Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (2:01 PM)

We have a great Finals coming. I only have about 40 minutes today, so let's get to it. No movie quotes. No messing around. No long answers.

FRANCISCO (MEXICO)

Mr. Thorpe my best wishes for you and your family, if an average fan was granted permission into the facilicies of a team (practice, locker room, cafeteria, etc) what would be the most surprising thing for him/her ?

David Thorpe
  (2:02 PM)

How ordinary the players are. They are just people, like you and me.

Matthew Wu (Halifax, NS)

Does last night count as the Bulls going down swinging or meekly surrendering to a team with much more talent?

David Thorpe
  (2:02 PM)

They got beat by a superior team overall, but got a little unlucky last night.

Eli Gordon (Miami, Florida)

David! How are you??How would you compare last nights comeback performance by the Miami Heat with Dallas's big comeback in game4? as well as with all NBA comebacks in playoff history?Last night was truly greatness personified.

David Thorpe
  (2:03 PM)

Hey Eli. The Dallas one was more spectacular, though doing it on the road was cool. Miami's guys truly believed.

J. Ricardo (St. Charles, MO)

Sorry, just let us get this off our chests. Bucher didn't show up for his chat after claiming for the past two months that Rose is BETTER than LeBron James. Even after game 4, he claimed that Rose is better. Please, David, have a chat with your pal Ric. He's honestly damaging what credibility he had. Thank you.

David Thorpe
  (2:04 PM)

I'm sure that wasn't the case at all. He has a job, wife, and kids, and sometimes chats have t take a backseat. That being said, I'm a friend of his, but anyone who thinks anything other than LBJ being the WBP is just not seeing things clearly.

David (Dallas)

Big Dirk supporter and I mean big for years... He has never had the help and couln't help it. Guy looks on a mission... Does he have a monster series?

David Thorpe
  (2:06 PM)

Let me backtrack a bit. The blessings in this postseason are that we are all reminded that the game is so much more complex than the narrative. Dallas broke their mold. So did Miami. As did Dirk, Kidd, Terry, Bosh, and Bron. Dirk will have a good series, not a great one, I'd guess.

Dave (Miami)

Thorpe, you walk in the clouds. I remember hearing you speak about how hard it will be for a team to beat Miami 4 games in a series because of how special Wade and Bron will be late in games. And you said this back in November. You the man!!!!

Sam (OKC)

David, you picked us to beat Dallas. How are you an expert again?

David Thorpe
  (2:08 PM)

As evidenced by the previous post, sometimes I'm right. Sometimes I'm not. I guess I should have realized that OKC would not be able to hold onto big leads late in games.

Alex (Littleton, CO)

Coach Thorpe, can you please inform Chris Broussard that you had LeBron going to Miami LONG before he did? He basically anointed himself as the pioneer of that idea on Mike & Mike the other day.

David Thorpe
  (2:09 PM)

I have no idea when he predicted it. I never predicted it in the sense that I knew inside info, I just thought it made the most sense.

John (Ohio)

IS Lebron the most physically gifted player to ever play the game?

David Thorpe
  (2:10 PM)

Given all aspects of his physical and skill dimensions, he probably is.

JJ (Jacksonville)

Why would the best player in the world want to go play with another 2 stars, 1 being top 5? Shouldn't they want to beat each other and not team up against the rest of the league. The league is now ruined because they will be there every year. It is just an 82 game exibition for most teams now.

David Thorpe
  (2:10 PM)

I think "ruined" is too strong a word. I would have said "riveting".

Dan (Miami Beach)

The Brown hire feels bad. Artest has more rings than he does. Too nice a guy. What do you see in him as a coach?

David Thorpe
  (2:11 PM)

I think he's an excellent choice, great defensive coach who runs a great program.

JC (LA, CA)

WOW. Thank you for acknowledging there is a narrative/agenda being pushed all the time in sports journalism. The B.S. is sometimes too much to put with when some of us are just trying to find info like what defense teams are playing against each other.

David Thorpe
  (2:12 PM)

I don't think the narrative is limited to sports at all.

Bobby (Dallas)

You say that you guess Dirk has a good series and not a great one. You also picked Miami to win the series (In 6 I believe)So if Dirk DOES have a great series (Average 30+ per game let's say) do the Mavericks win?

David Thorpe
  (2:13 PM)

Dallas has killed it on offense, that's why they are in the Finals. If that continues, yes, I think they will win the title.

Adam (Dallas)

Please tell me you're not on the LeBron > MJ bandwagon?

David Thorpe
  (2:14 PM)

I've been on the "LeBron has a chance to end up being better than Jordan" train for 5 years now. That train is hundreds of miles away from the station. But it picked up a little speed last night.

Amarillo Texas [via mobile]

Why are the NBA refs so bad? They are ruining the playoffs.

David Thorpe
  (2:15 PM)

Yea, I'm sure ratings and readership is way down because of a few blown charging and traveling calls.

Chris (Athens, GA)

Your opinion: Dirk or LeBron as playoffs MVP (maybe someone else?)so far and why? My brother and I have been arguing about this for a week! I say LeBron because he impacts so many facets of the game. My brother points to Dirk's amazing offensive numbers. Thanks.

David Thorpe
  (2:16 PM)

Chris, I've been writing a weekly article on this subject. Go to the NBA/espn home page and look for it.

Carson (Laie, HI)

What do you think about what Scottie Pippin said that Lebron may be the better player out of him and Jordan?

David Thorpe
  (2:16 PM)

I think he's upset with MJ about not hiring him.

Doug (Cincy)

Do you ever get tired of people criticizing what you say, just because you disagree with them. It is your opinion, doesn't mean they have to take it as fact.

David Thorpe
  (2:17 PM)

Not at all.

Mikey (Chicago)

Why was Noah on the bench last night, I'd liked to have seen him out there instead of Taj.

David Thorpe
  (2:17 PM)

I was thinking the same thing.

Mike Brown (LA)

A lot of people said that I got fired in Cleveland was because Lebron and me was not on the same page and LeBron was the one that got me out of Cleveland. Right now I will be the coach for Kobe, do you think Kobe and I will get on the same because Kobe endorse Brain shaw to be the next coach.

David Thorpe
  (2:18 PM)

I don't think Lebron wanted you out at all. He was going to Miami regardless of what happened to you. I think he'll tell Kobe good things about you.

Mikey (Chicago)

David I'm all doom and gloom here after my Bulls lost. Cheer me up.

David Thorpe
  (2:19 PM)

You have 6-8 great years ahead of you, Bulls fan. And if you are reading this, you have a computer and a heartbeat, considerably luckier than a lot of people out there today.

Saif (Dekalb, Il)

Hey Thorpe, you have worked with Deng, Noah, and K-Mart and helped make strong impacts to their game. How come none of the A listers who could use a bit of help like Rose, Rondo, Westbrook realize this and come down to work with you?

David Thorpe
  (2:20 PM)

I think there are a lot of guys to chose from who do what I do.

Benjamin (concord)

More physically talented? Westbrook or Rose?

David Thorpe
  (2:20 PM)

Physically, RW. Skilled? DR.

Tom (NY)

I think LBJ lost his chance to be GOAT when he went to Miami. One of the best? Sure. Five rings? Sure. But he just isn't THE MAN down there like Jordan and doesn't dominate the game. Still top 10, but not #1

David Thorpe
  (2:21 PM)

I'll think about this if he ever gets to 5 rings.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be in the NBA Finals?

David Thorpe
  (2:22 PM)

I'm leaning to Miami and Dallas.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

Love the chats Thorpe. You should be a GM. Please put on your GM hat and tell me what direction do you see the Raptors and Wizards going with their first round picks?

David Thorpe
  (2:22 PM)

I think both teams need to draft skill/toughness guys. There are a few to chose from.

Jeff (Modesto, CA)

Let's break away from the playoffs for a minute.....If the Kings draft Kemba, they could be really good. They need someone tough who can handle the ball, score, and also get others involved. His maturity would be sorely needed and welcomed.

David Thorpe
  (2:23 PM)

I predict disaster if they go with Walker. He and Evans are not a good pairing.

Jason (Toronto)

Name one player who has pleasantly surprised you this playoffs and one that has disappointed you in their play

David Thorpe
  (2:24 PM)

Jason Terry has been terrific. Kendrick Perkins was awful. Perhaps he is still injured some.

Julius (Atlanta)

Will Dallas play enough defense to win the title? I take it you think not since you picked Miami, so my question is what specifically do they need to do? Please no generic answers like guard Wade and LeBron, more specific please

David Thorpe
  (2:25 PM)

For Dallas to win, they have to maintain their incredible offensive efficiency.

Mike (St. Paul, MN)

If you had Johnny Flynn in your gym to coach, what aspects of his game would you work on? Decision making?

David Thorpe
  (2:26 PM)

Bingo!!

Ted (Australia)

Any tips on how to get out of a shooting slump?

Man Hands (NYC)

David--In athletic testing, Jimmer had better cumulative results than Brandon Knight. How much stock do you put into this?

David Thorpe
  (2:28 PM)

Very little. He's likely 3 or 4 years older.

Elias (IL)

Was there a strategical thing that Chicago could have done better down the stretch, or was the talent discrepancy just too much to bear?

David Thorpe
  (2:29 PM)

I thought when LBJ was on Rose, they should have put Deg into some stagger actions.

Biju (New Hyde Park, NY)

What do you think of the Kevin McHale hiring in Houston?

David Thorpe
  (2:30 PM)

I think he'll do well there. I would have preferred Mike Brown, but we know why he did not interview there now.

Matt (Memphis)

Better defender: Tony Allen or Shane Battier?

David Thorpe
  (2:31 PM)

Allen by a longshot.

Bill (DC)

Am I crazy for thinking Udrih is the solution at PG for the Kings? He's much better than he gets credit for. The better solution for them would be to get someone to reign in Evans and Cousins. They need veteran leadership before more talent.

David Thorpe
  (2:31 PM)

Yes, you are crazy.

Gray (Chicago)

Thorpe, Mike Bibby threw a towel right as DRose took that last free throw. Sure DRose should not have been affected, but isn't that a Bush League move from a veteran like Bibby? Class act...please expose him for this, no one else is. Google "Bibby throws towel" to see it.

David Thorpe
  (2:32 PM)

Bah.

Toby (Houston)

I know you love Haslem, but Dirk is going to be way tougher for him to guard this time. Stronger, better arsenal, mentally tougher.

David Thorpe
  (2:32 PM)

Agreed.

John (DC)

Coach - how would you work on decision making? What can you do beyond watching tape? Any drills you recommend?

David Thorpe
  (2:32 PM)

It's called teaching.

Jason (Seattle)

How aggressive should the Bulls be in looking to obtain another offensive weapon to pair with Rose?

David Thorpe
  (2:34 PM)

Very.

Steven (Kingsport)

Coach - I am almost convinced, Spoelstra should try Lebron on Dirk. One because I'd love to see it and I am just getting caught up in the amazement of his effort against Rose?

David Thorpe
  (2:34 PM)

I have no doubt we'll see that matchup a good amount. LeBron will insist.

Gray (Chicago)

"Bah"...so I guess that is acceptable?

David Thorpe
  (2:35 PM)

I can honestly say that I never once thought about what the players on the opponents bench were doing when we were shooting ft's.

Josh (Knoxville, TN)

Will Noah ever learn how to shoot? I mean, some players like Shawn Marion have terrible looking shots, but they go in. His shot, not so much.

David Thorpe
  (2:36 PM)

Marion has not made many either in the past few years. Yes, Noah has work to do but it can improve.

mk (albuquerque)

does lebron have the length to guard dirk effectively?

David Thorpe
  (2:36 PM)

He has the quickness, which is more vital.

Joe (Atl)

Watch any soccer? If so who do you have in the champions league final tomorrow ?

David Thorpe
  (2:37 PM)

Not since the Rowdies circa 1975. "The Rowdies are.....a kick in the grass".

Benjamin (concord)

Should Durant have insisted to guard Dirk?

David Thorpe
  (2:38 PM)

Yes, because then they could have put Collison on Chandler late in games and that woulds have kept him off the o glass.

Roscoe (Chicago)

Championship coaches such as Popovich, Phil Jackson, Doc Rivers, Pat Reily, were all great tacticans who made critical adjustments during games. Do you Think it's possible for Chicago to win a title (much less multiple titles) without a tactician at the Head coaching position>

David Thorpe
  (2:39 PM)

Thibs will go down as a great coach. Give him time.

John (Huntington)

Do you think Mayo and Rose could play good together? Both young players and both willing to do whatever it takes for the team to win. Mayo could be a great #2 scorer.

David Thorpe
  (2:39 PM)

Agreed. If Mayo finds his shot.

Charles (San Jose)

Regarding Bucher's chat, millions of men have a "job, wife, and kids" yet manage to show up for work.

David Thorpe
  (2:40 PM)

I was only suggesting that he easily could have had a family issue to deal with. Like I do now. It's 2:40, and I have to run. Thanks everyone. Please, please, be safe this long weekend. Make good decisions.
