Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. We'll talk playoffs for a few minutes and then spend the bulk of the hour discussing the NBA Draft. Let's roll ...
Think so. I think we've underrated all year Miami's ability to shut things down defensively. Derrick Rose is frustrated. I thought the Bulls depth would give them an advantage ... but it's looking more and more like LeBron, Wade and Bosh are going to take home that ring.
So it appears the Bulls are on their last leg in the playoffs against Miami. What do they need to do to get some help on the wing for Rose?
I do think that will be priority one this summer. They need a two guard. They've had interest in several players in the draft including Klay Thompson and Marshon Brooks ... but I don't think either player will be there when they draft. They'll probably have to figure out something via free agency. The team is young ... they'll be back.
Chad, are we suppose to be surprised by the nba playoffs this year? the mavs are a slight surprise, but really, aren't these two teams the two that have looked like NBA Champions the whole post season?
They way everyone has been hating on the Heat all year ... there's got to be some surprise. And who had faith in the Mavs given their playoff stumbles in the past? I think these two are mild surprises yes. Look, I picked a Bulls-Thunder finals ... so what do I know?
Can one superstar (Dirk) and a great supporting cast beat 3 superstars (Wade, James, Bosh) and a weak supporting cast?
Well, before the Chicago-Heat series I would've said yes. I thought that's what gave the Bulls the advantage. Mavs supporting cast is better ... and no one is having a better playoffs than Dirk right now ... so I guess, in theory, it should be a tighter match-up. But if I was a betting man, I'd go with the Heat to win it all.
Aloha, Chad. Thoughts on the Lakers hiring Mike Brown? Can he get the Lakers to play D?
I really like Mike Brown. If he can't get the Lakers to play defense, I don't know who can. Offensively, I think the Lakers will be relieved to move away from the triangle and get more pick and rolls in the offense. The key question for me will be Kobe. He has to have Kobe's trust and respect. At times it felt like he didn't have LeBron's and that hurt the team. At the end of the day, his relationship with Kobe, Gasol, Artest and Odom will matter more than what sort of offense he runs.
What do you make of Rockets probably hiring McHale as there next coach. Who would they like to draft?
I actually think McHale is an excellent coach. Terrible GM, but a very good coach. Players like playing for him. And I think that was a key in the Houston job. Rick Adelman is loved by players. You can't replace him with someone they hate to play for. I'm happy for Kevin if the Rockets decide he's their guy ... it's a good opportunity.
Any reason why we have not seen any athletic testing results published from the combine (vert. jump, shuttles, etc.)?I like comparing previous years athletic testing results of current pros to current draft prospects. You guys did this a couple times in the past, and I am wondering if you are planning to do it again this year?
Still waiting on it ... should arrive sometime today
Is Chris Singleton a top ten pick come draft night?
He's a lottery pick. Not everyone agrees, but enough teams in the lottery like him that I think he goes there. Bobcats, Bucks, Jazz and Rockets all fans.
Do you think the Jazz would be better off getting their point guard in Knight at No. 3 or The Jimmer Show at 12?
Just depends on what you value. They are very different players. But Knight is bigger, a much better defender, and more athletic. Jimmer is a better shooter, a more aggressive scorer and more NBA ready. Long-term ... Knight is the choice. And I think the Jazz are looking long term.
Would love to see Jimmer end up on the Knicks. That type of guard in the D'Antoni system could really help change it up from Chauncey during the games.
The Knicks like him ... a lot. I'm not sure he gets by Indiana at No. 15 however. If he's not there, I think the Knicks have focused in on Josh Selby ... though I hear Marshon Brooks and Nikola Vucevic and Klay Thompson are also options for them.
Why isn't Jeremy Tyler projected to go higher? If I were the Suns I would take him with the 13th pick because it's such a weak draft and he has the potential to be the best player in it.
Because he hasn't played high level basketball yet. The year in Israel was a total bust. He played around 15 mpg in Japan this year ... but would've been better off playing somewhere in the NCAA. He's a terrific athlete and has great length. But he's still a project. 13 may be a little high for that gamble.
Any news on what the T'Wolves will do with the #2 pick? What should they do?
Great question. Owner Glen Taylor said the other day that he thought the team would keep the pick. Virtually every GM I speak to thinks they're trading it. I know they've already been listening to offers from teams. It makes sense for them to trade IF they get a good offer. The team needs some 24 to 26 year olds who can steady the ship.
Anyone in particular the Pistons are high on?
They'd love to go big if they can. Jonas Valanciunas, Bismack Biyombo, Tristan Thompson are the most likely options.
Are the Wizards considering moving up to potentially draft Kanter or even Derrick Williams?
Not out of the question. They also have pick 18 that could help them move up. Williams would be a very good fit for them. I suppose Kanter would too. The other guy I hear they're high on is Jan Vesely.
If you were Bryan Colangelo, who would you pick at #5? Point guard of the future or low post presence?
They really need both so ... plus more help at the 3. You take the best player available and make the adjustments ... in free agency. At 5 ... it's probably a Euro ... I know that won't be popular with Raptors fans, but now that Colangelo has an extension, I don't think he's worrying as much.
Klay Thompson seems like a great fit for the Suns, moreso than Jimmer. Any chance he goes there at #13?
He could. I actually have the Jazz taking Alec Burks in Mock Draft. 3.0. Jimmer is going to the Pacers. But Thompson's shooting ability would make him an attractive fit too.
Thoughts on the rumor of Granger going to Minny for players and the #2? I would love it only if Indy drafted Kanter then they could move George to the 3 and pick up a SG in F.A.
I think it's bogus. It think that's Minnesota trying to set the bar for what they're looking for. If the Pacers did swing a deal like that, I think it would be Derrick Williams that they grabbed. He's No. 2 on virtually EVERY board.
Draft night... Who does Cleveland pick #1? I like Irving's potential but Kanter may be the Euro to escape the Darko Millicic syndrome...
Too risky. Irving is strongly in the lead. Derrick Williams is in the picture. I think Kanter will be there at 4 anyway.
Kanter>Williams in upside right?
I guess ... but only because we have no idea about how good Kanter will or won't be. So if you're projecting ... you're projecting on a blank slate. I like him, but I'd be the first to acknowledge that Kanter is a big gamble. You could win big. You could lose big.
Is Gordon Hayward a 2 or 3? Shouldn't the Jazz consider putting him at the 2 and drafting a 3 with AK47's contract ending?
They do see him as a 2 which is why I have them taking Chris Singleton at No. 12.
We've all heard this is a weak draft compared to most, but where are the strengths?
Middle of the first. Draft is a bit weak at the top, but by the middle of the draft there's a ton of talent I think in the middle of the draft between 11-25. Hard to see a huge difference in players. First half of second round is solid as well.
Josh Selby Steal or bust when drafted?
He's another big risk because he really flamed out at Kansas this year. But there were extenuating circumstances and the truth is that Selby is a big-time talent who may have the quickest first step in the draft. He's going to be able to get to the basket.
Why is Marshon Brooks not a lottery pick? He seems like the total package
He's a terrific talent. Two knocks ... One is his age ... 22 year olds don't fare nearly as well as 19 years olds long term. Two his team didn't win. He put up great numbers, but is he a winner. Lots of teams have questions about that. But on talent? Yeah he's a lottery pick.
why isn't Reggie Jackson higher on your mock? He looks to be steal with his size athletic and defensive ability.
He could be. An injury has forced him to miss both the pre-draft combine in Chicago and the Minnesota workouts. That's hurt him a bit.
Who stood out in the work-outs in Minnesota the past two days?
Malcolm Lee, Jon Leuer, Josh Selby, Chandler Parsons, Diante Garrett, Travis Leslie and Charles Jenkins all got mentions from NBA scouts ... All but Garrett are on the first round bubble right now.
Darius Morris more likely to become Andre Miller 2.0 or Shaun Livingston post-injuries?
Could be. Lots of different opinions on him by scouts. He's got amazing court vision. Lacks elite explosiveness and still needs work on that jumper. I'm usually a fan of big point guards and am a fan of Morris. If he slides into the second, I think he's a steal.
What do you see Boston doing at 25? I know most think a 4 or a 5, but I think they need athletic finishers at any position but the 1.
I've got Nikola Vucevic going there right now. He may have helped himself more than anyone at the Combine. Great measurements and played well. But he may go higher than 25 ... hear there's interest in the mid first round.
who would you draft between valaciunas, Vesely and kanter? Why?
Vesely because he's a NBA athlete, has played well at the highest level. Has good upside and not a lot of risk. Kanter and Valanciunas both have bigger upsides because of their position ... but both offer more risks as well.
Most mocks I've seen have the Bobcats taking a PF, but with Tyrus Thomas why wouldn't they focus more on a SF or Center?
NOt a lot of centers there ... though I think Biyombo will ultimately be a Ben Wallace big man who plays the middle. That's who we've had there the past few weeks.
what's going on with Kemba Walker? Ever since the NCAA I haven't heard much.. will he fall out the top 10?
I don't think so. Was a rumor floating around Chicago that the Jazz would select him at No. 3. I think the Jazz have decided anything ... but he's in the mix there, at Toronto at No. 5, at Kings at No. 7 and at Bobcats at No. 9. So I really doubt he slips out of the Top 10. He may not look the greatest in workouts, but people remember what he did this season.
Tobias Harris to the Thunder at 24!!! Young backup SF/PF with a good basketball IQ. What do you think?
Don't think he slides that far ... but would be a very good pickup for the Thunder. I think Denver at 22 is his backstop. Rockets looking hard at him at 14.
What do you think is the best case scenario for Cleveland with the 1 and 4 picks?
Cleveland is in a great position. I think they could get Irving and Kanter or Williams and Knight/Walker. Both of them would be terrific additions to their roster.
Where do the blazers go this year? Do they trade up, or who do they draft? Any quality centers or pgs?
At 21, you just grab whoever is left on the board. Probably point guard or big. I have them taking Morehead State's Kenneth Faried at 21. Would be a steal if they can get him there. Love that motor!
Kemba Walker or Brandon Knight? Who you taking
Short term Walker. Long term Knight. So ... Knight. Gotta think long-term in the NBA Draft.
If the Wolves CANT trade out of the 2nd pick who do you think they take? I know Williams is No. 2 but he doesn't really fit with the roster. While a 17 win team should go best player available more often than not, should Minnesota really keep adding 3/4 tweeners?
They'll take Williams and explore trades with players on the roster
Where do you see Nolan Smith & Kyle Singler going in the draft?
Both could sneak into the first. There's interest in both. Smith is ranked ahead of Singler on most boards ... Bulls seems to have some interest in Smith
Do you see any potential trades for the Celtics?
Yes, I think Danny Ainge will shake things up this summer. I think Rondo and Paul Pierce are safe. Not sure about anyone else on the roster.
Any rumblings about if Monta is being shopped? Jerry West seemed to hint at needing some size.
If he's available, there will be a long line of teams waiting to pick him up ...
Gotta run everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today ... we'll do it again next week. Aloha!
