Hey Folks-let's get this party started
Going to see my movie tommorrow?
Not sure when I will get to it, but I certainly will see it ASAP. Just bad about actually getting to movie theaters here. Like to hit Pause. Chill in my Lazy Boy at home.
Which team would you prefer to coach, having a four year window of reaching the Super Bowl, Ravens or Giants?
Hmmm...I guess the Giants. I trust the QB more. Would say they are younger on D. Not an easy call though-two of the top organizations in the league for sure.
Will the Broncos Contend in their division this year? and do the Chiefs have what it takes to win it again, because im doubting them your thoughts on the AFC west.
I don't see Denver as a contender in that division. I see it as a two horse race between KC and SD. KC looks to be quite improved-but their schedule is much harder. Not sure their record will reflect their improvement.
The Cars "Moving in Stereo" just came on the iPod...can't help myself but think about Fast Times and Ridgemont High. Tremendous movie.
Matt - love the chats. How essential do you think Reggie Bush is to what Sean Payton and Brees want to do on offense? If he leaves, is it a major shift of the gameplan? I would hate to see them vastly overpay for him, since he seems like more of a nice to have than a necessity to me....
He is def a luxory item-for any team. But he is somewhat eessential. There are a few players in this league who are just very difficult to label. For Bush, is he a WR or RB? Whateve the D labels him, Brees/Payton will do the opposite. NOrls is one of the best teams around to take advantage of such a weapon. Bush is great for them and they are great for him. Would shift things-and would make the personnel game much easier for the Saints' opponents-if Bush leaves. I bet he stays.
What do the Eagles do with Kolb, keep him or trade him?
Trade him. Can just too much in return. Gotta do it. Then you sign a veteran with some experience, but also some upside. Still love VY to Philly in this capacity.
Hard to use a weapon like Reggie Bush if he isnt on the field...
Well...that is an issue with this guy as well!
How does DJ Williams compare to Andrew Quarless? Do you think Williams will take over the #2 TE spot and if so, do you think it happens this season?
Quarless was questionable with his hands and was pretty inconsistent top to bottom. The talent is there though-and surely he will get more consistent in year two. He was only a rookie last year! But Williams is a much better natural receiver. But can Williams handle the blocking at all at this level? But in a way-like Bush-Williams might be one of those matchup problem type guys.
Is there any buzz around the league for Matt Flynn? and what might he command if the Packers decided to trade him?
In this case, I think I hold Flynn if I am GBay. Rodgers has had several injuries-not that Vick hasn't. But GBay doesn't really need any more pieces in order to be an elite team. So you hold onto #2 for now at least-and maybe go win the whole thing again.
Matt...Oakland went 6-0 in the division last year and you don't consider them a contender in the West?? Asomugha is a big loss but where is the digression??
Losing Nnamdi is massive to me-and Huff could be next to leave. Secondary is a worry for sure. REALLY like their front seven though and all in all, I think this D can be quite good. But the OL is a huge concern. And QB is an even bigger concern.
Do you see the Lions finishing with a better record than the Vikes this year? The Lions have a real shot at finishing second this year in my opinion, behind Green Bay. If they land Nnamdi, I REALLY like their chances.
The Bears were a final four team last year too ya know. But I do like Det's chances more than Minny's right now. Adding a stud CB (like Nnamdi) would be HUGE for this D of course. And then, yes, I could see a Wild Card birth for Detroit.
Would Steve Smith be a good fit on the Patriots?
For sure. I like it-a lot. Keeping SD though.
how are the cards going to use beanie wells and ryan williams in the running game for the cardinals?
Well, both have big durability concerns. I think if you look at it like "If we can get one of these two fresh and healthy at all times, then we are in decent shape". Plus, it could light a fire under Wells-he could stand to be a bit tougher in all regards. But this OL also worries me quite a bit.
Am I crazy to think Koi Misi is going to be a household name by week 8?
Nope. Esp opposite Wake. I wrote a Soon to be Stars article on Misi a few weeks ago-check it out. And btw-Miami's D is going to be awesome this year.
Is Cleveland Cursed?
If the NFL truly wants to become a better product it needs a developmental league for QB's which will provide security (to players and coaches) so it will eventually lead to at least a handful of team's having some enduring success. Thoughts?
Sounds wonderful on paper in a chat like this. In fact an entire "Minor League" system would be tremendous. Just not sure how to exactly make that work.
Better fit for 'Zona: Kolb or Orton?
Kollb. I just think he is the better player. And has more upside. I have some questions about him, but he would be a massive upgread for the Cards.
Matt - ive seen so many comments about where will Nnamdi land, and how they think thier team will land him (Detroirt, Boys, Wash, etc.) I think its pretty obvious the Eagles will land him, as they have a MAJOR hole at CB, the money to spend, and history of going after big name FA when they have a big need (i.e. TO and Kearse in the same year). They dont do it very often, but they will spend when a stud is availabel. Am I crazy, or just a biased Philly fan?
You are prob a bit biased! And you are right, everyone seems to think they will land Nnamdi. As soon as Philly passed on J Smith for Watkins, I thought the exact same thing as you. Adam has said that he fully expects Nnamdi to end up in the NFC East. And I could see Dallas or Washington getting very aggressive to land him.
Matty Dubs - running out of football questions to ask. So, let's say LeBron James is in the draft. What position would you see him playing, and how high would he go? Just based on what we've seen from him on the basketball floor.
I was at Pitt in recruiting when LeBron was at St. Vincents/St. Marys in Akron, which was an area that we recruited heavily. He didn't play football as a senior, but he did as junior-and I watched him. But, he wasn't nearly as massive and strong. He was a tall amazing athlete who caught jump balls. But you could also see that he realized that he might just have a future in some other game-basketball I think it was-and that he might not want to jeopardize his health on the football field. As for now, I would say a move TE like a Jimmy Graham. But I still don't want him trying to block James Harrison.
Do you think that the Rams need any further additions in order to make the playoff, and if so, then what positions need to be addressed?
One more guard would be great, as would a backup/complement to S-Jax. On D, another OLB would be great. Some secondary reinforcements as well. But that DL might make some problems go away. And Bradford will only get better. I don't see them yet as a contender in most divisions, but in the NFC West, they might be the favorite.
Did you see that the espn bloggers unanimously ranked Troy Palumala as the #1 defensive player? I know it doesn't mean much, but unanimous? Am I alone in thinking his coverage skills aren't as good as most think?
I was consulted by a couple of the bloggers on this and gave my Top 12 D Players on Twitter last week. @WilliamsonNFL by the way-check it out. But Troy was not in my Top 5. Injuries just are too big of a negative to me. I actually had Harrison over him too, as best Steeler D Player.
How big of an impact do you think Fairley has in Detroit? I think people are having Suh size expectations but I think they are going to be sorely disappointed.
Doubt he is Suh, but that DL is now SO deep and versatile. Can throw a ton of different looks at their opponent and will be able to keep Fairley very fresh to get the most out of his snaps.
Cullen Jenkins to the Ravens, what do you think?
He would be a tremendous fit in that T Pryce role for Balt. Big fan of Jenkins here.
Since I am sure someone will ask, here is my Top 12 Defensive Players rankings-and I will say, there is a lot of room for moving guys around on this list. I have not yet seen the bloggers list. 1 Revis 2 Ware 3 Harrison 4 Willis 5 Ngata 6 Clay Jr 7 Troy P 8 Nnamdi 9 Justin Smith 10 Peppers 11 Mario W 12 Reed
Can I win the Redskins starting job?
That is awesome. Laughing hard here now. Tremendous.
MW, saying Kolb is a huge upgrade for the Cards (over DA) is like saying Cindy Crawford is a huge upgrade over Roseanne Barr...Besides QB, the Cards desperately need pass rush from the LB corps...any notable free agents they should be looking at? What do you think of Mark Herzlich as a free agent pickup?
Good point on Roseanne. Herzlich should be quite sought after. No compensation. Would love to see him do nothing for a year and just totally recover-but not a Doc here. And yes, Zona needs huge OLB help. Lawson?
Daryn Colledge is probaby gone in GBay, which is cool because he is definitely the weakest link on an otherwise average/solid group. Would you slide Bulaga over to guard to take his slot, and get Sherrod in there at RT? One of them could slide out to LT when Clifton inevitably goes down this year. They do have some other options on the bench, but why not get your best guys in there?
They do have a lot of OL options right now. Didn't love Bulaga at OT last year, so that should be considered. I tend to think that LG spot is TJ Lang's to lose though.
Justin Smith is in your top 12? Please explain.
Tremendous all around football player. Does it all EXTREMELY well. Goes far too unnoticed. Pay attention to him going forward-you will be blown away.
Freeman or Ryan? With who you're starting your franchise?
Right now? Ryan. To start my franchise? Freeman. Very tough call, but I want Freeman. Just more ability-and very advanced for such a young signal caller.
Moss to Jets. How you like it?
Fine as a fall back option. I assume Holmes isn't going anywhere. But would much rather have Braylon. But-Holmes and Moss together? Is that a good idea? Sounds rather combustable to me. Plus, Moss only does one thing really well now-gets deep. Can Sanchez take advantage of that?
Where is Devin Mccourty on your list of top DB's in the league?
Wow. Would take some time to come up with that list off the top of my head, but I think he is tremendous. He and Haden were fantastic last year and I have no reason to think either was a one year wonder. Even after one year-top 10 CBs for both.
What happens to Braylon Edwards? What kind of salary would he command?
I bet he does better than many realize in free agency. That dude has some rare skills. And his drops were much better last year. Would love to see him in an O like SD. Wow.
Do you see the Bucs having the best defensive line in the league in 2 or 3 years?
Should be amongst the best. Check out the Scouts Eye article I did on the DLs in that division. I ranked them 3rd-for now. Quite a few really good ones out there though. Let's see how the rooks look first. But I love McCoy.
Now that Vick is dominant in the NFL and Newton was dominant in college, do you think QB's with the throwing and running threat will be the new era in the NFL?
No. It is a nice perk. A nice addition to their game. But if they can't throw very well first and foremost, then the running doesn't matter. And being dominant in college doesn't mean all that much to be in this discussion.
Do we see any consistency from Lee Evans this year?
Not sure why he would all of a sudden start now
what do you think of the lions passing on hbo's hard knocks?
TBay did too. Both are very young teams. There will be enough distractions and issues in getting teams up to speed this year. Why create another-esp for such a young team.
Your guess as to how Fewell will use Amukamara during his rookie season?
Could see more of a Charles Woodson role for him-esp in Nickel. Like last year-when they did it with 3 Safeties-I bet NYG uses a lot of unconventional personnel groupings on D, even on early downs. They are so strong and deep and DL and DB, but not at all at LB. So why throw a bumch of ordinary LBs out there? That is yet another way in which Prince could factor in.
Where will Deangelo Williams land once the smoke clears?
Boy, he seems like a Bronco to me. STL?
Rumor? Tiki has a deal with Det as soon as lockout ends
Good for him. I don't see why anyone would be excited about adding Tiki. Personnally, I bet he ends up in TBay with Twin Bro.
Woodson not in your top 12 defensive players? He is like a swiss army knife out there
He got consideration-as did many others who are not listed. Tough to make that list. But I also thought that Woodson look a noticable step backwards last year from 2009.
Is Jerod Mayo overrated?
Nah. Not a terrific take on player. And his huge tackle numbers might inflate him a bit I guess. But I really like his head for the game and his range. Plays hard. Plays the run and pass well. Every down LB.
Huff stay in Oakland? Whitner stay in Buffalo?
Whitner will leave. They have already made arrangements-and Wilson is a good backup. Bet they would love to keep Huff, but does he ever look like a Cowboy or what?
DE Cullen Jenkins and NT A.Franklin to the Skins. These are the moves the Skins should make instead of going after Nnamdi. Put these guys with Carriker on the DL and with Orakpo, Fletcher and Kerrigan at LB's and the front 7 could be dominant. Thoughts?
NT is the HUGE need there in the front seven. Franklin would be a GREAT addition. That would be the guy I target. Can live with the DEs.
Frontrunners for DROY and OROY?
I said that J Smith was my DROY-but after a little thought, I will say he will have the best rookie year of D players-but winning that award for a CB is just so tough to pull off. Dark horse: Mason Foster in TBay. LBs are always safe bets. Leaning toward Thomas in Miami right now for OROY, but much could change.
If the Niners lose Franklin, could you see them make a play for Jenkins and then slide Sopoaga back to NT? Jenkins and Smith as bookends in a 3-4 would be tremendous!
That would be. I do like McDonald though. Sopoaga does seem best suited for the nose too. But he can play high and get rooted out of there too easily. Losing Franklin would really hurt that up and coming D.
Any predictions on the CFL season?(Just in case this lockout last for a while)
Roughriders all the way. Wow, I really hope I never have to make such a comment again.
Re: Justin Smith - what other DE in the game could be as effective in 3-4 and 4-3 like he's done during his career?
Good point. Does it ALL. Better now than ever though.
I've read reports that DaQuan Bowers dropped because teams thought he could only play for 3 years..isn't that close to the average NFL career anyways? Is 3 years of production worth a 2nd rounder? I think so...
Exactly. But it isn't worth a first rounder when you consider the $$$ and all the other guys who are left on the board at that point. Just so hard to predict. Sounds like he will have to be managed all week though with practice before games-like Winslow actually.
Which media darling team do you think has a better chance of living up to the hype -- the Lions or the Texans?
Houston is in this position every year it seems. But-I am actually becoming a big believer in their D. So I say Houston.
As a scout what were your best (Josh Cribbs?) and worst evaluations?
I didn't think AJ Hawk was good enough to play at Pitt. He was going to Ohio State no matter what, but I didn't think he deserved a scholorship. Ended up being the 4th or 5th pick overall in the draft a few years later.
Believer in Houston's D? *As a 75 yard TD bomb goes over your head*
I bet they add one more guy though in that secondary-or at NT. I trust Phillips as a D coach. And there is much more talent on that side of the ball now than before.
Okay Folks, I am out. Good stuff. Follow me on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL. This lock out needs to end!
