their division. I totally understand the excitement and agree they are heading in the right direction, but playoffs? C'monnnnnnnn...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

If you look back at our chats last year, people were saying the same thing about the Bears -- including me. The season is full of surprises. It's fair to be cautious, but the Lions do have some things going for them that they haven't had in the past.

Ed (Pa)

I get the feeling you are not buying the theory that the Lions will be noticeably better this year. True or False

Kevin Seifert
  (2:50 PM)

I think they have a chance, but they need to continue building up their defense.

KGB (everywhere)

Do you think the Bears offense matures under Martz before the defense ages into a weakness?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

A very good point. It might have to be 2011 or bust.

Nick (Green Bay)

Does Chester Taylor make an impact next year in CHI? Or is he officially washed up?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

Statistically, he had a rough year. But someone has to back up Forte.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Statistically, he had a rough year. But someone has to back up Forte.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Ok, a few more here.

Aaron (Santa Monica, CA)

Thats exactly how I feel these teams are not with they're Coaches and Coordinators. If they want to work out go for a 3 Mile run. It seems to me like organized team Practices are just like if me and My friends were to go out and play touch Football. Do you believe any of these teams are benefiting from this?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

It's not going to hurt anyone unless the travel and logsitics outweighs the benefit of the workout. Also, who knows what the credentials are of the private trainers leading these things. Again, I don't see a huge upside.

Sam (De Pere, WI)

I'm going to be very interested to Carimi versus Matthews in Bears-Packers games this year. I watched Carimi at lot while he was a Badger, and his biggest weakness seemed to be speed rushers like, oh, I don't know, CMIII. Thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

That's why some people think he'll end up at RT, with J'Marcus Webb at left tackle. But the Packers could line Matthews up over the RT if they choose. I'll reserve judgment until I actually see Carimi in practice/games.

Jesse (San Diego)

No Carimi as a big impact player? A bookend OT for the worst OL in the league last year won't have a big impact?!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

Usually we think of skill players for those kinds of designations. How do we judge the impact of an OL?

brett (miss)

does any team ask me to come and play in 2011

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

Hate to say it, but no.

Bear down (Ks)

All of the sudden you called the Bears 2010 season??? I seriously don't remember that happening.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

No, no, no. Wasn't saying that. I'm saying I was in the boat of people questioning whether the Bears would be good in 2010, much like some people are questioning if the Lions will be good in 2011.

Stephen (NJ)

You do realize there are divisions outside of the NFC North ..correct ??.....or is this a division specific chat ?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

It's a four-team league as far as I'm concerned.

Frank (Chi)

Its judged by if the Bears surrender the most sacks in the league again isnt it?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

How do we know if that's because of Carimi or the line calls or the other linemen or even Cutler? That's the problem, but I understand what you're saying.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:58 PM)

Ok everyone, thanks so much. Chat with you next week.
